The first part defines the historical features of multi-ethnicity in Prague and Trieste under the Habsburgs and shows how crucial the ethnic discourse was for the making of the modern metropolis in Western as well as in East-Central Europe. Through the analysis of two novels, Marie Majerovás Přehrada (The dam) and Bogomir Magajna's Graničarji (The border-guards), the author considers the question whether the multiethnic issue can be regarded as an element of modernist imagery of Prague and TriesteAvtor članka razpravlja o zvezi med modernismom in večetničnostjo.
