Ključne besede: kulturna dediščina, pisna kulturna dediščina, knjižnice, Slovenija Abstract Purpose: The article aims to present shortcomings in the treatment of documentary heritage in libraries. Documentary heritage is of utmost importance for the Slovenian national identity and culture, however, neither the library profession nor the Ministry of Culture engage properly in its protection. Methodology/approach: Study presents an overview of contemporary practices con- cerning identification, cataloguing and preservation of documentary heritage in Slo- venian libraries. Results: The inadequate legal solutions, fragmentary attempts to record cultural herit- age, improvised cataloguing of library collections, inconsistent digitization of library collections, and insufficient protection of documentary monuments result from the lack of conceptual solutions and strategies. The construction of a new national library building is uncertain, while there are not enough funds for an appropriate storage of archival copies of publications (i. e. cultural monuments). A national strategy of the protection of documentary heritage in libraries should be one of the priorities of the library profession. Research limitations: The survey presents an overview of the situation in 2017 and high- lights only typical examples. Originality/practical implications: The research represents the first comprehensive re- view on the issues of documentary heritage in Slovenian libraries and will allow a systematic approach to the issues related to its protection. Keywords: cultural heritage, documentary heritage, libraries, Slovenia 1 Kulturna dediščina v novih strateških dokumentih V prvi polovici leta 2017 so evropske institucije sprejele dokumenta, ki bosta v pri- hodnjih letih usmerjala politiko kulturne dediščine. Evropski strategiji kulturne dediščine za 21. stoletje, ki jo je sprejel Svet Evrope februarja 2017 (Evropska …, 2017), je maja istega leta sledil še sklep Evropskega parlamenta in sveta o razgla- sitvi leta 2018 za leto evropske kulturne dediščine (Sklep …, 2017). Oba dokumenta poudarjata pomen dediščine za oblikovanje naše lastne identi- tete, ozaveščata nas o kulturni dediščini, ki nas obkroža tukaj in zdaj, o njenem pomenu za prostorski in gospodarski razvoj ter opozarjata na vključevanje vsebin
