Response: My soul thirsts for you, O Lord my God. First Reading Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1 The people of God will mourn for the one they have pierced. Second Reading Galatians 3:26-29 Clothed in Christ through baptism, we no longer have differences between us. Gospel Luke 9:18-24 To follow Christ is to take up the cross every day. "Who do you say I am?" Illustration Television in its infancy was not very interested in real life. It offered news and sports coverage, a few gardening and DIY programmes, but otherwise took its lead from the world of cinema. What people wanted was fantasy entertainment, films and drama, the world of make-believe. The last decade has seen a reversal of this pattern. We are treated to great chunks of what are billed as "reallife" programmes. There are programmes in which supposedly ordinary people live together under the eye of the camera. There is also an obsession with the sale and decoration of houses, makeover programmes involving ordinary people and a keenness to delve into the past of families and friends in an attempt to discover who people may really be. Sometimes the people featured are well known to start with. Sometimes people become celebrities by being exposed in this way through the media. They are famous for being famous, for 196 | VESTNIK 2013 having been exposed to the public eye, and not for any achievement or talent they may have. It is easy for the media to build people up in this way; it is just as easy for them to knock people down. Indeed it sometimes seems as if this is inevitable. And although it's important that the media are able to call politicians, business leaders and those in authority to account for their actions, considerable damage can be done when they intrude into people's personal lives and often come to false conclusions about them. Gospel Teaching In all three Synoptic Gospels Jesus asks his disciples this question about himself: "Who do you say that I am?" In Luke's version, as with all the important moments in his Gospel, the exchange takes place against the background of prayer. Jesus is praying alone in the presence of his disciples. We are about halfway through Luke's Gospel. In the first half Jesus, through his words and actions, has been showing his disciples who he is, namely the one anointed by the spirit to fulfil the words of the prophet Isaiah, "to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord's year of favour". Through his preaching, teaching and miracles, through the life he has shared with them, Jesus has offered his disciples many signs of this fulfilment. All of this Peter acknowledges when he declares Jesus to be "The Christ of God". The disciples have learnt lesson one. They know who Jesus is. Now they have to move to lesson two, to discover what this means. Jesus does not waste time. They will immediately set out on what in Luke is one long, winding road to Jerusalem. The end of this journey is suffering, death - and resurrection on the third day. The journey to this end will allow the disciples to learn more about what we may call "the cost of their discipleship", that to continue following Christ will mean the same demands will be made of them. Application How would Jesus have dealt with the modern media? Probably in the same way he dealt with the scribes and the Pharisees, giving them the signs of his true identity and encouraging them to interpret these signs correctly. One suspects that his success today would be just as limited. Some parts of the media, like some of those people who listened to Jesus, seek openly for the truth. Others more often than not have their own story in advance. They then fit the "facts" into the story in a way that will arouse the greatest interest and so sell the greatest number of copies. Nobody emerges well from such stories, at least not for long, as misery and misfortune evoke greater interest than goodness and happy outcomes. It can make the cost of discipleship, as the disciples themselves found, doubly difficult. Good deeds will be twisted into signifying malice or greed, and truth will become hard to portray and even more demanding to find. In its pursuit we may have to lose our good name, friends and fortune, but the life ultimately attained will be of real rather than false value, of integrity rather than imitation. This is just one illustration of the pitfalls that face us as we try to pursue a life based on the values revealed to us in Jesus and his teaching. As Luke himself will constantly remind us, what we achieve is through the Holy Spirit working in and through us, not through our efforts alone. HLAJENJE ZA SPODNJO DVORANO Letos je odpovedala skoraj 40 let stara enota za hlajenje spodnje dovrane.
