MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING
Home Office, Chicago, Illinois, Aug. 26-27, 1963
The semi-annual meeting of the Board of Directors of S. W. U. was opened on Monday morning, Aug. 26, 1963 at the Home Office in Chicago, 111., at 9:20 a. m. The following officers were in attendance: president, Antonia Turek; founder, Marie Prisland; secretary, Albina Novak; treasurer, Josephine Železnikar and auditors, Anne Podgoršek, Victoria Faletič, Frances Gaspich and editor, Cor-inne Leskovar.
The first order of business was the examination of financial books. The audits completed, all the Directors visited the Metropolitan State Bank to examine and verify the contents of the safety deposit box there. All documents were found in order as specified in the secretary’s financial statement. The auditors expressed their satisfaction that all financial accounts and documents were found to be true and in order. The Directors continued the meeting at the Home office with the reading of reports which were accepted as read.
REPORT OF THE SUPREME PRESIDENT Greetings, Officers, and welcome to our semi-annual meeting of 1963. I am very happy to see that our Founder, Marie Prisland and Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak, have returned safe and well from their trips abroad.
Our Coupon Campaign for new members has turned out a success. I am pleased to see in the reports that we have enrolled 339 new members with the help of 114 members and 47 branches taking part. The winner of this campaign is none other than VICKIE FALETIČ of Br. 25, Cleveland, Ohio, who secured 42 new members. Runner-up was ANN GYURCIK of Br. 101, Bedford, Ohio, with 18 new members. Third in the race was Rose Kraemer of Br. 43, Milwaukee. Wis., with 14 members; and fourth,
Theresa Komat of Br. 50, Cleveland, Ohio, with 12 members.
Branch 25, Cleveland, Ohio, is in first place with 42 members! Br. 50, Cleveland, follows closely with 39 members. I cannot help but be happy about this, because my branch no. 50, always goes out 100% to support me and here again, they have done their best! I wish to thank each and everyone who worked in the campaign and made it another successful one.
Reports on State Conventions that were held in the last half year period were well-accepted. The groups met at Milwaukee, Wise.; Cleveland, Ohio; Fontana, Calif.; and Canon City, Colo. The Officers report that all were very well-attended and great enthusiasm was shown toward the organization and its work. State Conventions are important and should be held every year. They promote education, spirit, good will, and enable members of outlying branches to meet and know one another better, thereby solidifying each state. I was unable to attend the Ohio Convention this spring due to death in my family, so I wish to thank Secretary Albina Novak, for filling in for me. To all the State Presidents — a great big thank you for your excellent work.
Our sports activities have also been doing well in the past year and have helped to increase our membership. The bowling tournaments of eastern and midwestern areas were both successful. In Cleveland, bowlers gathered on March 24th with 22 local teams participating in the one day tournament. The annual midwestern classic was held a week later, March 30-31st at La Salle, Illinois, with bowlers from the States of Illinois and Wisconsin, totaling 28 teams.	(Continued	on	Page	202)

IN THE WRONG SEAT
In the rich field of technology the present century will undoubtedly be recorded as the most advanced period of history. It is regrettable however, that while science has soared to fantastic heights, the study of religion, intended to sound, as far as the human mind is capable, the depths of the hidden mysteries of the Creator and the creation, has been sadly neglected. Instead of attempting to correlate the ever growing discoveries of the forces of nature with the omnipotence of God, some have arrogantly striven to identify the Eternal First Cause with nature itself.
In line with this observation the great scientist Stein-metz wrote: “I think the greatest discovery will be along the spiritual lines. Here is a force which history clearly teaches has been the greatest power in the development of man, yet we have been merely playing with it. We have not seriously studied it as we have the physical forces. Some day the scientists will turn their laboratories over to the study of God, and prayer, and the spir-
itual forces, a subject which has hardly been scratched. When this day comes the world will see more advancement in one generation than it has in the past four generations. ”
There is a story told of a young college student in France, who was on his way home for a vacation. On the train, he was seated opposite an elderly man fingering a well-worn rosary. The youth spoke to him and said that it was silly to believe in God and prayer. He scoffed and claimed that as a science student he could prove that all things come from nature, that there was no God. He asked the man for his name and address and promised to send him literature that would enlighten his poor uninformed mind.
The old man silently put his hand into a coat pocket, took out his card and handed it to the student. The youth took the card and with some dismay, read the name: Louise Pasteur — Doctor of Science.
ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. Our card party held in September was very successful. 87 tables played. Each table was awarded a lovely hand made apron. 45 door prizes were distributed and refreshments were served.
The Committee wishes to express their appreciation to all who made this card party such a huge success: First, the public, the ticket sellers, workers in the hall and in the kitchen, those who sewed aprons, donated door prizes, coffee and cakes, and our treasurer, Mary Vertacic, for making the attractive tallies. A hearty thanks also to our Spiritual adviser, Father Wilimek, for mentioning our card party in the church bulletin. Chairman Sheclt and Co-Chairman Mary Turk are elated with the results of the party.
Sincere congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Pan-ko, parents of our vice-president, Ruth Sheck, who recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Deep sympathy is expressed to Mr. John Vertacic and family, who lost their dear wife and mother. Mrs. Anna Vertacic was a faithful member for many years. Our deep sympathy also to our member, Mrs. Frances Zni-darsich, who lost her beloved husband.
In my last report the name of Mrs. Mary Brezovnik was inadvertently o-mitted. She was with the group, who went to Slovenia this summer and we also welcome her back home.
I	am happy to report that most of our members have paid their dues for the year, but there are still some in arrears. Please come to the next meeting and take care of your asses-ment.

No 14, Euclid, Ohio. Condolences and deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs Theresa Skur and her family in the loss of her husband, Dr. Anthony Skur, who passed away Sunday, Aug. 25th. Mrs. Skur is a charter member of Branch No. 14. Dr. Skur was a native of old Slovenia, and came to this country at the age of -5. He graduated from Cornell and Western Universities, and was active in many Slovenian Lodges. Dr. Skur was the father of nine children, and grandfather of 20.
A large group of our members, together with their husbands, enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner at Lapp’s farm in Geneva, Ohio. From the reports I have received of this affair, the home-cooking was out of this world, aided by a number of side-dishes too numerous to describe.
Mr. Vidovich, husband of Mrs. Jennie Vidovich, underwent heart surgery at Huron Rd. Hospital, and is recuperating at his home.
Mrs. Mary Koljat donated to our good time treasury this month.
Members! November 17th is rapidly approaching. Remember this day, put a big circle around it on your calendar. It is the day of our ba-
zaar. We want to see most of you there, or all if possible. Bring all the friends that you can. The success of this affair depends on your co-operation and help. Hope to have more news for you next month.

No. 16, So. Chicago, III. Our meetings resumed again after a brief vacation. We had a fair attendance and plans went under way for our “Annual Christmas Party.”
As usual the party will be held at St. George’s Hall, 9Gth and Ewing, the first Sunday in December, which happens to be December 1st. It will start promptly at 2:30 p. m. and is for children members under the age of fourteen, also for their mothers and other adult members. Members desiring to participate in the “Grab Bag” may do so by bringing a gift valued at least $1.00. Also refreshment donations will be greatly appreciated.
On the sick list, we have Mrs. Katherine Zlogar and Mrs. Angeline U-dovich. Mrs. Zlogar was a regular attendant at the meetings and is really missed by all. Mrs. Udovich has been ailing for many months and we do hope she will soon turn for the better.
November Birthday celebrants are as follows: Katie Triller, Rose Sala-kar, Pauline Druga, Anna Klobuchar, Elizabeth Salihar, Mrs. Prisol and Emma Krai.

Supreme President’s Message
The Bazaar and Fair to be held by combined Cleveland branches is this month, Oct. 13, 1963, at St. Vitus Auditorium, E. 62nd & Glass Ave. It shall be the largest ever held. Baking demonstrations will be continuously given by our grandmothers, mothers and even juniors. The style show with our own members modeling will be grand as we are all interestd in the sewing talents of our members. Delicious home made baked goods will be sold and dinners served under the supervision of Mrs. Otoničar of Br. 25. On Saturday, October 12th, a bake sale of krofe will be held at the hall.
Bring your friends and spend Sunday, Oct. 13th with us at the S. W. U. Bazaar and Fair. Special guest for this affair will be our Founder, Marie Prisland of Sheboygan, Wis. You will visit with all our officers and friends in the hall and witness some wonderful exhibitions — all for the nominal admission of 50 cents — this entitles you also to four door prizes and free recipes of the foods demonstrated at the fair.
August 21st, twelve ladies from Br. 25, 32, 41 and 50 gathered at Globokar’s Lounge with our spiritual advisor, Fr. Claude Okorn of Milwaukee, as our guest. We all enjoyed the delicious dinner prepared by Frances Globokar and her cooks and most of all, the short visit with Fr. Claude.
The Illinois—Indiana State Convention held in Chicago was represented by all the Supreme Board members, Illinois state officers and Wisconsin state president. Delegates came from LaSalle, Oglesby, Pullman, So. Chicago, and Chicago branches and visitors also were present from Milwaukee. Presiding officer was state president, Mildred James and a great deal was accomplished for the good of the organization at that meeting. State Convention for 19G4 will be held at Oglesby, 111. It was nice seeing former supreme president, Josephine Livek along with the group from Oglesby. Hostess for the day were the members of Br. 2 and the audience enjoyed the nice program put on by Chicago members directed by editor Corinne Leskovar.
This month, we begin the Pre-Convention Campaign! Beginning Oct. 1st, until March 31st, 1964, you will have the opportunity of gaining cash prizes for every new member you enroll! The one securing the most new members will be our “Convention Queen” to reign at the 13th National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on May 17-20, 1964 and the runner-up will be the Princess of the convention. The crowning of the queen will be right there at the convention.
In the last issue of Zarja, we read the final report on our Coupon Campaign with 114 workers securing a total of 339 new members. This shows that we had very good workers! In the new campaign, if each member would enroll JUST ONE NEW MEMBER, we could double up and exceed the last campaign. Who will be the Convention Queen and Princess?
At the recent semi-annual Board of Directors meeting, the final dates for the 13th National Convention were set. The sessions will be on May 18, 19 and 20, 1964 with the actual opening ceremonies on Sunday, May 17th. The convention will be held at the Morrison Hotel in downtown Chicago.	All pre-
parations are now being made to make this convention a really successful one. Chicago is the ideal place for us because it is in the heart of the midwest and available to all points, east, west, north and south. The delegates and visitors will be right in the middle of all the downtown activity, because the Morrison Hotel is located at Madison and Clark Streets, near the main shopping and sight-seeing centers; near also, to St. Peter’s church in Chicago’s loop. Now is the time to start planning for this convention.

Our condolences also to the family of Mrs. Louis Muren, who died at the age of 87 years. She is survived by four sons and two daughters, Mrs. Frances Muren (nee Horvath), is our member for many years. May she rest in peace.
Our heartiest congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jagodnik, who celebrated their golden anniversary. Mrs. Jagodnik is well-known here, as she is also a member of our Zveza glee club, She is active in various societies. Mr. and Mrs. Jagodnik are well-known for their hospitality and friendliness. They have one son, and four daughters, all married, and a number of grandchildren.
Our congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Mando DiBartolomeo upon the arrival of their son. Mrs. Bartolomeo’s maiden name is Papesh.
Mrs. Mary Bostjancich from Summit St., has returned from a stay at the hospital; Mrs. Antonia Struna is still a patient at the hospital. We wish all sick members at the hospital or at home, a speedy recovery.
Since the fall weather is here, we hope to see many of our members at. our meetings, and please check your dues book if you are in arrears. It will help our secretary if you kept your dues paid up.

No. 23, Ely, Minn. As I mentioned in a recent report, Nationality Days celebration held here in July, was a grand affair. We celebrated Slovenian Night on July 17th. The program started off wtih very happy music and about 70 youngsters sang in Slovenian with Miss Mary Hutar directing. It was very surprising to us to see what can be done with these youngsters. They sang beautifully. A trio, composed of Mr. Matt Kobe, Mr. Frank Jenko and Mr. Valentine Ros-man sang some lively comical old time songs — really nice. The audience applauded long and loud. So, they sang some more. Then, the St. Anthony Catholic Church High Mass sang several selections under the direction of Miss Hutar.
Mr John Somrock (Judge) gave a short resume about the Slovenians who migrated to this country and those that located here. The program came to a close with community singing with Mrs. Chas. Merhar at the piano. Then, they went to the Junior College Cafeteria where coffee and potica was served. Mrs. Frank Prešeren was general chairman and the Dawn Club served — some job as there were 1,200 persons there! A beautiful display of old and authentic articles form Slovenia was set up for the guests to view.
Now the vacationing families are
home and children back to school. We started the meetings on Sept. 18th at the Community center. Pres. Barbara Brennan presided. Minutes were approved as read and secretary’s report given. The lunch committee was: Mrs. Molly Zupan assisted by Mmes. Frances Colorich, Christine Grahek, Rose Pucel and Miss Mary Shikonya.
Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Christine Grahek and family on the loss of her dear father, Mike Bachar, who passed away on Aug. 24th. Same heartfelt wishes to other members of the Bachar family.
We wish all members well and to those who are ill, speedy recovery.

CHICAGO HOSTS ILLINOIS STATE DAY
Officers and members met in Chicago, III., on Sunday, Aug. 25, 1963, for the annual State Convention of the States of Illinois and Indiana. Representatives of these branches deliberated at the St. Stephen’s Gym Hall, adjacent to St. Stephen’s church, where the day’s proceedings began with Mass. Hostess branch, no 2 took charge of the arrangements, including dinner and program. . The Supreme Board members are seen here with delegates of the Illinois branches, as they also attended in full number. Plans for the 1964 National Convention were also outlined at the State meeting.
A MESSAGE
Most cordial thanks be tendered to Josephine Železnikar, President; Albina Novak, Secretary; Elizabeth Zefran, Treasurer, and all other officers and members of Branch 2, Chicago, 111.,, tor the kindly welcome and generous hospitality given to the members and delegates of the recent Illinois—Indiana State Convention held at their fine city, Aug. 25, 1963.
As your presiding officer, I would like to render a somewhat free-style account of the day. It began with 11:30 Holy Mass at St. Stepen’s Church, followed by a wonderful dinner prepared by Br. 2 members at St. Stephen’s Gym Hall. The dinner was served with ultimate perfection. Most impressive was a short program presented by Corinne Leskovar, rec. secretary of Br. 2 and our Editor of Zarja, which captivated the audience and they in turn indicated in an impressive manner their appreciation of the eloquent and entertaining program.
To say the least, it was indeed a cherished privilege to be surrounded by our Supreme Officers, Marie Prisland, Founder of S. W. U. and Honorary President; Antonia Turek, Supreme President, Albina Novak, Supreme Secretary; Josephine Železnikar, Supreme Treasurer, and Supreme Auditors, Ann Podgoršek, Vicki Faletič and Prances Gaspich, who by the way, did an excellent job of covering
the convention as the recording secretary. Greetings were given by the Supreme Officers and out-of-town guests followed by reports of the following branches, represented by their delegates: Br. nos.: 2, 22, 24, 30, 72, 89, 95, and 99. It would be impassible to adequately express gratitude of every member of the delegation for the kindness which was showered upon all. The delegates now can only ask their respective branches to accept their reports and to consider the sentiments now recorded as expressed by our speakers. Every word was given in deepest sincerity and in the hope that the wishes expressed and Ideas given would be regarded as strengthening, renewing and enlightening The many friendships which were made at the convention will be life-long, I believe. I want to thank the members, delegates and out-of-town guests for all the acts of kindness, consideration and helpfulness. I hope I may continue to receive the benefit of all your experience and wisdom and that we shall all work together in strengthening our branches and continue to go forward to greater achievements for the common good. PROCEEDINGS OF ILL.-IND. STATE CONVENTION
Branch no. 2 of Chicago, was host for the Illinois-Indiana State convention in Chicago on Sunday, August 25, 1963.
The day started with 11:30 A. M. High Mass offered by Rev. Christopher Sedlak, O.F.M., at St. Stephen’s church with beautiful singing by the choir under the direction of Fr. Vendelin Spendov, O.F.M. After church services, we went to St. Stephen’s Auditorium, where a delicious dinner, prepared by Mrs. Anna Stare and her fine committee, was served. This was followed by a short stage program directed by Corinne Leskovar, which delighted all of us.
At 2:45 p. m. , the meeting was opened with prayer by State President Mildred James of br. no. 95. Minutes of the convention held on Sunday, October 8, 1961, held in the same auditorium, were read. In attendance were Supreme Officers: Hon. Pres. Marie Prisland, President Antonia Turek, Secretary Albina Novak, Treasurer Josephine Železnikar; Auditors: Ann Podgoršek, Vickie Faletič, and Frances Gaspich. Director of Women's Activities: Elizabeth Zefran; Editor, Corinne Leskovar; State President Rose Kraemer and Past President Josephine Livek. Greetings were read from State President of Ohio—Michigan, Ella Starin. State President of Colorado—Kansas, Mo.; Anna Pachak, State President of Penna., Mary Tom-sio, and State President of California, Rose Scoff.
Elizabeth Zefran spoke on the sports activities, also on the bowling tournament held in La Salle last March. She stated that the 1964 Midwest Tournament will be held in West Allis, Wisconsin.
Secretary Albina Novak spoke on the 13th National Convention to he held in Chicago at the Morrison Hotel on May 17-20, 1964. She emphasized the importance of having visitors join their delegates from all the states in see-
ing the great city of Chicago and its numerous cultural centers.
Br. no. 24, represented by Secretary, Angela Strukel, stated that they have 175 adult and 80 juvenile memb»rs, and it keeps her busy reminding some members to pay their dues.
Br. 72, Pullman, Illinois was represented by three officers and the speaker was Wilma Zagar, reporter in Zarja. She stated that the members of her branch are most willing to make the contribution to the Zarja expense fund and the 25 cents asked is not beyond the means of any member to pay.
Mildred James as president of branch 95 in So. Chicago reported that her branch pays the 25 cents per member from its treasury. It is no problem to raise money through special fund-raising projects, which are supported most willingly by all the members. Her branch requested that the branch reports be printed only in one language in Zarja.
Mrs. James also gave a short Inspiring talk on the subject: "In Unity There is Strength”, stating that we should all work hard to get new members and cooperate in every way possible for the good of the members and the organization.
Branch no. 99, Elmhurst was represented with four officers. President, Victoria Volk stated that the members in ber branch are most willing to contribute to every good cause and Zarja is certainly of benefit to all.
Editor Corinne Leskovar explained the many problems which face her work and how much it means to the publication to have good relations between the reporters and her office.
STATE CONVENTION MINUTES (Cont’d):
Br. 89, Oglesby, represented by Secretary, Nancy Klec-zewski as delegate, gave a report on the 25th anniversary held on May 13th, which was a success and thanked Secretary, Albina Novak, for attending. Frances Nemeth (89) also mentioned that the annual Zveza Day in Lemont, 111., brings out a large number of members and should also be attended by the Supreme Officers. President Antonia Turek responded with regrets that this was impossible this year; but that in the future, every consideration would be given for Officers’ attendance at Zveza Days in Lemont.
Br. 89 members were reported to be reluctant to pay the additional 25 cents contribution asked of them yearly. They ask that Zarja be printed on cheaper paper and also have a larger print.
Mrs. Prisland spoke on the new cookbook and the features to be incorporated in it. The cookbook is expected to be ready in October. The purchase price was discussed and agreed that postage and handling be charged separately.
Mrs. Turek spoke on the recent campaign results and announced that Clevelander, Vickie Faletič was the winner. Mrs. Novak gave the list of the other top workers, some of whom were also present, namely: Mrs. Ann Podgoršek, Mrs. Kraemer and she herself. Mrs. Faletič, member of branch 25 and Supreme Auditor was on the top of the list of campaign workers for the second consecutive campaign. All in attendance were in favor of meeting a-gain in 1964 and Oglesby, was chosen as the site. Date will be announced later.
Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p. m. with prayer led by the president.

Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Albin Jordan, 25th anniversarians of recent date. Thanks to Mrs. Anna Pachak, State Pres, of Colorado for greetings and wishes extended to us. We love to read her reports in Zarja and to learn of the activities of all our branches, west, east, north and south!
Hope this serves to remind those owing dues ot clear up this matter before the close of the year.

No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. The 1st of
Oct. our branch celebrated the 34th anniversary of its founding! A good lunch was served, planned weeks before at our Sept. meeting. We also prepared liquid refreshments to help add enjoyment to the celebration. I wish to thank our sisters who took care of this, for giving their time and effort. We will have more about it next month which will be after our October meeting.
Our secretary wishes to remind us that when the beneficiary of a member dies, please ask for a change of beneficiary form so that the proper changes can be made. Otherwise, it is too much trouble and leads to misunderstanding. We forget these things, but they are very important.
In August, Antonia Nemec underwent surgery for which we all extend heartiest get-well wishes. May our Blessed Mother, Help of the Sick, help her and all teh sick members of our branch mentioned previously.
So much for now! We hope to see you at our meetings and we hope to see you on Sun., Oct. 13th at St. Vitus Auditorium. Let’s make it the best Ohio Bazaar ever!

No. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. School bells are again ringing for young and old, and vacations are by-gones; Meeting are in full swing and members are planning on special events in their various localities. Our fall meting was attended by several new and old faces

No. 25, Cleveland, Ohio. — Surprise! Our branch came out on top in the "Supreme President’s Campaign”! It goes to show we really tried hard. Congratulations to all the other branches who were runners-up in this tough campaign. A total of 340 new members were signed by efforts of the S.W.U. combined branches. Some figure! We are happy to welcome them to the organization. A visit to our meetings is the friendliest way to keep in touch. Why don’t you take time off and make it a point to attend and see your friends at the monthly meetings. Staying-at-home gets you nowhere. Treat yourself to an evening out.
Oct. 13, on a Sunday afternoon, should be nice for everyone to come to the combined branches’ bazaar. It will be held at the St. Vitus Audi-
and it surely is a pleasure to have them. Final plans were made for the Poultry and Sausage card party to be held Sunday, Oct. 27, 1903. It will be held at the Public Tavern at 922 — So. 2nd St., and will start at 2 p. m. All members and their friends are invited. A Rummage Sale also will take place in the near future. Save your old clothing, dishes and glassware.
Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. Krosl who recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. A surprise get-togther was planned by their friends and relatives at Purdy Lake. . May you enjoy many more happy years together. Mrs. Krosl has been our member for many years and this year is serving as vice-president.
Josephine Kolar, our president, was vacationing at her son’s cottage at Purdy Lake. We are sorry to hear that her husband met with an accident this summer and is stil hospitalized.
Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. Donald Walsh on their new son, Douglas. Now for the vacationers! The Geo. Groth and Ed. Schulta families spent their vacations around the Dells area. They sure must have had a fine time.
The A. Frangesh family also spent some time at the Dells, Cave of the Mounds and Little Norway. Mr. and Mrs. Stearle were visiting their son and his family at Colmbus, O. Our rec, secretary, Vickie Sporis has been touring with her museum club. Father Okorn spent his vacation around Cleveland and from all reports really enjoyed himself. On Aug. 25th Christine Rebernisek, Ceil Groth and I attended the State Convention at Chicago. The whole day was delightful and memorable. We enjoyed every minute of the time spent there. To all our sick and shut-in members, I wish a speedy recovery. Our next meeting date, Oct. 13th. We’ll be seeing you.

No. 52, Hibbing-Kitzville, Minn. Dear sisters, our branch held it’s meeting, Aug. 7th at the Little Grove. There were 21 members present. Our business discussion was very brief. We have some members to enroll, girls, to replace with the recent cancellation of two members. Let’s all get on the ball and see if we can find a few new members! We are very sorry to see sisters Mray Russo and Ruth Dear leaving the state to seek employment elsewhere. We hope and pray they will find prosperity and greater happiness wherever they may go. We also wish to express our deepest sympathy to sisters Mary Techar on the loss of her dearly beloved father, John Hren and to the Mancuso family on the loss of her most beloved mother, Mrs. Carmella Mancuso. We all wish to express our deepest and heartfelt condolences to these members. We hope and pray that our wishes may ease the pain which the death of a loved one brings. Both carried a heavy cross on this world and we hope the Good Lord will find a wonderful place for them in His heavenly kingdom. Eternal rest to them and may the perpetual light shine upon them. fast our summer has gone! Hope all of our readers had lovely vacations.
Our July meeting was hed at the home of Leona Moler where everyone had an enjoyable evening. Games were played and lunch was served The door prize was received by Frances Hribar — a lovely crocheted handerchief. Our Aug. meeting was held at the home of Frances Stanec and we had a lovely turnout in spite of the rainy evening. Games with beautiful prizes for the winners delighted all. A delicious lunch was served. All members wish Leona Moler a speedy recovery and also hope Viola Logar is doing well by now.
Our treasurer, Mary Macelc became a grandmother again. Congratulations! We are happy to say the little fellow, Frank Macek, is now a member of our juvenile group.
Our deepest condolences to Eva Daf-falo on the loss of her father.
We hear wedding bells and they’re for Patty Stanec and Edward Kaziner of Cleveland who were married Sept. 21st. Patty is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stanec... We all wish the couple a very happy future. Hope everyone of our members had a very ncei summer. Mary Moler, Reporter
No. 66, Canon City, Colo. Our July
10th meeting was held at the Blue Flame Room at the Greely Gas Bldg. Thirteen members were present and heard Zveza Day reports. Everyone was well- pleased. I would like to write a little more about our Colorado Zveza Day. Altho I had a big report for the Sept. issue, I thought maybe it would be best to add a few remarks for the Oct. issue. We worked on our theme on the Sacred Heart of Jesus as it was June, the month of the Sacred Heart. Mr. Frank Cervi, our toastmaster, donated 150 holy cards and a plaque of the Sacred Heart which we gave as a door prize. Mrs.
Mishmas of Pueblo was the lucky lady. Mr. Cervi Is our distinguished mortic-ina here in Canon City. Our neighboring branches brought in fancy work for the display booth as we didn’t have one. We also gave the articles as door prizes. The following ladies were lucky: Helen Davidson and Frances Fassler of Canon City; Mrs. Snyder of Pueblo. As we were seated at the banquet tables,
I	don’t have recollection of what the prizes were but I’m sure they were all beautiful and valuable. We thank our neighboring branches for sending us the fancy work. It was greatly appreciated.
For our special prize, we bought a fully cooked, boneless ham and paid for it from our treasury. It was then given to Frances Simonich of Pueblo. A 36-inch doily was crocheted and donated by Hannah Adamic and Amy Del Monte of Florence, Colo., received it. Mrs. Adamic still does a lot of hand work in spite of her serious illness of a few years ago. She also attends all our meetings. Thank you, Mrs. Adamic. Julia Skrabec of Pueblo and at one time a member of our branch, made and donated a heart-shaped silk smocked pillow; Hannah Kimmick was the winner. By the way, Julia is my sister. A pair of hand-embroidered and crocheted pilow cases were made and donated by Catherine Scavarda and Ila Javernick was the lucky lady.
The following ladies served 011 the committees: Chairman of Banquet was Catherine Scavarda with Sophie Sta-rika and Mary Louise Penney. Ticket chairman was Mildred Pierce with Joan Lippis. Prize chairman was Julia Javernick with Ila Javernick. Late afternoon refreshments committee, Julia Javernick and Dorothy Legan.
For me, this convention and Zveze Day was quite an experience and I loved every minute of it. But, a lot of thanks goes to my committees who gave so freely of their time and help. Thanks! Also, many thanks to the ladies donating for the prize list. My fondest memories will be of the wonderful cooperation of the members, the help of the committees and meeting with so many lovely members.
Our next meeting will be held on Oct. 13th at 2 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Mary Ann Starika, 811 Myrtle Ave., unless notified otherwise. We have the following members on the sick list: Frances Fassler, Mary Louise Penney (both convalescing from surgery) and Mary Lauriski, also hospitalized but now recovering at home. ..No. 72 Pullman, III. As you know, Mrs. Stephie Sheehy invited us to her home for our August meeting. We were so happy to see such a large group come out, and we had a marvelous time. Stephie treated us royally. She has a lovely home and her welcome was just as lovely. Speaking for the group, all I can say is “thank you, Stephie, for such a grand afternoon.”
Three of us — Mrs. Dresher, Mrs. Bezlaj and I — attended the Illinois
—	Indiana State Convention. We enjoyed it very much. It was a day very well-spent. We will give you a report on it at the next meeting.

We have lost our dear member, Kate Bucich, nee Brncich, late of 9632 Muskegon Ave., fond mother of Peter Brncich, John, Albert and Rudy Bucich, loving grandmother of twelve grandchildren, dear mother-in-law of Eva Brncich, Jean, Eleanor and Esther Bucich. Kate Bucich was a gallant and rare person who never stopped fighting for her beliefs. Even tho her interests were always controversial, she inspired deep love and affection among her friends and family. Her ready and infectious wit will always be among our fondest memories of her. summer and the beginning of autumn made our Sept. meeting colorful with a large attendance which led us into new discussions of activities and responsibilities. Much has been accomplished at this meeting. Our program for Oct. 2nd will be a fashion show, then on Nov. 6th, a turkey prize project. For Dec. 4th, we have our Christmas party with a program and entertainment. Plan to attend! It was a gala evening at the Sept. session. Since Eve ate the first apple, more than 7000 varieties have been developed; of these, about 16 are commercially important. Apples are a good food; good for dieters, good aid to a clear complexion, good sources of minerals and vitamins, and just plain good to eat! There are many, many ways to prepare apples, but what a-bout a strudel? Most of you are experts, I’m sure, in making strudel, but what about the Homemaker?
Here is a recipe that is basic and should be of interest to those who have never baked "apfelstrudel”.
APPLE STRUDEL
2	cups sifted flour % teaspoon salt
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 tablespoons cooking oil % cup lukewarm water Vi. cup melted butter
1	V2 cups white bread crumbs browned in y2 cup butter
7	cups washed, pared, quartered, thinly sliced tart cooking apples (you may use water-pack canned apples, drained — three 1 lb., 4 oz. cans). Vi to % cup seedless raisin, if desired Confectioners’ sugar for sprinkling on top after baking
Sift the flour with salt into a large bowl; make a well in the center and put in the egg and cooking oil. Stir while adding the water gradually to make a soft, rather sticky dough. Work the dough in the bowl until it comes away from the sides; turn out and knead for about 15 minutes with little or no additional flour. Frequently slap the dough down hard on the board and work it until it is elas tic and silky-smooth. It must not stick to the hands or board. Form into a ball, set on a clean towel and let rest for 1 hour in a warm spot, covered with a bowl which has been warmed in hot water. (One nutritionist suggests warming the rolling pin for one step to success). While the dough is resting, cover the kitchen table or a card table with a cloth (a clean, pressed piece of sheeting will do) and rub in about 1 to 2 tablespoons flour, brushing off any excess. Then place the ball of dough in the center of the cloth and roll with the warm rolling pin into a sheet Vs”
thick. Lift and turn to prevent sticking to the cloth. Take off your rings! Now stretch dough, using your floured hands palm side down under the dough. Work carefully, stretching from the center toward the outside. Don’t raise your knuckles too high — make a fist and lift from the wrists only. Work gently or you’ll puncture dough (the holes aren't difficult to patch, though). Stretch as thin as possible, moving around the table, unless you can get someone to help you. Make it thin as paper. It should cover the table and hang slightly over the sides — an oval or rectangle a-bout 36” to 40” long and 30” wide. Trim off the edges, which will be a little thick. If you’ve made a hole, moisten the area around it with a little water and patch with a thin piece of dough from the trimmings. Let the dough rest and dry for 15 minutes, while you peel, core and slice the apples. Now brush entire surface with melted butter, then sprinkle with the bread crumbs. Mix sliced apples, raisins, sugar and cinnamon and cover the dough with this mixture. Fold the end pieces of dough over apples. Now lift the corners of the cloth and let the pastry roll up. Stop after each turn, patting filled pastry to keep shape even. Roll until stretched dough is used up. Brush with melted butter and slide strudel onto a lightly buttered baking sheet, curving it into a U shape. Bake in a moderately hot oven 375° F., for about 40 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve warm. Makes 10 to 12 servings.
BAKED ACORN SQUASH WITH APPLES
6 large tart apples % cup firmly packed brown sugar
2	tablespoons lemon juice Vi teaspoon nutmeg Vi teaspoon cinnamon % cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese 4 medium-size acorn squash
8	teaspoons butter
Wash, pare, core and dice the apples. Add cheese and seasonings. Wash squash and cut in half lengthwise. Scoop out seeds and fiber. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of the squash halves so they sit firmly in the pan. Fill the centers with a mound of apple mixture. Top with a teaspoon of butter. Pour about 1” of water into the pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in a moderately hot oven, 375° F., for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until squash is very tender and apples are transparent. Remove foil and top each with a little additional grated cheese. Bake 5 to 10 minutes more or until cheese melts. Makes 8 servings.
APPLES
Scientists say:
Fruits are important food items in the American diet. Almost ten per cent of the food dollar is spent for fruits and of this at least ten per cent is spent for apples. Raw apples used in the quantities usually eaten are good sources of Vitamin C. The mild acidity of most fruits and the texture of the flesh fiber of many of them combine to make raw fruit an especially pleasant and wholesome food with which to end a meal, because these properties leave the teeth and gums in a clean, fresh condition, and also aid the digestion of the meal as a whole. Hence, as often as one can conveniently arrange to do so, let the the last course of each meal be not anything sticky, pasty, or artificially sweetened, but rather a fruit salad, an apple-celery salad, or a raw apple.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS
A cake of compressed yeast usually keeps about two weeks if refrigerated.
Leftover egg yolks will keep up to three days if kept in cold water in the refrigerator. (Cover egg yolks with water in a cup or jar.)
Easy-care cottons will look better if taken out of the dryer while still slightly damp, then hung up to finish drying.
Take care when changing fuses in the home. Stand on a dry board, and change the fuses only with dry hands.
The top pastry of your pie not brown enough? Brushing the top round with milk before baking usually does the trick.
Make sure there isn’t a single speck of fat on your beater when you are beating egg whites or you won’t get maximum volume.

“Don’t be foolish and not care what other people think of you,” the prelate advised. “It’s your obligation to be attractive.”
“You must keep your thinking and speaking that of a lady.”
“You can’t be a saint unless you are a lady first,” said the bishop.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING (Continued):
The Juveniles’ Howling League ol' Cleveland had ten teams bawling all season and concluded with a tournament in April. Mrs. Pauline Vegal is their instructress and league secretary.
In Cleveland, the drill teams and baton twirler groups are still very active and practice every Saturday under the guidance of Ernestine Jevec. These two juvenile instructors deserve all credit for sacrificing their time and efforts to take care of our juvenile activity in Cleveland.
Loss of our Supreme Juvenile Director, Christine Menart, was a great blow to our organization. Christine was tops as a juvenile director and will be missed by not only her local group, but all of us. May her soul rest in peace.
Zveza Day at Lemont, 111. this year was on July 21st. They had a very nice representation of members from Chicago and adjoining cities, plus a bus from Indianapolis, and another bus from Milwaukee — West Allis branches. I was looking forward to arranging a bus from Cleveland, but had no luck in getting enough passengers, due to other trips and vacations. I hope that next year, we will all attend from Cleveland as well.
On June 23rd, I visited Branch 28 at Calumet, Mich. It was a great pleasure to meet so many of these fine members and I am proud to say that Br. 28 is composed of a very fine, energetic and happy membership.
Our Slovenian Women’s Union was very well-represented in Slovenia this summer with 140 tourists. I am overjoyed that we were so successful in organizing the two excursions that comprised perhaps two of the largest groups visiting Slovenia this year. It was a good promotion of our Union, because not only did we show what a large and wonderful Slovenian Women’s Union we have here in America, but we did a service to our own members, by giving them the extra special group rate.
Cleveland branch will have their Bazaar and Fair on Sunday, Oct. 13, 1963. This day will be a very active one, for there will be baking demonstrations, a style show for members and performances by our juveniles. Each branch will have a booth to display and sell their hand-made wares. Good luck to all the participants!
Since the cook-book announcement was published in Zarja, I have been swamped with orders and hope to fulfill them soon and we expect to have some for disposal at the Fair.
Our new, revised cookbook will be ready for us soon. We have tried to make it most interesting and inviting, so that members who already have a copy of the first book, will want the second book, too. Orders for the book are coming in from all over — we hope to start the ball rolling at the earliest possible moment after the books are ready. Secretaries will be able to order larger a-mounts for distribution at their localities. I’d like to suggest that at your future meetings, a count of how many books will be needed is taken, so that the officer in charge can send me a direct order. This will save us a lot of extra postage and handling. Best wishes to all.

Boston Mutual Fund shares were sold. Sale price was $10,019,46, purchase price was $9,494.00. The gain on the
sale is $525.46. Total interest received from these shares amounted to $1,2)70.40. Total gain on this investment was $1,795.86.
This month, $23,000.00 U. S. Treasury bonds will mature, which will be re-invested.

The Benefit Fund is very low and has been for some time, therefore I recommend that it be combined with the Scholarship Fund.
We certainly wish to extend our thanks to the Supreme Officers, friends and branches, who so generously contributed to the Scholarship Fund. Mrs. Pachak, state president for Colorado donates her salary every year. Mrs. Rose Scoff, state president for California writes:
“When I saw the smiling and happy faces of our scholarship winners on the cover of Zarja, I knew where I will donate my salary. Zveza is doing a great work by giving scholarships and promoting education among our young people.”
Three scholarships were voted by the Scholarship Committee for 1963-64. The names and pictures of the Winners, together with my report, appeared in the July Zarja. The students are most grateful for our assistance towards their education.
Cook Book. At your request, I took over the revision and the editing of Zveza’s new Cook Book. In August’s Zarja, I published the Slovenian version of the material the book will contain. Great care was taken to edit the book to the best of my ability and I sincerely hope that it will meet with satisfactory approval.
Sheboygan branch presented a very successful Mothers’ Day program with 22 juniors participating. The program was so colorful that iti immediately enthused 6 new juniors to join the organization.
The State of Wisconsin convention, held in Milwaukee, was very successful. We were happy to have our charming editor Corinne Leskovar as guest speaker. The members loved her as well as her family, which accompanied her.
In June, I took the responsibility to be co-leader for 69 Zveza’s travelers to Europe with 4 stops en-route. It was
an enjoyable trip.	All the members and their escorts
were fine travelers.	In Slovenia, we were treated cordi-
ally by our relatives, friends and State officials, for which we are grateful.
Upon my return from Europe, a letter awaited me from I’rof. Timothy Smith of the University of Minnesota, regarding a collection of historical material pertaining to the Slovenian immigrants in America. While in Slovenia, we were approached by the representatives of the Ljubljana University Academy of Arts and Sciences for similar items. May I recommend to this meeting, that we accept this request and make some plans accordingly.

SUPREME SECRETARY’S REPORT
Greetings and sincere hopes that this meeting will be a success.
First of all, I wish to touch upon the Supreme President’s Membership Campaign, which closed on June 30, 1963. The results are published in the September Zarja. A total of 339 new members were enrolled in the campaign. I wish to express deepest appreciation to each and every officer and member who helped to increase the number of members in the branch and the organization as a whole. We lost 100 members by death from January 1, 19G3 until June 30, 19G3.	A total of $10,500.00 was paid out to
the beneficiaries.	The financial gain did not reach the
mark that we have been making during the past years. We have to expect that the expenses will be on the increase, because the number of claims are increasing. Furthermore, the trend of times reflects in the rising cost for the upkeep of the organization. Mrs. Prisland will report on the investments.
The 25 cents contribution from the members is sorely needed. I wish I could report that all the branches have done their duty in cooperating in this respect, but such is not the case. We have branches who did not as yet meet their obligation; that is, they have not complied with the decision of the Board, which was made for every and all members. If the decisions of the Directors’ meetings are not to be accepted, it becomes a waste of time and money to have these meetings. I hope earnestly that the existing situation will be remedied before the end of the year and every member will be contributing the 25 cents to the expense fund.
On May 19th, I attended the 35th anniversary of Branch 15 in Cleveland and the Ohio State Convention, which was held on the same day. I also visited the members of Branch 89 in Oglesby, 111,, who were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the branch on May 13th. It is a grand feeling to meet with our members and friends and make many new, personal acquaintances. This is the best way to stimulate interest in the members and to encourage the promotion of our purposes and aims.
The trip to Slovenia this summer was enjoyed by more than 200 of our members. The 2 bigger groups traveled by jet plane, although a good number chose to go via liner. The tour and pilgrimage to Lourdes, escorted by Mrs. Prisland and Mrs. Sietz was attended by members of all ages and enjoyed very much. My group made the trip directly to Slovenia. The August Hollander Travel Bureau of Cleveland is to be complimented for the excellent services rendered in every respect. The lower fare arrangements were a great incentive for our members to travel and many members are hoping to make other joint excursions in 19G4 with the reduced fare.
Mrs. Elizabeth Zefran arranged the trip to the Shrines in Canada and a large number of members took advantage of traveling to the so-far unknown places. For many of our older members, it was a wonderful opportunity to go places and have everything taken care of by those in charge.
Branch 2 worked very hard in promotion of the annual Zveza Pilgrimage at Lemont, Illinois, held on the third Sunday in July of every year. Mrs. Josephine Železnikar
and Corinne Leskovar, along with members of Branch 2, made the arrangements and they are to be complimented for their fine work. The State Convention held yesterday, August 25th, was also another successful event with many branches participating. They have shown by their attendance that they are interested in the organization and its future.
The new cookbook should be on the market in a few months. Mrs. Prisland’s contribution to the famous book is like presenting a beautiful bouquet to the homemakers, which will not wither, but bring joy and contentment to all its users.
Please accept my deepest gratitude to each and everyone for the cooperation rendered and I hope that the good Lord will continue to shower His blessings on all our work and decisions.

We have assembled again for our regular semi-annual meeting, in anticipation of our nation convention this coming year. I hope this meeting, which is very important, will be of benefit to our organization. It pleases me, that our travelers have returned safely from their trips, well-rested and ready for work once again.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT OF AUDITING BOARD
Sincerest greetings to all our Directors gathered here lor our semi-annual meeting.
With the convention nearing, there will be many discussions. May they all bring fruitful results not only l'or a bigger membership, but to bring satisfaction to all our members that they may always be proud to belong to our wonderful organization.
We, the auditors, have carefully examined all the books
—	Secretary, Treasurer, Presidents of Scholarship Comit-tee and Editor of Zarja and found all in perfect order. We also examined the contents of the safety deposit box, consisting of bonds, savings accounts and other important documents at the Metropolitan State Bank and everything there, too, was found in perfect order.
I am certain I can truthfully speak for every member and also, the many husbands and families of our members, who read our Zarja, as to how much our little magazine is loved. Congratulations to our Editor. The columns, including Pots and Pans, are regular reading habits of our members. The girls especially love reading new recipes. Then, too, the reports of the various branches are interesting. I would like to see more branches reporting on their activities at least once in a while, especially the branches who are heard from so seldom and seem to be at a standstill. We know that really they’re not and the officers are constantly at work, striving to keep their members busy.
During the President’s Membership Drive, our branch enrolled 17 adults and 7 juveniles — of these — 8 adults and 1 juvenile are to my credit. Congratulations to all our workers for the fine showing!
Minnesota Zveza Day will be held in Hibbing on Sept. 8, 1963, at which time, Br. 56 will also celebrate their 30th anniversary. Congratulations and best wishes to them. Our branch has already filled a chartered bus and plans to attend the event. This will be my first absence from the Minnesota Zveza Day celebration as this year, I will be in California for an extended stay. But, I will be with you in heart and spirit.
The death of our Juvenile Director, Christine Menart deeply saddened me. May her soul rest in peace. Our organization shall miss her as she was a conscientious and hard working secretary. Our sympathy also to State President Rose Scoff of San Francisco, Cal., who recently lost her husband, Joseph. The Gornick family of Chisholm is extended deepest condolences, also, on the death of John Gornick, well-known businessman of that city. His bereaved family includes our Supreme President, Antonia Turek. May their souls rest in sweet peace.
A warm welcome back home from their trips abroad to our two Directors here today, Mrs. Prisland and Mrs. Novak. God’s blessing on all our deliberations.

REPORT OF THE SECOND SUPREME AUDITOR
Warm and friendly greetings this pleasant day to all our supreme board members.
In auditing the records everything was ship-shape. With the well-managed arrangement of the ledgers they facilitated smooth inspection. I would likte to add that Albina, our supreme secretary does an excellent job.
Members of Br. 25 have been anxious and especially interested in making successful programs. Every effort has been applied by our branch to aid new ideas. We have chosen Sept. 29th for our 35th anniversary, which is a “big moment” for No. 25. The selected committee plans a short 'entertaining program, invited a number of distinguished guests and it will be topped with an “Otoničar” prepared dinner.
The Junior division and their activities have been constant all season, thanks to Mrs. Ernestine Jevec who has supervised the drill team. Our gratitude also goes to Pauline Vegel soon to be active again with the bowling teams with many junior members participating.
Oct. 13th is another "Z” day celebrating a yearly bazaar sponsored by the combined branches of the S. W. U.
organization. It’s magnificent how the ladies of various branches respond to hard work in order to strengthen the ties of sisterhood and friendship among members.
Mrs. Pauline Stampfel, pres, of No. 25 a generous and helpful member is always eag'er to assist to any necessary need.
Mrs. Stella Koporc, our vice pres, is a wonderful volunteer in doing club work.
Mrs. Josephine Golinski, the very efficient secretary, is generous to a fault, donating extra time and many after-meeting luncheons.
Mrs. Mary Otoničar, a champion among members, her works have proved fruitful with her untiring devotion to Br. No. 25. Judging by her labors, it makes one feel she is still the youngest member of the branch.
Mrs. Dorothy Strniša, our recording secretary, is the best in the business of taking down minutes of a meeting. She’s a determined lady with the stamina of a youthful, spry woman. We have an admirable staff of officers at Br. No. 25.
In proving the progress of Br. 25, 42 new members have been acquired through the Supreme President’s Campaign, in honor of Mrs. Toni Turek who is a marvelous inspiration to the organization. Having the qualification and initiative of a fine representative for the S. W. U., she has spent countless hours in planning to promote projects for the interest of all branches of the Slovenian Women’s Union. Na Zdravje!

Our branch celebrated its 35th anniversary on June 23rd with a Family Picnic at Mrs. Mary Kunstek’s summer home in Yorkville, and the following Sunday, we had Mass offered for the living and deceased members.
Since the first of the year, we lost seven members, who have gone to their eternal reward. May they rest in peace.
There were five of us from Joliet, who joined the Chicago group on a pilgrimage to Canada and the eight days were filled with prayers and blessings. We all thank Mrs. Zefran and Mrs. Petrovič for having arranged such a wonderful tour and for taking care of everything.

EDITOR’S REPORT
In the six months between January and June, 1963, the monthly organ engaged in three major promotions, in addition to the regular branch events and reports by our diligent reporters.
The excursions to Europe took prominence because of the general interest among both the English speaking and Slovenian speaking members. The success of the trips attests to the importance of Zarja’s publicity and for this, we can be proud. It was a worthwhile venture.
The Supreme President’s Membership Campaign which began in October of last year, was our very important promotion among the branches. Besides the regular advertisements for It, almost every reporter wrote of it and a number of our Supreme Officers had fine articles. In this respect, Zarja tried to give it the most appealing treatment.
Our May issue of Zarja carried the historical data of 60 S. W. U. mothers, chosen by their respective branches as their “Mothers of the Year”. Each one was given equal coverage according to the material sent in. This special feature was very interesting to me as the Editor, as well as it must have been to the membership. Most of the mothers listed are members of long-standing and their stories were very inspirational and wholesome.
In this period of 6 months, we had 4 issues of Zarja on 16 pages and only 2 issues on 32 pages, they being the April or Easter issue and May — Mother’s Day issue. Due to one unknown element every month, that is, the amount of material which will be sent in, each issue had its own problems and due to the preponderence of material, sacrificed were: Junior Page in 4 issues and Financial Report in January and February issues which was then resumed in the April issue. The complete Roster of Officers for 1963 was printed in the April issue. Again, may I state, that all this wonderful progress we can boast in the popularity of Zarja is due in major part to the contributions received from our regular columnists and the reporters. It lends a definite prestige to our organ to know that it has the interest of those who write and keep Zarja full of news.
I have also been dealing with the matter of mailing list changes in our many states. The amount of address changes received this month in the office is enormous. People today are moving more rapidly than one can imagine. Therefore, the work of keeping close watch on the fluctuations of the mailing list has become a larger effort than ever before. In the last period of 6 months, I have seen personally to the changes, deletions and additions to our mailing list and am trying to eliminate a problem within most branches, and that is, to take off all members immediately when notified and to make all additions as soon as they are received. The hours spent In doing this work at the printing shop are many, indeed; however, it is my serious intention to see to it that all changes are made correctly and expediently. I will have several proposals on this matter which will come under discussion at this meeting for which I ask your recommendations. Over and above my work as editor, I have participated in our local projects primarily with Branch No. 2 which has a fine working committee and we have promoted our own activities such as our Mother’s Day party and birthday parties. It has been my pleasure to assist them In all these things. Also, this year’s Lemont Zveza Day on July 21st was very well-attended and highly successful as regards our organization. Everyone complimented our S. W. U. on having such a fine affair. This type of commendation is the best publicity for us and the best reputation the organization can receive. It has given us ample reward for our efforts.
In conclusion, I bid you well in our fair city and extend heartiest wishes in all your deliberations.
On May 5th, I attended the Wisconsin State Convention held in Milwaukee under the auspices of Br. 12. My compliments to the committee and state officers and sincere thanks for being so well received.

REPORT OF THE SUPREME VICE-PRESIDENT
Esteemed Supreme Officers of Slovenian Women’s Union:
My warmest greeting to you all!
The progress of the Presidential Membership Campaign had gotten off at a good start and am hoping that the appeal I made to all of the branches for getting new members was heeded to make it the most successful membership drive in the history of Slovenian Women’s Union.
Our Supreme President, Toni Turek, who is a hard worker and very diligent, deserves our full support not only during this campaign but in all campaigns.
If we work hard there is success and it is up to each and every member to help in the campaign so that the Slovenian Women’s Union organization will flourish. Our branch increased its membership by 16 members.
I had attended the Wisconsin State Day held in Milwaukee, Wis., of which Branch No. 12 was the hostess and it turned out to be a success.
Members and non-members are patiently waiting for the new Cookbook; it is remarkable how the outsider is most anxious in purchasing a copy. Perhaps we can get this “outsider” as a member, through the Cookbook.
Our branch is celebrating its 35th Anniversary on Sunday, October 6, 1963 with a High Mass at 7:30 a. m. at St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church. The members will receive Holy Communion in a body. Following the Holy Mass a breakfast will be served at which time we will honor our organizer, Mrs. Josephine Schlosar and the charter members.
We participated in the Bowling Tournament by sending in 5 teams and West Allis will host 1964 Mid-West Bowling Tournament.
I	am sorry that I was unable to attend Zveza Day in Lemont, 111., this year, on account of illness in my home.

REPORT OF THE STATE PRESIDENT OF COLORADO — KANSAS — MISSOURI
Esteemed officers — again the time has come for my report.
The State meeting held at Canon City, Colo, on June 30,
1963, with all Colorado branches participating was very successful. Regret that our neighbor states sould not attend, due to the distances.
Our Convention discussed many aspects of the organization, especially Zarja, the monthly organ. We would request that it should be larger with more pages, as it carries a message important to the entire organization — it is the heart of the Union.
The next Convention of our branches will be in Sept.,
1964, at Pueblo, with Br. 3 as hostesses.
Congratulations to all our campaign workers! I believe
that every day should be a campaign day for all of us!
Compliments to our editor and the columnists, who have given so much of interest to us through the publication of Zarja.
Deepest sympathy to our President, Mrs. Turek, on the loss of her brother and to the Menart family on the loss of our fine officer, Christine.

REPORT OF STATE PRESIDENT OF WISCONSIN
Welcome and sincere greetings ot our Supreme Board;
I	am indeed happy to be among those offering their best wishes.
In the month of April I attended the bowling tournament in Joliet, 111.
On May 5th, Wisconsin held its 5th State Convention in Milwaukee and it turned out to be a very successful event. Sheboygan again came by us, and was very well represented with their charming and delightful group of ladies. Willard had a fine and friendly group of members escorted by Mary Staut, and also a fine delegation from West Allis, and the two Milwaukee branches. My main object, and at all the convention meetings I stress that point highly, is to obtain new members.
In July I attended Zveza Day in Lemont, 111. It was a beautiful and sunny day. I was really impressed with the attendance, as there were so many members on vacations.
In conclusion, I am incapable of expressing my personal gratitude to all who have helped me in this term, and co-operated with me in all ways. May God bless you all.	Rose	Kraemer

The President thanked the officers for their conscientious reports and commented that they show progress for the Union in the past six months.
The Board of Directors expressed their deepest sympathy to the Supreme Officers, who have lost their loved ones recently, namely: Rose Scoff, State President of California, who mourns her husband, Joseph, and Antonia Turek, Supreme President, who lost her brother, John Gorniclc. Especially saddened at. the untimely death of Supreme Juvenile Director, Christine Menart of Forest City, Pa., the Board offers sincere condolences to her bereaved family.
The first order of business after the reading of reports was a recapitulation of the previous day’s State convention (for the States of Illinois and Indiana) held at Chicago, 111., and attended by the Supreme Board.
The officers were pleased at the fine representation of delegates and visitors including those from the neighboring State of Wisconsin, presided by gracious State President, Mildred James.
DEEPEST SYMPATHY
The Board of Directors of Slovenian Women’s Union, joins the membership in extending deepest condolences to the family of Supreme Juvenile Director, Christine Menart of Forest City, Penna., and to the officers and members of Branch no. 7 of that city, who have lost their fine and devoted officer. May her soul rest in the sweet peace of God’s holy love. Equally saddened are all the members of the San Francisco, California area, who mourn the passing of Joseph Scoff, husband of State President, Rose Scoff. To our Supreme Officer, Rose, and her family — heartfelt sympathy .
The well-known Gornick family of Chisholm, Minnesota, grieve the untimely death of John Gornick, beloved brother of Supreme President, Antonia Turek, who is survived by wife, Mary and a large family.
We pray for the repose of their souls!
The results of the meeting itself will be detailed in future reports by the state officers. Those in attendance heartily approved plans discussed for the upcoming national convention and agreed to support the program which the local committee will arrange, including attendance at the various convention events and banquets. Also to be complimented were the fine staff of workers who prepared for the 111.-—Ind. State Convention dinner, etc., namely, the officers and members of Br. 2. The program following a delicious dinner was also very enjoyable and brought a touch of Slovenian culture with participation by juveniles and adults. The Board was extremely happy to engage in vigorous discussion with the delegates on Zarja, the new cookbook and of course, the convention in May, 1964.
The afternoon session of Monday, Aug. 25th, adjourned at 5 p. m., whereupon the Directors visited the Morrison Hotel in downtown Chicago to meet the manager and discuss with him the facilities needed for the S. W. U. 13th National hotel conference were then discussed at the Tuesday meeting. Accompanying the Board of Directors was Supreme Women’s Activities Director, Elizabeth Zefran.
Meeting commenced Tuesday morning at 9:30 a. m. at the Home Office. The President opened discussion by complimenting the workers of the Coupon Campaign, which closed June 30, 1963. She stated that the campaign brought good results attesting to the hard work of local officers and members.
The Secretary announced the final talley of new members as 339 and winner among the workers is Vicki Faletič, Br. 2>5 and the Supreme Auditor here present at the meeting. Her personal award from the Supreme President will be presented at the 35th Anniversary celebration of Br. 25 in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sept. 29th.
The total number of new members enrolled by Mrs. Faletič was 10 adults and 32 juveniles. Campaign winners were:

cause of the concurrence of the two events in Cleveland and Strabane, the President hoped a change of dates would be made. In anticipation of this, the President will be the official representative and will arrange a large Cleveland representation to attend the Penna. State meeting.
Official representatives appointed were: Supreme Treasurer, Josephine Železnikar to Minnesota; Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak to Cleveland (Br. 25), and Supreme President to Penna. Local officers were also asked to attend the events in their vicinities.
President also extended an invitation to Founder and Honorary President, Marie Prisland, to attend as the official representative of Zveza, the combined Cleveland branches’ “Ohio Bazaar and Fair”, Oct. 13, 1963. Mrs. Prisland promised to try to attend the event in order to help promote Zveza activities by reporting on it inZarja, especially with the idea of furthering Slovenian homemak-ing and domestic arts.
The recent State meeting at Canon City, Colorado was, by all reports, highly successful. State President, Anna Pachak, and the hostess branch of No. 66 are to be complimented on the fine event. The President regretfully had to decline their invitation to attend, as it was not possible for her or any Board member, to make the trip. For next year, perhaps, the President will plan on taking her vacation there, in time to visit Pueblo for the Sept, 1964 convention.
Lemont Zveza Day, July 19, 1964, will be the observance of the 25th annual pilgrimage of S. W. U. As president of hostess br. 2, Chicago, Supr. Treasurer, Josephine Ze-
leznikar extended the invitation to all Supreme Officers to attend, if possible. This affair is one of the most important yearly functions of the organizations bringing members and friends together from the entire midwestern area.
Due to the recent demise of the Supreme Juvenile Director, Christine Menart, which saddened the Board deeply, the President opened discussion on the vacant position and expressed the need for a good juvenile director to to write for juniors in Zarja and to organize activities throughout the branches. The Board agreed that the vacancy will not be filled until the coming convention.
The discussion was opened on the Pre-Convention Membership Campaign; so called, because it will terminate just before the national convention. Exact dates are, Oct. 1, 1963' until March 31st, 1964. Cash prizes will be awarded to all workers at the following rates:
Class A member: $.50 Class B member: $1.00 Junior member: $.25
In addition to the cash prizes, the winner will be named "Convention Queen” and the runner-up will be the “Princess”. The crowning ceremony will be made at the Convention. The Queen’s prize will be A PAID FARE, ROUND-TRIP, to and from the Convention City, Chicago, Illi. All the Officers agreed that this campaign will be a very important one and will need the energetic support of every branch and every member.
On the subject of the 13th National Convention, the Board of Directors discussed various phases of the 3-day meeting. The site of the Convention will be the Morrison Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, which will also house delegates and visitors. Nominal rates for rooms were agreed to. Delegates will receive reservation cards directly from the Hotel in ample time. The special events of the Convention will include:
Saturday, May 16, Pilgrimage and overnight stay at Le-mont, 111. Franciscan Fathers’ Shrine of Marija Pomagaj. (This in order to accomodate many members, who have wished to visit Lemont and could not because of transportation problems. Convention-bound buses will be able to leave home cities one day earlier in order to visit Lemont on Saturday. Candlelight procession and over-night accommodations will be arranged there.)
Sunday, May 17, official opening of Convention — Solemn High Mass, 11:30 a. m., at St. Stephen’s Church, W. 22nd Place and Wolcott Ave., Chicago, 111. Mass will be followed by dinner, program and social hour at St. Stephen’s Hall.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 18, 19, 20, 1964,
9:30 a. m., Convention meetings at Morrison Hotel. During the course of the three day program, a sight-seeing tour of Chicago will be arranged. The Grand Convention Banquet will take place Tuesday evening at the Embassy Room of the hotel. The dinner, program and crowning of the Convention Queen will be arranged for the enjoyment of all delegates, visitors and friends.
Convention discussion also brought hopes by all that charter buses for visitors from all S. W. U. states would be arranged so that the Convention would be the biggest and best ever in the history of the organization. The local committee, comprised of Supreme Officers and branch Officers of Chicago will do all possible to assure a most pleasant and interesting time.
In connection with this, the Board wishes to remind the branches that delegates for the convention are to be elected at meetings in the months of January or February,
1964,	according to the S.W.U. By-laws, section 15 to 22. Further, the Union will pay round trip train fare for each delegate as per S. W. U. regulations. Per diem for delegates is to be paid by the branches.
Branches should consider the matter of election of delegates very seriously and send delegates who will truly represent the wishes of the branch and be a credit to the organization. They should represent the branch in the best possible way and to qualify, should have attend-
ed 5 meetings in the year 1963; also, they should be active participants in branch activities. Officers are urged to read By-laws pertaining to election of delegates prior to the election.
Scholarship and Benefit Fund Committee Chairman, Marie Prisland reported the total balance carried by the Benefit Fund is so low, it should be combined with the Scholarship Fund monies. There has been no income in the former fund for a number of years. The Board approved. Mrs. Prisland further reported that three scholarships were awarded this year, because there was such a great interest shown by young students and because of special donations given to the Scholarship Fund. The Board also approved this action in the awarding of students’ grants to: Joan Mahaffey, Br. 28, Calumet, Mich.; Joseph Skorjanec, Br. 31, Gilbert, Minn., and Roseanne Savol, Br. 20, Joliet, 111. The Board heartily discussed the importance of the Scholarship awards and described the interest given them by young students.
From the Scholarship Fund, the Directors approved a refund of $138.40 to be made to Supreme Secretary to reimburse her for the theft of scholarship funds she had collected from hand-work exhibition at the 1952 Convention and which she had paid back to the fund from her own money. The Directors felt she is justly entitled to the refund.
Report on Investments in the last period of six months include profit from the sale of Boston Fund shares In the amount of $525.46. The Directors were happy to hear this and asked the Secretary of the Finance Committee, Mrs. Prisland, to hold off the sale of Mutual Bonds, at her suggestion, at least until the end of the year, then deal with them in the best interest of the Union. Further investigation will be made at the discretion of the Finance Committee.
The Board adjourned for lunch at 12:30 p. m., re-convening again one hour later.
From time to time, a point or two on the subject of Zarja was interspersed with the discussion on other matters; however, the main discussion on Zarja opened Tuesday afternoon. The editor of Zarja was commended with all officers agreeing that the contents of Zarja are very interesting and worthwhile. They complimented Mrs. Prisland on her homemaking column, Pots, Pans and Pastimes, and added that the majority of members enjoy this reading material very much. Mrs. Prisland suggested that after the first of the year, the column will be taken over by her daughter, Mrs. Hermine Dicke of Madison, Wisconsin who, as the wife of Prof. Robert Dlcke of the University of Wisconsin, with a large family herself and active in women’s circles, is thoroughly suited to writing on the subject. The Board expressed their happiness that Mrs. Dicke has taken this interest in Zveza and feel that it is important to have young women participating in the work begun by their mothers and grandmothers. Mrs. Dicke will then follow in her mother’s footsteps in writing the column much the same as the editor, Corinne Leskovar has followed in her mother’s footsteps in editing Zar. ja.
In order to facilitate better mailing of Zarja, which is the prime concern of the editor once the printing is finished each month, the Board approved her suggestion that local secretaries be asked to comply with the convention recommendation of 1961, stating that each secretary must send in a list of members and their current address once a year. Only a few have done this, and it is the only systematic way to complete check can be made. In the Cleveland area, the local officers will be asked to correct the existing mailing list under supervision by Mrs. Turek and Mrs. Faletič. It is hoped that in this way, a concise and current mailing list of members will be made. The editor wishes to have this accomplished by the first of the year.

Pol-letna seja Odbora Direktoric S. Ž. Zveze se je pričela v pondeljek, 26. avgusta, 1963 ob 9:30 dop. v Glavnem uradu v Chicagu. Naslednje odbornice so bile navzoče: preds., Antonia Turek; ustanoviteljica, Marie Prisland; tajnica, Albina Novak; blagajničarka, Josephine Železnikar in nadzornice: Ann Podgoršek, Victoria Faletič, Prances Gaspich in urednica Corinne Leskovar.
Prva točka dnevnega reda je bila pregled poslovnih knjig. Po pregledu so vse direktorice obiskale Metropolitan banko, kjer so overovile in pregledale vrednostne papirje, ki so shranjeni v varnostnem predalu. Vsi dokumenti so bili v poročilu tajnice. Direktorice izrazijo svoje odobravanje, ker so vsi dokumenti in računi najdeni v najlepšem redu. Direktorice nato nadaljujejo sejo v gl. uradu s či-tanjem poročil, ki so bila sprejeta, kakor čitana.
POROČILO GLAVNE PREDSEDNICE
Pozdravljene, odbornice in dobrodošle na naši polletni seji tega leta. Zelo me veseli, do sta se naša Ustanoviteljica, Marie Prisland in glavna tajnica, Albina Novak, srečno in zdrave vrnile s potovanja po Evropi.
Naša kuponska kampanja za nove članice je bila u-spešna. Vesela sem poročila, da je bilo vpisanih 339 novih članic s pomočjo 114 članic in ob sodelovanju 47 podružnic. Zmagovalka v tej kampanji je naša VICKIE FALETIČ, od podr. št. 25, ki je pridobila 42 članic. Sledila ji je ANN GYURCIK od podr. št. 101, Bedford, Ohio z 18 novimi članicami. Tretja v tekmi je bila ROSE
Kraemer od podr. št. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. s 14 novimi; in četrta Theresa Komat od št. 50, Cleveland z 12 novimi članicami.
Podr. št. 25, Cleveland je na prvem mestu z 42 novimi članicami! Podr. št. 50, Cleveland sledi z 39 novimi članicami! Izredno me veseli in srečna sem, da je moja podr. št. 50 vedno tako 100% solidarna z menoj v podpori napredka Zveze in tako so se izkazale tudi sedaj! Želim izreči svojo prisrčno zahvalo vsem in vsaiki posebej, ki so delale v tej kampanji in pomagale do lepega uspeha.
Poročila o raznih državnih konvencijah so bila dobro sprejeta. Skupine so se sestale v Milwaukee, Wis., Clevelandu, O., Fontana, Cal., in Canon City, Colo. Odbornice poročajo, da so vse drž. konvencije bile lepo o-biskane in kazale mnogo navdušenja za delo Zveze. Taki sestanki so zelo važni in bi se morali vršiti vsako leto. So vzgojnega pomena in prinašajo duha dobre volje in mersebojnega sodelovanja raznih podružnic v različnih predelih, da se članice tudi osebno bolje spoznajo in seznanijo z delom vsake države. Nisem se mogla letos udeležiti drž. konv. v Clevelandu zaradi smrti v družini, zato želim izreči prisrčno zahvalo taj. Albini Novak, ki me je zastopala. Vsem državnim predsednicami veliko, iskreno zahvalo za vaše odlično delo.
Naša športno udejstvovanje je tudi bilo prav aktivno zadnje leto, kar nam je pomagalo pri pridobitvi novih članic. Oba, vzhodna in srednje-zapadna kegljaška tekma sta bile uspešni. V Clevelandu se je 24. marca zbra-
under the auspices of the Union. Mrs. Prisland, who guided a tour through Paris and Lourdes, France, Rome Italy, and into Slovenia, began the trip on June 13th. This was the Pilgrimage Tour and was joined by over 70 passengers. Mrs. Frances Seitz of Cleveland, Ohio, was another leader of this tour. The second group left the U. S. also by jet plane on June 20th directly to Ljubljana, Slovenia, headed by Albina Novak with again, over 70 passengers. Both trips were highly successful. A number of members also traveled to Europe via luxury liner, this bringing the total number of S. W. U. passengers to 170. The Board approved the planning of similar trips for 1964, under the same qualifications and with the reduced rate, if available. They expressed their gratitude to August Kollander Travel Bureau for all courtesies given.
Stipulated must be the following qualifications for future travelers under the auspices of S. W. U.
Only members and their families are entitled to the reduced fare. Membership in the S. W. U. must be of good-standing as of Nov. 1, 1963, in order to qualify for the trips in June, 1.964. This ruling will be very strictly held.
While in Europe, Mrs. Prisland and Mrs. Novak were approached by the Academy of Arts and Science of the University of Ljubljana, the highest academic authority in Slovenia, which is assembling material for a historical compilation on Slovenian Women’s Union to add to this collection. Also, the University of Minnesota is doing a similar study and wishes a historical sketch from our organization. The Board agreed that these are both worthwhile projects and should be accepted. Mrs. Prisland was requested to write a history of the S. W. U. for these two libraries as well as for our own record. They feel she is best qualified for this and as the Founder, will have information from personal knowledge. The study will also be available for any future publication on this subject or to add to the history of Slovenian fraternalism in A-merica. The editor was also requested to supply photographic engravings to be added to the written work.
Junior activities, primarily in the Cleveland area, where there is an agressive group of leaders for this work, was discussed by the Board. The Cleveland officers reported on the resumption of bowling and drilling in the fall season. These two activities are held under the capable supervision of Mrs. Pauline Vegel (Br. 25) for bowling league and Mrs. Ernestine Jevec (Br. 50- with the drill teams. The Board, recognizing the great amount of effort and time needed for this activity, commend the leaders and the branches involved in the Cleveland area with fervent wishes that it continue and flourish.
The most exciting project of the current year is the new S. W. U. cookbook, Woman’s Glory — the Kitchen, which is being printed in a revised form. The book will contain a new section edited by Marie Prisland, containing new recipes, menus, historical sketch on Christmas in Slovenia, besides the tried and and true Slovenian dishes and pastries contained in the previous edition edited by Ablina Novak. The book will be well-publicized in Zarja and among the branches for quick selling. Upon completion of the printing, the President, Mrs. Turek will undertake the distribution of the books from her Cleveland home. Branches will be asked to accumulate their orders to facilitate easier mailing and handling and send them in groups of five or more books. Cleveland branches will be able to organize several distribution points. Although the book will carry the same name, it will be different enough to appeal to those who have a copy of the first book in their homes. This project will raise funds for the general treasury of the organization. The Board outlined the expenses as well as income expected from sales.
The meeting was adjourned at 6 p. m„ whereupon the President extended wishes to all the officers for safe journeys home, especially to Ann Podgoršek, who was to leave on a trip to California with her husband the follow-day. Prayer concluded the meeting.

lo 22 krajevnih skupin in en teden pozneje so kegjači-ce iz držav 111., Wis. imele 28 skupin v La Salle, 111.
Mladinska kegljaška liga je igrala vso sezono v Clevelandu in bila zaltjučena z uspešno tekmo v aprilu. Mrs. Pauline Vegal je voditeljica in tajnica lige.
V Clevelandu je še vedno zelo delaven "drill teams” in “baton twirler” in se vadijo vsako soboto pod vodstvom Ernestine Jevec. Ti dve mladinski voditeljici zaslužita našo prisrčno zahvalo za njun trud in žrtve pri mladinskem delovanju v Clevelandu.
Izguba naše gl. direktorice mladinskih aktivnosti Christine Menart, je velik udarec za našo organizacijo. Christine je bila izredno delavna kot direktorica mladinske aktivnosti in bo zelo pogrešana ne samo pri njeni podr. ampak pri nas vseh. Naj njena duša počiva v miru božjem!
Zvezin dan v Lemontu, dne 21. jul. je združil lepa zastopstva članic iz Chicaga in bližnjih mest ter poseben bus iz članic Milwaukee-West Allis in Indianapolis, Ind. Upala sem, da bomo imele en bus tudi iz Clevelenda, toda se to leto mi ni posrečilo dobiti dovolj potnic, zaradi drugih izletov. Prepričana sem, da nam bo prihodnje leto uspelo.
2?. jun. sem obiskala podr. št. 28, Calumet, Mich. Bilo je izredno prijetno srečati naše odlične članice in s ponosom morem reči, da je članstvo št. 28 sestavljeno iz odličnih, energičnih in veselih članic.
Naša Zveza je bila to poletje lepo zastopana v Sloveniji z 140 članicami, ki so obiskale rodno domovino. Zelo sem bila vesela, da nam je uspelo organizirati dve skupini izletnikov, ki sta morda bile dve največji grupi v Sloveniji to poletje. Bila je ne samo dobra reklama za našo Zvezo, ampak tudi velika usluga našemu članstvu, ker so imele priliko uporabiti znižano ceno vožnje.
Clevelandske podružnice bodo imele bazar in razstavo v nedeljo dne 13. oktobra. To bo zelo živahen dan, ker se bo vršila tudi predstava pečenja ter modna revija, vse v rokah naših članic, kakor tudi predstava naših mladinskih članov in članic. Vsaka podružnica bo imela stojalo, kjer bo prodajala ročne izdelke svojih članic. Vsem so-udeleženkam želim mnogo sreče!
Odkar je bilo oznanjo, da bomo izdale novo izdajo kuharske knjige, sem dobila že mnogo naročil. Novo predelana kuharska knjiga bo v krakem v prodaji. Skušale smo jo napuraviti kar najbolj zanimivo in privabji-čo; tako, da bodo tudi članice, ki imajo prvo izdajo, želele imeti novo kopijo. Naročila prihajajo od vsepovsod — upamo, da jo bomo pričele razpošiljati čim-prej ko mogoče. Tajnice bodo imele priliko jih naročiti v večjem številu za razprodajo v krjavnem okolišu. Priporočam, da bi na vaši bodoči seji vprašale članice koliko jih želijo imeti, tako, da bo odbornica, ki bo imela to na skrbi, lahko poslala direktno naročilo. To nam bo prihranilo mnogo na poštnini in zavijanju.
Vršila sem svojo nalogo po svojih najboljših močeh in želim, da bi nastopna sezona, bila kar najbolj uspešna. Želim vam prijetno in srečno potovanje na vaše domove.

V prvih šestih mesecih tega leta smo naložile $5,000 v slovensko hranilnico Slovenian Savings and Loan Ass’n., Canonisburg-Strabane, Pa. po 4% obrestih.
Kupile smo Ameriške Zakladne bonde po 4% obresti v znesku $10,000, ki dozorijo v Avgustu. 1970.

Prodale smo delnice Roston Mutual Bond za ceno $10.-019.46. Kupna cena je bila $9,494.00. Dobiček prodaje bil $525.46. Skupna vsota obresti prejetih od teh delnic je znesla $1.270.40. Torej je skupni dohodek bil $1,795.86.
Ta mesec dozorijo Ameriški Zakladni bondi v vrednosti $23,000 kar bo zopet investirano.

Dobrodelni sklad je zelo nizek, kakor je bil že precej časa, zaradi tega predlagam, da se združi s Šolninskim skladom.
Gotovo želimo izreči iskreno zahvalo gl. odbornicam, prijateljem in podružnicam, ki so darežljivo naklonili darove v šolninski sklad. Mrs. Pacha, drž. preds. za Colorado daruje svojo plačo vsako" leto, Mrs. Rose Scoff, drž. preds. za Calirnijo pise:
“Ko sem videla smehljajoče in srečne obraze dobitel-jev našis šolnin na naslovni strani Zarje, sem se takoj odločila, da darujem svojo plačo v ta namen. Zveza vrši važno nalogo, da pomaga mladini pri njihovi vzgoji-”
Tri šolnine so bile izglasovane in podeljene od Šol-ninskega odbora za leto 1963-64. Imena ter slike zmagovalcev so bile	objavljene	v	julijski Zarji,	skupno z
mojim poročilom.	Študenje	so	zelo hvaležni	za pomoč
pri njihovih študijah.
Kuharsko knjiga. Na vaše priporočilo sem prevzela urejevanje nove	predelane	Zvezina kuharske knjige.
Avgusta sem v Zarji objavila slovensko vsebino te knjige. Po svojih najbolših močeh sem skrbno delala na tej knjigi in upam, da jo boste odobrile.
Podr. v Sheboyganu je predstavila zelo uspešni materinski dan. Na	programu	je	sodelovalo 22	mladinski
članov. Program je bil tako barvit, da je takoj navdušilo 6 novih mladinskih članov, da so pristopili k organizaciji.
Drž. konkonvencija v Milwaukee je bila zelo uspešna. Bile smo vesele, da smo imele našo drago urednico Co-rinne Leskovar, kot govornico. Članice jo imajo rade, kakor tudi njeno družino, ki jo je spemljana.
V	juniju sem prevzela odgovornost, da sem bila so-voditeljica skupine 69 Zvezinih potnic v Evropo s šti-
rim ogledi na poti. ISilo je užitkov polno potovanje. Vse članice in njihovi spremljavah, so bili odlični potniki. V Sloveniji smo bili prisrčno sprejeti od naših sorodnikov, za kar smo vsem hvaležne.
Po vrnitvi iz Evrope, me je čakalo pismo prof. Timothy Smith iz Minnesotske univerze glede zbiranja zgo-divinskega gradiva o zgodovini slovenskih naseljencev v Ameriki. Ko smo bile v Sloveniji so nas povabili predstavniki ljubljanske univerze in Alcedemije znanosti in umetnosti v istem vprašanju. Želim predlagati tej seji, da sprejmemo ta vabila in ukrenemo vse potrebno.

POROČILO GLAVNE TAJNICE
Pozdrave in iskrene želje, da bo ta seja kronana z uspehom.
Najprej želim omeniti Člansko kampanjo gl. predsednice, ki se je zaključila 30. jun. 1963. Resultati so bili objavljeni v Zarji. Skupno je bilo 339 novih članic vpisanih v teku kampanje. Želim izreči globoko zahvalo vsem in vsaki odbornici in članici, ki so pomanale dvigniti članstvo podružnice in celotne Zveze.
Od jan. 4 ’03 do 30. jun. ’63 smo zaradi smrti izgubile 100 članic. Skupna vsota $10,500,00 je bila izplačana dedičem. Finančni napredek ni dosegal točke, kakor je to bilo v zadnih letih. Moramo pričakovati da bodo izdatki naraščali, ker narašča število smrtnih izplačil. Dalje tudi naraščajoča draginja viša stroške organizacije. Mrs. Prisland bo poročala o investicijah.
Prispevek 25c od članic je obupno potreben. Želela bi, da bi mogla poročati, da so vse podružnice izpolnile svojo dolžnost in sodelovale v pogledu, toda žal temu ni tako. Imamo podružnice, ki doslej še niso izpolnile svojo obveznost; to je, da niso izpolnile sklepa Gl. odbora, ki je bil storjen za vsako in vse članice. Če se sklepi odbora direktoric ne izvršijo, potem bi pomenile te seje tratnje časa in denarja. Resno upam, da bo nastali položaj popravljen pred koncem leta in da bo vsaka članic prispevala 25<} v stroškovni sklad.
19. maja sem se udeležila proslave 25 letnice podr. št.
15	v Clevelandu in ohijske drž. konvencije, ki se je vršila istega dne. Tudi sem obiskala članice podr. št. 89 v Oglesby, 111., ki so 13. maja slavile 25 letnico ustanovitve podr. Gotovo je najlepši občutek srečati naše članice in prijatelje in skleniti mnoga nova poznanstva. To je najboljši način dvigniti zanimanje med članr.tvom and opogumiti delo za naše cilje in načrte.
Izlet v Slovenijo to poletje, je uživalo nad 200 naših članic. Dve večji skupini sta potovali z jet letalom, čeprav jih je precej izbralo pot s parnikom. Romanje v Lurd so vodile Mrs. Prisland in Mrs. Sietz. Moja skupina je potovala direktno v Slovenijo. Kollandrova potovalna agencija iz Clevelanda zasluži pohvalo za vzorno ureditev potovanja v vseh ozirih. Znižana cena potovanja je bila izredna pridobitev za naše članice in mnoge so izrazile upanje, da bo v 1964 letu zopet možno napraviti izlet po zniženi ceni.
Mrs. Elizabeth Zefran je organizirala potovanje k kanadskim romarskim potem. Večje število članic je u-porabilo to priliko, da so obiskale lepe, doslej nepoznane kraje. Za “mnoga naše starješe članice je bila prilika, obiskati kraje brez skrbi, ker so organizatorke vse uredile.
Podr, št. 2 je trdo delala za zelo uspešni Zvezin dan in romanje v Lemontu, ki se vrši vsako leto tretjo nedeljo v juliju. Mrs. Josephine Železnikar in Corinne Leskovar skupno s članicami podr. št. 2 so napravile vse priprave in zaslužijo našo pohvalo za dobro izvedeno organizacijo. Drž. konvencija, se je vršila včeraj, 25. avg. je bila še ena uspešna prireditev ob sodelovanju mnogih podružnic. S svojo udeležbo so pokazale, da se zanimajo za organizacijo in njen napredek.
Nova izdaja kuharske knjige, bi morala biti v prodaji v nekaj mesecih. Doprinos Mrs. Prisland k tej slavni knjigi, je kakor šopek cvetlic našim gospodinjam, ki
bo prinesel veselje in zadovoljstvo vsem, ki jo bodo u-porabljale.
Prosim, da sprejmete mojo globoke zahvalo vsem in vsaki posebej za izkazano sodelovanje in upam, da bo dobri Bog še nadalje pošiljal svoje blagoslove našemu delovanju in sklepom.

Zopet smo se zbrale na naši redni polletni seji, ki je še posebnega pomena zaradi bližajoče se narodne konvencije prihodnje leto. Upam, da bo seja koristna za organizacije. Veseli me, da so naše potnice srečne in zdrave vrnile iz raznih potovanj, spočite in pripravljene poprijeti zopet za delo.

Letošnji lemontsld Zvezin dan je zelo lepo uspel. Pomagalo je krasno vreme .odlična udeležba in veselo razpoloženje tega sijajnega dneva. Prisrčna zahvala vsem, ki so pridno pomagali pri delu in vsem bližnjim in dal-jnjim gostom. Z najbolšimi željami.

POROČILO PREDSEDNICE NADZORNEGA ODBORA
Prisrčno pozdravljam vse naše direktorice zbrane tukaj na naši polletni seji.
Zaradi	bližajoče se konvencije,	bomo imele mnogo
važnih razmotrivanj.
Želim,	da bi	naše zasedanje	rodilo obilne sadove ne
samo za	večje	članstvo .ampak	da	bi tudi prineslo na-
šim članicam mnogo zadovoljstva, da bi vedno bile ponosne, da pripadajo naši sijajni organizaciji.
Nadzornice, smo natančno pregledale vse knjige: tajnice, blagajničarke, predsednice šolninskega odbora in urednice	Zarje	ter našle vse v	odličnem redu. Tudi
smo pregledale vrednostne papirje v varnostnem predalu Metropolitan banke in tam tudi smo našle vse v redu.
Prepričana sem, da morem resnicoljubno govoriti za vsako našo članico in tudi za naše može in družine naših članic, ki čitajo ZARJO, kako zelo je naša mala revija priljubljena pri vseh. Čestitke naši urednici. Stalne kolone vključno Pots and Pans, je redno čtivo naših članic. Dekleta posebno rade čitajo nove kuhinjske recepte. Nadalje, poročila raznih podružnic so zelo zanimiva. Želela bi, da bi vse podružnice vsaj od časa do časa poročale o svojih delavnostih, da bomo vedele, da ne počivajo. Sicer vemo, da ne držijo rok križem, ker odbornice so vedno na delu in se prizadevajo za napredek.
V	teku zadnje kampanje glavne predsednice, je naša podružnica dobila 17 odraslih novih članic in 7 mladinskih; od teh sem 7 odraslih in eno mladinsko jaz pridobila. Čestitke vsem, ki so delale za ta lep uspeh.
Minnnesotski Zvezin dan se bo vršil dne 8. sept. združen s proslavo 3$ letnice ustanvitve podr. št. 56 v Hibbingu. Čestitke in najboljše želje podr. in vsem članicam! Naša podr. bo imela poseben naročen bus. To bo prvič, da jaz ne bom mogla biti navzoča na Minn. Zvezi-nem dnevu, ker bom tiste dni za dalj časa se nahajala v Californniji. Toda bom z vami s srcem in z duhom.
Smrt naše Direktorice mladinskih aktivnosti, Christine Menart, me je globoko užalostil. Naj njena duša počiva
v miru. Naša organizacija jo bo pogrešala, ker ona je bila vzorna in delavna tajnica. Naše sožalje tudi drž. preds. Rose Scoff iz San Francisca, ki je pred kratkim izgubila soproga, Josepha. Enako poznani Gornickovi družini iz Chisholm izrekamo sožalje ob izgubi Johna Gornicka, priljubljenega trgovca v tem mestu. Užaloščeno družino vključuje našo gl. preds. Antonijo Turek. Naj njihove duše počivajo v sladkem miru.
Toplo dobrodošlico kličemo našima dvema direktoricama, ki sta se vrnile s potovanja v tujini, Mrs. Prisland in Mrs. Novak.
Naj Bog blagoslovi vse naše odločitve.
Ann Podgoršek POROČILO DRUGE GLAVNE NADZORNICE
Tople in prijazne pozdrave vsem glavnim odbornicam.
Pri pregledu knjig, smo vse našle v najbolšem redu. Zaradi dobro vodene dnevne knjige, je pregled olajšan. Želim dodati, da Albina, naša glavna tajnica opravlja svoje delo, nadvse odlično.
Članice podr. št. 25 so se namenile, da predstavijo u-pešno izvedene prireditve. Potrudile smo se za nove i-deje. Izbrale se bomo dne 29. sept. za proslavo 35 letnice ustanovitve podr., ki bo velik dan za št. 25. Izbrani odbor ima v načrtu kratko predstavo, na katero so povabljeni odlični gostje in vrhunec bo kosilo pripravljeno po naši Mrs. Otoničar.
Aktivnosti mladinskega oddelka so se vršile celo sezono. Zahvala velja Mrs. Ernestine Jevec, ki je nadzorovala vezbalno grupo. Naša zahvala gre tudi Pauline Vegel, ki bo v kratkem zopet pričela s kegljaškimi skupinami mladinskega oddelka.
13. oktober bo še eden “Z” dan s proslavo letnega bazarja skupnih podružnic SŽŽ. Je nekaj edinstvenega videti kako članice raznih podružnic pomagajo s trdim delom v namenu, da utrdimo duha sestrstva in delavna članica, ki vedno rada pomaga kjerkoli je potrebno.
Mrs. Stella Koporc, naša podpreds. je sijajna prostovoljka v delu za napredek društva.
Mrs. Josephine Golinski, naša zelo sposobna tajnica, je morda celo preveč darežliva, ki darujie ne samo časa, ampak tudi po-sejnih prigrizkov.
Mrs. Mary Otoničar, čampijonka med članicami, njeno neutrudljivo delo se je izkazalo za plodonosno za podr. 25. Sodec po njenih energijah in predanosti, nam da misliti, da je ona menda še vedno najmlajša v vestnem beleženju zapisnika. Ona je odločna žena z voljo mladenke. Gotovo je, da imamo pri naši podr. občudovanja vredne odbornice.
V	dokaz napredka podr. št. 25, smo pridobile v času kampanje naše gl. predsednioe, Tončke Turek, 42 novih članic. S tem smo počastile našo gl. preds., ki je v resnici prava voditeljica organizacije. Ona ima sposobnosti odlične predstavnice SŽZ, ki potroši mnogo časa v načrtih in delu za še večjo bodočnost vseh podružnic naše Slovenska Ženske Zveze. Na zdravje.
Vicki Faletič POROČILO TRETJE GLAVNE NADZORNICE
Moj iskren pozdrav vsem! Moja želja, da bi vse bile pri dobrem zdravju. Naj bi ta seja bila uspešna v vseh naših razpravah in načrtih.
Pri pregledu knjig, bondov in drugega ,smo vse našle v dobrem redu in čestitamo glavni tajnici, blagajničarki, tajnici finančnega odbora in urednici zaradi njiho-veh popolnih finančnih obračunov.
Naša podr, je slavila 35 letnico ustanovitva dne 23. junija z družinskim piknikom pri letnem domu Mrs. Kunstek v Yorkville in naslednjo nedeljo smo imele skupno sv. mašo za žive in pokojne članice.
Od prvega v letu, smo izgubile 7 članic, ki so šel po svoje večno plačilo. Naj počivajo v miru.
Pet članic naše podr, se je pridružilo čikaski skupini na romanju v Kanado. Osem-dnevno potovanje je bilo polno radostnega razpoloženja, molitev in blagoslovov. Zahvalimo »e Mrs. Zefran in Mrs. Petrovič, ki so organizirale in skrbele za tako imenitno potovanje.

V času 6 mesecev od jan. do junija tega leta, je naše glasilo poleg rednih poročil atkivnih dopisnic naših podružnic, posvečal posebno paznjo trem projektom.
Izleti v Evropo so bili deležni posebne paznje, zaradi izrednega zanimanja slovensko, kakor tudi angleško govorečih članic. Uspeh potovanj priča o važnosti, da Zarja opozorni članice na te možnosti. Na rezultate, moremo biti ponosne.
Članski kampanji gl. presednice, ki se je pričela v oktobru lani, smo posvečali največ paznje. Poleg rednih opozoril ,so tudi poročevalke in gl. odbornice pogosto pisale in vzpodbujale članice k delu. V tem pogledu je Zarja skušala napraviti kampanjo za kar najbolj privlačno.
Naša majska številka je objavila življenjepise 60 Zve-zinih mater, katere so odgovarjajoče podružnice izvolile za svoje “Matere leta”. Vsaki je bila dana enaka odmera z ozirom na gradivo, katero so poslale podružnice. Ta posebna vsebina, je gotovo bila zanimiva za mene kot urednico, kakor je morala biti našim članicam. Večina mater so dolgoletne članice in njihovi življenjepisi so bili najbolj zanimivi in zpodbudljivi.
V teku	zadnjih šest mesecev smo imele	4	izdaje	na
16	straneh in 2 številki na 32 straneh, to je Velikonočna številka v aprilu in materinska v maju. Zaradi nepoznanega faktorja, koliko materiala bom morale izostati, tako je zaradi preobilice dopisov, moral izostati mladinski del v 4 aprilski številki. Kompletni seznam odbornic je bil objavljen v aprilski izdaji.
Zopet želim povdariti, da je priljubljenost Zarje, na katero smo vsi ponosni, v veliki meri zasluga naših rednih dopisnic in poročevalk, ki dajejo listu privlačnost in važnost zaradi pestre vsebine in mnogih novic.
Imela sem tudi mnogo opravka z mnogimi spremembami naslovov. Število spremenjenih naslovov, katere je dobil naš urad v tem mesecu je ogromo. Ljude se v današnjih dneh več selilo, kakor bi si kdo predstvljal. Zato je toliko težje držati točni pregled vseh sprememb, bolj kot kadarkoli poprej. V zadnjih 6 mescih sem osebno skrbela, da so bile izvršene ne samo vse spremembe naslovov, ampak tudi brisanje in dodatki, kar se je izve-šilo takoj po prejemu obvestila od podružnic. Vzame res mnogo ur dela v tiskarni z omenjenimi spemembami, toda skušala bom vse storiti, da se vse spremembe in brisanja posameznih iz seznamskih list, izvrši brez zamude in korektno. Tudi imam več predlogov s tem v zvezi, katere bom predložila seji poznpje	in	želim	va-
ših navodil.
Poleg mojega dela kot urednica sem se udeleževala dela naše podr. št. 2 kolikor le mogoče. Naša podr. ima odlični delavni odbor, ki je pripravil lepo uspelo materinsko proslavo ter redne proslave rojstnih dnevov. Z veseljem sem pomagala pri vseh prireditvah. Enako je naš letošnji Zvezin dan v Lemontu nadvse dobro uspel ob veliki	udeležbi članic in prijateljev. Vsi	so se	po-
hvalno izrazili o organizaciji. Mislim, da je to najboljše v našem prijaznem mestu in želim najboljše uspehe pri vseh vaših odločitvah.
Dne 5. maja sem se udeležila drz konvencije za Wisconsin v	Milwaukee pod pokroviteljstvom	podr. št.	12.
Naj izrečem moje čestitke odboru in državnim uradnicam ter iskreno zahvalo za prijazni sprejem.

Cenjene gl. odbornice Slovenske Ženske Zveze:
Najtoplejše pozdrave vsem! Napredek članske kampanje glavne predsednice je bil izredno lep in upam, da je moj poziv vsemu članstvu pripomogel do ene najbolj uspešnih kampanj v zgodovini Zveze.
Naša gl. preds. Toni Turek, ki je marlljiva delavka, zasluži našo popolno podporo, ne samo v teku kampanje, ampak v vseh kampanjah.
Ce vse delamo dovolj pridno, potem bo naša Zveza stalno rastla in procvitala. Naša podr. je v teku kampanje pridobila 16 novih članic.
Udeležila sem se drž. konvencije v Milwaukee, katere gostiteljica je bila podr. št. 12. Uspeh je bil viden.
Članice in ne-članice nestrpno čakajo na našo novo kuharsko knjigo; gotovo je zanimivo, da so tudi druge, ki nimajo zveze z našo organizacijo, nestrpne, da kupijo knjigo. Morda jih bomo pridobile za članice.
Naša podr. bo 6 okt. slavila 35 letnico ustanovitve s slovesno sv. mašo v cerkvi Marije Pomočnice ob 7:30 zjutraj. Članice bodo pristopile k sv. obhajilu in nato bo zajutrek v dvorani in počastile bomo našo ustanoviteljico, Mrs. Josephine Schlossar fcer ustanovne članice.
Sodelovale smo v kegljaški tekmi s petimi skupinami in West Allis bo gostitelj tekme v letu 1964.
Žal mi je bilo, da se letos nisem mogla, zaradi bolezni v družini, udeležiti Zvezinega dneva v Lemontu.
Ob zaključku, najboljša voščila za najbolj uspešno zborovanje. Naj vam Bog tudi v bodoče nakloni zdravja in blagoslova.	Marie	A. Floryan
POROČILO DRŽAVNE PREDSEDNICE ZA COLORADO, KANSAS IN MISSOURI
Spoštovane gl. uradnice SŽZ:
Zopet je prišel čas, da podamo svoja poročila. Naša državna konvencija, ki se je vršila 30. junija v Canon City, Colo., je bila deležna zaželjenega uspeha. Vse podružnice iz Colo. so se odzvale povabilu in poslale svoja zastopstva na konvencijo. Podr. iz Kansas in Mo. se zaradi velike oddaljenosti niso mogle udeležiti. Na kon-venčni seji, smo večinoma razmotrivale o našem glasilu, Zarji in vse so izrazile željo, da bi se naša Zarja povečala na več strani, ker naš mesečnik je srce naše SŽZ. Pozivamo vas, da bi odobrile naš konvienčni predlog v tem oziru.
Naša prihodnja državna konvencija se bo vršila drugo leto v septembru pri podr. št. 3.
Vse priznanje gre tistim, ki ste povečale število novih članic v pretekli kampanji. Osebno obžalujem, da nisem bila uspešna v tem pogledu, toda smatram, da je vsaki dan v letu takorekoč kampanjski dan, zato skušam, kadar imam priložnost, da pridobim kako novo članico. Veseli me tudi, da Zveza finančno napreduje.
Pohvalim našo urednico Corinne Leskovar za skrbno in lepo izbrane spise v Zarji. Rev. Claude Okornu zahvala za podučne članke in Mrs. Prisland za poduk v prid zdravja. Z veseljem sem čitala poročilo gl. preds. Antonije Turek, da so kuharske knjige v tisku, ker imam lepo naročilo za nje.
Iskreno sožalje izrekam gl. preds. Turek ob smrti brata. Enako družini prerano umrle ses. Christine Menart. Bodi jim blag spomin!
Veselo pozdravljam naše izletnice, ki so se srečne in zdrave vrnile iz obiska rojstne domovine.

POROČILO DRŽAVNE PREDSEDNICE ZA WISCONSIN
Dobrodošle in iskrene pozdrave našim glavnim odbornicam: Res sem srečna, da morem biti z vami z najboljšimi voščili.
V aprilu sem se udeležila keglaške tekme v Jolietu.
Dne 5. maja se je vršila peta drž. konvencija v Milwaukee, ki je bila zelo uspešna prireditev. Sheboygan je bil zopet lepo zastopan s skupino prijaznih članic. Imele so svoj bus. Willard je tudi bil močno zastopan, prijazno skupino članic je vodila Mary Staut. Enako smo imele lepo delegacijo iz West Allis in obeh milwauških podružnic. Moje najvažnejše opozorilo, ki ga povdarjam ob raznih jirilikah je, da pridobimo več novih članic.
V juliju sem se udeležila Zvezinega dneva v Lemontu. bil zopet lepo zastopan s skupino prijaznih članic. Imele udeležba izredno dober vtis. Posebno, ker je v tistem času mnogo članic na počitnicah.
Ob zaključku želim izreči osebno zahvalo vsem, ki so mi pomagali in sodelovali pri delu na razne načine. Naj vas vse Bog blagoslovi.	Rose Kraemer
POROČILO DRŽAVNE PREDSEDNICE ZA OHIO —MICH.
Drage odbornice:
Prejmite, prosim moje prisrčne pozdrave vsem. Bližajoča se narodna konvencija, je brez dvoma vam vsem posebno važna. Želim, da bi vaši razgovori in sklepi bili plodo-nosni za napredek naše organizacije.
Tukaj v Ohio se pripravljamo za letni bazar in modno razstavo, ki se vrši dne 13. oktobra, 1963. Prireditev bo zbrala naše clevelandske podružnice, kakor tudi drugie podr. iz države so napovedale udeležbo. Vršila se bo v dvorani sv. Vida in vse priprave so v rokah pridnih društvenih delavk odbora združenih clevelandskih podružnic.
Upamo, da bo uspeh te prireditve, pomenil večji napredek naše priljubljene SŽZ.

Pozdrave vsem zbranim na polletnem zasedanju.
Delovanje podružnic v državah Pennsylvania in New York, je v dobrih rokah naših pridnih odbornic, katerim želim izreči prisrčno zahvalo. Zopet imamo v načrtu državno konvencijo za 6. oktobra, 1963 ki bo zbrala nas v našem letnem zborovanju. Upamo, da bomo videle tudi naše zveste clevelandske sestre.
To poletje sem preživiela nekaj tednov na počitnicah s svojo družino v Evropi. V pričakovanju veselega snidenja in uspešne seje, dne 6. oktobra, vse najlepše pozdravljam.

POROČILO DRŽAVNE PREDSEDNICE ZA CALIFORNIO, WASHINGTON IN OREGON
Drage odbornice in direktorice:
Najboljša voščila vsem na seji. Mi v San Francisco, pri podr. št. 13, upamo, da bodo naše seje boljše obiskane.
V	načrtu imamo več zanimivih prireditev za preostanek leta.

Predsednica se zahvala vsem odbornicam za njihova poročila, ki kažejo, napredek Zveze.
Odbor direktoric izreče iskrene sožalje gl. odbornicam, ki so izgubilie svoje drage: Rose Scoff ob izgubi soproga, Antonia Turek žaluje za bratom. Posebno so odbornice užaloščene ob smrti gl. odbornice Christine Menart, ki je bila direktorica mladinskih aktivnosti. Odbor pošilja izraze sožalja družine pokojne.
Po čitanju poročil je bila prva točka na dnevnemredu obravnavanje sklepov in predlogov 111. — Ind. drž. konvencije, ki se je vršila prejšnji dan in katere so se udeležile vse gl. odbornice. Soglasno mnenje je bilo, da je konvencija bila dobro pripravljena in obiskana, n« samo od domačih podr., ampak tudi iz sosednjih držav. Po kosilu je bil kratek program na odru Sv. Štefana, ki je prikazal slovensko kulturno delovanje naše mladine, kar je seveda nadvse pohvalno. Odobrijo se razni sklepi izneseni

Sestre, pojdimo vse na delo!
na omenjeni konvenciji, posebno se glede Zarje pohvali se delo podr. št. 2 in odobrijo se načrti za narodno konvencijo, ki bodo v oskrbi krajevnega odbora.
Po popoldanskem kosila se odbornice podajo v hotel Morrison, kjer se bo vršila narodna konvencija, da se z ravnateljstvom pogovorijo o vseh podrobnostih in si ogledajo zborovalne in banketne prostore.
V torek se je seja pričela ob 9:30 zjutraj v glavnem uradu. Tajnica poda podrobno poročilo o izidu zadnje kampanje in prečita imena zmagovalk, na čelu z Vicki Faletič (25), 42 novih članic; Anna Gyurcik (101), 18 novih članic; Rose Kraemer (43), 14 novih članic; Theresa Komat 12 novih članic; Margaret Fischer (1), 10 novih članic; Albina Novak (2), 10 novih članic; Marie Floryan (17), 10 novih članic in Ann Podgoršek (33), 9 novih članic. Vse so pokazale mnogo pravega duha in jim veljajo prisrčne čestitke.
Za nastopne Zvezine dneve, drž. konvencije in obletnice so bile imenovane Josephine Železnikar, gl. blagajničarka za Minn. Zvezin dan; gl. taj., Albina Novak za proslavo podr. št. 25 v Clevelandu in gl. preds. A. Turek bo šla na drž. konv. v Penna. Ustanoviteljica Mrs. Prisland se bo udeležila bazarja v Clevelandu 13. okt. — Preds. se opraviči, da se to leto ni mogla udeležiti drž. konv. v Colo., toda upa, da bo prihodnje leto jih obiskala. Vse krajevne gl. odbornice se vabijo, da se redno udeležijo lokalnih prireditev.
Gl. blag. in preds. podr. št. Josephine Železnikar povabi vse gl. odbornice da se udeležijo Lemontskega Zvezinega dneva prihodnje leto, ki bo obenem 25 letnica teh romanj.
Zaradi smrti Christine Menart, se bo izpraznjeno mesto direktorice mladinskih aktivnosti, izpolnilo na prihodnji konvenciji.
Razprava o pred-konvenčni kampanji se bila obširna. Pričela se bo 1. okt. 63 in zaključila tik pred narodno konvencijo 31. marca 64. Denarne nagrade bodo 50^ za novo članico razreda A; $1 za novo članico razreda B in 25tf za mladinski oddelek. Poleg tega bo zmagovalka kronana kot “Kraljica Konvencije” in druga kot “Princess konvencije". Kraljica bo imela prosto vožnjo na obe strani v konvenčno mesto Chicago. — Ta kampanja bo zelo važna in se pričakuje mnogo odziva.
13. narodna konvencija bo poleg rednih zasedanj v hotelu Morrison v Chicagu, imela tudi druge zanimivosti in programe.
V soboto, 16. maja bo romanje v Lemont k Mariji Pomagaj z večerno procesijo z lučkami in prenočiščem.
V nedeljo, 17. maja bo uradna otvoritev s slovesno sv. mašo v cerkvi Sv. Stefana, nakar bo kosilo in predstava v dvorani.
V pondeljek, torek in sredo, 18, 19 in 20. maja, 1964 bodo zborovanja v hotelu ob 9:30 zjutraj. Glavni konvenčni banket bo v torek zvečer v ambasadorjevi dvorani hotela, združen s kromanjem kraljice in programom za delegate in prijatelje. — Čikaslca podr. se bo potrudila, da bo to največja konvencija, in ostala vsem v najlepšem spominu.
Direktorice tudi opozarjajo na pravila glede volitev de-legatinj, ki se mora izvršiti na sejah v jan. ali febr. Zve-
za bo plačala vožnjo. Podružnice plačajo delegatinjam dnevnice.
Sklene se, da se dobrodelni sklad, ki je zelo nizek združi s šolninskim. Odobrijo se predlogi glede šolnin, katere je predložila Mrs. Prisland. Odobri se tudi povrnitev gl. taj. znesek $138.40, ki je bil pred časom vkraden, pa se takrat zadeva ni uredila.
Direktorice tudi odobrijo investicije predložene po Mrs. Prisland.
Na popoldanski seji se je ponovno razpravljajo o Zarji. Izrečena je splošna pohvala o urejevanju lista ter o stalnih kolonah in dopisih. Pohvali se predlog Mrs. Prisland, da bo njena hčerka Mrs. Hermine Dicke nadaljevala gospodinjsko kolono, katere članice zelo rade čitajo.
V	namenu, da se izboljša pošiljanje lista, ki je največji problem potem ko je tiskan in da se seznam članic redno pregleda in odpravijo vse pogreške, urednica predlaga, da naj se iznese na sklep zadnje konvenciji da vse tajnice vsako leto pošljejo urednici celotne popravljene sezname članic. Doslej samo nekatere to storijo. Za Cleveland sta prevzele Mrs. Turek in Mrs. Faletič, da bodo pregledale in popravile sezname.
Gl. odbornice poročajo o uspešnem izletu Zveze v Evropo in pohvalijo Kolandrovo potniško agencijo za sodelovanje. Sklene se, da morajo vse potnice, ki bodo upravičene do znižane vožnje v Evropo prihodnje poletje 15 in 22 junija 1964 — biti članice Zveze v dobrem stanju vsaj z dne 1. novembra 1963. To pravilo se bo strogo izvajalo.
Ko so bile v Evropi to poletje, sta Mrs. Prisland in Mrs. Novak bile povabljene k sodelovanju zbiranja gradiva slov. izseljencev v Ameriki. Delo ima v rokah ljubljanska univerza in Znanstvena Akademija. Ista prošnja je prišla iz minnesotske univerze. Priporoča se sodelovanje in Mrs. Prisland se naprosi, da napiše zgodovino Zveze za te študije. Urednica se pooblašča, da nudi na razpolago klišeje k spisom .
Posebna pohvala se izreče mladinskim aktivnostim v Clevelandu ter se priporoča, da njihovo delo v vežbalnih krožkih in kegljanju se ne samo nadaljuje, ampak tudi raste in najde posnemanje tudi v drugih mestih.
Nova izdaja kuharske knjige “Woman’s Glory — the Kitchen” že sedaj vzbuja pričakovanje in navzdušenje med članicami: Bo res nekaj posebnega v predelani obliki. Mrs. Prisland bo dodala nov del receptov slovenskih Jedil, kakor tudi spis o Božiču v Sloveniji, poleg tega bodo prevzeti prejšnji recepti urejeni od Mrs. Novak. Mr. Turek bo imela na skrbi razprodajo knjige, ki upamo, da bo šla hitro v promet, čeprav bo knjiga imela isto ime, bo vendar v toliko različna od prejšnje, da jo bodo hotele kupiti tudi tiste, ki imajo prvo Izdajo.
Seja je bila zaključena ob 6 uri s posebnimi voščili predsednice vsem za srečno vrnite na domove, posebno se srečno potovanje Ann Podgoršek, ki se je s soprogom naslednjega dne odpeljala v Californio. Seja je bila zaključena z molitvijo.

Duhovne misli
Rožni venec, družinska molitev
Opazovalci vsakdanjega življenga vsi brez razlike tožijo nad pomanjkljivim družinskim življenju. Družinske vezi so razrahljane. Ni pravega reda ne pravega spoštovanja. Starši niso več namestniki božji, ampak le starejši člani družine, ki prav ne razumejo potrebe časa. Njihove odredbe so predmet raspravljan-ja med otroci ali celo preziranja. Kjer pa ni več spoštovanja do postav tam tudi ni spoštovanja do Boga. Dom, ki bi moral biti varno zavetje za vse družinske člane in svetišče čednostnega življenja, postaja vir mnogega zla in moralnega propadanja.
Že dolgo so se vzgojitelji mladine in voditelji narodne blaginje prizadevali najti sredstvo obdržati družino skupaj in ji dati zopet blesk starega in lepega skupnega živlenja. Ko je prišla televizija, se je marsikdo oddahnil in rekel: “To je pa sredstvo, ki bo pomagalo obdržati družino skupaj.” Vendar je to premalo. To je le zunanja vez. Notranja vez manjka. To vez pa nam lahko prinese le molitev in to družinska molitev. Najboljša družinska molitev je pa rožni venec. Družina, ki moli skupaj, ostane skupaj.
Seveda se nam zdi ta molitev dolgočasna, predolga. Za dosego božjega kraljestva, se je treba žrtvovati. Veliko sredstvo v dosego tega namena je molitev. Še večji vpliv! pa ima skupna družinska molitev. Gospod pravi:	“Kjer	sta	dva	sli	trije	zbrani v mojem imenu
sem jaz sredi med njimi.” Ko molimo rožni venec, je Jezus sredi med nami. Ta zavest nam bo olajšala, da nam bo molitev rožnega venca sladka dolžnost družine.
Ko je Mati Božja izbrala sv. Benedikta, da razširja pobožnost rožnega venca, je naročila: “Vpelji rožni venec povsod. Poučuj ljudi o rožnem vencu in jim povej, da je ta molitev tako meni kakor tudi mojemu sinu najbolj všeč. Rožni venec bo vir neizčrpnega blagoslova za vsakega.”
V	Fatimi je Marija na Lucijino vprašanje, kdo da je, odgovorila: “Sem gospa presvetega rožnega venca. Prišla sem svariti vernike, naj poboljšajo svoje življenje in naj prosijo odpuščanja za svoje grehe. Nehajo naj žaliti našega Gospoda, ker je že tako preveč žaljen. Moliti morajo rožni venec.”
Davno so že bili časi, ko si iz vsakega krščanskega doma slišal molitev rožnega venca. To navado je treba zopet poživiti, da bo dom dihal tisto domačnost, ki jo daje samo zasidranost v Boga po molitvi, ge danes najdemo stare može in žene, ki jim je rožni venec sestavni del dnevnega reda kakor kosila ali večerja. V nekaterih družinah so ga že zopet uvedli kot skupno molitev pa jih to ni prav nič motilo pri njihovi zaposlenosti. Ravno nasprotno. Neka gospa pripoveduje, da je ob času, ko so molili rožni venec, prišel raznašalec časopisov, ki je bil protestant. Napravil je velike oči, ko je videl vso družino na kolenih. Poln spoštovanja je dejal: “Oprostite, nisem vedel, da je vaš mož minister (protestantovki duhovnik.) Drugič bom prišel preje, da vas ne bom motil pri službi božji.”
Neki moj dober prijatelj, mi je rekel: “To, kar je vam duhovnikom vaš brevir, to je meni rožni venec. Nikoli ga ne opustim, ker vem, da prinaša meni in moji družini velik blagoslov.”
Kaj, če bi še mi posnemali ta zgled.

Št. 10, Cleveland, Ohio. — Poletje in počitnice so za nami. Otroci so zopet v šolah, jesen je tukaj. Vse gre s tako naglico naprej, da je kar neverjetno, toda zima bo kot po navadi dolga. Zima se nas rada drži kot smola. Upam pa, da le ne bo takšna kot je bila lanska, ker za nas stare ljudi je neprijetno. Seveda narava nas nič ne vpraša, in gre svojo pot naprej.
V	teh par mesecih ko nismo imele sestankov, so preminule naslednje članice: Rose Turk, Frances Novak, in Angela Fink, Bog jim daj večni mir in pokoj. Preostalim družinam pa naše iskreno sožalje.
Vsem bolnim sestram želim ljubega zdravja, ki je največje bogastvo na svetu.
Poročam, da sem se vrnila iz bolnišnice, kjer sem prestala operacijo na nogah. Ob tej priliki se iskreno zahvalim dragim prijateljicam za obiske v bolnici, za voščilne kar-
tice, cvetlice, darila in za molitve za zdravje. Posebno pa se želim zahvaliti mojim dragim sosedom Mr. Antonu Novak, soprogu naše članice Millie, ki je ves čas moje odsotnosti skrbel za red in snago o-koli naše hiše, ker midva z možem sva bila oba v bolnici. Moj mož je še vedno tam. V nesreči človek najbolje spozna svoje prijatelje. Še enkrat vsem dobrotnikom, ki so nama pomagali na katerikoli način, prav prisrčna hvala. Nikdar ne bom pozabila vaše naklonjenosti. Naj vam ljubi Bog poplača v obilni meri.
Sedaj ko bodo bolj, dolgi večeri, bi prosila članice, da bi se udeleževale naših sej v bolj velikem številu in da bi pridno prodajale listke za skupni bazar, ki se bo vršil 13. okt.

Kako majhen je svet postal! Ko sem prvikrat potovala v Ameriko, smo bili na potovanju nad dva tedna; pred štirimi leti smo se z letalom vozili dva dni in eno noč, letos smo pa v ENEM dnevu prispeli iz Ljubljane — v Sheboygan. Za prihodnje leto nam obetajo, da dospe jugoslovansko letalo naravnost v Ameriko, naloži potnike ter jih odpelje direktno v Lljubljano, kar bo čas potovanja še bolj skrajšalo.
Zanimivi sestanki. — Kmalu po prihodu v Ljubljano sva z gl. tajnico Albino Novak bili povabljeni na sestanek vršeč se v uradu Slovenske Izseljenske Matice. Poleg uradnikov Matice so bili navzoči zastopniki Akademije znanosti in umetnosti ljubljanske Univerze, ki si je nadela nalogo zbrati gradivo o slovenskih izseljencih v Ameriki. Želijo imeti čim več gradiva o zgodovini naših organizacij, društev, domov .pevskih zborov, šol, cerkva in slovenskih fara.
Konferenci v uradu Matice je sledilo povabilo odbornic organizacija za Družbeno aktivnost žensk Slovenija. V svojem odličnem uradu so nas prijazno sprejele ter nas seznanile z delavnostjo njih organizacije, ki ima jako širok delokrog. Vodi razne tečaje, izdaja mesečnik NAŠA ŽENA, kjer obdelujejo vprašanja tikajoča se gospodinjstva, nege otrok in izobrazbe. Pomenek o delu Rdečega križa je zlasti zanimal našo so-potnico Emilijo Unik, zastopnico te organizacije v Clevelandu. Prijetnemu pogovoru je sledila pogostitev v hotelu Union.
Gospa Ina Slokan, prijazna urednica mesečnika RODNA GRUDA, je nekaj naših potnic spremila v Otroško bolnišnico v Ljubljani. Obiskovalke so se jako pohvalno izrazile o izvrstni oskrbi otrok in moderno urejenemu zavodu. Tej bolnišnici je naša Zveza poslala več koristnih predmetov po vojni.
Ameriški piknik 4. julija. — Ni mi znano komu gre kredit za imenitno idejo, da se na Dan ameriške neodvisnosti 4. julija, priredi piknik in shod vseh v domovini se nahajajočih ameriških izletnikov. Ideja je postala popularna in zdaj se vsako leto vrši piknik na ta dan. Letos je shod bil na jasi poleg gradu Otočec pri Novem mestu. Shoda se je udeležilo kakih 500 ameriških slovenskih izletnikov, med njimi 144 potnic in potnikov, katerim je naša Zveza organizirala potovanje. Ker so z izletniki prišli tudi sorodniki in znanci, je število udeležencev na-rastlo do 1500.
Prvi je navzoče pozdravil predsednik občine Novo mesto, g. Sergej Thorževsky, ki je gostom želel prijetno bivanje in dobro počutje v domovini. Gospa Zima Veršča-jeva je pozdravila v imenu Slovenske Izseljenske Matice, ki je z Dolejnsko turistično zvezo skupno pripravila zelo prijeten in kulturen program za ta shod. Sledili so pozdravi izletnikov, nakar so v narodnih plesih nastopile folklorne skupine iz Ljubljane, Bele krajine in Prekmurja ter slavni pevski oktet iz Ljubljane, ki pride to jesen v Ameriko gostovat. Naši rojaki in rojakinje so z velikim zanimanjem sledili programu domačih plesov in pesmi.
Naj se na tem mestu prisrčno zahvalim zavednemu Slovencu, prijatelju Jakobu Cuznarju, bivšemu Ameri-kancu ,sedaj živečemu v svoji rodni vasi Podkoren na Gorejnskem, za na programu poklonjeni mi ljubki šopek rdečih nageljčkov ,povit s slovensko trobojnico in okrašen z ameriško zastavico.
Izlet na Vršič. — Štirikrat sem bila na obisku v domovini in vsakikrat sem želela videti našo krasno in romantično Logarsko dolino ter visoki prelaz Vršič na Gorenjskem. Logarsko dolino, ki je po zatrdilu turistov najlepša alpska dolina v Evropi, sem obiskala vsakikrat nisem pa šla na Vršič, ki je v Sloveniji najlepša gorska točka, dostopna tudi takim “hribolazcem” kot sem jaz.
Vršič mi je v spominu od leta 1938 ,ko je naša Zveza organizirala svoj prvi izlet v domovino. Takrat nas je bilo skupaj 92. Na potovanju po Sloveniji smo prenočevali v Krajnski gori na Gorenjskem. Naše mlade potnice so takoj napravile načrt, da gredo prihodnje jutro na Vršič. In šle so! V družbi je bila naša Albina in moja hčerka Hermina. Na vrh so hodile 4 ure in prišle nazaj seveda zelo utrujene, a brezmejno ponosne, da so šle tako visoko. Za spomin so s seboj prinesle gorskih rož in en kravji zvonček. Dali so jim ga pastirji, ki so v gorah krave pasli.
Željo, da bi rada šla na Vršič, sem zaupala tajniku Slovenske Izseljenske Matice prijaznemu g. Albertu Švagelj, ki je takoj uredil vse potrebno za izlet. Z gl. tajnico Albino Novak in gospo Emilijo Unik, sopotnico smo se vsedle v pripravljen udoben avto. Matica nam je preskrbela zelo simpatičnega in vsem informiranega spremljevalca, ki je kot lovec na gamse in divje peteline v gorah doma. To je bil g. Mitja Vošnjak, književnik, diplomat in bivši jugoslovanski poslanik za Vzhodno Nemčijo.
Prelaz Vršič v Julijskih Alpah je visok 1G61 metrov. Cesta na vrh se vije kot kača. Gospod Vošnjak nas je na potu opozarjal in nam pojasnjeval razne zanimive točke. Znal je visočino vsake serpentine; poznal vsako stezo kod hodijo gamsi; vedel za drevesa, kamor pridejo peti jutraj-nico divji petelini; razlagal nam je zgodovino krajev, ki so vidni z vrh prelaza. Škoda le, da je pričelo deževati, ko smo se vozili na drugo stran proti izviru Soče. Vožnja po Soški dolini je krasna nad vse. Rada bi to pot napravila še enkrat. V Kobaridu smo se poklonili spomeniku velikega slovenskega pesnika Simona Gregorčiča ter od daleč pozdravili njegovo rojstno vasico, kjer “Goriški Slavček” sniva večno spanje.
V	Gorici smo si ogledali italijansko mrežasto mejo ter ugotovili, da je Nova Gorica, ki je vzrastla pod Jugoslav!-
KOČA NA VRŠIČU
jo, mnogo lepša in veliko bolj napreduje kot stara Gorica pod Italijo.
Pozno zvečer smo se vrnili v Ljubljano, zadovoljni in Matici zelo hvaležni, ki nam je omogočila ta prekrasni in zanimiv izlet.
Rogaška Slatina. — Slovenija ima več zdravilišč, med katerimi so toplice v Rogaški Slatini največje in najstarejše. Nahajajo se na Štajerskem, kakih 40 kilometrov vzhodno od Celja. Tu sem vsako leto pride na stotine ljudi, da si z kopeli in mineralno vodo zdravijo želodec, jetra in ledvice.
Za pravega odkritelja Rogaške Slatine velja znani hr-vatski ban grof Peter Zrijnski, ki je bolehal na jetrih. I.e-ta 1GG5 je bil na lovu v teh krajih, pa so mu kmetje priporočili vodo iz tamošnjih vrelcev. Poslušal je njih nasvet in je ozdravel. Od takrat so mnogi znanstveniki napisali izvirna poročila o zdravilni vodi Rogaške Slatine. Lansko leto je primarij dr. R. Leskovar izdal knjigo, kjer med zgodovino opisuje ozdravljenja, ki so se v tem zdravilišču dogodila.
Ko se je v 17tem stoletju razširil glas o vrelcih v Rogaški Slatini, je kmalu nastala zahteva po zdravilni vodi. Ste-
klenica vode že kar pri vrelcih je takrat stala 30 krajcarjev, na Dunaju pa celo goldinar steklenica. Zdaj računajo 120 dinarjev za steklenico, ali 15 centov naše valute. Lansko leto so odtukaj v vse kraje Evrope izvozili 12 milijonov steklenic mineralne vode.
Kmalu po odkritju vrelcev so v Rogaško pričeli prihajati odlični gostje. Avstrijski nadvojvoda Ivan je tu našel ozdravljenje kot je zapisal v knjigo gostov. Istočasno je bil tu na zdravljenju Napoleonov brat Ludwig Bonaparte.
Voda iz treh Rogaških vrelcev vsebuje natrij, kalcij in magnezij. Te rudninske snovi delujejo na pravilno delovanje želodca in prebavil; pri črevesnem katarju in hemoroidih; vplivajo na ledvice; blažijo protin, krče itd.
V	Rogaški Slatini so n«, razpolago vroče, mineralne kopeli, ki so pod zdravniško oskrbo. Navadna kura traja 3 tedne. S sestrično Tončko Lekšetovo iz Celja sva bili tam le en teden, ker mi je bil čas odmerjen. Kopeli so nama jako ugalaje. Zdravilišče ima enajst hotelov a čistimi sobami. Kraj je miren, zelo lep in zrak kot ambrozija.
Že samo to blagodejno vpliva na pomirjenje živcev.

Št. 14, Euclid, Ohio. — Na avgustovi seji smo razpravljale o našem izletu, ki je 25. avgusta lepo uspel. Pri Lapovih smo imele o-kusno kosilo, kakor vsako leto. Sedaj so poletni dnevi za nami in moramo se pripraviti na poživljeno društveno delovanje. Za dne 11. novembra pripravljamo enodnevni bazar. Vse članice prosimo, da se ga gotovo udeležite, da bo čimveč uspeha. — Članice so tudi zelo
pridne, ker so lepo našivale že veliko pojštrov in mnoge druge stvari pridejo prav za napredek društvene blagajne. Sreča vas čaka, da dobite lepe stvari. Pripeljite s seboj tudi svoje družine in prijatelje ter znance.
Naša preds. Mary Okički se je tudi podala na krakte počitnice v Kanado. Mary Iskra in njen mož sta se tudi že vrnila s počitnic na Havajskih otokih. Videla sta mnogo lepih stvari. — Sestre Zajec, Troha in Tillie Špehar so se že vrnile iz obiska domovine Slovenije.
Bolana je bila Ana Marold, toda kakor hitro je ozdravela, je že o-biskala našo sejo in darovala 4 predpasnike. Hvala Ančki in naj ji Bog da ljubo zdravje, ker je res zvesta dobra za društvo. Lepa hvala za denarni prispevek, ses. Kol-jat.
Zopet je več naših sester bolanih. Posebno težko so bolane, Mrs. Somrak (Tracy Ave.) in Mrs. Klun na Gollerju. Dolgo let je priklenjena na posteljo Mrs. Ana Ban v Ženevi in za vsak obisk je zelo hvaležna. Ko smo imele kosilo na Lapovi farmi, so jo nekatere sestre šle obiskati in je sedaj poslala lepo zahvalno pismo. Obiskujmo bolne sestre in prosimo Boga, da jim nakloni ljubo zdravje.
Na septemberski seji smo slavile godovanja članic. Prinesle so dobrote: Mrs. Turk je prinesla 2 keksa, Mrs. Pinculic, pohanje, Tillie Špehar, za suha grla, kar je pred časom prinesla tudi Mrs. Kušar, toda smo žal po pomoti izpustile takrat njeno ime. — V denarju so
darovale sestre: Kavšek, Pičel, Klemenčič, Rupert in Simončič.
Prejmite vse našo najlepšo zahvalo in prosim, da pridete vse v kar največjem številu na seje.
Naj še poročam, da se je sin naše podpredsednice Mary Stražišar, precej ponesrečil, ko je padel z lestve ob priliki barvanja hiše. Zdravje mu že gre na boljše.

Št. 20, Joliet, Illinois. — Naše iskrene čestitke Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Jagodnik ob njuni 50 letnici zakona. Slavljenka Rose je zelo priljubljena med našimi članicami, saj je tudi članica pevskega kluba in vedno rada sodeluje pri vseh prireditvah podružnice. Svoj dom i-majo na Rockdale in leta 1961 je po 50 letih zopet obiskala svoj rojstni kraj, Stopice pri Novem mestu, kjer je bila s sestro Jennie Sprengel. V družini so štiri hčere in en sin, — vsi so poročeni ter ze-
lo	družabni. Vse članice želimo zla-toporočencema še mnogo zdravih in veselih let in da bi sestra Rose Jagodnik še mnogo vrsto let redno prihajala na seje, kakor doslej.
Globoko sožalje izrekamo sestri Anni Cemetich ob izgubi soproga Markota, ki je bil dobro poznan v naselbini, saj je bil mnogo let brivec, član in odbornik raznih organizacij. Zaradi njegove agilnosti bo zelo pogrešan v naselbini. Poleg žene žaluje za njim tudi sin in dve hčerki ter drugi sorodstvo. Naj v miru počiva! Sorodnikom naše sožalje.
Pri družini Mr. in Mrs. Mando DiBartolomeo so dobili sina. Dekliško ime mamice je Papesh. Naše čestitke.
Družina Frances Muren je izgubila moža in očeta v lepi starosti 87 let. Pokojni, ki je živel na North Broadway, zapušča tudi štiri sinove in dve hčerke. Bil je član raznih organizacij. Žalujočim naše sožalje!
V	bolnišnici se še vedno nahaja Mrs. Antonia Struna. Sestra Mary Bostjancich, se je vrnila na dom po operaciji. Vsem bolnim želimo hitrega okrevanja.

Sorodnice Vaše poročevalke, Mili Koraein in njena hčerka Katja, sta se po štirih mesecih obiska pred kratkim vrnile v domovino. IZ OBISKA SLOVENIJE
Št. 18, Cleveland, Ohio. — Čas
je, da se oglasim, ker cem že malo odpočila odkar sem priromala nazaj v našo prelepo deželo. V starem kraju sem se kar dobro imela. Res sem bila vesela, da smo se po 50 letih zopet sešle z mojimi 4 sestrami in bratom. Lepo smo se zabavali in vožnja je bila odlična. Za nekaj časa bom doma, pa se mi zdi, da bi še kar šla.
Vse sestre prav lepo pozdravljam. Vsem se lepo zahvalim, ki so me zastopale v času moje odsotnosti. Zelo sem bila žalostna, ko sem slišala, da je preminula dobra članica, Mrs. Ana Morel. Pokojni večni mir. — Sosestram pa izrekam prisrčno zahvalo, ki so v času moje odsotnosti bile tak dobre in spremile ses. Morel na zadnji poti. Posebno se zahvalim Mrs. Ana Medveš za molitev in Mrs. P. Duss in njeni hčerki za avtomobil in vsem, ki so se udeležile molitev v cerkvi in pogreba na pokopolišču. — Ko to pišem sem dobila sporočilo, da je umrla sestra Albina Malavašič. Bog ji daj pokoj in večna luč ji naj
so Mr. in Mrs. Frank Muster, Mr. in Mrs. Ignac Kastelic, in Mrs. Mary Groznik na Raub St. obiskali sta Mrs. Mary Kumpar, Mr. John L. Jevitz na domu, Sestro M. Per-petua katera jima je razkazala novi starostni dom “Mary of the Angels”, nato tudi Rev. Al. Sinski, in Mrs. Mary Lesnik.
V	Sheboygnu sta obiskale in bile pogoščene pri Mr. in Mrs. Pris-land, v Elm Grove, Wis. pri Mrs. Josephine Schlossar in hčerki in družini, V Waukegano na domu Mrs. Mary Slana, in Anton Zelenik, nato pri Rev. M. Hiti, župnik fare Matere Božje, in Rev. Al. Adamich, s katerim so poznani še iz domovine. Nato v Wilmingtonu, 111. Rev. George Kuzma, V Chicagi pri družini Louis Setina, na dcmu tudi pri Miss Josephine in Stefie Buchar. Bile sta gost pri “Golden Age Club” v farnem parku, fare Sv. Jožefa, Dalje sta obiskale Mr. in Mrs. Peter Ancel ob priliki njih zlate poroke, Obiskale sta Mr. in Mrs. Val. Ambrose in Mrs. Frances Hubert.

sveti. Naše iskreno sožalje obema družinama! Taka je božja volja, On pokliče naj bodo mlade ali stare.
Najlepše pozdrave vsem odbornicam SZZ in vsem članicam po širni Ameriki, posebno še tistim, s katerimi smo se skupno vozile in bile skupaj v starem kraju, posebno na pikniku na Otočecu v Sloveniji.
Nettie (ali Tončka) Strukel
V	teku štirih mesecev sta obiskale večkrat Chicago in njih zanimive razne muzeje, in druge zanimivosti Chicage. Videle so 0’Hare Air Field, Brookfield Zoo, St. Francis Academy, videle koncerte in gra-duacije, videle parade, kino, piknike, poroke in razne zabave. Bile na romanju v Lemontu na Am. Brezjah in na Holy Hill v Wis. Bile v Geneva, Ul., in sploh kjer koli je bilo kaj razvedrila. Prijateljice tu še iz domovine so zelo skrbele za njih razvedrilo in jih vozile na razne strani, tudi na kopališča vseh vrst.
Čas je prišel ko sta se morale vrniti zaradi pričetka šole. Njene tri hčerke so morale v šolo v začetku septembra. V imenu obeh sorodnic se želim na tem mestu zahvaliti vsem članicem in drugim za njima izkazano gostoljubnost in ljubeznivost, da jima je tako čas lepše potekal v naši domovini. Prepričana sem, da jima bodo ti dnevi ostali nepozabni, katere sta preži-
vele med svojimi znankami iz domovine.
Slovo je bilo pripravljeno v družini Edward Ancel, nakar sta se s parnikom Christoforo Columbo odpeljale proti domu v lepo Slovenijo.
Tudi pri sestri Frances Sega, se je poslovil njen nečak, Edi Pate, učitelj iz Ljubljane, ki je bil tukaj več kot dva meseca. Tu je stanoval pri teti ter nato pri sestričnah Bernice Zwerblies in Frances Capitino in Mary Facinelli in njihovih družinah.
Vem, da bodo vsi imeli mnogo povedati o svojih doživetjih v naši domovini Ameriki, ker jim je bilo vse tako novo, posebno se naše društveno življenje.
Sedaj ko je zopet bolj hladno vreme, upamo, da bomo imele kaj več obiska na naših sejah. Vsem pa na srce polagam, da pogledate v vaše plačilne knjižice in plačajte, če ste zaostale, da ne bo treba tajnici čakati na vašo članarino.

Št. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. — Pozdravljene drage sestre! Zelo prijetno in veselo je bilo, ko smo po poletnem odmoru, zopet prišle skupaj. Seja je bila prav vesela, ker smo zopet videle med nami sestro Noren, ki je zopet zdrava. Sestra tajnica je poročala predloge za do-brodit Zveze.
Čestitke sestri Frances Cimperman, ki je postala stara mati, ko so pri sinu Johnu kupili sinčka. Vsem želim ljubega zdravja in blagoslova božjega.

Ta mesec je za mene žalosten, ker v tem mesecu poteka 33 letnica prerane smrti mojega moža. Bog mu daj večni mir.
50 letnico zakonskega življenja bosta obhajala Matija in Rosi Zupančič, ki sta prišla v Ameriko 1913 leta. V zakonu so se rodili sin John in tri hčere: Theresa, Josephine in Helen. Slavljenka je naša članica že dolgo vrsto let. Ona je že 9-krat stara mati in dvakrat prastara mati. Vse članice jima želimo še mnogo let zdravja in sreče ter božjega blagoslova.

Št. 24, LaSalle, Illinois. — Počitnice so minule in upam, da so se vse članice vrnile zdrave na svoje domove ter se tudi ze odpočile. IJ-pam, da boste prišle vse na sejo, ki se bo vršila dne 6. oktobra. Ker črez poletje ni bilo sej, zato imamo več važnih zadev za rešiti.
Od mojega zadnjega poročila, je bilo več naših članic v bolnišnici: Mary Piska, Ana Hlapcic in Klara Petrovski. Sedaj so vse že na svojih domovih. V bolnišnici se je tudi nahajala Josephine Pohar, ki je tudi že pri boljšem zdravju.
Teta štorklja se je oglasila v družini Mr. in Mrs. Dominic Arbisi in jim pustila sinčka. Materino ime je Mary rojena Oklešen. S čestitkami jim želimo ljubega zdravja.
Srebrno poroko, ali 25 letnico zakona sta slavila Mr. in Mrs. Jack Foley. Josephine je naša dobra kegljačica. Želimo jima še mnogo let zdravja, da bi v sreči dočakala še zlato poroko.
Čestitke tudi Mr. in Mrs. Albin Jordan, ki sta tudi slavila 25 letnico zakonskega življenja. Želimo jima, da bi v zdravju in zadovoljstvu dočakala še svoj zlati jubilej zakona.
Lepa hvala Mrs. Ana Pachak za lepe pozdrave. Želim vam zdravja, da bi še mnogo let pridno pisala v našo Zarjo, ker jaz zelo rada či-tam vaše dopise in dopise vseh drugih podružnic prečitam vse od kraja do konca, ker je vse zelo zanimivo branje. Hvala, Mrs. Peček za pohvalo.
Zopet moram opominjati tiste, ki ste zaostale s svojim asesmen-tom, da bi prišle in poravnale, ker leto gre proti koncu in kmalu bomo zopet v novem letu. Treba je urediti knjige, torej prosim, pridite na sejo, da vas vse skupaj lepo pozdravim. Na svidenje na seji!

Št. 33, Duluth, Minnesota. — Jesen je tukaj, vidi se na vrtu in povsod ter ne bo več dolgo, ko nas bo obiskala zima in članice se bo-mo-grele pri peči.
V	septembru je bilo veliko članic na seji. Minnesotski Zvezin dan je že za nami. Iz Dulutha smo imele poln bus 37 članic. Na poti tja smo molile rožni venec in nazaj grede pa smo prepevale nabožne in narodne pesmi. Na Hibbingu smo zopet videle naše prijateljice, kakor vsako leto na Zvezinem dnevu. Hvala tudi pridnim kuharicam, ki so vse tako dobro pripravile. Vse je bilo kar najboljše, samo našo članico Ančko Podgoršek smo pogrešale, ki se ta dva mesece greje v sončni Califomiji.
Želim zdravja vsem članicam. Na bolniški listi je bila Mary Hennes. Za njeno zdravje je bila darovana sv. maša v cerkvi Sv. Ane v Kelly Lake, Minn.
Na prihodnjih sejah se bo dosti razmotrivalo o načrtih za romanje v Lemont v letu 1964.

članice ste prijazno vabljene, da se udeležite bazarja, razstave in prodaje peciva skupnih podružnic, v nedeljo 13. oktobra v dvorani Sv. Vida.
Imamo še nekaj srečnih knjižic v prodaji, na katere bodo oddana lepa darila ob času bazarja, zato sežite pridno po njih.
Sestra Mary Dobida se je pri padcu po stopnicah zelo poškodovala. Vse ji želimo čimprejšnjega okrevanja. Lepa hvala ses. M. Dacar, A. Husta in J. Lindič za dar v blagajno.
Pri Lappovih smo se zopet prav dobro imele ob času izleta. Najlepša hvala Mrs. Rose Lapp in hčerki Vidi za izvrstno postrežbo.

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Da je naslov temu dopisu primeren, vam bodo potrdila naslednja dejstva.
Podružnica št. 25 z veseljem poroča, da ima v svoji sredi članico, katera je s svojim zakonskim dru-gom slavila biserno poroko. To sta Mr. in Mrs. Frank in Elizabeth O-paskar z 3435 Euclid Hghts. Blvd., Cleveland, Ohio, ki sta 15. avgusta 1963 obhajala 60-letnico skupnega življenja. Dekliško ime slavljenke je bilo Kolar. Poročila sta se 9. avgusta 1903 v trnovski cerkvi sv. Janeza v Ljubljani. Dva dni kasneje sta šla na “honeymoon” ali že-nitovanjsko potovanje in prispela sta v Ameriko, kjer sta ostala in si ustanovila dom. Tu sta vzgojila svojo družino, četvero otrok, ki so vsi dosegli visoke in častne poklice: Frank je odvetnik, Vincent je zobozdravnik, Carl je zdravnik, hčerka Stanislava, poročena Gregor, je učiteljica. Sedaj se veselita tudi 15 vnukov in dveh pravnukov.
K temu dogodku se čestitkam so-i-odnikov in prijateljev pridružujemo tudi uradnice in članice podr. št. 25 in našima slavljencema iskremo kličemo: Živela v zdravju in zadovoljstvu še na mnoga leta!

Št. 47, Garfield Heights, Ohio. — Poletno veselje v prosti naravi je potihnilo. Preostaja nam čas domačih zabav v dvoranah. Že v mesecu septembru je bilo zelo živahno. Podr. št. 25 je praznovala 35 letnico, dne 29. sept. Želimo jim, da bi še dolgo vrsto let ne samo obstojale, ampak pridno vršile delo za napredek, kakor so to delale v preteklosti. Saj je omenjena podr. ena največjih v celi Zvezi.
Dne 13. oktobra bodo imele skupne podružnice bazar v dvorani
To je moje prvo leto pri podružnici kot tajnica. Kot tu v Ameriki rojena Slovenka iz prve generacije se čudim, kako dobro in krepko vzdržujejo naše mamice in stare mamice. Pomislite! V naši sredi pri podružnici imamo okrog 30 članic, ki so že 80 let ali več stare, kakih 80 jih je, ki so med 75 in 80 let stare, mnogo jih je pa med 70 in 75 let stare. Semintja vidim nekatere na cerkvenih in družabnih priredbah. Vesele in nasmejane so, pripravljene so pomagati in sodelovati kjerkoli mogoče. Da, v resnici bi se lahko marsikateri naši mladi “keksarji” skrili pred njimi, ko gre za vztrajnost! Človeku kar dobre de, ko jih vidi hiteti semintja. Vem, da Bog ljubi nas vse, menim pa, da morda le ima naše slovenske mamice malce bolj, ker jih ohrani med nami nekaj dodatnih let. Tako, vidite, da je res, ko pravim, da “slovenska kri ne fali ...”
Rada bi vam poročala nekaj o banketu, katerega bomo imele 29. septembra, ker pa morajo biti vsi dopisi v uredništvu skoraj mesec dni, predno so objavljeni, tega ne morem opisati. (Danes je začetek septembra, ko to pišem). Za sedaj le upamo vse, da bo to velika slavnost naše 35-letnice in bomo poročale o njej v prihodnji izdaji.
Sv. Vida. Vse članice ste lepo vabljene, kakor tudi ostalo občinstvo.
Podr. št. 47, priredi “chicken supper” in ples dne 19. okt. v S. D. D. na 10814 Prince Ave. Začetek od 6 uri. Kdor se ne želi muditi pozno, lahko povečerja in gre domov še za dne. — Članice so pridno na delu s prodajo tikcev. Vsaka članica je obligirana, da vzame eno vstopnico, bodisi, da jo proda, ali pa sama uporabi, kajti edino na ta način nam je zagotovljen napredek in uspeh, da skupno delujemo. Pripravljenega bo dovolj za jesti in piti. Za ples bo skrbela godba Kon-tels, da se boste lahko tudi naplesale in zabavale ves večer. Cena za cel večer je izredno nizka, to je $1.50 za odrasle in polovična cena, to je 75^ za otroke do 12 leta starosti.
Vsi ste res prijazno vabljeni!
Predno pa zaključim želim še enkrat opomniti vse članice, katere do sedaj še niso plačale svoje mesečne prispevke za letos (nekatere dolgujejo še za leto 1962), da to storite prav gotovo še ta mesec. Pomnite, da mora podružnica založiti za vsako članico, ki ne plača ob času, ker na glavni urad moramo odposlati vse prispevke VSAK MESEC. Bliža se konec leta, ko je treba poravnati vse obveznosti in važno je, da ima vsaka članica plačane prispevke. Vam bom vsem hvaležna za naše sodelovanje v tem oziru. In, prosim, ne pozabite dodati 2f, (dva centa) vsaki mesec ali pa 25 centov za celo leto za naše glasilo Zarja. Gotova sem, da jo vse rade čitate, zato je tudi naša dolžnost, da pomagamo vzdrževati jo z našimi prispevki. Torej, do prihodnjič, vas vse skupaj lepo pozdravljam in vam kličem: Zbogom!

Njen ženin je Edward, sin Mr. in Mrs. Vincent Spisak iz Rosewood Ave. — Dne 14. sept. se je poročila Esther M., hčerka Mr. in Mrs. Sholar z Josephom J. Bene-ser. Esther je tudi članica podr. Dne 7. sept. se jo poročila T. Shu-star z C. Obarski. — Vsem novo-poročencem želimo ljubega zdravja in srečnega zakonskega življenja. Kakor vidite je ses. R. Shuster precej zaposlena, kar dve poroki v kratkem času in par vnučkov novorojenčkov v tem letu. Rose je naša predsednica. Iskrene čestitke vsem!

Ses. J. Gorišek iz Berea, O., je praznovala 26. avg. 75 letni rojstni dan. Sprejmite prisrčna voščila od vseh članic, ki vam želimo še mnogo veselih rojstnih obletnic. — Mary Železnik je slavila 75 letni rojstni dan, 11. sept. v St. Pedro, Calif. Tudi njej pošiljamo voščila in pozdrave. Bog vas živi še mnogo let. Pozdrav vsem članicam.

Št. 49, Noble, Ohio. — Ko berem dopise drugih podružnic v naši Zarji, se kar čudim, da imajo toliko zanimanja, da se potrudijo in redno dopisujejo. Jaz bi se še spravila k pisanju po zimi, toda poleti se kar odlaša. Ker nismo imele tri mesece seje, ni kaj posebnega za poročati.
Zelo pa me veseli, da so se članice tako radevolje in sto procentno odzvale in kupile listke za skupno prireditev ohijskih podružnic, ki bo v nedeljo 13. okt. v dvorani pri Sv. Vidu v Clevelandu.
Še vedno imamo par članic bo-lanih, ki so že več let privezane na posteljo, ali stolu in ne morejo ničesar delati. Prosim članice, da jih ena ali druga, ki živi v bližini, o-bišče. To so ses. Barbara Stefanac, 2180 Miller Ave. in Jennie Papež, 20583 Goller Ave. v Euclid, O. V Ft. Meyers, Florida, se nahaja v enakem stanju ses. Frances Žnidaršič. Tudi ona bo vesela, enako njen soprog, če bi se kdo izmed rojakov, ali rojakinj, ki gredo na obisk Floride, ustavil pri njih. Naslov je: Star Rt. 6, Ft. Myer, Florida.
Prvi teden v juniju sem obiskala sorodnike mojega pokojnega soproga, Mr. in Mrs. John Trotter v Pueblo, Colo. Ostala sem pri njih en teden. Med tem sem imela priliko pozdraviti Mr. in Mrs. Pachak, ki je preds. št. 3 v Pueblo in zelo aktivna dopisovalka. Obiskala sem tudi Mrs. Frances Raspet. Lepa hvala njej in hčerkama za prijazen sprejem. Enako lepa hvala Mrs. Frances Grebenc in njeni hčerki Mrs. Laffler ter njeni družini za vso postrežbo in prevoz z autom. Seveda gre pa prevsem najlepša hvala Mr. in Mrs. John Trotter za vso gostoljubnost in postrežko v vseh ozirih.
Poročila se je ena izmed naših mlajših članic, Rosemary Strah. Želimo ji vso srečo in božji blagoslov v novem stanu.
Iz obiska v stari domovini se je vrnila ses. Frances Kochevar. To je bil že njen tretji obisk domovine. Dobrodošla med nami! Lepa hvala vsem članicam, ki so se me spomnile s pozdravi iz starega kraja.

Poletje je kar hitro minilo in upam, da ste se vse članice srečno vrnile s počitnic, predvsem one, ki ste o-biskale staro domovino.
Naše seje se bodo pričele tretjo nedeljo v oktobru. Pridite vse, da bomo kaj koristnega ukrenile. Tudi naše članice so potovale: Mary Gergich je s svojimi hčerkami, ki so vse diplomirane bolničarke, o-biskala hčer Dolores in njeno družino v New Yorku. Mr. in Mrs. Mootze sta obiskala hčer Angeline v Denver, Colo. in njeno družino in nazaj grede sta obiskala še Father Daniel v Pueblo, ki so bili črez 7 let naš pastir ter vse svoje bivše farane lepo pozdravljajo. Cilka Orešnik je obiskala svojo sestro v Illinois. Midva s soprogom sva šla v Lemont dne 7. julija in potem sva obiskala hčerke, Angeline in Helen ter njihove družine v
111.	— Svoje tri nečakinje, Mrs. Modrcin, Mrs. M. Zunich in Mrs. Ana Bratkovich je obiskala njihova 80 let stara teta Ana Shafer iz Brooklyna. Z njo je prišla tudi Mrs. Palčič na ohcet svojega sorodnika, Roberta Vesel in njegove izvoljenke Priscilla Lee Senferd. Želimo jima obilo sreče!
Članica Angeline Jadrich in soprog George sta dobila hčerke-dvoj-čice, da imajo sedaj devet otrok. Iskreno jim čestitamo in želimo, da jim Bog da ljubega zdravja.
Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Drcher sta v krogu svoje družine obhajala štirideset letnico zakona. Imajo dve hčerki in enega sina, vsi poročeni. Enako sta slavila 40 letnico poroke, Mr. in Mrs. Nick Hotujec, ki imata 4 sinove in 2 hčeri, tudi vsi poročeni. Obe slavljenki sta članici Zveze ter jima prisrčno čestitamo.
V	bolnišnici se nahajata Mr. Anthony Orel in Mr. Anthony Springer, soproga naših članic. Ses. Frances Petrich je tudi bila v bolnišnici, a se sedaj zdravi pri hčerki. — Mrs. Nick Cornish je tudi prestala hudo operacijo.
Sin Mr. in Mrs. Henry Sambol je tudi moral v bolnico, zelo nas veseli, da je ozdravel, kar želimo tudi vsem drugim bolnim.
Članico Josephine Toplikar so o-biskale hčerke, Bernice in Elizabeth z družinami. — Pozdrav vsem članicam Zveze.

Št. 54, Warren, Ohio. — Že dolgo odlašam napisati nekaj novic v našo priljubljeno Zarjo. Po par mesecih počitnic, zopet gremo na delo za naše društvo. Naše odbjrnice se pridno trudijo in delajo za napredek, toda žal na seje prihajajo vedno ene in iste in kadar so volitve se nekatere držijo nazaj, tako, da mora vedno zopet vzeti vajeti v roke naša dobra Rose Rachar. Sedaj je bolj težko pridobiti nove članice, ker tukaj v Warrenu ni mnogo Slovencev in še tisti so precej raztreseni po okolici. Bolanih je dosti in tudi smrt pobira naše pionirke. Toda kadar ljubi Bog pokliče, se moramo predati božji volji.
Kmalu bo nastopila hladna jesen. To poletje je mnogo ljudi o-biskalo našo rodno Slovenijo. Jaz pa le v duhu stopam po domačih, nepozabnih stezicah. Naša ga. Albina Novak je potovala po domačih krajih to leto. Ona je bila zelo dobra svoji pokojni mami, zato naj jo sreča spremlja na vseh njenih potih.
Moj brat Tone Česnik je bil pri nas na obisku to leto. Star je 82 let, pa še kar dobro izgleda. -— Žena mojega sina, Elsie in sin Evgene sta bila na obisku v Colorado. Ona ima tam starše, brate in sestro.
8. sept. smo imeli sv. misijon v naši fari Sv. Jakoba. Imamo krasno novo cerkev in naš Msgr. Clarence Holter so skrbni vladar naše fare.
Bolne so članice Mrs. Elizabeth Peršin, in Mrs. Mary Tomsich, ki je tudi bila nekaj dni v bolnišnici, enako Mrs. Waltko in Mrs. Frances Ivack, ki je bila na operaciji. Vsem bolnim sestram želimo, da jim ljubi Bog nakloni zdravje.
V	tem letu so odšli v večnost služabnik božji, Sv. Oče Janez XXin, potem nadškof ljubljanski, prevzišeni Anton Volk. Njim so sledili v večnost g. župnik Gorše iz Slavine in komaj dva meseca za njimi pa so preminuli naš Kneški župnik Ivan Kalan, nagle smrti. Č. g. Kalan so bili zelo dušni oče cele Kneške fare ter zelo priljubljeni pri ljudeh, ki žalujejo za njimi. Kadar so šli na božja pota, so mi večkrat poslali lepe kartice, s pozdravi in blagoslovi. Zelo so skrbeli in molili za svoje farane — izseljence.
V kratkem razdobju je smrt pobrala dva ugledna slov. duhovnika
Slika s pogreba č.g. župnika Gor-šeta iz Slavine, brata umetnika Franceta Goršeta. Duhovnik s križcem na rokavu,so č.g.Kalan, Kneški
Ob smrti so bili 70 let stari in na zadnji poti jih je spremljal škofov namestnik, 65 duhovnikov in množica vernikov. Bili so sošolec č.g. Goršeta iz Slavine in župnika fare Marije Vnebovzete, č.g. Matija Jagra v Clevelandu.
Vsem blagim pokojnim naj bo lahka hladna gruda in naj jim sveti
župnik, ki so sledili svojemu pok. sošolcu po manj kot dveh mesecih v večnost. Naša ses. Šajn, št. 54 je bila rojena v Kneški fari.

li	smo se sv. maše, katero je daroval prečastiti g. pater Anton Prešeren, 80 letnik. Med mašo smo tudi zapele nekaj slovenskih Marijinih pesmi in potem smo se slikali pred cerkvijo s g. patrom Prešernom.
Ko smo zvečer večerjale v nekem hotelu, smo počastile Mrs. Prisland, ki je prav tisti dan imela svoj rojstni dan. Prinesli so ji birthday cake in vsi navzoči smo ji zapeli in ji voščili še mnogo, mnogo let. Mrs. Prisland je bila tudi voditeljica naše skupine. Bližalo se je polnoči, ko smo šli spat.
Drugo jutro smo se z letali odpeljali proti Jugoslaviji. Pristali smo v Zagrebu in odtam smo nadaljevali z busom proti slovenski prestolnici, Ljubljani. Večerilo se je že in dež je padal, zato smo o-stale črez noč v ljubljanskem hotelu. Ljubljana je jako lepo mesto, moderno urejeno. Drugo jutro smo šle na Kompas, se tam prijavile ter nato nadaljevale z Mrs. Kamnikar vsaka v svojo smer proti našim rodnim krajem. Ona je šla z vlakom v Trbovlje, a jaz z busom proti Logatcu. Dobili so se vedno dobri ljudje, ki so nama šli na roke, da sva srečno prišle k svojim na domove. — Pa še prihodnjič.

Vtisi iz potovanja v domovino
St. 88, Johnstown, Pa. — Cenjene sestre: Naj nekoliko opišem svoje potovanje v Evropo to poletje. Mrs. Kamnikar in jaz sva se namenile, da obiščeva staro domovino skupno s članicami SŽZ. Dne 13. junija sva se z jet letalom odpeljale iz Pitsburgha v New York. Vožnja je bila prijetna in vzelo je malo več kot eno uro do N. Y. Takoj po izstopu nas je že agent poklical po imenu ter nas spremil do urada, kjer je že bilo veliko Slovencev in članic Zveze, bilo nas je okoli 69 in po eni uri smo se vkrcale na zrakoplov, ki nas je v 6 urah prepeljal v London. Vse članice Zveze smo dobile svoj znak. Iz Londona smo z drugim letalom odleteli v Lurd, kjer smo ostali dva dneva in si ogledali vse zanimivosti, predvsem slovito cerkev Lurške Matere Božje. Cerkev je pokrita z raznovrstnimi svetimi podobami, katere so nanosili ljudje. Glavni oltar je precej odmaknjen ter mnogo malih stranskih oltarjev je vza-
daj, kjer duhovniki mašujejo. Ko eden konča, že pristopi drugi. Pred cekvijo je velika planjava in vsako jutro pripeljejo bolnike. Slišala sem tudi, da bolnike kopljejo v lurški vodi. Popoldne ob 4 uri se vrši procesija s sv. Rešnjim telesom in duhovnik podeli blagoslov vsakemu bolniku. Med procesijo pa neprestano pojejo. Zvonovi zvonijo, premilo pojo in pozdravljajo Lurško Gospo, “Ave Maria”. Procesija je trajala dve uri in stalno so peli. Ljudi je bilo na tisoče.
V	pondeljek pa smo se odpeljali v Rim, bilo je že precej pozno ponoči in tudi tam smo ostali dva večera. Lastnik hotela, kjer smo prenočevali je Slovenec, Levstik. Drugo jutro nas je bus peljal na ogled raznih zanimivosti v Rimu; bili smo tudi v baziliki sv. Petra, kjer so ravno bile v teku volitve novega papeža. Videli smo tudi grobnico kjer počiva sv. oče Janez XXIII in še mnogo drugih grobnic, kjer počivajo papeži. Bili smo tudi v ka-

How to Keep Your Child Healthy at School
1. Avoid chilling. Be sure raingear and extra sweaters are on hand for that unexpected turn in the weather — children are noted for leaving such equipment at school or at a friend’s house on the last warm day. Rounding gear up beforehand removes morning confusion — and possibly a cold, while no one has proved that exposure brings on colds directly, some doctors say that cold viruses may lie dormant on the sensitive membranes of the nose and throat, waiting to strike when resistance is down.
2. Consult your doctor about cold medications for children. Your doctor is the only person who can prescribe for your child as an individual — and it's wise not to try to do it yourself, or try to cut adult pills in half to get a “junior dosage.” To meet certain requirements for child-sized dosages, the makers of Coricidin antihistamine cold tablets have developed a chewy, cherry-flavored tablet called Medilets, which is especially produced for children. Its purpose is to help get cold symptoms under control.
3. Insist on proper nutrition. The
noted medical authority, Dr. Fishbein, says in his "Popular Medical Encyclopedia” that children who are well fed and well taken care of are much less likely to catch cold than those who are not.
Don’t fall prey to the attitude that a cold is inevitable. Even during the pressure of holidays and other tension-crowded events, remember that your child needs orange juice or other high vitamin C fruit once a day, meals high in meat or other protein, and, of course, milk.
4. Don’t overheat your house. When you awake on a chilly morning it’s a temptation to turn the heat way up; sometimes you forget about it because you adjust to the increased temperature gradually. In mid-afternoon when children come home from school and start runninng in and out, the temperature is hovering in the 80’s inside! A lower room temperature saves the body a shock when confronted with the cold outdoors. (You won’t feel so chilly, either, when children leave the door open.)
5. Keep your home’s humidity well regulated. According to Dr. Fishbein, the average home has a humid-idy reading of 20 in the winter time which he thinks is far too dry. A reading of 40 to 50 (it may be necessary to invest in a humidity gadget to keep track of this) protects throat and nasal passages from drying out.

PATTERN FOR A HAPPY HALLOWE’EN
A stitch in time can often save everybody’s Hallowe’en fun. And now is the time to get busy on costumes for the youngsters, or on planning party foods and games. It’s positively spooky what a difference your foresight can make.
One pattern for youthful enjoyment of the holiday is a jump suit that can be varied to suggest a bunny, a cat, or a spaceman! It’s McCall’s Pattern G991, available in a range of young sizes from 4 to 12.
For the cat outfit, McCall’s suggests a printed fur cloth with black velveteen ears and mitts, and black cotton satin for the cap facing. You'll need one yard of hat wire or feathering for stiffening the tail, and four or five ounces of cotton or Dacron balling for stuffing ears and tail.
A bunny costume charming enough to melt the flintiest grownup can be made for small trick or-treaters out of pink Orion pile with white cotton satin bow and cap facing. For the floppy ears, you’ll need white felt lacings and buckram interfacings. Make the “cottontail” out of white 4-ply knitting worsted.
The space suit may send a small boy into orbit, but if his mother has feet on the ground she’ll buy a water-repellent fabric for it. Then the garment can become a snowsuit when Hallowe’en is just a memory.
On this outfit, the sleeves and trouser legs are finished with ready-made 3%” wide knitted black cuffs; the cap is lined in black cotton satin. Make the space traveler’s “antenna” out of pipe cleaners, covered with green single fold bias tape.
Whichever costume you choose, a few general tips will make your task easier; first be sure that woolens, washable fabrics and interfacings are pre-shrunk. Straighten the ends of your fabric by tearing across. If it does not tear well, draw a thread a-cross, then cut on line of drawn thread.
To bring your efforts to a fitting conclusion, master the art of stay-stitching. This means that you run a row of machine-stitching a scant %” outside the seam line indicated on the pattern to prevent the edges from stretching.
Trim enclosed seams to about V\" from stitching on collars, etc., before turning right side out. Clip seam edges 011 inward curves and corners when necessary. Press seams and sections as the work progresses; press each seam open after stitching unless tho pattern directions show otherwise.

could be simpler to fix than cheese-burghers, lor example? But and ordinary cheeseburger becomes a special Hallowe’en treat when decorated with “eyes”, "nose” and “teeth” cut out of a green pepper to suggest a Jack O’

Similarly, you can make a “midnight Cake” out of any good Devil's Food mix. Atop the cake, draw a witch’s broom and hat, or an orange pumpkin and black cat. You can buy special icing and gels in squeeze tubes which make cake decoration easy.
An unusual Black Cat Pinata is both a party decoration and a party game sure to delight youngsters. Basically, it’s just a paper bag filled with small gilts and goodies and decorated with crepe and construction paper to resemble a sinister cat’s head. You hang it over the party table and after the refreshments have been disposed of, the youngsters are blind-folded and take turns trying to break open the grinning cat to release the stream of gifts inside.
You might intrigue the youngsters even more by telling them how Hallowe’en got its association with black cats and other sinister symbols.

In later times, to scare away spooks, people began hollowing out turnips and pumpkins and placed lighted candles inside to scare evil spirits from the house. Why was the result called a Jack O’ Lantern? Tradition says an Irishman named Jack, too wicked for heaven and expelled from hell for playing practical jokes on the devil, was condemned to walk the earth with a lantern lorevermore.
Few people realize that trick-or-treating was originally an adult custom! English country folks went “a-souling” on Hallowe’en, begging for “soul cakes” door to door. In Ireland hundreds of years ago, groups of farmers went from house to house soliciting food for the village Hallowe’en festivities, promising good luck to cheerful givers and threatening tightwads with evil fortune.
But it was the kids who originated Hallowe’en costume’s after all. It was the custom in some regions for children to dress up in each other’s clothes (boys donning girls’ outfits and vice versa) and go out to play tricks and collect loot.
Costumes are a little more elaborate these days. But whether a youngster prefers to be a cool cat, don the habit of a rabbit or go into orbit as a spaceman, you can satisfy his whim - with the stitch in time that may establish a continuing pattern lor Hallowe’en fun.
