Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 30/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 7.8.2011 19.in 20. NEDELJA MED LETOM 19th & 20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Povezanost z vsem svetom Čeprav so poletni meseci po svojem izvirnem pomenu bolj mirni in brez velikih dogodkov, saj se umiri življenje na vseh straneh, je pač čas počitka in počitnic, vendar se vedno dogaja tudi kaj povsem novega in drugačnega. Njihov namen ni biti z ljudmi in zanje, temveč pogledati razmere, ugotoviti potrebe, napisati poročila in ocene in nato poročati svojim predpostavljenim. Sunday's Readings I 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading 1 Kings 19:9.11-13 Elijah learns that God can talk to us in the quietness of our heart, as well as in the glory of nature. Second Reading Romans 9:1-5 St Paul recalls the glories of God's covenant with the Israelites, and prays that they may recognise Jesus as the Messiah. Gospel Matthew 14:22-33 The divinity of Jesus is shown by his walking on the sea; and through his humanity he reaches out to Peter, takes him by the hand and saves him. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel, the fact that Jesus can command the storm to be still, and can even cross the sea by walking on it, shows only one thing: that he is God. The disciples, even in their panic, would not only see the miracle - they would remember the scriptures. They would know that they were in the presence of the God who stills the waves, and makes the storms cease: "Truly, you are the Son of God." But through his humanity, Jesus shows how much he loves the disciples with the beautiful words, "Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid." This is the message that the risen Christ gives to his apostles when he appears to them in the upper room: "Do not be afraid," and "Peace be with you." But the Gospel teaches us also about ourselves. The symbolism of the event reminds us that we are, in this life, in danger from the storms of this world. Personal sin, illness, bereavement and persecution can all cause storms in our lives. Temptations against living a life of faith can be frequent and strong. When Peter attempts to leave the boat and go to Christ on his own, he begins to sink. And what does Jesus do except put Peter back in the boat? Peter is often impetuous in the Gospels, and here his desire to go to Christ on his own gets him into trouble. He is saved by being brought back to the boat; and the ship can be seen as representing the Church. We are, of course, saved by God, but we are saved as members, so to speak, of a crew. Application This image of the Church as a ship is very ancient. In the Old Testament, the whole of creation is saved by taking refuge in Noah's ark. In the New Testament, Jesus is seen preaching from Peter's boat, saving it from storms and commanding that it be steered "to the other side", or be "put out into the deep". By putting Peter back in the boat, Jesus is showing us that even the prince of the apostles is saved by remaining in the ship of the Church. Ancient authors also liked to note that ships in those days were made of wood with metal nails, and so drew a parallel with the cross. The mainmast of a ship with its crosspiece also has the shape of a cross. By staying in the ship we also cling to the cross. Throughout the centuries, many people have felt that they can get to God better on their own, rather than being kept back by the sometimes troublesome group that is the Church. Perhaps we feel this too, especially when the Church is racked by scandal or division. But it is especially when the storms are raging that we are called to stay in the ship of the Church. "The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'" Sunday's Readings 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Isaiah 56:1. 6-7 Isaiah presents a vision of future glory, where all people of good intention, and loving hearts, will rejoice together in the Lord. Second Reading Romans 11:13-15.29-32 St Paul awaits the day when the House of Israel will accept the salvation won for them by Christ. After all, this has been promised, and God's word is certain. Gospel Matthew 15:21-28 The Canaanite woman's persistence in prayer is a great example, and as such is acknowledged by Jesus. Jesus even seems surprised by her faith, and it seems to help him to realise the breadth and depth of his mission. Gospel Teaching The healing of the Canaanite woman's daughter comes about through the mother's faithful perseverance. Jesus is impressed with her unrelenting prayer. Her faith is a wonderful example. Although his initial response seems hesitant, or even harsh, Jesus cannot ignore the cry of the poor woman, and she is rewarded. What an incredible gift - the restoration of her beloved daughter to full health. God's love is made manifest through her healing. We may ask why Jesus responded to the woman in the way he did. After all, it does seem, to be honest, brusque, even a tad rude. The answer may come through understanding something of Jesus' two natures. Despite being fully human and fully divine, Jesus in his humanity learnt to understand God's will through the events of life. We are told elsewhere in the New Testament how Jesus learnt through suffering. It is all too easy to think that Jesus knew it all from the start. In his encounter with the Canaanite woman, he is helped to understand more about the nature and extent of his mission. Her persistence reaps benefits for all. In all likelihood, Matthew's Gospel was written for a Jewish-Christian community. Throughout, it has specific Jewish references, which are to help and challenge new converts. Thus it comes as no surprise that the meeting with the Canaanite woman has Jesus initially focused on the chosen people, and their role in salvation. However, Jesus would have been aware of Isaiah's prophecy of a time when all are united in God's love. His encounter with the woman may have prompted him to reflect on this. Again, her persistence helped him to help us. Through her faith, a deepened understanding of the blessedness of all peoples develops, while, through Jesus' perseverant obedience to the will of God, salvation is won for all. Application The Canaanite woman's faith and persistence can help us to reflect on how God's love encompasses all peoples. We believe that Jesus' life, death and resurrection is the ultimate expression of God's love for all, and it is important for us to remember how Jesus loved and accepted people during his earthly ministry. Through the healing of the Canaanite woman's daughter, we receive inspiration in our attempts to look on, and love, all peoples of different nationalities and creeds as equals. We are spurred on in our daily mission to accept and treat all peoples with the same respect and dignity. Ecumenism, and inter-faith dialogue, can only be strengthened by such a reflection. As for perseverance in prayer, and the Canaanite woman's example, we know this is not always easy. It takes courage. It takes a leap of faith at times. Yet God always hears our prayers. If we think God is not hearing our prayers, perhaps we could ask the Holy Spirit for some enlightenment. At times our prayers are not always answered as we might expect.
