Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 33/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 4.9.2011 23. NEDELJA MED LETOM Angelska nedelja 23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Značilnost skupnosti Cerkve »Ako greši tvoj brat zoper tebe, pojdi in ga posvari med štirimi očmi. Člane povezuje soodgovornost in solidarnost v istem bivanju in istem prizadevanju. Odsek sv. Jožef ima tri ekipe: MURA (Jaka Muhič, Andrej Leban, Jožica Groznik, Frank Pintar); SAVA (Tony Vinčec, Frank Mramor, Gizela Hauzar, Tony Prijatelj), SOČA (Ernest Zrim, Ivan Miketič, Vinko Benc , Jerry Ponikvar). Odsek sv. Ob koncu tekmovanja je Jerry Ponikvar podelil prvim trem skupinam praktične nagrade in sicer: 1. mesto MURA, 2. mesto LEDAVA in 3. mesto REKA. Sunday's Readings 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Ezekiel 33:7-9 We have a responsibility to challenge those who do evil so that they might turn away from their sin and turn towards God. Second Reading Romans 13:8-10 We are reminded of our duty to love our neighbour as ourselves. If we love, we have fulfilled all the commandments. Gospel Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus tells his disciples that the primary responsibility for righting wrongs lies in the offender and the offended coming together and talking about a solution. "If your brother sins [against you], go and tell him his fault between you and him alone." Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel reading, Jesus offers us a courageous solution to life's hurts. When someone wrongs the community in some way, rather than immediately resorting to litigation, both the offender and the offended should come together and try to sort out their difficulties. The courts should only be a last resort when all else has failed. Jesus recognises that injustice and harm to the community require justice and reparation. However, if justice, sorrow, forgiveness and restitution come voluntarily, as a result of insight and cooperation, they will be more effective, long- lasting and heartfelt. Externally imposed judgement and compulsory reparation often cause divisions, anger and resentment as people debate the nature and size of the penalty. They rarely heal wounds and repair a broken heart. Jesus tells us that when we are able, within the family, to sort out wrongdoing, we are much more likely to keep the miscreant among us and, together, work towards reunification and peace. Jesus knows that this is not a "soft option". Forgiveness and understanding can be very difficult, but he will be there, offering comfort, wisdom and support. Application The extraordinary degree of forgiveness which accepts the child soldiers and other members back into the village is supernatural. Only God can touch hearts so deeply that this absolution could ever be possible. It is also why, for so many of the offenders, such mercy is a moment of conversion. They know the enormity of their actions and know they do not deserve forgiveness. The words "forgive and forget" are easier said than done. Forgiveness can demand enormous courage and letting go of hurt that may never be forgotten. Hurt inflicts wounds and leaves scars, which may never be pain-free. Yet just as forgiveness allowed Jesus to make the wounds of the crucifixion his badge of honour, we also have a similar option. We may bear the scars, but we don't need to pick at them and make them bleed. We don't need to bear our injuries in hidden, festering silence that damages and destroys. Openness and honest sharing do not trivialise our hurt. Instead, they allow us to comfort and heal each other, restoring broken relationships. This is the coming together and meeting of hearts and minds that we cannot do alone. We would fail. Yet, with Jesus in our midst, as he promised, all things are possible. SLOVENSKA ŠOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL_ Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendents of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school, as many already have done, especially this past summer on the school excursion to Slovenia. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 17, at 9:00 A.M. in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summer of 2000 and this past summer, we organized an excursion of Slovenia for them, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last two excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 18. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 17, 9:00 A.M.
