« Jezusovo poslanstvo je vzpostaviti kraljestvo miru in ljubezni. - (Prim. Oznanjevalec2004) 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. (Ps122) First Reading 2 Samuel 5:1-3 The Israelites anoint David as their king and shepherd. He had led them to victory; he was their own flesh and blood; more importantly, God had chosen him. Second Reading Colossians 1:12-20 Jesus was first-born of creation and firstborn from the dead. Through him and for him all things were created and reconciled. In him all things come to unity and perfection. Gospel Luke 23:35-43 The crucified Jesus would not save himself; he saved, instead, the criminal at his side who made confession of his sins. Jesus assured him of a place in his heavenly kingdom. "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." Illustration The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a work of children's fiction published in 1950 by an unlikely author. He was a distinguished Oxford academic with no children of his own, yet C.S. Lewis had a gift for conveying great theological truths using imagery that was accessible to people of all ages. One of his most famous characters was the lion called Aslan, "King above all High Kings", guardian and saviour of the imaginary land of Narnia. Wise, compassionate, and strong, Aslan gives up his own life in order to save a boy doomed to die. Though a powerful beast of great dignity, Aslan al- 534 | VESTNIK 2019 lows himself to be shaved of his great mane before being tortured to death by the forces of evil. His mocking enemies imagine they have vanquished good for ever. However, Asian had chosen to lay down his life. Innocent of any wrongdoing, his sacrifice of love unleashes an infinitely more powerful energy than anything evil can do. The fictional character of Aslan portrays a kind of leadership that transcends the might and pageantry of worldly rulers. In him we glimpse an ideal of loving self-sacrifice and a strength used for others in the cause of right. It is meant, of course, to remind us of our Lord Jesus Christ, whose universal kingship we commemorate today. Gospel Teaching Today's Mass readings also use imagery to describe Christ's unique kind of kingship. We hear about David, the shepherd king, an image that Jesus himself found inspiring. He had no doubt watched shepherds leading their sheep, placing their own bodies at night across the doorway of the sheepfold to protect them. It was a lonely, dangerous life, and Jesus identified strongly with that role. Our second reading uses the image of a head, indivisible from the rest of the body, but sustaining and guiding it. St Paul sees the Church as a body with Christ as its head, reconciling and unifying all creation in himself. Our Gospel reading offers a more powerful image still. St Luke describes a scene of execution, with Jesus hanging on the cross between two criminals. Undefended against an unjust conviction; humiliated at the hands of his enemies; dying an agonising death - there could not be a more vivid image of a servant king bearing the suffering of those who look to him for rescue. This was not a kind of leadership the Jewish high priest or Roman procurator Pontius Pilate could easily comprehend. They enjoyed wealth and status, and were prepared to exercise power corruptly in order to keep it. A proper king, they assumed, would use his regal status to further his own interests. This was the test they put to Jesus: "If you are king of the Jews, save yourself." They could not understand that the test of a true king is not whether he can save himself, but whether he is willing to save his people. Application We, too, may be tempted to conceive of leadership in terms of self-interest. There are times, perhaps, when we wish Jesus would use his divine power to promote the careers and fortunes of his friends. We might quite like it if Jesus crushed our enemies. We might enjoy basking in his reflected glory. We might wish for a share of that power or celebrity. But the Gospel sets before us an alternative kind of power - love for others - and a radically different kind of crown - a painful one of thorns. To follow Jesus is to care about others more than ourselves and to suffer when they suffer. To follow our king is to fight the cause of justice and peace; and, if necessary, to lay down our lives and reputation in the service of God and those whom God loves. It is to identify ourselves with the lowly and needy people of this world. We are followers of a servant king. We have inherited his light. All of us are leaders in one way or another. Some of us carry responsibility at work; others exercise voluntary jobs or ministries; many of us have families - and there is no more sacrificial leadership than parenthood. All of us are called to set a Christian example in the local community, and that kind of good citizenship may cost us dearly at times. Whatever strength, authority or wisdom we have, we exercise humbly, as Our Lord did, for the sake of others. Jesus Christ, king of the universe, asks nothing less of us. VESTNIK 2019 | 435 5B6 j VESTNIK 2019 Our "NEW YEAR'S EVE" celebration is just a short 5-1/2 weeks away. As you've heard, we are joining forces with our Slovenian neighbours at Slovenski Park and determined to make New Years Eve a fabulous party to ring in the New Year. We've expanded our theme to be: "A night at the Oscars, on The Red Carpet". With details to be finalized we welcome anyone who would like to join our planning committee. We will be meeting on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00 pm anyone with ideas is always welcome! You've all heard that we have already started selling New Year's Eve tickets. The price until December 15th will be: $80 for adults, $55 for students. The cost of these tickets after December 15th will be: $99 for adults and $65 for students. The reason for having 2 price tickets is to help the planning committee better plan and prepare for guest numbers rather than having to finalize all the details last minute. Tickets are printed and already on sale. Remember, tickets are to be paid for to confirm your reservation. So... to ensure your place at our 'New Year's Oscars/Red Carpet event', be sure to contact Heidy Novak at novakhsn@gmail.com or 905-317 -6002. Who livest and reignest forever. Amen. The wreath's symbolism of the advent (coming) of Light into the world is clear. The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (purple is the penitential color used during Advent and Lent; rose is a liturgical color used only on Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent) help to symbolize not only our expectation and hope in Our Savior's first coming into the world, but also in his Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world. The wreath itself is also symbolic. The circle of evergreen in which the candles are placed represents everlasting life. On the first Sunday of Advent, you may sprinkle the wreath with holy water and bless it before the first purple candle is lit. The candle[s] are lit each day of the week, followed by the blessing before meals, if you use the wreath at mealtime. Blessing for the Advent Wreath: O God, by whose word all things are sanctified, pour forth thy blessing upon this wreath and grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the Coming of Christ. You sent your Son to be the Light of the world and to spread his light of love to all. Bless us and may the ever increasing brightness of candles be a sign to us of the approaching nearness of your Son, that we might prepare in joy for his humble birth in a manger and be ready to receive him at his coming again in glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
