Iz uvodnika Knjigi portretov na pot
(Knjiga bo izšla v založbi Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru)
Ob deseti obletnici delovanja Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru leta 2014 smo izdali monografijo Deset let Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru, v kateri smo popisali nastanek in delovanje druge slovenske medicinske fakultete. Veliko se je dogodilo v prvem desetletju in kar naenkrat smo že krepko zakorakali v drugo. Skrbnemu opazovalcu ne uidejo pomembni mejniki razvoja od uveljavitve bolonjske reforme do največjega dosežka - izgradnje nujno potrebne fakultete, ki blesti na desnem bregu Drave in se po zamisli arhitekta prof. Borisa Podrecce navezuje na mesto in univerzo. Ves čas smo, po septembru 2013 še posebej intenzivno, spremljali razvoj medicinskih študijev in novosti uvajali v program, razvijali oz. dobesedno oživeli smo bazične raziskave. Novi ustrezni prostori in vrhunska oprema so bili temelj za snovanje številnih novosti in sprememb.
A vendar ne smemo pozabiti na tiste, ki so in ki smo v preteklosti kot visokošolski učitelji orali ledino in tlakovali pot Medicinski fakulteti Univerze v Mariboru. Ko smo razmišljali, koga vse podrobneje predstaviti, smo naleteli na prvo oviro. Veliko jih je bilo v preteklosti, ki so vizionarsko in davno pred našim časom sanjali o medicinskem študiju v Mariboru. V trenutku se je nabralo več kot sto(!) tistih, ki bi si vsekakor zaslužili, da jih navedemo v knjigi. Ugotovili smo, da bi bilo delo preobširno, ne glede na to, da bi bilo še kako smotrno, da bi ga opravili in iztrgali pozabi in času imena in zasluge naših predhodnikov, ki so bili izvrstni kliniki, naš zgled in pomembni učitelji, a se niso odločili, ali pa preprosto niso imeli priložnosti za akademsko kariero.
From the editorial to the Book of Portraits on its Way

In 2014, on the tenth anniversary of operations of the University of Maribor Faculty of Medicine, we published the monograph "Ten Years of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor". In the monograph, we provided a description of the creation and operation of the second Slovenian medical faculty. Much has happened since the first decade and we have already advanced into the second. An attentive observer would not have missed the important milestones of our development from the establishment of the Bologna Reform to our greatest achievement—building an urgently needed faculty on the right riverbank of the Drava River. Following the ideas of the Architecture Professor Boris Podrecca, the faculty is attached to the city and the university. All along, especially since September 2013, we have monitored the development of our medical studies, introduced new features to the program, and developed or renewed basic research studies. Novel appropriate premises and state-of-the-art medical equipment have been the basis for the formation of numerous innovations and changes.
Nonetheless, we must not forget those who were our past higher education instructors who broke new ground and paved the way for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor. When we were considering all those who should be mentioned, we encountered an obstacle. Many people in the past had a vision, and long before our time, dreamt of medical studies in Maribor. A list of more than one hundred people who deserved to be named in this book was quickly generated. We realized that this was too many, even though it would have been satisfying to include all the names and contributions of our predecessors who have been excellent clinicians, role

Tako je znotraj uredniškega odbora ostala zamisel, da se posvetimo visokošolskim učiteljem in visokošolskim učiteljicam iz nekdanje Splošne bolnišnice Maribor, sedanjega Univerzitetnega kliničnega centra Maribor, ki so bili habilitirani do leta 2002. Zanamcem ostaja pomembna naloga, da nadaljujejo naše delo in ustrezno predstavijo visokošolske učitelje, ki so nazive dobili po letu 2002, in seveda vse nosilce. Žal čas neusmiljeno beži in nekaterih ni več med nami.
Na tem mestu naj mi bo dovoljeno, da se vendarle ozrem na čase, ko smo utemeljevali potrebo po ustanovitvi druge slovenske medicinske fakultete in pripravljali kurikulum, v katerem smo imeli edinstveno možnost in priložnost zapisati vse vsebine, ki so bile do ustanovitve fakultete oktobra 2003 v svetu že uveljavljene, v slovenskem pa so predstavljale popolno novost. V ožji skupini (tedanji direktor Splošne bolnišnice Maribor in Univerzitetnega kliničnega centra Maribor, prim. doc. dr. Gregor Pivec, kirurg prof. dr. Vojko Flis in strokovni direktor prof. dr. Ivan Krajnc), v kateri smo pripravljali kurikulum, smo prebili brez števila ur v proučevanju različnih študijskih programov, novosti, razmišljali o nadaljnjem razvoju bolnišnice in financiranju nove ideje. Ne direktor in ne propulzivni, izvrstni zdravnik in raziskovalec v tistem času še nista bila visokošolska učitelja, a sta vizionarsko sledila v preteklosti posejanemu semenu bodoče fakultete. Z absolutno podporo strokovnega sveta smo s konsenzom spisali prvi program. Podrobneje o tem pišemo v monografiji Deset let Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru iz leta 2014.
Tedaj smo se lahko naslonili na ugledne in svetovno priznane domače in tuje strokovnjake, vrhunske profesorje in akademike, ki so zastavili svojo čast in dobro ime za zgodovinski projekt Medicinska fakulteta Univerze v Mariboru. Najbolj vidnim med njimi smo po sklepu Senata Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru podelili častni naziv Zaslužni gostujoči profesor Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru - akademik prof. dr. dr. h. c. Felix Unger, zasl. prof. dr. Günter Josef Krejs, prof. dr. Wilfred
models, and important teachers but did not decide on or did not have the opportunity for an academic career.
Thus, the editorial board decided to devote ourselves to naming higher education teachers (women and men) from General Hospital Maribor, which is now University Clinical Centre Maribor, who had habilitated before 2002. For posterity, an important task is continuing our work and appropriately representing higher education teachers who acquired their titles after 2002 and, of course, all subject holders, although unfortunately, some have died.
On this occasion, allow me to look back on the times when we were discussing the need to establish the second Slovenian medical faculty and preparing the curriculum that we had the unique possibility and opportunity to describe. This work was done by the founding faculty in October 2003, who were already established in the world, but represented a complete novelty in Slovenia. The core group preparing the curriculum was the then-Director of the General Hospital Maribor and University Clinical Centre Maribor, Senior Doctor Assistant Professor Gregor Pivec, Surgeon and Full Professor Vojko Flis, and Medical Director and Full Professor Ivan Krajnc. We spent innumerable hours studying various study programs and innovations in deliberating development of the hospital and financing the new idea. Neither the director nor the excellent physicians and researchers at the time were yet higher education instructors, but have followed a vision about the future faculty. With the full support of the professional council, we have, by consensus, written the first program. More detail is in the 2014 monograph, "Ten Years of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor."
We turn to esteemed, world-renowned local and foreign experts, top professors and academicians who staked their reputation and good name on the historic project of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor. To the most prominent among them, the honorary title "Honorary Visiting Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor" was conferred by decision of the Senate of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor. Četudi smo se pri snovanju pričujoče knjige ozrli na prehojeno pot, naj zapišem tudi nekaj o nadaljnjih razvojnih smereh Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru. V zaključnem postopku je študijski program Farmacija in Dentalna medicina.
Omenil sem že, da smo skoraj v celoti obnovili enovit magistrski študijski program Splošna medicina in mu dodali veliko vsebin, da bomo študente usposobili tudi za raziskovalno delo, nekatere vsebine smo smiselno združili, večji poudarek smo dali kompete-tivnosti in še zlasti etičnosti. Vrsto let smo načrtovali, zdaj smo tako daleč: po sklepu Senata Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru je v pripravi razpis študijskega programa Splošna medicina v angleškem jeziku.
Glede na novi zakon o visokem šolstvu smo na Medicinski fakulteti Univerze v Mariboru že v študijskem letu 2017/2018 za krajši delovni čas oz. v manjšem, 25-odstotnem deležu, zaposlili 80 do 90 zdravnikov iz Univerzitetnega kliničnega centra, in tako vsaj nekoliko ublažili kadrovski deficit na fakulteti. Vsekakor bomo naredili vse, kar je v naši moči, da bodo naši študentje še naprej deležni mednarodno primerljivega znanja in se bodo oblikovali v izobražene, etične in empatične zdravnike, ki bodo brez grenkega priokusa radi ostali v domovini.
Knjiga, ki je pred vami, je še en kamenček v mozaiku, ki mu pravimo Medicinska fakulteta Univerze v Mariboru. Da bo mozaik popoln in mojstrovina, ki se bo upirala tegobam časa, se bo treba v prihodnje še zakopati med arhivsko dokumentacijo in zbrati ter urediti manjkajoče delčke - že samo nekateri snovalci programa Splošna medicina ob omenjenem letu niso bili visokošolski učitelji. Although we, upon the writing of this book, looked back on our path, let me also write something about further development of disciplines for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor. Our final procedure will be study programs in Pharmacy and Dental Medicine.
I already mentioned that we have almost entirely renewed the uniform Master's study programme General Medicine and added content to it so that we also qualify students for research; we combined some content logically and placed greater emphasis on competitiveness and especially on ethics. For many years we have been planning, and now, after the decision of the Senate of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor to call for a study program in General Medicine in English, it is in preparation.
According to our new law on higher education, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor, already in academic year 2017-2018, employed 80 to 90 physicians from the University Clinical Centre, part-time or for 25 percent. This at least somewhat assuaged the staff deficit among the faculty. We will do everything in our power to ensure our students gain knowledge comparable to international education and become educated, ethical and empathetic physicians who want to stay in their homeland.
The book that is in front of you is another small stone in the mosaic that we call the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor. For the mosaic to be a masterpiece that will resist the afflictions of time, we must, in the future, commit ourselves to archival documentation and gather and arrange missing fragments. Already, only some planners of the General Medicine program upon the mentioned year were not higher education teachers.

seveda so in prav bi bilo, da mlajši rodovi vedo, kdo vse so posameznice in posamezniki, ki so v ideji ustanavljanja druge slovenske medicinske fakultete prepoznali tudi svoj osebni, strokovni in akademski interes. Tempus fugit, čas beži, zato sem prepričan, da bodo tudi tisti, ki jih ni v tem zbiru, našli svoje in ustrezno mesto v kateri od naslednjih publikacij. O številnih uglednih zdravnicah in zdravnikih, ki so pionirsko orali ledino razvoja medicinske vede, je najti zapise v monografiji 200 let Splošne bolnišnice Maribor, pa tudi v monografiji, ki smo jo izdali ob deseti obletnici Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru.
In ne nazadnje: zbrani zapisi bodo sčasoma postali dokument in obogatitev vsebin zgodovine medicine, saj pričujoči zbir predstavlja prvo takšno delo v tem delu Slovenije.

Now, of course, they are. The younger generations should know who all these individuals are who recognized their personal, professional and academic interests in the formation of the second Slovenian medical faculty. Tempus fugit, time passes. This is why I am convinced that those who are not in this collection will find their appropriate places in some of the following publications. Records in the monograph "200 Years of General Hospital Maribor" and the monograph we issued on the tenth anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor have information on numerous esteemed physicians who were pioneers in breaking new ground in the development of medical science.
And finally: Gathered records will, in time, become a document that enriches the contents of the history of medicine. This collection represents the first such work in this part of Slovenia.
