Predsednikovo poročilo
Novice, ki ste jih pravkar prejeli so zadnje v tem letu.
Ob tej priliki bi se rad v imenu odbora zahvalil vsem članom in prijateljem za pomoč in podporo preko leta. Moja iskrena hvala pa gre predvsem članom odbora, ki neutrudno vlagajo veliko svojega časa za dobrobit slovenske skupnosti. Predvsem moja hvaležnost Milanu Vrabec in Ernestu Sapač za nešteta popravila, ki jih opravljata. Pravtako našemu neotrudnemu Sergiu Lachi, ki že leta skrbi, da je klubsko dvorišče čisto in urejeno. Našim pridnim kuharcam, ki vsako nedeljo pripravljajo sveze okusne jedi.
Naši klubski prostori so izdani skoraj vsak teden, kar nam prinaša zadovoljivo finančno pomoč, ki nam je vedno bolj potrebna. Zgradba ni več nova, zato vse več popravil zahteva.
V oktobru smo imeli piknik v Sandy Creeku. Na žalost udeležba ni bila tako velika, zato smo se odločili, da ukinemo ta piknik. Odslej naprej bomo prirejali B.B.Q., v klubu na ta vikend (Labour day).
4. novembra smo imeli v klubu pomladansko čiščenje. Skupina pridnih prostovoljcev se je ob 9 uri zbrala v klubu in se nato hitro podala vsak na svojo stran in tako opravila zelo potrebno delo.
Vsako leto v novembru odbor Slovenskega radia organizira B.BQ., namenjen za vzdrževanje radijskih ur. Na ta dan 13. novembra so nas tudi obiskali pevski zbor Planika iz Melbourna -odlično so zapeli.
Sveti Miklavž pa je obljubil, da bo obiskal naše otroke v Slovenskem domu 11. Decembra ob 4. uri popoldan. Vabimo starše in stare starše, da pripeljete svoje otroke oziroma vnuke na to veselo srečanje - Miklavževanje. Pripravili njim bomo "Jumping Castle" od 1 to 5 ure popoldan.

18. decembra klub organizira sedaj že kar tradicionalno božično kosilo. Naproseni ste, da se predčasno prijavite za to kosilo, kdor si ga želi udeležiti. To pa zaradi priprave zadostne količine hrane.
Na Božič, ki je letos na nedeljo, Slovenski dom ne bo odprt.
Silvestrovanje bomo letos praznovali sami člani in prijatelji ob domači slovenski glasbi - DJ. Nekaj let zaporedoma je bila velika dvorana za Silvestrovo izdana drugim, toda nekateri

President's Address
This is the last Newsletter for this year.
On behalf of the Committee I would like to express my gratitude to members and friends for the help and support throughout the year.
My sincere thanks to committee members who dedicated enormous time for the comfort of the Slovenian community. Especially to Milam Vrabec and Ernest Sapač for numerous repairs and maintenance they have done during the year.
Also my gratitude to our fellow member Sergio Lachi for the cleaning and maintaining of the club grounds so that it always looks clean and tidy. Last but not least a big thank you to our dedicated cooks for preparing fresh and tasty meals every Sunday. A big thank you all.
Our clubrooms are hired out almost every week. This is a big financial help to us. The building has started to show its age, therefore it needs more and more repairs and replacement.
In October - Labour Day Weekend we had a picnic in Sandy Creek. Unfortunately the attendance was scarce, therefore we decided not to have the picnic there anymore. From now on we will have a B.B.Q., in the club instead.
On the 4th of November we had a "Working Bee" in the club. The group of dedicated volunteers performed much needed cleaning and this was much appreciated.
Every year in November the Radio Committee organizes a B.B.Q., to raise money for the expenses of running the Slovenian radio program. On that day of 13th November, fellow Slovenians from the choir Planika, Melbourne, visited us and spent a pleasant afternoon in our club entertaining us with their wonderful singing.

St. Nicholas has promised us that he will visit our children on the 11th of December at 4 o'clock. We invite parents and grandparents to bring their children and grandchildren to this occasion -Miklavzevanje. From 1 - 5 pm there will be a "Jumping Castle" available for children to enjoy.
On the 18th of December we will have our traditional Christmas Dinner. I encourage you to book as soon as possible as this event is very popular.
Christmas Day comes on a Sunday this year. For that reason the club will not be open on that Sunday.
This year's New Year's Eve we will celebrate by ourselves - just members and friends. We will have Slovenian music - DJ. As some of you know the last couple of years we celebrated New Year with other communities (big hall was hired out). Some members were not impressed with this idea so we decided to stop hiring the hall out on New Year's Eve.
On behalf of the committee I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and safe New Year 2012.

Time passes really quickly! We realise this most when various annual events come around. And so, too, has our now traditional Radiothon come round once again with great urgency and tested our openness and willingness to help.
The many quick responses really highlighted just how generous we Slovenians are, and because we are generous we are, no doubt, also noble and good people.
For this year's Radiothon we donated a total of $1345. For a small community such as ours, quite a nice sum - no?

Tri sestre Mohor, sedaj živeče v Adelaidi - Albina Komar, Mimi Božanič in Ivanka Kraljev - se spominjajo groznega dogodka pred sedemdeseti leti, ko je Mohorjeva družina osmih otrok morala zapustiti svojo rojstno hišo v Mrzlavi vasi pri Krškem. Namreč 2. novembra leta 1941 je bila cela družina izgnana v Nemčijo. Po nekaj tednih bivanja v kampu, so bili premeščeni na kmetijo, kjer so ostali do konca vojne. Po končani vojni bi se sicer lahko vrnili nazaj, a ker so bile razmere slabe, kmetija porušena, se je družina odločila za emigracijo. Radi bi šli v Ameriko, a ker je bila družina velika, niso bili sprejeti. Potem so se odločili, da emigrirajo v Australijo. Tudi ta jih je zaradi velike družine dvakrat zavrnila. Tretjič so končno uspeli in 19. decembra 1949 leta imigrirali v Avstralijo.
Danes od Mohorjeve velike družine živijo le še 3 zgoraj omenjene sestre.

The three Mohor sisters, now living in Adelaide - Albina Komar, Mimi Božanič and Ivanka Kraljev - remember the terrible event of seventy years ago, when the Mohor family with eight children was forced to leave their family home in the village of Mrzlava near Krško. Namely on 2nd November 1941 the whole family was deported to Germany. After some weeks of living in a camp, they were moved to a farm where they remained until the end of the war. After the end of
the war they could have returned but because conditions were poor, the farm destroyed, the family decided to emigrate. They would have liked to go to America, but because the family was large they were not accepted. They then decided to immigrate to Australia. Australia, too, rejected them twice because they were a large family. They finally succeeded the third time and on 19th December 1949 they immigrated to Australia.
Today, of the large Mohor family, only the above mentioned three sisters remain alive.

SLOVENIA does not have a pure Balkan soul, my guide, Janez, tells me. We are negotiating the traffic on the outskirts of the capital, Ljubljana, where every other car whipping past the drab socialist-era architecture seems to be a BMW, Mercedes or Audi, a sign of the upwardly mobile times.
Janez, who as a teacher of physical education and part-time model seems to be doing pretty well himself, adjusts his Ray-Bans and adds, "People in Slovenia will eat potatoes for a year as long as they can drive an expensive car."
After the Yugoslav wars of the early 1990s, which pulled apart fellow states
Croatia and Serbia, Slovenia emerged in the mid-2000s as the wealthiest and most successful of its Slavic siblings. But this tiny, chicken-shaped country of about 20,000sq km is no featherweight when it comes to natural riches, either.
From the soaring Julian Alps in its northwest to a small but glittering stretch of Adriatic coast, nature informs the national character; the wilderness is to be embraced, explored. Nearly 60 per cent of the land is forested, woven by 27,000km of waterways and stitched together by 10,000km of hiking trails. In the karst landscape, where huge hams are air-dried among fragrant black pines to make the local prosciutto, more than 9000 caves await discovery.
The mountains, patrolled by Europe's healthiest population of brown bears, beckon tourists and Slovenians alike, as do individual pursuits such as skiing, hiking, hunting, cycling and canyoning. It's no accident that the first person to ski down Everest was a Slovenian. Or that one of the country's most famous sportsmen is ultra swimmer Martin Strel, who has windmilled his way down the lengths of some of world's greatest rivers, including the Danube, the Amazon and the Yangtze.
Slovenia's most famous body of water is Lake Bled in the north, not far from the Austrian border. Impossibly postcard-pretty and overlooked by a dramatic clifftop castle presently celebrating 1000 years of history, the dazzling lake favoured by swimmers and international rowers is one of the country's biggest tourist drawcards. Though it's populated by catfish, including a legendary behemoth called Max, no self-respecting Slovenian would angle here when there are trout to be pulled from the surrounding mountain rivers.
This spectacular region of tumbling forests and sheer limestone cliffs was a favourite playground of socialist leader Marshal Tito and his cronies, who presided over the country until his death in 1980. Tito's old lakeside summer residence, Vila Bled, is now an upmarket hotel and restaurant featuring the original 1950s furniture, where lunch on the terrace one late summer's day includes a tender fillet of mouflon, or wild sheep, locally hunted and brought to our table by white-gloved waiters.
To the south, near the centre of Slovenia, the capital city is compact and easily explored, like the country itself. Legend
has it that Ljubljana was founded by the Argonauts as they raced the Golden Fleece to the coast down the Ljubljanica River, but what's certain is the Romans settled here in the 1st century AD. The city retains something of a Mediterranean flavour, with its pretty bridges, pedestrian-friendly centre, bustling produce markets and riverside restaurants.
About 270,000 of Slovenia's population of two million live in Ljubljana, which feels more like a laid-back university town than a bustling capital. It's a place of peaceful streets and cafe culture, its beatnik vibe reinforced by a national passion for art and literature. A statue of the national poet France Prešeren, to the Slovenians as Dante is to the Italians, dominates a square bearing his name, while down by the river bookish types lounge on the grass at an outdoor library set up under the trees.
Dominating the skyline is the 16th-century Ljubljana Castle, occupying a rugged outcrop just south of Staro Mesto, or the Old Town, which is laid out along medieval lines, although the buildings here are mostly baroque, built after the city was razed by a devastating earthquake in 1511.
A funicular or several pathways take you up towards the castle's ramparts, which house an art gallery and an exhibition of Slovenian history that takes visitors from prehistory to the present. Ljubljana melds the old and new with ease. Although the city's cathedral, the Church of St Nicholas, built by Andrea Pozzo from 1701 to 1706, contains works by Italian masters such as Robba, it's the set of modern bronze doors that is immediately arresting, depicting the country's Catholic past, from the first words penned in Slovenian by a monk to a relief of pope John Paul II.
Sipping a cappuccino at a fashionable cafe one morning, I watch another happy mix of generations: a black-clad matron with a beautiful saluki shooting the breeze with a punky-looking girl clutching a terrier in a fancy pink collar. The unmistakable smell of pot drifts down an alleyway. Pampered dogs are as important as owning a premium set of wheels, it seems.
Ljubljana owes much of this character to its most famous son, the architect Jože Plečnik, who rebuilt and reimagined the city between the two world wars, following another catastrophic quake in 4
1895. His unconventional approach fused a variety of architectural styles and is best seen in the National University Library with its irregular brick and stone facade, the upper windows designed to look like books.
Plečnik redeveloped the riverfront where, so the story goes, he planted weeping willows to represent women bent over, washing their clothes, and the connection of the city's residents to the water. Whatever the truth, there's no doubting the tie that people feel to the Ljubljanica.
Fuelled by sips of syrupy blueberry brandy, I embark on a short cruise down the river, passing under Butchers Bridge, where controversy has been stirred by clusters of grotesque sculptures by Jakov Brdar, and which couples have festooned with padlocks before tossing the keys into the water. Further downstream, the passage of our boat raises a madly paddling otter and glimpses of produce gardens at the edge of the Barja marshlands, home to hundreds of bird and butterfly species.

There are more boats at the ancient town of Piran, which juts out from Slovenia's 46km stretch of coastline, not far from the Italian port city of Trieste. Here fishing boats jockey for position with luxury yachts, many owned by the Slovenian elite with holiday homes in the neighbouring spa town of Portorož.

Ruled by the Venetians from the 13 th century until 1797, Piran has retained a medieval loveliness, its houses in dusky pinks, blues and yellows adorned with wrought-iron balustrades. It looks picturesque but I am told there's a sinister dichotomy here, the area being perfectly located for drug smugglers plying the Adriatic. "It's like a Potemkin village,"
one local tells me, rather darkly. "Nice on the outside but inside you'll find those on the social edge."
I walk up a flagstone path to the baroque Church of St Peter, which is huge and white and nearly always empty, except today when locals in their Sunday-best tight white pants and shiny, wedge-heeled sandals are hastening to the weekly service. From up here you can see Trieste, and on a good day the Dolomites. Down below in the dappled water, scuba divers are blowing bubbles while yachts race each other across the horizon.
The high-grade salt that historically sustained the region is still produced at the ancient Secovlje salt pans just down the road. A proportion of it is made using the 14th-century methods that were finally abandoned on a commercial scale only in 1968.
These days, the salt pans also serve as a natural habitat for 295 types of bird, 500 butterfly species, dragonflies, turtles and lizards, which wildlife fanatics wielding binoculars stalk through the strange and empty white landscape. A salty Eden, perhaps, but one with a character perfectly in keeping with the rest of this barely tamed country.

Medicare cover for visitors to Australia from Slovenia
Overview
The Australian Government has signed a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with the government of Slovenia.
If you applied for or received Subclass Visa 410 (Retiree Visa) prior to 1 December 1998 you may apply to participate in the Medicare program under the RHCA of your home country of Slovenia. If you applied for Subclass Visa 410 on or after 1 December 1998 you are not eligible for enrolment in the Medicare program and are not eligible under the RHCA.
Period of cover
Visitors from Slovenia require their European Health Insurance card to enrol in Medicare. They are eligible until the expiry date indicated on the card, or to
the length of their authorised stay in Australia if earlier.
Access to cover
Reciprocal health care agreements cover treatment that is medically necessary. Medically necessary treatment means any ill-health or injury which occurs while you are in Australia and requires treatment before you return home.
If you are in Australia on a student visa from Slovenia you are covered by Medicare. It is a condition of the visa that all students take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Your entitlements
As a resident of Slovenia you are entitled to the following for any ill-health or injury requiring treatment while in Australia:
•	free treatment as a public inpatient or outpatient in a public hospital
•	subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
•	Medicare benefits for out-of-hospital medical treatment provided by doctors through private surgeries and community health centres.
Enrolling in Medicare
If you will be receiving treatment you can enrol at Medicare offices throughout Australia. If you receive treatment before you enrol, Medicare benefits will be back paid for eligible visitors.
To enrol in Medicare you will need:
•	your passport with a valid visa
•	to provide, in some cases, identification showing you are enrolled in your country's national health scheme.
If your application to enrol in Medicare is approved, you will receive an Australian reciprocal health care card in the mail.
Treatment outside a hospital
You can receive medical treatment through private doctors' surgeries and community health centres. Doctors at these practices charge for their services in one of the following ways:
The doctor bills Medicare directly
You will be asked to show your reciprocal health care card and sign a completed Medicare bulk bill form after
seeing the doctor. You will not need to pay anything and will not need to make a claim from Medicare. Please note that not all Australian doctors in private practice bulk bill.
The doctor gives you a bill
Doctors who do not bulk bill will require you to pay the amount at the time of consultation. In this case you can pay the full bill on the spot or lodge the unpaid bill with Medicare.
To pay the full bill on the spot you can:
•	claim back your benefit in person at a Medicare office
•	send a completed Medicare claim form, the original doctor's bill and your receipt for the full amount of the bill to Medicare (GPO Box 9822 in your capital city). Medicare will post a cheque to your last registered address made payable to you to cover Medicare's portion of the bill
•	have your claim processed electronically from your doctor's practice and have your benefit paid directly into your bank or credit union account by electronic funds transfer, where available.
To lodge your unpaid bill you need to:
•	take the unpaid bill together with a completed claim form to a Medicare office, or send it to Medicare by mail to the address shown below. Medicare will send a cheque to your address made payable to the doctor.
•	you will be required to take the cheque to your doctor and pay the difference between the Medicare benefit and the total fee charged by the doctor.
Hospital treatment
If you are treated as a public patient in a public hospital for medically necessary treatment, the treatment is free. Simply show your passport or reciprocal health care card to staff when you arrive at the hospital.
If you elect to be treated as a private patient in a public hospital or as a private patient in a private hospital for medically necessary treatment, you will be charged for both medical treatment and accommodation. These fees cannot be claimed from Medicare.
Medical services not covered by Medicare
Medicare will not cover:
•	medicines not subsidised under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
•	dental work and allied health services
•	treatment arranged before your visit to Australia
•	accommodation and medical treatment in a private hospital
•	accommodation and medical treatment as a private patient in a public hospital.
Ancillary services not covered
Medicare does not cover such things as:
•	private patient hospital costs (for example, theatre fees or accommodation)
•	dental examinations and treatment (except specified items introduced for allied health services as part of the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program
•	ambulance services
•	home nursing
•	physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, eye therapy, chiropractic services, podiatry or psychology (except specified items introduced for allied health services as part of the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program
•	acupuncture (unless part of a doctor's consultation)
•	glasses and contact lenses
•	hearing aids and other appliances
•	the cost of prostheses
•	medical costs for which someone else is responsible (for example a compensation insurer, an employer, a government or government authority)
•	medical services which are not clinically necessary
•	surgery solely for cosmetic reasons
•	examinations for life insurance, superannuation or membership of a friendly society
•	eye therapy

Na lestvici najbolj zdravih ekonomij se je Slovenija uvrstila za Estonijo, Luksemburgom, Nemčijo in Nizozemsko. Zdravje gospodarstev je lizbonski svet za konkurenčnost preverjal s štirimi kazalniki: trendom gospodarske rasti, konkurenčnostjo posamezne ekonomije, njeno fiskalno vzdržnostjo in odpornostjo proti zunanjim vplivom. Slovenija se je najbolje izkazala pri merilu o odpornosti proti zunanjim vplivom. Svet je hkrati objavil še oceno o napredku pri prilagajanju ekonomij evroobmočja - na tej lestvici je Sloveniji dodelil precej slabše, 11. mesto. Vladni urad za informiranje, ki je medije opozoril na novico, smo prosili za mnenje, ali bodo dobre ocene Sloveniji pomagale tudi do boljših ocen mednarodnih bonitetnih družb, ki so se poslabšale po zavrnitvi pokojninske reforme na referendumu. »Verjetno bi bilo preveč optimistično, če bi ob objavi tega poročila lizbonskega sveta pričakovali, da bodo neodvisne bonitetne hiše Sloveniji na podlagi dobljenih ocen zvišale bonitetne ocene. Vsekakor smo z oceno sveta zelo zadovoljni, ker kaže, da so bili uspešni tudi nekateri ukrepi vlade, in še posebno, da je slovensko gospodarstvo zdravo, pripravljeno na rast, izvozno usmerjeno in fiskalno vzdržno,« odgovarjajo iz vladnega urada za informiranje.
Na Gregorčičevi ulici ob tem poudarjajo, da je lizbonski svet ugledni evropski »think-tank«, zato so prepričani, da bodo njihovo analizo natančno proučili tudi v bonitetnih hišah: »Ali bo to vplivalo na njihov rating Slovenije, je seveda stvar presoje bonitetnih hiš. Analiza vsekakor
kaže, da si slovensko gospodarstvo morda zasluži boljšo oceno, kot jo pogosto slišimo, vemo pa, da na ocene bonitetnih hiš vplivajo še številni drugi dejavniki.«
Rogaska Launches Crystalware Line at Macy's
New York - Glassworks Steklarna Rogaska and US businessman Donald Trump officially launched the sale of a line of crystal products at Macy's department store in New York on Wednesday. The collection of Rogaska's crystalware has been on sale there for the Trump Home brand since May. Trump said in October, when the cooperation was presented to the media, that his wife Melania, who comes from Slovenia, loved the products and that he did not have much choice in this respect. He added that the line of crystal products was bound to reach "fantastic success".
Rogaska USA boss Bostjan Leskovar said yesterday that the initial sales figures at Macy's were a pleasant surprise. Internet sales were especially good, accounting for some 40% of revenues, according to the Rogaska USA boss. He said the company had been present on the US market for over 50 years. "Surveys show that every fifth crystal item of the highest price range sold in the US is ours. In the past years we have been working on boosting the sales of our own brand." "We have wanted to get into Macy's and by teaming up with Trump were able to do that faster and in a larger scope," said Leskovar. Other items produced by Rogaska glassworks are already on sale at Macy's but not under its own brand.

told the STA that the glassworks sold some 44% of its products in the US. The company's total revenues amount to some EUR 37m.
Rogaska's products are on sale at 20 of the biggest Macy's departments stores across the US, according to Leskovar, who said the goal was to get into at least 200 stores.
Recently, Rogaska also teamed up with Kathy Ireland, a lifestyle designer, to produce a crystal stemware and barware collection.
Kako smo dobili božične simbole?
Kdaj je bila poslana prva božična voščilnica? Od kod prihaja božično drevesce? Zakaj se morate poljubiti pod belo omelo? Preberite nekaj o simbolih mnogim najljubšega praznika v letu. Božič je tradicionalni praznik, ki ga praznujemo 25. decembra. Praznovanje sicer izvira že iz predkrščanskih časov -različna ljudstva so na ta dan praznovala začetek zimskega solsticija, ko se dan ponovno začne daljšati. Ta poganski praznik, ki simbolizira zmago dobrega nad zlim, je krščanska cerkev nato pokristjanila in od takrat se z njim spominjamo Jezusovega rojstva.
Za božični čas je značilno praznovanje, veselje in tudi obdarovanje. Je pa ob božiču prisotno tudi ogromno simbolov -za vas smo izpostavili pet najpogostejših.
Božično drevesce
Smrečice so v zimskem času pogosto uporabljala že poganska ljudstva, tradicija okraševanja božične smrečice kot jo poznamo danes, pa naj bi se začela v 16. stoletju v Nemčiji.
Zimzeleno drevesce predstavlja ogenj življenja, ki ne ugasne niti v najtežjih časih. Simbolizira življenje in upanje, v krščanski veri pa predstavlja tudi Jezusovo rojstvo.
Namesto okraskov kot jih poznamo danes, so nanjo v preteklosti obesili jabolka, ki so predstavljala zgodbo Adama in Eve v rajskem vrtu. Pozneje so dodali še rože, bombone, barvni papir in tudi sveče, ki naj bi ponazorile betlehemske zvezde.
Od Nemcev prevzeto božično drevo se na Slovenskem prvič omenja leta 1861 v Slomškovih Drobtinicah: "Na osvetljeni smreki so visela zlata jabolka, orehi, rožiči in mnogo drugih dobrih stvari. Pod
drevesom pa so ležale kape, robeci, podperti in tudi čevlji in oblačila ..."
Jaslice
Jaslice naj bi nadomestile stare navade krašenja doma z zimzelenim zelenjem še iz predkrščanskih časov. Na postavljanje jaslic po domovih, kakršne poznamo danes, pa so zagotovo vplivale jaslice po župnijskih in samostanskih cerkvah. Gre za upodobitev betlehemskega dogodka, natančneje Jezusovega rojstva, kot sta ga v svojih evangelijih opisala apostola Marko in Luka.
Omenjeni običaj je bil priljubljen predvsem v nemških alpskih deželah, pritegnil je pa tudi slovenskega človeka. Slovenci smo prve jaslice dobili leta 1644 v Ljubljani, postavili pa so jih jezuiti.
V izrazu stvarnosti so jaslice prikaz Jezusovega rojstva v mrazu, uboštvu in nerazumevanju ljudi na eni in božje pomoči na drugi strani. Simbolno pa izražajo odrešenje in nas vabijo k miru in medsebojni ljubezni, svetu pa sporočajo o novem roj stvu in upanju.
Božiček
Božiček je mitološka osebnost, ki v noči na božič z darili obdaruje pridne otroke. Znano je, da je v Evropi otroke v decembru obdaroval sveti Nikolaj, njegov praznik je 6. december. Nizozemski priseljenci so tradicijo praznovanja prenesli v Združene države Amerike in z mešanjem drugih kultur se je rodil novi dobri mož - Božiček.
Leta 1822 je Clement C. Moore napisal pesem z naslovom Noč pred božičem (The Night Before Christmas) in to je bil prvi opis moža v rdečem, kot ga poznamo še danes:
... Imel je širok obraz in majhen okrogel trebuh,
ki se je kot polna skleda želeja zatresel, ko se je smejal.
Bil je debelušen in okrogel, pravi veseli stari škrat,
in ko sem ga videl, sem se smejal. Le majhen pomežik in vedel sem, da me ni več strah.
Slovenci nekaj časa Božička, kot je opisan v pesmi, sploh nismo poznali. Na božič smo namreč praznovali Jezusovo rojstvo in iz tega tudi izvira ime Božiček (Mali Bog). Ameriška oblika Božička, ki je priljubljen predvsem med otroki, je k nam prišla šele pozneje.
Bela omela
Tudi belo omelo so pri praznovanju uporabljala že poganska ljudstva. Rastlina je bila priljubljena predvsem zaradi dejstva, da ostane zelena čez celo zimo. Starodavni Kelti so verjeli, da ima omelo magično zdravilno moč zdravljenja, uporabljali so ga kot protistrup, za zdravljenje neplodnosti in se z njim branili zlobnih duhov. Rimljani so bili prepričani, da bosta sovražnika, ki se srečata pod omelo, odložila svoje orožje in se objela - tako je omelo postalo tudi simbol miru.
Skandinavci so omelo povezovali z boginjo ljubezni Friggo in iz tega po predvidevanjih izhaja mit o poljubljanju podnjo. Namreč, tisti, ki se poljubi pod belo omelo, bo v prihajajočem letu imel obilo sreče in veselja.
Božične voščilnice
Voščilnice so izmed vseh opisanih spremljevalcev božiča tiste z najmlajšo tradicijo. Prvo božično voščilnico naj bi ustvaril Anglež Henry Cole, direktor londonskega muzeja, ki je bil v času praznikov leta 1843 tako obremenjen, da je namesto obiskovanja prijateljem naredil prav posebno voščilo. Voščilnice je ilustriral John Calcott Horsley, izdelane pa so bile iz trikrat prepognjenega kartonastega papirja, na katerem je bila ilustracija družine, ki uživa v praznovanju. Na kartici je bilo napisano tudi sporočilo Vesel božič in srečno novo leto vam vsem.
Sprva so bile voščilnice preproste, ilustrirane z verskimi ali zimskimi motivi, pozneje pa so jih na zahtevo potrošnikov začeli tudi bolj okraševati. Da na ta način najbližjim zaželimo lepe praznike, je tako še razmeroma mlad običaj, kljub temu pa ob božiču še kako prisoten.

Umrl je narodno-zabavni glasbenik Lojze Slak

V 80. letu starosti je za posledicami kostnega raka umrl legendarni slovenski narodno-zabavni glasbenik Lojze Slak.
Lojze Slak je bil legenda slovenske narodno-zabavne glasbe, mojster diatonične harmonike, avtor večine skladb in vodja skupine Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka. Bil je tudi navdušen planinec, zelo rad pa se je ukvarjal tudi s svojim vinogradom na Trški gori, kjer je prideloval sortni cviček.
Slak je že več kot pol stoletja legenda slovenske narodno-zabavne glasbe, mojster diatonične harmonike, avtor mnogih zimzelenih skladb in vodja skupine Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka. "Svoje" glasbilo, diatonično harmoniko, je izpopolnil s šestim gumbom za igranje basov in gumbom za desno roko.
S harmoniko se je spoznal pri stricu
Lojze Slak se je rodil 23. julija 1932 v vasi Jordankal blizu Mirne Peči na Dolenjskem. Mladost je preživel pri stari mami na Malem Kalu, saj je družina Slak štela deset otrok. Zaradi mamine bolezni je moral Slak od doma, še preden je dopolnil prvo leto življenja, kar je usodno vplivalo na njegovo življenje in kariero.
Pri stricu Ludviku se je namreč prvič spoznal z diatonično harmoniko, s katero je igral po vaških slavjih, mladega Lojzeta pa je glasbilo povsem prevzelo.
"Ohceti so najboljša šola"
Še preden je prvič šel v šolo, je Lojze Slak znal na harmoniko odigrati že več kot dvanajst pesmi, s petnajstimi leti je kot samostojni godec prvič igral na "ohceti". V desetih letih je igral na več kot sto porokah in kasneje dejal, da so bile "ohceti njegova najboljša glasbena šola".
Prelomno leto v njegovi karieri je bilo 1957, ko je prvič nastopil kot samostojni harmonikar na javni radijski oddaji Pokaži, kaj znaš!, na kateri je navdušil tako strokovno javnost kot radijsko občinstvo. Dve leti kasneje je ansambel bratov Slak - v kvartetu je brat Tone igral trobento, Matija klarinet, Stane bas, Lojze pa harmoniko, skupaj pa so v tej zasedbi bratje igrali dobra tri leta. Dva od bratov sta morala k vojakom, zato je ansambel v tej postavi prenehal delovati. Lojze je hitro poiskal tri pevce in se prijavil na tekmovanje novih ansamblov, ki je potekalo na Gospodarskem razstavišču v Ljubljani, in skladba Domači vasici je postala njegova prva večja uspešnica.

S svojim ansamblom je Lojze Slak slovensko narodno-zabavno glasbo ponesel tudi v tujino, v zadnjih letih pa jo je z nepričakovanimi potezami, kot so bili nastopi z rockovsko skupino Big Foot Mama, skušal približati tudi mlajšim poslušalcem. Njegove skladbe, med katerimi je več ponarodelih, so izšle na več kot sto zvočnih posnetkih. Narodno-zabavno glasbeno zakladnico je Slak obogatil z več kot petsto izvirnimi vižami in mnogimi odličnimi besedili, njegovo glasbeno smer pa posnema več sto skupin doma in v tujini.
Svojo glasbo je skušal približati mladim
Leta 1964 je Lojze na enem od nastopov po radiu Ljubljana spoznal pevsko skupino Fantje s Praprotna. Med njimi je preskočila glasbena iskrica in nastal je eden slovenskih najbolj priznanih in priljubljenih narodno-zabavnih ansamblov - Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka, s katerim je ljubitelje narodno-zabavne glasbe navduševal skoraj pol stoletja.
Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka je svoj zadnji okrogli jubilej praznoval leta 2004 v Hali Tivoli v Ljubljani. Ob praznovanju 40-letnice delovanja, so se jim kot gostje pridružili tudi Trebanjska godba, Godalni orkester, Čuki, Igor in Zlati zvoki, Slapovi, Nuša Derenda in Grega Avsenik.

Musician Lojze Slak Dies

Lojze Slak, one of Slovenia's most popular folk music accordionists and bandleaders who also helped popularise the Alpine style of polka music outside Slovenia, died at the age of 79.
Slak was born on 23 July, 1932 in the SE village of Jordankal in the Dolenjsko region. For most of his youth, he lived at his grandmother's, where he spent a lot of time with his uncle, a well known button box player.
Slak toured Slovenian communities abroad including Australia in 1972. His music enriched the lives of Slovenian emigrants with his innovative and refreshing songwriting channeled through his diatonic accordion and the tightly blending vocal harmonies of his singers.
Lojze Slak will be sadly missed, but his music will outlive many a generation.

Narodno-zabavne vode je zapustil še en uspešen glasbenik, in sicer Tone Kmetec, ki se ga bomo spominjali po legendarnih vižah, kot so Ljubica, lahko noč, Mami, oj mami, Stara domačija ter številne druge.
Ansambel Toneta Kmetca, ki ga je ustanovil Tone Kmetec, je nastal pred več kot 40 leti, deloval pa je predvsem na Štajerskem.

At fifteen years of age, Lojze began playing the accordion as a solo performer at weddings. For the next decade or so, he played at a number of weddings, occasionally with a group of musicians that became known as the Lojze Slak Trio.
A significant change in his life and career came in 1957, as he appeared on a radio talent show called "Pokazi, kaj znas!", at which he impressed the professional musicians and the general public. In 1964, during a performance on the Ljubljana radio, he met the singing group "Fantje s Praprotna" (Boys from Praprotno), which give birth to one of Slovenia's best known and most influential musical ensembles. In his later years, Slak also tried to bring the folk music closer to the young generations by working with the rock band Big Foot Mama. His 400 original music works and numerous other adaptations made during his lifelong career include a number of hits, like "Raj pod Triglavom" (Paradise under Triglav) and "Mama".
Tone Kmetec
Na začetku sta v ansamblu pela Marija Matjašič in Miro Makoter, pozneje pa se mu je pridružila Marija Vajda Kmetec in nadaljevala v duetu z Mirom Makoteijem. Sredi sedemdesetih let je pevca Mira Makoterja zamenjal Ivan Švajgl, ansambel pa se je odpravil na prvo gostovanje v Kanado in Ameriko. Zaradi uspešnih nastopov doma ter v tujini, predvsem v Avstriji in Nemčiji, je ansambel še enkrat ponovil turnejo čez lužo.
Ansambel Toneta Kmetca je prenehal nastopati v poznih devetdesetih letih. Posnetke uspešnega ansambla pa še danes slišimo na radijskih postajah.

AT least my children will know where sausages really come from.
I like visiting country butchers and seeing signs outside their shops saying "Fresh Locally Killed Meat" and "Contract Killing: Call Gary" on such and such a mobile number. Inside it smells authentic because you're still
likely to get a butcher's hook of a carcass hanging on one.
But their big city cousins are at risk of becoming real-life versions of Kel Knight from Kath and Kim, who's in search of the perfect gourmet sausage and is a "purveyor of fine meats". They're forever marinating their cuts in honey and soy, ginger and garlic, chilli and lemon grass, or rolling them in bread crumbs, offering an array of creations on Glad Wrapped stainless steel trays. The supermarkets are the same, just less personal and with a lot more polystyrene.
Could this help explain why we're so upset by the recent goings on in Indonesia? The cruelty was undeniable but the outpouring of outrage may have had a lot to do with our dramatic realisation that meat is more than just a product in a shop. It comes from animals we kill. Regardless of how it's done, it's a bloody business. We may also have a gnawing suspicion that animals are aware of what's going on, even at the best abattoirs.
As a rural reporter I visited enough abattoirs to tell you the smell of fear is as real as the smell of blood. One pig farmer even told me his sows always started squealing when they heard the truck pull up to take their offspring to the meatworks. He said they knew it was a one-way trip. Once I found this out I could have become a vegetarian or blocked out what I knew, but I decided to be more aware of the moral issue involved.
My dad often killed and prepared pigeons and poultry for our table at home and never wasted meat. My father's grandparents were first-generation Silesian settlers and had a farm at Dry Creek. He told me his earliest memory was watching a pig being killed. The entire animal was used. Even the pig's bladder was blown up and tied off so he could use it as a football. That's a Kinder surprise for a four-year-old.
So when I had a chance to take my children to a Slovenian sausage-making session one Saturday afternoon recently I jumped at it. As we walked through the front door we were hit with the unmistakable aroma of fresh flesh. The pig meat was cut from the bone in chunks, then mixed with garlic, pepper and salt, and a few splashes of plum-flavoured Slivovka, all in a baby bath on a plastic-covered trestle table.
Children were running around the kitchen laughing and then stopping to join in this ancient mid-winter ritual. One was helping mix the meat. Another was operating the grinding machine and feeding the intestines over a funnel where the sausage mince was extruded. At the other end of the table another group of children and adults was twisting and tying the long sausage into usable lengths.
Overseeing it all was the matriarch, seated on a massive yellow esky. Every now and again she'd rise to put a few more kilos of sausages inside. They'd soon be be dried and smoked by her eldest son and eventually they'd be shared.
It felt good to be part of a process that had hardly changed in hundreds, if not thousands of years. I was especially pleased that although my children will never know their grandfather, or his grandparents, they at least, like them, will know where sausages really come from.

Na Bledu izdelali že 11 milijonov originalnih kremšnit

Bled - Blejsko kremno rezino je mogoče dobiti v skoraj vsaki slaščičarni in kavarni po Sloveniji, originalne kremšnite po receptu iz leta 1953 pa izdelujejo le v slaščičarski delavnici blejskega hotela Park.
V tej delavnici so izdelali že 11 milijonov kremnih rezin, kar bodo prihodnjo soboto tudi proslavili.
Praznovanje bo potekalo 8. oktobra ob 16. ure dalje pred Restavracijo in kavarno Park. Slaščičarji hotela Park pa bodo ta dan izdelali simbolično enajstmilijonto kremno rezino, v katero bodo skrili drobno presenečenje. V tem času bodo kremne rezine na voljo po 1 evro, v Sava Hotelih Bled pa bodo ves prihodek od prodaje namenili za brezplačno letovanje blejskih otrok iz socialno šibkih družin. Kremne rezine je dandanes mogoče dobiti po vsej Sloveniji, vendar pa jih je po originalnem receptu nekdanjega vodje slaščičarske delavnice Ištvana Lukačevica izdelujejo le na Bledu. Slaščičarski mojster, ki se je v poznih 40. letih prejšnjega stoletja iz Vojvodine z družino preselil na Bled, je leta 1953 kot vodja slaščičarske delavnice v starem hotelu Park sestavil recept za danes znamenito kremno rezino. Po njegovem izročilu jo še danes pripravljajo Parkovi slaščičarji.
Lukačevic je najprej zamesil masleno testo, ga sedemkrat prepognil in pustil počivati do naslednjega jutra, potem ga je spekel in ohladil. Iz naravnih sestavin je naredil jajčno kremo, jo med mešanjem pustil vreti sedem minut in vroči dodal sneg trdo stepenih beljakov ter rumeno maso prevrnil na pečeno ploščo. Ko se je kremna rezina popolnoma ohladila, je nanjo naložil stepeno sladko smetano in jo prekril še z drugo plastjo maslenega testa. Vse skupaj je potresel z mletim vanilijevim sladkorjem in ploščo razrezal na dimenzije sedem krat sedem centimetrov.
Originalna blejska kremna rezina zaščitena
Družba Sava Hoteli Bled je blagovno znamko Originalna blejska kremna rezina v preteklih letih uspela zaščititi pri Uradu RS za intelektualno lastnino, letos pa je pridobila tudi registracijo, ki velja na celotnem območju EU in Hrvaške. Od letošnjega septembra jih je mogoče kupiti tudi v blejskih hotelih Kompas in Lovec, so sporočili iz Sava hotelov Bled, kjer so pred dvema letoma praznovali desetmilijonto kremno rezino. To
pomeni, da jih vsako leto prodajo okrog pol milijona.
Nanos Cheese Receives Protected Designation of Origin Label

Brussels - The Nanos cheese has become the sixth Slovenian food product to receive protected geographical status in the EU. The cheese that has been produced on the Nanos plateau (W) since the 16th century received the protected designation of origin label.

The milk used for Nanos cheese is very high in beta carotene, therefore the cheese has an intensive yellow colour. Due to a specific microflora in the air of the wine region where the ripening facilities are located, the cheese has a characteristic piquant flavour. The quality of the feed in the production area of Nanos cheese is especially fine due to the Mediterranean and continental climate influences and the typical Kras soil.
Today, Nanos cheese is made with cow's milk, but before World War II it was made exclusively from sheep's milk.
After the war, the number of sheep on the plateau dropped significantly. According to some sources, Nanos cheese made of sheep's milk was last available in 1954 in the city of Trieste, Italy. The production of Nanos cheese was resumed in 1986 by the Mlekarna Vipava dairy.
The decree introducing the protected designation of origin label was published in the EU Official Gazette by the European Commission.
For a cheese to receive the protected designation of origin label, all phases of cheese production need to take place in the specific geographic area, as the quality and characteristics of the product
result from specific influences of a certain area.
Apart from Nanos cheese, five other food products have already received one of the three EU protected geographical status labels.
The list contains extra virgin olive oil from the Slovenian Istra (SW) region, prleska tunka cured meat stored in minced lard from the region of Prlekija (NE), belokranjska pogaca, a type of bread typical of the SE region of Bela krajina, idrijski zlikrofi dumplings from Idria region (W) and prekmurska gibanica, sweet layered pastry from Prekmuije (NE).

The five-game final yesterday, against Australia's Andrew Fisher, 44, had been neck and neck, with both players delivering "bingos", where they play all the letters from their rack at once to get a bonus of 50 points.
The audience at the Hilton Hotel in Warsaw, Poland, saw Richards, also 44, surge ahead in the fifth and final game with "omnified" - the state of being all-comprehensive - for 95 points and £13 000.
And the secret of Richards' success? "I just learn all the words." Easy as ABC.
Minister Žekš: Reformation Laid Foundations to
Slovenian Nation

Krško - Addressing the main ceremony ahead of Reformation Day in Krško on Friday, Culture Minister Boštjan Žekš said the Reformation and Protestant movement laid the foundation for not only the Slovenian literature but also the Slovenian state.
"Slovenian Protestants did an enormous job, they gave us the first printed books in Slovenian and laid the foundations to present-day Slovenian cultural identity," the minister told the ceremony, which also saw President Danilo Tuerk and several ministers in attendance.
The first book in Slovenian, "Cathecism", was written in 1550 by Primož Trubar (1508-1586), the central figure of Slovenian Protestantism. A religious, political and cultural movement, Reformation also gave Slovenians the first translation of the Bible and the first spelling manual.
According to Žekš, the Reformation period was a milestone in the development of the Slovenian nation, which eventually lead to independence twenty years ago.
However, at the same time this is a period of the first major division among the Slovenians, the division to Evangelicalism and Catholicism, he noted.
Saying that many other divisions followed during the WWII and after the 1991 independence, the minister noticed that sometimes "we feel that these divisions are unique to Slovenians and that they obstruct our progress, but I believe this is not true". All nations have struggled with divisions in the past and the unity "we sometimes dream of is illusion", he said.
Žekš praised protestant values, which he said emphasised the importance of an individual, their freedom and responsibility, which is especially important in the time of crisis, when everyone must carry their share of burden.

I would like to share an experience with you; has to do with drinking and driving. As you may be aware, some of us have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from a night out. Well I for one have done something about it. The other night I was out for a dinner and drinks with friends. After having far too
much to drink, and knowing full well I was wasted, I did something I've never done before, I took a bus home. I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before.
I don't want to brag or make anyone jealous or anything, but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school.

Bostjan Sifrar, a successful businessman who has made a fortune on patented toothpaste tube lids, received the Entrepreneur of 2011 award in Ljubljana on Wednesday. Sifrar took over the Skofja Loka-based company SIBO G from his father back in 1993 and developed it into a booming business. The award handed out for the 21st time by the business magazine Podjetnik and the Slovenian Chamber of Trade Crafts and Small Business (OZS) went to a man who turned a small family-run workshop into a global business, according to a press release from OZS.
Study Shows Slovenia Ranking High in Economic Complexity

Boston - A study by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranks Slovenia 10th in terms of economic complexity, a gauge, the authors say, of countries' productive knowledge.
The 128-country list is topped by Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Singapore, the Czech Republic and the UK, according to the recently released "The Atlas of Economic Complexity: Mapping Paths to Prosperity".
The index of economic complexity is an attempt to show how much know-how an economy has and how efficiently it is integrated. This in turn affects the economy's products, which the authors call "productive knowledge".
Slovenian Ultralight Aircraft Wins National Award Oct 21
Pipistrel, an ultralight aircraft manufacturer in Slovenia has received the Golden Order for Services, the highest civil award in the country.

Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk, while bestowing the award, hailed Slovenia as "one of the technological superpowers."
"Pipistrel's success is the result of the work of top experts, who successfully transfer the newest findings to practice and enrich it with their innovations, create new knowledge and make breakthroughs," said the President.
Established in 1987, Pipistrel was the first private aircraft producer in former Yugoslavia.
After having won the renowned NASA Personal Air Vehicle in 2007, NASA General Aviation Technology in 2008, it won the 2011 NASA CAFÉ Green Flight Challenge with US$1.35 in prize money
from NASA, the largest prize in aviation history.
The Golden Order for Services is conferred for exceptional services for Slovenia in the civil, diplomatic and international and military or security services.
