S. van Marie Twente University o f Technology Library Enschede, The Netherlands In the introduction some definitions on CCCD (Co-operative Coor dinated Collection Development) will be given as well as some examples of relevant developments in this field. The introduction will include a critical review of the following aspects of CCCD: □ 1. reasons or motivation to start with CCCD; □ 2. critical preconditions for effective CCCD; □ 3. procedures and tools to be developed to start and maintain a CCCD-program; □ 4. CCCD: disadvantages/drawbacks; □ 5. CCCD:advantages/benefits. After this general approach the Dutch situation will be reviewed. A first step towards CCCD was taken in 1974 when a governmental committee recommended a coordinated additional provision for foreign scientific literature. In 1977 a special committee was installed to deal with the problems of additional collection development. 24 Knjižnica. Tematska Sl. IA TU L 1989
