Po mnenju ameriškega ko-respondenta C. The article is entitled “What Hitler Did to My Friends.” It tells the story of two young people in Slovenia, a son of the poet Oton Zupančič and his betrothed, Rozha Ravnikar, daughter of a prominent Ljubljana lawyer. Adamic’s original title, which was changed by the editors of SEP, was “Love in Slovenia.” In a longer, more detailed version the story will appear under that title as the opening chapter of the new book “My Native Land,” which Adamic recently completed. It will be published this summer or early in the fall by Harper & Brothers of New York. The Saturday Evening Post has three and a half million subscribers. Each copy is said to be read by about five people. The readers of this newspaper can help to raise that average this week. It is recommended that every Slovenian immigrant bring this story by Adamic as published in the Saturday Evening Post to the attention of at least ten people in the town in which he lives. Jt is, the best way to make the plight of Slovenia under German and Italian occupation known to Americans, and to increase the determination of the people of the United States to not only win the war but to participate in the postwar task of bringing about a better world. Lodge 61, AFU Members Invited to attend Next Meeting The members of Lodge No. 61, AFU of Reading, Pa. are invited to positively attend the next regular monthly meeting-ing which will be held July 10 at 7 p. m. in the usual meeting place. All members read in the Nova Doba about the resolution by the Supreme Board. This is an important resolution concerning every member of the adult department. Others have already written about it so I will not repeat the aim of the resolution. It depends upon the membership as to the outcome, if the resolution is passed by the majority, every adult member will have to pay an additional 25 cents assessment for the duration and six months thereafter. If the resolution is accepted we start paying the additional 25 cents beginning September 1st. Therefore the matter is an important one and members can vote only at the regular monthly meetings. All members should attend and vote so that no one will be angry if the returns will not be to their liking. The meetings are very short and no one can vote for anyone else but everyone has to vote for himself. Attend the next meeting! Fraternal regards. John Pezdir Sr., Sec’y Lodge No. 61, AFU Reading, Pa. Lodge 88 AFU Loses Faithful Member Lodge No. 88, AFU of Roundup, Mont. lost one of its young members on May 25th. Brother Edward Stimac, 23 years old, died in Muselshell Valley Hospital. He was born Feb. 5, 1920 in Klein, Mont. His death was due to tuberculosis of the lungs and kidneys from which he suffered for two and a half years. He had hopes of recovery until the end. His character was of the best and he was well liked by everyone. His funeral was held May 28th at the Catholic Church of St. Benedict. Many friends attended his funeral and sent many floral pieces. Surviving him are his parents, Philip and Elizabeth Stimac; his brother, Frank; and a sister, Marie Stimac. His family wishes to express their gratitude to all who paid their son last respects, sent flowers, donated for masses and attended his funeral. They especially thank the members of Lodge No. 88, AFU for their floral * tribute and attendance at the funeral. May his memory live forever and to his family we offer our sincere sympathy in the name of the lodge. Katherine Penica, Sec’y Lodge No. 88, AFU Roundup, Mont. Meeting Reminder, Lodge 230, AFU, Chisholm, Minn. From five to I ten times as many accidents / happens to working men and women off-the-job as on-the-job, according to the reports of many industries. But accidents don’t just happen. Accidents are caused— often by just a little lapse in attention or just a little scorn of danger. The Greater Cleveland Safety Council asks workers to. give as much attention and care to their safety at home, at play and going to and from work as they do on their jobs at the plant. In this crucial year of forty-three A worker mustn’t be an accidentee! The members of Lodge 230, AFU of Chisholm, Minn, are invited to attend the next monthly meeting to be held July 8th at 8 p. m. in the usual meeting place. The general referendum vote will be held regarding the new resolution of the Supreme Board. This is in regard to whether the Union will pay full death benefit to the beneficiaries of the soldiers who die in the line of duty. If the membership should vote in the majority for this resolution then all members of the adult department will pay an additional 25 cents assessment a month. This matter is an im portant one so everyone should attend the next meeting for members can vote only at the regular monthly meeting. Fra ternal regards to all. Don’t let a loose screen bring tragedy to yofir home. Lodge 21, AFU of Denver Colo., Plans to Celebrate AFU 45th Anniversary The members of Lodge No. 21, AFU of Denver, Colo, are asked to attend, in as large a number as possible, the next regular monthly meeting to be held July 8, 1943 at the usual time and place. This meeting will be a very important one for at this time we shall discuss plans for the program to be held in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the AFU on the Slovenian Lodge’s grounds, July 18th. Another important subject to be discussed at this meeting will be the general referendum presented by the Supreme Board. If this resolution is passed every adult member will have to pay a 25 cent additional assessment every month. I would like to state that we discussed this resolution at the last monthly meeting and the membership was pretty angry because of the large amount of the special assessment, which the resolution offers. I would like to add that ,our lodge usually always agreed with the decisions of the Supreme Board but now we feel that we cannot agree to this motion. If the Supreme Board had offered a 10 or 15 cent special assessment until the next convention the members probably would have welcomed this resolution. In our opinion, we could have gotten along on this until the next convention, even though we might have to cut into the reserve death benefit fund where there is quite a sum. The members at the last meeting expressed the fact that they are ready to help the Supreme Board, without exception, regarding the amount of assessment, if they felt it was truly necessary. However, since we see that we have such a large surplus in our death benefit fund and that we have not been very hard pressed up to now, it was not necessary to impose a whole “quarter” as a special assessment. This is too much for the members to pay. That is why I feel that it is best to leave things as they are until the next convention which is not far off. Therefore members, attend the next meeting and vote according to your own convictions. Frank Okoren, Sec’y , 4759 Pearl St. Denver 16, Colo. Lodge No. 21, AFU As directed by the Supreme Board at the last session, the United Lodges of the American Fraternal Union which are located in Ely, have taken steps to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the AFU with an appropriate celebration Sunday, Aug. 15th, 1943. It was decided that a banquet be held at the Community Center on the above date, at 6 p. m. at which our Supreme President, Janko N. Rogelj, will give a talk in Slovene and Bro. Frank J. Kress, the Fourth Supreme Trustee, will speak in English, and Bro. Joseph Kovach, the Third Supreme Vice-President will be toastmaster at the banquet. It was further decided that the original founders who are still living be honored by being guests at the banquet of which the following few are still with us, Stefan Banovetz, John Gni-dica, Joseph Mantel, Mike Sterk, Martin Skala, Joseph Skala, John Skufca, Joseph J. Peshel, Joseph Pluth, Joseph Zobec and Frank Zgonc. The tickets are on sale at this time, and can be obtained from each local lodge secretary or from individuals on the ticket committee. I’ve seen some great old country, New language, birds and trees, Keeps me stepping pretty fast To follow all of these. We crossed the old Equator As you would cross the street, Water sprayed upon our heads But none upon our feet. Don’t worry ’bout your Johnnie boy For I am doing well, I’m still as fat and sassy As before Bataan had fell. MISSING BOMBERS Suppose you heard this news announcement: “Sixty American bombers missing!” And suppose you heard it every day, day after day, and week after week. It would be depressing news, wouldn’t it? Yet the nation loses through accidents every day enough man-days of labor to build sixty bombers— or twenty-three thousand bombers a years—according to the Greater Cleveland Safety Council. Every accident we prevent helps build a bomber, or a tank, or a gun. Let’s all work to prevent accidents—and keep working to win! Y. ews of Soldiers Meeting Report of Lodge I, AFU, Ely, Minn. Sunday, June 13th at our regular meeting I resigned as secretary of Lodge No. 1, as I have been called into the service, and Bro. Frank Tomsich Jr., was unanimously elected to serve again in the office he previously held for a number of years. A large attendance was on hand and a very interesting meeting was conducted and participated in by many of the members present. When the initiative motion was discussed, Bro. Joseph J. Peshel, who is one of the original founders of the organization made a very touching talk in favor of the motion. He was of the opinion that the boys who should be £oj unfortunate as to lose their lives for their country, should be paid the full death benefit, for they are fighting for all of us, and in the true spirit of fraternalism we should not hesitate to vote for the motion, for the small sum of 25 cents is nothing to pay considering what the original founders had to pay to keep the organization for dissolving in the early years of the Union. Talks were also given by the President, Joseph Kovach, Bro. Anton Zbasnik, Frank Tomsich Jr., and Bro. Joseph Spreitzer, and all were of- the same opinion, that we should vote to support the motion that our boys who may die on the far flung battle fronts should be paid in full. Some members says that they have no one m the service, and as a result are against the motion, but if they were real fraternal-ists, they would not hesitate to pay the 25 cents, for they have only the small amount to lose while the mother who will lose her son, will make the greater sacrifice, and in giving his life for his country, he not only fought to protect what is his, bi^t also for the rest of us, who are not in active combat and may not have a son in the service. Let us be brothers not only in name, but also in deed, and vote for the initiative motion. Lodge No. T can be proud of the fact, that the same fraternal spirit prevails among the members that the original founders had when they organized the Uhion, for with many of the original founders present at the meeting, the lodge approved the motion by a unanimous vote, and they also made an appeal that the membership in other branches also show they are fraternalists by VOTING FOR THE MOTION. By so doing, we will show the world that we are behind our News of Lodge 40, AFU, Claridge, Pa. Greetings to all members of Lodge No. 40, AFU of Claridge, Pa. This is the first time I am writing a few lines to the Nova Doba as president of the lodge. I would like to inform you about the happenings at our regular monthly lodge meetings. We are signing up a few new members at each meeting and hope to get more. Our secretary is about the only one that is doing any work in regards to our membership campaign. Let’s all try to enroll some new members. I would like all brother and sifter members to attend the next meeting on July 11 for there are a few important matters to be discussed at that time. We members will have to vote for the Supreme Board resolution and I hope many members will attend the next meeting which will be held July 11, 1943 at 9 a. m. I invite all members from Claridge and the neighboring towns to attend so they can cast their votes at this meeting. In this way all will be satisfied with the results. The resolution if passed will mean a 25 cent additional assessment for the duration and six months thereafter. I would like the war to be over right now but as things stand today all we can do is do our part here on the home front until it hurts. Buy all the War Bonds and Stamps you can afford; the boys are doing their part in the fight so let's back them up with War Bonds. I would like to see all the members at the next meeting. I’d like to say hello to all our lodge members who are fighting for Uncle Sam. You do your part and we back home will back you up to the last ditch. God bless you all and I hope to see you back home with us soon. Until next time I’ll say so long and leave you with the thought: Remember that our soldiers come first. They’re giving every second of their time for us so let’s not let them down. Frank Bratkovich, Pres. Lodge No. 40, AFU Claridge, Pa. Pvt. Frank E. Oblak, member of Lodge No. 70, AFU of Chicago, 111., writes to us this week as follows: “Folks you really don’t know what the Army is like until you are in it. The majority of us like it very much and are glad to serve our country in this crisfs. Just as you back home who go all out for war work to provide the weapons of war which keep us going, so do we do our part. Keep up the good work and this war will be over soon. “I would like to receive some letters from AFU members and especially now that I am a patient in the station hospital. Regards to all readers.” Pvt. Frank E. Oblak, 36660552 Station Hosp. W. 15 Camp Grant, 111. ★ ★ Mrs. E. Fraternally yours, Louis Zgonc, Sec’y Lodge No. 1, AFU Ely, Minn. Little sacrifices on the home front mean much to victory. But the Greater Cleveland Safety Council points' out that little accident risks can be a real threat to early victory. Let’s have fewer accidents here at home, so there will be fewer -wounds and lost lives on our fighting fronts. This means, as our great fight approaches its climax, that workers must be extra careful and alert, on-the-job and off-the-job—to save manpower for warpower. * * * Victory Gardeners, here’s a tip from the Greater Cleveland Safety Council: Don’t let your enthusiasm run away with your judgment! Victory gardens aren’t made in a day. Take your work gradually. And beware of too much sun! Sunburn is always painful, and can be often dangerous. Miss Florence D. Startz of Ely, Minn, has accepted a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D. C. Florence is well-known to the Nova Doba readers through her column “Ely News Flashes” and her articles to the juvenile section for many years. She promises to write about Washington as soon as she is settled there. We wish Florence much success in her new position and hope to hear from her soon. We hope to hear from her soon for I know she will have many interesting things to write about her vacation. Both girls are the daughters of Mrs. Mary Startz and active in AFU activities in Ely, Minn. Parents, the Greater Cleveland Safety Council pqints out that this Fourth of July season is a good time to break your children of careless habits that cause accidents. Appeal to their patriotism by telling them that no youngster can be a wartime hero if he’s put out of commission by an accident. Because accidents, even to children, divert time and energy from the war effort. * • * i Here’s a message to workers from the Greater Cleveland Safety Council: On your way home from work you’re apt to be tired and less alert to danger. So please give a special jog to your attention on the way home. Make both ends of the day meet in a safe victory job! Spar Officers Train at U. S. Coast Guard Academy Beginning June 24 officer candidates of the Coast Guard SPARS will receive all their training at the U. S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Conn. No other military service admits women officer candidates to its peacetime officers' training school. Annapolis of thd Navy and West Point" of the Army are still for men’only. SPAR Cadets will enter and be commissioned from the Academy in groups of 75 under the new training schedule. By the end of 1943 approximately 500 Spai* officers will have been commissioned from the Academy. About half that number have already been trained- and are on duty. They are serving as procurement officers; as officers at the SPAR’s new training center for enlisted personnel at Palm Beach, Florida, and at Coast Guard district and national headquar ters. The SPAR’s. officer complement will not be greatly increased in 1944, under present plans, although the procurement goal of 8000 enlisted SPARS by the end of 1944 may be increased. It takes a male Coast Guard Cadet three years in wartime1 and four years in peacetime to arrive at the Coast Guard’s reg— ular commission and meantime he has acquired a Bachelor of Science Degree. Officer candidates of the Women’s Reserve usually have a degree when they enter the Academy. Not all SPAR officer candidates are college graduates. They must have at least two years of college training and two years of acceptable business or professional experience to qualify as officer candidates. Several deans of women and many possessors of Master’s and PH.D degrees have slung the wax and swung the polishing mops on the decks of SPAR quarters at the Academy. Prizadeti so bili posebno posevki koruze, bombaža in pšenice. NAPADI NA PORURJE Nemška pokrajina Porurje (Ruhr) producira za Nemčijo približno tri četrtine premoga, štiri petine koka in dve tretjini surovega železa in jekla. Roundup, Mont. Benedikta na pokopališče New Miner, Klein, Mont. Pokojnik zapušča tukaj starše Philipa in Elizabeto Stimac, brata Franka in sestro Marie Stimac. Johnstown, Pa. Bratski pozdrav! — Za društvo št. 16 ABZ: Jerry Gorentz, tajnik. Pittsburgh, Pa. Bratski pozdrav! — Za društvo št. 12 ABZ: Frank Alic, tajnik. Reading, Pa. — člani in čla nice društva Sv. Glasovati more vsak samo zase. Nihče ne more oddati glasu za drugega. Torej, pridite na sejo! Bratski pozdrav! Bratski pozdrav! — Za društvo št. 1 ABZ: Louis Zgonc, tajnik. Ely, Minn. Saj so ustanovniki naše organizacije plačevali mnogo višje naklade, da so obvarovali organizacijo razpada. V istem smislu so govorili tudi: društveni predsednik Joseph Kovach, brat Anton Zbašnik, brat Frank Tomsich, Jr. in brat Joseph Spreitzer. Prvi odmevi so dobri. Rojaka Bruc in Mahnich sta nabrala v skupni vsoti skoro sto dolarjev prispevkov. Kdo bo tretji? Odgovor bo od nabiralcev. Zaključna seja bo 10. julija ob treh popoldne v Slovenskem narodnem domu. — Za postojanko št. 36 SANS: Joseph Zorc, tajnik.
