DON’T TAKE ROOT!
Many things are portable today. We have portable typewriters, sewing machines, radios, stoves and even houses, for that is what trailers really are. In one sense this is an indication of the restlessness and insecurity of people today but in another sense there is real spiritual value in being portable, for it always remains true that the Christian who is not unduly attached to things of the world will be ready to rise up and go when God gives marching orders.

Archbishop of Chicago
Prince of the Catholic Church, who died in Rome on May 26, 1958 at the age of 71 years. He was the beloved prelate of Chicago and thousands and thousands of his flock filled Holy Name Cathedral to pay him their last respects before his burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery on June 3rd. May his noble soul rest in peace.
Minutes of the 11th National S.W.U. Convention
May 18-21, 1958,
The 11th National Convention of the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, being held at the Hotel Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Wis., Mon., May 19th, is opened and greeted by Supreme President, Josephine Livek with sixty-three (63) delegated, one honorary delegate and thirteen (13) Supreme Officers in attendance, as reported by the Committee on Credentials. The Committee also recommended the Hon. Delegate given the same status as the regular delegates. It is approved. The Invocation is given by Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M., Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church. The Secretary, Albina Novak, calls the roll of delegates and officers. Director of Juvenile Activities, Mary Theodore, Minn., is absent due to illness. Recording secretaries of the Convention are Secretary Novak and Editor, Corinne Leskovar. Mimeographed copies of the minutes will be compiled by the Recorders and given daily.

The Assembly extends compliments to the hostess of the Convention, and the Convention Arrangements Committee, officers of branches 12, 43, in Milwaukee and 17 in West Allis, Wis.: Mrs. Frances Plesko, Mrs. Rose Kraemer, Mrs. Josephine Schlossar, Mrs. Marie Floryan, Mrs. Frances Pi-woni, Mrs. Mary Meznarich. The Convention was highly honored with their warm reception in Milwaukee on Sunday, May 18th and considers the day a memorable one. The schedule events including the High Mass offered by Rev. Okorn at St. John’s Church, and the Grand Convention Banquet followed by the Convention Program were highly inspiring and enjoyable. The assembly compliments the Church Choir and their Director, the actors and performers of the program and all who made the fine presentation possible. Especially remembered was the beautiful tribute to deceased members in the memorial scene. The large gathering at the Banquet was indeed a magnificent demonstration by the members of the Milwaukee and West Allis branches and all friends of S.W.U. in Milwaukee. A heartfelt thank-you to all.

On the nomination by the President and unanimously approved by the delegation, Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M., is elected the Spiritual Advisor.
A motion is heard by A. Satovich, and seconded that the Secretary invite the Union’s Actuary, Mr. Carl A. Tiffany, requesting him to meet with the assembly at the Tuesday meeting.
The President calls the reports of Supreme Officers.
Secretary, Mrs. Novak makes several important points, in addition to her printed Convention Report in Zarja. She stresses the importance of new ideas and activity in the Union to encourage more new members to join. Also, the explanation follows of the deficit existing in the Class A Mortuary Fund and suggests that this Convention find the remedy to the problem of increasing the fund by an in-creasei in Class A assessment. The other two classes, B and Junior are over-solvent, meaning a good future for those two Funds. She also suggests that more can be done for the youth by using the Youth Fund as a basis, if the remaining Class A Fund is made solvent. Furthermore., there is no question as to the importance of accepting the increase in assessment if the Union is to continue to comply with the Insurance laws of the State of Illinois. The Secretary also is looking forward to being able to take a much-needed rest during the months of August and September.

The Secretary of the Finance Board, Mrs. Marie Pris-land, as a Wisconsinite, welcomes the assembly to the State of Wisconsin and to Milwaukee, the Convention City. Her report is attached. A Slovenian translation and explanation of the report, including the Scholarship and Benefit Fund report is read and discussed.

My financial report will cover the period from January 1, 1955 to March 31, 1958. During this time several U.S. Government bonds matured in the amount of $85,000.00. These capital gains and other surpluses were invested in the following securities:

Bonds are carried on the books at purchase price. Investments yield is approximately 3.25% overall.
Interest received from January 1, 1955 to March 31, 1958 amounts to $47,174.27. According to the ruling of the last Convention, this money was placed in the General Expense Fund to help defray expenditures.
From the beginning of our organization until March 31, 1958, a sum of $119,260.55 has been received in interest on our investments.
In addition to studying the stock market, placing invest-mets and managing the Scholarship and Benefit funds, I also prepared a table of classification listing all our funds, namely: Class A, B, Junior and General expense funds from July 1, 1952 to March 31, 1956. To avoid repetition, I will not classify these funds here nor list the names of the Savings and Loan Associations where we have investments, as they were reported in full by the Supreme Secretary in the May issue of ZARJA.
During the life time of our Union, 2459 members died. The total death benefits paid amounted to $246,518.00.

Among all the recipients of Scholarship grants, we now have six teachers, two doctors, a nurse, two accountants, and one theology student on his way to priesthood. Isn’t it wonderful that we are responsible in a small way for these splendid students to achieve their goal.

A few months ago Branch No. 84 in New York contributed $10.00 to our new Welfare Fund.
The Benefit Fund, which started to function in the fall of 1949 is now—as you see from the above report—completely depleted. This Fund contained $5,000.00 to which $510.00 was later added from a profit of the sale of Boston Fund bonds and a transfer from the Scholarship Fund. The following charities benefited from this Fund:
School supplies, evaporated milk, chocolate, soap, tooth brushes and paste were sent to needy children in Slovenia. Amount of this shipment was $610.80.
To various needy families in Slovenia food packages and 10,400 lbs. of flour were sent. This amounted to $2,228.20.
Singer sewing machines were donated to four schools in Slovenia.
Other institutions received kitchen appliances, recorders, epidiascope and supplies were sent to hospital in Celje, Slovenia. A few doctors received stethoscopes and used medical books; priests did get prayer books, rosaries and medicine. Mrs. Albina Novak, Supreme Secretary, distributed from this Fund $300.00 worth of articles during her visit to Slovenia in 1953. Total amount of this contribution was $1,836.000. (The places where the above shipments were sent are listed in my Slovenian report.)
From the Benefit Fund a contribution of $165.00 was donated for the altar in the Baraga’s Home in Lemont and $670.00 was given to members with lingering illnesses according to the ruling of the last two conventions.
The total distribution from the Benefit Fund amounted to $5,510.00.
In addition to the above, our branches sent to Slovenia after the war 14,158 lbs. of clothing, 7,886 lbs. of canned food, 2,100 lbs. of miscellaneous articles and 590 pair of shoes. A total of 24,144 pounds. To the Jugoslav Relief Fund—Slovenian Section—a donation of $2,601.25 was made.
My special collection on behalf of the hospital in Celje, Slovenia, amounts to date $952.66. For this amount the following equipment was purchased: A spectrophotometer for their laboratory, purchased from the Unicam Instruments LTD, Cambridge, England, for the price of $846.00. X-ray films and a Fluoroscopic screen was purchased from the E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co., Wilmington, Delaware, for the amount of $107.00.
Dr. Jože Flajs, Chief of Staff of the Celje Hospital is deeply grateful to all the donors who helped the hospital to acquire these most needed instruments and supplies.
In all—our combined benefits for Slovenia amounts to well over $32,000.00.
An additional $9,673.00 remains in this country. Benefiting from our contributions in America were the Mt. Assisi Girl Academy and the Slovenian Franciscan Sisters in Lemont, 111.	($3,117.00), Baraga’s Home' in Lemont,
($476.00), members with lingering sicknesses ($670.00), and Slovenian fire victims in Cleveland, Ohio ($500.00). During the war a sum of $1,512.00 was donated to the American Red Cross and the sum of $3,400.00 was contributed to needy students in the form of scholarships.
Our total contributions for good causes so far amounted to $42,000.00.
This charitable work was possible only with the cooperation of our good members and our generous friends. May God bless them all!

The Treasurer, Mrs. Josephine Železnikar, states her written report was already printed in the May issue of Zarja. Further, she adds that all financial transactions were carefully made through the office of the Secretary and that her report agrees exactly. An added deposit of $3,574.000, from Cookbook sales, is also on hand. She concludes her report by complimenting the Secretary of the Finance Committee, Mrs. Prisland, for her handling of the investments.

President of Auditing Board, Mrs. Mary Otoničar, states that in three years time, careful checking of all the assets of the Union has been done. Third Auditor, Josephine Sumic reads her report: “Supreme Board of the S.W.U., Delegates, members and friends. I extend you my greetings on this occasion of the iS.W.U. Convention. I was most happy to serve you as a supreme officer in the capacity of trustee. I audited all the accounts given me and I attended every session of thet supreme board. I found everything in the best order. I attended as many as I was able of the activities promoted by the S.W.U. and Its respective branches. Being also a director of the Midwest S.W.U. Bowling Association, I attended all the sessions and I am thrilled to report that the Association’s Bowling Tournaments were most successful and they brought much prestige to the S.W.U.
I am most apprehensive of the future of our S.W.U. There seems to be an alarming stay-put condition—we need new members. I hope that this convention, with the help of you members, can find the answers. My greatest hope is that we avail ourselves of the many new and modern features which are being perpetrated for fraternal association. My answer to this predicament is that we bring to the attention of all branches that our association should be fostered through appealing programs—that each branch becomes alive with many entertaining features and activities. That each branch becomes the most active unit in its respective community.
I salute the S.W.U. bowlers, their teams, leagues, and tournaments, all of which have been most successful and ■each brought much credit and merit to all of us. I salute also all the active branches and congratulate them upon the efforts in promoting their activities in many fields.
My earnest wishes are that we here in Milwaukee come to decisions which will lead our S.W.U. to the highest heights into the brightest future. Thank you.”

Although we may feel that at times our task is too great, remember we have God’s love and guidance, along with that, we have years of hard work by the officers and branches.

Women’s Activities 'Director, Mrs. Elizabeth Zefran has a message of encouragement for all to secure new members through active bowling programs in each town. Through her write-ups in Zarja, she has tried to explain the favorite activities her own branch in Chicago has planned. In the future, she knows that many money-making ideas can be circulated among the branches, giving them an added boost.

Editor, Mrs. Corinnei Leskovar states her appreciation to all, the Officers, reporters and members, for their wholehearted approval of her work in the past three years. She makes points concerning the operation of Zarja, the necessity to keeping the deadline strict—the requirement of limiting every reporter’s article to one column to conserve space and the importance of raising funds for the incidental expenses incurred in the printing of Zarja. She thanks the solicitors of ads who have helped make this fund grow and adds that with the balance being over $860, one extra issue of Zarja on 32 pages will be made possible this year. She also suggests that any member desiring to secure the casting of pictures printed in Zarja, may write to her with the request and she will send them free of charge. She concludes by thanking all.

Honorary Delegate, Mrs. Bara Kramer explains what the Union means to her. She was present at its beginning, organized four branches herself, and has the greatest hope of continuing to see it grow. The first session of the eleventh National S.W.U. Convention is adjourned at 12:15 p.m. for lunch. An excursion trip to the Holy Hill Shrine near Milwaukee is scheduled for 1 p.m. An invitation is extended the assembly to be the. guests of branch 17 in West Allis, Wis., for supper at G p.m. and a social evening at St. Mary’s Auditorium.
The second session of the 11th National S.W.U. Convention commences Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Hotel Wisconsin. The meeting is opened by the President, Mrs. Josephine Livek. The Invocation is given by Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M., who is also present for the business session. Sentinels of the day are Antoinette Tanko #50, and Anne B. Satovich #56. The Minutes of the previous day’s proceedings are read by the Recording Secretary, Corinne Leskovar and accepted. The President calls the names of appointees to the Appeals and Grievance Committee: Millie Novak #10, Pres., Anna Trontel #26, Mary Bonenfant #28, Jennie Pugely #47, Mary Stra-zishar #14.
On a motion by the Secretary, Albina Novak, the Convention Youth Committee is increased with the addition of four more members: Christine Menart #7, Angeline Ka-rish #39, Antoinette Tanko #50 and Rose Kraemer #43, making a total of seven members.
The President announces that the meeting will start promptly at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning and that on Tuesday and Wednesday, the morning session will adjourn for lunch at noon.
The Secretary is asked to call the roll of officers and delegates. There are 77 in the assembly; all are present.
Greetings Committee Chairman, A. Tanko #50, reports that 16 telegrams and 10 greeting cards were sent by the committee. She also moves to send a $10.00 gift to Lillian Kozek #2, past Supreme Officer who is totally disabled. It is approved.
Hon. President, Mrs. Marie Prisland, submits a Resolution to the Convention addressed to the U.S. Dept, of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C., which is approved and is as follows:
A RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, in diplomacy and in science, a knowledge of more than one language can mean the difference between success and failure, and we Americans— as a nation—are playing for high stakes, possibly survival itself in both these fields — yet, we are lamentably weak in the matter of speaking languages other than our own; and,
WHEREAS, scientific papers published in other langauges are disclosing important research which the Americans scientists do not read because they do not know the language; and,
WHEREAS, the English language will eventually become the universal language of the earth, it is also well for us as Americans to recognize the important fact that we cannot afford to wait too long to learn other languages in the meantime,
THEREFORE, the Supreme Board members and the delegates of the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, assembled at their 11th National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the wreek of May 18-21, 1958, urge your Department to advocate a PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM that would get youngsters started on foreign languages studies in the elementary grades and be made part of the regular curriculum.

Discussion is opened. The Secretary, Mrs. Novak, on the-suggestion of Rev. Okorn, proposes that a Resolution be prepared and sent to all Pastors of Slovenian parishes in the U.S., recommending the instruction of the Slovenian and Croatian languages in the schools. This motion is seconded and unanimously accepted.
A RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Slovenian pioneers in this country contributed their efforts for our better future; and,.
WHEREAS, the cultural heritage left to the second and third generations of these Slovenian pioneers is in jeopardy because of a lack of knowledge in the Slovenian language; and,
WHEREAS, other Catholic schools with nationality backgrounds actively conduct language courses-for their school children; and,
WHEREAS, Slovenian parochial schools are the only schools in a position to offer Slovenian languages studies which are not available anywhere else;
THEREFORE, the Slovenian Women’s Union, standing on Catholic principles and advocating the preservation of the natural rights of every nationality, appeals to you, the Pastors of Slovenian and Croatian Parochial Schools in the U.S. to incorporate the teaching of the Slovenian and Croatian languages in your school program.

The Committee on By-laws, Chairman, Mrs. Prisland,. reports that in order to continue with the work of the committee, she must have the recommendation of the assembly on several points to be proposed as By-laws changes. At the last semi-annual Board of Directors meeting, the proposal was approved that the Union elect seven Vice-Presidents in place of the five Supreme Vice-Presidents now holding office. Each of the Vice-Presidents, hereafter to be called State Presidents, would be chosen, one each, from the following designated states: l) Penna.-N.Y., 2) Ohio-Mich., 3) Ill.-Ind., 4) Wis., 5) Minn., 6) Colo.-Kans.-Mo., 7) Calif.-Ore.-Wash. Further, the State Presidents would each conduct a yearly State Convention to be held for the-purpose of meeting and discussing mutual activities and programs. In the states of Illinois and Minnesota, state days, called “Zveza Days” and .arranged as religious and social events, are in existence for many years; similarly, the other states would have the opportunity of holding
"Zveza Days in connection with the State Convention. The motion is made and passed authorizing a change in the By-laws omitting the provision for four Supreme Vice-Presidents and admitting the provision for seven State Presidents in addition to the First Supreme Vice-President who remains as before. The seven State Presidents are to be given the same privileges as the previous Vice-Presidents and are considered Supreme Officers.
Another proposal is brought before the assembly by the By-laws Committee Chairman, Mrs. Prisland, regarding proposed increase in assessment. Secretary, Mrs. Novak reads the Summary of Valuation of the Reserve Liability on Class A membership Fund, compiled by the Union’s Actuary, Mr. Carl A. Tiffany, stating the present condition of the Class A Fund, which is shown to be under-solvent. The •discussion from the floor is opened. Points brought forward include: the age average of the membership is relatively high; the necessity of using money from other funds and from the interest on bonds to cover deficits in Class A through the last decade; the solvency of Class B and Junior Class funds which must be protected for the future. The question period follows in length. The subject is tabled until after lunch.

The Tuesday afternoon session convenes at 2:15 p.m. The President calls for the branch reports from the delegates. A great majority of delegates report their branches’ wish that the assessment not be raised.
The President calls for Committee reports. Resolutions Committee Chairman, Mrs. Pauline Stampfel #25, reads a resolution sent by Branch 40, Lorain, O. They ask that members in good standing for 25 years would pay only into .the Mortuary Fund beginning their 70th birthday.
Appeals and Grievance Committee Chairman, Mrs. Millie Novak #10, reports the names of the following deserving and disabled members for whom aid is requested. Names are proposed by the Chairman of this Committee as well as from the floor. They are: Mrs. Kuhar #89, Mary Mon-freda #5, Mrs. Trsnik #14, Georgia Gasper #95, Mary Ivanevich #33 and Lillian Kozek #2. On a motion by Angela Kozjan and passed by the assembly, a collection is taken which is to be divided equally among the above-named members. The collection totals $84.00 giving each of the six members $14.00. An appeal is heard from a member ■of branch 47 for herself and husband. The Secretary is directed to write a character reference for this member.
Resulting from the discussion on this subject, it is moved and passed that:
1) no plea for charity purposes be brought to the convention unless it is an emergency case;
2) no gifts of money be sent to European countries in the future. The Hon. Pres., Mrs. Prisland, explains that the Benefit Fund monies which were used in the past to send to the needy in Europe1 was collected for this purpose and spent for this purpose. Even so, part of the money was used for the needy in the U.S.
Discussion is re-opened on the proposed raise in assessment. The decision is made by the convention to vote by show of hands in this matter. Rev. Okorn advises the delegates of their responsibility as representatives of their branches and members, to do what is best for the organization as a whole, and that it is everyone’s duty to see the future obligations the Union will have to face. Discussion from the floor is lengthy; however, the final point raised is that with the facts of the matter being what they are, every delegate who reports the present standing of the Union’s finances back to her branch, will explain where there is a direct need to raise the assessment at this time. In fact, that it is a move long over-due. Therefore, on a motion by the Secretary, it is passed that assessment be
increased five (5) cents monthly in both adult classes. An addition to the motion, by Mary Otoničar, states that the increased assessment should go into effect January 1, 1959. It is passed. The points brought out in regard to the possible loss of members due to their dissatisfaction with the increase in assessment include the suggestion that the older members will have more to lose by dropping out than they will have by remaining as members in good standing. It is hoped the younger members will see the necessity of the raise, and remain loyal. The immediate need for funds in Class A is directly resultant from; the fact that the death rate is so high among the Class A members and their payment does not cover the expenses. In Class B, the increase of five cents monthly per member, will solidify the Fund; and, depending on the amount of death claims paid in Class B in the next three years, this surplus could be used to help finance the next convention so that the delegates would be paid their expenses.
The By-laws Committee Chairman, Mrs. Prisland, recommends the following as necessary changes to be made from the standpoint of keeping the Junior members longer. That, 1) juniors be accepted from birth to 20 years of age and that, 2) the age of transfer to the adult classes is from 14 years to the 21st years of age. It is moved by the Secretary and passed. The Chairman is instructed to make the necessary changes in By-laws.
A suggestion from the floor is made that taking in boys as junior memibers be discontinued. The Secretary points out that the enrollment of boys has helped increase the junior membership in many branches. She states that if there was more interest to enroll girls as juniors, there would not be the necessity of enrolling boys at all. On a motion by Mary Otoničar, the assembly approves waiting until the next convention to se:e how the standing of junior boy members progresses and if changes are shown to be needed, they be made then.
The Secretary makes the following motion: To reinstate all juniors who wish to pay up their back dues and who were 18 years old or younger in 1956. They may continue to be junior members until the transfer age is attained. It is seconded and passed.
The meeting is adjourned at 5 p.m. The delegation is invited to supper as the guests of Branches 12 and 43 at the St. John’s Hall. Rev. Okorn gives the concluding prayer.
The third session of the 11th National S.W.U. Convention is opened by the President, Mrs. Livek, on Wednesday morning, May 21st at 9:15 a.m. Rev. Olcorn offers the Invocation. Roll call of officers and delegates follows with all 77 in attendance. Sentinels of the day are A. Tanko #50 and A. Satovich #56. The Minutes of the previous day’s meeting are read by the Recording Secretary, Mrs. Novak, and accepted. The delegation compliments the Recording Secretaries, Mrs. Novak and Mrs. Leskovar, for their excellent compilation of Minutes and the mimeograph copies distributed to the delegates.
The President calls for Committee Reports. By-laws Committee Chairman, Mrs. Marie Prisland, on behalf of the Committee, reports the following proposed changes which are approved by the assembly —
Article 28	change:	five Vice-Presidents, to one Vice-
President and seven State Presidents.
Article 42	change:	April and October to January and
July of each year; also, add: on the last Tuesday of the month.
The Secretary here suggests that the decision of the last Board of Directors’ Meeting be confirmed as to the date of the next semi-annual Board meeting — to be held January, 1959. It is approved.
Article 57 take out: First before Vice-President.
Article 58 change: The rights and duties of all the Vice-Presidents, to all State Presidents.
Article 80 add to second sentence:	Keep a checking
account in the name of Zarja by which all extra publishing expenses of the organ be paid, including Writers’ awards.
Article 85 add: Awards (reading: Salaries and awards).
Article 89 add: Catholic institutional bonds and Mutual funds.
Full motion reads: All monies available for investment from the Union’s funds be also invested in Catholic Institutional bonds and in Mutual funds, this to be done at the discretion of the Finance Committee. (M. Klemenčič #96).
Article 113 change: regular monthly assessment shall be thirty-five cents for members in Class A and sixty cents for members in Class B, to forty cents and sixty-five cents, respectively.
Article 116 change: shall be maintained by a twenty cent monthly assessment upon each member insured in Class B, to twenty-five cents and fifty cents, respectively.
Article 120 change: Girls ranging from birth to 18 years of age and boys from birth to 14 years of age, to Children from birth to 20 years of age.
Article 121 change in Slovenian text as to separation of terms: boys and girls to children.
The Secretary makes a suggestion concerning the awarding of a $50 Rider to Juvenile Class members’ certificates upon their transfer to the adult classes, stating: Juniors who are members for 10 years or longer will get as many months free assessment in the adult class after they transfer, as the number of years over 10 for which they were members. It is approved and entered into the Minutes.
Article 125 change: (second sentence) age of 18, to age of 21 years.
Article 198 change: By-laws accepted and approved at the tenth regular convention held on May 23, 24, 25, 1955 in the city of Cleveland, State of of Ohio shall become effective July 1st, 1955, to 11th regular convention held on May 19, 20, 21, 1958 in the city of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, shall become effective July 1st, 1958.
Article 201 new article: State Conventions or State Days (Zveza Days) shall take place once a year in the state or states where so desired and at different branches every year. At the State Conventions or State Bays, every branch shall send a representative.
Article 202 new article: The State President shall organize the State Convention or State Day and prepare a program containing items of interest for the betterment and improvement of the branches in the state and for the Union.
Article 203 new article:	The State President will be
awarded annually an amount of $10.00 from the Union. For her work in planning the arrangements and conducting the State Convention or State Day, she shall be awarded an additional $25.00 by the Union.
Article 204 new article: The designations of states shall consist of seven groups, each to be entitled to their own State President. They are: 1) Penna.-N.Y.; 2) Ohio-Mich.; 3) Ill.-Ind.; 4) Wise.; 5) Minn:; 6) Colo.-Kans.-Mo.; 7) Calif.-Ore.-Wash.
A motion of A. Satovich #56 is heard that the proposals in By-law change and new articles be accepted. It is seconded and passed. The President offers her thanks to the Committee for their fine work. By-law changes will be printed in Zarja as a supplement to the book, on Bylaws and Regulations.
The Secretary reads the directive of the State of Illinois. Insurance Department and recommendation of the Union’s Actuary, concerning the operation of business in states where not specifically licensed. The Convention accepts, the following Resolution into the Minutes:
WHEREAS the Slovenian Women’s Union of America is organized as a burial insurance society under the laws of the State of Illinois, and
WHEREAS the Union is licensed only in Illinois,, but has members in many other States, and WHEREAS the Director of Insurance for the State of Illinois in the Report of Examination made by his Department, dated January 16, 1958, has questioned the Union’s insurance activity in States other than Illinois without a specific license from such other States, and
WHEREAS the Union has corresponded with each of the other States, advising therm of the nature and extent of its insurance activities in such other States, and
WHEREAS it is the firm policy of the Slovenian Women’s Union of America to comply with the spirit as well as the letter of the laws of the States in all matters pertaining to its insurance activities, and WHEREAS the States of California, New York, Oregon and Washington have expressed the opinion that the Union’s insurance activities are contrary to the laws of those States, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Union and its members cease any activity in the solicitation or procurement of new members within the borders of the States of California, New York, Oregon or Washington until such time as properly licensed by said States, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the officers and directors be empowered and authorized to take all steps necessary and desirable to conform the Union’s insurance activities to the laws of the several States, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that nothing in the foregoing resolutions be construed or interpreted as prohibiting or limiting the Union’s right to collect assessments and pay benefits with respect to present members in the aforementioned States.
A motion is heard by Hon. Pres., Marie Prisland that in the future, every Fund should receive into itself, the interest from savings due. It is seconded and passed.
The President calls the subject of the Union’s monthly organ Zarja. On a motion by A. Tanko #50, seconded and passed, it is decided that Zarja be kept in the same size and form as it is. A report is heard by the Secretary concerning the cost of printing Zarja—in the past and in the future. The Benedictine Press, publishers of Zarja have quoted no immediate change in price for the printing; therefore, she moves that the monthly organ continue to be printed at the Benedictine Press where the work is-most satisfactory. It is seconded and passed.
Committee on Salaries and Per Diems, Chairman, Ella Starin #41, reports the following recommendations, based upon the salaries and awards of the previous convention: Per diem, $12; Spiritual Advisor, $100 yearly award; Hon. President, $50 monthly award plus $25 admin, expense; President, $75 monthly award plus $25 admin, expense; Secretary, $300 monthly salary plus $40 admin, expense, for office maintenance $100 monthly; Treasurer, $200 yearly award; Editor, $300 monthly salary plus $40 admin, ex-
pense; Vice-President, $20 yearly award; Auditors, $25 each yearly award plus traveling and per diem for semi-annual meetings; Directors of Women’s and Juvenile Activities, $25 yearly award plus $25 compensation expense. Convention awards:
$ 50, President as Convention presiding officer;
$150, Secretary for Convention preparations;
$100, Chairman of By-laws Committee;
$ 50, Editor for Convention preparations;
$ 40 each, Recording Secretaries of Convention.
The Committee also agrees with the awards stipulated previously for the seven State Presidents. The Committee also recommends that in the future, Supreme Officers invited to represent the Union at branch functions, would be reimbursed for their expenses by the inviting branch. The Committee's report is approved by the Convention.
The morning session is adjourned at noon. It is suggested that later the day, the delegates will have an opportunity to receive the unsold articles of handwork on exhibit.
The meeting is re-convened at 1:20 p.m., Vice-President, Frances Globokar, presiding. The Youth Committee report is called. Chairman Elizabeth Zefran reports that the Committee recommends retaining the two Directors of Women’s and Juvenile Activities as national directors in these two fields. Promotion of activity in sports, primarily bowling is encouraged among the young members. They recommend that junior groups be engaged in sports and “play” programs to their own liking and that those branches which have not other functions for their juveniles, plan parties at least once a year for their enjoyment. Prizes for organized junior groups are also suggested. For adult members who wish to engage in moneymaking ventures for their branch treasuries, suggestions are also offered. Discussions continues from the floor.
A motion is heard by A. Tanko #50, that State Presidents each appoint a youth director for her territory to coordinate activity in fields of Juvenile work and sports, with the two national directors of Youth and Women’s Activity. Seconded and passed. Further, a suggestion by J. Železnikar, Supreme Treasurer, recommends that branch officers help the younger members in achieving success in their endeavors so that with mutual cooperation, and with less burden on the State President, juvenile programs can be planned. A discussion follows. It is also recommended that the national directors work with the branches which are not so active in youth activities. The Youth Committee report is accepted.
Hon. Pres., Marie Prisland asks the delegation to reconsider the decision made earlier in the day to withhold Supreme Officer representation from branch functions unless the branches assume responsibility for their expenses. She feels that it would hurt the prestige of the Union and minimize the branches’ efforts, if an official representative was made available only on these terms. Therefore it Is moved by A. Satovich #56, and seconded that the Supreme Officers (Officer) invited, be sent as an official representative to a Union event and that if any more Officers attend, their expenses will be their own or the hostess branch’s. Also, it is agreed that all invitations sent to the Supreme Officers must carry the signatures of three of the branch’s officers.
Appeals and Grievance Committee Chairman, M. Novak, #10, reads the names of two disabled members for whom aid is requested: Mary Sever and Fannie Terchek of #7. They are each awarded the same amount as those called previously, the amount to be deducted from the Handcraft Exhibit proceeds. The Hon. Pres, reports a total of $254.55 collected on this project, $70.00 of this amount was the return on the Slovenian Doll which was made and donated ■by A. Novak. It is moved and seconded that the Benefit Fund, now nearly depleted, be awarded the profit made on the exhibit. Thanks are extended to all who donated to the exhibit and to all who purchased the items of needlework.
The President calls the attention of the delegation to the records made and being sold by the Choral Club of #2, Chicago, including eight Slovenian folksongs. She suggests that every mennber takes an album home as a remembrance of the convention.
Resolutions Committee Chairman, P. Stampfel #25, recommends a vote of confidence be extended to the Supreme Officers for their past work on behalf of the Union. It is moved and seconded.
The President proposes to the Convention that St. John the Evangelist Church, be remembered with a gift from the Union in gratitude for their hospitality and generosity during the convention festivities. The convention agrees to the sum of $100.00.
Greetings are read from the many branches and individuals, by the Secretary.
This concluded the order of business. The Nominations Committee Chairman, Mary Otoničar then calls the committee together and proceeds with the elections of officers. First, she presents the nomination of Marie Prisland as Honorary President. The convention unanimously favors the nomination and acclaims her the title for her lifetime. Nominations for each office are read by the; Chairman. For the office of President, the Committee nominates: Josephine Livek #89 and Antoinette Tanko #50. There arei no nominations from the floor. After the secret ballot was taken, the Chairman announces the result naming Mrs. Livek the duly elected President with 56 votes to 22 votes for Mrs. Tanko. In her address of thanks, Mrs. Livek states her hopes that much progress will be realized by the Union in the next three years.
The Committee makes one nomination for the office of Vice-President, Frances Globokar #14. There are no nominations from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for Frances Globokar as Vice-President. She thanks the! Convention most heartily.
The Committee makes one nomination for Secretary: Albina Novak #2. There are no nominations from the floor. The Chairman casts one unanimous ballot for Mrs. Novak as Secretary. An expression of thanks follows by Mrs. Novak wherein she states that she will continue to work with all her ability for the betterment among all the officers. The Convention grants her a two-month leave of absence from her office this summer. Rev. Okorn states that the convention agrees Mrs. Novak is deserving of the vacation; and, he hopes there will be a grand future for the Union in all the many phases of activity in the next three years.
The Committee makes one nomination for Treasurer: Josephine Železnikar #2. There are no nominations from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for Mrs. Železnikar as Treasurer. The newly elected Treasurer expresses her sincere thanks to all for the confidence placed In her.
The Committee makes one nomination for the office of President of the Auditing Board: Mary Otoničar #25. There is no nomination fromi the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for Mrs. Otoničar as First Auditor. She accepts with thanks.
The Committee makes one nomination for Second Auditor: Katie Triller #16. There is no nomination from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for Miss Triller as Second Auditor. She also thanks everyone for this position of trust.
The Committee makes one nomination for Third Auditor: Josephine Sumic #20. Mrs. Sumic does not accept the nomination. Nominations are heard from the floor: Mary Muller #2 and Ann Podgoršek #33. After secret ballots were taken, the Chairman announces the newly elected Third Auditor is Ann Podgoršek with 40 votes to 37 for M. Muller. Mrs. Podgoršek thanks the body and says she was most pleased to be given this position, although it comes as a total surprise.
The Committee makes one nomination for Editor of ZARJA: Corinne Leskovar #2. There are no nominations from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for Mrs. Leskovar as Editor. She, too, thanks the assembly and states that she hopes to hear from all the officers and delegates many times in the future through the pages of ZARJA.
The Committee makes one nomination for Women’s Activity Dir., Elizabeth Zefran, #2. There is no nomination from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimously ballot for Mrs. Zefran as Director of Women’s Activities. She warmly accepts the- position with thanks. The Committee asks for nominations from the floor for the office of Juvenile Activities’ Director. There are two nominations, for: Christine Menart #7 and Anne B. Satovich #56. After secret ballots were taken, the Chairman announces the result, naming Mrs. Menart as the Juvenile Director. She thanks the convention.
The Committee nominates four members of the Finance Committee: Josephine Livek, Marie Prisland, Secretary, Albina Novak and Josephine Železnikar. There are no nominations from the floor. The Secretary casts one unanimous ballot for the four members of the Finance Committee.

The Secretary moves that the Convention extends thanks to Honorary Delegate, Barbara Kramer of San Francisco, Calif., for her constant interest in the Union and that she be Invited to the next convention as Honorary Delegate. It is so approved.
The Convention city for 19G1 is selected as Ely, Minn.
The President asks Rev. Okora to act as Installing Officer and all officers elected for the new term are sworn in as is customary. Rev. Okorn also adresses the group wishing them God’s blessing.
The President extends thanks to the delegates for bringing their donations of needlework for the exhibition. Also, thanks to the many visitors for their interest in the progress of the Union. She expresses th® gratitude of all to the hostesses of the convention, #12, #43 and #17 and says that everyone will remember what a good time was had in Milwaukee. A warm ovation is given by the delegation. She also thanks the Vice-President for her help In presiding at the meeting on Wednesday.
Founder, Marie Prisland, extends a sincere thank-you to all and says that since she will be leaving for an European trip in a few days, including a visit to Lourdes, France, she will remember everyone, members and officers, in her prayers at the shrine. Thanks are extended to branch 17 for the lovely gifts she received and to their secretary and also to the hostesses of the Banquet on Sunday for the corsage.
The convention grants authority to the Hon. President, President and Secretary to approve the Minutes of the Wednesday meeting.
The Convention is adjourned at 4 p.m. With the concluding prayer and hymn singing, the President wishes everyone a safe journey home.

Dear officers and members:
In assuming the duties and responsibilities of the highest office in our organization for the third term, I am fully aware of the tremendous work and worries that will be mine again. In all the past years I have found the greatest satisfaction in the mutual friendship and trust that you have so liberally extended to me. It is nice working where there is cooperation and I must acknowledge with deep appreciation thei wonderful assistance given me by the Supreme Officers and also by our branch officers and members. If we continue to be united in fraternal endurance no force will overtake us and our Union’s progress will never be stopped.
The Slovenian Women’s Union is not the success of one person or a group of persons. Success in our Union was reached because every officer and every individual member performed her duty and contributed her share.
I	wish to congratulate our new Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Claudei Okorn, O.F.M. and all Supreme Officers elected at the 11th National Convention in Milwaukee. A new officer always brings new ideas, new plans and a new life. To our retiring Officer, Mrs. Sumic, much gratitude.

The annual Zveza Day will again be observed this year in Lemont at the “Mary Help” Shrine. Those attending are to meet at 10 a.m. in front of the Baraga Home. At 10:30 a procession will start composed of Supreme Officers, members and friends. The Choral Club of Branch No. 2, Chicago, which is to sing the litany and other songs dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, will lead the procession to the Grotto. At ll a.m. Holy Mass will be offered. In the afternoon, out-door entertainment. Everyone is invited from near and far, to attend.
In conclusion, I ask your assistance in all our future endeavors and I will be deeply grateful for every bit of kindness shown. I will be ready at all times to work for all-around success.

Topping the list is Mrs. Mary Otoničar, long-time secretary of Branch No. 25 in Cleveland and our Supreme Auditor. She has reached the 1000 mark—a most unattainable goal! Mrs. Otonicar’s career with the Union dates from charter membership in the branch which celebrates their 30th anniversary soon. May she always be blessed with the respect and love of her sisters. We know that in regard to her capabilities as a Supreme Officer, Mrs. Otoničar has always been a person of the highest integrity and understanding, constantly striving for progress and unity for the Union. ACTIVITIES
ZVEZA DAY — JULY 20th!
No. 2, Chicago, 111. — We cordially invite all members and friends of Zveza to the annual pilgrimage and picnic at Lemont, Illinois on Sunday, July 20, 1958. The spectacular candlelight procession from the church to the Grotto will take place on Saturday evening. This is a memorable event and all who have time to drive up to St. Mary’s Hill on Saturday evening should not miss it.
On Sunday we will gather for the procession which procedes the Holy Mass at the Grotto at 10:30 a.m. In front of the Baraga Home. Pleas© be there on time because the procession will start at 10:30 and Holy Mass at
11	a.m. Our Choral club will lead in singing and will also sing at the Holy Mass accompanied by Dr. Alfred Fish-inger at the organ.
Following the Mass a delicious chicken and veal roast dinner will be served at the Baraga home and refreshments will be available at the outdoor Pavilion. Races for the children will start at 1:30 p.m. on the grounds near the Pavilion. Benediction will be at the church at 2 p.m. A variety program will be presented near the Pavilion at 3 p.m. Beautiful prizes will be given away at the Hooligan stand. The picnic is planned for the enjoyment of all and we hope that the attendance will be large.
A chartered bus will leave from To-mazin’s, 1902 W. Cermak Rd., at 9:00 a.m. on Sun., July 20th. Tickets ($1.50 round trip) are available at Tomazin’s
and Mrs. J. Železnikar (VI. 7-6891).
No doubt that many of the participants will stop at the grave of our late Spiritual Advisor Father Alexander and pay their tribute to our great friend who departed too soon from our midst. The cemetery is close to the little Lake Bled.

At the last meeting we welcomed a new member Miss Mary Reich, recommended by secretary Mary Muller. Miss Reich and Josephine Amon took the oath and became our new members. We hope more will be joining in the new campaign which opened on July 1 and will close on Dec. 31, 1958.
In May we lost a dear member Rose Bahor who is survived by a daughter, two sons, many relatives and friends.
—	In April death took away John Densa, beloved husband and father of our member Mary Densa. — Sadness also entered the home of our member Molly Oleferchik. Her son Thomas was the victim of a plane and Jet collision near Philadelphia in May.
To all the bereaved we extend our deepest sympathy. May the souls of the dearly departed rest in peace.

No. 2, Chicago, III. — A little late,
but as the saying goes—better late than never. First of all, I want to thank everyone who attended our Bowling Tourney. Congratulations to all the winners. And, to the wonderful cooks, for the delicious dinners, that were served by our waitresses. Least but not last, to our bartenders, thanks to the ladies who worked at our Hat Sale, I hope that you all enjoyed it very much.
A bus was reserved for the convention Mass and Banquet, on May 18th in Milwaukee, Wis., and everyone who attended had a very good time. The play was wonderful and enjoyed by all; many of our Chicagoans said, had I known about it I would have gone, too. Those attending were:	Sophie

I understand every one had a good time. The delegate from Elmhurst, Mrs. Remec, also traveled to Milwaukee with our bus. Thanks to all for your wonderful cooperation and help when needed.

No. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — Hello, again from Pueblo, Colorado! The attendance at our May meeting was very gratifying and Pres., Anna Pachak expressed her sincere thanks to all the members present. After the business portion of the meeting was dispensed with, a party along the Mother’s Day theme was enjoyed by all. Hostesses for the occasion were the officers. Mrs. Novak was the recipient of a prize given to the oldest mother present. Several door prizes were given to juvenile members and adults as well. Sisters Frances Simonich and Anna Pachak were presented with corsages in recognition of their untiring efforts toward making our lodge a better one. Refreshments were served and the entertainment for the evening was provided by several juvenile members. Of course, no party of ours is complete without Father Daniel and his popular accordion.
Our recent games party and apron sale proved to be a success both socially and financially, and a big „Thank you” is due to all who in any way contributed toward making it such a success.
Summer will probably see a lull in our activities but we’ll try to keep you posted from time to time on branch meetings, etc.

Born December 10th, 1879 Died March 28th, 1958
Place of birth: Stauča Vas near Žužemberk, Dolenjsko, Jugoslavia.
He was the son of Joseph and Ursula (Legan) Fabian and brother of Rose Fabian, Joseph Fabian, Josephine (Fabian) Vidic and Anton Fabian. Only Joseph (formerly of Wis.) and Anton Fabian of Chicago survive.
In the year 1903 he came to America and became a naturalized citizen on March 13th, 1914. He was married on February 3rd, 1907 at St. Stephen’s Church in Chicago with Rev. Anton Sojar officiating. His late wife, Mary (Koncilja) Fabian was born in Sadinja Vas near Žužemberk, Dolenjsko, Jugoslavia and died February 23rd, 1953 at the age of GS years.
Mr. Fabian established his place of business at 1932 W. Cermak
Road in Chicago, 111., in 1911 — as a tailor, making men’s suits to order and also carried merchandise in the line of men’s wear. Later, he started the cleaning and dyeing business which he continued during the last twelve years.
He had been in business for 47 years at the same location until just four months prior to his death. He moved into a new home with his daughter, Helen, at 5600 So. Nashville Ave., Chicago.
Mr. and Mrs. John Fabian were the parents of five daughters: Mamie, the eldest, died at the age of seven; Mrs. Evelyn Tome; Mrs. Helen Weble (husband John Web-le passed away Dec. 29th, 1951); Mrs. Isabelle Michals and Mrs. Wilma Sejud. They were the grandparents of 10 grandchildren: Adrienne and Pamela Tome; Wendy, Sandra-Jo, Thomas J., David, and Randall Michals; and Charles, Warren and Karen Sejud.
In his early years he was quite active in various Slovene Societies and also sang as a tenor with “Lira” Singing Society. He loved to sing and enjoyed being with friends who would gather around in a group singing.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Society, No. 1, K.S.K.J.; Zarja; Slovenian Camp 16211, Modern Woodmen of America and Slovenian American Radio Club.
Mrs. Mary Fabian was a member of Slovenian Women’s Union of America No. 2 Chicago, as are her daughters and grandchildren.
The funeral Mass for Mr. Fabian was held at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Church on March 31st, 1958. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
May God Almighty bestow everlasting joy to the soul of this Slovenian pioneer.
No. 7, Forest City, Pa. — Congratulations to all graduates of Forest City and vicinity and to all others who are following their chosen vocations.
Our branch wishes to send best wishes to Mrs. Anna Kameen, who is ill at her home. She loves to see her friends visit her.

No. 14, Cleveland, Ohio. — Our two
delegates to the 11th National S.W.U. Convention brought news to our members present at the June meeting.
Branch No. 14 feels honored that Mrs. Frances Globokar remains our Supreme Vice-President.
We are always happy to hear that our sick members are doing better. And, to those who are still sick and unable to get around, we wish a speedy recovery.
A long-time member, Mrs. Jennie Punchoh, passed away in March. To the family, we express our deepest sympathy. God grant her eternal rest!
Mrs. Mary Stražišar and Mrs. Anna Mukavetz donated toward the "good time treasury.”
At this point I must congratulate Albert Smrekar, brother of our member, Mrs. Diane Bergant. Albert is a blind, 19 year old pianist and a winner of the 1958 Beryl Rubinstein Scholarship of the Cleveland Institute of Music. All the music he plays on the piano is written in Bl-aille. Lots of good luck to you, Albert!

No. 20, Joliet, III'. — Our last meeting in May was held on the fourth Sunday instead of the third, since our three officers attended the Convention and then gave their reports.
At this meeting our mother of this year was honored: Mrs. Mary Lesnik, was given a beautiful corsage from Mrs. Emma Planinšek in behalf of the branch. She was placed in an honorable seat next to the president during this meeting. Also some gifts were presented to her. Many congratula-
tions have been extended to Mrs. Lesnik, and we all wish her many years of health and happiness. At this meeting a lunch was served in honor of all mothers, and the door prize was taken by Mrs. Mary Rogel. Also movies were shown by yours truly, this time from Jugoslavia and Italy. On this same Sunday in May we showed another reel of the local news such as the vacationing of my family in Camp Shibagama in Wisconsin, the funeral of my father, the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Benedik and our visit to Rensoulin, Indiana. In conclusion of our celebration, the singing club under the direction of our president and director, Mrs. Jennie Sprengel, sang a few very touching Slovenian songs. Our meet-
ing at this point came to a conclusion.
After the recent convention, Mrs. Bara Kramer of San Francisco, Calif, visited Joliet and was the guest of Mrs. Jo Goran. Mrs. Jennie Benedik who was a trustee for many years and a vice-president. The guest of honor, Mrs. Bara Kramer, was presented a corsage by the president in behalf of the officers present. The evening was very delightful, and we all hope that we shall again gather at such an occasion soon in the future. We also hope that Bara will fulfill her promise to be back next year.
Since Mrs. Prisland was on the ocean that evening on her current trip, and also had her first supper that evening, we all thought of her and each signed her name on a card with best wishes for a very good time abroad and in Slovenia. This card will be waiting for her at her Ljubljana address upon her arrival.
Our members mourn the loss of their dear ones: Mrs. Theresa Lilek, age 84, is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Theresa Marentich, and Mrs. Steve Kness, both our members, and Mrs. Mae Millerin and Mrs. Ernest Francescon. Also, by three sons, one of them, Anthony, is a Justice of Peace.
Mrs. Helen Janke, who is the wife of our former mayor, Arthur Janke, and their two daughters, who also are our members, mourn the loss of her mother, Mrs. Mallon.
Bertha Kennick lost her father, Albert Mutter, at the age of 86 years. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Joanne Kennick. Mr. Mutter has been ailing for a long time, the
last four years he was totally blind and the last year also suffered with cancer. All of this he has suffered without complaint and at all times being cheerful.
As I am writing, I have been notified of the passing away of our sister, Mrs. Anna Buchar, from 606 N. Broadway, age 9G. She was born July 4, 1871 in Police, p. Grosuplje, Slovenia. She passed away June 8, 1958. Joined Zveza Nov. 18, 1928, recommended by Mrs. Mary Buss. She had been a member almost from the beginning. If she lived another month she and her husband who survives her, would be celebrating their 65 wedding anniversary. Her husband Matthew is now 96 years of age and still in good health. She is also survived by four daughters, Mrs. (Mary) Fred Braddock, and Anne both from Cleveland, Ohio, Stefie and Josephine from Joliet, and five sons, Thomas, Alexander, William and Benny and Robert who is attomey-at-law in Joliet. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two preceded her in death.
Her daughter Josephine is a longtime member of the branch and has been with the bowling team for many years and also an officer of the bowling league. Our members as usual prayed at the bier and accompanied her on the last journey. May she rest in peace and may she be rewarded in heaven. To the bereaved family we extend our condolences.
On June 14, two of our members, Mrs. Louise Nasenbeny and Mrs. Ursula Ambrose will leave on a plane to visit Europe, with the Rev. Hajnsek’s group, where they will stop to visit Fatima, Lourdes, Rome and Yisarje on the boundary of Italy and Jugoslavia. They will then proceed to Slovenia where they will visit their relatives for the first time since leaving their homes many years ago. For Mrs. Ambrose this visit will also be a very happy reunion for her and her sister in Mima Peč, who, yours truly visited just two years ago. At that time, a special request was made, to have her sister, Mrs. Ambrose, come to visit her again. This wish will be granted at this occasion and I am sure it will be a dear and happy reunion. May both Mmes. Nasenbenny and Ambrose have a very happy and safe journey and with many happy memories of their trip come back among us safely.
Our next meeting will be in September. Members please note and have your dues paid to date; it is to your advantage that you do not neglect this important duty.
To all members who are sick this month we wish them speedy recovery and to all the healthy members of the branch may their summer months be joyful and entertaining, and hope to see you all in September.

No. 23, Ely, Minn. — Dawn Club. —
Our banquet was held at the Jugoslav National Home, May 21 at 6 p.m. served by the Maid Rite Cafe. It was a delicious chicken dinner with everything that goes with it. We all received a Key Chain as a souvenir.
The tables were decorated with beautiful pink roses and pink candles in holders, which were given through the courtesy of Mrs. Barbara Brennan, as it was their wedding anniversary the same time.
We held our meeting after the dinner, it being our regular meeting night.
Pres. Rose Pucel opened meeting with prayer. A donation of $25 was given to the Centennial Committee, which will be held in our city July 4-6th. We and the branch are planning on entering a float in the Centennial parade, the most beautiful if possible. Mrs. Barbara Brennan, Mrs. Ann Rowe and Mrs. Barbara Rosan-dich compiled the biography of the Slovenian Women’s Union and Dawn Club, for the booklet.
We had a bake sale May 23, which was a success. We wish to thank you all for your donations.
Our outing, which we have in the fall, is in charge of the following: Mary Evanich, Janette Vidmar, Mary Starkovich, Molly Krall, Molly Richards, Angela Erchull, Christine Grahek, Ann Rowe, Ann Levar and Mary Skufsa.

brought back wonderful memories of our 11th National Convention. We can be proud of being members of such a grand organization and thankful for the intelligence of our Spiritual Director and Supreme Officers.
I can’t help but think of all the hard work Br. 12, 17, 43 of Milwaukee and West Allis, Wis. had, to give the delegates such a warm welcome and reception during our stay there.
The accomodations and schedules of trips we made were wonderful. The delicious food just can’t be given too much praise. They are to be commended for their gala banquets and for their arrangement of trips, especially the one to Holy Hill, Wis., where Benediction was offered by Fr. Okorn, our Spiritual Director and the choir was directed by Ernest Maj-henich (a former Duluthian). Everyone joined in singing the Litany, which was very impressive.
The officers and delegates were all very friendly whether we had already met before or not. It was nice to be with such a wonderful group from Minnesota and hope to see you all again on Minnesota Zveza Day to be held in Duluth, Aug. 31st, 1958.
Also, I was so surprised to be given the honor of being elected as a Supreme Officer in the position of 3rd Supreme Auditor. I will do my utmost to fulfill my obligations to the best of my ability. Thank you all for giving me your confidence.

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. — Mrs. Edward Dragavon presided at the meeting of our branch on Wednesday evening, May 20. Besides routine business, a contribution was voted to the Cancer Fund.
Also, as in previous years, our branch burns a large vigil light in our church at the Blessed Virgin Altar in May and at the Sacred Heart Altar in June to honor our Blessed Mother and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
It was decided to discontinue meetings during the summer months when members are scattered and away during vacation time; meetings will resume in September, with hostesses at that time, Mines. Joseph Gornick, Joseph Skala and Victor Tonko. During this time dues should be paid directly to the treasurer, Mrs. Mary Pahula.
Following the meeting a social hour was enjoyed with prizes in Cootie going to Mrs. Edward Dragavon and Mrs. Ludwig Mesojedec, and in "500” to Mrs. Vaida and Mrs. Louis Chia-botti.
A delicious lunch was served at the conclusion of the evening by the hostesses, Mmes. Michael Musich, William Vollendorf and Mrs. John Tekautz.
We were fortunate in being able to have a Mission this month at our parish which commenced on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, and continued for a week, closing with evening services, Benediction and the Apostolic Blessing on Sunday, May 18. The Mission was conducted by Rev. Mark Mindrup, O.F.M. Conv.

hold religious instruction classes for several weeks. Following the instruction, there will be Solemn Holy Communion for all third graders, and the Administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to all 7th, 8th and 9th graders. In our parish we have Confirmation every 3rd year, thus Confirmation is received while the students are in Junior High School.
There are 14 Catholic students in our Senior Class who will graduate this year, and these students together with their Catholic teachers were honored at a Communion Breakfast at the Marjo Hotel on Sunday, June 1; the breakfast being sponsored by the Council of Catholic Women, each year.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio.—Our branch had a full attendance at the May meeting. Our hostesses, Sophie Poash and Mary Bencin proved their kitchen art by serving the most delicious kind of pastry: Lemon chiffon, pie and coffee.
As it was guest night, Jennie Stlbil brought along another guest; a visitor, Elsie Baraga, who came all the way from Mexico City, Mexico; she is a very charming girl and speaks four languages.
As her birthday was just around the corner, we all sang happy birthday to Elsie and enjoyed the nut torte Agnes Trebar baked in her honor.
Mary Hocevar’s popularity has grown since she became “Mother of the Year” for our branch. Congratulations are coming her way ever since her picture appeared In the May issue of the Zarja.
Since Mary Kobe became Grandma again, she has been a very busy lady; we sure miss her at our meetings.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio. — Dear Sisters: After our June meeting we will have a vacation, so to speak, and not have any meetings in July and August. Our meeting night may be changed from the 2nd Monday to the 3rd. A definite report will be made later. The meetings will be held at the newly decorated club room at St. Vitus School where we have been having our meetings since the first of the year. At our June meeting, the hostesses for our lunch were Ann Molnar and Carole Traven. Served were delicious Danish Pastries baked by Ann, and can that girl bake! She surely has the knack of turning out very delicious rolls. I envy you, Ann. A door prize was taken by Mary Hočevar.
One of our Junior members, Sally Trunk, graduated from Notre Dame Academy. We wish you the best of luck, Sally, in whatever career you will undertake after graduation. Graduation is a happy time for a student and I know there is gladness for the parents; but for the Trunks it was also a time of sadness because Josephine’s husband, Emil, our good friend and one of our diligent workers, (at the last Convention held here in Cleveland) is very seriously ill. He was taken to the hospital the day after Sally’s graduation. He needs our prayers, so let us all pray for his quick recovery.
Our delegate to the Convention, Antonia Tanko, just kept right on going after it was over. She and her husband, Tony, left Milwaukee for a visit to her birthplace, Chisholm, Minn., where her family lives, and then on to the West Coast for a nice long vacation. She will be gone all summer. Hope you will enjoy yourselves, Mr. and Mrs. Tanko!
Your President, Frances Sietz, and I attended the Convention in Milwaukee, and we wish to thank our S.W.U. sisters in Milwaukee for their hospitality. It made our stay there very pleasant. We want to thank Ann Slapnik for surprising us with those beautiful orchid corsages which were delivered at the hotel. Thanks, Ann!
Stanley Marin, husband of Mamie, is still walking around on crutches after his serious fall in which he broke his leg. To him, we also wish a total and quick recovery.
In September, the Sunday after Labor Day, plans are underway to have a dinner at the farm of Rose Lapp in Geneva. More will be written on this; but plan to come ladies and bring your husbands and families. We have been told what delicious meals are served there and the nice time we can have. So, keep it in mind; the Sunday after Labor Day. Reservations will have to be made, so call me during the middle of August.
Our branch is selling delicious candy called “KATTYDIDS” to help our treasury. It,sells for $1.50 a can and it is a chocolate covered pecan such
as most of us know under the name of turtles. Anyone interested call me and I will deliver. Thank you.

No. 52, Kitzville Loc., Minn. — Dear sisters; here we are with another month before us. And, I would like to say, that I am sorry that I was unable to make a report last month because our meeting was held at a late date. But, I will try to bring you up to the events of the day.

geline Hrovat, and Frances Shega. They all remarked as to what a wonderful time was had by all. Sister Rose Chiodi gave us a full report on the events of the days. We were all told that our rates will be increased five cents a month starting January 1959. Also, starting July 1, 1958 we are having a Membership Campaign; so, please try to do your best and bring in a friend. Thus our President, leading in prayer, brought our business session to a close.
The social of the evening took place with hostesses: Frances Shega, Evana Prelesnik, Mary Musech and Mary Wright. They outdid themselves with a nice lunch of walnut potica and "po-hanje” in the typical style of our Slovenian woks. Games were played with honors going to sisters Josephine Oswald, Angeline Russ, Celia Pali-tano, Julia Mancus, Betty Strazishar, Florence Techer, Verdella Musech and Frances Shega. Thus ended a delightful evening.

No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. — Our May
meeting attendance was very successful. Pres. Ann Satovich called the meeting to order by saying a prayer which was followed by the Secretary’s report and Treasurer’s report.
We celebrated with our Mother-of-the-Year, Mamie Valeri. Mary Drobnik made and presented her a beautiful red ribbon rose corsage. She also gave six pink daisy corsages to the past honored mothers of our branch: Frances Prosnick, Ursula Zaic, Amelia Domen, Caroline Kozina, Jenny Bu-char and Ann Staudohar. Pres., Ann Satovich read a verse to the honored mothers.
A membership drive is taking place from July on, so each member is to try to bring in a new member before Dec. 31st.
We also have some sick members to whom we wish speedy recovery.
Our next Minnesota Day will be celebrated on Aug. 31st in Duluth, Minn. Hope many of us will be able to attend and celebrate the day with us. At the close of the meeting, President Ann Satovich gave a reading of “Mother.”
The Park Addition girls served a delicious lunch; potted plants were used for table decorations. In closing, we played games and sang some songs.
On May 16 a group of us left for Milwaukee to attend the 11th National S.W.U. Convention. We arrived there on Saturday morning. On Sunday we attended Mass at St. John the Evangelist church; then went to the banquet. The convention was from Monday through Wednesday. Dinners and programs were arranged by the three Milwaukee branches. We especially enjoyed their meals and stage shows. On Monday, we went on a tour to Holy Hill, Wis. Shrine. Tuesday after the convention proceedings, we went on a tour of Pabst. Blue Ribbon Brewery. Wednesday was closing of convention and at 9:30 in the evening we were on our way home to the Range.
Mrs. Kramer from California won the beautiful doll dressed in Slovenian costume and donated by Supreme Secretary, Al'bina Novak. Also Mrs. Novak’s mother was celebrating her 80th birthday during the convention and she was presented with a nice new purse and corsage by the convention delegates and guests.
We had a wonderful time and the weather was perfect. Also Milwaukee has some wonderful cooks whom we won’t forget.
We arrived home safely and still talking about the nice time we had in Milwaukee.

Our June meeting was held at the lovely home of Henrietta Hensee. Henrietta and her sister, Sally, were very nice hostesses. Roasted wieners, potato and macaroni salad, relishes, and many delicious pastries were served to the ladies attending. The tour of your beautiful home was enjoyed very much, Henrietta.
During our business meeting, Kay Yuratovac gave an interesting report on her attendance at the convention.
A reminder to all the ladies that there will be no meetings in July and August. The next meeting will be held on September 8th, due to Labor Day falling on our regular meeting day. The meeting will be held at Caroline Wisnewski’s home. Let’s keep up the large attendance as we have done thus for this year.

Sister Katalinich is home now, recuperating from a serious operation. Her husband, too, is confined to his bed and we hope they both enjoy very quick recoveries.
We know that all our sisters had a nice time in Milwaukee, and just wish that next time, we may be able to be with you.
Attention, Cleveland! I would like to know the whereabouts of the children of the late Mrs. Kos, who was a sister to Mrs. Jennie Smith of Livingston, Montana and died two years ago. The daughters, my cousins, had the maiden name of Blazic and they came from Dolenja Vas, Ribnica, Slovenia.

No. 89, Oglesby, lit. — Our branch commemorated the 20th anniversary with a banquet at Deer Park Country Club. There were about 70 persons present, including a number of members from our neighboring Branch 24 in La Salle. Our organizer, Mrs. Mary Jazbec was present, as well as charter members, Frances Nemeth, our president and Mary Ambrose, Vice-President, Louise Kemz, Treasurer and Mary Cenkar, Recording Sec’y. They were presented lovely gifts in remem-
brance of their work. The guests of honor included, Supreme President, Josephine Livek, who was given a corsage of red roses and the branch’s Mother of the Year, Mrs. Caroline Dawson also presented with a corsage. Participating in the program was junior member, Sharon Hobneck with several accordion selections. The tables were arranged in a XJ-forma-tion and were decorated with flowers.
The son of Mary Reith was kind enough to take some pictures which we will see at the next meeting.
Speedy recovery to Anna Perch who is confined at St. Mary’s Hospital in La Salle, and Anna Antlcowich who is home from the hospital.

No. 100, Fontana, Cal.—Our Mother of the Year, Mrs. George Mayzak was honored by a surprise party, and a lovely gathering it was. Mrs. Mayzak was so overcome with emotion that she barely spoke all evening, but don’t let that mislead you in thinking that we had a quiet night; quite the contrary! To begin with, we listened to the lovely voices recorded by the Choral group of Branch No. 2, then we had songfest of our own led by Mrs. Frank Omerzo and Mrs. Mary Železnikar. I might add at this point that it’s fortunate for Branch No. 2 that they’re so far away else we would give them stiff competition!
At our last meeting, it was decided that we hold a picnic in July and it is to be an annual affair with prizes for the children and a monetary gift for the adult holding the lucky number. So ladies, get busy on your strudels, poteezas and all your favorite dishes as it is to be a potluck picnic. Gather up the children, don’t forget Pa, and will be seeing you at Lytle Creek Park.

Amazing how beautiful everything looks outdoors; and really in just about a month’s time it has blossomed. Isn't nature wonderful? Let’s enjoy it, even if it’s only in your back yard.

Druga polletna seja direktoric se je pričela v torek, 15. aprila 1958, ob pol desetih dopoldne ob navzočnosti sledečih: Josephine Livek, predsednica; Marie Prisland, tajnica finančnega odbora; Albina Novak, tajnica; Josephine Železnikar, blagajničarka; nadzornice; Mary Otoničar, Katie Triller in Josephine Sumic.
Glavne nadzornice pregledajo poslovne knjige, račune in čeke ter se nato skupno z ostalimi direktoricami podajo v Metropolitan State banko, da čekirajo vse hranilne vloge in obveznice, shranjene v varnostnem predalu banke. Vse Zvezino poslovanje je v lepem redu. Pravtako so pregledane knjige upravnice Zarje in predsednice Šolninskega in dobrodelnega odbora. Vse poslovanje je v lepem redu.
Popoldne se prične glavna seja, ki se nadaljuje in zaključi v sredo, 16. aprila. Zapisnik vodi glavna tajnica.
POROČILO GLAVNE PREDSEDNICE
Cenjene direktorice: Sprejmite mojei tople pozdrave v upanju, da bi naša prva pol-letna seja v letu 1958 rodila kar najboljše sadove v korist članstva in organizacije.
11. redna konvencija se bliža in priprave so v polnem teku za uspeh iste. Konvenčni odbor v Milwaukee je sklical sejo v marcu, na katero smo bile povabljene tudi gl. tajnica in jaz. Odbornice in članice podružnic št. 12, 17 in 43 so v polnem soglasju in sem prepričana, da bo vse najboljše pripravljeno.
V	novembru srno obiskale več podružnic v Ohio in Pennsylvaniji, kjer smo srečale več odličnih odbornic in članic.
Lepa vzpodbuda je dana članicam vsako leto, ko za Materinski dan počastimo naše najbolj zaslužne matere. Naše članice ne delajo samo za Zvezo, ampak tudi za cerkev, naselbino in potrebne; moremo biti ponosne na take članice, kakršne imamo v Zvezi.
Vse-narodna tekma v kegljanju je lepo uspela; mnogo prijateljev je bilo prisotnih in zdi se mi, da je to najbolj priljubljen šport, ki bi mogel biti pot, po kateri bi mogle pridobiti mnogo novih članic.
Naš pevski klub podr. št. 2 nam more biti za vzgled zaradi dobrega predvajanja kjerkoli nastopi, kar je koristno za Zvezo.
Mnoge podružnice bodo to leto proslavljale olbletnice svoje ustanovitve, nekatere jih bodo preložile na čas po konvenciji. Nadaljevati bi morale po isti poti, kakor so ustanoviteljice, katere bodo zasluženo počaščene v teh spominskih dneh.
Dne 16. februarja smo bile povabljene na proslavo 30-letnice ustanovitve podr. št. 16 v So. Chicago. Glavne odbornice, urednica in športna direktorica smo se udeležile slavnostnega banketa, kakor tudi poln avtobus članic podr. št. 2. Čestitke podružnici na lepi prireditvi, vsem odbornicam za vzorno delo in še mnogo uspehov.
Čestitke veljajo tudi urednici Corinne Leskovar za urejevanje naše dične revije, na katero smo vse ponosne; toda ona bo prisiljena zaradi pomanjkanja prostora omejiti nekatere članke. Upam, da bodo razumele, kadar je primorana odložiti članek za naslednjo številko, razlog je v pomanjkanju prostora.
Razposlala sem pisma vsem podružnicam za praznike s prošnjo, da poživijo Predkonvenčno kampanjo; drugo pismo je v pripravi.
Čestitam predsednici odbora nadzornic, Mrs. Otoničar iz Clevelanda, ki je zopet postavila rekord s pridobitvijo
49	novih članic v sedanji kampanji. Hvala njej in vsem, ki so delale v kampanji.
Slišale bomo poročilo našega finančnega svetovalca v pogledu predpisov državnega zavarovalninskega oddelka.

V Dobrodelnem skladu se še vedno nahaja samo $10.00.
Kot Vam je znano, sem vodila zbirko za Mt. Asissi dekliško šolo v Lemontu. Podružnice so prispevala $433.00, od obresti v Šolninskem skladu se je darovalo $117.00. Skupna vsota $550.00. To vsoto sem poklonila častitim slovenskim sestram v Lemontu kot darilo za njih šolo od naših podružnic in Zveze. Na roki imam prisrčno zahvalo č. sestre Mary Margaret, provincialke Mt. Asissi dekliške akademije.
Od naše zadnje seje sem z nekaterimi gl. odbornicami obiskala podružnice v državi Ohio in Pennsylvania. Navzoča sem bila tudi na proslavi 30-letnice podružnice št. 12 v Milwaukee. Obiski so bili povsod prijetni, srečanje z našimi dobrimi članicami, prisrčno.
Naše sedanje zborovanje bo silno važno. Urediti bo treba vse potrebno za konvencijo, kakor pomeniti se o nasvetih, ki jih delegacija pričakuje od odbora direktoric za izboljšanje in nadaljni napredek Zvezinega poslovanja.

POROČILO GLAVNE TAJNICE
Pozdravljam direktorice, zbrane na prvi letošnji glavni seji, ki je obenem tudi zadnja pred konvencijo.
V preteklem pol-letu je bilo izredno veliko smrtnih slučajev, posebno v razredu A, kjer je bilo za 103 smrtne slučaje izplačanih $10,300.00, to je za $250.00 več, kot so znašali prispevki. Tudi v bodočnosti ni pričakovati prebitka v tem razredu, ker je povprečna starost članic precej visoka in s tem umrljivost velika. V razredu B so bili trije smrtni slučaji, za katere je bilo izplačanih $550.00; prebitek v tem razredu znaša $5,139.75. V mladinskem oddelku ni bilo smrtnega slučaja in je sklad narastel za vsoto $1,628.30. Točen pregled vseh dohodkov in izdatkov je bil objavljen v angleškem delu.
V Predkonvenčni kampanji je bilo vpisanih 408 članic, po zaključku kampanje v februarju in marcu pa še na-daljnih 22. Poročilo o izidu te kampanje jei bilo objavljeno v marčevi in aprilski Zarji. Največ novih članic je vpisala Mrs. Mary Otoničar, predsednica nadzornega odbora, po številu 48; na drugem mestu je Mrs. Christine Menart, s 25 novimi članicami. Več kot deset novih članic je bilo vpisanih pri podružnicah: št. 25, Cleveland, O., (55); št. 2,
Chicago, 111. (27); št. 7, Forest City, Pa. (25); št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. (23); št. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. (19); št. 100, Fontana, Cali£. (17); št. 73, Warrensville, O. (13); št. 16, So, Chicago, 111. (12); št. G3, Denver, Colo. (11); št. 23, Ely, Minn. (10); št. 89, Oglesby, 111. (10). Te podružnice bodo prejele gramofonsko ploščo (Long Play), katero je izdal Pevski zbor podr. št. 2, Chicago. Upam, da sei bo marsikatera članica, ko bo slišala te lepe narodne pesmi, odločila za nakup te edine Zvezine plošče, katero so požrtvovalne pevke same izdale in založile. Nagrade posameznim kampanjskim sodelavkam bodo odposlane v začetku maja, ko poteče doba treh mesecev po zaključku kampanje.
Trideset let obstanka vsakega društva je lepa doba in prav je, da tudi naše podružnice take obletnice čimbolj slovesno proslavijo. Podružnica št. 12, Milwaukee, je praznovala svojo 30-letnico z banketom 27. oktobra; podružnici št. 14 in 15 sta proslavili 30-letnico v nedeljo,
10.	novembra; podružnica št. IG pa IG. februarja. Odzvala sem se vabilom omenjenih podružnic, in proslave so privabile poleg članic tudi mnogo občinstva in odličnih gostov iz javnega življenja. Ob teh prilikah sem imela priložnost pozdraviti naše pionirke, kakor tudi aktivne odbornice in številne članice, ki se trudijo za obstoj in napredek svojih podružnic in s tem tudi celotne Zveze.
Prodaja zadnje zaloge kuharskih knjig je zaključena in veseli me, da bo prebitek v vsoti $3,574.00 v veliki meri kril prihodnje konvenčne stroške. Z razprodajo je bilo veliko dela in težav, kar razume samo tisti, ki se je s takim delom že ukvarjal. Kot sem omenila že na zadnji seji, sem zaradi nadaljnega povpraševanja zopet izdala in založila izboljšano kuharsko knjigo v manjši zalogi, ki naj bi po razprodaji prinesla Zvezini blagajni nadaljni prebitek v znesku do tisoč dolarjev. Zahvaljujem se vsem, ki ste pri prodaji sodelovale in upam, da boste tudi v bodoče pridno pomagale.
Dne 8. marca sem se udeležila seje konvenčnega pripravljalnega odbora v Milwaukee. Na seji so bile določene podrobnosti glede banketa, prenočišča ter celotnega konvenčnega programa. Ob tej priliki smo si ogledale tudi hotel in zborovalno dvorano. V istem hotelu se je vršila 4. Zvezina konvencija leta 1936. Konvenčni program je bil objavljen v aprilski Zarji in prijavnice za prenočišča sem odposlala delegatkam.
Naš aktuar Mr. Carl A. Tiffany je prejel razne odgovore od držav, v katerih posluje naša Zveza. Udeležil se bo te glavne seje direktoric ter predložil možnosti spremembe čarterja v skladu z zakonskimi predpisi posameznih držav.
Ob zaključku poročila se mi zdi prav, da se spomnim požrtvovalnih in zavednih rojakov, ki so se v kratki dobi drug za drugim poslovili s tega sveta. V decembru je preminul Mr. Anton Grdina st. v Clevelandu; v januarju je Gospod poklical k Sebi patra Kazimirja Zakrajška; dne
9.	februarja pa nas je vsei pretresla žalostna novica o smrti Zvezinega duhovnega svetovalca Very Rev. Aleksandra Urankarja. Njegovi številni članki, nauki in pesmi so bili več let priljubljeno čtivo naših članic. Komaj pred dobrim mesecem, 12. marca, pa si je neizprosna smrt izbrala za svojo žrtev znanega rojaka Mr. August Kollandra. Vsi ti so bili naklonjeni Zvezinemu delovanju in naša organizacija jih bo ohranila v častnem spominu.
Naši ustanoviteljici Mrs. Marie Prisland in soprogu čestitam k zlati poroki ter jima želim še mnogo let družinske sreče. Mrs. Prisland želim tudi srečno pot čez široko morje v rojstno domovino in vesel povratek.

Pozdravljene direktorice, zbrane na današnji seji. Želim, da bi lepo zborovale, ker pred nami je konvencija, ki je naša velika odgovornost. Moje poročilo bo bolj kratko, ker imam bolj obširno za konvencijo.

V zadnjih šest mesecih sem se udeležila proslave v So. Chicagu ob 30-letnici obstanka, kjer je bila prav lepa udeležba. V Chicagu smo imeli kegljaški turnir, kjer smo imele članice od podr. št. 2 dosti dela s postrežbo keglja-čicam in sem tudi jaz sodelovala.

POROČILO PREDSEDNICE NADZORNEGA ODBORA
Po pol-letu smo se zopet zbrale za zborovanje in pregledovanje knjig. Sprejmite moje najlepše pozdrave, h katerim se pridružujejo tudi članice clevelandskih podružnic.
Včeraj smo točno pregledale z ostalima nadzornicama v vaši pričujočnosti poslovne knjige glavne tajnice, glavne blagajničarke ter predsednice Šolninskega in dobrodelnega sklada ter s ponosom poročam, da je bilo vse v najlepšem redu. Isto smo našle vse v točnem redu na banki, kjer smo čekirale vse obveznice in vloge na hranilnicah, katere so shranjene v varnostnem predalu Metropolitan State banke. Knjige urednice smo našle tudi v najlepšem redu in ji čestitamo k vzornemu urejevanju Zarje ter veliko zmožnostjo, ki je občudovanja vredna.
Ko sem nabirala nove članice za Predkonvenčno kampanjo, nisem nikdar mislila, da bom prišla na prvo mesto ob zaključku, ker šemi upala, da bodo pri drugih podružnicah še bolj pridne. Namreč pričakovala sem, da bo kampanja prinesla veliko več novih kot jih je, toda če upoštevamo sedanje gospodarske razmere, moramo biti kar zadovoljne, da smo še tako uspele. Na tem mestu izrekam zahvalo vsem, ki ste se potrudile', ker vem iz lastne skušnje, da agitirati za nove članice ni najlažje delo. Vsem novim pristoplim pa kličem: Iskreno dobrodošle! Bog daj, da boste skupno z nami delovale za večji napredek in koristi Zveze.
V novembru sta dve clevelandski podružnici praznovali 30-letnico z banketom na en in isti dan in je bilo nemogoče iti na obe prireditvi radi razdalje. Šla sem k podr. št. 15, ker smo se razdelile na obe strani in druge so šle k podr. št. 14. Veseli me, da je bila pri obeh zelo lepa udeležba.
Zmeraj poudarjamo, da naj se da mladini prilika do uradov, da se bodo privadile delu, zato sem tudi pri naši podružnici št. 25 priporočala, da se izvoli eno mlajšo za tajnico in to se je storilo. Toda prevzela sem mesto blagajničarke, tako da imam še zanaprej važen posel. Obljubila sem pomagati, kar bo v moji moči, moji naslednici, ki je zelo zmožna in prijazna žena, ki bo gotovo delala čast uradu tajnice. Kot sem doslej, tako bom tudi zanaprej delovala za napredek in dobrobit članic, dokler mi bo zdravje dopuščalo.
Pred nami je 11. redna konvencija. Čaka nas važno delo. Gotovo so pri vseh podružnicah izbrale najboljše moči za zastopnice. Ako se bomo držale lepega gesla: V slogi in ljubezni je moč, potemi bo prihodnja konvencija gotovo prinesla Zvezi še lepše uspehe med ameriškimi rojakinjami. Čas konvencije bo kar naenkrat tukaj in se bomo zopet skupaj sešle, dotlej pa ostanite zdrave!
Naše gl. odbornice so tudi obiskale naše podružnice ob proslavi 30-letnice, za v korist Zveze.

POROČILO DRUGE GLAVNE NADZORNICE
Pozdravljene direktorice, zbrane na tej predkonvenčni seji. Prijetno se je zbrati v največjem upanju, da bomo vse, kar je v naši moči sklenile za napredek SŽZ, vodeč jo do najvišjih idealov, da nudimo članicam kar v največje zadovoljstvo.
Skupno z ostalima nadzornicama smo pregledale računske knjige glavne tajnice, glavne blagajničarke ter pred-
sednice Šolninskega odbora in urednice Zarje. Sporočam, da smo vse točno čekirale ter našle vse v lepem redu. Kakor tudi na banki, kjer ima Zveza svoj predal, smo pregledale Zvezine investicije ter našle vse v lepem redu.
V novembru sem se udeležila z drugimi gl. odbornicami proslav pri večjih podružnicah ob 30-letnici obstoja.
Pri naši podružnici št. 16 se imamo kar lepo. Seje so zelo dobro obiskane, ker so zanimive. Obhajale smo v februarju 30-letnico, ki je izvrstno izpadla. Tudi v kampanjah se potrudimo za nove članice.
Posetila sem tudi kegljaško tekmo v Chicagi.
Naša Zarja je vedno lepša ln zanimivejša, tako da jo vedno težko pričakujemo. Hvala in čestitke urednici. Zelo pogrešamo članke duhovnega svetovalca. Naj mu bo Bog dobler plačnik in naše molitve naj gredo za njim.
Dal Bog, da bi našle pota, ki bi nas privedle do uspešnega delovanja za našo priljubljeno Zvezo.
Tudi moje čestitke Mr. in Mrs. Prisland k zlatemu jubileju zakonskega življenja.

POROČILO TRETJE GL. NADZORNICE
Cenjene članice odbora! Slovenska Ženska Zveza je zgrajena na najvišjih načelih in vse njeno delovanje je vodeno na najboljši način. Drage so-odbomice, mislim, da je Zveza vodena po najbolj sposobnih voditeljicah, katere imajo zaslugo, da se vzdržujejo visoka načela bratstva; kot nadzornica sem našla vso imovino, denar in sklade v najboljšem redu. Na vseh sejah odbora so vse gl. odbornice se izkazale kot najboljše sodelavke, ki imajo pred seboj samo interes Zveze in to v najbolj nesebični meri.
Ponosna sem na članstvo in odbornice Zveze, ki vedno izkazujejo prave vrline sestrstva. Veliko zadoščenje je biti odbornica organizacije, ki ima toliko podružnic živo zainteresiranih v procvitu in medsebojnem razumevanju članic. Čestitam vsem odbornicam in članicam za vzorno delo v teku uspele članske kampanje. Z veseljem moremo gledati v bodočnost, ki bo gotovo uspešna s posebnim ozirom na sklepe, sprejete na konvenciji.
Ob zaključku se zahvalim vsem gl. odbornicam za mnoge izraze prijaznosti in vzorno sodelovanje. Zahvalim se odbornicam podružnic za njihovo zanimanje za SŽZ. Počutim se ponosna, da sem ena izmed premnogih članic Slovenske Ženske Zveze.

POROČILO UREDNICE
Cenjene odbornice:
Moje šest-mesečno poročilo bo kratko, da bo dana možnost več časa za razpravljanje važnih predmetov. Finančno poročilo, katerega predlagam s tem poročilom, dovolj zgovorno govori o prvovrstnem sodelovanju vsega članstva z Zarjo v zadnjih šest mesecih.
V vseh mojih stikih s podružnicami, sem vedno prejela kar najbolj prisrčen odgovor in sodelovanje. V novembru 1957 sem zaprosila odbornice in članice za posebne oglase za 'božično številko. Celotni znesek božičnih oglasov je znašal blizu $400.00, kar je v resnici velika vsota. To je dvignilo v precejšnji meri uredniški sklad, ki znaša danes $862.55. Ta znesek bo zadostoval za bodoče klišeje, poštnino in pisarniške potrebščine za Zarjo.
Z oglasi, darovi in naročninami, ki obsegajo tiskovni sklad in ki ga vzdržujejo pridne članice, morem predlagati, da se plača eno številko Zarje, kar ne bi bilo mogoče storiti drugače. S ponosom morem reči: ena številka Zarje na -32 straneh mesto na 16, bi bil prispevek Tiskovnega sklada v tem letu za SŽZ. In to je bilo omogočeno zaradi lepega odziva najbolj delavnih članic, katerim sem za njihovo naklonjenost zelo hvaležna, kajti tiste članice, ki najmanj pričakujejo od Zarje, pa so najbolj pripravljene ji pomagati. Vem, da bo mnoge mesece prihajalo veliko važnega gradiva za Zarjo, zato bo toliko bolj potrebno z omenjenim skladom omogočiti objavo istega. Predlagam, da se ta posebna izdaja omogoči v enem izmed bodočih mesecev, ki bo najbolj obložen z gradivom.
ZARJA je bila izredno priljubljena tudi pri dopisnicah mnogih podružnic. Število sedanjih dopisovalk presega vse dosedanje. Mesečna poročila tudi od podružnic, od katerih prej nismo slišali, je jasno znamenje, da jim je list pri srcu. Še enkrat se želim zahvaliti vsem: dopisovalkam, ki so pomagale napraviti Zarjo to kar je danes. V prvi vrsti se želim zahvaliti odbornicam podružnic in glavnim odbornicam, ki so v tako izredni meri sodelovale z menoj.
Ne bi mogla zaključiti svojega poročila, če ne bi omenila težke izgube, ki je zadela Zarjo s smrtjo našega duhovnega svetovalca Fr. Aleksandra Urankarja. Kot naš najbolj spoštovan in občudovan mesečni prispevatelj svoje kolone v Zarji, ga bomo vse izredno pogrešale. Sedaj še toliko bolj cenimo njegove vzpodbudne članke in misli, katere je pisal vsaki mesec. Upam, da njegov nauk ne bo nikoli pozabljen, kajti dajal nam je vedno pravilne smernice.
Najboljša voščila vsem odbornicam in upam, da bo seja kar najbolj uspešna.

POROČILO DIREKTORICE ŽENSKIH AKTIVNOSTI
Od zadnje seje smo bile zaposlene kot čebelice v Chicagu. Imele smo mešano tekmo v decembru s 5G pari ter božičnico za mladino naše podružnice z lepimi darili; tudi igre z nagradami. Imamo 12 skupin kegljačic, ki so nastopale na raznih tekmah doma in izven mesta. Podružnica je sodelovala v raznih prireditvah tudi s pevskim klubom. 24 članic je obiskalo 60-letnico podr. št. 16 v So. Chicagu in enako se pripravljajo, da s posebnim busom gredo na konvenčni banket v Milwaukee.
Manjše delavnosti včasih preprečijo, da bi mogla doseči vse, zato večkrat pokličem in govorim z njimi osebno. To je edini način, da morem napraviti kake načrte. Nekatere so tudi obiskale nekaj iger: „V 80 dneh okoli sveta” je bila ena izmed njih. Imele smo posebno ceno in 15 članic se je udeležilo. Upamo, da bodo na ta način postale aktivnejše. Moj predlog je, da bi nekdo šel okoli raznih podružnic ter razložil športno udejstvovanjei, ker se mi zdi, da nekateri ne poznajo vseh pravil in na ta način bi dosegli več športno navdahnjenih ljudi.

Pokonvenčna kampanja
od I. julija do 31. decembra 1958
Drage članice! Sedaj je zopet prilika, da vpišete v Zvezo svoje otroke in povabite prijateljice, da se pridružijo našim vrstam. Mnogo je še žen in deklet, ki bi lahko bile naše članice. Povabite jih! Asesment je malenkosten v primeri z drugimi zavarovalninami in članice imajo veliko možnosti družabnega življenja pri podružnicah ter niso pozabljene v veselih in žalostnih časih. Kampanjske delavke bodo prejele za svoj trud lepe nagrade in njih imena bodo objavljena v Zarji. Vsaka, ki vpiše 50 novih in več, pa si obenem pridobi še trajno priznanje v „Častnem redu”.

Duhovne misli
Boljši način
Vnuk je bil na obisku pri svojem starem očetu, ki je posedoval precej veliko farmo. Kot mestnemu otroku mu je bilo vse novo. Z velikim zanimanjem je šel na raziskovanje, kakor to delajo navadno otroci. Pri nekem takem raziskovanju je naletel na majhno želvo (turtle). Vzel jo je v roko in jo začel ogledovati. Razumljivo jei, da se je želva takoj skrila v svoj oklep. Otrok si ni vedel drugače pomagati, kakor da je vzel majhen količek in poizkušal odpreti želvo.
Stari oče, ki ga je od daleč opazoval, kako se je vnuk trudil, da bi odprl želvo, mu je zaklical: „Ne tako, tako je ne boš nikoli odprl. Daj mi želvo in ti bom pokazal, kako!” Stari oče je nato vzel želvo v hišo in jo položil na toplo ognjišče. V nekaj minutah je drobni živalici postalo vroče in je pokazala noge in glavo ter začela lezti proti otroku.
„Ljudje so podobni tej živalici,” je rekel stari oče. Nikoli nikogar ne sili v nekaj. Sila ni nikoli dobra. Ogrej ga z nekoliko človeške dobrote in razumevanjem in ga boš verjetno pridobil za svoje načrte.
Veliko ljudi je zapustilo Kristusa zaradi hitrega, nepremišljenega in trdega nastopanja proti svojemu bližnjemu! tistih ljudi, ki so bili malo preveč goreči njegovi nasle-dovalci. Kristus sam se nikoli ne vsiljuje, četudi je vedno pri vratih in čaka. Ponižno čaka, dokler mu ljudje ne odprejo vrat svojega srca, da tako lahko vstopi. Kristusov način je način, ki je vreden posnemanja.
Nekoliko o obzirnosti
Kaj je pa to zopet, se morda vprašaš? To je čednost, navada, posebna lastnost srca, ki nam pomaga, da pozabimo samega sebe in mislimo na druge, in sicer tako daleč, da skušamo celo uganiti želje in potrebe svojega bližnjega. Z obzirnostjo človek da košček svojega srca svojemu bliž-njenmi, napravi zanj „extra miljo” in ga prijetno preseneti s kakšnim dobrim delom. Obziren človek se nikoli ne vpraša: Kaj moram storiti, ampak: Kaj je še, kar bi lahko napravil.
Obzirnost je služba bližnjemu. Obziren človek pozabi
samega sebe. S tem, ko človek pozabi samega sebe, prevzame na sebei žrtev, brez vprašanja, koliko ga bo to stalo. Služiti drugemu, je „motto” človeka, ki je pozabil samega sebe. Dekle, ki pride z dela domov in vidi v kuhinji posodo, ki jo je treba pomiti, to stori, ne da bi ji kdo naročil — je obzirna. Fant, ki pokosi travo ali počisti dvorišče in pograbi listje ali očisti družinski avto, nei da bi mu kdo rekel ali bi pričakoval plačila zato — o njem je rečeno, da je obziren.
Obziren človek vedno misli na druge. Ker tak človek misli na druge, zato pošlje naprej hrano pri mizi, ko si je sam postregel, se umakne od vrat pri busu, deli sedež v vlaku ali busu, zatemni luči, ko se približuje drag avto, tudi ne trobi, ko se nahaja v gneči.
Obziren človek daruje košček samega sebe. Francoski pregovor pravi: Nič ne da, kdor ne da samega sebe. Obziren človek ne plačuje z denarjem, ampak z darovanjem samega sebe. Nič ne stane človeka, če da na razpolago nekoliko od svojega časa, pokaže vesel obraz, dobrosrčnost, sožalje, da pogum, da dober nasvet, prinese dobro misel in je hvaležen. Ali daš dolžno priznanje, ali si človek, ki pohvali dobro kosilo, ki ima pohvalo za na novo urejeno pohištvo? Lepo zlikana obleka je prilika za pohvalo. Zahvala ni draga in je del tebe samega. V svetem pismu beremo, da se je izmed desetih vrnil samo eden? Ali si prizadevaš reči ,.hvala lepa” bolj pogosto, kakor je bila to dosedaj navada?
Obziren človek napravi nekaj korakov posebej, da tako stori več, kakor je treba. Treba je poribati tla v kuhinji, in ti poribaš še stopnice v klet za nameček. Treba je iti v prvo nadstropje po škarje, na poti tja zagrabiš še košaro s perilom, ki ga je treba izpeglati. Teh nekaj korakov je kakor zabela na krompirju. Teh nekaj korakov, ki so bili storjeni posebej, niso bili potrebni, ali pomagajo k boljšim odnosom med nami in bližnjim.
Obziren človek napravi nepričakovano uslugo. Hčerka je potrebovala rokavice. Šla je in jih kupila. Kupila pa jih ni samo zase, ampak tudi za mater. Ali ste že kdaj šli skozi park in tam videli majhnega otroka, kako si prizadeva, da bi dosegel vodo	in se	odžejal. Premajhen	je. Vodo	si
škropi po celem	obrazu. Tedaj pa nekdo	pristopi*	ga
dvigne in mu pomaga, da se napije. To je obzirnost.: ■
V	življenju je veliko prilik za izvrševanje čednosti obzirnosti. Če bi le mi te prilike porabili. V evangeljski zgodbi o usmiljenem Samarijanu je Bog poslal tri ljudi, da so opravili delo	enega.	Naj ne bo nikoli slučaja, da	bi
moral Bog poslati koga,	da stori delo, ki bi	ga ti lahko
opravila. Tvoj dom, tovarna, mesto, kjer živiš, bo veliko bolj vesel prostor za življenje in delo, če bo malo več krščanske obzirnosti. Vodi naj nas naslednja misel: Karkoli ste storili kateremu mojih najmanjših bratov, ste meni storili — meni, Kristusu.

Drage odbornice in članice:
Ob sprejemu dolžnosti in odgovornosti najvišjega urada v naši organizaciji za tretji termin se v polni meri zavedam obilice dela in skrbi, ki bodo zopet moj delež. V dobi devet let, v kateri sem poslovala kot Vaša glavna uradnica, sem našla največje zadoščenje v skupnem prijateljstvu, katerega ste mi tako velikodušno poklanjale. Z globoko hvaležnostjo beležim vzorno sodelovanje, katerega sem bila deležna od strani glavnih uradnic, odbornic naših podružnic, kakor tudi od celokupnega članstva. Če bomo skupne in sestrsko vzajemne, nas nobena sila ne premaga ln Zvezin napredek ne bo nikdar ustavljen.
Zveza ni uspeh samo ene osebe ali skupine oseb. Uspeh je v organizaciji vsled tega, ker je vsaka odbornica in vsaka posamezna članica storila svojo dolžnost ter doprinesla svoj del.	;

Vsaka članica se mora zavedati, da je trajna potreba 'za nove članice, ker se mora nadomestiti izguba vsled smrtnih slučajev. Dajmo vsaka pridobiti vsaj po eno novo, ker je kampanja v teku. Dajmo povabiti naše nove priseljenke v našo organizacijo, z veseljem jih sprejmemo.

VABILO NA ZVEZIN DAN V LEMONTU
Št. 2, Chicago, III. — V nedeljo, dne 20. julija 1958 se bo vršil na Ameriških Brezjah, v Lemontu, vsakoletni Zvezin dan in romanje članic SŽZ.
V soboto, 19. julija bo ob mraku procesija z lučkami. Pričela se bo pri cerkvi, odkoder se bo pomikala mimo Baragovega doma in ..blejskega Jezerca” do lurške votline, kjer se bo ob prepevanju Marijinh pesmi ta pobožnost zaključila.
Nedeljski program je sledeč:	Ob
desetih dopoldne zbiranje romarjev pred Baragovim domom, nakar se prične ob pol enajstih procesija k luršld votlini, kjer bo ob enajstih slovesna sv. maša, pri kateri bo pel pevski zbor podr. št. 2.
Opoldne bo kosilo v Baragovem domu, pijača pa bo na razpolago v paviljonu.
Popoldne ob pol dveh se bodo pričele otroške Igre na travniku za paviljonom. Ob dveh bodo večernice v cerkvi in ob treh bo podan program na prostem. Vabljene so vse članice od blizu In daleč in seveda tudi njih soprogi in prijatelji. Samo enkrat na leto je dana ta prilika, da se snidemo na Ameriških Brezjah, se pozdravimo in se spoznamo s članicami In prijatelji z vseh strani Amerike.
Številne naše članice bodo tudi obiskale grob prerano umrlega Zvezinega duhovnega svetovalca Rev. Aleksandra Urankarja. Samostansko pokopališče se nahaja nižje od „blejskega jezera”.

Na zadnji seji je bila vpisana nova članica Mary Reich, katero je priporočala tajnica Mary Muller. Pri sprejemu je bila tudi sestra Josephine Amon.
Načelnice pripravljalnega odbora za Zvezin dan v Lemontu so poročale, da priprave lepo potekajo in bodo vsi navzoči dobro postreženi.
Poseben bus bo odpeljal v nedeljo, 20. julija ob 9. uri zjutraj izpred Toma-zinove gostilne. Vožnja v Lemont in nazaj stane za osebo $1.50 in vozni listki se dobijo pri Tomazinovih in pri Mrs. J. Železnikar (VI. 7-6891).
V maju je umrla naša članica sestra Rose Bahor. Zapušča hčer in sinova ter več sorodnikov. —V mesecu aprilu se je nepričakovano poslovil s tega sveta John Densa, soprog naše članice Mary Densa. Poleg nje zapušča še hčerko in več sorodnikov. — V letalski nesreči, ki je terjala več žrtev, je Izgubil svoje mlado življenje Thomas Oleferchik, sin naše članice Molly Oleferchik. Za njim žalujejo mati in brat ter ostali sorodniki.
Naj blagi pokojni počivajo v miru. Preostalim žalujočim naše sožalje.

Št. 6, Barberton, Ohio. — V nedeljo,
1.	junja smo imele sejo, na kateri pa ni bilo zadovoljive udeležbe. Novic ni posebnih, razen da je tukaj sedaj velika brezposelnost. Vsak teden jih nekaj odpustijo iz tovaren.
Članicam naznanjam, da ne bo do meseca oktobra rednih sej, zato naj tiste, ki hočejo plačati asesment, pridejo k meni na dom. Da pa ne boste zastonj hodile, me prej pokličite po telefonu Sh. 5-3535 in dan je določen za v četrtek popoldne od 1. do 5. ure. Saj veste, da imam bolnika v hiši, zato prosim, da to vpoštevate.

Št. 10, Cleveland, Ohio. — Na majniški seji smo sklenile, da prekinemo s sejami preko poletne dobe. Vzrok je ta, ker se večji del naših članic in odbornic, katere redno prihajajo na seje, poda čez poletje na počitnice. Nekatere so že odpotovale na obisk v domovino, in te so:	naša računska
nadzornica in blagajničarka šivalnega kluba, Millie Novak; druga računska nadzornica in zelo aktivna članica (posebno se zanima za šivalni klub) J. Košir; in tretja je tudi prav dobra in podporna članica Annie Mramor. Vsem tem in drugim, katere se bodo podale na počitnice kamor koli, želim, da bi se prav dobro zabavale in da bi se v jeseni vse srečno vrnile nazaj v naš krog zdrave in vesele, ker čaka nas veliko dela, ako bomo hotele imeti uspeh pri razstavi ročnih del, katero nameravamo prirediti enkrat pozno v jeseni.
Vsem bolnim članicam želim, da bi jim ljubi Bog povrnil zdravje in da bi se lahko veselile poletnih dnevov, ki so tako krasni za tiste, ki se morejo večkrat podati v prosto naravo.
Naše delegatke so poročale o konvenciji v Milwaukee in članicam, ki niso bile navzoče, se priporoča, da prečltajo konvenčno poročilo v Zarji.
Prav lepo se zahvalim članicam za lep dar, ki so mi ga izročile na majniški seji, $10.00 z naročilom, da si kupim nalivno pero. Gotovo so se bale, da bom prenehala pisati članke v našo Zarjo. Vedno mi pravijo, da prav rade berejo, samo pisati pa nobena ne mara. Ravno sem se mislila sku-jati, da ne bom več poročala, s tem sem pa prisiljena še nadalje ostati v tej tako imenitni službi.
Prav lepe pozdrave pošiljam vsem članicam po celi Ameriki in še posebno želim vso srečo v zakonskem življenju mojima osebnima prijateljema Mr. Anton in Mrs. Josephine dušel (prej Puntar). Oba sta Cleve-landčana, sedaj v Cresento, Calif.

Št. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — Vabim vse članice na sejo, 3. septembra, v cerkveni dvorani. Pokonvenčna kampanja se' je začela s 1. julijem in dolž-
nost nas vseh je, da pridobimo nekaj novih članic.
Kruta smrt je zopet posegla v našo sredo in nam vzela članico Fanny Zainer. Pred dvemi meseci je umrl njen soprog in sedaj je odšla tudi Frances za njim. Naj v miru počivata! Preostalim naše1 sožalje.

Št. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — Z radostnim srcem pričakujemo poletni čas, ko se delavnim ljudem nudi oddih iz zaduhlih tovaren v prosto naravo za nekaj tednov počitnic, pa najbo že blizu doma ali v oddaljenih krajih, kakor je komu sreča naklonjena. Rav-notako imamo tudi me članice pri podružnici počitnice. Ustavile smo seje kot vsako leto, za dva meseca: julij in avgust. Upati in želeti pa je, da bi se do septemberske seje vrnile zdrave in v najboljšem razpoloženju. Saj žalostnih dni ne zmanjka, ker smrt tako pogosto posega v našo organizacijo. Zatorej članice ne zamudite društvenih sej, dokler smo še na površju in ne nalagajmo tajnici nepotrebnih opominov. Zavedajmo se, da iz majhne vsote naraste številna, in članice pri podružnici niso dolžne prispevati za drugih brezbrižnost. Samo ena majhna beseda ob pravem času zadostuje tajnici in je vse v redu in mirnim potom urejeno. Ta prijazna beseda je „Ne zmorem” ali ,,Odstopim”. Saj je prosta volja vsake članice, ker s poštenjem pristopi v društvo in s poštenjem se lahko odstrani, ako tako želi. Storite to uslugo vsaj bodočemu odboru, da bo v zadovoljnosti urejeval društvene zadeve brez prerekanja. Katere ostanete pa zveste članice, pa skušajte pridobiti ob priložnosti nekaj novih. Pregovor pravi: ,,Kar lahko danes storiš, ne odlagaj na jutri.” Delujmo v prijateljstvu, da bomo lahko rekle:
Dobro delo smo dokončale,
zdaj bomo pa sladko spale.

Št. 14, Euclid, Ohio. — Težko se je pripraviti k pisanju, posebno če je treba sporočiti žalostno novico. Zopet smo izgubile članico, in to je bila sestra Punčah. Bog ji daj večni mir in pokoj.
Naše delegatke so nam povedale dosti zanimivega s konvencije. Ukrenile smo tudi, da bo treba napraviti zabavo, da se malo podpre blagajna.

Po konvenciji...
Enajsta Zvezina konvencija je uspešno potekla in pester konvenčni program bo ostal udeleženkam v lepem spominu. Vsem, ki so pri tem sodelovali, iskrena hvala!
Na konvenčnem zasedanju so bila podana izčrpna poročila glavnih odbornic, katerih ne bom posebej navajala, ker so objavljena v konvenčnem zapisniku. Hočem pa pojasniti stanje smrtninskih skladov. Kot pri prejšnjih konvencijah, tako je tudi sedaj naš aktuar izračunal solventnost posameznih skladov na podlagi starosti članic. Ugotovljeno je bilo, da je v razredu A povprečna starost članic nad 50 let in umrljivost vsako leto večja. Da se zajamči bodoča izplačila, je bilo nujno potrebno zvišanje asesmenta za pet centov, kar stopi v veljavo s 1. januarjem 1959. Pri tem je treba upoštevati tudi določbo Državnega zavarovalninskega urada, ki zahteva, da se vsak razred vzdržuje s svojimi lastnimi prispevki.
Marsikatera članica je mnenja, da je tekom let že več plačala za asesment, kot pa bo po njeni smrti izplačana smrtnina dedičem. Da ni temu tako, dokažejo sledeči podatki:	Članice v razredu A so plačevale od ustanovitve
Zveze do leta 1943 v smrtninski sklad mesečno 15 centov, in od leta 1943 pa do danes 20 centov. Članice, ki so pri Zvezi 25 let, so torej dosedaj plačale v smrtninski sklad razreda A skupaj 54 dolarjev.
Poleg prispevka za smrtninski sklad plačujejo članice
mesečno 15 centov za naše glasilo Zarja in za poslovne stroške. Ta prispevek bo ostal isti kot dosedaj, kljub temu, da so cene vsaki stvari v zadnjih letih občutno narasle. Že sama Zarja je danes več vredna kot celotni prispevek.
Odkar Zveza obstoja, je bilo izplačanih za smrtne slučaje članic v vseh razredih do $250,000.00. To je velika vsota in izdatna pomoč družinam naših umrlih sester. Za vse dosedaj umrle članice je Zveza izplačala polno zavarovano vsoto in skrbeti moramo, da obdržimo stanje smrtninskih skladov na taki višini, da bo isto mogoče tudi v bodoče. Iz tega razloga ne bo nobena zavedna članica oporekala dodatnim 5 centom k asesmentu, saj je to za njeno lastno korist in za bodočnost naše Slovenske Ženske Zveze.
Zavedati se tudi moramo, danes še bolj kot kdaj prej, da je za obstoj organizacije nujno potrebno pridobivanje novih članic. Me se staramo in danes ali jutri ene ali druge izmed nas ne bo več na tem svetu. Zato poskrbimo sedaj, posebno v Pokonvenčni kampanji, da vpišemo v Zvezo naše hčere, ki nam bodo sledile. Ne pojdimo malodušno mimo tega in ohranimo naši mladini nekaj slovenskega — našo Zvezo, katero smo same zgradile.

zdi se mi, da so kakor čebelice — tako zbirajo skupaj. Prinesle so kar cele košare „sales tax stamps”, posedle okrog mize in kar takoj je bilo vse v redu. Le tako naprej in prosim še druge, da se nam pridružite, ker na naših sejah je res luštno. Ne pozabite na vsak prvi torek v mesecu.

Št. 16, So. Chicago, III. — Kar se
tiče naših sej, so lepo obiskane, seveda bi bilo lepo videti še kaj novih obrazov. Ako bi članice vedele, kako lepo se imamo na naših sejah, bi gotovo prišle v še večjem številu.
S 1. julijem se je pričela Pokon-venčna kampanja. Upam, da se bomo vse potrudile in pridobile kaj novih članic, saj nagrade bodo lepe kot navadno, da se bo vredno potruditi za nove članice, da vsaj nadomestimo vrzeli, ki nastanejo zaradi smrtnih slučajev, katerih je veliko v zadnjem času. Me smo zopet izgubile eno, in sicer Mrs. Buckvich. Pred leti sta šla z možem, ki ima naduho, v Arizono. Njemu je bolje, a ona se ni mogla udomačiti tam, kakor bi bila revica slutila, da bo tam umrla. Pripeljali jo bodo sem, to je bila njena zadnja želja, da bi bila tukaj pokopana. Naše sožalje preostalim. Njej naj ljubi Bog obilo poplača njena dobra dela, me bomo pa molile za pokojne članice.
Konvencija, katera se je lepo vršila v Milwaukee, je za nami. Zelo smo hvaležne Fathru Claudiju, da je prevzel mesto duhovnega svetovalca pri Zvezi in bil ves čas med nami na konvenciji z dobrimi nasveti. Bog plačaj, Father!
Ker bodo vse podrobnosti v zapisniku, se jaz omejim le na to, da prosim članice, naj se nikar ne razburjajo zaradi tistih 5 centov, ki so naloženi. Ni bilo drugega izhoda zaradi velike umrljivosti med članicami.
Zahvalim se vsem, ki so imeli v oskrbi najbo banket ali drugo. Vse je bilo tako lepo urejeno, da smo se v resnici domače počutile. Program je bil izvrsten, akoravno je bil dolg zaradi igre ,.Trije vaški svetniki”. Že dolgo nisem videla igre tako lepo izpeljane in že dolgo se nismo toliko nasmejali. In Holy Hill, kako je bilo lepo peti slovenske pete litanije, katere smo vse prepevale, potem ko smo prišle na vrh in se nekoliko oddahnile. Potem pa zopet večerja v West Allisu. Jaz se moram še posebno lepo zahvaliti Mrs. Plesko in njeni hčeri, ki sta mi tako stregli, ko sem pri njih stanovala. Bog plačaj vsem in vsakemu posebej, ki ste nam pripravili lepe dneve ob času konvencije. Ostali nam bodo v neizbrisnem spominu. Katie
Št. 17, West Allis, Wis. — Konvencija, ki se je vršila meseca maja v Milwaukee, je za nami. Le spomin nanjo nam ogreva srca. Lepa udeležba je bila pri slovesni sv. maši, katero je opravil č. g. župnik C. Okorn. Pevski zbor cerkve sv. Janeza Evangelista je pel ob tej priliki zelo lepo latinsko mašo. Po pobožnosti smo se podali v cerkveno dvorano k banketu. Mize so bile lepo okrašene in servirano je bilo okusno kosilo.
Sledil je konvenčni banket, katerega je vodil od začetka do konca advokat Mr. Šimenc. Hvala lepa! Sledil je ples in prosta zabava.
V	ponedeljek se je začela seja z molitvijo ob navzočnosti č. g. C. Okorna. Popoldne smo se odpeljali z busom na
božjo pot Holy Hill. Vreme je bilo lepo in z nami je šel g. župnik C. Okorn. Je prav dosti stopnic, predno se pride do vrha v cerkev, kjer je lep razgled. Vidi se daleč naokoli. V notranjščini cerkve je zelo lepo in v velikem oltarju je kip Matere Božje. Nji smo se priporočale, da nas obdari z milostmi, ki so nam vsem zelo potrebne. Father Okorn je imel blagoslov in slovenske pete litanije. Čas je hitro potekel in odpeljali smo se na West Allis, kjer nas je čakala večerja in mal program s petjem. Vodil ga je Anton Werbic. Naš župnik Father Set-ničar je nato razkazal delegatkam dvorano, šolo, sestrski dom in cerkev. Naša fara „Marija, Pomoč kristjanov” prav lepo napreduje pod njegovim vzornim vodstvom.
Drugi dan zvečer smo imele priliko ogledati si Pabst pivovarno, kar je tudi precej zanimivo. Vse delajo skoraj samo stroji in delavcev je malo videti. Potem smo imeli razvedrilo in zabavo, seveda tudi s pivom so nam postregli.
Naj še omenim, da sem imela ob času konvencije priložnost seznaniti se z delegatkami iz daljnih krajev Amerike, kakor Mrs. Bara Kramer iz San Francisca, Calif., in Mr. in Mrs. Kastelic iz Kansasa, ter delegatkami iz Minnesote, za katerih imena pa ne vem, ker jih je bilo precejšnje število. Bile so vse prav prijazne.
Naša podružnica št. 17 bo priredila kartno zabavo 28. septembra v novi dvorani. Blazinice so vse ročno delo. Dobiček gre za našo ročno blagajno. Naprošene ste, da se zagotovo udeležite te naše zabave in pripeljite s seboj tudi prijatelje.
V	poletnem času ne bo sej za tri mesece. Srečne počitnice vsem!

prejela. Vse smo ji želele še mnogo let, da bi bila med nami zdrava In vesela, kakor je bila doslej. Bog Te živi, Mary! Na tej seji smo imeli tudi prigrizek na čast materam in pa kazanje filmov. Poleg slik iz Jugoslavije in Italije so bile pokazane tudi domače novice: Naši domači v Camp Shiba-gama v Wisconsinu, nato pogreb mojega očeta ter zlata poroka Mr. in Mrs. Luke Benedik ter obisk v Ren-sullin, Indiana. S tem se je zaključilo kazanje filmov. Naše pevke pod vodstvom podpredsednice in direktorice Jennie Sprengel so pa zapele več lepih slovenskih. Tako se je končalo naše majsko slavje.
Po konvenciji se je mudila v naši sredi več dni naša ustanoviteljica Bara Kramer, katera je bila gost naše prejšnje podpredsednice Mrs. Jo Goran. Nji na čast so en večer se zbrale naše sedanje in prejšnje odbornice, da jo počastijo pri večerji, nji na čast. Zbrane so bile:	predsednica	Jennie
Planinšek, podpredsednica Jennie Sprengel, tajnica Frances Gaspich, zapisnikarica Josephine Erjavec, nadzornica Theresa Muhich in pa Mary Kun-stek, rediteljica. Nato Anna Korevec, prejšnja večletna nadzornica, nato podpredsednica in predsednica, nato je bila prisotna prejšnja dolgoletna tajnica in gl. blagajničarka Zveze, Mrs. Josephine Muster, nato prejšnje podpredsednice: Mrs. Anna Mahkovec, Mrs. Jo Goran ter Mrs. Jennie Benedik, katera je bila tudi večletna nadzornica v gl. odboru ter gost Mrs. Bara Kramer. Najprvo ji je predsednica pripela „corsage”, nato pri dobri izbrani večerji je nam čas le prehitro minul ob spominih na prejšnja leta.
Jacksonville, Fla. — V veselje mi je bilo vzeti v majski „Zarji” sliko moje prijazne, dolgoletne sosede Mrs. Glavič! Čestitam ji, kot izbrani in priljubljeni materi podr. št. 18 SŽZ. Mnogokrat sem v duhu tam na E. 169. cesti, kjer sve sadili in presajali najine pomladne cvetlice v prijateljskem pogovoru — pogrešam tu minule vesele čase... Mrs. Plesec, tudi vrlo poznana v mojem nekdanjem kraju, odlično zasluži čast podr. št. 41, ki je bila odmerjena tej blagi osebi, katero mora vzljubiti vsakdo! Ponosna sem biti njena prijateljica!
Mesec julij naj oblagodari s srčnim veseljem vse naše Ančke na njih go-dovni dan (26tega), gospe:	Morel,
Medveš, Jerina, A. Strukel, Lekan, Goznik, Ann Mergec in Perko (Tampa, Fla.) Na zdravje, drage sosestre, in „ta veliko šalco kofeta” za srečno pri-hodnjost!
V	daljno mladost plovejo leta, ko sem se z vso vnemo učila „voščilo za god” moji dobri tetki Ani; šaljivi stric pa je pomežiknil z očesom, češ:
E,	kaj boš? Kar tisto povej: ,,deb Boh dav, deb v nebesa prišla al’ pa v pek<5v ... Sam pa je zapel nato: An-čica, srček moj...
Čitam v Zarji sklepe in poročila ravnokar minule konvencije! Upam, da se članstvo sprijazni z odloki in da z vnemo pridobiva novih kandidatinj, da bo SŽZ med odličnimi v Ameriki!
Tu v Floridi pripeka žarko sonce že z vso vnemo. Časopisje polni svojo reklamo s tempom sigurnosti, da je raj na zemlji ob športu ribolova in ob Atlantski obali kipečih valov, najprimernejši oddih turistom s širnih krajev. Vsa udobnost se nudi srečnim izletnikom pod našim južnim nebom, torej? Na počitnice kam drugam? Jaz pa končam kot kitajske črke, kljub temu, ako Bog da zdravje, želim videti Ohio in moje drage vnučke tamkaj.

Št. 20, Joliet, III. — Naša majska seja je bila kar dobro obiskana. Bila je preložena s tretje nedelje na četrto v mesecu, to pa radi konvencije, ker so bile tri članice odsotne, in sicer tajnica Frances Gaspich, blagajničarka Jo Sumic in nadzornica Mary Lešnik. Na seji so naše delegatke poročale o izidu konvencije.
Potem smo počastile tudi našo mater za to leto, Mrs. Mary Lešnik, katera je naša nadzornica dolgo vrsto let. Sestra predsednica Enima Planinšek ji je pripela krasen corsage, medtem ko je vaša zapisnikarica ta trenutek posnela s svojo kamero. Častno mesto poleg predsednice ji je bilo od-kazano za to sejo. Tudi nekaj daril je
Ker je Mrs. Prisland na ta dan bila prvi dan na morju, in imela isti čas tudi prvo kosilo, smo se vse navzoče spomnile nanjo in se podpisale na kartico, katero je prejela po svojem prihodu v Ljubljano, želeč ji dobre čase v krasni Sloveniji. Upam, da se bo Bari obljuba mogla izpolniti, da nas prihodnje leto zopet posetl.
Naša delovna članica Theresa Lilek je izgubila svojo mater, staro 84 let, po daljši bolezni. Poleg Therese Ma-rentlch zapušča tudi hčerko Mrs. Steve Knez, katera je tudi naša članica, in pa Mae Millerin in Mrs. Ernest Fran-cescon. Zapušča tudi tri sinove, katerih Anthony je Justice of Peace ali mirovni sodnik. Pokojna Theresa Lilek je imela tudi IG vnukov ter veliko število sorodnikov.
Dalje je izgubila mater Mrs. Mallon, Mrs. Helen Janke, katera je soproga našega prejšnjega župana Arthur Janke. Zapušča tudi vnukinji, kateri obe sta naši članici.
Tudi Bertha Kennick je izgubila po dolgi bolezni očeta Albert Mutter Kennick. Bil je slep zadnja štiri leta in nato zadnje leto je imel še neozdravljivo bolezen, raka. Toda vse je zelo dobrovoljno prenašal. Ob smrti je bil
star 86 let. Zapušča poleg hčerke Berthe tudi vnukinjo Joanne.
Naše iskreno sožalje vsem prizadetim in žalujočim družinam; pokojnim pa večno plačilo v nebesih.
Ko pišem te vrstice, nas je za vedno zapustila sestra Anna Bučar, iz 606 N. Broadway, v starosti 86 let. Pokojna Bučar je bila rojena 4. julija 1871 v vasi Police, p. Grosuplje, Slovenija, umrla 8. junija 1958, pristopila v Zvezo 18. novembra 1928, predlagana po sestri Mary Rus. Torej je bila članica skoraj od začetka. Ako bi živela še en mesec, bi 10. julija praznovala 65-letnico zakona. Njen soprog Matevž, ki je sedaj star 96 let, je še vedno pri zdravju. Zapušča štiri hčerke, in sicer Mrs. Fred Braddock, ki stanuje v Clevelandu, nato Miss Anna, ki je tudi v Clevelandu, Stefie in Josephine, iz Jolieta, ter pet sinov: Thomas, Alexander, William, Benny in Robert, ki je pravnuk, tukaj v Jolietu. Nadalje sedem vnukov in osem pravnukov. Prej sta umrla še dva otroka v mladih letih.
Josephine, hčerka, je naša članica mnogo let in je bila prav dobra keglja-čica veliko let. Pogreb se je vršil dne
11.	junija. Naše članice so kot vedno molile ob krsti pokojne in jo spremile na zadnji poti.
Na tem mestu v imenu vseh članic izrekam prizadeti družini in sorodnikom naše globoko sožalje. Pokojni naj sveti večna luč in na svidenje v nebesih.
Dne 14. junija sta se odpeljali z letalom v staro domovino dve naši članici, in sicer Mrs. Louise Nasen-beni in Ursula Ambrose. Gredo s skupino patra O. Hajnšeka, kateri jih bo vodil k Fatimi, v Lurd in Rim ter na' Višarje, kjer bodo nato prestopile jugoslovansko mejo. Med tem časom bodo tudi obiskale svoje sorodnike, katerih niso videle, odkar so se prvič podale v Ameriko. Svidenje bo gotovo prav prisrčno.
Ko se je vaša poročevalka mudila v stari domovini pred dvemi leti, je obiskala sestro Mrs. Ambrose, katera je iskreno želela še enkrat videti svojo sestro. Sedaj se ji bo želja končno izpolnila.
Želimo vsem našim članicam srečno, zdravo in zabavno potovanje ter veselo svidenje ob povratku.
Ker ne bomo imele tri mesece seje letos, bo naša prva seja v mesecu septembru. Med tem časom upam, da boste vseeno imele vaš asesment plačan, ker to je zelo važno za sleherno članico.
Vsem bolnim članicam v tem mesecu želim skorajšnjega okrevanja, Vam zdravim pa mnogo razvedrila.

—	Prav veselo je bilo na zadnji seji in prav pridno smo poslušale, kaj so nam naše delegatke povedale o konvenciji. Naša tajnica Stella DanculI in
podpredsednica Mary Hosta pravite, da sta bili prav zadovoljni in bo o poteku konvencije vse v Zarji poro-čano.
Četrtič je postala stara mati naša dobra sestra Frances Cimperman, ko so pri njeni hčeri Dolores dobili hčerko in isto tudi pri sinu Ralphu. Čestitke Mrs. Frances Cimperman in mladima mamicama. Vsem skupaj pa želim ljubega zdravja in božjega blagoslova.
V	bolnišnici se nahaja sestra Ana Avguštin. Članice ste naprošene, da jo obiščete. Še vedno so bolne: Ivana Zalar, Mary Rahne in Mrs. Mencin. Vsem tem želimo ljubega zdravja in da bi kmalu zopet prišle na seje. Priporočam jih v molitev. Marija, zdravje bolnikov, prosi za nje.
Pozdravljam vse in vas prosim, da pridete na drugo sejo in pripeljete kaj novih članic, ki bodo z veseljem sprejete. Ukrenile bomo tudi kaj dobrega za poletni čas. Ostanite zdrave!

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Naša seja je bila še dokaj dobro obiskana in sklenjeno je bilo, da se najame bus za Zvezin dan v Lemontu, 20. julija. Vse tiste, katere ste namenjene potovati z busom, prosim, da ne čakate na zadnji dan, ker moramo vedeti vsaj en teden poprej. Toraj, pokličite mene ali pa Mary Krogulski, ker so članice sklenile, da sedaj v poletnem času ne bomo imele sej, to je julija, avgusta in septembra. Na zadnji seji sem poročala od naše konvencije. Tiste, ki se niste udeležile seje, prosim, da pre-čitate zapisnik konvencije v Zarji.
Na zadnji seji so servirale: Mary Uranič (dobre krofe), Mary Radi (dobro kapljico), Dorothy Mertič in Geli Gene (zelo dober kejk). Če je še katera kaj darovala, da tukaj ni omenjeno, prosim, da mi oprosti. Hvala vsem in se priporočam še zanaprej.
Zopet moram poročati žalostno vest, da je po mučni bolezni umrla naša članica Rozi Urbanč. Bila je par let predsednica naše podružnice in je bila zelo aktivna ter rada pomagala vse* povsod, dokler ji je zdravje dopuščalo. Njen veličasten sprevod je pokazal, da je bila zelo priljubljena. Ona ni nikdar zamudila, da ne bi prišla molit sv. rožni venec za umrlo članico in se udeležila pogrebnega sprevoda. Zato je bil tudi njen pogreb veličasten. Lepa hvala vsem članicam, ki so prišle v tako lepem številu molit in k sprevodu. Pokojna Rozi zapušča žalujočega soproga Andra, štiri hčere, ki so vse naše članice in sina ter 11 vnučkov; nadalje brata v Clevelandu in več sorodnikov in prijateljev. Naj ji bo Bog dober plačnik; sorodnikom naše sožalje.
Bivši predsednici Ana Plantan je umil soprog Joe Plantan. Preminul je nepričakovano. Pokojni zapušča žalujočo soprogo Ano, hčer ter šest sinov. Naj v miru počiva; družini in sorodnikom naše sožalje.
Gospa štorklja se je oglasila pri naši članici Mr. in Mrs. William Okiff in jima pustila zalo hčerko. Dekliško ime matere je bilo Dorothy Urbanč. Materi in hčerki želimo zdravja.
Lepa hvala vsem podružnicam in članicam v Milwaukee in West Allis za dobro postrežbo ob času konvencije in ogled mesta.

Št. 25, Cleveland, Ohio. — Enajsta redna Zvezina konvencija je za nami
—	zapustila nam je lepe spomine. Iz Clevelanda se nas je odpeljalo lepo število delegatk in vožnja je bila prijetna in kratkočasna. Ko smo dospele v Milwaukee ob 6. zvečer, smo se kar peš podale do hotela Wisconsin, kjer so bile za nas že pripravljene sobe. Odpočile smo se, potem pa šle k večerji, ki se nam je dobro prilegla.
V	nedeljo smo se odpeljale z busom do cerkve sv. Janeza Evangelista, ki je bila v počast Zvezini konvenciji lepo okrašena. Sv. mašo je daroval naš novi duhovni svetovalec Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M. Imel je tudi pridigo o štirih letnih časih, katere je primerjal z zgodovino naše organizacije. Med sv. mašo je lepo prepeval domač cerkveni zbor, pod vodstvom organista Mr. Ernesta Majheniča.
Popoldne se je vršil v cerkveni dvorani slavnostni banket ob veliki udeležbi občinstva in odličnih oseb iz javnega življenja, med katerimi je bil tudi mihvauški župan Mr. Zeidler. Program je bil skrbno pripravljen ter je obsegal: pevske točke, veseloigro v treh dejanjih „Trije vaški svetniki”, nastop plesalcev v narodnih nošah, nastop harmonikašev, umetne plese in kot zadnja točka je bil ginljiv prizor „V spomin umrlim”. Stoloravna-telj banketa je bil mestni svetnik Mr. Matija Schimenz, sin dolgoletne tajnice podr. št. 12, Mrs. Mary Schimenz, ki je lepo predstavil popoldanski program. Po banketu se je. vršila v spodnji dvorani prosta zabava s plesom. Hvala vsem podružnicam in posameznim osebam, ki so pripomogle k lepo uspelemu banketu.
Naslednjega dne, v ponedeljek, se je pričelo konvenčno zasedanje in delegatke so druga drugo veselo pozdravljale. Istega dne popoldne se je vršil izlet na Holy Hill, poznano božjo pot v Wisconsinu, kjer je v veličastni cerkvi imel naš duhovni svetovalec Rev. Claude Okorn slovenske pete litanije.
Nazajgrede smo se ustavile v West Allisu, kjer nam je župnik Rev. Set-ničar razkazal šolo in novo dvorano, v kateri so nam članice iz West Allisa pripravile večerjo in kratek program.

V	torek in v sredo se je nadaljevalo konvenčno zborovanje. Podana so bila poročila glavnih odbornic, med temi Mrs. Marie Prisland, tajnice finančnega odbora, o Zvezinem premoženju in investicijah, ter poročilo glavne tajnice o stanju smrtninskih skladov. Ker je umrljivost članic čedalje večja in znaša povprečna starost istih nad
50	let, zato se je na zahtevo Državnega zavarovalninskega urada moral povišati mesečni asesment za pet centov. To povišanje bo stopilo v veljavo s 1. januarjem 195.9. Omenim tudi, da so plače gl. odbornic ostale iste, kot so bile poprej in tudi poslovni stroški ostanejo po starem. Zato prosim članice, da imajo toliko razumevanja in vzamejo to določbo na znanje. Zveza je naša organizacija, in naša dolžnost je, da jo obdržimo na zdravi finančni podlagi.
Na junijski seji smo praznovale rojstni dan naših sester: Mrs. Stam-pfel, Mrs. Virant in Mrs. Mahne. Prva nam je prinesla sendviče in čaj, druga krofe in slednja maslene stru-kelce. Hvala vsem trem za dobrote!
Vse, ki dolgujete asesment, prosim, da pridete na našo sejo ali pa na 25. v mesecu poravnate svoj dolg.
Naše seje se vršijo redno vsak drugi ponedeljek v mesecu in po seji je zabava. Na svidenje!

Št. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — Majniška seja je bila prav povoljno obiskana. Pogrešana je bila naša predsednica, ki je bila na konvenciji. Hvala vsem, ki ste se potrudile, da smo imele tako veliko udeležbo. Po seji smo imele prosto zabavo v počast našim mamicam, in rojstnih dni. Naše dobre članice so prinesle obilo dobrot in zahvala gre Mrs. Johanna Cesnik, ki je prinesla velik „apple strudel” (bil je še gorak). Mrs. Veselic je prinesla rozinov strudel, Mrs. Maureen pa velik kejk. Mrs. Coghe nas je razveselila z veliko košaro krofov. Prisrčna hvala vsem. Dobro smo se imele ter v prijateljstvu skupaj malo pokramljale in zapele nekaj veselih pesmic ter se vesele razšle domov.
Posebna zahvala z moje strani za poslane karte in voščila ter darila za moj rojstni dan: Mrs. Jergel, Mrs. Klun, Mrs. Oblak, Mrs. Trontel, Grandmother’s Club pri Mrs. Klobuchar. Hvala za tako lep party. Na 25. maja nas je ona postregla s šampanjcem, katerega sem drugič pila v življenju. Veni, da ne bom mogla vam vsem povrniti, kar ste dobrega storile zame. Naj Vam Bog stotero poplača. Skušam se po svoji skromnosti zahvaliti vsem, katere ste pripomogle k lepemu uspehu naše prireditve dne 8. maja.

Št. 28, Calumet, Mich. — Ko pišem ta dopis, slišim v radiu, da je šla cena bakru navzgor, kar je vesela novica za nas vse, ker tukaj ni drugega zaslužka, kot v bakrenih rudnikih. Bila sem v trgovini in znanka me ogovori: „Hello!” — Pogledam in rečem: „Ne zameri, nikogar ne vidim, ko gledam te visoke cene!”
Vreme nam letos precej nagaja in je mrzlo. Kar smo posadili, se boji priti ven iz zemlje1. Mi Slovenci se ne bojimo trdega dela. Sosed je bil čez 10 let odtod, pa je prišel nazaj, prekopal svoj vrt, pobral travo, posejal — in letina je bila dobra! Želim, da se mu izplača njegov trud. Soseda druge narodnosti je posadila čebulo in ko je čebula začela rasti, vidim, da nekaj pobira. Rečem ji, da je dosti plevela. Ona pa mi odvrne: „Ne pobiram trave, ampak čebulo, ker čebule je manj.” — Kdor zna, pa zna.
Naša društva izumirajo. Mi starejši smo imeli društva za bolniško in smrtninsko podporo, da ko je prišla nesreča, smo lahko plačali zdravnike in pogreb. Današnja mladina pa, če pride sila, jih država živi in zalaga ali vzdržuje.

Št. 32, Euclid, Ohio. — Naša junijska seja je bila zanimiva, ker nam je predsednica poročala od konvencije.
Od naših članic je več otrok, ki so graduirali. Naše čestitke vsem ter jim želimo srečo v bodočnosti.
Jennie Gustinčič je postala v maju šestič stara mati, ko so dobili pri hčeri Irene punčko, da bo za družbo bratcu. Naše čestitke!
Dne 24. maja smo izgubile sosestro Ana Gole. Dan poprej je bila na sinovi svatbi in ponoči jo je pa Bog poklical k Sebi. Zapušča moža, dva sinova in tri hčere, ki so vse naše članice. Hčerka Hedviga Kraus, ki je bila tudi naša tajnica, je umrla leta 1954. Naj blaga sestra Gole v miru počiva. Preostalim naše sožalje.
V	juliju ne bo seje, zato ste na-prošene, da pogledate v knjižice, če imate poravnan asesment. Če še ni, ga poravnajte kakor hitro mogoče, ker tajnica ne bo zakladala za več kot dva meseca.
Želimo vam lepo poletje in tistim, ki boste potovale, srečen povratek.

Št. 40, Lorain, Ohio. — Zopet je prišel čas, da se malo oglasim v naši priljubljeni Zarji. Na naši seji meseca maja smo sklenile, da ako se zadostno število članic priglasi za poln bus, bomo šle na božjo pot v Corey, Ohio, na 15. avgusta. Zbrale se bomo pri naši cerkvi ob 8:45 uri zjutraj. Točno ob deveti uri se bomo odpeljale na božjo pot.

Na 11. maja je Rev. Fr. Sebastian Soklich obhajal 15-letnico duhovniškega stanu. Rev. Fr. Soklich je sin Mr. in Mrs. Frank Soklich, 1729 E. 32nd St., Lorain, Ohio. Ima tudi dve sestri, Mrs. Jean Yelenc in Mrs. Mary Sesek. — Sprejmite čestitke od članic podr. št. 40, Lorain, Ohio.
Njegova mati Mrs. Johanna Soklich je dobra članica naše podružnice.
Konvencija je za nami. Najprvo se zahvalim Rev. Claude Okornu za lepe besede, ki jih je povedal pri sv. maši, na banketu in na konvenciji. Hvala pevcem za tako lepo petje pri sv. maši in na banketu ter igralcem za tako fino igro, potem pa še vsem trem domačim podružnicam, ki so nas tako lepo sprejele in dobro postregle.

—	Udeležba na junijski seji je bila prav zadovoljiva. Za čas odsotnosti naše zapisnikarice Ančke, je ta posel prevzela sestra Anna Koželj, za kar smo ji prav hvaležne.
Tajnica, ki je zastopala našo podružnico na ravnokar minuli konvenciji, je podala vse važne sklepe iste, katere so navzoče članice dobro vol ino sprejele, želeč, da bodo vsi zaključki konvencije v lep napredek organizacije.
Po končani konvenciji se je bilo kar težko posloviti od lepega mesta Milwaukee in okolice, od prijaznih dele-gatinj in tamkajšnjih postrežljivih članic. Vsem skupaj za vse prisrčna hvala, prav posebno pa Mrs. Frances Plesko in Mrs. Rose Kraemer, ki sta vse tako izvrstno uredili. Bog živi vse vrle članice podružnic št. 12, 17 in 43.
Sedaj, ko je v teku Pokonvenčna kampanja, se kar takoj ob začetku potrudimo za nove članice. Sklenjeno je, da bomo tudi to poletje imele izlet, in sicer na lepi prostor sestre Anne Koželj. Vse, katere se zanimate za en dan lepega razvedrila, pridite na prihodnjo sejo, da bomo določile dan izleta.
Po seji smo pa zopet imele celo gostijo, ko smo praznovale rojstne dneve naše predsednice Francke Meše in nadzornice Nellie Pintar. Gostiteljice so bile sestre: Meše, Pintar, Markel, Starin in Strumble. Še na mnoga leta, Francka in Nellie!
Lepa hvala naši častni mamici M. Plešec za lep dar v blagajno, kakor tudi sestram: F. Rijavec, M. Jalovec in A. Skok za pomoč naši blagajni. Vsem članicam, katere ste že odšle ali boste še šle na oddih tekom poletja, želimo lepega razvedrila. Naši glavni tajnici Mrs. A. Št. 47, Garfield Hgts., Ohio. — Naznanjam članicam naše podružnice, da ne bomo imele seje meseca julija, pač pa bo prihodnja seja v nedeljo, 27. septembra ob 2. uri popoldne v navadnih prostorih, 8601 Vineyard Avenue.
Na 11. junija je praznovala svoj 75-letni rojstni dan sosestra Margareta Mulh. Kljub visoki starosti je še vedno vesela in dobre volje med družbo. Želimo Vam še mnogo rojstnih dni in Bog blagoslovi Vaša dobra dela.
Izrekamo iskreno sožalje sestri J. Kmet, kateri je pred par meseci umrl soprog. Težko je, ko pride žalost v hišo. Zato bodite potolaženi. Božji volji se bomo morali vsi ukloniti. Naj pokojni počiva v miru božjem.
Meseca maja je postala sestra Ivanka Bizjak zopet za enkrat več stara mama. Naše čestitke!
Na 25. maja smo imele redno sejo in praznovale Materinski dan. Imele smo se dobro. Sosestre, ki so prinesle okrepčila, so bile:	Terezija	Bizjak,

Letos vsaka članica v odraslem oddelku prispeva $1.50. Tiste, ki pošiljate svoj asesment po pošti, prosim, da priložite polno vsoto. Nekatere ste že poslale in bi želela, da ob prvi priliki poravnate še ostalih 50^. Priporočam, da vsaka prečita konvenčni zapisnik v Zarji, da bo vedela, kakšni so sklepi za prihodnja tri leta.
Hvala podružnicam v Milwaukee in West Allis, ki so nam tako lepo postregle in nas zabavale z lepimi programi. V nedeljo so pri sv. maši v cerkvi sv. Janeza Evangelista pevci na koru lepo prepevali Marijine pesmi.
Ker bi se dopis preveč zavlekel, če bi vse opisala, zato še enkrat vsem za vse, kar ste storili, prisrčna hvala. Isto tudi za prijaznost, ki smo jo bile delegatke deležne na 11. konvenciji v Milwaukee, Wis.

zimi smo vendar dočakali čas, ko gredo ljudje na počitnice. Dosti jih je tako srečnih, da potujejo v domovino, Lurd in Rim. Želim vsem srečno potovanje in vrnitev domov, kjer je še vedno najbolje.
Kot druga leta, tako tudi letos ne bo seje v mesecu juliju. Prihodnja seja bo 21. avgusta.
Na majski seji smo imele večerjo ,,Cover Disli” z vsakovrstnimi dobrotami. Bilo nas je lepo število mater in hčerk in imele smo mal program. Hvala vsem, ki ste pomagale. Zahvala
gre članicama mladinskega oddelka Karen Tomazin in Sharon Simkens, ki sta tako pridni punčki, da pokažete, kaj znate.
V aprilu so nas pogostile sestre: Josephine Gliha, Anna Volk, Isabella Rek, in Regina Gliha za mesec maj. Happy birthday to all!
Ne pozabite, da bomo imele oktobra maškeradno veselico. Na zadnji seji je bila sklenjeno, da bi tista, ki bo prodala deset vstopnic, dobila eno zastonj. Proda jih lahko članicam, samo da so prodane.
Udeležila sem se 11. redne konvencije, kjer smo se sestale stare znanke. Bilo je pa dosti novih v hotelu Wisconsin. Kaj je bilo sklenjeno, bom poročala na seji meseca junija. Priporočam pa vsem, da preberete poročilo in zapisnik konvencije v Zarji.
V čast si moramo šteti, da smo imele med nami ves čas konvencije našega novega duhovnega svetovalca Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M., župnika cerkve sv. Janeza Evangelista., slovenske fare v Milwaukee. Iskrena hvala podružnicam št. 12, 17 in 43 iz Milwaukee in West Allis za izvrstno urejen program ob času konvencije in dobro postrežbo, kakor vsem pevcem in pevkam ter igralcem in igralkam in vsem, ki so sodelovali, da je bilo vse tako dobro izvršeno. „Račke na vodi” tudi ne bomo tako kmalu pozabile. Tudi romanje na Holy Hill je bilo nekaj posebnega, posebno pa slovenske pete litanije, ki so za nas bile nekaj posebnega, v srce segajočega, česar ni več po naših naselbinah. Nehote te oblijejo solze — spomniš se domovine in mladosti. Prisrčna hvala vsem, kakor tudi g. župniku od St. Mary, ki nam je razkazal krasno dvorano in šolo ter cerkev. Vem, da so delegatke odnesle od vsega najlepše vtise in spomine. Zahvala tudi članicam podr. št. 50 iz Clevelanda, ki so nas zabavale. Nepozaben je bil tudi „Spomin mrtvim”, ki ga je pripravila urednica Corinne Leskovar. Zahvalim se tudi moji družbi za kratek čas med potovanjem, to so bile Mary Snezic (Polka Dot), Theresa Lozier, M. Rob-sel in M. Maček.
Čestitam vsem dosedanjim in novoizvoljenim glavnim odbornicam z željo, da bi še zanaprej delovale za pro-ovit SŽZ v Ameriki.

Št. 55, Girard, Ohio. — Zbrale smo se pred Slov. domom dne 14. maja ob pol 5. uri popoldne in potem smo se odpeljale proti Youngstownu na „Mother-Daughter Banquet”, ki je bil to leto v Simorgasbordu. Seveda, kakor vsako leto, je bil tudi to leto naš gost župan iz Girarda. On je vodil na čelu našo karavano, katera je bila precej dolga. Štela je 50 članic, z našim županom vred 51.
Imeli smo se zelo dobro in nekaj novega je bilo za nas vse serviranje. Miza, na kateri so bile razložene razne
delikatese, je bila skoraj ,,miljo” dolga in povedano nam je bilo, da si moremo od vsakega nekaj vzeti na svoj krožnik. Lahko si sami mislite, kolikokrat smo morale iti mimo te mize, da smo vse to stlačile na naše krožnike. Če verjamete, ali pa ne — bilo je vse prav dobro in zelo okusno. Mislim, da to pot ne bo nobene kritike.
Glede moje osebe, moram reči, da sem bila ta večer tudi zelo presenečena: Prvič, ker so mi dali prostor zraven našega župana in naše predsednice — to je že velika čast! — in drugič, ker so me izvolile za častno mater tega leta in me obdarile z lepimi darili, članice kakor tudi naša predsednica. Zakaj vse to, ne vem? Eno pa vem, da ta večer nisem mogla spraviti na dan niti najmanjše besedice, da bi se dostojno lepo zahvalila za vse to presenečenje. Drage članice, upam, da se nisem nobeni zamerila, ker nisem našla pravih besed za zahvalo. Zato se vam sedaj tembolj iz srca prav vsem zahvaljujem za izkazano mi čast in darila.
Povedano mi je bilo, da so pri Mr. in Mrs. Frank Leskovec zopet dobili krepkega fantka; tako imajo sedaj že dva fantka in eno punčko.
Pri Mr. in Mrs. John Knez so tudi dobili novorojenčka, in sicer tudi prav čvrstega in velikega fantka, na katerega je atek zelo ponosen.
Obema družinama pošilja naša podružnica najlepše čestitke.
Nekaj se je govorilo, da bomo šle na božjo pot. In tudi, da bomo imele piknik to leto na Luzierovi farmi.

Št. 77, N.S. Pittsburgh, Pa. — Članice so se udeležile majniške prireditve v lepem številu. Skušam se po svoji skromnosti zahvaliti vsem, katere ste pripomogle k lepemu uspehu našega b-party. Hvala tudi članicam, ki niso mogle biti navzoče, pa so darovale lepe dobitke v ta namen. Vsem skupaj srčna hvala za pomoč.
Dne 24. julija bo zopet nekakšen praznik naše podružnice. Imele bomo piknik (izlet) na North Park, tako-zvani “Cherry Grove”. To bo na četrti četrtek v juliju. Pridite prav vse in pripeljite tudi otroke mladinskega oddelka. Kot je že navada, bo podružnica poskrbela za naše male, da dobi vsak majhno darilo. Vabljene ste prav vse. Obeta se nam dosti zabave in prostega jedila. Katere ste pa tako srečne, da imate še može žive, pripeljite jih s seboj. Za nje bo tudi preskrbljeno nekaj v steklenicah. Ne pozabite na 24. julij In pridite dovolj zgodaj. Ne vem, kaj bi še napisala, da bi bolj vleklo!

Št. 88, Johnstown, Pa. — Letos me je doletela čast, da sem zastopala kot delegatka podr. št. 88 na konvenciji. Vendar iz razloga, ker bodo vsi kon-venčni zaključki objavljeni v Zarji, ne bom o teh pisala, pač pa bom poročala
o	mojih vtisih, ki sem jih dobila tekom konvencije. Ker je bilo to prvič v mojem življenju, me je pričelo resno skrbeti, kaj bo, če se izgubim, ali če me kdo ukrade, da še domov ne bom mogla. Vse mi je šlo po glavi.
A vse skrbi so bile nepotrebne, vse je šlo po sreči. S sestrami: Kamnikar, Stušek in Tomkoski smo se domenile, da bomo potovale skupno in ko smo zjutraj ob G:13 zasedle svoje prostore v vlaku, me je sestra Kamnikar po-troštala: ,,Ej, nekam bomo že prišle, nič bat!” — In res, ob 6:30 zvečer smo že bile v Wisconsin hotelu. Pod varstvom tamkajšnjega odbora smo se čutile varne kot doma. Za vse je bilo že vnaprej preskrbljeno. Določen nam je bil čas zborovanja in čas za razvedrila. Odbor je mislil na vse.
Delegatke so prihajale z vseh strani Amerike in presenečena sem bila, odkod toliko slovensko govorečih ljudi. Povsod: v zbornici, v cerkvi in tudi na ulici, vsepovsod si čul slovenski jezik. Uganka mi je, zakaj eni tako jamrajo, da gremo h koncu.
Delo v zbornici je šlo hitro naprej. Poročila glavnih odbornic so bila razumljiva in vestno sestavljena, tako da so lahko ponosne na svoje delo in me jim lahko zaupamo.
Prvič v življenju sem imela priliko slišati slovensko zborno pesem. Name je to vplivalo tako, da se ne morem pravilno izraziti.
Ko mi je bilo štiri leta, me je mati privedla v to deželo, pouk v šoli je bil angleški, zato je naravno, da nimam dosti pojma o slovenskem petju. Tako, da ne vem, ali sem občudovala pesem ali pevce ali oboje. Name je naredilo mogočen vtis. Ne bi verjela, da je slovenska pesem tako lepa. Vsa čast gre mihvauški naselbini, ki nam je pripravila tako lep užitek.
Čas nam je minil vse prehitro, a vendar sem toliko doživela v teh dneh, da mi bo ostalo v spominu za vse življenje. Narod se ceni po njegovi kulturni vrednosti in ne po bogastvu, in mislim, da bo Ženska Zveza imela odlično mesto v zgodovini Ameriških Slovencev.
Sestre, bodimo ponosne na to, kar imamo. In skušajmo doprinesti svoj delež za napredek naše Ženske Zveze s tem, da pridobimo tudi kaj novih članic, in da se bolj redno udeležujemo društvenih sej.
Nesreča nikoli ne počiva — „Danes meni, jutri tebi...” Pred dvemi leti sem imela težko operacijo. Kako se mi je dobro zdelo, ko sem dobivala karte in obiske in še danes sem hvaležna vsem, ki so se me spomnile v tem žalostnem času — in to se lahko zgodi vsaki. Sestre, ne pozabite tega!

St. 88, Johnstown, Pa. — Zdaj nas je zapustila huda zima In zopet so topli dnevi, cvetlice cveto in vse je veselo po vrtovih.
Drage sestre, ako ste že kaj brale Zarjo, potem veste, da se je pričela s 1. julijem Pokonvenčna kampanja, ki bo trajala do 31. decembra 1958.
Naša zadnja prireditev „pokrita rih-ta”, katero smo imeli 14. maja, se je še precej obnesla za našo ročno blagajno.
Članice so pristopile na Materinski dan skupno k sv. obhajilu. Navadno je vsaki mesec na prvo nedeljo.

Št. 89, Ogl'ebsy, III. — Za Materinski dan smo imele banket v Dear Park Country Club-u, kjer smo praznovale 20-letnico naše podružnice. Bilo nas je skupaj čez 70 članic. Povabljene so bile tudi članice od podr. št. 24 iz La Salle, 111., in so tudi prišle v lepem številu. Celo članica Mary Prosen iz East Moline je bila z nami. Hvala vsem, ki ste se nam pridružile za to 20-letno proslavo.
Prvi odbor podružnice je bil sledeč: Mary Jazbec je bila ustanoviteljica in je leta 1938 prevzela tajniško delo; Frances Nemeth, predsednica; Mary Ambrose, podpredsednica; Louise Kernz, blagajničarka in Mary Cenkar, zapisnikarica. One so pridno delale od začetka, tako da je naša podružnica v 20 letih precej narasla. Predstavljene so bile ustanovne članice in dobile spominček za njih delo; ravno tako je bila gl. predsednica Josephine Livek obdarjena s šopkom rdečih cvetlic. Sin naše predsednice Mary Reith je jemal slike, da jih bomo videle na seji. Mize so bile okrašene z lepim cvetjem in po večerji nam je igrala poskočne nolke na svoj akordion Miss Sharon Hobneck.
Sestra Anna Perch je nahaja v St. Mary Hospital, La Salle; iz bolnice domov pa se je vrnila Anna Antko-wich. Vsem bolnim želimo hitrega ozdravljenja.

No. 95, So. Chicago, lil. — Naša mesečna sjednica je bila na 4. juna ali ni bila najbolje posečena. Zakaj sam gledala, bilo je malo članic, morebit 15-20, nekoje su bolne na „sore throat” nekoje na „cold”, i tako smo dobile više keksov nego je bilo članic. Imamo svaki put po sjednici kejk i coffee. Najviše smo pogrešale našu dragu Louise Dichele, koja je bila u hospi-talu na operaciji. Zato su blagajničarka Mildred Poropat i zapisnikarica Tillie Mortim prijele mesečni ases-ment od članic.
Drage sestre i članice, molimo za našu Louise, da nam što prije ozdravi i dojde zdrava na svoj rad za društvo.
Sve jo željno čekamo, jer je dobra i puno ustrežljiva za to delo, koje joj društvo dalo. Draga naša tajnica Louise Dichele, dragi Isus Ti podelil zdravlje i svako dobro, jer Ti zaslužiš, kad si toliko dobra za nas i za svoje delo, koje ti članice povjerile i puno i željom te očekujemo, da što prije ozdraviš.
Kad sam došla sa konvencije iz Milwaukee, onda sam obošla našu bo-lesnu sestru Miss Georgina Gospar i dala joj dar od konvencije $14.00. Kako je bila vesela i lepo se zahvalila i mi rekla, da se puno zahvali konvenciji i delegatkam.
Drage moje sestre, ja sam čula, da budu zanju tam) pod jesen delale njene prijateljice ,,Fashion Show”, da si sirota iz tog benefita pomore platit hospital. Pak vas molim, da se i mi odzovemo kad to bude, da joj pomog-nemo siroti u potrebi, jer je bolest največi trošak.
Sada Vas drage sestre prosim, da se odzovite za drugu sjednicu, koja bude na 2. julija, to jest na prvu srijedu. Pak ako koja misli da idemo u Le-mont na 20. julija, da se u vrijeme bus naruči, jer je težko dobit bus zadnje dane. Toliko, da znate, što se radi u društvu.
Sa najlepšim pozdravom i dobrim željama, da ste mi zdrave i vesele. Tako isto pozdravljam cijeli glavni odbor naše dične organizacije Slovenske Ženske Zveze i sve delegatke.

št. 100, Fontana, Calif. — Poročam, da smo imele 8. maja „Surprise Party” za našo častno mater Mrs. Mary May-zak. Vršil se je pri njenem sinu in snahi Jackie Mayzak. Smo se prav dobro zabavale in navzočih članic je bilo 26. Naša častna mati je zaslužila za njeno požrtvovalnost, da smo sei je spomnile.
Seje smo premestile na vsak tretji četrtek v mesecu, naslov je: 1GG28 Orange Way, Fontana.
Slovenske žene in dekleta, pristopite k naši organizaciji. Pridite med nas, z veseljem vas bomo sprejele. Mnogo lepih uric boste preživele med nami. Lahko rečemo, kako smo vesele, ko se ozremo na seji in vidimo tu pa tam sedeti mlado ženo ob strani svoje matere. Veselje se jim čita na obrazu ob tem svidenju in skupnem delu za organizacijo.

Poštnina za pisma se bo s 1. avgustom podražila
^LI kdaj premislite, kadar oddajate pismo na pošto, kako je ta postrežba poceni. Kdo bi hotel prevzeti odgovornost za dostavo pisma, ako bi zato dobil plačilo treh centov? Neslanega močnika bi si ne zaslužil s takim plačilom. A naša pošta že mnogo let opravlja za nas to službo, katera nam vsem omogoči, da smo v pismeni zvezi radi kupčije ali pa radi prijateljstva z našimi sorodniki in znanci po celem svetu. Za naše države je veljala pisemska poštnina le tri cente. Sklenili so, da bodo k tem trem centom primaknili še enega, kar bo še vedno zelo poceni. Naši predniki niso poznali današnje poštne postrežbe. Kdor je odpotoval v druge kraje, ni mogel obvestiti svojcev o sebi, dokler ni našel človeka, ki se je vračal v dotični kraj. Sporočila so prihajala na redke čase
in mnogokrat so bile pretrgane vse zveze z ljudmi, ki so se razšli. Poštni sistem pa nas zbližuje z vsemi ljudmi in kraji, kamor hočemo odposlati naš pismeni pomenek. Ali ni to v resnici velika ugodnost, kakršne naši predniki niso nikdar poznali. Poštni sistem v Ameriki je še jako mlad in ima tako pisano in razburljivo zgodovino za seboj, kakor so jo imeli iskalci zlata. Prva pošta je bila poslana v poštnih vozovih. Stare filmske slike nam pričajo, da je bilo to v zvezi z raznimi nevarnostmi. Dostikrat je bil tak voz napaden od roparjev, ki so se polastili zlata in denarja, ako so zvedeli za tako pošiljatev. Pa tudi zamudna je bila taka pošiljatev. V enem dnevu so s konji prevozili dosti milj in daljave se niso kar tako skrčile. Tako zvani Pony Express je bil malo hitrejši. Jezdec na konju je pregalopiral velike daljave in tako omogočil poštno zvezo med iskalci zlata, ki so bili jako aktivni okrog leta 1849 v Kaliforniji. Prvi Pony Express je odhajal iz mesta St. Joseph, Missouri, s 75 poniji. Namenjen je bil v Sacramento, Kalifornija, kamor je prinesel pošto, posebno za rudarje, oziroma iskalce zlate žile. Rekordna hitrost take ekspedicije je bila sedem dni in sedemnajst ur. Za razposlan govor predsednika Lincolna leta 1861 so plačali za vsake pol unče po pet dolarjev. Kasneje so to poštnino znižali na en dolar. Buffalo Bill Codi je bil med prvimi jezdeci Pony Express-a. Leta 1639 je angleški kralj ukazal, da se vsa pošta za kolonije odda v Bostonu v gostilni (Tavern) Richarda Fairbanks. Ta je dobil za vsako oddano pismo en peni kot plačilo.
Poštna postrežba med New Yorkom in Bostonom je bila jako pospešena s cesto, ki se še danes imenuje Boston Post Road. Poštne ceste so pozneje napravili med državo Maine do Floride in iz New Yorka do Kanade. Prvi deželni poštar je bil Benjamin Franklin, ki je prejel en tisoč dolarjev letne plače za ta opravek. On je postavil poštni sistem na dobro podlago. Poštna znamka, kakršno poznamo danes, je v resnici čarobna sličica, ki prenaša naša pisma v najbolj oddaljene kraje in mesta. Bo leta 1847 ni še nikdo mislil, da bi plačeval poštno pristojbino s takim neznatnim koščkom papirčka. Poštni uradnik je zapisal ali natiskal s kakim pečatom, da je poštnina plačana. Vedeti moramo, da tedaj tudi niso poznali poštnih škrinjic, kakršne so nam na razpolago v gotovih presledkih po mestih in po deželi. Kdor je hotel, da gre pismo naprej, je moral nesti pismo na pošto in tam urediti glede plačila. Obenem je na pošti lahko povprašal, če je tam kakšno pismo zanj.
Leta 1863 so začeli z raznašanjem pošte. Za začetek je bilo najetih 440 pismonoš. Prihodnje leto je poštna uprava najela vlak, ki je peljal pošto in jo spotoma odlagal na gotovih krajih. Več kot pol stoletja je minilo,

predno so se začeli posluževati zračne pošte. Leta 1918 proti koncu prve svetovne vojne je služila zračna pošta med Washingtonom in New Yorkom. Dve leti kasneje je bila zračna pošta vpeljana na vse ostale države v Ameriki. Danes prihajajo pisma, poslana po zračni pošti iz Evrope pa do Kalifornije v desetih dneh. Če to ni hitrost, ne vem kaj naj rečem. Z navadno pošto pa traja okrog tri tedne. To je še vse dovolj hitro, ako pomislimo, kako so bili ljudje ločeni od svojcev, ki niso imeli še poštnega sistema na razpolago. Na pročelju glavnih poštnih poslopij so navadno vklesane besede grškega zgodovinarja iz petega stoletja pred Kr., Herodotus-a, ki pravi, da poštnih kurirjev ne ustavi nobena ovira, dokler ne izvršijo svojega posla. Ne sneg, ne dež, ne vročina in tema noči ne prepreči dela poštnih kurirjev.
Poštnina štirih centov bo res malenkostna, če pomislimo na daljave, kamor je pismo namenjeno. Upamo, da bo poštna uprava s tem poviškom; lahko še nadaljevala s točno poštno postrežbo za vse svoje bližnje in daljnje prebivalstvo.
Strok česna ima veliko zdravilno moč
D ° tega so sedaj prišli zdravniki, ki skušajo najti sredstvo zoper raka. Zdravilno vrednost česna je svet poznal že pred tri tisoč leti pred Kr. Danes, ko se po številnih laboratorijih poskuša z raznimi sredstvi in metodami zamoriti rakove celice, je prišel tudi česen do svoje veljave. Česnov sok so rabili na miših in sedaj trdijo, da so imeli uspeh s tem ustaviti rakove izrastke. Če je mišim pomagalo, zakaj ne bi vsaj nekoliko pomagalo tudi na ljudeh, ki trpijo za rakom? V česnovem soku so našli posebno snov, ki jo imenujejo allicin in more ugonobiti rakov virus ali kar je že tista zlobna snov, ki začne razjedati telo. Delavci, ki so gradili piramide v Egiptu pred več tisoč leti, so tudi jemali česen kot poseben dodatek hrane, ki naj bi jih varovala pred obolenjem. Za časa raznih epidemij se je česen izkazal kot uspešno sredstvo proti raznim, tudi kužnim boleznim. S česnom so zdravili obolelo drobovje, dihala in razne kožne izpuščaje. Medicina zaznamuje uspehe česna pri zdravljenju jetike. Desetletni deček je trpel za kostno jetiko v roki. Zdravniki so že hoteli poseči po radikalnem sredstvu — da bi roko enostavno odžagali. Pa se je priglasil zdravnik, ki se je trudil ozdraveti roko s česnovimi obkladki. Čudovito lep uspeh je dosegel v šestih tednih, ko so vse kosti ozdravele. To vemo, da ima česen zelo močan duh in mi, ki smo se kdaj gostili s klobasami in drugimi dobrotami, pri katerih pride česen v poštev, se torej nič ne čudimo, ako je ta duh tako zdravilen in čudodelen.

No. 16, So. Chicago, III.—This month we would like to introduce you to our Junior member, Alan Winters. Alan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Winters. His mother is the former Edna Triller who was very active in the Branch No. 16 Cadets several years ago and she also bowled in many of the S.W.U. Tournaments. He comes from a family of loyal supporters of the Slovenian Women’s Union. His grandmother, Mrs. Katie Triller is a charter member of Branch No. 16, his great aunt, Katie Triller is a member of the Supreme Board and all of his aunts and cousins are members of our branch. We have named Alan the mascot of our branch because he attends every meeting with his mother. His daddy is an engineer on one of the steamships that sail the Great Lakes. His parents are very proud of him, and we are happy to have him as our member. Gladys K. Buck

Independence Day
Our Nation's birthday is at hand again, July 4. You’ll probably have a special family outing or day of fun planned. Just take a few minutes out to recall the true meaning of the day when the United States of America was born with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Medical Problems
A coroner tells of a death certificate which reached him. In the column reserved for “cause of death,” the doctor had signed his own name.
The coroner returned the certificate with a note:
“This may be true, but don’t you think we had better have some scientific reason as well?’’
Desperate Remedy
Dan Bennett, in the American Legion Monthly, tells the story of an elderly native of a rural section who throughout his life had never gone to church and never taken any interest in religious matters. In due course he was confined to his bed with a serious illness. The doctor came, looked him over, and informed the old gentleman that he was a mighty sick man. After a moment of reflection, the old native said:
'Tell me, doc, what do you think of this here death-bed repentance.”
