Notranja pot preobrazbe
Oznanjevanje evangelija in spreobrnjenja zdaleč nista samo pridiganje ali raznašanje nekih idej. Kristus ni bil ideja, zato tudi učenci ne morejo biti samo teorija. Zato, pravi sv. Marko, jim je dal »oblast«. Seveda ne oblast zasužnjevanja in manipuliranja, marveč moč osvobajanja, zdravljenja, očiščevanja in opogumljanja. Vsakomur je prinesena božja moč ponujena, da jo svobodno sprejme ali ne. »Če vas kak kraj ne sprejme ..., pojdite od tam ...« Moč ozdravljanja in izganjanja nečistih duhov je znamenje, da je božje kraljestvo že navzoče; da je odrešenje po Kristusu in njegovi krvi dejavno. Poslanstvo apostolov je prenašati v svet odrešenje, ki se je po Kristusovem delu že uresničilo. Ni le teorija, marveč proces.
»Zakaj v tem imamo odrešenje po njegovi krvi ..., da se v Kristusu podredi eni glavi vse, kar je v nebesih in kar je na zemlji.«
Jezusovi učenci, apostoli, naj delujejo tako, kot je deloval Kristus. Nič narejeno, nič preračunano. Preprosto. Iz resnice svojega bitja. V moči duha blagrov. V popolnem uboštvu človeških sredstev. Samo v Božji moči.
Ironija je, da smo kristjani v teku zgodovine vedno znova padali v skušnjavo pozunanjene moči in vplivanja na ljudi s pomočjo politike, vojske, ekonomije ... Zato je v časih največjega institucionalnega bogastva Cerkve prišlo do največjih razkolov.
Morda se je to zgodilo zato, ker je lažje na ljudi vplivati od zunaj, s sredstvi moči, kot pa stopiti z njimi na notranjo pot preobrazbe, kakršno zahteva Jezusova pot ljubezni.
A na to pot smo poklicani.
Razmislek ob Božji besedi 16. nedelje med letom
»Pojdite in se nekoliko odpočijte«
S temi besedami je Jezus sprejel učence, potem ko so se vrnili z apostolskih potov. Čeprav je množica prihajajočih in odhajajočih še vedno pritiskala nanje. »In odpeljali so se v čolnu v samoten kraj sami zase.« Ta kratki Markov opis nam pokaže Jezusa v drugačni luči, kot bi si ga mi morda predstavljali v duhu človeške gorečnosti: namreč Jezusa nenehno zavzetega v lajšanju bede, izganjanju hudih duhov, ozdravljanju, obiskovanju, pridiganju in aktivnem službovanju. Daleč od vsake nervoze in napetosti pa si Jezus v resnici privošči odmik v samoto, mir in kramljanje v zavetju skupnosti učencev. Bivanje z učenci na samotnem kraju mu ne pomeni izgube časa, marveč privilegiran čas srečanja s seboj in z Očetom. Skratka: Kristus ni bil gonjač, ampak pastir v pravem smislu besede.
Poučna se nam zdi izkušnja nekega raziskovalca težko dostopnih krajev v Afriki. Za daljšo raziskovalno odpravo je potreboval večje število nosačev. Lahko jih je dobil, saj jim je ponudil dobro plačilo. Vendar pa je od njih tudi mnogo zahteval. Čim prej je hotel doseči cilj. Najprej je vse šlo dobro. Čez teden dni pa so se mu nosači uprli. Obstali so. Po vztrajnem prigovarjanju, zakaj nočejo naprej, so mu odgovorili: »Ne moremo, ker smo izgubili duše. Počakati jih moramo, da nas dohitijo.«
Preprosti ljudje so še čutili potrebo po duši. Nam pa se zdi vprašanje duhovne kvalitete skorajda luksuzno vprašanje, saj smo vrženi v boj za golo preživetje. Nujne obveznosti in neodložljiva dela nas oblegajo, tako da smo se že sprijaznili živeti v svetu gonje in neusmiljenih gonjačev.
Nočemo izgubljati časa; nočemo zamuditi 'šans', nočemo zaostati .. . In tako se zapletamo v mehanizme prisile, nesvobode in nesmisla. Postajamo neprijetni sami sebi in drugim.
»Kaj namreč koristi človeku, če si ves svet pridobi, svoje življe-nje (svojo dušo) pa pogubi« (Mt 16,26). Pesnik H. Hesse pravi, da je ta starodavni človeški rek eden od tistih, ki so brezčasni in večno novi. Saj končno, kar je odločilno in odrešujoče, ni v naši dejavnosti, marveč v duši; v tem, kar dejavnost pomeni.
Kraj odkrivanja pomena pa je samota.
V pristni in globoki zbranosti odkrivamo korenine, iz katerih rastemo, živimo in snujemo. V njej določamo pravo razmerje do sebe in sveta, ki nas obdaja.
Čudno, da se te globine tolikokrat izogibljemo ali celo bojimo.

Moving on to a new school at the beginning of a new school year is a time of excitement and opportunity but also a time when many students experience fears about change. It is also usually a time of new school uniforms or a new set of clothes. Often the new jackets are too large and ill-fitting to allow for growth. The arms hang down over the hands. The clothes are unusually clean and pressed. Shoes look pristine and lack the battered scuffing that comes with age. The new school uniform is unfamiliar and students may feel uncomfortable in it. It takes time to grow into it and make it one's own.
Changes are opportunities but also often difficult life transitions. We also find times of new clothes and change in the Christian life. The sacrament of baptism is a time of new clothes and fundamental change. The new life of the Christian is symbolised by the white shawl in which the person is clothed. Many of us were baptised as infants, and as we grow up as Christians we celebrate the sacrament of confirmation when we make these clothes of Christ our own as adults. We are then called to carry out the definite service that God has given us and feel at home in it.
Gospel Teaching
Why would a shepherd be tending sycamore trees? It seems odd for Amos the shepherd to be pruning trees. Both jobs, being a shepherd and being a tender of sycamore trees, were often the work of very poor people who looked for odd jobs in order to gain some money on a day-to-day basis in order to provide food and living. The type of sycamore that Amos would have tended was not the sort of sycamore tree we may be familiar with in our own countries, but rather a prickly bush which produced small fruits. These fruits would normally be very bitter. However, if the dresser of the tree pierced each fruit, a little grub would get inside and make the bitter fruit sweet and edible. It was a prickly and painful job, which most people didn't want to do. Only those who were poor would do it in order to live. However, God had other plans for Amos.
The Lord called a very poor man to do his will and confront the king of Israel, Jeroboam, and his priest Amaziah. It would be Amos' task to reveal the kingdom's injustice and lack of faithfulness to God. Of course, like all God's prophets, Amos met opposition, but we remember him today as one of God's great prophets, even though he came from
a surprising background. He had the task of making a bitter kingdom sweet again with God's justice. Similarly Jesus called the Twelve from surprising and disparate workplaces, for example fishermen from their nets and Matthew the tax collector from his office, and gave them a new task: they were to call people to repentance and new life in Christ.
To be called to do God's work is a great honour as well as a responsibility. The dignity of the Christian is described in the letter to the Ephesians. The Father has forgiven our sins and poured the richness of God's grace and blessing upon us. We are stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit at baptism and confirmation so that we can be a new creation and members of the body of Christ, sharing in Christ's life and ministry in the world.
Application. One of the dismissals from the new translation of the Mass says, "Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life." This is what Amos and the apostles were called to do. We are sent out from the Mass renewed and refreshed to make the good news of Jesus' promise of love and mercy known to others. We are sent out to free people from the things that oppress them; and to help establish a kingdom built upon the values of justice, peace and love in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are sent out to bring healing and support to those who are sick and weary.
Like Amos and the apostles, we are sent out to help make places where there is bitterness or sadness into places of joy and love. We may wonder why God has chosen us to do this; but like Amos, and like the apostles, we may be surprised at what we can do in the power of God's Holy Spirit.

It had been a very hot day in the Spanish city of Madrid, with temperatures reaching forty degrees Celsius. A great crowd of young people, in their thousands, were gathered at an airfield, waiting for Pope Benedict XVI to arrive for a prayer vigil. When he did so, the heavens opened and a torrential rain fell upon the sweltering crowd. It was a welcome rain, if somewhat heavy, and the Pope praised the young people who had braved it. "Your faith is stronger than the rain," he told them. The occasion of this gathering was the World Youth Day in August 2011, and during that wet evening Pope Benedict gave wise teaching to the listening crowd.
Asked how we can live the faith in the conditions of the modern world, the Pope answered with the words of Jesus, "Remain in my love." He urged the young people never to settle for less than "love and truth" in their lives. Like a
true shepherd, the Pope went on to put courage into his young listeners. "Do not be afraid of the world," he told them, "and do not be afraid of the future, and do not be afraid of your own weakness."
In other addresses on this journey, Pope Benedict spoke to seminarians, to young women religious and to young university professors. He urged them all to be clear-minded, to allow their hearts to grow to maturity as they found their path in life, and so to live in a community of love and truth.
Gospel Teaching
The Gospel reading today reflects a similar experience of people gathering together, to listen to the words of a teacher. After a hectic time of missionary work, the disciples are exhausted, and Jesus says, "You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while." As they sail away, the crowds of people can guess where they are going, and on arrival Jesus and his friends find that the "lonely place" has become a crowded arena. So much for our "best-laid plans"!
Confronted by this demanding situation, Jesus sets himself to teach the people at some length. That is why they have come, why they are here before him. The work of teaching and healing is
the greatest work of all. We want to live our lives, and we want to be well. For this we need good teachers, people who will show us the way, people who will inspire us by their words and by their deeds. People who will put fresh heart into us, and who will be with us on the journey.
When Jesus stepped ashore, his first reaction was a feeling of pity for people who were bereft of such guidance. At the mercy of the great powers of this world, these ordinary people, often the victims of injustice and cruelty, were looking for a light to guide their way, a wisdom by which to live. Something told these people that they had found a treasure. They wanted more.
Application
During his visit to Spain, Pope Benedict had this to say to the listening seminarians: "We are not walking towards the abyss, the silence of nothingness or death... but we are pilgrims on our way to the Promised Land." A similar message of hope was given through the teaching of Jesus in Galilee, the words he spoke to the crowds, the message of life that he gave them.
In his teaching in Spain, the Pope also said, "We do not choose the places or the people to whom we are sent. Every time has its own challenges." Jesus found people waiting for him, some to listen to what he said, others to try to trip him in what he said, others still simply to twist whatever he said. But we, like Peter and the disciples, have found the Christ, the Son of the living God. And he has the words of eternal life.

We hope that our Slovenian youngsters will take this opportunity to enjoy the company of great friends and ready to make new friends share in laughter, cheering and a week filled with fun.
