Federacija SNPJ v vzhodnem Ohiu in društvo št. 21 SNPJ želi, naj nadzorni odaek navede i-mena vaeh članov ladnje konvencije, ki ao dobili "preveč dnevnic". Ker morda pride Še več takih zahtev ,zato pojasnjujemo da nadzorni odaek ni oblast nad konvencijo In nima pravice objavljati imen. Včasi ao svoje delo zelo površno opravljali toda sedaj, radi polomov bank In zavarovalnic, so morali postati bolj pridni. Vzrok so slabe razmere. Zadeva društva it. 313 Br. Markulin povzročitelj prepira, in to v opitem stanju. Pravila 8. člena pravil ni upravičen do bolniške podpore ta čas od 22. marca do 16. maja 1933 In s tem razveljavlja razsodbo društvene porote in obenem potrjuje postopanje gl. bolniškega tajnika. The severe depression was the main reason for this standstill in our organizational activities. Other factors which prevented our progress in that direction were of minor importance. The field for organizing new 8NPJ branches has somewhat become limited and only a few prospective communities remain unorganized and still present an opportunity for our expansion. There are still some localities left where new English Speaking branches of the SNPJ could prosper at least moderately if given the proper Incentive and necessary support by those in the immediate vicinities. • • e After all it is not so much the number of branches in an organization that really counts —It is the membership within the existing branches which can show, if it tries earnestly enough, the real fraternal progress and the right spirit for growth, and progress. Local branches can promote their various activities to such a degree that their endeavors will show the desirable results. The methods employed In branch work require intelligent approach on the part of all the members in the branch, but the bulk of the work by any branch must be borne by the branch officers and their most active and influential co-workers. In that manner the growth of a branch can be assured. • e • In every 81av community where the f^NPJ branches are doing their fraternal duty, there are still a number of young people who would qualify as members and who in time would become a credit to your branch and an asset to the entire organization. Our young people cannot afford to miss the opportunity now. They must all help to enlist the prospective members who still compose a vast army of our potential members. 0 0 0 There is nothing more gratifying to a member than the confidence gained that he Is doing his part for his local branch in promoting the scope of activities among his brother and sister members. It is true that occasional disappointments set in the path of any fraternal worker. That is to be expected and must be disregarded. Don't let things of this nature get the best of you. Remember that our pioneers were confronted with much greater obstacles and obstructions than you ever were. But they pushed ahead and worked for their organization with a real purpose persistently and determinate^. That's why they have succeeded in building this strong organization which today has a unique place in the history of the Slovene workers in the United States. It Is a credit to us all and a living monument to their conscientious work. . 0 0 • No local branch can expect to grow and expand In numbers and influence of its own accord, without the members' constant plugging for its progress. Remember that your local branch is what you make it. It can be of great importance in your community life only if you exert your fraternal abilities to the nth degreo, For your efforts you will be repaid In the end. Your fellow men will look upon you as an intelligent individual who is earnestly trying to better the conditions in his locality by helping to insure his friends and acquaintances in the largest and safest of our fraternal organizations. It is a known fayt that right now it is no easy job for anybody to smiro new members. Rut you can at least prepare the new prospects to join your fold when they will be in a position to become active members of the SNPJ. We are told daily that the tide in induatriea has turned and that general conditions are improving. To be sur<\ in some industrial centers there Is a slight improvement and a number of the unemployed have been called back to work. How far will this improvement go, no one can tell, but we do know that there are at least ten million unemployed workers in this country, conservatively speaking. All we can do Is to hope for the better. We do not expect the Impossible under the present system which rests on private gain, where human life doesn't count and private profit Is the chief god in our Industrial and economic life. • • • The present recovery plan, as we see tt, offers only a very mild reform of things that should be done by the government on the big scale for the benefit of all who work and produce. It should do away with the leaehea that suck the blood of thousand* and millions of worker» and their d«pend«nU. ftpriagfkld. IB.—The Lincolnitos held a dandy meetinf last Friday nlte, the best in a tone tin»« with au increased attendance. And they talked oar dance plenty. Bro. Frfjtk J. And to top the meeting. We kaew President Ed owned several lots out in "Cabbage Patch." But his surprise for us was watermelon—and plenty of it! • • • • The Sangamon County delegates to the Illinois Continental Congress, will caucus Sunday, Sept. t4, at S p. m. in the Slovene Home. An Action Committee end various sub-committees are slated to be elected. e e • • I understand Lodge 3M, Benld SNPJ, joined the Illinois Continental Congress. Let's hear from others. Brinecar. The Pioneers arc coming out of the slump and the depression slowly. At last Friday's meeting one new member was initiated and s}x transfer cards were presented. Four others were reinstated from the passive list.' Oar meetings sre begiaatag to take ea the aspect of the meetings of the good oM days when we always Initiated new members. In those days few Pioneer meetings passed without the acceptance of new members. • * • This is an appropriate time to go forth and bring in new timber, especially for our javeaile department. In the past year many juvenile members were ushered into the adult department. We must now replace them with new Juveniles. We should have at least Nf Javeaile members. And we taa get them if each of yoa do year Httle bit. • ♦ • Excellent reports were made for the Illinois Congress of Farmers snd Workers. In particular, the report of Alice Artach was timely and interesting. The detailed report of the picnic was made. It is an established fact that the Pioneers again held the largest picaic of the season among Slovenes la Chicago. Johnny Kopach Kve a brief report of the Wiener *st. You may have heard tha Monarchs before, but it ia not the same orchestra that you will hear at our dance, sa the orchestra now has a leader and eleven members, all very talented and ai% making a great name for themselves on the West Side. Among the new additions to the orcheatra ia A. Rob* aua, one of our own members, who made quite a name for himself when a member of the Harrison High band. Frank Gradishek, also an SNPJ member, plays with this orcheatra. So member« and friends, you are sa-sured of good music as this orchestra has been playing at the K. of C. Ballroom the past three months and are still playing there every Sunday evening. Last Wednesday they opened at Sokol Havlicek Tyrs and although it rained all day and evening they played to a capacity crowd. To assure yourself that they are able musicians, if it is convenient for you, visit one of the two ballrooms ant convince yourself. P. C. How WW Yos DoeMe? V K RO- TH P. HTKKRM DKPKAT NIANS So (tend. Baikal Slalas Under Spotlight (Special Correspondence) New York, Set it. 5«—Your correspondent learned today that, in one ef its next few issues, the New York liberal weekly, "New Republic," which probably Is America's foremost journal of opinion, will print a long article entitled "One Hundred Million Paasanta, or, What Nast in the Balkans and Eastern Europa.* The author of the article is the Yugoslav-American writer, Louis Adamk, whose books "DynamiteH and "Laughing in the Jungle" won him the award of a Guggenheim Fellowship, whkh enabled him to spend a year in Yugo-slavis. The article, which your correspond-•nt waa privileged to see ia proof. Is a comprehensive. althcAfch creatly Simplified, surrey of social, economic, and political conditiona in the Balkans and eastern Europe: that Is to say, Poland, Csechoeiovekia. Yugo-slavia, Rumania, Bulgaria. Hungary, and Aasftria—bst the author concern« bimaelf mostly with, and places hia emphasla on, the 81s* ic countrie«. The bulk of the article la about Yugo-•lavia. which the author consider-typical, hi one way or another, of the other count He« ia the region from the •attic southward to the Aegean and frem the Blotk See westward to the Adriatic. When y«mr correspondent chanced to meet the author in New York today, and coked him to make statement concerning the articla for the Slavic-American News, Mr. Adamic said: "Originally 1 wrote a 7,000-word artiele, in which I dealt with the situation, especially the Yugoslav department thereof, in greater detail than I do in the forthcoming MNcw Republic" article. Unfortunately, and to my deep regret, there waa no magazine willing to run 7,000 words on the Balkan situation, for American magasines hava problems of their own. I was compelled to condense my article, and I condensed it by simplifying the aitustion; by generalising, rather than working out the details point by point. Perhsp« I have oversimplified things. It was necessary to leave out the nationalist question altogether. I hops the Slavic readers of the article will bear this in mind." In the article, from which I am not allowed to quote at any length, Mr. Adsmic prophesies increasing dif-ficulties for the Balkan and eaat Eu-ropian states, and says that probably the only solution for their plight will be to break with the Western capitalist countries and beeome part of the Russian experiment in creating a new civilixation. He appears to believe that relentless socio-economic forces, European politics, and the paasionate Pan-Slavism of the Poles, Cxechs, Slovaks, Bulgers, Serbs, Croats and Slot, enes wilt inevitably operate to turn these peoples more and more to the Left; that ia, In the direction of Russia. If there Is no new European war, the proceea will take from fifteen to twenty year«. If the European powers, however, fall to prevent a new war. the Slavs outside of Russia will turn Rues la-ward much sooner. The article no doubt will interest all Slavs in the United States.
