A meščani so se ga izogibali zaradi prejšnjega nastopaštva in razgrajanja. Ne, če je bolečina in osamljenost edino, kar človek občuti! V mlajšem sinu so se prepletale telesne bolečine in sram, domotožje in ljubezen do očeta. Dokopal se je do globoke resnice in do spoznanja greha: šel je vase in ponovno priznal Boga. OČE, GREŠIL SEM ZOPER NEBESA IN PRED TEBOJ. Sodbo najdemo v vsej zgodbi. A prilika ostaja prilika. Pastoral Statement for the Catholics of Canada on the report issued by the Special Joint Committee of the Government of Canada, entitled Medical Assistance in Dying: A Patient-Centred Approach Dear brothers and sisters, The Special Joint Committee of the Government of Canada on “Physician-Assisted Dying” this past February 25 released its report, Medical Assistance in Dying: A Patient-Centred Approach. The report, in part, recommends: That assisted suicide be available to those with psychiatric conditions (Recommendation 3) That psychological suffering be among the criteria making an individual eligible for assisted suicide (Recommendation 4) That within approximately three years assisted suicide be available for adolescents and possibly also children who can be considered “mature minors” (Recommendation 6) That all health-care practitioners be obliged at the minimum to provide an “effective referral” for clients seeking assisted suicide (Recommendation 10) That all publicly funded health-care institutions in Canada provide assisted suicide (Recommendation 11) In addition, the report fails to show how palliative care and home care can provide true options for those tempted by suicide, nor does it call for a national plan to prevent suicides. Suicide rates are five to seven times higher for First Nations youth in Canada than for non- Aboriginal youth, while suicide rates among Inuit youth are among the highest in the world, at 11 times the national Canadian average. The teaching of the Catholic Church and the stance of the Catholic Bishops of Canada are clear. Suicide is not part of health care. Killing the mentally and physically ill, whether young or aged, is contrary to caring for and loving one’s brother and sister. The dignity of the human person and the flourishing of the human community demand: 1) protection and respect for each human life from conception to natural death, and 2) freedom of conscience and religion for each person as well as each institution. Social wellbeing, personal security and the common good – together with religious faith – involve safeguarding, not endangering, the lives of those suffer. The above recommendations and the thrust of the report completely fail to be “patient- centred” or to assist and support the dying and the vulnerable. To borrow from the words of Pope Francis, the report’s recommendations are the approach of a “throw-away” society. They do not reveal the face of God’s mercy. Together with my brother Bishops, both Catholic and Orthodox, as well as with leaders from the Evangelical Protestant, Jewish and Muslim faith communities, and many of other faiths or of no faith, I urge you to inform your elected officials why euthanasia, assisted suicide and the above recommendations are completely unacceptable. (Most Rev.) Douglas Crosby, OMI Bishop of Hamilton, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops - February 26, 2016 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT Response: Taste and see that the Lord is good. First Reading Joshua 5:9-12 After renewing their covenant with the Lord, the people set out to take possession of the promised land. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 It is God who reconciles us though the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Gospel Luke 15:1-3. 11-32 The prodigal son comes to his senses and remembers his father’s love. “Then he came to his senses.” Illustration Ravensbrück was the only major Nazi concen-tration camp specifically for women. Between 1939 and 1945, over a hundred and thirty thousand women and children passed through the camp. Up to fifty thousand are estimated to have died in the camp itself, perhaps even more. It is thought that more women died because of disease, starvation and overwork than in the gas chambers themselves. An unknown prisoner wrote what has come to be known as the Ravensbrück prayer, found scrawled on a piece of wrapping paper when the camp was liberated by Soviet troops. It runs: “Lord, remember not only the men and wom-en of goodwill, but all those of ill will. Do not only remember all the sufferings they have subjected us to. Instead, remember the fruits we brought forth thanks to this suffering – our comradeship, our loy-alty, our humility, our courage and generosity, the greatness of heart that all of this inspired. And when they come to judgement, let all those fruits we have borne be their forgiveness.” The Ravensbrück prayer asks God to remember all people – good and bad alike. It does not ask for vengeance but that God remember not just their sufferings but also their humanity, which survived through it all – in their friendship, loyalty and cour-age. The prayer bravely asks that this sacred remem-brance bear the fruit of forgiveness. Gospel Teaching Remembering is at the heart of today’s read-ings – the kind of remembering that is healing, life-giving. In the first reading, the people of Israel have kept alive the memory of home amidst the long years of slavery in Egypt. They have arrived at the borders of the promised land, ready to come home. The Lord has remembered his ancient promise to Abraham to grant his descendants this land, and the people, too, have remembered their covenant with God. Their dignity as God’s people is restored. We see the same dynamic at work in the Gos-pel story of the so-called prodigal son, though with a twist. The younger son is indeed prodigal – waste-ful and dissolute. He has forgotten his father, his family and even his faith as he is reduced to working as a swineherd – something no faithful Jew would consider. It is there, at his lowest ebb, that he “comes to his senses”: he remembers, and the key thing he remembers is his father – his father’s house, his father’s goodness, his father’s love. It proves to be a saving memory for the boy as he re-turns home to seek his father’s forgiveness. But it is in fact the Father who proves to be prodigal – in the sense of extravagant – running out to meet his son, embracing him and restoring his dignity in the sym-bols of the ring, the robe and the sandals. The twist is that Jesus told this story to the scribes and Pharisees who were grumbling that Jesus was mixing with tax collectors and sinners and eating with them. They are represented in the fig-ure of the elder son who cannot countenance for-giving the younger son. He can only remember the wrongs his brother has committed, and so he is un-able to forgive. Application We are invited to bring resolution to this un-finished story. It is unfinished because we do not know what the elder son did next. The father stands outside the house pleading with him to enter and join the celebration. As the camera fades out, we are left wondering what the elder son will do, and more importantly: what will I do? Jesus poses this startling challenge to us: will you embrace the way of forgiveness in your own life, and so join the cele-bration of God’s mercy, or do you prefer to stay out-side, clinging to your memory of hurts, anger and offences? This year is a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Fran-cis invites us to come in and join the celebration of God’s prodigal, extravagant mercy. The motto of this Jubilee Year is “Merciful like the Father”, and we are invited “not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure”. Pope Francis is fond of saying that God never tires of offering us mercy; it is we who tire of asking for it. God is indeed a prodigal Father who today pleads with each of us not to remember our hurts, but ra-ther to remember God’s love and join in the dance of God’s mercy. 160 YEARS OF OUR DIOCESE ON FEBRUARY 29, 1856, POPE PIUS IX SIGNED A PAPAL DECREE forming the Diocese of Hamilton.
