AM j we sre told that God will ao act because Qod is jut. I But I claim that God cannot juatly puniah those who 1 disobey, nor reward thoae who obey HI« laws. Feligioua people tell us that God la "The Great First I Cause": that God created all things—mankind, the uni. verse, nature and all her laws. Who to answerable for a thing that ia caused: hi who ceuoee it, or ho who doea not cause it? He who eeuaee It to answerable. And God ia "Thf I Great First Cauoe" of all things. And the cause of all things to answerable for all thinga. If God created aU things He muat have created tha 1 evil aa well aa the good. 1 Who, then, la reaponaible for good and evil? Only God, for He made them. ] He who createa all la reaponaible for all. God created | „all: God is responsible for all. He who creates nothing la reaponaible for nothing. ! Man created nothing: maa ia reaponaible for nothing. Therefore man ia not reaponaible for hta nature, nor i for the acta prompted by that nature. Therefore God cannot juatly puniah man for hia acts, j Therefore the Divine law, with its eodo of rewardi snd punlahmenta, ia not s juat law, and cannot hsve emanated from a juat God. Therefore the Chrlatian religion ia built upon a foundation of error, and there are no auch things u God'a wrath, God'a pardon; heaven or hell. That argument haa never been anawered. But at* totnpta have been made to evade it, and the pica most commonly put forward haa been ao gracefully ex-pressed by Mr. G. K. Chesterton that I will quote it in hia own worda: . No, the queatlon round which this controversy haa circled for agea to aimply thia: Clearly God can, in the exerclae of Hia omnipotence, give part of Himaelf to Hia creaturea; can give HLs strength to the bull, or Hia beauty to the lily. Could God poaelbly, In the exerclae of Hia omnipotence, give to one of Hia creaturea aome portion of that other quality at Hia—Hia originating power, Hia power of primal Invention, thia making thinga from nothing or Himaelf? If God can do all things, can« jj He not make man free? Can He not give man tha power to create actions as fteqd prestos »tars! J He csn give Hia force; csn He give s little of hii sovereignty? Can He, in ahort, create a kind of little God—an "Imago Dei?" The anawer to that quaint pleco of reaaonlng is that it bega a queatlon. For I do not aay that God cannot , give to many any power He chooaea; but that God is j reaponaible, and man la not reaponaible, for the nature j and the acta of any power by God beatowed. If man did not invent, n$r create himaelf; If man did not create "the power" beatowed upon him by God; If man did not bestow that power upon himself, , how can man be responsible for the power or for Its < acta? God not only created man; He created the material j of which man waa made, and the lawa of ¿he universe j Into which man waa Introduced. God 1a "Tho Great Firat Cause": He created all thinga: the evil and the good. How can God blams for the effecta of which God to the eauae? For the defeat of all Chrlatian apologlata it U not necessary for me to add another word; the argument to invincible as it atanda. But for the reader'a sake it may be as well to deal rather more fully with what may be to him a new and startling idea. Let ua thea return to Mr. Cheaterton'a plea. God ia said to give to man a "power": a power which, Mr. Chesterton aaya, God "made out of Himaelf." And thia power will create thoughta, will create actions ai God createa «tars. But we see that man cannot create the thought« nor cauae the actions until God givea him the "power. Then it to tbe "power" that creates the thoughts « acts. Then it ia not man, but the "power"—the power Sid made out of Himaelf and bestowed upon man-at createa the thoughta or acta. Then the "power is s kind of lord or ruler made by God, snd put by God over msn, sa s rider to plsced upon a horae. or a p»l(,t on a ahlp. Then man is no more reaponaible for tbe \ sets or the thougrhta of thto ruling power than a hor* is reaponoible for the acta of a jockey, or a ahlp the acta of a pilot. (To be continued.) From Bnyil to China and from Finland to Spain, the world is shaken by disorders and civil wars. Few countries are spared, few know even relative tranquility. Whit ia happening? When so many danger spots appear simultaneously, certainly they arc not isolated incidents. There must be some relation between the German and Austrian troubles, the Finnish disturbances, the oonfussion in Spain, the crisis in Rumania, the agitation in Italy, the struggle in Poland, wt to speak of the civil wars in Latin America, the claaa war in China and the events in India. „ \ The economic crisis is undoubtedly the biggest single factor. The government, as the first safe-guard meaaures, closed the borders to immigrant labor, of whom about 1,600,000 are already in France, sent 2,300 foreign workers to their native countries, and the parlam&nt appropriated |26,000,000 as an em«rg«ncy measure to combat the unemployment.—Editor). In Germany the situation of the working ciaas is tragic. The unemployed number 4,000,000 but there are more millinons on part time. German employers have begun a stern offensive sgainst prevailing wage acales, aided by the Bruendng government which is throwing a great burden of unemployment insurance on the hacks of the workers themselves. In Great Britain, years of the Labor government have proved unavailing in coping with unemployment and it remains in power at the price of doing nothing effective. In Spain a stupid dictatorship has tried to stem the economic crisis by embarking on a policy of mad protectionism.
