Saj Jezus ni hotel biti čarovnik, ki bi s čarobno palico dočaral raj na zemljo. Pač pa je hotel posvetiti, nahraniti človeka v delu in trpljenju njegovega vsakdanjega življenja. »V potu svojega obraza boš užival kruh, dokler se ne povrneš v zemljo« (1 Mz 3,19), je bilo rečeno človeku na začetku časov. Kruh je torej tista prvina, ki odseva človekovo usodo: njegovo preživljanje in njegovo sožitje v skupnosti. V znamenju kruha in vsega, kar nam pomeni, smo po Jezusovem dejanju izzvani v vsej veri našega srca, ki jo premoremo. Jezus je opazil lačne množice. Toda prednoje storil čudež, je izzval učence k sodelovanju in darovanju. »Kje naj kupimo kruha, da bi ti jedli?« Premogli so le pet ječmenovih hlebov in dve ribi. Bilo je neznatno malo, revno. Vendar vse. Za Jezusa dovolj, da je iz malega napravil veliko. Skromni dar je spremenil v bogato pojedino. Čudeža ne kupujemo z dvesto ali tisoč denarji, marveč ga omogočamo s svojo udeležbo, s svojim darovanjem. Količine so vedno revne, neznatne, zanemarljive ... nikakršne, a vendar, ko jih izročimo Gospodu v celoti, jih on spremeni v nesorazmerno velik blagoslov. Govorica vere se ne izraža v »realističnem« ugotavljanju nesposobnosti, neznatnosti in gledanju skromnih rezerv, marveč v velikodušni razpoložljivosti in zaupanju, ki presega človeško logiko. Kristus ni spremenil kamenja v kruh, marveč je pomnožil kruh, delo človeških rok, da bi spremenil človekovo kamnito, zaprto, egoistično srce. Galilejski čudež se torej še nadaljuje. Jezus sprejema darovani kruh in ribice, da bi nad njimi izrekel blagoslov in jih razdelil množici. Kruh in ribe. Znamenje nas samih. Znamenje naše osebne podaritve Bogu in ljudem. Da tudi sami postanemo kruh in znamenje božje ljubezni do ljudi. Razlomil je kruh in ga razdelil. »Bog nam daje vse, da mu lahko vse vračamo. To je »zahvala«: da svobodno vračamo Očetu bogastvo, ki nam ga je podaril. Ker nam je Oče dal svojega Sina, ker se je Sin zavzel za svoje brate, lahko skupaj darujemo evharistijo, največje darilo, ki rešuje svet.« (M. Quoist) Razmislek ob Božji besedi 18. nedelje med letom Saj vendar človek ne živi samo od kruha! »Ne iščete me zato, ker ste videli čudeže, ampak ker ste jedli od hlebov in se nasitili.« Tako je Kristus razčistil osnovni nesporazum, ki nastane, ko se iskanje zaustavi pri pogrnjeni mizi, pri spominih na »polne lonce mesa«, pri domotožni želji po vračanju v sužnost. Iz takšne zablokiranosti nas Kristus vabi, a ne sili: »Človek ne živi samo od kruha ...« (Mt 4,4). Brez Kristusa in njegovih čudežev smo si uspeli preskrbeti jedi in pijače v izobilju. Vsako jutro bi lahko nabrali po naših mestnih smetnjakih tone in tone zavrženega kruha. Toda, ali je takšna »polnost« vredna človeškega dostojanstva? Ali če je nekje drugačna polnost življenja, jo mar lahko zaživimo brez Kristusa? Za Janezov evangelij je značilno še nekaj drugega. Ta evangelij Jezusa opisuje kot Boga, ki postaja »meso« ali človek. Človeku se popolnoma približa in z njim zaživi v istem domovanju. Hkrati pa ga zaznamuje s svojim »duhom« in pritegne v svet božjega, v dinamiko duha in svobode. Kristus vedno srečuje človeka v neki situaciji, v tem, kar živi, hkrati pa ga vabi naprej, ga dviga in spodbuja, da preraste meje, v katere bi se rad sproti zaprl. Po svojem gonu bi radi živeli zakon prilagodljivosti, Kristus pa nas postavlja v zakon preraščanja iz neobčutljivosti, lenobe, v zakon zvestobe duhu, s katerim smo zaznamovani. Po Kristusu smo poučeni, pravi v istem smislu sv. Pavel, »da nam je treba odložiti, kar zadeva prejšnje življenje, starega človeka, ki se kvari po varljivih strasteh, da se prenavljamo po duhu svojega mišljenja in si oblečemo novega človeka«. Novi človek ne sedi ob »loncih mesa«, marveč potuje naprej v smeri Tistega, ki blagruje lačne in uboge v duhu. Njegovo prizadevanje ni jed, ki mine, temveč jed, ki ostane za večno življenje. Roger Schutz, taizejski prior, je dal iščoči mladini, ki seje zbirala okrog njega, naslednji napotek: »Živi to, kar si v evangeliju spoznal, pa naj bo še tako malo!« Morda nam je težko v življenju naenkrat spoznati Kristusa v vsej polnosti. Če pa bomo premagali skušnjavo zasičenosti in ostali zvesti svojemu globokemu iskanju in rasti v novega človeka, nam bo lažje nekega dne po veri sprejeti navzočnost Boga v Kristusu ter ga slaviti v radosti evharističnega slavja. 0, 29 07 20,2 svete maše - masses Do 05.08. 2012 17. First Reading 1 Kings 3:5. 7-12 When King Solomon is offered any gift from God, he chooses not riches, nor power, but the wisdom of a discerning heart. Second Reading Romans 8:28-30 St Paul assures us that despite our suf-feings the Lord will bring about his purpose, which is to share his glory now and more fully at the end of time. Gospel Matthew 13:44-52 Jesus compares the kingdom of God to the finding of a treasure and a rare pearl. Both demand a committed response. We may complain about bank charges, but at least having a bank account removes the need to bury our money in the ground. This is what was done in ancient times in the face of, say, the peril of a marauding army. If the people who buried their wealth died before they could come back to retrieve it, then hidden treasures lay underground for future generations to find. In fact, over the years there have been some amazing finds. Sometimes it may happen when a farmer glimpses pieces of the treasure accidentally while ploughing. At other times the discovery may occur after years of searching. A few years ago in Staffordshire, in central England, an unemployed man, who had spent eighteen years regularly carrying a metal detector across endless fields, suddenly struck gold. One day he came across an An-glo-Saxon treasure hoard containing hundreds of gold ornaments, worth over three million pounds. It was worth waiting a lifetime for and, in a press interview, he described his delight and how gobsmacked his friends had been. And he ended with the question: "Is there anything better than this to be found?" Jesus compares the kingdom of God to such finds. First, a hidden treasure; but notice that it is a surprise find, which fills the man with joy, but he does not yet possess it. He has only glimpsed it and seen its amazing value. Next he hides it, keeps it from the owner of the field, so that he can plan how to make it his own. This may sound like a shocking deception to some people, but Jesus often uses rather outrageous examples to make his main point: that the man is willing to put everything aside in his life so he can obtain the treasure. So, unlike the rich man in the Gospel who had glimpsed Jesus' goodness but refused to sell everything and follow him, this man is willing to give up everything so that he can finally possess this treasure. Jesus reinforces the message with the parable of the pearl beyond price. But this time the merchant has been spending a lifetime searching for the one really great pearl. And then the same pattern occurs. He finds, he sells all, and then he possesses. Such is his joy at the discovery of this incomparable pearl that he risks everything to obtain it. Over and over again in the Gospel story the discovery of the presence of the kingdom of God in Jesus brings a joyful response. It may be revealed through his forgiveness, his healings, or the 'He... sells everything he owns and buys the field." way he makes known a glimpse of God's love for God's creatures, but each discovery leads to a commitment to Christ. It may be Zacchaeus who comes down from his tree and is invited to the kingdom, or it may be Matthew himself who is called from his banker's desk and puts all his energies into following Christ. Everything now is risked to obtain this pearl beyond price. In a secular society, where the pressure of market forces so dominates our daily lives, the treasure of the Gospel can lie hidden deep beneath the hard earth. Not only unbelievers but some Christians as well can act as though the Gospel is just another creed. We come to church and go through the motions. Then suddenly, through God's grace, the treasure may be discovered. The words of the Gospel are heard as true, perhaps for the first time. God's rule, as it became present in Christ's ministry, is discovered as something real. His love, his forgiveness, his divine presence, his promise of eternal life: this is the treasure that becomes the one thing worth having. This discovery may come in a sudden, surprising conversion or after years of patient seeking. But the pearl and the treasure are glimpsed, not fully possessed. We have a glimpse of glory now, but it determines the way we lead our lives. Our priorities are changed: we see things differently. Many of the material things that we strived for, even if they are good in themselves, become less important. The joy of the discovery can be infectious. It can draw others to set their heart on a treasure that will not fade but will only be fully realised in heaven. Striving for such a treasure can transform our lives. And then, in faith, we will know the answer to the question, "Is there anything better than this to be found?" First Reading Isaiah 55:1-3 The prophet calls us to fullness of life. Listen and your soul will live. Second Reading Romans 8:35. 37-39 Paul proclaims the utter certainty of Christ's triumph over death. Gospel Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus escapes the threats of Herod, and meets the needs of the crowds. f-\ "As he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd." v._J On the last Sunday in July, every year, great crowds gather, and people come from all corners of Ireland, to climb Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain. About twenty thousand people can normally be expected to travel to County Mayo, and with the help of a stout wooden staff in their hands, and in the company of friends and strangers, they make their way up the two-and-a-half-thousand-foot mountain. Sometimes the weather is fine. Sometimes the weather can be extremely bad, and the last section of the climb is very steep. But, whatever the weather, there is a great feeling of solidarity, the goodness of being together and doing the same thing together. There is great friendliness to be found in that experience. The mountain itself is cone-shaped, and it stands out in a striking manner against the backdrop of the surrounding hills. Sweeping down to the sea, it dips its toes in the waters of Clew Bay. It is a mountain that cries out to be climbed, and people have been doing so for thousands of years, since well before the coming of the Christian Gospel and the traditions of St Patrick. As a high place, it speaks of being nearer to God. It calls people away from the grind of daily life. It invites us to look up to the skies and, from the vantage point of its summit, it shows us how to get life into perspective, and to understand the true values of our mortal journey. In the days of Jesus, the people of Galilee came to realise that there was someone special in their midst. A young man had appeared who, it seemed, had special powers of healing, and who spoke in ways that captivated his listeners. This was someone who just had to be seen, and someone that people wanted to listen to. And so the crowds began to gather. The people knew that they were on to a good thing. This man can cure our sicknesses. This man seems to understand life, and has an air of authority about him that persuades you that he is the genuine article: not a showman, but a saviour. Jesus himself knew all about the problems of being in the public eye. Your words and your actions will be scrutinised. You will be misreported and misrepresented. Your enemies will seek to destroy you in whatever way they can. King Herod Antipas, a vicious ruler, had just executed John the Baptist, and so Jesus could very well be next in line. He leaves Herod's territory and moves along the coast, hoping for some quiet time to compose himself. But his boat is not far from shore, so the crowds can see where he is making for. When he steps ashore, the crowds are waiting for him. Now Jesus will show us what true power is, and how it should be exercised. These people need their sicknesses to be healed - Jesus tends to them. They need guidance - Jesus preaches the word of life to them. They are hungry and need food - so Jesus feeds them, and teaches his disciples to feed them from the little that they have. The issues of health, education and welfare are all addressed here. These are common needs in all of humankind, and we are called to attend to them all, in every person. When St Paul gave up his life of violence, in which he sought to bring the world to order according to his own narrow view, he embraced the love of Jesus Christ. Paul, blinded on the Damascus road, now sees the world in a new way. Caught up in the love of the risen Lord, Paul opens his heart to the whole world. Not for Paul any more, the narrow sectarian attitudes of his past. Now, Paul will be "all things to all people", if he may win them to Christ Jesus. The power and might that carry such weight in this world, the reliance on force to solve problems, all this is gone. Paul has met with the risen Lord, who overcame death, and tells us that now there is no reason for us to be afraid. Paul encourages us that, whatever trials we endure, we shall triumph in the end. The people who climb the holy mountain do so in friendship and solidarity, helping one another along the way. This is our way of life, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
