In the absence of a hero, one had to be invented; moreover, the hero was determined by the codification of his heroic death rather than by his life, i.e. his heroic deeds. In the case of Leon Štukelj, the mythologisation of the hero may be analysed through two deaths: the symbolic and the "real" one. Another analogy with ancient mythology may be traced in the topos of greeting Štukelj with ave, the equivalent of the Greek cai`re, which has been a traditional greeting for cult heroes since Homer's description of Patroclus' burial in the IliadNa primeru slovenskega olimpionika Leona Štuklja članek z uporabo Vernantovih konceptov analize antične mitologije razpravlja o možnostih branja sodobne mitologije junaka. Če junaka ni bilo, si ga je bilo potrebno izmisliti, junaka pa ni toliko določalo njegovo življenje (tj. junaški podvigi) kot kodifikacija junaške smrti. Primer Leona Štuklja nam omogoča analizo mitologizacije junaka skozi dve smrti: simbolne in "prave".
