It argues that new and old media are not only consumed as texts, but are embodied and embedded in our everyday life as material sensory objects, and are constantly part of our social and private environment. The author argues that, in order to assess the social \"effects\" of new media, these changes require a more systematic investigation of the prothetic and sensoric role of the media, and demand a rethinking of the marginalised tradition within communication research represented by authors like Innis and McLuhan and studies of material culture in general. Secondly, it argues that the important change in contemporary cultural production is the economisation of culture and the promotional prefiguration of cultural texts. Through framing practices, texts are contextualised and semantically extended and should therefore not be treated as self-contained aesthetic artefacts. In closing, the article explores how the semantic extension of a text should be addressed in the context of studies of media reception"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Članek se ukvarja z vprašanjem, ali integracija novih medijev v vsakdanje življenje ter hkrati intenzivna komodifikacija kulture in promocijsko okvirjanje kulturnih produktov, zahtevajo nov premislek o preiskovanju medijskega vpliva in recepcije. Avtorica ugotavlja, da postaja zaradi vseprisotnosti novih kulturnih tehnologij, kjer nimamo več opravka s klasičnim množičnim komuniciranjem, vprašanje protetične in senzorične vloge medijev aktualnejše kot prej ter da mu je potrebno posvetiti več pozornosti, da bi lahko preiskovali \"učinke\" novih medijev. Raziskovanje medijev in novih kulturnih tehnologij kot materialnih objektov je potrebno postaviti enakopravneje ob bok študijam interpretacij medijskih tekstov oz. raziskovanju vpliva tekstov, ki se mu tradicionalno najbolj posveča proučevanje medijskega občinstva. Hkrati pa se v kontekstu izrazite ekonomizacije kulture zavzema za obravnavanje ekonomije in kulture kot dveh medsebojno povezanih področij. Meni, da je ekonomijo in kulturo mogoče najučinkoviteje povezati z dvojno kontekstualizacijo: z upoštevanjem \"razširitve kulturnega teksta v družbeni prostor\", torej s študijem promocijskega okvirjanja teksta, ki proizvaja tekste za občinstvo ter na drugi strani, z razumevanjem občinstva/bralstva ne kot psihološko-demografskih entitet in vira izkustva, temveč kot produkta historičnih diskurzov, ki pri uporabi medijev uporabljajo družbeno proizvedene interpretativne repertoarje.
