This interactivity distinguishes virtual reality from conventional media such as video and television. It offers a wide range of applications, including IT, education, medicine, military, and space science. The development of virtual reality is closely linked to advances in information technology, in particular to powerful computers that enable three-dimensional interfaces. There are several types of virtual reality, ranging from non-immersive, where the user is not fully involved in the virtual world, to full virtual reality, where the presence in the virtual world is pronounced. Augmented reality integrates virtual and real elements, while mixed reality allows interaction between the two worlds. Virtual reality is proving to be an effective method of rehabilitation, especially for patients rehabilitating in a home environment. It allows control over external stimuli, flexibility of exercises and recording of progress. The use of virtual reality for upper limb and gait rehabilitation is promising as it improves motor skills and increases brain activity. For patients with neurodegenerative diseases, virtual reality is used to assess cognitive functions. In children, virtual reality can improve cognitive, motor and social skills, and quality of life. Virtual reality is therefore a versatile tool that can enhance patients' rehabilitation and improve their quality of life</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Navidezna resničnost je računalniško ustvarjeno okolje, ki omogoča interakcijo med uporabnikom in navideznimi elementi preko posebnih naprav. Ta interaktivnost loči navidezno resničnost od običajnih medijev, kot sta video in televizija. Navidezna resničnost je uporabna na različnih področjih, vključno z informatiko, izobraževanjem, medicino, vojsko in vesoljsko znanostjo. Razvoj navidezne resničnosti je tesno povezan z napredkom informacijske tehnologije, predvsem pa z zmogljivostjo računalnikov, ki omogočajo trirazsežne vmesnike. Obstaja več vrst navidezne resničnosti, od neimerzivne, kjer uporabnik ni povsem vključen v navidezni svet, do popolne navidezne resničnosti, kjer je prisotnost v navideznem svetu izrazita. Razširjena resničnost povezuje navidezne in resnične elemente, mešana resničnost pa omogoča interakcijo med obema svetovoma. Navidezna resničnost se je izkazala kot učinkovita metoda rehabilitacije, zlasti pri bolnikih, ki se rehabilitirajo v domačem okolju. Omogoča nadzor nad zunanjimi dražljaji, prilagodljivost vaj ter beleženje napredka. Uporaba navidezne resničnosti za rehabilitacijo zgornjih okončin in hoje je obetavna, saj izboljšuje motorične sposobnosti in povečuje možganske aktivnosti. Pri bolnikih z nevrodegenerativnimi boleznimi se navidezna resničnost uporablja za ocenjevanje kognitivnih funkcij. Pri otrocih pa lahko navidezna resničnost izboljša kognitivne, motorične in socialne spretnosti ter kakovost življenja.
