Prispevek se naslanja na Svetovno pobudo o kronični obstruktivni pljučni bolezni, ki jo vodita Nacionalni inštitut za srce, pljuča in kri Združenih držav Amerike ter Svetovna zdravstvena organizacija. Pobudo je sprejelo tudi Respiratorno društvo Slovenije. Sistematsko so prikazani: definicija, epidemiološki podatki, dejavniki tveganja, patogeneza, patologija, patofiziologija in zdravljenje KOPB. Poudarjen je pomen prenehanja kajenja in zdravljenja z zdravili ter rehabilitacije.
