For the past 20 years, the incidence of malaria has been increasing. This increase can be attributed, in large part, to increasing resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to current antimalarial drugs, to the appearance of Plasmodium in nonendemic areas and to the increase in travel to and migration from areas where malaria is endemic.
