The temporal and local context is based on the prevalence of arhaic house type – so-called smokehouses in the Pohorje and Kozjak areas, which is defined through sources and literature in the article, showing the way of life in smokehouses and their development and decay. By analysing the causes of death, we confirm the parallels between deaths due to tuberculosis in an environment of industrialisation and urbanisation (Maribor) compared to rural areas (Pohorje, Kozjak) and conclude that smokehouses did not have a statistically significant influence on the causes of death or that their influence was nullified by other life circumstances. We show that a sufficiently large corpus of records eliminates the anomalies of non-professional identification of causes of death and that the age and sex parameters in the corpus confirm the general findings for Styria and suggest avenues for further researchV članku prikazujemo povezanost bivalnih razmer in vzrokov za smrt, zabeleženih v 13.330 zapisih iz matičnih knjig s konca 19. stoletja za Maribor, Kozjak, Pohorje, Juršince in Cirkulane. Časovni in krajevni okvir utemeljujemo z razširjenostjo dimnic na območjih Pohorja in Kozjaka, ki jo skozi vire in literaturo v članku definiramo, prikažemo način življenja v dimnicah in njihov razvoj ter razkroj. Z analizo vzrokov smrti potrjujemo vzporednice med umiranjem za tuberkulozo v okolju industrializacije in urbanizacije (Maribor) v primerjavi s podeželjem (Pohorje, Kozjak) ter ugotavljamo, da dimnice niso statistično pomembno vplivale na razloge za smrt ali pa so njihov vpliv izničile druge življenjske okoliščine.
