She learned Slovenian and lectured on Japan, Japanese women, and Japanese customs in many cities in the 1930s. Cultural institutions representing the Far East would ask her for help. She would lend objects from the collection she and her husband owned for exhibitions and explain the particular features of the exhibits on display. She advised the producers during the preparations for the performance of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly in Ljubljana. When representatives from Japan visited Slovenia, Marija Tsuneko Skušek was usually invited as a translator. During the last years of her life, she worked on her domestic collection of mostly Chinese and Japanese artefacts and participated in the preparation of exhibitions in the central Slovenian museums, which opened shortly after her death</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Tsuneko Kondo Kawase, kasneje uradno Marija Skušek, je bila po preselitvi v Ljubljano leta 1920 prva promotorica japonske kulture na Slovenskem in številni so jo poznali kot »ljubljansko Japonko«. Naučila se je slovenščine in je imela v tridesetih letih 20. stoletja v številnih mestih veliko predavanj o Japonski, japonski ženi in navadah Japoncev. Za pomoč so jo prosile kulturne ustanove, ki so predstavljale Daljni vzhod. Za razstave je posojala predmete iz zbirke, ki sta jo imela z možem, in na razstavah tudi razlagala posebnosti razstavljenih eksponatov. Opernim ustvarjalcem je svetovala ob pripravah na izvedbo Puccinijeve Madama Butterfly v Ljubljani. Ko so v Slovenijo prihajali predstavniki z Japonske, je bila Marija Tsuneko Skušek običajno povabljena za prevajalko.
