In the area of the abandoned village of Kumrova vas bird species composition is more diverse than in the late successional andclimax stands. In total, 35 bird species were registered; just four of themare present on all of the seven sample plots. Some endangered species werepresent, e.g. Picus canus, Dendrocopos minor, Lanius collurio, Streptopelia turtur , Strix uralensis. Successional stages increase bird species diversity; therefore they should be at least partly maintained. For the same reason, pioneer tree species should be preserved in natural (climax) forestsPrispevek obravnava ptice v gozdovih sekundarne sukcesije na Kočevskem. V zaraščajoči se Kumrovi vasi je pestrost ptičjih vrst višja kot v okoliških odraščajočih in odraslih enomernih sestojih. Skupno smo evidentirali 35 vrst ptic, le štiri vrste živijo na vseh točkah. Evidentirali smo tudi ogrožene vrste ptic, in sicer pivko, malega detla, rjavega srakoperja, divjo grlico terkozačo.
