We identified the following elements of the internationalization with the comparative historical method: mobility of students, mobility of academic staff, a common teaching language, accreditation, uniform curriculum, the export of higher education systems and dissemination of researches. Historical elements have more or less power during the historical social events and have expressed varying degrees. Closed nation states that emerged in the first half of the 19th century have limited elements the most, and after the peak of nationalism with World War II, the elements were once again brought to life by encouraging social circumstances for internationalization (globalization). Elements were linked to various forms of internationalization acoording to Jane Knight's theory (2007b) at the end of the article. Historical elements of internationalization are the basic building blocks of every form of internationalization. Due to the loaded burdens on university caused by the environment (institutional differentiation, the emergence of new disciplines, nationalism, market mechanisms and the massification), we can not simply revive the Middle Ages, but we need to carefully introduce each element taking into account the current environment and the accumulated historical heritage"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Članek se ukvarja z internacionalizacijo univerz in ima dva dela. V prvem delu identificira in opiše osnovne historične prvine/gradnike internacionalizacije univerz. Identificirani so naslednji elementi, navdahnjeni z univerzalizmom zgodnjega akademskega diskurza: mobilnost študentov, mobilnost akademskega osebja, skupni učni jezik, enotni kurikulum, akreditacija programov, izvoz visokošolskih sistemov in diseminacija raziskovalnih rezultatov. Ti elementi so imeli skozi čas in prostor variabilno, večjo ali manjšo, moč, odvisno od konteksta univerz in od burnosti družbenega dogajanja okrog njih in na njih samih. Po relativnem vzponu in razcvetu, v obdobju od 12. do 18. stoletja, jih je pričel vse bolj omejevati proces fragmentiranja imperialnih družb srednjega veka, razviden v zapiranju nacionalnih skupnosti v nacionalne države, čemur so univerze sledile. V tem obdobju ustanovljene univerze je zaznamovala kontekstualno pogojena instrumentalizacija akademske sfere za potrebe državnih in/ali nacionalnih ciljev. Šele po drugi svetovni vojni se historični elementi internacionalizacije univerz prično znova odločneje vračati v akademski prostor, spodbujeni predvsem z naraščajočo povojno trgovinsko liberalizacijo in splošnejšo ekonomsko globalizacijo. V drugem delu članka je prikazano, da so posamezni (historični) elementi internacionalizacije tesno povezani tudi z različnimi oblikami sodobne internacionalizacije, kakor jih opredeljuje J. Knight.
