Although the majority of his texts are written in prose, his literary style maintains a fundamental relationship with the poetic basis of his writing. This is true not only of the texts that are normally read as \"pure literature\", but also of those engaged in polemics with the predominant Slovenian cultural politics of his time. The same complexity is observed in his literary approaches to political and ontological themes, which cannot be effectively analysed by partial ideological interpretations. Cankar's socialism is just as imbued with rebellion as his Christian idealism.
