Due to different definitions of dry eye the prevalence ranges from 5 % to over 35 % at various ages. The ethiopatogenetic classes of dry eye are aqueous tear-deficient dry eye and evaporative dry eye.The diagnosis can be made by thorough medical history and different diagnostic tests: tear break-up time test, ocular surface dye staining, Schirmerćs test, expression of Meibomian glands, and corneal sensitivity test.These tests should be performed in this sequence. Recently published guidelines propose a severity classification based on clinical signs and symptoms, with treatment recommendations according to severity level.
