The main emphasis is on the elements characteristic of this journalistic genre and contribute to its reception by the audience. A theoretical framework was devised which was then used in the empirical part ofthe study. It is based on the assumption that commentary has certain properties which are not present in other kinds of discourse (an instance of onesided communication). The empirical study led to the following conclusions on commentary discourse: 1)commentary should contain short informative and clear utterances; 2)commentary should follow the pictorial information in a logical (stimulus-response) sequence; as the commentator cannot receive feedback from the viewer, he should pay extra attention to a)relevance, b)quality, c)quantity, and d)speech performance, and 4)the commentator should show his of her personal interest for the event.
