A large share of the buildings, especially of the housing stock that was built in the past from clay and clay derivatives, is still in use after several centuries and offers very pleasant living conditions. During the 70s of the last century building with clay almost vanished completely from Europe. It blossomed again after 1984, first in France and soon afterwards in Germany and elsewhere. The building material, used for several millennia to build homes, has returned, this time with an ecological denominator. Despite severe prejudice clay buildings are being built in ecologically conscious countries by using modernised traditional techniques In Europe, three techniques are being applied for building with clay: packed clay, clay bricks and a combination of timber and clay materials. The article describes clay, which complies with contemporary physical, functional design and construction demands. The main properties of the material and laboratory tests, needed before the clay material and the building technique are chosen, are shown. The article also presents some projects undertaken in Europe that prove the hypothesis about the suitability of the material for building"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Ilovica je naravno mineralno gradivo, s katerim jc mogoče graditi tudi v evropskem prostoru, kjer so klimatski pogoji zelo raznoliki. Velik del stavbnega, zlasti stanovanjskega fonda, ki je bil v preteklosti zgrajen iz ilovice in ilovnatih gradiv, je v uporabi še po več stoletjih in nudi zelo ugodno bivalno klimo. Gradnja z ilovico je v 70-tih letih prejšnjega stoletja v evropskem prostoru skoraj popolnoma izginila. Ponovni preporod je doživela po letu 1984, najprej v Franciji, takoj zatem še v Nemčiji in drugod. Gradivo, ki je nekaj tisočletij služilo za gradnjo bivališč, se je vrnilo, tokrat z ekološkim predznakom. Kljub močnim predsodkom se po okoljsko osveščenih državah pojavljajo ilovnate zgradbe, grajene v posodobljenih tradicionalnih tehnikah. V evropskem prostoru se danes v glavnem uporabljajo tri tehnike gradnje z ilovico: butana ilovnata gradnja, gradnja z ilovnatimi zidaki in kombinacija lesa in ilovnatih gradiv. V članku je prikazana ilovica, ki ustreza sodobnim gradbeno-fizikalnim, funkcionalnim, oblikovnim in gradbeno-tehničnim zahtevam. Predstavljene so bistvene lastnosti tega gradiva in laboratorijski preizkusi, ki so danes potrebni pred izbiro ilovnatega gradiva in tehnologije gradnje.
