Steel is characterized by high bearing strength and low price, and will remain the most important structural material also in future. Welded joints, due to their strength, surpass all other methods of permanent joining; therefore, only the materials permitting high-strength joints making use of the good properties of the parent metal will be taken into consideration in engineering design. One should be aware that with the development of new materials, welding will have less chances left. Local heating to a high temperature and high cooling rates, the result of which is an unfavourable structure in the welded joint, can namely never be avoided</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Da bi zmanjšali lastno maso nosilnih konstrukcij in čim bolje izkoristili porabljena gradiva, iščemo nove materiale, ki bodo imeli čim boljše mehanske lastnosti ter jih je mogoče spajati v zanesljive trdne zveze. Tudi v bodoče bo ostalo jeklo, ki ima dobro nosilnost in nizko ceno, najpomembnejši konstrukcijski material. Zvari spoj po trdnosti prekaša vse druge načine neločljivega spajanja, zato bodo za izdelavo konstrukcij prišli v poštev le materiali, ki jih bo mogoče variti v tako trdne spoje, da bodo izkoriščene vse dobre lastnosti osnovnega materiala. Vedeti pa moramo, da ima varjenje v primerjavi z razvojem novih materialov manj možnosti.
