Kirurški poseg v metabolizemomogoča bistveno izboljšanje metabolnihentitet, predvsem sladkorne bolezni tudi pribolnikih z nižjim indeksom telesne mase (ITM).Razumevanje različnih metabolnih učinkov jepremaknilo paradigmo bariatrične kirurgijeiz samega zmanjševanja telesne teže v metaboličnokirurgijo, ki vpliva na celotni telesni metabolizem.Izbira primerne kirurške tehnike zaposameznega bolnika je pomemben dejavnik,ki dolgoročno vpliva na izboljšanje spremljajočihbolezni in kakovost zdravljenja in temeljina splošno sprejetih priporočilih za obravnavobolnikov z bolezensko debelostjo.
