Vseboval je prilogi Slovenski tednik in Rodoljub. Bil je političen časopis, prvi slovenski dnevnik, vodilno slovensko liberalno glasilo pred 1. svetovno vojno. Deloval je pod geslom: »Vse za narod, svobodo in napredek«. Med uredniki so bili: Ivan Železnikar, Josip Jurčič in Ivan Tavčar. Leta 1894 postane Slovenski narod glasilo Napredne stranke.
