It can function as a coordinating conjunction and a particle denoting either mood or focus. When being translated into a language lacking an equivalent, the translator must choose the most appropriate solution from a large array of options. The choice is made not only on the lexico-semantic level, but also based on function, syntax and genre. To study this question, a contrastive syntactic model is therefore needed, in which all of the aforementioned parameters are taken into account. Med drugim je lahko besedilni povezovalec, naklonski členek in fokusni členek. Pri prevajanju v jezike brez primerljive prvine, mora prevajalec izbrati najbolj ustrezno rešitev iz večjega števila možnih prevedkov. Pri tem ni samo relevantna leksikalno-semantična raven, temveč tudi funkcijska, skladenjska in zvrstnostna.
