Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) loss is an early sign of glaucomaand may precede the optic disc damage and visual field loss. Scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) is a quantitative method measuring the RNFL thickness surrounding the optic disc. The instrument (GDx, Laser Diagnostics Technologies, San Diego, CA) uses a near-infrared diode polarized light which by passing through the birefringent RNFL undergoes a change of polarization (i. e. retardation). The resulting phase shift (retardation) is related to thethickness of the RNFL. The method is used primarily in the diagnosis of glaucoma, but it is also helpful in assessment of the RNFL in optic neuropathyof different etiopathogenesis. Conclusions. In the article we presented the results of SLP in a healthy subject and in glaucoma patients with different stages of the disease. In the diagnosis of early and moderate glaucoma SLP has low sensitivity and specificity and cannot substitute a thorough ophthalmologic examination. Stanjšanje v plasti retinskih živčnih vlaken (PRŽV) je zgodnji znakglavkoma in se lahko pojavi pred prvimi spremembami na papili vidnega živca in pred izpadi v vidnem polju. Skenirajoča laserska polarimetrija (SLP) je metoda, s katero lahko kvantitativno določimo debelino PRZV okrog papile. Naprava za analizo PRŽV (GDx, Laser Diagnostics Technologies, San Diego, CA) uporablja za izvor polarizirano svetlobo diodnega laserja, kateri se pri prehodu skozi PRŽV spremeni polarizacija zaradi dvolomnosti mikrotubulov v živčnih vlaknih. Svetlobni žarek, ki izhaja iz očesa, je časovno zakasnjen. Tako nastali fazni premik pa je premosorazmeren debelini PRŽV. Metoda se uporablja primarno v diagnostiki glavkoma, vendar pa nam pomaga tudi pri določanju debeline PRŽV pri optičnih nevropatijah različne etiopatogeneze. Zaključki. V prispevku smo prikazali rezultate SLP pri zdravem preiskovancu inpri glavkomskih bolnikih z različno stopnjo glavkomske okvare. SLP je premalo občutljiva in specifična metoda pri diagnostiki začetne in srednje hude oblike glavkoma in ne nadomesti temeljitega kliničnega pregleda.
