The most effective method of VTE prophylaxis is antithrombotic drugs. However, they can increase the risk of bleeding. Moreover, in the case of intracranial or intraspinal haemorrhage, the consequences are often more severe than the benefit of preventing a potential VTE. Neurosurgical operations differ in the risks of VTE and bleeding. Therefore, the most optimal method of VTE prophylaxis should be used for a specific operation.
