LXXXIV Oopoiniio ustave ZOA o enakopravnosti žensk končno propadlo WASHINGTON, D.C. — Včeraj je potekel zadnji rok za odobritev dopolnila ameriški ustavi, ki bi izrecno zajamčilo popolno enakopravnost v pravnem oziru žensk z moškimi .v ameriški družbi. Dopolnilo, znano pod kraticami ERA, sta odobrila oba domova zveznega kongresa, potrebno pa bi bilo privoljenje zakonodaj vsaj 38 od 50 ameriških zveznih držav. Prav tu pa se je postopek za odobritev dopolnila zataknil. Ob poteku roka je dopolnilo še potrebovalo odobritev treh zveznih držav. Razne ženske organizacije so vneto podpirale postopek v zvezi s takozvanim ERA dopolnilom. Med najaktivnejšimi je bila Nacional. organizacija žensk (NOW), kateri na-čeljuje Eleanor Smeal. Na zborovanju v Washingtonu preteklo sredo, ki so se ga u-deležili najbolj znani podpi-ratelji ERA, je ga. Smeal napovedala borbo na novembrskih volitvah zoper vse tiste Politike, ki niso glasovali za ER A v državnih zakonodajah v Floridi, Illinoisu, Severni Karolini in Oklahomi. V o-menjneih zakonodajah je le malo manjkalo namreč, da bi odobrile ERA. Opazovalci bitke za odobritev ali odklon ERA dopolnila soglašajo, da je igrala daleč Najvplivnejšo vlogo v zadevi ga, Phyllis S c h 1 a f 1 y ., Ga. Schlafly je vodila borbo zo-Per ERA z izredno zavzetostjo in sposobnostjo, poleg tega jo navduševala druge nasprot-Nice oz. nasprotnike, da so si upali javno nastopati zoper ERA. Tudi ga. Schlafly in drugi Nasprotniki ERA so se zbrali v tem mestu preteklo sredo, a so bili nadvse veseli. Dejali s°,-da so pokopali ERA dopol-Nilo enkrat za vedno. 1 Pristaši ERA z go. Smealo-Vo na čelu pa so obljubili rav-No nasprotno, češ, da se je korba. za ERA in enakoprav-nost žensk v ZDA komaj začela. -----o----- Predsednik Reagan ni bolel nič govoriti o Haigovem odstopu Washington, d.c. — Na svcji tiskovni konferenci preteklo sredo zvečer ni hotel Predsednik Ronald Reagan edgovoriti na številna vprašanja novinarjev v zvezi z nepričakovanim odstopom državnega tajnika Aleksandra Haiga. Reagan je sicer hvalil Hai-fjN, povedal je tudi, da so bila Netočna poročila, da je Haig večkrat odstopil. Dejstvo je, je pojasnil Reagan, da je Haig odstopil samo enkrat in to pretekli teden. / Po mojem mnenju, je zaključil Reagan, ni nič več, kar bi moralo izvedeti ameriško ljudstvo o odstopu Aleksandra Haiga. ------o------ žrtvujmo se za svoj tisk, ohranimo n a S slovenski > Ameriško Domovino! k . <1/ PREDS. Vrhovno sodišče ZDA spregovorilo nejasno o usodi “businga” WASHINGTON, D.C. — U-stavnost ali p r o,t i ustavnost prisilnega prevažanja šolar-' jev v prid desegregacije sistemov javnih šol v ZDA, ali businga, še vedno ni povsem j asna. Ta teden je večina sodnikov vrhovnega sodišča ZDA gasovala odločno, da je u-staven zakon države Kalifornije, ki prepoveduje prisilno prevažanje v vseh slučajih, ko ni dokazano, da je omenjeni šolski sistem name-1 noma zapostavljal črnske šolarje ali šolarje, ki pripadajo drugim priznanim manjšinam. Volivci Kalifornije so bili odobrili ta zakon na državnih volitvah. Predmet spora v Kaliforniji je načrt ‘businga’ v Los Angelesu in nasprotniki businga trdijo, da ne bo odslej več nobenega prisilnega prevažanja šolarjev v tem mestu, ker ni dokazano, da je ta sistem res zapostavljal črnce in druge uradno priznane manjšine. V drugi zadevi so pa sodniki vrhovnega 'sodišča glasovali s pičlo večino 5:4, da je zakon v zvezni državi Washington protiustaven, ker je država po tem zakonu prikrajšala pravico lokalnih šolskih sistemov, da prostovoljno odobrijo sistem businga. Tak sistem businga imajo v Seattlu, volivci države Washington pa so na volitvah 1. 1978 skušali preprečiti tudi prostovoljne lokalne odločitve v prid businga. Takšno preprečevanje je protiustavno, pravi vrhovno sodišče ZDA, in torej je razveljavljena odločitev wa-shingtonskih volivcev. Opazovalci vrhovnega sodišča menijo, da sodniki še niso izdelali, povsem jasnega stališča do businga. Zaradi tega bodo morali na tem najvišjem prizivnem sodišču ZDA večkrat spregovoriti o tej kočljivi sporni zadevi. ------o------ 0 Zadnje vesti • New York, N.Y. — Sest hrvaških priseljencev, ki jih je porota tukajšnjega zveznega sodišča obsodila sodelovanja v terorističnih aktivnostih, je slišalo kazen, ki jo je izrekla sodnica Constance Baker Motley. Ante Ljubjas in Ranko Primorac bosta presedela 40 let, Mile Markič in Milan Bagarič 30 let, Drago WASHINGTON, D.C.; BEJRUT, Li. — Preteklo sredo zvečer je predsednik Ronald Reagan na svoji, po ZDA te-levizirani tiskovni konferenci, opravičil izraelski vojaški vdor v Libanon. Izraelci so napadli zato, ker je PLO kršila premirje med njo in Izraelom, ko je obstreljevala severne kraje Izraela z raketami. Reagan je poudaril, da ZDA niso vedele vnaprej, da bodo Izraelci prekoračili libanonsko mejo, da bodo prodrli celo do Bejruta. Predsednik je zanikal trditve PLO in več a-rabskih in drugih voditeljev, da so ZDA dale prosto roko Izraelu v tej zadevi. Mi smo bili prav tako presenečeni, ko smo slišali za vdor v Libanon, kot so bili presenečeni drugi, je rekel Reagan. Nismo želeli tega vojskovanja, želimo pa, da bi vsakršno streljanje prenehalo in da bi Libanon zapustile vse tuje čete, PLO, sirijske in izraelske, je pripomnil predsednik ZDA. Reagan je pa na tiskovni konferenci soglašal z dvema poglavitnima ciljema izraelske vlade Menahema Begina: Prvič, da PLO zapusti Libanon, in, drugič, da bi bila u-stanovljena v Libanonu močna, osrednja libanonska vlada, ki bi res imela oblast v svojih rokah. V Izraelu so namreč prepričani, da večina Libanoncev tudi ne mara PLO in želi samo mir. Izraelci vedno trdijo, da si nočejo prisvojiti niti ene pedi libanonskega ozemlja, niso pa več pripravljeni trpeti obstoja in delovanja PLO v tej deželi. Umik PLO Izraelci še vedno zahtevajo umik vseh oboroženih PLO skupin iz Bejruta in celo iz Libanona. Pogajanja pa so, kot kaže, na mrtvi točki. Voditelji PLO z Jasirjem Arafatom na čelu nočejo zapustiti f********** Sudar pa 20 let. Vinko Loga-rušič iz Mentorja, Ohio, je tudi dobil kazen 20 let ječe. Lani je bil Logarušič oproščen krivde v zaroti zoper Josepha Lašiča, lastnika Croatian Tavern na 3244 St. Clair Ave. Zarotniki naj bi bili hoteli ubiti Lašiča. Bejruta kljub temu, da bi našli varno zatočišče v drugih arabskih državah, kot so npr. Ubija, Sirija, Irak, Iran in celo Saudska Arabija. V teh državah, vedo PLO voditelji, da bi bili podrejeni politiki tamkajšnjih voditeljev. V Libanonu so imeli doslej proste roke, ker dejansko ni obstajala močna libanonska vlada. Jasir Arafat je baje dejal, da če bo moral izbrati med bivanjem v Siriji in smrtjo v Bejrutu, si bo izbral smrt v Bejrutu. Izraelci pa poudarjajo, da bodo začeli z napadom na Zahodni Bejrut, v katerem se nahaja do 8,000 o-boroženih PLO gverilcev, v najkrajšem času. V okolici Bejruta čakajo posebne, za poulično vojskovanje, izvež-bane čete izraelske vojske. -----------o------- Začetek pogajanj med ZDA in ZSSR o skupni razorožitvi obetajoč ŽENEVA, Svi. — V torek je bil prvi sestanek pogajalcev ZDA in ZSSR o skupni razorožitvi oz. omejevanju o-boroževalne tekme. Drugi sestanek bo že danes. Delegaciji sta se odločili, da se bosta sestajali dvakrat tedensko. Na začetku bodo ZDA seznanile ZSSR s podrobnostmi načrta, ki ga je bil pred tedni predlagal predsednik Ronald Reagan. Ker trajajo sestanki običajno okoli dve uri, bo to razlaganje vzelo morda cel mesec. Potem bodo Sovjeti začeli z razlaganjem načrta, predlaganega od Leonida L Brežnjeva. Šele potem se bodo začela pogajanja o možnem usklajevanju teh dveh načrtov. Kot kaže, je bilo vzdušje na prvem sestanku prijateljsko. Edward L. Rowny, ki vodi ameriško delegacijo, in Viktor P. Karpov, ki načelju-je sovjetski, sta stara znanca iz prejšnjih pogajanj. Stališči ZDA in ZSSR o o-mejevanju oboroževalne tek-: me se pa precej razlikujeta in zaradi tega ni pričakovati hitrega ali obsežnejšega napredovanja. Ob nedavni vladni zamenjavi v Beogradu ii. Ko ji je med čestitkami e-den od delegatov dejal: “Ali je novi zvezni izvršni svet tudi na političnem področju resnično pripravljen izpeljati tisto, kar je dogovorjeno in sposoben sprejeti tudi vse posledice,” je zavihala nos, kar se je lepo videlo na drugem zagrebškem TV programu. Gre za znano stvar. V Jugoslaviji ni nihče posamično odgovoren za svoje osebno ravnanje. Leta in leta se je govorilo le o kolektivni odgovornosti. Pri taki odgovornosti se pač vsak vodilni funkcionar zaveda, da ga bo nekdo ščitil, če bo naredil napako. V takem primeru bo partija poskrbela, da direktorja, ki je podjetje zapeljal v polom, premesti drugam, o-bičajno na boljše mesto. Na seji se pa pove, da so bili vsi krivi, če je do tega ali onega prišlo. Temu se reče “kolektivna odgovornost” in zadeva je hitro pri kraju. Vsi, ki za to vedo in kdo sploh je, ki tega ne bi vedel, se sprašujejo, ali bo tudi pod “železno gospo” ostalo vse po starem in če tudi v bodoče nikomur, četudi je to zaslužil, ne bodo skrivili lasu. Planinčeva je že predlagala, da se zapro vse pipe za dolgoročne naložbe. Tudi jugoslovanski proizvajalci ne razpolagajo več s eaiotnim dohod- kom, ki ga ustvarijo. Glavni del dohodka je treba prevesti v zvezni proračun. V državi že lep čas dinar ni več plačilno sredstvo, temveč tuje devize. Veliko surovin v jugoslovanskih tovarnah se sploh ne dobi za dinarje, ampak iih je treba in to znotraj države, torej ne v tujini, plačevati z dolarji in franki. Na zadnjem kongresu slovenske komunistične partije v Ljubljani se je o tem mnogo govorilo in poudarjalo, da je tako ravnanje proti ustavi. Ponoven dokaz, da so zakoni eno, realnost pa nekaj čisto drugega. Skratka: Planinčeva nima zavidanja vrednega položaja, čeprav so mnenja o njej de- ljena in pričakuje marsikdo od nove zvezne vlade več dejanj in manj besed. Novi zvezni izvršni svet je natrpan od ljudi z diplomami, nazivi strokovno sposobnostjo; seveda pa je zopet vprašanje, kje je kdo od njih in tudi kako je prejel tisto kvalifikacijo, ki jo predstavlja. Bližnji sodelavci, ki Planinčevo od blizu poznajo, pravijo, da je zelo dovzetna za nasvete in tudi rada posluša. Spet drugi pa trdijo, da je izredno samovoljna, nepristopna, da se velikokrat zapiči v nepomembne podrobnosti. Ob letu se bo izkazalo, kako je vodila krmilo Jugoslavije prva žena predsednik! K. G. Franc Kramberger odzval povabilu Slomškovih krožkov in se bo udeležil vseslovenskega romanja 3. in 4. julija v Lemontu, ki bo letos še posebej namenjeno pospešitvi Slomškovega procesa blaženim. Chicago in Cleveland sta najinočnejši slovenski naselbini v Združenih državah, čas škofovega obiska je zavoljo njegove prezaposlenosti omejen le na teden dni in se bo zato moral omejiti le na obisk teh dveh slovenskih naselbin, posebno še, ker bo drugi dan po prihodu v Chicago navzoč kot zastopnik slovenskih škofov pri škofovskem posvečenju rev. dr. E. Pevca v Clevelandu in se bo takoj vrnil v Lemont na romanje. ^ Na obisk h clevelandskim Slovencem pa bo mariborski -škof prišel v ponedeljek po romanju, čas prihoda na letališče še ni določen, stanoval bo v župnišču pri Sv. Vidu. V torek, 6. julija, bo ob 7. uri zvečer daroval pri Sv. Vidu slovesno sv. mašo, h kateri so prav lepo vabljeni vsi Slovenci iz Clevelanda in okolice in še posebno narodne noše, ki dajo vsaki slovesnosti pravi slovenski pečat. Slomškov krožek Rev. Alojzij Rupar zlatomašnik CLEVELAND, O. — Jutri, 3. julija, bo č. g. Alojzij Rupar, ki je več let vršil duhovniško službo kot kaplan na slovenskih farah v Clevelandu, nato pa trinajst let kot župnik med Slovenci v Lo-rainu, obhajal 50-letnico svojega mašniškega posvečenja. Zlato mašo bo č; g. jubilant opravil v Orange-u v Kaliforniji^ kjer se je naselil, ko je pred sedmimi leti nastopil svoj zasluženi pokoj. Te zlate maše se bo udeležila zlato-mašnikeva sestra ga. Štefka Modic s svojim možem Viktorjem, ki živita v Clevelandu. Č. g. Alojzij Rupar bo zlato mašo ponovil v nedeljo, 11. julija 1982, opoldne pri Mariji Vnebovzeti v Clevelandu, kjer je bil nekdaj kaplan. Zlatomašnik se je rodil v Ptuju v Sloveniji uglednima krščanskima zakoncema' kot šesti izmed petnajstih otrok. Poleg Alojzija so se posvetili Bogu kot duhovniki še trije njegovi bratje, dva kot redovna brata, ena sestra pa kot redovnica. Od bratov so že vsi odšli po svoje plačilo k Bogu, živi pa še pet zlato-mašnikovih sester. Po nekaj letih šolanja v Ptuju je Alojzij Rupar odšel v Ljubljano, kjer je obiskoval klasično gimnazijo kot goje- nec Dijaškega doma na Taboru, ustanove Misij onske družbe sv. Vincencija Pavlan-skega. Po maturi je stopil v semenišče kot član te družbe. V duhovnika ga je posvetil 3. julija 1932 pokojni ljubljanski knezoškof dr. Gregorij Rožman. Eno leto po posvetitvi je č. g. Alojzij Rupar odšel oznanjat in širit Kristusov nauk na Kitajsko. On in njegov sošolec č. g. France Jereb sta bila med prvimi člani slovenske province Misijonske družbe, ki so se odločili za delo med Kitajci. Ko se je državljanska voj-ra na Kitajskem bolj in bolj i' ila in skoraj onemogočila misijonsko delo, je č. g. Alojzij Rupar zapustil Kitajsko. Leta 1947 je prišel v Združene države in se naselil v Clevelandu. Več ,let je delal kot kaplan pri Mariji Vnebovzeti, pri Sv. Vidu in pri Sv. Kristini, nato pa, kot že omenjeno, 13 let kot župnik v Lorainu. Z ljubeznivostjo in požrtvovalnim delom si je pridobil spoštovanje in zaupanje številnih vernikov, pa navezal tudi prenekatere prijateljske stike. Zlatomašniku Alojziju Ruparju k visokemu jubileju iskrene čestitke, pa tudi, prisrčna hvala za vse njegove napore, za vea njegova prizadevanja in žrtve tekom njegovega duhovriiškega dela med nami! K večnemu počitku smo ga položili 23. junija iz cerkve Our Lady of the Mount v Ciceru na pokopališče Queen of Heaven v Hillside, 111. Pokojni je bil aktivni oficir Jugoslovanske kraljevske vojske, med vojno pa se je pridružil protikomunističnim borcem v Sloveniji, odkoder se je maja 1945. leta umaknil v Avstrijo, od tam je leta 1951 emigriral v ZDA. Na letošnjem programu bo prejel priznanje novi clevelandski pomožni škof A. Edward Pevecs ki bo posvečen v škofa danes popoldne v stolnici: sv. Janeza. Škof Pevec je prvi slovenski duhovnik iz širšega Clevelanda, ki je postal škof v stoletni zgodovini Slovencev v tem mestu. Na Slovenskem večeru bodo preko škofa Pevca priznani vsi duhovniki in redovnice, ki so tekom teh sto let in več tako veliko prispevali k slovenski skupnosti in njeni ohranitvi. Celoten program Slovenskega večera še ni docela izoblikovan, pozvani pa ste, da si zabeležite soboto, 23. oktobra 1982, kot poseben dan: Slovenski večer na čast priljubljenega škofa Pevca in vseh slovenskih duhovnikov in redovnic. Oba dni bo nastopil Slovenski folklorni inštitut Amerike s svojim DRUGIM FESTIVALOM SLOVENSKE FOLKLORE V AMERIKI. Poročali smo že, da bo na festivalu sodelovalo več kot 400 plesalcev in plesalk, glasbenikov in pevcev. Poleg članov Folklornega inštituta v Clevelandu bodo gostovale skupine iz Chicaga, Barberto-na, Toronta, Hamiltona, Londona, Fairport Harbor j a in samega Clevelanda. Lanski prvi festival je doživel neverjeten uspeh v vsakem oziru. Organizatorji zagotavljajo, da bo letošnji še boljši in privlačnejši in da Ko dosti novega tudi za tiste, ki so bili navzoči in navdušeni lani. Festival je posvečen slovensko-ameriški mladini. Loški rojaki smo ponosni nato staro gotsko romarsko cerkev, ko je bilo Brezje še popolnoma neznano. Izredno blagoglasni zvonovi v mogočnem stolpu so nas ob velikih cerkvenih praznikih privabili v trumah v Marijino svetišče. Cerkev je podružnica fare Stara Loka s sedežem loške dekanije. Vsakega obiskovalca, vernika ali turista preseneti ta razsežnost iz starih časov s prelepim zlatim oltarjem, z dragocenimi naj starejšimi kipi, in kakor ocenjujejo, so tudi orgle najstarejše na Slovenskem. Našim prednikom je ta božja pot v dobi 60Q let njenega obstoja morala veliko pomeniti. Današnji čas je cerkev sprejel v spomeniško varstvo, okoličani pa v oskrbo in popravilo; zob časa jo je pričel razjedati. “Crngrobsko cerkev moramo rešiti,” gre glas v njeni okolici od ust do ust že nekaj mesecev dolgo. Pozimi so delali načrte, spomladi so zagrabili za delo. Starološki župnik in dekan g. Glavan je nam, crngrobskim rojakom, takole pisal: “Začeli smo z obnovo zvonika. Dela sp'v polnem teku. Vso pomlad smo zbirali les in odziv je bil kar lep. Odločili smo se, da bomo “poru-štali” v lastni režiji: delno za plačilo, delno s prostovoljnim delom. Stroškov ne bi zmogli, če bi dali vso o,bnovo kakemu podjetju, že tako bo zelo veliko stalo, saj je bilo treba blagoslavlja, varuje in . ohranja zdravega, zadovoljnega vin veselega še mnogo let! ...... V- L.. zbrati skoraj 3,000 kg bakrene pločevine, ki je izredno draga in se težko dobi. Samo pločevina je vredna 100 milijonov dinarjev, kar je po u-radnem kurzu okoli 22,000 USA dolarjev. Vprašali boste, kako smo si upali lotiti se takega dela. Pač zaupamo v Marijino pomoč! Že takoj, ko smo zaceli z deli, je nekaj velikodušnih dobrotnikov dalo take prispevke, ki so mi. bili znamenje, da je v ljudeh velika ljubezen do crngrobske Marije in da Ona sama želi, da ne pustimo svetišča propadu, Prepričan sem, da bomo z veliko vztrajnostjo le uspeli. Krovci pridno delajo in zvonik se že sveti v novi obleki. Upam, da bo v juniju gotovo. Treba bo poravnati dolgove. Nekaj smo si sposodili. Delo bo seveda veliko stalo. Po 5 delavcev dela že skoraj dva meseca vsak dan od jutra do večerd, če je le lepo' vreme. Hvala Begu, da je tudi odziv pri ljudeh kar lep. Letos imamo poleg zvonika v načrtu tudi novo razsvetljavo v cerkvi. Že nekaj let nimamo nobene. Pred leti je udarila strela in uničila tisto, kar je bilo. Upam, da bomo dobili tudi nov “luster”. Načrtovali smo za letos obnovo zvoniko-ve fasade - zidu, pa bomo morali zaradi prevelikih stroškov preložiti na prihodnje leto. V majui smo imeli v Crn-■grobu vsako nedeljo popoldne šmarnice. Za praznik Binkošti je bil zelo velik o-bisk — okrog tisoč ljudi. Pri Mariji je bilo srečanje bolnikov, invalidov in ostarelih. Veliko romarsko slovesnost bomo imeli na Veliki Šmaren 15. avgusta, katero bo vodil škof dr. Lenič.” Prisrčno pozdravljam vse starološke rojake! Entitled “Edward Pevec, Cleveland’s First Bishop of Slovenian Descent”, the one hour show will be on Viacom cable systems (Euclid and all Heights areas) Channel 27, Sunday, July 11, from 3 till 4 p.m. and then on the west side’s CATV cable system (Parma and surrounding suburbs) Channel 24, July 18, from Noon till 1 p.m. The program is being sponsored by a number of Slovenian businesses and organizations. The new bishop has also consented to saying Mass during the E. 185th St. Festival on Saturday, August 7 at 6 p.m. on the grounds of the Slovene Home for the Aged on Neff Road. Delta Internalional Records is Phasing Out Probably the biggest producer of polka recordings since the early 1960’s, Delta International of Cleveland is liquidating its inventory of remaining LP’s and tapes. John Gayer, President, produced some of the best Cleveland artists including the Vad-nals, Kramer, Novak, Haller, and the late and great Johnny Pecon and nine album releases to name a few. His contributions were certainly a major factor in the increased popularity of Cleveland-Slo-venian polkas during the past two decades and Delta’s presence on the polka scene will be sorely missed. Today most artists are resorting to producing their own albums. Delta will be best remembered for its unique quality in record production. New releases currently include Bill Bevec’s “Polkas from the Past” (Warren, Ohio); The Zupanchick Brothers fifth release, “Polka Swing Country” (Johnstown, Pa.); and Dick Tady in a single of “Umpapa”, forrunner to a new album out of Pennsylvania. Death and Illness Take Toll in Polka Field The untimely death of 53 year old Ray Budzilek leaves ish will have the opportunity of welcoming home Bishop Edward Pevec, as well as his entire family which is gathering from as far off as California for this occasion. St. Vitus Parish has witnessed many fine days in its long history, but this will be very special, indeed. For this reason, the Committee of parishioners preparing for Bishop Pevec’s return, in the name of the entire parish, wish to extend a warm invitation to all Slovenians in the Cleveland area, to; join them on July 4th in welcoming home one of their own. The Bishop is from St. Vitus Parish, but in the duty of the Polish polka community of greater Parma shocked by his sudden departure. Budzilek, who was an honoree in the Polka Hall of Fame, recorded on several major labels including Capitol, played his last job on the weekend preceeding his death. He was without a doubt the best known Polish performer in our area. Meanwhile musician Georgie Cook, a banjo player and former bandleader from Euclid, is coming along nicely following a slight stroke. That is really what the Slovene Folklore Institute, which is organizing this festival, is 'all about. From its very inception. its dancers have been rapidly conquering the heart’s of Slovenian and general public alike. Today it is considered as the most vibrant, dynamic and colorful ethnic folkdancing in greater Cleveland. The group was founded by Mrs. Eda Vovk Push who displays a unique combination of strong leadership and a variety of artistic skills. Her choreography is most fascinating and diverse representation of the beautiful treasures of the Slovenian folklore heritage. She sets very high standards of quality and demands discipline. The young dancers perform with exuberance and precision. Everyone on stage reflects the work of this artistic leadership. The haloed Paschal lamb supporting a gold cross-staff flying therefrom a silver banner with a red cross, signifies priesthood, sacrifice, and the Eucharist, and summarizes in symbolic form the Bishop's years spent in priestly formation in the context of Borromeo Seminary. The red quarters of the shield happily honor bishop Pilla, ninth Bishop of Cleveland, and senior consecrator of Bishop Pevec, while the blue quarters honor Bishop Issenmann, seventh Bishop of Cleveland, on whose fiftieth anniversary of ordination. Bishop Pevec received the fullness of the priesthood. In the “chief" or upper portion of the shield, are two martlets (heraldic birds) from the traditional Arms of Saint Edward, the Confessor, his baptismal Patron. In the base of the shield is a golden lyre, symbol of harmony, and here refers to the name Pevec, which translated from Slovenian means singer, or poet. The lyre also obliquely refers to the Bishop's motto taken from the Letter to the Hebrews 10:7 1 COME TO DO YOUR WILL; by doing God’s Will, one lives in harmony with God. t , Behind the Arms is placed a gold processional cross (charged with a blue stone in honor of our Blessed Mother) and ensigning the whole achievement is a pontifical hat with its six tassels on each side, disposed in three rows, all in green. These are the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of Bishop ir accordance with the Instruction of the Holy See, dated 31st. March, 1969. Before 1879, the pontifical hat was worn at solemn cavalcades held in conjunction with papal ceremonies. The color of the hat and the number of tassels were signs of the rank of the prelate, a custom still preserved in ecclesiastical heraldry. Peace, Rose —------ Roy Sankovič Takes Pride In Remodeled Funeral Home Holmes Slovenian Pension Clul) By JOHN NEMEC When Roy Sankovič bought the Stanley H. Johnston Funeral Home in Collinwood two years ago, he became the youngest man in Ohio history to own a funeral homer^' Today, the Sankovič-Johnston Funeral Home is taking on a whole new appearance and atmosphere in an extensive remodeling project that will make it, “Bigger, brighter and better,” while enriching its Victorian style. The Johnstons originally Roy Sankovič opened business on the site in 1923. In 1929, the present building was constructed. At the time, it was the first actual funeral home in Ohio. Although only 24 when he took over the traditipn, Sankovič already had a considerable amount of experience behind him. He had worked for 10 years at Grdina’s Funeral Home, starting at the age of 14. After graduating from St. Mary’s elementary and St. Joseph High School, he attended John Carroll University and Lakeland Community College, taking psychology, business and science courses, always gearing his studies toward a fu- neral profession. He explains that, working for Grdina’s over the years, “I saw how useful I could be to the family in their time of need.” After completing his undergraduate studies, he was accepted at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, the nation’s most respected institute within the funeral profession. Graduating in 1978, Sankovič returned to Cleveland to serve his apprenticeship. He received both his Embalm- n ers and Funeral Director’s Licenses in November, 1979.^ “The opportunity came to buy a place in the neighborhood where I lived and grew up in, with my church just down the street, and with the same people I’ve known all my life. I decided to invest back into the neighborhood. ~ That’s why I’m doing the remodeling — to ensure that I stay in the neighborhood.” Another reason Sankovič gave for choosing the site is tha:t his living quarters are in the same building as the funeral home. This way he is available for service 24 hours a day. The present remodeling includes: expanding the main chapel to twice its size; expanding the hallway; enlarging the smaller chapel; renovating and enlarging the smoking and coffee room; installing new carpeting thru-out the first floor; installing a restroom for invalids; enlarging the parking lot; and installing new lighting indoor and out. She is survived by her son, Ralph Madison of Michigan and her daughter, Mrs. Otto (Dorothy) Washington. She was the grandmother of five. She was the sister of Maria Ternar of Yugoslavia, and Matthew Balazek (dec.). She was an employee of Fisher Fazio and worked for them for 30 years. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Lodge 224, KSKJ. Funeral Mass was Wednesday, June 30 at St. Paul’s Church (E. 40. St.), at 9:30 a.m. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. She was the beloved wife of the late Anton Krall, dear mother of Anthony, Mother-in-law of Margene, grandmother of Jennifer Jo Greco, all« of Minerva, Ohio. Josephine was a member of St. Clair Pensioners, KSKJ Lodge 162, Progressive Women of America and SN-PJ No. 5 Neprej. Services were held Thurs., at 9:30 a.m. at the Zak Funeral Home, 6016 St. Clair Ave. Funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. at St. Vitus Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Holmes Avenue Slovenian Pensioner Club was organized in the spring of 1962. Consisting of ten Charter Members, Tony Škapin Was elected first president. At that time orlly men were admitted. The first Dinner Dance of this club was held in the fall of 1962. They had to hire women to prepare the meals. The club realized that they could not get along without women and vice-versa, so they decided to Hake in women. John Habat served as second president of the club. The present membership of this club is limited to 300 members. Some 39 members are 80 years of age and over, and do not have to pay any dues. The majority of them still contribute the dues to the club treasury. There is a Waiting list for new members. Admitted are only persons who are not members of any other Slovenian Pensioner Club. So ordered by the Club. A well knit club, like a family group. Our meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month, refreshments are served following the meeting. Joe Ferra is presently president of this club. Meetings are short and snappy. This club is affiliated with the Federation of Slovenian Pensioners Clubs, which include Barberton, Euclid, Girard, Maple Hts., St. Clair, and Waterloo. Our annual Christmas Dinner for members is held in December. Family style food, and refreshments too. Plus dancing, music by Krivec Orchestra. She w^ould have attained age 94 on July 17, 1982. Our dear one was born in Zdenska Vas, Dobrepolje, Slovenia, July 17, 1888, and emigrated to America in Nov. 1913. She was a longtime member of St. Ann’s Lodge No. 4, A.M.L.A. (S.D.Z.). Funeral services were held on May 17. 1982 from A. Grdina, St. Clair Chapel, with a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:09 a.m. in St. Vitus Church, and Calvary Cemetery, Our heartfelt thanks are extended to Rev. Joseph Simcic who celebrated the Mass, led the recitation of the rosary at the funeral home, and for his gravesitc prayers at the cemetery. We are also grateful to Rev. Joseph Boznar, for his many visits to the hospital. Many thanks to Dan Postotnik, a Lay Minister at St. Vitus, for bringing the Eucharist to our beloved on First Fridays-the last few years. Since the Mladi Harmonikarja held the first benefit picnic for the MZA some fifteen years ago, these picnics have continued annually as ■xrTxxxxxxxxrxxxixxxxxm Studies of Slovenes Making Big Strides The American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) will hold their annual Convention in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 14 through 17, 1982. The Society for Slovene Studies (SSS) will have two sections at the Convention, Topics In Slovene Studies and the Slovenes of Friuli-Ven-ezia Giulia. The first section will feature such presentations as “The Slovene Immigrant and His Stay-at-Home Counterpart (A Case History)” by John P. Nielsen (New York U.); “Semiotics and Slovene Ethnic Studies in Cleveland”, by Irene Portis Winner (Brown U.); “Folklore of an Area along the Kolpa (Kupa) River”, by Joseph L. Conrad (Kansas U.); and “Accento-logical Classes in Slovene”, by Lew R. Micklesen (U. of Washington). This section will be chaired by Joseph Velikonja of the U. of Washington. The second section on the Slovenes of Friuli-Venezia Giulia will be chaired by James C. Davis of the U. of Pennsylvania, and features several papers on the Slovenes of Trieste as seen from historical and sociological perspectives. Discussions will be led the major fundraising event for the Mission Aid in Cleveland. Sunday Mass on the day of the picnic at Pristava will be celebrated in Slovenian at 12:30 by the Rev. Charles Wol-bang, C.M., spiritual director of MZA, who will come in from Toronto. There will be continual activity throughout the afternoon and evening. Lively music for dancing will be provided by the ensemble “Triglav,” an excellent group of talented young musicians. There will be a drawing with cash and other prizes. Of course, dinner and refreshments will be available, and the swimming pool will be open. The organizers of this event emphasize that the picnic is open to all of our Slovenians. As always, an invitation is extended to members of every Slovenian club and organization to come together and make it as successful as possible.
