S tem ni reče-10, 4a bom zadel stoodstotno v »ravo. Dotaknil se b^m naj prvo vpra-anja "20 year endowmenta" in use mladine. Dne 15. febr. priredi gospodinjski odsek društva 89 SNPJ svoio veselico. Gotov sem, da bo dobra postrežba in ste vabljeni na Midway vsi od blizu in daleč. Dne 2. marca pa gremo na Imperial, kjer naš mladinski krožek 22 SNPJ uprizori lepo igro. Začetek ob 2. popoldne v dvorani društva Prostost 106. John Sire. Vsi darovi bodo objavljeni v Prosveti. Vam se že vnaprej zahvaljujemo za pomoč. . Vprašal sem enega teh, kaj misli o—"paglavcu". ' Key ton Erznosnik, 81. Igra v Pittnburghu Pittahurgh. Zanimive nove knjige Ameriška politična in socialna literatur» ' zadnje čase plodovita kot ni bila še nikdar N ve knjige o vprašanjih dneva kar dežujejo £ občinstvo. * * Danes omenjamo le nekaj amersikih kniia ki so silno zanimive zaradi tega, ker nudit nova — razočaranja za one, ki radi sanjajo CS nova odpiranja oči onim, ki so še vedno mes. I talno slepi. Znani radikalni pisatelj Ernest Hemmint way je bil leta velik "fellow-traveller." Najnovejša knjiga te vrste je izšla zadnje dni v New Yorku pod naslovom "Out of tlu Night" in pisatelj je Jan Valtin. Hitlerjevci so dobili njega in njegovo ie-no v svoje pesti. Sveta inkvizicija in setigsnj« čarovnic je bilo strašno poglavje v zgodovini ampak boljševiške in fašistične "revolucije" ' današnji dobi so stokrat večja sramota. * | In do splošnega spoznanja te kardinal ne k»** mote so zelo pripomogli zgoraj omenjeni vedanci", ki so pogumno in energično razkril kali to nečloveško početje. PROSVETA ENGLISH SECTION Fifteenth Annivereary of SNPJ English Spooking Lodges PAGE 8IX For Members of Slovene National Benefit Society and American Slovenes WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 5 Our Society's Sports Activities The SNPJ ¿h ever on the alert for new fraternal features as well as for new social, cultural and recreational trends. This has often been demonstrated by our Society's leadership in originating new ideas and by incorporating them within its framework of permanent institutions which today are its valuable asset*. . With the organization of our young people in their own separate English speaking branches, the Society was quick in recognizing the value of sports activities among our young members. Thus we see that from the V6ry start of our youth movement fifteen years ago, sports has been adopted as an integral part of our Society's manifold endeavors. Today our Society is the promoter of several sports activities, notably baseball (softball), bowling, basketball and lawn bowling (baliria). Softball is the most popular outdoor sports activity and bowling is by far the favorite indoor recreation of the greatest number of our male and female members. Nearly every ESL of the SNPJ is now engaged in regular weekly bowling contests. And rightly so, for in recent years bowling alleys, once considered on the same social plane as a pool room, have become respectable, modem places of healthful recreation. It is interesting to know that recently discovered data show bowling as being 5,200 years old! From its research the American Bowling Congress had placed the age of bowling at around 2,000, believing it originated with the Romans. However, it has recently been discovered that the game dates much farther back. Prof. Flinder Petrie, famous Egyptologist, states in his book, "The Making of Egypt", that bowliiig was played as far back as 5200 B. C. Of course, the game then was somewhat different: on a small level surface with nine pins arranged in a diamond pattern. The ball was rolled through a small arch which probably was set up as a substitute for a foul line. , As stated above, our ESL's have been active in bowling since their beginning. Regular annual tournaments are staged at different cities. The annual Western Pennsylvania Bowling (duckpin) tournament opens the bowling neaaon on New Year's Day. Then there are several sectional tournaments; the Midwest in the Chicago area, the Eastern in Cleveland, and the Handicap tournament in Chicago. Quite logically, the annual National SNPJ Bowling tournament is held each year at the end of the bowling season either late in April or early in May. This year's tourney will take place in Detroit on May 3 and 4. It is a known fact that our Society is promoting sports and backing them financially for recreational value they offer to our members and for the purpose of attracting new members. The latter purpose should this year be especially empha-Kiaed because of the Fifteenth Anniversary of our ESL's. J. Z. Jrs. Bright Spots Badgerland News MILWAUKEE. WIS. —"Prosperity It returning or has returned" if e common »eying 0/ late. It has put ibis writer io wondering ee to tbe benefits that our lodge and Ita members have received through it. Financially, our members are doubtlessly becoming more secure, but from auch benefits aa wholesome company and everything derived therefrom, they are beginning to fade. In oUjner words, prosperity haa given work in extra hours to our members, and because of this .they have become less attenUve to the lodge and ita affairs. The comparative attendance of our last few moating« with other comparable meetings has shown a definite loss of attendance and lack of inter/-eat. If all the numbers of our lodge wili only look back at those sioatings of a year back, I am sere we will not have such small attendance in tha future. They will be losing too much of what should be a part of them. Detroit Circle .. t nr Shows Progress DEARBORN,MICH.—For the 8NPJ spotlight thia month, we muat report on the fine progress made by the Juvenile Spirits Circle of Detroit, which meets the^last Sunday of each month at the^VSND on John R. at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. At the second regular Circle meeting held Jan. 26, we had 23 new members present, compared to 12 members who were preaent at the initial meeting on Dec. 29. You can readily see the increase of membership and attendance. We are rapidly progressing, growing by leaps and bounds, and we are determined to make our Circle one of the most active in the) near future. President Dorothy Plesh called the meeting to order and many plans were brought up and diacuased, with everyone giving his opinion. Entertainment, publicity, icrapbook and photograph committees were elected. Edbin Spendsl is cUairman of the entertainment committee. Tony Plazar was elected aa agt^at-arms and Richard Volk his assistant. It was decided to pay 6c dues per month to build up their treasury. Also, they agreed to pay five cents into the treaiury each month if they are absent plus the regular dues. A skating party was decided upon for Feb. 1. Letters from circles in (Strabane and W. Va. were read, alio a letter from Pres. Cslnksr. We hsve fine tslent in Martha Ann Werholts, Ber-1 nice Obed, Ellen Spendal and many others. The meeting adjourned with singing several songs. Refre:4hments were served and dancing followed. More and' better good times are in store for our members. Plan to attend each meeting. , Our juveniles have the qualities which make for good leaderahip: loyalty, courage, aggressiveness, at\d sincerity. The writer haa been appolntgd by the Detroit Federation aa manager of the group. Sia^ K. Junko and Sia. J. Bogatay were also present. In behalf of the Circle and myself, 1 wish to lake this opportunity to tiASfik Sia. Ann Werholts for making J.he cake to serve along with our refreahments. Here's a suggestion to all members of our circles sjm^^o ali managers: W|hy not plan to hold a National Circle Jamboree for managers and one or two representatives of each circle? Some celebration qf thia sort should be held sa it would be advantageous to our Society and circles. Please aend your opinions concerning thia suggeation to the'Writer. After all suggeations are inathop' will be forwarded to Pres. Calnkar to choose one of the beat possible. The beat of luck to all Uhe juvenile circles, especially to the newly organised Circle 30 of Blaine, O. OLGA MARIE KNAPICH, Manager, 22266 Garrison, Dearborn, Mich. Spirit-o-Grams By Whoozit ST. LOUIS, MO.—The Spirits are from Missouri ao they must be shown. Well, the captains of the bowling teams have shown'¿he membership at large that by their diligence they have signed up sixteen bowlers. Bowling takes place at the Arway Alleys, Arsenal street at Kingshighway blvd. at 9 o'clock each Wednesday nite. Visitors and rooters are welcome. The captains to whom we owe many thanks are Odella Markoff, our Financial Secretary, and Albert Kacin. If any one desires to join they may do ao by getting in touch with either of the eaptains. / Membership Campaign is still in progress. We still have a week before meeting nlgwt. (Suppose you get in touch with your prospect before the meeting. New members are most welcome. A new juvenile member will be proposed at the coming meeting, a valentine gift to the Spirits. Our meeting is on Feb. 14th, you know. If Sister Baumgarth proposes her big little girl at our next meeting, our valentine may be twins. How about making it valentine triplets or perhaps quins? Sorry to hear about John Spiller's misfortune. John went to his place of employment parking his car in hia usual parking spot at the foot of a hill. During the day a heSvy truck which was parked at the top of the hill began to roll and it gained momentum on its run down hill. By the time it hit Spiller'a car it was going so fast that it completely wrecked the car. Fortunately no one was in the car when the accident occurred. We are glad to hear thai Rose Lon-caric, Odella Markoff, and Mary Rho-dus have recovered from their recent illneas. Our aincere thanks to the super ticket sellers Tony Petrovic Sr., who sold 63 tickets; Ben Ducote 31, Stanley Harvatin 20, and to the reat of the ticket sellers. Whoozit was informed that Mary Bursich has recently announced 'her engagement. A lot of luck. He is not only her prospective husband but a prospective member as well. CLIEVELAND.—A week ago Sunday coming home late in the evening the wife stopped me at the doorway and remarked, '«She's gone." She referred, of course, to Sis. Milly Tomsic, a member of the Comrade lodge slmost since its inception. A victim or T. B. stricken a few years ago, her cheery attitude held hope for recovery. It waa difflcalt to realize «he passed away. Milly was very well liked by everyone and to her family in their hour ofbe-reavement we extend most heartfelt sympathy. How best her absence will be felt by al< her friends is aptly expressed by James Whitoomb Riley's poem, "She Is Just Away": »1 You cannot say, you muat not say That she is dead. She is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand She has wandered into an unknown land. * And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since she lingers there; So think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here. ! Think of her still aa the same, and say She is not dead, she la just away. Marie Stefancic, our new Secretary, is going to check up on the number of CoVnrde felt, s.gns still outstanding from the W|aukegan affair. We are going to require these for the boys' teams in the March tournament as well as the Detroit affair in May. This writer recalls that when tha new plans of Insurance were first in troduced into our Society, Bro. Loui« V. Kumer made a thorough study of them and elaborated upon them at a meeting of Comets Lodge 716 and a regular meeting of the E. 8. Federation of SNPJ lodges of Western Pennsylvania. They were interesting and informative lectures, and could have served a definite and useful purpose for our lodges had bhu listeners been furnished with supplementary printed or mimeographed copies for reference later. The idea expressed is a good one and can be made a practical phase of Society activity. Both Bro. Lotrich and Bro. Petrovich are members of the Supreme Finance Committee, a committee of great responaibility, and they are in position to introduce a plant, of instruction at the next Supreme Board meeting. It should be adopted, for It can be recalled that about a year ago grave Concern was expressed at a Supreme Board moating over this very thing—tihe inability of our members to cope with the highly trained private Insurance representativa. Actions speak louder than words, so let's gat going on the suggestion. For the convenience af the pro-ponen Is, it might be sugge«t«d that if a summer school where all secretaries would assemble for a few days would be prohibitive beaausa ef cost, tha adoption of a uniform training course could be usad in various sections of our Society. A course of Instruation could be promoted for the lodges in and around Johnstown, for the Western Pennsylvania lodges, for the Cleveland lodgee, ate. This would reduce the traveling expanses of the secretarias, and the only other cost would be that ef providing the matarla I and sending an able Society representativa to take charge of tha courses. ^ _ It was iatereetlng to read that Beanie S.
