It’s too cold in Northern Minnesota to plan any outdoor activities now although some regions of our country may be gardening already. We should heed the advice of English naturalist, Edythe Soper who states, “Early gardens arc planted on the pray-as-you-sow plan.” For years much has been written about our Slovenian heritage and the necessity for our branch membership to recruit new members, especially the young. Apparently it has fallen on deaf ears and one wonders what the future will hold if we continue to be complacent. This is a real concern which needs to be addressed. Our elderly members are passing away and very few branches take the initiative to replace or increase membership. We can be grateful for the Lenten Season which gives us moments to ponder in silent prayer. We need not feel abandoned and can turn with confidence for -EASTER - -NEW HOPE! help in solving our problems no matter how difficult they may be. While cleaning out my files, I came across this article written by Fr. James Keller, founder of the Christophers, titled, "WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS IS" ...more to inspire others with confidence, and fewer to discourage any initiative in the right direction. ...more to get into the thick of things, fewer to sit on the sidelines merely finding fault. ...more to point out what’s right with the world, and lewer to keep harping on what’s wrong with it. ...more who are interested in lighting candles, and fewer who blow them out. May the peace and joy of the Risen Christ abide with you today and every day! HAPPY EASTER! Victoria “Tory” Bobence in Louine memory of tu/o pioheer su/u officers ETERNAL PEACE! This was typical of the yearly banquet and Angela Godec, reporter for ZARJA, relates: "We had a wonderful time, many thanks to Barbara Brennan and Emily Mainer who worked very hard to make it a success. Two new members who joined our happy group are: Pauline Polyner and Angeline Zbashnik. Welcome to the fold, girls!" An article appeared in the local newspaper on Jan. 5, 1950 and excerpts from the article are as follows: This picture taken around 1942 shows the officers of the SWU and the Dawn Club. LEGENDARY AND TRADITIONAL SLOVENIAN EASTER CUSTOM (by Draga Gelt in “The Slovenians from the Earliest Times") Bela Krajina has a DRENEK or MOŠKI ŽEGEN, made mainly of cornel tree sticks, hazelwood, willow, palm branches andjuniper-bush, with some walnuts and apples. Slovenska Istra uses only palm branches, specially that with a fruit, named PALME or PASINE, decorated with curved roosters PETEH, made of the soft inside of fig tree wood, and a small religious picture or gilded palm branches. Ljubljana and surrounding villages use BUTARICA which is made of hazelwood twigs, a juniper-bush at the top and decorated with circles of coloured chippings of wood. In some areas small crosses are made of the Palm Sunday greenery after the blessing, and put on the fields, parts of the house or behind the picture of Saints. The days before Easter Sunday are spent partly on field work and tidying around the house, but after Wednesday there is only baking and other preparations for celebration of Easter. Young boys prepare the tree fungus for the blessed fire, which is taken from house to house the Saturday morning before Easter Sunday. On Thursday evening, the church bells toll for the last time and the RAGLJA - a rattle, takes over. In the side chapels of almost every church was a “god's grave” which wav decorated with flowers and bright lights. Good Friday brought, apart from the restrictions on work and food, the predictions: if it rained, it meant a bad year for harvest. Easter Sunday started with early Mass and a procession with many banners, happy singing and praying, then the VELIKONOČNI ŽEGEN - specially selected and prepared foods - were eaten. In most regions KOLAČ or POTICA, meat, mainly ham, Easter eggs, named PISANICE and horseradish (root) are included in the ZEGEN, each type of food having its own meaning. Potica - walnut roll (or sometimes bread), represents the crown Jesus was given, the meat, His body, the root of horseradish the nails with which He was nailed to the cross and Easter eggs, the resurrection. The foods are taken into the church on Easter Saturday for the blessing, or to the ‘Znamenje' - small chapels on crossroads, which priests visited. The foods are placed in special baskets and carried on the head, covered with a white lace cloth decorated, especially in Gorenjska, with flowers. Easter was a family celebration, so on Easter Monday people visited neighbors and relatives after attending Mass. Many games were played such as the game called PIRHE SEKAT (chopping of Easter eggs), (a type of bowling with Easter eggs) and TURČANJE (hitting the eggs while they roll on grass). In the Kropa district a large picnic was held at which games were played all the afternoon, and in Bela Krajina, the dance such as MOST (bridge), KURJI BOJ (rooster’s fight) and TURN (the tower) were popular. n Slovenia, all regions particularly prepare for Palm Sunday. The children’s role is to take a special bundle of greenery to the church. In Prekmurje it is named PRE-SMEC, PUŠELJ or ŠOP, and is made of different types of wood. When brought home, it is carried around, inside and outside, over the fields and parts are left on the roofs, above the main door and in store-rooms; some is stored for ‘bad' times, such as illness or storms. In Štajerska the greenery is named VEJNIK, PEGELJ, ŽEGEN, BUTARA, PUŠEIJC or PRESMEC and is made of hazelwood sticks, decorated with ribbon, flowers and sometimes oranges and apples. In Koroška it is known as the SNOP, PRESTO or CVETNIK, and is sometimes very long, but has to be very thin. It is taken to the church by two or four men, is bound with hoops of a willow tree and decorated at the top wtih a small cross of willow. Sometimes the SNOP is too long to be brought into church, so it is left by the door and is carried in the procession. The children and men hurry home, because being home first with the SNOP means good harvest and fortune for the home. Gorenjska knows the bundle of greenery as BEGAN IC A, HEBANCA or PRAJTL. Sometimes BE-GANICA is made of seven to nine types of wood and decorated with apples. Sometimes a small branch of OLJKA (palm tree) or a cross is added at the top. Dolenjska has the LESENI ŽEGEN or ŽEGEN, which is made of at least 25-year-old hazelwood sticks covered with ivy, and the white band at the bottom has a bunch of red heather (sometimes Gorenjska also used heather, if it is in flower), at the top is OLJKA - palm branch. Palm Sunday procession in Slovenian national costumes is a tradition at St. Vitus Church in Cleveland, Ohio with many “butarice" carried as this one by Nicole Borštnik, 5 years ago when she was 10. ACTIVITIES NO. 2, CHICAGO, IL Mother Nature was not very good to the midwest for our February meeting; our area was hit with an ice storm and many members could not get to St. Stephen’s, however, the 36 members who made it had an enjoyable evening. Ray had the hall decorated in hearts and flowers; Josie and Helen made cute little Valentine candy cups. We celebrated St. Valentine’s Day and also a Happy Birthday for our Recording Secretary, Jean Hrastar. She was dressed in a beautiful red sequin hat and blouse (which was made for her by her daughter and sister-in-law) and a long, slinky, black skirt. She was all set for Cupid! Love, DAISY NO. 3, PUEBLO, CO Twenty members were present at our meeting February 4 and enjoyed refreshments served by hostesses Agnes Cvar, Vera Denny and Mary (Mitzi) Drobnick. Mary Tekavec, President, opened the meeting with prayers and then called for reports of Secretary Angela Meglen and Treasurer Frances Simonich which were approved. Lillian Germ, Mary Kochevar and Joe Ondovchik, Frances Ondovchik’s husband, were reproted on the sick list. We wish them a speedy recovery and any others who are ill. A discussion was held on arrears in dues by members. It is hoped an effort will be made by them to bring dues up to date because we cannot carry them indefinitely and we also need to remind those who mail their dues in to enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. The mystery gift was donated by Helen Galich and won by Frances Simonich. “B” was played and enjoyed by all after the meeting. On a sad note, we lost a long-time member, Jennie Lukanic, who passed away February 7. Dominik Zakraysek passed away February 3. We extend our condolences to the families. Our next meeting will be at 1:00 p.m. April 3. Plan to come if at all possible. Happy Easter to all! PAULINE PAUCHICK NO. 5, INDIANAPOLIS, IN Hello to all from Texas! Mark Your Calendars for May 13 ’93 This is the date for our May business and social meeting. The meeting will take place at the Slovenian National Home at 11:00 a.m. We ask that you bring a covered dish and we will provide the meat. This should give you plenty of notice so that you can decide which of your favorite dishes to bring. But, do not let the question of which covered dish to bring keep you from coming to the meeting! We would love to see you all! We will be honoring our “Members of the Year” as well as our 50 year members. We have three recipients for each honor this year. Please plan to attend to help celebrate these special awards. We are having a raffle at our May meeting to help raise fund for our branch. Mary Fon has donated an af-ghan and Tillie Kampovsky has donated a hand painted ginger jar. My mother said that both are very beautiful. You should have received your booklets in the mail by now. Please either purchase or sell them and return the money to Mary Frances Mohr on or before May 13. If you woud like any extra, call Mary Frances at 852-8305; she will be happy to send you more. Sophie Turk has the latest “Pots & Pans” cookbooks for sale. If you would like to purchase one for yourself or someone in your family, please contact Sophie at 247-1015. I recently received a call from Mary Urbančič. She has lived in Texas since 1945. Mary was in a car accident last year and had several broken bones, but is doing better now. She had read one of my articles, looked under Mohr in the phone book, took a chance and there I was, at the other end of the telephone! Mary started a Pan-Slavic organization here in Dallas about 10 years ago. 1 attended my first meeting in February as Mary’s guest and wore my “flashing" Slovenian flag pin. Everyone loved my pin and was curious as to where my family was from in Slovenia. They served dinner, held their meeting, and had a guest speaker. I told Mary I especially appreciated the home cooked meal. We had stuffed cabbage rolls and they were delicious. Most of the members 1 met seemed to have Slovenian roots and I hope to be able to attend the meetings again. We have had several members sick and in the hospital lately. From the family and friends of Mary Hahe.... “Happy Easter”.. All is going well with Branch 6. Am still looking for two members: Margaret Pernell and Frances Smrdel. Mary Okolish lost her husband of 50 years last year, but she writes that she is doing fine. Our other social member, Mary Kovacic is trying to visit all in the nursing homes in the Barberton area. Mary Obreza has had several strokes, eye surgery, and is a bit under the weather. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Would love to hear from all. Wishing you a Holy Easter... Vesele Velikonočne praznike! LINDA LAMBRIGHT NO. 12, MILWAUKEE, WI With a cold day our attendance was down to 25 people. We enjoyed homemade soup and sandwiches made by our able cook, Phylis Pruschick. Of course, we had the desserts and homemade potica from one of the birthday girls, Kate Osep. And, our candy treat was from Agnes Morrow (she had a store years ago and we get treated by her concoctions often). Rose Larek brought her delicious baked cheese cake. So, thank you to all for your donations; we are fortunate in having such good members, willing to help, willing to donate. And, a big thank you to Ann Paulin and Rose Leubke who help clean up every month. Our meeting was short. We discussed our Usinger’s Sausage Luncheon. It will be held the same as our other luncheon. Members are asked to bring prizes and door prizes. Usinger’s lumishes the sausage and members bring salads and desserts. We have a few ailing members. Ann Grambow spent some time in the hospital, we all hope for a speedy recovery for all our ailing members. Alma Hoelzer can’t seem to shake off the flu bug. Ursula Ruppe has changed her address from St. Jude’s to Hillcrest Nursing Home, 1467 So. 75th St., West Allis 53214. Cards and visits are always welcome. On Feb. 21st we lost a dear and dedicated member, Mary Starich. Mary and her husband, Tony were always there to help at our State Conventions. Mary and Tony would come in early to set up the hall and helped clean it after everybody was gone. With Mary’s limited eyesight, that did not stop her and she was at every meeting, pitching in where needed. She will be greatly missed. Our sympathy to the family. May she rest in peace. Tony, we still want you to be with us as an auxiliary member - so do come to our affairs! After the last meeting we played our famous game. May our merciful Lord guide our loved ones into the safety of His arms. Another reminder to make your dues payments if you haven’t done so as yet. Wishing you and yours a Blessed Easter! ALICE KUHAR NO. 20, JOLIET, IL Can you believe it’s April already and Easter is upon us? Seems like we just celebrated Christmas. A lot has happened in the lives of branch members since I last wrote. A questionnaire was mailed out to all our branch members asking for their input on various subjects concerning the future of the Union. Of the questionnaires returned, the vast majority mentioned they’d like to get more involved. The best way to do this is to come to the meetings. They’re once a month with summer off for good behavior. We’d love to see and hear from you. Also, if anything of interest is happening in your life or the life of someone you know in our branch, please let me know and I’ll include it in my monthly report. I’d love to hear from you. We all would. After all, the S.W.U. is nothing without its members. Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, don’t forget about our membership drive to honor our 65th anniversary. We need 65 new members. Convention will be here before you know it, and who knows? You just might win the Pheasant Run GetAway. At this time, we’d like to acknowledge two of our Jr. members for maintaining an Honor level in academics. Good job and keep up the fine work to: Jr. member Dean Gudac of Hufford Jr. High and Kathleen Hrubos of St. Joseph’s in Joliet. Another Jr. member deserving recognition is Jr. member Jill DeJule, who danced in the annual Kiwanis Show. Although, I missed her performance, I’m told she did a beautiful job. Helen Sebastiani, secretary, Toni Legris, treasurer, and Emma Lustig, reporter, retain their offices, while Mollie Starasinich, Elizabeth Kinder and Gabrielle Lustig, trustees, aim to cast a wary eye on the money-changers! All of us are deeply grateful to Margaret Planton for her years of service as president; she did a great job! And to the new officers, our cooperation. The good news from Indianapolis is that Rose Barothy is doing okay but Mary Anne writes that her brother Charles is very ill. Our prayers for healing go heavenward for him and for all the sick among us. We appreciate hearing so faithfully from Mary Anne and for her generous gift over and above her dues. Our Christmas gifts were acknowledged with many thanks by the Dominican Sisters in Bradley and United Development Services, and “za podporo” by Ann Richards (helped you to overcome the flu, didn’t it, Ann?). Barbara Rittmanic fashioned a big party for her dad’s 88th birthday on February 20, and on the 26th her parents, Mary and Leo, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, beginning both days with Mass. No. 22: event in the small town of Momence, 1L- the closing of Jensen’s Rexall Drug Store, after 132 years of service and only six owners. What’s so special about this store? Well, representatives from the Smithsonian Institute found something! They camc and toted away all the goodies they wanted, including old, old Rexall drug products for display in Washington, D.C. “Nothing was ever thrown out — never!” Found among the treasures was a box of Christmas cards, the work of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, father of the famous artist, Andrew Wyeth. Momence is right under our noses, just 13 miles east of Bradley. It’ll be "green Tuesday”, April 20, when Mollie Starasinich and Elizabeth Kinder plan to entertain the Branch. Hope to see you there, Jo Zaletel. We miss you! Springtime and Easter! What a glorious time of the year! May you all find joy in the sweet odor of sanctity and sweet blossoms of Spring! EMMA LUSTIG, Reporter See Br. 25 report on page 26. NO. 24, LA SALLE, IL 1 wrote at the end of January about the lovely weather we were having, and then, just as I expected, Mother Nature reminded us that it was still winter and we produced a few weeks of extremely cold days with plenty of snow and freezing rain. The weatherman predicted that March will come in like a lamb — does that mean that March will go out like a lion? followed by April showers? Anne Kastigar had surgery recently in Peoria and is at home making a good recovery. You are in our prayers, Anne, as are all of our sick and shut-in members. The members offer their sympathy to Theresa Jensen and Shirley Miller, whose brother, Raymond Rolando passed away on February 17th. May God grant his soul Eternal Rest. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 15th, at 6:30 p.m. (note the earlier time) in the La Salle Catholic School South Library. We will be enjoying a POTS and PANS POTLUCK DINNER at that time. We ask each member to bring a covered dish (recipe from the ZARJA “Pots and Pans” Page or the Pots and Pans cookbook) and their own table service. Reservations should be made by Monday, April 19th with Betty Stack (224-1949) or Anne Wangler (223-5556) so we’ll know how many members to plan for. We should have a good time — plan to attend. I wish all of you a most Blessed and joyous Easter. ANNE WANGLER, Reporter NO. 32, EUCLID, OH Feb. meeting was a Valentine celebration! Our Sweetheart Queen was member, Ceal Znidar. Pres. Anne Cooke put a heart crown on her head and gave her a red rose. All the members received Valentine candy which was brought in by some of the members. Thanks to them for candy and door prizes! Speaking of prizes, it is time for members to be gathering up gifts for our Chinese Auction in October, our main fund raiser for this year. A CRAFTY IDEA! When you visit your favorite craft store, look for Caron Christmas Knitting Yarn. On some of the labels is a pattern for a crocheted Christmas Tree Skirt. Pattern uses 10 skeins of Christmas Ombre and 2 skeins of white yarn. My Florida/Canadian neighbor made one, it is beautiful. I will start my skirt this week. If the pattern is not available in your area, $1.00 and a self-addressed stamped envelope will bring it to you. Make checks payable to ZARJA, and mail to: Evelyn A. Majercik 49 Beverly Port Orange, Florida 32127 We have many members on the sick list. Vice-pres. Faye Starman is recuperating at home after a stay in the hospital. Eleanor Latkovic, also recuperating at home as arc Mary Zakrajšek, Mary Golobic and Ann Godlar. We are happy to see Mary Ster doing so well and getting out alter her stroke. We wish all our sick members a speedy recovery to good health. We are sad to report that we had one death recently. Mary Kovach Strnad, age 101 passed away on Feb. 2nd. She resided at the Slovene Home for 11 years. Another member, Rosemary Bour lost her husband on Feb. 7th after a long illness. Our deepest sympathy to the Kovach, Strnad and Bour families. Our Mother of the Year is Jean McNulty. We hope that our members will attend the dinner and bring a guest with you! That'll make it a great day for Jean, one that she will long remember. She is our very active member. So, mark your calendar for May 19th for our Mother’s Day Dinner! Hermine Strainer led us in saying the rosary in March for our lenten devotion. We should all try to do something special in Lent, for someone less fortunate than ourselves. We received a letter from our Regional President for Ohio and Michigan, Evelyn Majercik. that our Ohio Convention meeting will be on Oct. 17th, hosted by Br. 15 at St. Lawrence Church. Members, please mark that date so we will have a nice turn out to make it a very successful day. Member, Jo Comenshek has a supply of the new cookbooks, Pots & Pans. This makes a very wonderful gift for someone who likes to cook and try new recipes. Thanks to our members, Mary Ster, Vida Cinco and Hermine Strainer for their donations to the refreshment fund. Our hostesses, Ceal McLean and daughter, Adrienne do a very nice job decorating the tables for the holiday of the month. This time we had hearts and Valentines. Thanks, ladies, for all the work you do to make it look so nice. To all members who will be celebrating their birthdays and anniversaries in April, we send wishes for happiness and good health. Members, please check your dues books to make sure you are paid up to date. It will be a great help when Secretary Charlotte Perdan has all dues paid and the books closed. Thanks, ladies. Members, try to attend our meetings and bring a friend. We are always happy to welcome new members and guests. Happy Easter to all. St. Martin’s hosted the Peace Mass on Thursday, February 25. It was dedicated especially to pray for peace in the former Yugoslavia. Our branch members prepared the refreshments for coffee an’, served after the Mass. Thank you, ladies, to all who donated and those who helped serve and clean up afterward; we appreciated your help. Again our branch sent used Christmas cards to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City, NV, a project we have had for a number of years. Hostesses for our February meeting were Lucille Svatos and Angeline Morin; the door prize was brought by Agnes Mattson and won by Adeline Mustonen. Others winning during the social hour were Agnes Tekautz, Angela Tekautz, Molly Wilson and Adeline Mustonen. Lucille Svatos is visiting Paris, France, the lucky lady! She was accompanied by her daughter, Kathy Bush. Kathy’s daughter, Amy Bush, is studying in Paris for this quarter — what a wonderful opportunity for all of them. Our March meeting was held during Lent so we had no hostesses, but we enjoyed a games party after our meeting, proceeds went toward paying the premiums of our members 80 years of age and over. (This has always been enjoyed by our members.) Agnes Mesojedec provided the door prize for our meeting. The weather is getting warmer, it is a beautiful day here in Soudan today and it makes a person feel so much better. Have a nice spring, everyone! REALLY IS! There really is a spaceman named Thomas! He’s a wonderful, almost 6 year old boy who lives in Oak Park and goes to kindergarten there. When the class had a special day called “space day”, Thomas dressed up in a space suit he made himself! All his classmates did the same thing and they had a lot of fun! For this occasion, they had a party and entertainment and played all kinds of games. One of them was to do this Crossword Puzzle we’ve printed here that was created by Thomas’ mom. Do you think you can do it, too? Why don’t you try? (The answers are at the bottom of page 32, in case you need to check if you’re right!) Thomas and his mom and dad Miriam and Mark Burkland, and DAVY’S COLUMN Holy Saturdays of Yesterday When 1 was a child, Easter was, as it is now, a special time to spend with family. All of Holy Week was special with last minute preparations for Easter Sunday. But of all the days of that week, it is Holy Saturday that holds a special place in my heart. It’s Holy Saturday I seem to remember the clearest and with a fondness. It was special in a quiet sort of way. Good Friday was over. Therefore, there was only one big task left to perform in the Easter preparations. In the afternoon we’d head to church and have our baskets blessed. We were over the lenten hump, so to speak. Only the excitement of Easter morning was ahead. My two sisters and I would each have our own little basket, which mom would let us fill with whatever we wanted. Only one item was a standard; a ham sandwich made from the bread mom baked for Easter and a slice of ham from the Easter ham. My cousin, who lived next door, would go to church with us with her own basket. Sometimes one or two of our neighborhood friends would join us. (Naturally, they each brought along a basket with the manditory ham sandwich.) Holy Saturday had a “magic” about it. It was the only day we could go to church in our play clothes, and no one scolded. In fact, ladies came for the basket blessing with curlers in their hair. No one seemed to notice. When I was a child, during Lent, all the statues in the church were covered with purple cloth. They remained that way from Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday afternoon, when the church was prepared for the evening Easter Vigil. For the first time in over a month, we'd see the statues and flowers being brought in to decorate the altar. As I sat in the pew, waiting for the priest to come out and bless the baskets, I would close my eyes and inhale the scent of the Easter lilies. It was so good to smell flowers in church, again. After the baskets were blessed, we all would pile back into the car and show each other what we packed for the blessing, but best of all we’d eat were our blessed ham sandwiches. Even though supper was only an hour away, mom didn’t yell. She couldn’t. It was “holy food,” and everyone knows “holy food” isn’t bad. It can’t spoil supper. HAPPY EASTER! baby sister, Katharine Eloise, whose second birthday is April 13th (Happy Birthday, Katharine!) hope you all have fun with the puzzle... ...and Thomas says he’ll wave to us from the moon, when he gets there!
