IN PEACE CORPS
(Reprint from Sheboygan Press)
The Peace Corps is doing a good job, according to Miss Priscilla A. Helm, aged 22, who now is serving in the slums of Lima, Peru, where she and her associates are helping to make a better life lor the people living there.
Miss Helm is related to Mrs. Marie Prisland of Sheboygan, Wise., who is a cousin of her mother. Parents of the young volunteer are Mr. and Mrs. Howard S. Helm of Reseda, Calif.
As a child, Miss Helm lived in Lima eight years, while her father worked for an airline. She still has a speaking knowledge of Spanish so she asked to be assigned to Latin America, after she completed an orientation program. Her request was granted.
Sociology was her major, French, her minor, while she was a student at Valley State College in California. Part of her senior year was spent on a research project on alcoholics at Olive View Hospital in S.vlmar. She was graduated from the college last June.
Lives in Barriada
Since late November she has been living in the barriada of Pray Martin de Porras — the oldest in Lima, about six or seven years. Although it is better than most barriades, a great deal needs to be done because the poverty, disease and filth are great. Conditions are extreme in terms of man misery, she states.

Ziegenhorn and Katliie Dicke, the latter came from Madison to be on the program.
Vocalists were Patrick Ziegenhorn and David Girdaukas. A piano solo by-Jackie Rupar, accordion numbers by Marilyn and Karen Kotnik and Sandra Souchek and Mary Ann Visek, Milwaukee, the violinist on the program, provided variety musically. Piano accompaniments were by Gail Girdaukas.
The baton twirling demonstration by Barbara Schmidt was another phase. Mary Ann Vertacic, Mary Kol-beck and Lindy Schneider presented a Marionette show.
Refreshments were served at the conclusion of the program.
BR. NO. 1 HAS PROGRAM FOR MOTHERS

To honor mothers and especially Mrs. Johanna Suscha, Mother of the Year, Br. 1, Sheboygan presented an entertaining program at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church hall. On the above picture the performing children are seen with Mrs Suscha on the left and on the right, Mrs. Mary Godez, president of Br. no. 1 and Mrs. Marie Prisland, who was the chairman of the program.
Participants were 20 junior members, who sang, played instruments and recited verses in praise of mothers.

POPE JOHN XXIII
Christians throughout the world bemoan the death of Pope John XIII. His strong heart gave up the struggle a long and almost Incredible duel with death. “My time will come at night”, the Pope had once said. “By day I have church business.” The 81 year old pope — by official Vatican reckoning the 261st pontiff and spiritual ruler of the world’s Catholics — died at 7:49 p.m.
His last words before he fell into a final coma, hours before death were, ‘‘that they may be one ” — the prayer of Christ at the Last Supper.
He was called ‘‘pope of unity and peace”. The cause of world peace was so dear to him. Throughout his final illness he expressed his hopes for peace, Christian unity and social justice many times. His efforts towards these ends had brought him the praise of statesmen around the world.
Good will was the theme in the pope’s efforts for a “thaw” in relations with other Christian Churches, but it extended in the pope’s approach to all other problems of modern world.
"Ever has the church condemned errors; frequently she has condemned them with the greatest severity,” the pope said in his speech opening the ecumenical council Oct. 11, 1962. "Nowadays, however, the spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity; she considers that she meets the needs of the present day by demonstrating the validity of her teaching rather than by condemnations.”
DEEPEST SYMPATHY
We announce with deep sadness, the death of our Juvenile Director of S. W. U.,
Mrs. Christine Menart of Forest City, (Vandling), Pa.
Mrs. Menart passed away on June 12th, 1963. She was a loyal and courageous person who even throughout her illness, did her work and carried out her responsibilities fully. The members of the branch in Forest City and all her friends throughout the states knew her to be a very friendly and warm-hearted officer and we again looked forward to seeing her at the coming convention. She enrolled the largest number of juvenile members in the history of S. W. U. and was secretary of Branch no. 7, where we have the largest juvenile circle.
Mrs. Menart was a widow for the last 13 years, who loved her family and was proud of them. She had a great capacity for love as anyone reading her frequent branch write-ups could see. Her thoughts were always of following the will of God in all things — that tribulations and worries of this world were only measures by which our heavenly reward would be determined. Chris lived a life of service to others and love of her fellow man. We will miss her greatly and extend to her family our deepest sympathy and pray that the noble soul of Mrs. Christine Menart will live in eternal happiness.

As soon as he became pope he commented on a wide range of topics His words reflected his concern for the state of the world and its people. Here are some examples from his addresses and writings:
On peace — "Seized by anxiety for the good of all, we feel it our duty to beseech men, especially those who have the responsibility of public affairs, to spare no labor in order to insure that world events follow a reasonable and human course . . . Universal peace is a good that interests all men without distinction. To all men, therefore, we have opened our soul.”
Let them (the world’s leaders) give ear to the anguished cry ‘peace, peace’ which rises up to heaven from every part of the world, from innocent children and those grown old, from individuals and communities.”
On Christian unity — “The Catholic Church considers it her duty to work actively so that there may be fulfilled the great mystery of that unity, which Jesus Christ invoked with fervent prayer.”
On racial equality — “Our sorrowing gaze turns also to the other children of God everywhere, suffering because of race or economic conditions ... and through limitation on the exercise of natural and civil rights.”
On a godless society — "The most fundamental modern error is that of considering the religious demands of the human soul as an expression of feeling or of fantasy, or a product of some contingent event and should be thus eliminated as an anchronlsm and as an obstacle to human progress.”
There are quite many other problems he touched. These show already how wonderful a pope he was. Minding his words will be very profitable for our spiritual life.
SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION Scholarship Winners
The Scholarship Committee ruled that 3 scholarships be granted in 1963-64 due to the many applications received and because of a nice gain in sold bonds and other contributions to the scholarship fund.
The winners are:
JOSEPH SKORJANEC, Gilbert, Minn., an “A” student and member of the National Honor Society. He is attending St. John’s University at Collegeville, Minnesota, where in the fall he will major in dual subjects: Physics and Mathematics. His aim is to become an engineer. His mother and two sisters are members of Branch 31, Gilbert.
ROSANNE SAVOL, a member since infancy of Branch 20, Joliet, 111., where her mother and several relatives are also members. She is an “A” student and member of the National Honor Society and will enroll
“What I Know
★ For the past thirty-six years the Slovenian Women’s Union has been a means of binding all Slovenian women and their descendants together in their work to promote the education of the young, both intellectually and culturally, or rather, soc.ally.
The junior classes to this organization, I feel, are one of the greatest aides in this educational promotion. By working together on group projects, these children learn to shoulder responsibilities and to help as well as be helped. This enables them to become better adults. The scholarships given offer an economic push towards further academic education — a goal to work for, to advance one’s self.
This Union not only helps to shape our future A-mericans, but offers a group to which these women with a common national bond can present their ideas. “Zarja”, the monthly publication of the Slovenian Women’s Union, passes these ideas on to each branch in the country. Thus, all members from coast to coast are acquainted with the many activities of their sister branches. Whether the action is in regard to bowling leagues, favorite recipes, marriages, anniversaries, or drill teams — all this news Is of interest and is happily read.
I am glad to be a part of the Slovenian Women’s Union. I only hope that others will see what they are missing by not belonging and will join me in being a member of this union of Slovenian women.

The Slovenian Women’s Union of America was established in Chicago on December 19, 192G, was incorporated in the state of Illinois on December 14, 1927. Mrs. Marie Prisland, now the honorary president, headed the move for the incorporation and so became its founder and its first president. Membership in the Union was open to all Slovenian women and also their daughters.
As all other organizations that are formed, the SWU had its purpose. The original purpose of the SWU was, and still is, the propagation and upbringing of a cultural, religious, and national pride.
As the Slovenian women moved from place to place, the SWU moved with them. Soon it became a nationwide organization and it could look with pride upon its branches and accomplishments. Today the SWU has branches all over the United States and these branches are mainstays of their respective communities.
The headquarters of the SWU is in Chicago, and its present President is Mrs. Antonia Turek. The Secretary is Mrs. Albina Novak and the Treasurer is Mrs. Josephine Železnikar. There are also many other women in the directorate and also all the heads of the many active departments.
Each month the SWU puts out its own organ. This is called "Zarja — The Dawn”, and it is the official publication of the SWU. The editor of this magazine is Mrs.

JOAN MAHAFFEY, member of Branch 28, Calumet, Michigan. Her mother and sister are also members of that branch. Joan is an “A” student and a freshman at the Northern Michigan University. She is majoring in Mathematics and wishes to become a teacher. At present she is teaching catechism, once a week, to a class of 20 sixth graders of Saint Christopher’s parish in Marquette.

About S.W.U.”	,
Since its found’ng thirty-seven years ago, the Slovenian Women’s Union has endeavored to unite the American women of Slovenian descent, and to create a better appreciation of their great heritage. With its roots planted firmly in Catholic principles, the society accomplishes this by sponsoring numerous activities.
The S. W. U. has always stood as a promoter of educational and cultural advancement. It provides its members with the opportunity to visit the famous historical landmarks of our country as well as those abroad by sponsoring several excursion tours each year.
Many of the S. W. U. branches across the United States have organized bowling leagues, which enable their members to meet weekly and, at the same time, enjoy a favorite sport.
Frequently, the local branches engage in events as a means to better unite the members. Card parties, white elephant sales, sewing displays, and occasionally bakery sales occupy the time of the women.
In order to carry on the aims of educational advancement, the Slovenian Women’s Union maintains a scholarship fund from which two academic scholarships are awarded annually.
The link that connects the 106 branches is the Union’s monthly publication Zarja (The Dawn). This magazine contains news of the S. W. U. activities and information of the events that have taken place. To satisfy the domestic interests of the readers, The Dawn curries a section of recipes and cooking tips. The vast circulation of this magazine is a proof of its popularity both here and In Europe.
To put a dash of Slovenia in the great melting pot of America is the purpose of the Slovenian Women’s Union. And it has been achieving this successfully for almost four decades.

Corinne Leskovar, and the various branches write in and tell about their activities. The whole magazine is very interesting and well done.
The SWU has its chaplain in the person of the Rev. Claude Okorn, O.F.M. He is the pastor of the Slovenian parish in Milwaukee. Each month “Zarja”’ — The Dawn” carries an inspiring message written by him.
Every 3 years the SWU holds a national convention during which the delegates of the various branches meet and discuss the work of the previous years. Such conventions are also held on the statewide level, and each year a different city is the host for the event.
This is my knowledge of the SWU and I hope that it prospers and carries on its excellent work for many years to come.

SUPREME PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
1 would like to thank the members of Br. no. 38, Chisholm, Minn., for their prayers and recitation of the Ros-ary at the bier of my brother, John Gornick, who passed away last month at his home in Chisholm. Also, a sincere thank you to those who sent us sympathy cards and offered Masses for the repose of his soul. We are deeply grateful.
The ladies of Ohio are getting busy for the great fall event, the Bazaar on Oct. 13, 19G3 at the St. Vitus Auditorium. With all the enthusiasm that the ladies are showing for this event, it should be the largest and best we ever had. There will be something doing all the time during the course of the day. A baking demonstration, style show, drill demonstrations by our juniors and booths with all kinds of beautiful things hand-made by the members will fill the interest of everyone. We are also hoping to have the outlying Ohio branches of Warren, Girard, Niles, Conneaut, Fairport, Lorain, Barberton, Painesville and Kent join us this year. Come on, ladies, show the public wrhat you can do. You are all invited by the Cleveland branches and we also have space available for you.
Our new cookbook which is in the printing stage now will be larger and have many more new recipes in this new revision. W.e will have it on sale at the Bazaar.
Zveza Day in Lemont, 111. is this month on July 21st. That day, all members are able to come to the beautiful Franciscan Fathers’ Shrine and spend a couple of happy days in prayer. Cleveland branches are planning on a group by bus, leaving Friday night, July 19th and arriving
back home on Monday morning, early, in time for those who have to report for work.
We will travel by Greyhound Bus and the fare will be about $15.00 round trip. (Last month’s quoted fare was incorrect — it is $15.00 not $11.50.) Anyone who wishes to join our bus may do so by contacting the secretary of your branch or yours truly. Here will be a nice place to meet old and new friends. See you in Lemont, July 21st!
Our tours to Europe which left June 13 under the able guidance of Marie Prisland and Frances Seitz and on June 20th with Albina Novak as tour tour guide became the largest total group of Slovenian women ever to visit Slovenia in a group. There were 140 passengers on the two planes. I am very proud and happy that our Union is so well-represented. And, all the travelers are happy to be able to take this excursion with all their worries in the capable hands of our fine leaders. To all our travelers, I again extend wishes for a very nice vacation abroad and do come back safe and well.
To all who are vacationing in the States, wishes for a good time and safe driving!
Pennsylvania State President, Mary Tomsic of Strabane, is also takmg a trip abroad this summer and accompanying her are her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter! Bon Voyage and we all wish you a happy journey, Mrs. Tomsic!

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wise. This being the month of July, our vacations are well-planned and in full swing. No meeting in July and August, but we resume Sept. 8th at 2 p. m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church Hall. Our card party will be on Sept. 4th at 7:30 p. m. also at the above-mentioned hall. Each table will have a beautiful apron prize made by our members and door awards also, followed by refreshments. I^et’s help our chairlady, Ruth Sheck and co-chairlady, Mary Turk, to have a big success for our branch.
The junior members held a very talented program for our mothers in May. Gifts were awarded to all the junior members present as also the mothers. Lunch was served by Frances Melanz and her committee.
I hope they will keep up their talent. As the years pass, there are so many scholarships — we hope one day they may be entitled to them.
We sure had a nice group from Sheboygan in Milwaukee for the State Convention.
To the Hlade family, we wish to extend deepest sympathy on the recent loss of their mother. May Bhe rest in peace.
Let’s remember all of our sick members and deceased in our daily prayers.

No. 2, Chicago, 111. This month is the most important summer month for our members. It’s time once a-gain for our annual Zveza Day in Lemont, 111, July 21st. and to all, we extend a cord.al invitation to attend. Those of you who have never been there should make it a point to do so this year. We hope the weather will be favorable — because we are outdoors all day. This year, the program is as follows:
10:00 Procession to the Franciscan Fathers’ Cemetery; Memorial to Rev. A. Urankar.
10:30 Holy Mass at the Grotto of Lady of Lourdes;
12:00 NOON, Dinner at Baraga Home.
(All afternoon there is a picnic atmosphere — family get-togethers and visiting. During the course of the day, there will be a program on the grounds and introduction of all our guests. Games for the children will also be announced in the afternoon.)
2:30 PM Vespers at the St. Mary’s Seminary Chapel. Departure takes place in the late afternoon.
Our members are preparing refreshments for the picnic and there will be plenty of good things to eat and drink. The Shrine is a lovely place and most of our members and families love to make it a yearly event — to come out and enjoy the surroundings and friends.
We hope to have a number of buses coming in this year from as far away as Biwabik, Minn., West Allis, Wis., Indianapolis, Ind. and Cleveland, Ohio. There are also many who come by car from all over Illinois. If there is any information needed as to overnight reservations, etc., you may write directly to the Fathers, 1400 Main St., Lemont, 111. and they will accommodate you. For those who come from far distances and will be present on Saturday night, there will be a candlelight procession around the Grotto. All our members are invited to attend this beautiful ceremony, too. See you all in Lemont, Sunday, July 21st!

No. 7, Forest City, Pa. We wish to convey our deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Christine Menart, our long-time secretary of Br. 7 and Supreme Officer of S.W.U. Chris passed away on June 12th after being in the hospital many times in the past year. I visited Chris just a few days before her death to discuss the secretary’s work which I have been asked to take over. She felt good then but got worse in the evening and had to return to the hospital again where she died at 10:30 p.m. on June 12th. She wanted to live and said that she would be going to the convention next year.
The funeral was from St. Joseph’s church with Rev. Fr. Andrew Krusin-skle officiating. She was buried at Mother of Sorrow Cemetery. It was a large funeral as Chris had so many friends. We all feel very sad and pray that God will reward her with eternal peace.
We have more members in the hospital now. Mrs. Agnes Rocuba and Mrs. Mildred Dutchman are both confined and wish them speedy recoveries.

No. 14, Euclid, Ohio Congratulations to our sister, Mrs. Jennie Erzen, and her husband “Srecko,” who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, May 4th, 19G3. We wish them many more happy anniversaries.

A very enjoyable time was had by all present, which included some enthusiastic singing, eating and enjoyable liquid refreshments. We also wish to extend happy birthday greetings to our other sisters who were unable to be present, and whose birthdays were in the month of May.
Sister Agatha Zajc left by plane Monday, May 27th, for a ten week visit to Europe to see her three sisters and one brother. May Agatha have a pleasant trip and a very good time.
Sister Frances Schenk was in Huron Road Hospital for major surgery She is now recuperating nicely at the home of her son.
Mrs. Mary Tich passed away April 30th after a month’s illness. We wish to extend sincerest condolences to her family.
Donations to our good time treasury were made by Sisters Mary Smrdel, Olga Ozanich, Antonia Kostrevec, Jennie Vidovich, Mary Stražišar from Kewanee Ave. and Mary Mersnik.
Many of our Sister’s nimble fingers are busy sewing these days and crocheting for the benefit and success of our October bazaar. We could use more volunteers.
We hope that our Sisters will enjoy the summer season that is now with us and the usual vacations and trips that are a part of the warm weather.

very good attendance at our Zveza Day and State Convention. Our guest, Albina Novak, Supreme Secretary of
S.	W. U., spoke about many interesting things and we were all most interested in her remarks. She also explained the recent problems of printing, etc., which has raised the cost of Zarja. We know all our members appreciated her explanation and that now, we’ll all get on the ball and do
what is best for the organization.
Our thanks to Father Slapsak for his excellent talk on his first days at St. Lawrence Church, 31 years ago. He was celebrating his anniversary on May 21st.
We also thank Mrs. Novak for her interesting talk at the banquet and to all the branches who sent representatives to the meeting and banquet
—	making it a great day to remember.
After the banquet, there was dancing and a wonderful social time when all members could get re-acquainted.
Our cooks deserve the greatest thanks for their good work which we all enjoyed. It really was delicious.

No. 16, So. Chicago, 111. Our annual chicken dinner was well-attended and a good time was had by all. A big “Thank You” goes to Jean Bukvich for the use of her home for this purpose and also to our two good cooks, Katie Triller and Draga Pavlovich. Honored was Mrs. Agnes Cherne, the only charter member present. We regretted the absence of the others, but we do honor them in our hearts.
We were saddened by the death of two members in the month of April namely, Mrs. Polashek and Sajatovich. Our sympathy to the bereaved families.

No. 17, West Allis, Wis. — We chartered a bus for the Bowling Tournament to La Salle, 111. with 5 teams participating. Women’s Union Br. no. 17, and of course, we had our usual group of spectators along to help cheer the bowlers. You could distinguish the Allis group from the others very easily by the carnations they wore. Girls
—	when in doubt about flowers, call Angelyn Johnson — Greenfield Floral on 27th and Greenfield. She is a SWU member and can give you a lot of pointers in regards to acheiving a green thumb and can supply flowers for all occasions.
Congratulations and best wishes are extended to St. Mary’s Lodge no. 1G5, KSKJ on their 45the anniversary, also the charter members: Frances Marolt, Katherine Horvath, Josephine Sekula and Sophie Moez. They celebrated the occasion with a High Mass receiving Holy Communion in a body,
followed by a breakfast at St. Mary’s Auditorium. Congratulations also to Mary Petrich, the local secretary, supreme KSKJ officer, for being elected to the Wisconsin Fraternal Congress as a director. We are very proud of her as she deserves this honor. Mary is a hard worker and they can be proud of her, just as we are.
Bon Voyage to Marie Prisland, Albina Novak and Josephine Schlossar, who are all taking trips to Europe. May we all enjoy good health and have a real nice vacation.
On May 18, our recording secretary, Jenny Medle, was married to Valentine Stroj of Holmes Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana, at St. Mary Help of Christians Church. She was born in St. Vid, near Ljublana and Mr. Stroj from Brezji, Gorensko. Best wishes and congratulations to a very nice couple. They are honeymooning in Florida.
Our deepest sympathy to Edward and Mary Evans and their family upon the loss of his father, Peter Evans, who passed away after a lingering illness. May he rest in peace.
Preparations are being made for our 35th anniversary which we will celebrate with a High Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body on Sunday, October G, 19G3 at the 7:30
A.	M. Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Church. Immediately after the Mass, a breakfast will be served with a short program. More details to follow thru the mail and Zarja.
Members who promised prizes for card prizes, kindly bring them to the card parties on the dates Sept. 29 and November 3, or to my home or the secretary’s. They are most welcome.
Our monthly meeting will be dispensed thru July, August and September. Anyone in arrears with their dues may stop in at the secretary’s home.

No. 20, Jol:.et, III. Our Mother’s Day meeting was well-attended. At this meeting we honored the most popular mother, Mrs. Jennie Sprengel, whose achievements for the branch in the past were well described by the president, Mrs. Planinšek. She later presented her with a corsage and placed her on a chair beside her. All other popular mothers from the past were mentioned. At this meeting, Mrs. Mili Koracin and her daughter Katja from Ljubljana were introduced, although they really did not need much introduction since many of our members who traveled to Ljubljana in the past found Mili to be a very pleasant and congenial hostess. She is here on a visit with her daughter where they will observe the customs of our country.

After the meeting, refreshments were served and community singing followed directed by Mrs. Sprengel. Mill Koracln as always also joined in the singing group since she herself is a good singer, and to whom Mrs Sprengel is well-known since she was also a guest of Mili Koracln in 1961.
We mourn the loss of our good member, Mrs. Josephine Kochevar from N. Broadway, who died suddenly at the age of 75. She is the mother of ten children, five daughters and five sons. She is also survived by her husband Frank, who is treasurer of St. Joseph Society KSKJ. Mrs. Kochevar joined our branch many years ago, recommended by Catherine Judnich, born Aug. 15, 1887, died May
20,	1963. Mrs. Kochevar was well-known here In Joliet. She is also survived by many grandchildren.
Mrs. Mary Kolar from Raub St., also mourns the loss of her sister, Mrs. Frances Chinderle. Mrs. Anna Savol mourns the passing of her father-in-law, Joseph Savol. Our condolences to the bereaved families.
Our member Mrs. Anna Ancel celebrated her golden anniversary with her husband, Peter. They live on Center St A gala party was prepared for them at St. Joseph’s Park, preceded by a Mass at St. Joseph church. Our coi»gratulations.

No. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. Our 35th Anniversary celebration was held on May 1st with a pot-luck dinner. Organizer of Br. no. 21, Cecelia Brodnik, did a masterful job as mistress of ceremonies. Among the guests introduced were Mother of the Year and Charter member, Frances Kozely; Supreme President, Toni Turek; Supreme Auditor, Vicki Faletič; State President of Ohio, Ella Starin; President of no. 18, Nettie Strukel, and representing no. 25, Dorothy Sternisa.
Our honored charter members, Lillian Lunder, Theresa Zupanclc and Ella Prisel were also present for the
celebration. Lucky winners of our annual project were: 1st prize, hand-made Afghan to Margaret Lorek, 12225 Lena Ave.; 2nd prize, % gal. A get-well card was signed and sent to Mary Nosan from all the members. To all our sick members we send best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Vacation-bound is Frances Mlklick, along with her husband. They will enjoy a two month excursion in Europe. Best of luck and a happy voyage.

anniversary banquet was held at Rl-ik’s Inn on May 15th. Sally catered. Mrs. Katherine Kapsch was our honored guest. She was chosen Mother of the Year by the S. W. U. at this month’s meeting. Mrs. Kapsch helped organize the Dawn Club — this is a social branch of the organization. Very impressive remarks were given by the president, Mrs. Lyle Brennan, upon presenting a beautiful gift to Mrs. Kapsch.
Prizes were also given for the mother with the most children, Mrs. Leo Erchull, a prize for the oldest mother present, Mrs. Wm. Rowe, a prize to the youngest mother, Mrs. Frank Vidmar and to the mother with the most grandchildren, Mrs. Frank Vraneslch. All the ladies present were given an orchid, compliments of Wal-green’s Drug Store.
A short business meeting wras held after the dinner. Mrs. Stanley Levar came to speak for the Chamber of Commerce about having different nationality days here in July. Slovenian Day will be July 19th. The ladies offered to bake poticas which will be served to the public that evening. A varied program of singing, etc., is being planned. A display of antiques will be made, also. All the ladies taking part in serving, etc., will wear Slovenian costumes. Mrs. Frank Pre-shiren is general chairman of this affair.
Mrs. Ruth Zaverl was welcomed as a new member — glad to have you, Ruth.
There will be no meetings in the summer — until September. We wish all ill members a speedy recovery.

No. 24, LaSalle, III. The May issue of Zarja was so interesting and enjoyable with the special mother’s section, I’m sure all our members loved it as much as I did. The only disappointment was not seeing anything from our branch — as I know there are many of our members who could write and send in interesting articles. We hope that in the future, someone will surprise us with a write-up from LaSalle! and, next May, we certainly must have a chosen mother from our branch!
I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the many members and friends who sent me get-well messages after my accident in which I broke a few ribs.
They say that misfortune never sleeps and so it was with mo when
I	fell in my own home. Once again, may God bless you all for your kindness and thoughtfulness.

We welcome two new members to Br. 26, namely, Anne Steckel and her sister, Frances Parke. We have quite a few sick members and two members who are blind. Remember them in your prayers and God bless you.

No. 32, Eucl'd, Ohio. Our meeting on May 7th was opened with prayer led by our president — with a very nice attendance. We made it short after which there was the annual Mother’s Day Party and birthdays of all our Sisters who have celebrated so far this year. These ladies gave to the birthday fund at this meeting: Anna Pierce, Mary Cercek, Angela Yarm, Pauline Vech, Angela Barko-vich and Josephine Feme. The goodies were brought by the following: Theresa Potokar, Lill’an Vehovec, Mollie Gregorič, Mary Zele, Anna Te-lcavec, Anna Telisman and Katherine Golinar (birthday cake). Putting all these together and you’ll see that we had a good time. We also sang to all who were honored for birthdays and mother’s day and believe you me, we did sing very nice, even our Blessed Mother was in our midst.
Mrs. Mary Drobnich brought a special gift which went to Lillian Vehovec, our secretary. It was a basket made of sponge-like material. We thank Mrs. Drobnich for her good thought and it also made our treasury a little richer. We thank all our good sisters who helped in any way, monev or goodies, and for their effort to help in the kitchen and serving.
Just one week later, our president took sick and underwent surgery on May 14th for append’eftis. We wish her a speedy recovery as she will be

With picnicing in full swing, here are a couple popular potato salad recipes:
WARM GERMAN POTATO SALAD
4	slices bacon
Vi c. finely chopped onion
2 tbsp. water % c. vinegar
3 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt
Vi tsp. pepper 3 c. diced cooked potatoes 1 tbsp. minced parsley
Boil 6 medium-sized potatoes in their skins until tender. When cool peel and slice thinly into bowl. Cut bacon into small pieces and fry until crisp. Drain bacon. Into J cup of the bacon fat cook onion until translucent. Add water, sugar, salt, pepper, vinegar and bring to boil. Pour over potatoes and mix lightly. Heat salad by placing bowl in hot water. When ready to serve garnish with minced parsley. Serves 6.
PATIO POTATO SALAD 8 cups diced cooked potatoes Vz cup chopped celery (and tops)
Vi cup snipped parsley
Vi cup sliced green onions
Vi cup dill pickle, chopped
Vi cup French dressing. Pour over
vegetables. Mix lightly.
Blend	2%	tsp.	salt
1	cup salad dressing
1	tsp. dry mustard Add to salad and toss. Chill. (8-10 servings).
If desired, add 6 sliced radishes and % cubed cucumber.
Serve in bowl or on platter surrounded with salad greens, tomato sections, sliced hard-coolced eggs, etc.
Maple Nut Cake
(A favorite of our popular Editor’s family; made by their wonderful neighbor, Mrs. Agnes Zugel, Chicago, Illinois.)
MAPLE NUT CAKE
2Vi cups sifted cake flour (measured into sifter)
% cup granulated sugar % cup brown sugar
3	tsps. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
Make a well and add:
Vi cup Wesson oil 6 unbeaten egg yolks % cup cold water
2 tsps. maple flavoring
Beat the above with spoon until smooth.
Beat the following until stiff.
1 cup egg whites 1 tsp. cream of tartar
Pour egg yolk mixture over stiffly beaten egg whites and fold in just until completely blended then add % cup chopped pecans. Fold in. Pour batter into a 10 inch ungreased tube pan and bake at 325° for 55 minutes; then raise temperature to 350° for 10 to 15 minutes longer. Invert pan until cool.
Mrs. Zugel makes a simple butter frosting for this cake:
2	cups (Slightly less than one box)
powdered sugar
Vi cup butter, creamed
1	tsp. maple flavoring
Milk
Blend butter and sugar, adding flavoring and milk to make a soft consistency. Spread on cake when cooled.
How to Preserve a Husband
Be careful in your selection, do not choose too young, and take only such varieties as have been reared in good moral atmosphere. When once decided upon and selected, let that part remain forever settled and give your entire thought to preparation for domestic use. Some insist on keeping them in a pickle, while others are constantly getting them into hot water. This only makes them sour, hard and sometimes bitter. Even poor varieties may be made sweet, tender, and good by garnishing them with patience, well sweetened with smiles and flavored with kisses-to-taste. Then wrap them well in a mantle of charity. Keep warm with a steady fire of domestic devotion and serve with peaches and cream.

Their son, Jacob, graduated In June from Fenn College with
a doctorate in electrical engineering. Two days later, on June 15th, he married Ruth Ann Tirabasso; the bride is from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. God grant this couple a happy and healthy wedded life. To the parents, we send our best wishes — you have not lost a son, but gained a daughter.
Sympathy to Jennie Jaksa who lost her husband; we sympathize with her and her four sons and daughters. May he rest in peace. Eleanore Gatewood lost her brother in April — he was from New York. Our deepest condolences to her, too.
Mary Vodičar lost her brother, James Vidmar in May. We send our sympathy to her and may his soul rest in peace.
Our sister, Margaret Yamnick was 80 years young on June 10th. She was our president some time ago. We all wish her a very happy birthday and that she may live to see many more, God willing. We hope to see her at our meeting in Sept. And, to all our members, see you then.

No. 43, Milwaukee, Wise. We had a wonderful turn-out at our meeting in May. All officers were present which made our president, Mrs. Kolar very happy. We have six new members in our midst and they are very welcome.
Plans are getting underway for a trip to Lemont in July which is our annual trip for Zveza Day. We intend to make this a day, so don’t forget to let our secretary, Rose Kraemer know if you are joining us. She needs your reservation. This is a very nice occasion, July 21st.
Now, we have many plans to make for our next event, which is the card party in October. So, please come to our meeting with ideas and suggestions to make it a most successful affair.
We are extending our wishes to all sick members far and near, for good health and may God bless you all.

No 46, St. Louis, Mo. On May 19, we held the Mother’s Day Party at which our Mother of the Year, Margaret Zvanut, was honored.
It was good to see Mary Gregory again after so long a time. She is doing	real	well	after her	illness.
Congratulations to Marie Gardner on the birth of a baby boy, born at St. Mary's Hospital, on May 24th. She is at	home	now	and	doing	well.
We	will	not	have	any	meetings
during July and August. . Next meet' ing is	on	Sept.	8th,	second Sunday
of the month as always.
So the next occasion to look forward to is the Lemont Zveza Day, July
21.	Surely looking forward to seeing all the friends we made from last year, especially from Indianapolis, Ind. Hope you all make it this year. So, the next meeting will be Sept. 8th.

meeting was a large one, with a grand attendance followed by a pot-luck supper party. Oh, Oh! Some more calories, heh? Oh, well those calories will wear off in this heat!
Our girls were hard at work in May for the annual rummage sale. When there’s work to be done, our girls are there to do it!
The State Convention sponsored by branch 15 on May 19th was greatly enjoyed by four of our girls, Prances Seitz said is was a very interesting event and president. Rose Želodec said they were all received with the greatest respect which could be and is another invitation when there will be more doings.
Our branch’s very first president, Sophie Posch is on the sick list as is Sophie Zagorc. We all wish them a speedy recovery and we pray both our Sophie’s come home soon well a-gain.
Our president, Rose Želodec expresses deepest sympathy, on behalf of the members, to Rita Jerina who lost her husband and to Toni Turek whose brother, John Gornick passed away in Minnesota. Also, to my family on the loss of my sister-in-law. May they rest in peace. Prayer was offered for the deceased and all our sick members at the meeting.
Bazaar excitement has begun for us. My goodness, it’s only a few months away — Oct. 13th.

No. 52, Kitzville Loc., Minn. Dear sisters! Here it is, vacation time again and I do wish you all a pleasant summer. We held our meeting on June 5th at the Little Grove with 21 members present. The business meeting was brief.
Two of our members are ill, namely: Lena Strazishar and Julia Mancuso, who spent a few days at Hibbing General Hospital. We hope and pray that God will speed them on to rapid recoveries. Also, best wishes to all other sick members.
Congratulations to Mr . and Mrs. Frank Shega who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary and to Mr. and Mrs. Karl Oswald on their 40th anniversary. With so many years of marital bliss, we hope they all have many more happy years ahead.
Sister, Josephine Oswald, our president, ended the business session with prayer.
The social of the evening then took place, at which time sisters Veronica Krzmanich, Margaret Pogorels and Patricia Mancuso served a delicious lunch. Prizes were awarded to sisters, Ivana Prelesnik, Angeline Hrovat, Alice Barrato, Rose Zidarich, Ger-
trude Kochevar, Dorothy Russo, Mary Musech and Jennie Crea.
There will not be a meeting in July but again, we will be waiting to see you all at our Aug. 7th meeting at the Little Grove. Lunch committee for that month will be the Russos: Alberta, Dorothy and Mary and Julia Mancuso. So, with these words, we hope you all have a very nice summer vacation and drive safely to those going on trips. Make this the nicest and safest summer ever. For our Mother-Daughter Banquet, a group of fifty-nine members and guests had an impressive opening ceremony with Paulette Cernick, Lindy Juvančič, Patricia Robsel, Judy Juvančič and Susan Demass leading a procession to the shrine of the Blessed Mother as they sang, “Mother Dear, O, Pray For Me.” On reaching the shrine, Paulette Cernick crowned the Virgin while the little group continued singing with “Oh, Mary, We Crown Thee With Blossoms Today.”
Vice-president, Barbara Umeck welcomed all to our annual affair and then presented the Mother of the Year, Mrs. Sophie Kren, with a lovely gift.
Mrs. Mary Kristen received the door prize. Gifts were given to the following, Mmes. Fanny Serca, Theresa Za-yec, Sophie Kren, Mary Strauss, Vicki Penska, Katherine Russ and Mary Mehalco.
Paulette Cernick tap-danced to "Ida” accompanied by Mrs. Nettie Juvančič on the accordion. Patty Robsel played well known May hymns on the organ. Group singing was enjoyed by all from song books made for this occasion by Miss Dorothy Gorenc and the general chairman of the affair, Mrs. Matilda Cigolle.
A get-well card signed by all was sent to Mrs. Anna Kren. Mrs. Kren was missed at the banquet as she always attended in the past. And, hope you will attend many in the future, Mrs. Kren.
Dancing concluded the enjoyable evening with musio furnished by Mrs. Nettie Juvančič.
Meetings will resume in Sept. with a covered-dish dinner.

No. 56 Hibbing, Minn. Our regular monthly meeting was held on May 14 in the Assumption Hall club rooms. As warmer weather approaches our attendance Is better at these meetings and we were glad to see some faces we hadn’t seen during our cold winter months.
The subject taking up most of our interest at these meetings now is Min-
nesota Day, which will be held in Hibbing this year on Sept. 8, 1962. It is also our 30th anniversary this year go we hope to make this day a gala affair. We are looking forward to seeing many of our old friends and acquaintances there, and we assure you of a most pleasant day.
Lunch and social games ended this evening with prizes going to Valeri Carlson, Elizabeth Gaige, Caroline Kozina, Barbara Doshen, Ann Main-nerlch and Helen Miskulin.

We had a nice turn-out for our Mother’s Day dinner and were very happy to see 2 guests from distant states. There were the daughter and granddaughter of Mrs. Theresa Racher, namely, Mrs. Francis Mollis of Wyoming and Mrs. Pat Armijo of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mrs. Racher is one of the oldest members and all her family are members, too.
Wedding bells were ringing for the son of Frances Hribar. On June 22nd, Stan married Mary Lou Granada. We are wishing them a lot of happiness.
Congratulations to Jerry Majovsky who graduated from Girard High School. He is the grandson of our secretary, Mary Macek.

A picnic will be held on July 21st at Debevec’s Farm instead of our regular meeting. On Aug. 17th, we are hoping to have enough members to make a bus trip to Lemont. Many of us are looking forward to this.

No. 72, Pullman, 111. As I have not heard otherwise, I am assuming you are all well — except for Mrs. Dolinar, who has been sick for the last few months. She is on the road to recovery now and expects to be attending our meetings again soon. She has always been one of our “regulars” and we miss her very much. We are happy to see Mrs. Arko and Mrs. Shee-hy at our meetings. Both have had illnesses in the past.
We have had some pleasant meetings the last few months, and want to take this opportunity to thank the ladies for coming out, and especially to thank those ladies who brought such wonderful "goodies” to serve after the meetings.
There will be no meeting in July. Our meeting day falls on the same Sunday as Zveza day in Lemont — so instead, we will be seeing you in Lemont.
In August, we have been invited to hold our meeting at the home of Mrs. Stephie Sheehy, 7934 S. Euclid Ave. Everyone of you is invited — so do come — the more the merrier. If you have transportation, fine. If not, call me — PU-59857. We will have some cars available and will be glad to make arrangements for you. The date is Sunday, August 18th.

No. 77, N. S. Pittsburgh, Pa. Ladies, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my members, your families and friends at our annual picnic. It will be held on July 18th at the Chapel in Rlver-view Park. Everyone is sure to have a pleasant day, rain or shine, playing our favorite game. Refreshments will be served as in the past.

No. 83, Crosby, Minn. In the name of our branch, heartfelt sympathy to sister, Helen Kovali on the loss of her mother, Mary Kotzian, who passed away on March 23rd. Formerly, Mrs. Kotzian was from Ely. She made her home in Crosby for 13 years. Funeral and burial services were held in Ely. We pray for her eternal rest,
Afl the members at the May meeting signed a get-well card for sister, Ann Gerval. She has been sick for some time and hospitalized many times in the past year. It was good to see sister Evka Perpich at the meeting after a long absence. We are happy you are feeling better. Both members attended the meetings regularly in the past. God bless them and grant them speedy recoveries.
A memorial Mass was offered for our deceased members on May 13th at 11:25 a. m. Mass.
Mr. and Mrs. John Petrich are home after a 5 month stay at Fontana, Cal. I’m sure they are happy to be back in Minn.
Mr. and Mrs. George Zaukar left for Yugoslavia on May 29th. Wishing them good luck and hoping they have a nice time.
After the meeting, games were played. Our hostess, sister Grgurich, served a nice lunch. The potioa was delicious. Best wishes to all members. Have a wonderful summer.

No. 85, DePue, III. Just a short report from Br. 85. Our meetings this year weren’t too well attended due to the various illnesses of the members.
On May 12th, (Mother’s Day), Zveza members and the members of the SNPJ lodge pooled their efforts and talents together to commemorate the 50th anniversary of seven members, three of them our mutual members, Mrs. Frances Siska, Mrs. Mary Kuhar and Mrs. Theresa Grlic. A delicious dinner was served for the members of the two lodges by the younger members. The tables and the hall were attractively decorated with cut garden flowers and a 3-tiered anniversary cake.

Movies of Yugoslavia were shown by John Zugich, Jr., son of sister, Mary Zugich. They were of great interest to the various members of the societies.
Much fun and pleasure was found in visiting the country store that members had furnished with various useful items. I’m sure everyone had a good time, as things went smoothly. For such a large get-together, it was a big job — all done well, with the exception of a few blown fuses!
It was gratifying to talk and make the acquaintance of the various Slovenian visitors from the surrounding towns. One can never make too many friends!
We will dispense with our meetings during the Bummer months and resume them again in the fall. Good health and happiness to all during the vacation months.

No. 89, Oglesby, III. Br. no. 89 celebrated Its 25th anniversary beginning with a High Mass at Holy Family church on May 12th. Monday, May 13th, a banquet and program was held at Royal Lanes dining hall. Registration of guests began at 6:00 p. m. Punch and dinner were at 6:30 with Rev. James Morrissey giving the invocation. Mrs. Josephine Livek, past Supreme President, acted as toastmls-tress introducing Mrs. Mary Yazbec, the organizer of Br. 89. She in turn introduced the charter members.
BESEDA PAPEŽA JANEZA XX///
Zelo nam je hudo, kadar umre nam zelo ljuba o-aeba. Spomin nanjo je globoko vtisnjen v naše srce. Radi se spomnimo vsega, kar je pokojna oseba rekla, pisala ali naredila.
Taka oseba je pokojni sv. oče Janez XIII. Njegova oseba je kljub kratki dobi vladanja, pustila globoke sledove na samo cerkvenem življenju, ampak v življenju sveta. Vsakdo povdarja njegovo veliko ljubezen do človeka. Lahko bi ga imenovali papež malega človeka. Veliki in majhni so v njem videli očeta. Lahko bi rekli, da je bil ves svet njegova župnija.
Svetovno časopisje ga imenuje papeža miru in edinosti. In to je tudi bil. Njegov glas so poslušali ne samo katoličani, ampak tudi drugoverci. Sam je večkrat rekel: “Imam se drugo ovce, ki niso iz tega hleva. Tudi njih moram pripeljati tako, da bo kmalu en hlev in en pastir.
Koliko je mislil na edinost vseh cerkva nam priča njegov vesoljni cerkveni zbor, ki naj bi pomagal pripraviti zedinjenje vseh cerkva. Še malo pred smrtjo je-mlslil na edinost, ko je molil Jezusovo molitev, ki jo je opravil pri zadnji večerji, "da bi bili vsi eno.”
O njegovem velikopoteznem delu pričata posebno dve njegovi veliki okrožnici In sicer: Mati in učiteljica in Mir na zemlji. Prva obravnava gospodarske in družabne razmere današnjega človeka, v drugi pa papež povdarja pravice človeka. Govori o sodobnem človeku, katere-mu želi pokazati njegovo veliko dostojanstvo in ga z očetovsko ljubeznijo podučiti, kaj naj sam doprinese, da si ga bo ohranil. Da sveti oče želi vsem le samo dobro se vidi tudi iz tega, da je zadnja okrožnica naslovljena ne le kot običajno na patrijarhe, nadškofe, škofe, krajevne or-
dinarije, duhovnike in vernike vsega sveta, ampak tudi na vse ljude dobre volje.
Poleg splošnih problemov, ki se tičejo vsakega, se je sv. oče večkrat dotaknil tudi posebnih problemov s katerimi mora človeška družba računati. Njegovo mnenje je tako pomembno, da nam je takoj lažje pri duši, ko vidimo v njegovih izjavah velikodušnost, ki ga navdaja, ko misli na pomoč, ki jo človek potrebuje. Samo nekaj zgledov:
O mij-u. V srbi za dobro vseh ljudi čutimo, da je maša dolžnost, da prosimo ljudi, posebno tiste, ki so odgovorni za javne zadeve, da store vse, kar je v njihovi moči, da zagotove svetovnim dogodkom pameten In človeški razvoj. Svetovni mir je dobrina, ki je pri srcu vsakemu človeku brez ozira na razliko. Zato je naše srce odprto vsem ljudem.
O krščanski edinosti. Katoliška cerkev smatra za svojo dolžnost, da dejansko dela na tem, da doseže veliko skrivnost tiste edinosti, za katero je Jezus Kristus tako gorečo prosil.
O oblasti. Tudi sveti oče mora ubogati. Ima veliko svetovalcev, sodelavcev in drugih.
O klepetavosti. Jezik je telesni organ, ki se nahaja med nosom in brado in ki ga včasih rabimo prekomerno. Zadržujmo ga.
O misli na smrt. Vsak dan je dober za rojstvo in vsak dan je dober za smrt. Vedno mislim na onostranost in podrejam svojo voljo Gospodu, da odloči, ali me održi tukaj ali pa me pokliče k sebi.
V	teh in podobnih izjavah je izražena velika modrost. Spodbujajo nas k posnemanju.
Mrs. Albina Novak, Supreme Secretary, was guest of honor along with the members from La Salle. Mrs. Mary Cenkar was named Mother of the Year and Mrs. Joyce Fulara, the best worker.
A fitting memorial and narration read by Mrs. Josephine Schmidt and sung by Mrs. Prances Gorišek for the 20 deceased members of our branch. The “Eh, Compari” Band and organ selctions comprised the musical entertainment.
The chairman, Mrs. Rose Ann Prey, along with all the women who worked with her are to be commended for the way the celebration was carried out. From the moment we stepped into the gaily decorated hall until we left several hours later, we knew it took the work of women like our chairman and others who helped to make the party, as well as the last 25 years a success. May we who were there, enjoy the growth of Br. 89 for 25 more years at least!

No. 91, Oakmont, Pa. Our branch mourns the death of our sister, Ni-colina Connochio, who passed away the morning of May 4th. Her family suffered a double loss that day as her husband, Anton, followed her in death later in the evening. We extend our condolences to the relatives and friends. May this dear couple, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Connochio, rest in eternal peace.

No. 92, Crested Butte, Colo. Hostesses for our May meeting, held in the basement hall of Queen of All Saints Church were Frances Pogorelz and Pauline Stajduliar. We have done well in our 50-50 club! Mrs. Louise Guer-rieri was the lucky one! The jack-pot amounted to $54.25.
In June, our meeting was at the regular time and place. We were very happy to have with us Mrs. Katherine Starika, one of our members who now resides in Colorado Springs. Do come again, Kay. June Krizmanicli was a guest; how about becoming a member, June?
Hostesses were Rose Carricato and Aurelia Welch. We also chose the delegate from our branch to the Colo. State Convention — who happens to be yours truly. Alternate is Aurelia Welch. Plans were discussed as to
who and how we will go to Canon City for the convention. There will be at least 15 ladies from our branch.
Plans and construction of the new chapel at the cemetery are progressing nicely. Perhaps by the fourth of July the chapel will be finished. It will be nice to have that lovely altar from the old St. Patrick’s church out there.
Several new houses have been built in town and once again, it seems like old times. Thank God the men are back at work again.
Quite a celebration is planned for our fair city for July, 4th. We invited our former residents to come up and see us and visit with the old home town folks.
For my dear father who is very ill at the Community Hospital at Gunnison, your prayers are appreciated.
A special get-well to Kay Sterk, who had the misfortune of walking into some hot ashes and receiving second and third degree burns on her feet. Until next time — God bless you all.

Z dovoljenjem cerkvenega oblastva

Kuretino z golobi vred je od jeseni naprej oskrbovala Pavla. Prejšnja skrbnica, kaznjenka Koritnik, obsojena zavoljo dokajšnjega primanjkljaja v blagajni pošte, ki jo je bila upravljala, je tik pred prvim snegom izrabila precejšno svobodo, katere je bila deležna, in je pobegnila.
V	dolini se je sneg komaj dobro pokazal, v gorah ga je padlo nad koleno. Pobegnjenko so iskali orožniki na vse strani, pa je nikjer niso mogli Izslediti. Že so domnevali, da je skočila v Savo. V kalni vodi seveda niso mogli dognati, ali je res ali ne. Izkazalo pa se je vse drugače. Koritnik smrti sama ni iskala, zašla je pa prav blizu nje.
V	Begunjščico je kot gost prišel na lov Herman Winkel-mayer. Lovec Andrej ga je bil sit, koj ko ga je zagledal. Streljal je na vse, kar je migalo. Zadeti pa ni znal prav. Andrej je škripal z zobmi, povedati pa ni smel, kar bi bil rad. Bo že kako prav, sl je mislil. Vsaka reč se unese in se boš ti tudi.
Nebo se je nevarno pooblačilo. Andrej je svetoval gostu, da bi odšla v dolino. Winkelmayer ga je ozmerjal z bo-jazlivcem. Hotel je kljub neugodnemu vremenu še ostati.
Do kože premočenega in vsega premraženega je Andrej pripeljal Winkelmajerja v Begunje in se ga znebil. Vse bi bilo prav, da mu ni Winkelmayer domov grede zastrelil na Planici srne, za katero sta pritekla dva zdrava srnjačka.
Težko je čakal lovec, da se je spet zjasnilo. S krpljami na oprtniku se je odpravil v Begunjščico. Ugotovil je, da zastreljena srna spet vodi svoj spodrastek. Winkelmayer-jev strel jo je prejel samo v mehko. Razgledal se je še malo naokrog in se močno začudil na pol zametenim stopinjam, na katere je naletel. NI sl jih znal razložiti. Previdno je tipal za njimi in že od daleč videl, da so obstale pod košato smreko. Skoraj hkrati je opazil pod nizko viseilmd, zasneženimi vejami konec krila, kakršna so nosile samo kaznjenke v graščini. Koj se mu je zazdelo, kaj se je bilo dogodilo. Pohitel je. S krpljami na nogah se ni še nikoli tako široko prestopal kakor tokrat.
Andrej je otresel sneg z gostih smrekovih vej. Olajšane mokrega bremena so se same od sebe vzdignile dokaj visoko. Ženska pod njimi se ni ganila. Lovec jo je prijel za roko. Začutil je, da pobegla kaznjenka ni še otrpnila, da pa že ugaša življenje v njej. Urno se je lotil dela. Sezul ji je premočene čevlje in nogavice, jo odpel čez pas in pod vratom in jo pričel drgniti s snegom. Začudeno jo gledala lovca, si popravila obleko na prsih In tiho vprašala: “Kje pa sem?"
‘‘Nazaj v življenje se vračaš.” Andrej je ponudil premrli kaznjenki žganja, jo spet obul in odvedel v kočo. Zakuril je, da se je Koritnik ogrela in za silo posušila. Tudi nasitil jo je, sam pa je ostal lačen. Vzel je bil le malo prehrane s sabo.
Pobegla kaznjenka je sama od sebe začela pripovedovati lovcu, zakaj je zaprta. Da je res poneverila denar, je priznala, pa ga je zase le malo porabila. Poslala ga je fantu, ki da študira v Gradcu in se z revščino otepa. Pa ga ni maral sprejeti. “Prav je imel, če je res, kar pripoveduješ,” si je mislil Andrej, reči pa ni maral nič. Sedaj pa da je njen fant od pomanjkanja zbolel, kakor je zvedela naskrivaj za zidovje kaznilnice, je hlipaje pripovedovala Koritnik, ona pa ima še vedno skrit denar zanj. Mora priti do njega, da ga reši, če ne, ga pa hoče vsaj videti še, preden umrje. Teta na Koroškem ji pomore naprej v Gradec. Bila bi že davno pri njej, da ni zapadel sneg On, Andrej, ki je fant kakor malo takih in Izveden lovec, naj jo prepelje čez gore. Da ga bogato nagradi, je oblju-bovala.
“Hm,” je spregovoril Andrej, “če tvegaš danes pot čez gore, te ne bo nikoli vzel ne tisti tvoj fant, o katerem inl nekaj natvezaš, pa tudi nihče drugi nikoli ne.”
“Kako da ne?’’ je bila Koritnik užaljena..
“Ker bi te še danes vzel plaz.” Andrej se je zasmejal.
Kaznjenka je za hip osupnila, pa koj spet pričela moledovati, naj jo lovec sprevede na ljubeljsko cesto.
"Saj nisem na glavo padel.” je odločno odrekel Andrej: “Sicer si pa sama rekla, da tvoj fant denarja ni maral sprejeti.”
■‘BI ga že poprosila, da bi sl opomogel z njim.”
“Je pa dokaj bolj prav, če umrje, kakor da bi postal doktor za ukradeni denar.” Andrej se je pričel pripravljati na povratek.
"Oškodovana je bila država, ki ima dovolj, in se nikomur nič ne pozna." Kaznjenka je še vedno upala, da pregovori lovca.
"Vseeno,” je zarežal Andrej. “Kritja je kr A j a.”
GOLDEN JUBILARIANS HONORED
Three members of Branch 85 were guests of honor at a banquet on May 12th. They are sisters Frances Siska, Mary Kuhar and Theresa Grilc. They are 6een here with other jubilarians of DePue, III. (See branch report.)
“Tl boš kriv njegove smrti.” Koritnik je zajokala.
“Naj kar bom. Zavoljo tebe in za tistega tvojega namišljenega fanta mi sveti Peter ne bo zapiral nebeških duri.”
Andrej je pričel priganjati. Koritnik pa nikakor ni marala nazaj v kaznilnico. Lovec se je kmalu naveličal prigovarjati. Zagrozil je, če noče zlepa z njim, jo priveže k tramu, da spet ne zaide v mraz, in bodo prišli orožniki ponjo. Oponesla mu je, da je grd in izdajalski. Andrej je vzrojil: “Koza neumna! Mar misliš, da sem te izkopal izpod snega, da bi si sedaj nakopal tvoje prismojeno zgrešeno življenje na svojo vest.”
Koritnik se je lovčeve grožnje ustrašila. Kakor pohlevna ovca mu je sledila po gazi v dolino. Med potjo je priznala, da si je povest o fantu res izmislila. Hotela je le s prikritim denarjem pobegniti v Ameriko. Pa sedaj uvidi, da bi brez Andrejeve pomoči niti do kaznilnice ne mogla več priti. Odkritosrčno se mu je zahvaljevala. Lovec ji je pa začel pripovedovati, da jo je prav za prav rešil le pobi-jalski Winkelmayer. Saj drugače bi v takem vremenu on ne bil gazil v Begunjščico.
“Winkelmayer ni bil nikoli nič prida,” je posegla v besedo Koritnik.
Andrej se je začudil, kako da ga pozna. Pa ni maral spraševati. Vrag poznaj taka znanja! Morebiti sta bila z žensko celo zmenjena, da se snideta v Begunjščici. Za naprej je molčal in bil vesel, da se je pobegnjenke pri graščinskih hlevih znebil. Imel je občutek, kakor bi bil ves popoldan vodil za sabo na vrvici privezano lisico. Še dobro, da ga ni popadla.
Lovec Andrej seveda ni bil tiho. Ne toliko zavoljo kaznjenke, kakor zavoljo Winkelmayerja, ki se mu je bil za vselej zameril. Zdelo se mu je, da se maščuje za neotesanosti, katere je moral prestajati pred njim. Rekel sicer ni nič, ni pa nikoli pozabil namigniti, da utegne biti pri pobegu kaznjenke udeležen tudi Winkelmayer. Lovčevo pripovedovanje se je razlezlo daleč naokrog. Zvedela je sodnija. Pritihotapilo se je celo skozi debelo zidovje kaznilnice do ušes kaznjenk. Še preden je Koritnik prestala samotno celico, jo je sodišče znova zaslišalo. Zagovorila se je in se izdala, da ima res Herman shranjene poneverjene tisočake.
Oblast je napravila pri Winkelmayerja preiskavo. Delal se je hudo užaljenega. Roka postave mu je pa iz oprtnika, katerega je nosil na lovu v Begunjščici, potegnila skrbno zvito celotno žensko obleko s čevlji in klobukom vred. Prebledel je in se vdal. Za pobeg sta se s Koritnik dogovorila s pisemčki, ki jih je bil prenašal berač Tajček. Znal jih je pretlhotapljati, kadar je čakal na hrano na porti in so zunaj zaposlene kaznjenke hodile h kosilu ali od kosila. Namesto v Ameriko se je Winkelmayer preselil v zapore v Gradiški. Nihče mu ni bolj privoščil kakor lovec Andrej. Iz Koritnik so se pa pričele kaznjenke norčevati. Pa je znala prevejanka zaobrniti žela proti Pavli Andrej-čičevi, češ da se tudi ona samo hlini in da vodi nune za nos, kakor jih je znala ona sama.
Kaznjenke so si vso zimo namigovale, da bo Pavla na pomlad pobegnila Najbolj strupen jezik je imela Lovšin Včeraj je med odmorom zasikala v Pavlo: “Pri katerem ljubčku imaš pa ti shranjene nakradene tisočake?”
Še preden je Pavla vprašanje dobro razumela, je Lov-šinki že odgovorila ciganka Kati: “Lažnivka!” Hkrati jo je udarila po ustih, da se je kaznjenki Lovšin pocedila kri. Besna je planila v ciganko in jo z obema rokama zagrabila za lase. Za Kati bi se bilo slabo izteklo, da je ni rešila Zemljak. Za kazen sta morali obe, Debelarič in Lovšin, v temnico.
Pavla vso noč ni zatisnila očesa. Dramila jo je misel, da vsakomur, ki njo vzljubi, prinaša nesrečo. Res da za vsega hudega vajeno Kati samotna celica ni tako grozna kakor za njo samo, pa vendar —.
Z nekaj periščl slabega žita v privihnjenem predpasniku je Pavla ob url. kakor zadnji' čase vsak dan, prišla pod
NASE POROČEVALKE IZ WISCONSINA
Ob priliki drž. konvencije za Wis., ki se je vršila 5. maja v Milwaukee, je urednica povabila Zarjine poročevalke raznih podr. iz Wis., da so se slikale z Marie Prisland, ustanoviteljico ter Mrs. Rose Kraemer, drž. predsednico.
golobnjak. Zahrumele so perutnice in Pavlo je obkrožila jata golobov. Vrgla jim je zrnja. Spustili so se na tla in hiteli pobirat natrošeno žito. Bela golobica pa ji je sedla na ramo in čakala, da se bo smela nazobati iz njene roke. Pavla je danes kakor pozabila na svojo ljubljenko. Preveč živo je videla samo sebe na trgu svetega Marka.
Na ženitovanjskem potovanju sta se s Filipom prvo noč ustavila v BenetkaJi. Zjutraj se jima ni mudilo vstati. Po skrbno izbranem zajtrku jo je Filip odvedel, držeč jo pod roko, ogledovat največjo znamenitost Benetk, slovečo stolnico svetega Marka- Na trgu so ju obstopili vsiljivi ciceroni, vajeni izrabljati darežljlvost uovoporočenih parov.
S	kupol in stolpičev, z zidcev in od vsepovsod so se pričeli zletavati golobje, da tudi oni poterjajo svoj delež od mladih zakoncev. Preden se je Pavla dobro ovedela, ji je že nekdo potisnil v roko papirnato vrečico koruze. Vrgla jo je perišče med čakajoče golobe. Spopadli so se zanjo, kakor bi vedeli, da morajo pohiteti, ker bodo koj priletele še druge lačne jate. Hitro je Pavli pošla kupljena koruza. Pa je Filip medtem že poskrbel, da je še dolgo lahko krmila golobe svetega Marka, češ da oblak golobov, kj se je spreletaval nad novoporočencema, pomeni srečo in bla goslov v zakonu.
Bela golobica se je presedla Pavli z rame na roko. Pričela jo je krmiti iz dlani. Grede se je s pozabljeno in zapuščeno samičko pogovarjala. Da je kar ne bo mogla pogrešati, kadar odide iz Begunj, ji je pripovedovala. Da jo odkupi in vzame s sabo in ji preskrbi druga. Pavla si je dvignila golobico k licu in jo posvarila, naj pazi, da je ne doleti kaj hudega, ko se je navezala nanjo, obsojenko. In je potožila snežnobeli ptici, da jo prijateljica ciganka Kati zaradi nje v temnici, v strašni temnici, kjer v zadnji celici straši.
Bela golobica se je bila nazobala. Odletela je s Pavline roke nazaj na sleme hleva. Jata golobov se je pa še vedno prestopala po razhojenem pesku in pobirala zrnje, ki je bilo ostalo Pavlini ljubljenki. V soncu se jim je perje kovlnasto spreminjalo. Raz nabreklo popje v kronah kostanjev pa je zadišalo po pomladi.

ZVEZIN DAN V LEMONTU — 21. JULIJA
Gostiteljica podr. št. 2 iz Chicaga, vljudno vabi vse od blizu in daleč, da se udeležite letnega Zvezinega Dneva v Lemontu, 111., v nedeljo dne 21. julija.
Slovesna sv. maša bo pri Lurški votlini ob 10:30 dop., kosilo v Baragovem domu opoldne, je v oskrbi č. očetov frančiškanov. Popoldne bo piknik na prostem.
Tiste, ki boste prišle že v seboto, se bodo lahko udeležile procesije s svečkami okoli Blejskega otočka. Za prenočišča pišite: Slovenian Franciscan Fathers, 1400 Main St., Lemont, Illinois.
DRŽ. KONVENCIJA ZA ILL.-IND., — 25. AVG.
Podružnice Illinois-a in Indiane se bodo zbrale na drž. konvenciji v nedeljo dne 25. avgusta v sveto-štefanski dvorani v Chicagu, 111. Vse članice so vabljene k udeležbi. Program se bo pričel s sv, mašo v cerkvi Sv. Štefana, nato bo kosilo in zborovanje ob 2 uri pop.
Delegatinje podružnic morajo biti izvoljene na tej seji, da bodo vse podr. zastopane.
Vse gl. odbornice bodo navzoče in razprave se bodo vršile o načrtih za glavno konvencijo, ki se bo vršila v Maju 1964 v Chicagu.

Dne 1. junija sva se s soprogom odzvala povabilu na slavnost zlate poroke Mr. in Mrs. Lorene in Anna Bandi v Canon City, Colo. Da imata slavljenca mnogo prijateljev, je pokazala slovesnost na domu in pri sv. maši, katero je daroval njihov sin c. g. Bonaventura Bandi, ki je nastanjen kot Benedictine Father of Holy Cross Abbey v Canon City. V naši veseli družbi so bili tudi Mr. in Mrs. Jack Kostelic, Sr., Mrs. Louis Koste-lic in Mr. in Mrs. John Kukar. Vsi stari dobri prijatelji zlatoporočencev iz Pueblo, Colo. Mrs. Bandi je čl. podr. št. 66 in vsi njej in soprogu iskreno čestitamo z željami, da naj jim Bog še nadalje pošilja svoj blagoslov sreče ter še mnogo zadovoljnih in zdravih let.
Naša čla. Helen Mlklich se zelo trudi, da proda čimveč vstopnic za koncert Slovenskega okteta, ki pride iz Ljubljane in bo predstavil lepo petje dne 2. nov. v Pueblo, Colo. Ko pride Helen do vas, jo ne odslovite, ampak si kupite ticket za ta odlični slovenski koncert
Ses. Jesie Koshak se po operaciji, katero je srečno prestala, zdravi na domu. Tudi naša Mary Germ iz Grove, se zdravi v bolnišnici Corwin. Njen soprog John, bivši gl. preds. KSK Jednote, se po daljši in mučni bolezni, se kar dobro počuti. Bil Je hud udarec, da mu je sedaj še žena zbolela. Vsi želimo njima in vsem našim bolnikom, da jim nebeška Mati čimprej povrne ljubo zdravje.
Naj izrečem tudi toplo zahvalo Mr. John Starr za povabilo na proslavo, ko je bilo podeljeno častno odliko-vanje( Plaque) v priznanje 40 letnega tajnikovanja pri društvu sv. Jožefa, KSKJ, našega nad vse zaslužne-
ga in spoštovanega Mr. Johna Germa. Čestitke!
John Bajuk žaluje za bratom William Merhar, ki je še mlad umrl v San Francisco, Calif. — Frances Repar je umrl oče, Anton Močlnikar. Podlegel je srčni kapi. Njegova že pokojna žena Mary, je bila naša zvesta članica. — Umrl je tudi Ludvig Yoxey, ki zapušča več sorodnic, ki so naše članice. — Naj bo vsem pokojnim jamica tiha kotiček miru. Preostalim naše globoko sožalje!
Upam, da bodo novo prlstople članice nadomestile vrzeli tistih sester, ki so se za vedno ločile od nas ter šle po svoje plačilo v nebesih.

Mrs. Menart je b!1a Glavna direktorica mladinskih aktivnosti in tajnica podr. št. 7, Forest City,. Njen nenadni odhod je nas vse globoko pretresel, saj je imela komaj 55 let. S svojim nesebičnim delom za Zvezo, sl je spletla nevenljive zasluge za slovensko ženstvo v Ameriki.
Iskreno sožalje tudi Izrekamo družini Mrs. Mary Gornick iz Chisholm, Minn, ob bridki izgubi njenega sina, Johna Gornicka. Pokojni je bil brat naše gl. preds. Antonije Turek.

Št. 12. Milwaukee, Wis. — Vabim vse članice na sejo dne 18. septembra, ki se bo vršila točno ob 1 url popoldne v cerkveni dvorani. Pridite v velikem številu na to sejo, ker Je važna in moramo več nujnih vprašanj rešiti za dobrobit podružnice. Želeti bi bilo, da bi se članice redno udeleževale naših sej.

Št. 14. Euclid, Ohio. Poročilo mesečne seje. Na naši seji v prelepem mesecu maju, je bila velika udeležba. Vse članice so bile živahno razpoložene, kakor da bi se prebudile od dolge hude zime.
Sedaj imamo mnogo priprav za naš jesenski bazar, zato bi bilo res dobro, da bi še nadalje prihajale na seje v tako lepem številu. Na seji so bili razdeljeni članicam podzglavniki (po-jštri), da jih sestre izdelajo za bazar.
Bivša predsednica Tili Špehar in vsa njena družina je v juniju odpotovala v staro domovino. Želim jim srečno pot in vesel povratek.
Na seji smo tudi izrekle dobrodošlico novi članici Frances Grčar.
Naša častna mati leta Mrs. Turk je to leto prestala težko operacijo, zato se ni mogla udeležiti seje. Želimo ji, da bi kmalu ozdravela.
Zlati poročni jubilej sta slavila naša članica Mrs. Eržen in njen soprog Srečko. Vse jima želimo še mnogo srečnih in zadovoljnih let. Enako želimo tudi Mr. in Mrs. Tanko, ki bosta ob tem času tudi obhajala 41 let svoje poroke. Mrs. Tanko je že dolgo vrsto let naša članica.
Mrs. Josephine Čebulj je zadnji mesec postala tretjič stara mati, ko so pri sinu Franku in njegovi ženi Ivanki dobili sinčka Frankie-ja. Iskrene čestitke.
Naša častna mati je še vedno v bolnišnici in tudi na domu je več sester bolanih, prosim članice, da jih obiščete in molimo za njihovo ljubo zdravje, ki je največje bogastvo na svetu.
Ta večer smo tudi obhajale tri- mesečno godovanje in spetjem smo se poslovile od dveh sester, ki sta odpotovale v domovino Slovenijo na obisk: Mrs. Agata Zajc in Mrs. Ana Troha. Želimo jima prijetno bivanje in srečen povrtek.

Stefančič, potico, Mrs. Sustar, krofe, Mrs. Milavec tudi potico, ki je bila prodana v dobrobit cerkve v Hamiltonu, Kanada. (Kdor bi želel kaj darovati za to cerkev naj pošlje na ses. Milavec.)

Vse članice naše podružnice izrekamo iskreno zahvalo vsem, ki so se v tako veliku številu udeležili proslave 35 letnice ustanovitve našega društva. Prva zahvala velja Bogu in Mariji za lepo vreme, ki je samo vabilo, da je mnogo ljudi prišlo k sv. maši za žive in mrtve sestre, potem v dvorano na banket.
Prisrčna zahvala velja g. Father Francis Baraga, našemu duhovnemu svetovalcu za daritev sv. maše in za lepe čestitke k 35 letnici.
Posebna zahvala velja tudi g. Father Juliju Slapšaku za pričetek banketa z molitvijo in pozneje za tako lep govor v prid članic in za pohvalo dela naše podružnice. Vse smo bile njegovega govora res vesele.
Najlepša hvala glavni tajnici, Albini Novak, ki je prišla iz Chicaga na našo proslavo in napravila tako lep govor in čestitke.
Hvala glavni drž. predsednici Elli Starin za govor in dar. Srčna hvala Mrs. Angeli Arko za darilo. Hvala vsem podružnicam in članicam SŽZ, ki so se v tako lepem številu udeležile naše proslave. Zahvaljujemo se našim kuharicam Ana Kresovič in Thresi Simončič, ki so tako dobro nakuhale za banket v zadovoljstvo vseh. Srčna hvala našim delavkam, ki so pomagale in pridno delale, da je vse šlo v lepem redu, da je bilo veselje.
Še enkrat, prisrčna hvala vsem in vsakemu posebej, ki so na en alt drugi način pripomogli k tako krasno u-speli prireditvi.
Vsem bolnim članicam želimo ljubega zdravja. Naj vsem bolnim članicam Bog in Marija, skoraj ljubo zdravje podeli.
V	juliju in augustu ne bo sej, toda pridite v velikem številu na sejo v septembru in pripeljite kaj novih članic.

Št. 18, Cleveland, Ohio. — Vljudno vabim se članice, da se gotovo udeležite naše seje in zabave dne 9. julija v Knjižnici Slovenskega doma. Po seji bomo imele prosto zabavo, zato ste vabljene, da pripeljete s seboj svoje prijatelje, da se z nami pozabavajo s priljubljenimi igrami. — Zelo pogrešamo našo preds. Nettie Strukel, ki je na obisku domovine. Namestu-je jo naša podpreds. Albina Malovaslc. Preds. se bo vrnila v aug. in nam bo imela mnogo povedati na seji. — Pogrešamo tudi Mrs. Anna Morel, ki je zelo bolana. Upamo, da bo kmalu zopet prihajala na seje.

Št. 20. Jollet, Illinois. Naša seja v maju je bila dobro obiskana. Počastile smo naše matere podružnice in pa našo zaslužno mater leta, Mrs. Jennie Sprengel. Predsednica ji je pripela
Dne 4. maja sta Mr. in Mrs. Srečko Etržen, slavila 50 letnico zakonskega življenja. Ob 9 uri zjutraj so č. g. Fr Čelesnik brali sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Kristine in slavljencema podelili posebni blagoslov, jima podarili pozlačeni sv. rožni venec in imeli zelo lep nagovor o njunem življenju. Popoldne se je vršilo kosilo v Ludvik dvorani na Lindbergh Ave., katero so podarili hčerke in zetje: Olga Skodlar, Jennie Laurich in Christine Nestor. Navzočih je bilo nad 150 sorodnikov in prijateljev. Za ples je igrala godba vnuka Gregorja Nestor. Slavljenca imata 3 hčerke, 3 vnukinje in vnuka
šopek cvetlic, v govoru omenila njene zasluge in jo posadila na častno mesto poleg sebe. Tudi slikali smo se, kakor tudi vse prejšnje častne matere podr. Bil je lep popoldan, ki ne bo pozabljen.
Na seji sta bile predstavljene tudi dve sorodnice podpisane poročevalke: ga. Mili Koracin in Katja Koracin, ki sta pred dvema tednoma prišle iz Ljubljane sem na obisk. Obe sta dobro poznane pri mnogih naših članicah, saj je mnogo izmed njih našlo gostoljubnost v njihovi družini ter vso ljubeznivo pomoč ob priliki obiska. Tako sta na seji našle svoje stare znanke in prijateljice, da jima je bilo vse takoj domače.
Ga. Mili Koracin, je bila personalka v bolnišnici vse do njenega odhoda iz domovine, ko je vstopila v pokoj. Njena hčerka Katja bo pa zadnje leto hodila v višjo šolo v Ljubljani. Imajo
3	hčerke in vse dobre obvladajo angleščino, posebno Katja, ki tudi dobro piše angleško. Za njih je lahko potovati po Ameriki.
Kakor vsako leto smo naše matere počastile tudi s petjem in ga. Mili Koracin se je takoj pridružila, ker je tudi dobra pevka. Obema želim lepo in prijetno bivanje v Ameriki, da bi od-
ter 4 pravnuke. Jubilanta želita izreči njuno prisrčno zahvalo svojim hčerkam in zetom, ki so žrtvovali za vse to, kar so nam pripravili. Iskrena hvala vsem gostom, ki so se udeležili proslave in vsem za podarjena darila. Posebna zahvala podr. št. 14, Slov. Ženske Zveze za tako krasno darilo, kip Marije Brezmadežne, ki jima bo vedno v dragoceni spomin. Hvala članicam podružnice, ki so prišle na dom. Vsem in vsakemu posebej iskren Bog plačaj!

nesle kar najlepše vtise v domovino.
Naši popularni materi, ki tudi osebno pozna omenjene iz Ljubljane, pa želimo zdravja, da bi bila še mnogo let med nami korajžna in vesela.
Nenadoma je 20. maja umrla članica Josephine Kochevar, rojena je bila 15. aug. 1887. v St. Vidu na Dolenskem. Pokojna je bila dobro poznana med nami. Spadala je k raznim organizacijam. Imela je 10 otrok, 5 sinov in 5 hčera. Za njo žaluje, poleg otrok njen soprog Frank, ki je blagajnik pri dr. Sv. Jožefa in več vnukov. Pokopana je bila na farnem pokopališču Sv. Jožefa.
Članica Mrs. Kolar iz Raub St. je izgubila sestro Frances Cinderle. Članica Ana Savol je pa izgubila tasta (l'ather-in-law), Joseph Savol. Vsem pokojnim naj sveti večna luč, žalujočim družinam pa naše sožalje.
(Nadaljevanje) V marcu sta ležale na mrtvaškem odru kar dve naše članice in sicer Anna Wardjan stara 85 let, rojena v Črnomlju 25. julija, 1875. V Zvezo je pristopila 1928, priporočena po Agnes Vraničar. Pokojno Anne se bomo rade spominjale, ker je večkrat sešila kako reč za podr. dokler je še dobro videla. Zadnja leta je bila slepa, da si ravno
je bila na operaciji za očesa; ležala je tudi zadnja leta,tako da je bila velika reva. Imela je svoj dom v Jo-lietu na Wilcox, ker je potrebovala postrežbo je bila pri hčerki več let v Plainfield. Mož ji je umrl pred dolgimi leti. Spadala je k raznim organizacijam, ter je bila pred 35 leti blagajničarka dr. sv. Genovefe, KSKJ. Zapušča hčerko poročeno Marshall in pa sina. Pokojna je bila pokopana iz cerkve sv. Jožefa na farno pokopališče. Župnik iz Plainfielda je bil tudi navzoč pri pogrebni maši.
Isti čas, je ležala v istem prostoru tudi Margaret Želko, stara 83 let. Rojena je bila 2. nov. 1879, pristopila
6.	sept. 1928 priporočena po Katherine Dragovan. Njen rojstni kraj je bil Pod Zemelji, Slovenija. Mrs. Želko si je zlomila nogo, in bila le par tednov v bolnišnici ter umrla za plučnico. Bila je udova več let in tudi sin je pred njo šel v grob. Zapušča še dva sina in nekaj vnukov. Spadala je k raznim organizacijam.
Anna Ancel in njen soprog Peter sta obhajala zlato poroko, dne 28. aprila. Ta dan sta proslavila v krogu svoje družine v cerkvi pri sv. maši, nato pa na farnem parku. Naše čestitke.
Vsem članicam želim mnogo zdravja med počitnicami.

Št. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. Z veseljem poročam, da je naša majniška seja zelo lepo uspela. Prav lepa hvala velja s. Lah, ker nam je njen dobitek prinesel lep dobiček v blagajno. —
Čestitke ses. Mary Hočevar, ki je zopet postala stara mati, ko so pri sinu kupili hčerko. Vse želimo ljubega zdravja mladi mamici in vsem mnogo božjega blagoslova.
Hudo je bolan mož ses. Terezije Kožuh. Še vedno je bolana ses. Mary Rahne in ses. Stražišar. Vse priporočamo v molitev Mariji, da jim nakloni zdravje.
Ses. Dancul se prav lepo zahvali vsem, ki so darovale za veselico. Njej tudi me čestitamo, ko se bo njen sin poročil.
Ses. Plstel gre zopet v Florido. Tam je tudi ses. Viktorija Brekovič.
Celi svet žaluje za Svetim Očetom. Bog mu daj večni mir.
V	juliju in augustu ne bo sej, toda želim vsem ljubega zdravja, da se bomo v septembru vse vesele in zdrave zopet videle. Dobro bi tudi bilo, če bi poleti nabrale kaj novih članic.

Št. 23, Ely, Minn. Na naši majski seji je bila lepa udeležba. Predsednica je poročala o lepih zahvalah,, katere je prejela od naših boln;h članic, katere smo za Velikonoč obdarile s sadnimi košaricami, katerih so bile zelo vesele. Tajnica je poročala, da bo v septembru 35 letnica ustanovitve naše podružnice. Razmotrivale smo
o raznih predlogih glede proslave te obletnice in sklenjeno je bilo, da priredimo banket. Prihodnja seja bo v lepem mesecu augustu, zato prosim za veliko udeležbo, ker na tej seji bomo dokončno vse ukrenile kar je potrebno za proslavo obletnice. Po zaključku seje, smo pa pod vodstvom Miss Mary Huter zapele skupno nekaj pesmi, potem smo zasedle lepo pripravljene mize z okusnim prigrizkom in kavo. Počastili so nas s svojo navzočnostjo tudi naš duhovni vodja, Rev. Pr. Mihelčič.
Našo častno mater leta smo počastile z lepim šopkom cvetlic. Obdarovale smo tudi najstarejšo in najmlajšo mater, ter mater, ki ima največ otrok. Najbolj častno mesto je seveda zavzemala naša zalužna mati Mrs. Kapsch.
Kakor vsako leto, tako je tudi letos naredila Margie Shustar in darovala cake, katerega je dobila ena srečnih članic. Vse je bilo najlepše pripra-ljeno in izpeljano in pridnim članicam, ki vedno rade pomagajo ter načelnici večera, naši blagajničarki Miss Mary Shikonja velja iskrena hvala.
Končno smo se pozabavale s kartami	in	več	članic	je	bilo	srečnih,
ki so prejele dobitke.
Sožalje naši članici Mary Skradski kateri je umrl njen oče John Škulj.
Vsem bolnim sestram želim hitrega okrevanja. Vsem tudi vesele počitnice, doma, ali pa na potovanju.

Št.	24,	La	Salle,	III.	Ko	sem do-
bila majniško številko naše Zarje, je bila res tako lepa, mnogo zanimivega branja in krasnih slik, prevsem slike naših zaslužnih mater. Najprej sem pogledala, če je katera članica naše podružnice kaj napisala, toda žal ni bilo nič, čeprav vem, da jih več zna lepo	pisati.	Potem	pa	me	vprašajo
kako	to,	da	ni bilo	nič	od naše ma-
tere leta, toda kako jo bomo izvolile, ker ni bilo dovolj članic na seji, čeprav bi se vsaj enkrat na leto že lahko udeležile v velikem številu, da bi mogle kaj ukreniti, toda upam, da bomo prihodnje leto.
Pravijo, da nesreča nikoli ne počiva in tako se je zgodilo, da sem tako nesrečno padla na mojem domu, da sem si polomila rebra. Seveda stare kosti se zdravijo bolj počasi, zato sem še vedno pod zdravniško oskrbo. Želim se zahvaliti vsem prijateljicam za obiske, za telefonska voščila, za bodrilne karte In darila vsake vrste. Ne morem imenovati vsake posebej, ker bi vzelo preveč prostora, zato naj velja tem potem iskrena zahvala vsem. Lepa hvala Slovenian Ladies Club v Slo-venslcom domu za lepo darilo. Še enkrat lepa hvala vsem skupaj.
Več članic je bilo bolanih. V bolnišnici so se nahajale Matilda Svitek, Antolja Hefferle in naša blagajničarka, Mary Kastigar in Mary Savnik.
Iskreno sožalje izrekamo sestri
Jennie Krulc nad izgubo njenega sina, ki je umrl v najlepši moški dobi 50 let. Zapušča tudi ženo, hčer in sina, dalje brata in sestro ter starše Frank in Jennie Krulc. Sorodnikom naše globoko sožalje in pokojnemu pa naj bo ISbg dober plačnik.

Št. 32, Euclid, Ohio. Na majski seji je bilo lepo število članic in velja zahvala vsem, ki se zanimajo. Po seji smo imele prosto zabovo v počastitev materam in rojstnih dnevov. Št. 55, Girard, Ohio. Lepo število članic se je udeležilo majske seje in banketa “Mother-Daughter”. Bilo jih je 59. Imele smo lep program. Ses. Paulette Cernich, Lindy Juvančič, Patricia Robsel, Judy Juvančič in Susan Demass so prišle s petjem v procesiji k lepo okinčanemu kipu Matere Božje. Paulette Crnich je položila venec na Marijino glavo in njene tovarišice so pele pesem:	“O,
Mary We Crown Thee with Blossom Today ...” Podpredsednica Mrs. Barbara Umek je pozdravila navzoče in obdarila zaslužno mater leta, Mrs. Sophie Kren z lepim darom. Mrs. Mary Krstin je bila deležna darila navzočnosti. Dobitke so tudi dobile: Fanny Serca, Theresa Zajec, Sophie Kren, Mary Strauss, Vicki Penksa. Katherine Russ in Mary Mehalco. Zabavale so nas Paulette Cernich, Id je izvajala "tap dance” spremljala jo je Mrs. Nettie Juvančič na harmoniko. Patty Robsel pa je igrala na majhen organ, majske pesmi. Vse članice pa smo skupno prepevale pesmico iz knjižice, katere nam je pripravila, pri-ljubjena Miss Dorothy Gorenc in chair-lady, Mrs. Matilda Clgolle za ta večer.
Vso navzoče smo se podpisalo na "Get Well Card", katero smo poslale
sestri, Mrs. Anna Kren, katero smo pogrešale, saj ona se rada udeleži vsako prireditve, kakor tudi njena hčerka, Mrs. Anna Catone.
Ples ob zvokih harmonike sestre Juvančič, Je zaključil veseli večer.
Sej ne bomo imele julija in au-gusta. Na septemberski seji bomo pa imele" covered dish dinner”. Do takrat na veselo svidenje.

dan	za	Ohio.	Pri sv. maši v	cerkvi
Sv. Lovrenca ob 11:30 je bila velika udeležba. Navzoča je bila tudi gl. tajnica, Mrs. A. Novak. Vse smo bile vesele njenega obiska. Ob 2 uri pop. se je pričela seja. Mnogo se je razpravljalo tudi zaradi Zarje in nekatere so bile proti povišku 25c. Tudi jaz ne vidim rada, da se poviša ases-ment, toda moramo priznati, da se vse draži, papir in delavci, zato so tudi večji izdatki pri tiskanju Zarje.

Naš Zvezni dan, bi se imel vršiti 2. junija, toda iz več razlogov smo preložile do jeseni, o čemer bo še poročano v Zarji.
V	juniju je mnogo naših članic odpotovalo na obisk domovine Slovenije. Med njimi tudi naša gl. tajnica Mrs. Novak, ustanoviteljica, Mrs. Prisland in tudi jaz s svojo družino. Bog daj vsem ljubega zdravja in vesele počitnice ter srečno vrnitev v Ameriko.

Št. 77, Pittsburgh, Pa. Sezona zabav v naših dvoranah je začasno minila. Zdaj je prišel čas, ko se rajši zabavamo v prosti naravi, na deželi. Taki izleti so bolj privlačni, ker lahko trajajo ves dan.
Tudi letos bomo imele svoj letni piknik. Na glavni seji je bilo sklenjeno, da bomo imele letos ta izlet bolj v bližini in to na Riverview Park, tako zvani Chapel, dne 18. julija. To bo tretji četrtek v juliju. Zdaj menda ne bomo imele izgovora, da je predaleč, kajti to je samo par blokov od busov. V slučaju slabega vremena, bomo tudi preskrbljene, da bomo lahko pod streho. Pridite prav vse in pripeljite tudi svoje otroke člane naše podružnice.
Letos bo prvič v zgodovini naše podr., da bomo opustile 3 seje v poletnih mesecih, julija, augusta in sept. In prihodnja seja bo dne 10. oktobra. Lepo bi prosila, da plačate svoje prispevke, ker nekatere so že precej zaostale. Tudi na pikniku bom pobirala in rada bi odposlala na gl. urad v naprej, če bo le mogoče.

junija je več naših članic odpotovalo na obisk Evrope in predevsem prelepe rodne domovine Slovenije. Vse rade gremo pogledati svoje lepe rojstne kraje. O vseh, ki potujejo z menoj bom še poročala.
Naša podružnica ima novo podpredsednico Ivano Svet, ki tudi potuje z nami v stari kraj.
Sestra Fannie Holenšek, prejšnja podpredsednica in ustanoviteljica podružnice je bila bolana dalje časa, toda ko je njen komaj 45 letni sin John umrl, jo je strlo. Bila je dobra članica in smo jo vse rade imele. Zelo jo bomo pogrešale. Naj v miru počiva. Vsem članicam, ki so se v tako lepem številu udeležile molitve, sv. maše in pogreba, se zelo lepo zahvaljujem.
Z veseljem smo sprejele novo članico, Mrs. Stalcer. Pozdrav vsem članicam naše organizacije. Bog daj, da bi bile vse zdrave do svidenja.

Št. 100. Fontana, California — Cenjena gospa urednica: Namenila sem se napisati par vrstic v nam tako priljubljeno Zarjo, ker jo tako rada berem, posebno ko čitam dopise osebno poznanih sester.
Večkrat mi poletijo misli nazaj, kako lepo je bilo, ko smo se spoznale v Clevelandu in potem na konvenciji v Indianapolis. Ne morem pozabiti vaše dobre mame in stare mame, katero črna zemlja krije. Izrekam vam vsem skupaj globoko sožalje, njej pa naj ljubi Bog nakloni mirni počitek.
Prav globoko me je zadela vest o smrti, moje nepozabne prijateljice v Enuinclaw, Wash., Ivane Chacate. Čeprav sem vedela, da je bila zelo bolana, saj sem jo obiskala lansko jesen. Ne morem povedati kako je bila vesela mojega obiska, da so ji solze tekle po licu in že takrat jo je mučila bolezen.
Spomini mi uhajajo nazaj na leto 1935, ko smo ustanovile podr. št. 79. Ker je bil moj soprog zelo bolan, so zbrane žene rekle, da ga ne bomo motile, bomo pa kar na vrtu imele sejo. Zgodilo se je da smo na vrtu pod jablano ustanovile društvo. Zbralo se nas je 8. In tako je bil izvoljen prvi odbor: jaz za predsednico, Ivana Cha-cata za tajnico in Mary Polajnar za blagajničarko. Začele smo agitirati za nove članice in smo hitro napredovale, vpisale smo nad 60 članic.
Ker bi mi vzelo preveč prostora, da bi vse opisala, bom pa prosila članice podr., da naj se spominjajo pokojne v molitvah in katera bo obiskala njen grob, naj še za mene zmoli Oče naš za njeno dušo.
Ti pa, moja dobra prijateljica, počivaj v miru božjem, naj ti ljubi Bog da prostora med svojimi ovčicami, saj si zaslužila.
Naj še omenim, da sem bila zelo veselo presenečena, ko so me iz Wa-shingtona obiskale; Mrs. Mary Grady, Mrs. Julia Grady in njena hčerka Julia. Samo žal mi je bilo, ker so bile samo kratek čas.
Ko boste čitale te moje vrstice, bodite mi lepo pozdravljene in kaj kmalu me še pridite pogledati.
Poročam tudi, da naša podr. lepo napreduje, članice so zelo aktivne, škoda, da sem tako stara, ker bi rada kaj pomagala, pa mi bolezen ne dopušča.
Vreme pa smo imeli v Cal. prav neugodno, toda sedaj se je izboljšalo in bomo zopet šli na piknike in. v hribe se hladit.
Pošiljam gl. uradu in vsem podružnicam prav prisrčne pozdrave, naj vsem sonce sije.

CENJENO UREDNIŠTVO
vem, da boste iznenadeni, ko boste prejeli to pismo od moža, saj so vaši dopisi v Zarji samo od žena.
Priznati vam moram, da mi je vaše glasilo Zarja zelo všeč. Seveda me vaši dopisi ne zanimajo. Toliko rajši pa prebiram članke Mrs. Pris-land, ki tako izvrstno opisuje človeka in razmere, v katerih živi. Zanimivo piše o verskem življenju Rev. Okoren. Komaj pa vsak mesec čakam, da pre-čitam zanimivo povest “Ograd”, ki popisuje življenje kaznjenke Andrejčiče-ve. Povest me zanima iz več razlogov. Nekoč sem šel s svojo materjo mimo begunjske kaznilnice in sem videl mnogo kaznjenk, ki so delale na polju. Vprašal sem mater, kdo da so te ženske. Mati je samo odgovorila: "Bog se jih usmili.” Mogoče je bila tudi Andrejčič med njimi. Seveda je od tega dogodka minilo že 70 let, saj sem bil takrat še fantek. Je pa še drug razlog, zakaj me ta povest tako zelo zanima. Imel sem brata, ki je bil po nedolžnem v ječi. Celih 23 let je trpel zaradi umora, ki ga ni storil. Čez 23 let se je pravi morilec na smrtni postelji spovedal in priznal, da je on storil tisti umor, zaradi katerega je moj brat toliko let prebil v ječi. Seveda bi bila kaznjenka Andrejčič lahko sama sebi pomagala, da ne bi trpela po nedolžnem, moj brat pa sl ni mogel pomagati. Vsak mesec so ga na tisti dan, ko je bil oni človek umorjen, porinili v temnico, kjer je živel samo ob kruhu in vodi.
Tako vidite, se še danes spominjam na brata, ki je že dolgo let v grobu, in na njegovo po nedolžnem prestano trpljenje. Ni me sram povedati, da sem se zadnjič, ko sem to povest bral, bridko zjokal. Lep pozdrav!

Uocketing 100 miles above (lie Earth, they explored a hostile void from life-supporting spacecrafts which held every possible device to keep them alive.
Capsules weighing a ton enabled our astronauts to function as they would normally, by supplying oxygen and correct pressure during the ascent, orbit and intense heat of re-entry into the Barth's atmosphere.
Air-conditioning equipment, drinking water and cameras and rockets for in-flight maneuvering were included in a complicated maze of automatic systems and reserve systems designed lo work if primary devices failed.
Despite the fantastic degree of automation built into the spacecraft, an astronaut remains the captain of his ship. lie can override automatic de vices with manual controls.
Similarly, if capsule oxygen and pressurization are lost through malfunction or damage, he can fall back on his "personal capsule", tile alum-inized pressure suit, by dosing the l'aceplute on his helmet, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
As he does this, lie is immediately surrounded, inside his suit, with the same life-saving environment originally provided by the capsule. Wit.houi it. he would die in Id seconds.

Developed by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. four years ago as protective clothing for firefighters, the aluminum coating reflects up to 90 per cent of all radiant heat. The same coating on a glass-asbestos fabric is standard equipment for Air Korce crash crews.
These pressure suits represent a new dimension in custom tailoring. Working with NASA and the Navy,
H.	l'\ Goodrich Co. developed a one-piece, 20-pouml suit.
Over cotton underwear which has plastic spacer patches built in, the astronaut wears a double-walled pressure suit. Air flows on through it waist connection from a conditioning system. Stretch nylon yarn reinforces the joints of the suit at elbows and knees. Under test, the suit did not burst until subjected to inflation four times greater than that normally required.

Population of the barriada, where Miss Helm is working, is 86,000 Indians, who are respectful, cooperative and very much in need. She and most of the girls are social workers with the Instituto de Vivientdo, which Is connected with Alliance for Progress. The boys are working as architects and in construction, helping build and maintain homes.

Peace Corps personnel — 37 — are housed in an unfinished three-story building, where there is running water three hours a day and electricity but only one plumbing facility and no refrigeration.
Training has not been adequate in Miss Helm’s opinion. She was one of I he 59, who had four days of oriental ion of Peace Corps training programs in New York in mid-July, arrived in Puerto Rico on July 10 and went to Camp Hadley at Arecibo, a rain forest, where 2(i days were spent doing various activities — Spanish, swimming, rock climbing and hiking. There was a week of “community relations."

Bach day of work began at S a. m. and ended at 10" p. m., Monday through Saturday. The day was divided as follows:	Five	hours	of	Spanish	in-
struction, two of health and one hour devoted to each of the following: Latin American studies, Latin American culture, American government and communism.
At the end of the nine-week program, part of the group, which was reduced to f>r>, was able to converse in Spanish. Other courses varied in quality, ranging from good to very poor.
Peace Corps Personnel
Construction crew work gave Peace Corps personnel an idea of construction techniques. After two weeks of tlii' activity, health practices were observed at public health centers. She leels that the observation at these centers was not enough; that there should have been more practical experience. Five days after arrival in Peru, further orientation of what to do and how to live was given the group.
