Danes obhajamo praznik Kristusovega telesa in krvi. Mašna berila nam ne pripovedujejo
o ustanovitvi evharistije, ampak nam o evharistiji govorijo na druge načine. Prvo berilo govori o mani, ki je podoba evharistije. V drugem berilu Pavel govori o udeležbi pri Kristusovem telesu in krvi. Evangelij nam predstavi
zadnji del Jezusovega govora o kruhu življenja.
V drugem berilu Pavel spominja Korinčane,
da nam evharistija daje udeležbo pri Kristusovem telesu in krvi: »Mar blagoslovljeni kelih, ki
ga blagoslavljamo, ni udeležba pri Kristusovi
krvi? Mar kruh, ki ga lomimo, ni udeležba pri
Kristusovem telesu?« Odgovor je seveda pritrdilen: posvečeni kelih vsebuje
Kristusovo kri; posvečeni kruh nam daje udeležbo pri Kristusovem telesu.
Ta udeležba ni samo združenje vsakogar izmed nas z Jezusom, ampak je
tudi združenje članov občestva med seboj. Evharistija ni samo izvir ljubezni
do Boga, ampak tudi bratske ljubezni. Pavel pravi: »Ker je en kruh, smo mi,
ki nas je veliko, eno telo, ker smo vsi deležni enega kruha.« V tem deleženju
pri enem kruhu se uresničuje globoka edinost vseh vernih.
Prvo berilo nam govori o »mani«, to je o hrani, ki jo je Bog dal svojemu
ljudstvu, ko je šlo skozi puščavo in ni našlo potrebne hrane za življenje. Samo ime pomeni nekaj neznanega, ker v hebrejščini pomeni vprašanje: »Kaj
je to?» To je hrana, ki jo je Bog pripravil svojemu ljudstvu, ki jo je tako potrebovalo, da je šlo skozi puščavo. Mana je imela simboličen pomen. Ni bila
samo božji dar, bila je tudi razodetje: ljudstvu je hotela dati razumeti, »da
človek ne živi samo od kruha, kajti človek živi od vsega, kar prihaja iz
Gospodovih ust«. Mana je prihajala od Boga. Na neki način je prihajala iz
Gospodovih ust. Še pristneje pa prihaja iz Gospodovih ust njegova beseda,
njegova postava, njegovi ukazi. Vse to so izrazi njegove ljubezni in človeka
postavljajo na pot ljubezni.
Jezus je povzel prav ta stavek, da je v puščavi odgovoril skušnjavcu, ki
mu je predlagal, naj kamne spremeni v kruh: »Človek ne živi samo od kruha, ampak od vsake besede, ki prihaja iz Božjih ust« (Mt 4,4). Če hočemo
prav živeti, je torej najpomembnejša stvar poslušnost božji besedi, sprejeVESTNIK 2023 |

manje besede, ki razsvetljuje, nam kaže pot, po kateri
naj hodimo, in tudi moč, da po njej hodimo.
Evharistija je prava mana. V govoru po pomnožitvi
kruha Jezus pravi množici: »Ni vam Mojzes dal kruha iz
nebes, ampak moj Oče vam daje resnični kruh iz nebes.
Božji kruh je namreč tisti, ki prihaja iz nebes in daje
svetu življenje« (Jn 6,32-33). Potem pa nadaljuje: »Jaz sem
živi kruh, ki sem prišel iz nebes.« Judje tega ne razumejo:
»Kako nam more ta dati svoje meso jesti?» Ne razumejo,
da Jezus ne govori o svojem konkretnem mesu, ampak
napoveduje zakrament, ki je v resnici njegovo telo in
njegova kri, ki nam daje življenje.
Jezus ne govori o telesnem življenju ampak o življenju duše, ki za vedno združi človeka z Bogom: »Kdor je
moje meso in pije mojo kri, ima večno življenje.« Tukaj
ne gre za telesno življenje, ki se nujno konča, ampak za
večno življenje, ki se začne na zemlji in se po smrti nadaljuje v nebesih. yšogoj za takšno življenje je uživanje
Jezusovega telesa in krvi v evharistiji. Jezus ve, da nismo
čisti duhovi, ampak ljudje, ki živijo in se izražajo s pomočjo telesa, zato nam je hotel dati notranji stik s seboj po
udeležbi pri njegovem telesu in njegovi krvi.
Jezus pojasni, da ta zakrament prinaša popolno
združenje z njim. Mi prebivamo v Jezusu in Jezus v nas.
To sta dve razsežnosti evharistije. Ona nas uvaja v Kristusovo telo, prebivamo v njem, postanemo celice njegovega telesa. Po drugi strani on živi v nas, kakor pravi
Pavel: »Ne živim več jaz, ampak Kristus živi v meni.« To
je čudo evharistije, ki uresničuje popolno združenje v
ljubezni: mi sprejemamo vase Jezusa, hkrati pa smo
vključeni vanj. Na neki način se dogaja to, kar se dogaja
v našem odnosu do ozračja: mi smo v ozračju, hkrati pa
ga dihamo, to je vdihavamo zrak vase.
»Kakor je mene poslal živi Oče in jaz živim po Očetu,
tako bo tudi tisti, ki mene j, živel po meni.« Odnos z Jezusom je deleženje pri njegovem odnosu z Očetom. Jezus
živi po Očetu, svoje življenje dobiva od Očeta in vse svoje
življenje usmerja v Očetovo slavo. Po Evharistiji On prihaja v nas, da bi nam dal svoje življenje združenja z Očetom, po drugi strani pa naše življenje usmerja v Očetovo
slavo, to je za razodetje njegove ljubezni.
Evharistija je velik zaklad, je vir in vrh krščanskega
življenja, ker je največje razodetje Jezusove ljubezni do
nas. Ni nekaj splošnega, kar bi veljalo za vse ljudi, ampak je dejanje, v katerem Jezus vzpostavi oseben odnos z
vsakim izmed nas. Vse to nam daje veselje, nas spodbuja
k zahvali in daje polet vsemu našemu življenju.

In the earliest days, when they used to
gather for worship in houses, Christians loved
to decorate the rooms they used for worship.
The British Museum contains fine examples of
third- and fourth-century mosaics and frescoes from Roman houses depicting Christ and
his saints; glimpses of heaven, in places where
the first Christians in Britain gathered for
Mass. In the underground catacombs of Rome,
where faithful adults and children, martyrs
and saints were buried, there are paintings of
the good shepherd carrying his sheep, baptism, the Eucharist and scenes from the Bible,
as well as colourful floral designs. The Catacomb of Priscilla contains a large cubicle
known as the Greek Chapel. Its frescoes, from
the first half of the second century, are the
oldest surviving paintings of the Eucharist

read over the scripture readings and the words of a hymn,
making them our own. The priest enters and we stand together. This is the moment we become a community. In today’s Mass for Corpus Christi St Paul reminds us that “we
form a single body because we all have a share in this one
loaf”. Together we seek forgiveness and then join the angels
of Bethlehem singing “Glory to God in the highest”, peace to
people of goodwill. The Collect is prayed, so called because it
collects our individual prayers together. Then we listen to
God’s word, attentively and prayerfully. If we silently pray,
“What, Lord, do you want me to hear today?” he may have a
personal word for us. This is what happened to St Francis
when he heard the Gospel read one day in Assisi.

What Makes a Salesian – a Salesian?

“Have I been with you for so long a time and still
you do not know me?” Jesus said those words to St.
Philip in the gospel (Jn 14:9). When I was thinking
about what to write this week in The Don, I thought:
I wonder if most of my family, most of the kids here
at school and most of my friends really understand
what makes a Salesian a Salesian?
Just as every single person has unique gifts and
personality traits, so too do religious orders have
different styles, gifts and attitudes. They are called
charisms. A charism is a grace bestowed by God for
the building up of the Church. Don Bosco was given
one in his lifetime. Our Salesian charism is a sharing
of the Holy Spirit’s gift to Don Bosco – his special
gift/grace for the salvation of the souls of young
people, a holy and unique way of educating and
evangelizing.
Therefore, the men and women of the various
religious congregations should clearly manifest differences. They certainly should not be clones. All
religious orders are unique in their spirit, in their
spirituality, and in their style, method and mentality. There should be no such thing as a generic Catholic religious.
Let’s try to answer the question: What are some
of the main hallmarks of Salesians of Don Bosco?
What makes a Salesian – a Salesian?
Here are some clear characteristics that are part
of a Salesian’s makeup:
1. Salesians tell people about JESUS – He is the
way, the truth and the life! Salesians proclaim God’s
Word and God’s love in Jesus Christ. We speak the
language of Christ’s love in word and deed. Salesians are bold evangelizers.
There is no real meaning in life without Jesus.
There is no love without Jesus. There is no hope in
life without Jesus. There is no peace without Jesus.

The world needs Him. Our world speaks many languages of deceit especially to young people about
how they can be happy. Salesians speak and show
the love of Jesus with the language of their lives.
2. Salesians show the human face of Christ to
the world. WE KEEP IT REAL. Like Jesus, who thought
with a human mind, loved with a human heart and
worked with human hands and feet – we ‘get in
there’ in a real human way with young people. The
proclamation of the gospel is straightforward and
practical. There is a special effort made by Salesians
to break things down for young people in a way that
they can relate to Christ and to His church.
3. Salesians ACCOMPANY people in a relaxed
and joyful way. We are reasonable and patient as we
journey with the young. We understand where they
are coming from. It’s a gift that Don Bosco had and
that the Holy Spirit shares with us. Like Don Bosco,
we strive to be present and kind. Yes, we are serious
about holiness – and to call the young to it, we accompany them and make ourselves loved so that
the young will love God. For a Salesian to do this
mission well, he learns to joke, to play sports, to animate programs and projects that bring out young
people’s creativity and gifts. The best way to explain
it is by saying to all those we encounter and with
whom we relate, “I’ll walk with you” and “I’m on the
way too, you know, so let’s walk together.”
4. Salesians like to work… but we also like to

PRAY. It’s a daunting mission to help young people
to get to heaven and to be ready to live a full and
beautiful life. It takes hard work to save souls. Constantly providing opportunities, programs, projects,
building friendships, giving guidance – especially
motivating the young to live lives of faith. But the
work of the Lord is not done without first remembering the Lord of the work. Salesians hustle – organizing, lifting, going out to the young to be with
them – just like Don Bosco did. However, it’s not
just hard work that we are supposed to be noted
for. We are called to be pray-ers (i.e., mystics), men
filled with the Holy Spirit and deeply in love with
Christ. Salesians are contemplatives in action. Without that deep nourishing prayer life – we are not
effective like Don Bosco was. Salesians need a great
balance of work and prayer.
5. Salesians love the SACRAMENTS of the Holy
Eucharist and confession, and promote them often.
These two great ‘tools for holiness’ are definitely a
part of how a Salesian goes about saving souls.
6. Salesians go to MARY and invite everyone to
have devotion to Mary, particularly emphasizing her
role as Helper. She helps us out in big ways and in
small. She’s got our back. We keep close to her and
promote devotion to her. Salesians love Our Lady
and share the good news that she will be with each
of us, at every step of our life’s journey, helping us
out.
7. Salesians work hard to create a climate that’s
HAPPY AND HOLY. Like Don Bosco, we put a big
emphasis on creating an environment of goodness,
faith and fun in our schools, parishes and playgrounds. Good Christians and good citizens are
formed when ‘wise educators’ make sure that a
healthy, happy and holy environment surrounds the
young. Evil gets crowded out and doesn’t stand a
chance! Unlike many religious educators of his time
(1800’s), Don Bosco practiced a philosophy now
labeled the “The Preventive System” in which he

promoted faith and fun in a free environment where
kindness was the characteristic quality of the educator.
In conclusion, every religious order is supposed
to be different. Religious brothers, priests and sisters
of the various orders are not the same. Why? Because God gives founders of religious families
unique charisms. Their different styles, gifts and attitudes bring a flavor of gospel living that is unique,
refreshing and renewing.
Thank you, Lord, for giving Don Bosco his unique
spirit. I’m happy to be a Salesian and I’m happy to
have had this chance to highlight and even differentiate some aspects of our Salesian charism with you.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ – Homiletic Catechesis
In addition to preaching on the Lectionary
texts and reminding the faithful of Christ’s inestimable gift of his Body and Blood in the Sacrament
of the Eucharist – his real presence, it is fitting to
remind the faithful that actual participation in the
Eucharist by eating his Body and drinking his
Blood is the pledge of eternal life.
Such participation and Communion cannot be
accomplished by “virtual Mass”, but requires our
physical presence, with the community at Sunday
Mass.
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is also a fitting
occasion to provide a brief catechesis on how to
receive Holy Communion:
 Our communion with the Lord is also an expression of our communion with all those who have
gathered for the celebration, and indeed, with all
members of the Church. Therefore, the reception
of Holy Communion is not a personal devotion,
but an act of communion with the entire Body of
Christ, head and members.

 The hymn we sing during the Com-















munion Procession is “intended to express the spiritual communion of the
communicants by means of the unity of
their voices, to show gladness of heart,
and to bring out more clearly the communitarian character of the procession
to receive the Eucharist” (GIRM 86).
We are encouraged to sing the refrain
as we approach the minister.
When approaching the priest or minister, the communicant makes a simple
bow of the head (not a profound bow or
genuflection). Common gestures express common faith.
In Canada, the common posture for
receiving Communion is standing.

faith. Kneeling at this time expresses
one’s private devotion and can be dangerous for those coming to Communion next.
When receiving in the hand, the communicant extends both hands, palms
up, with one hand under the other (to
make a throne for the King) and upon
receiving the Sacred Host, responds:
“Amen”. The communicant immediately
consumes the Body of the Lord.
When receiving on the tongue, the
communicant after saying “Amen”
sticks out their tongue so that the priest
or minister can place the Body of Christ
on the tongue.
We do not genuflect to the altar or the
empty tabernacle after receiving Communion, since we have just consumed
the Body of the Lord.
After receiving Communion and returning to one’s place, it is fitting to join in
the singing of the Communion hymn.
After all have received Communion, it
is appropriate to observe a period of
silent prayer.

a little new to our parish, come out and meet other children your age and get ready for a week of
Crafts, Sports and a little culture!
