Miha JERŠEK: Minerali / Minerals Summary In the wider environs of Bled, certain minerals can be found that can be admired with the naked eye. The most characteristic among them is calcite. It occurs in karst caves, where constituting various stalactite forms, or in crystals that are restricted by crystal faces. On the Jelovica plateau, calcite crystals reaching even more than a metre in size have been found and are considered the largest crystals in Slovenia. Apart from calcite, tiny pyrite crystals can often be found. Exposed to air, they decompose into secondary iron hydroxides, generally known as limonite. And it was the very limonite in the form of crusty limonite ores and ironstones that was the most important ore for the extraction of iron. In a similar way, marcasite crystals turn into limonite. Their most important site is under Mt Prisojnik. In some places, gypsum crystals can also be found. The commonest among ornamental stones is jasper. At Rudnica, between the villages of Brod and Studor, bauxite ore began to be dug in 1868. It was named wocheinite (after Bohinj - Wochein). Let us also mention that relatively rich iron ore was dug in Savske jame near Jesenice as well, where iron is bound to the mineral siderite. In the vicinity of Tržič, cinnabarite HgS mercury ore was dug in the renowned Šentan mine, while in times past different copper minerals were also dug above Počivalnik. On Mt Begunjščica, a very important manganese mine used to function, which during the process of Jesenice steel making took care of its international fame.
