Literature Reviews Using AI rk Wednesday, 4 June 2025 • 12.00–14.00 Wo Hall 5 (Department of Economics) Workshop Facilitator: Dr Marco Balzano During the first part of the seminar, we will focus on methodological rigor in conducting systematic literature reviews, emphasizing the principles and pro- cesses that ensure transparency, replicability, and meaningful contribution to academic discourse. We will reflect on how a well-structured review begins with the clear definition of research questions and theoretical boundaries, guid- ing the inclusion and exclusion criteria that frame the study. Together, we will examine how the development of an effective search string is central to retriev- ing a relevant body of literature, requiring careful selection of keywords and Boolean operators to balance breadth and specificity. As part of our discussion, we will explore best practices for querying and selecting appropriate academic databases, particularly Scopus and Web of Science, to refine the scope of in- vestigation and ensure access to high-quality, peer-reviewed sources. Through practical examples, we will see how systematic screening and extraction al- low researchers to filter out irrelevant or redundant materials while maintaining methodological consistency. We will also analyze common pitfalls in literature reviews-such as selection bias, lack of coherence in synthesis, and misalign- ment between research questions and findings-and discuss strategies to miti- gate these challenges through a structured and iterative approach. A key theme of the seminar will be the role of AI in supporting literature reviews. We will ex- amine how AI-driven tools can facilitate various phases of the review process, from text mining and thematic clustering to the automated organization of arti- cles. Through interactive demonstrations, we will see how AI can enhance effi- ciency and accuracy in structuring and analyzing vast bodies of literature, help- ing researchers identify patterns, categorize insights, and generate structured narratives. However, throughout the discussion, we will critically assess the ex- tent to which AI should be integrated into academic workflows, emphasizing the researcher’s judgment in ensuring conceptual clarity and methodological soundness. Dr Marco Balzano is a Research Fellow in Management at the University of Tri- este, Italy. He holds a Double PhD in Management from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and SKEMA Business School. His primary research interests focus on business strategy and innovation management. His research has been pub- lished in several international journals, including California Management Re- view, International Journal of Management Reviews, and Technovation, among others. He also serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Small Business Man- agement. 12 Crafting a Theoretical Contribution: po AI as a Companion in Structuring Knowledge sh Wednesday, 4 June 2025 • 15.00–17.00 rk Hall 5 (Department of Economics) Wo Workshop Facilitator: Dr Marco Balzano Building on the foundation of a rigorous literature review, we will examine how the transition to theorization requires systematic coding and structured inter-pretation of the extracted knowledge. During the seminar, we will explore how identifying gaps in the literature is not merely about recognizing missing pieces but about understanding the conditions under which a meaningful theoretical contribution can emerge. We will reflect on how theorizing involves moving be-yond summary toward conceptual synthesis, developing insights that refine or extend existing frameworks. Throughout our discussion, we will consider the miner-prospector continuum as a guiding framework for literature reviews and theory development. We will see how the miner approach emphasizes a meticulous excavation of existing research, systematically organizing and syn-thesizing knowledge to uncover patterns and refine established perspectives. In contrast, the prospector takes a more exploratory stance, searching for new theoretical directions, bridging disconnected conversations, and introducing novel conceptual frameworks. Together, we will analyze when and how each of these orientations can be effectively applied to different research contexts. We will also engage with the role of qualitative coding in structuring data, cat-egorizing themes, and revealing patterns that inform theoretical development. During the session, we will explore both manual and AI-assisted approaches to coding, examining how generative AI tools and AI-driven content analysis sys-tems can provide structured ways to explore thematic networks and construct conceptual maps. Through interactive examples, we will discuss how AI can be used as a complementary tool to assist in pattern recognition and conceptual organization while ensuring that interpretative control remains in the hands of the researcher. Also here a key focus will be how AI can inspire rather than dic-tate the theorization process. We will reflect on how AI-generated insights can support scholars in crafting and refining core theoretical constructs, enhancing the coherence of conceptual models, and exploring novel linkages that might otherwise remain overlooked. The seminar will conclude with a broader discus-sion on the evolving role of AI in academic research, acknowledging that while theorization remains an inherently human-driven endeavor, AI can serve as a valuable companion in refining arguments, structuring knowledge, and reveal-ing new pathways for conceptual development. 13 The Economic Challenges of Europe in Uncertain Times Speech Thursday, 5 June 2025 • 12.15–13.30 Main Hall (University of Zadar) Keynote Speaker: Mr Lasse Michael Boehm e European Parliament ynote Head, Economic Governance and EMU Scrutiny Unit (EGOV), K Lasse Boehm is leading a team of economists pro- viding expertise and analysis for the European Par- liament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) on macro-economic, monetary and fiscal policy developments. The EGOV unit mon- itors the European Semester for economic policy coordination as well as euro area monetary policy, preparing the ECON committee’s monetary dia- logues with the European Central Bank and regu- lar dialogues with the European Commission and EU member states on the implementation and im- pact of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. In addition, the unit provides analyses on the state-of-play of the EU Banking Union, and assists the committee in scrutinising relevant EU-level institutions such as the Single Supervisory Mechanism. Lasse joined the European Parlia- ment in 2004. He holds an MPhil degree from St Antony’s College Oxford and a BA in Political Science from the University of Durham. Abstract. Faced with global uncertainty and new economic, political and secu- rity challenges, the European Union’s economic model is under strain. Exter- nally, a protectionist wave threatens the EU’s export-driven economy which is based on free trade and tightly-interwoven supply chains. Internally, the EU faces the need to adjust its operating modus from a long-term, regulatory, model built around the single market to a system able to react quickly and with adequate means to unexpected challenges. As part of the answer, the European Commission has proposed a renewed focus on competitiveness. Starting from what the EU has already done to react to the new challenges, the talk will ask the question what competitiveness means, what kind of governance questions the new challenges throw up for the European Union, and what their finan- cial implications are. Ultimately, addressing the economic challenges Europe is facing lead to fundamental institutional questions far beyond the realm of economic policy-making. Addressing these requires a broad economic, political and institutional reflection – including on the role and contribution of academia. 14 Toward Sustainable Tourism: ble A Strategic Approach Ta Thursday, 5 June 2025 • 15.00–16.30 Main Hall (University of Zadar) ound Moderator: Dr Tomislav Klarin R How can we manage tourism to achieve sustainable, responsible, and balanced outcomes? The goal is to capitalize on business opportunities and offer high value-added products and services, while reducing the sector’s reliance on a seasonal model, minimizing environmental impacts, and accounting for the effects of a changing climate. Diversification and innovation in tourism products and services could be key drivers in this transition. Such strategies have the potential to extend the tourism season, support ‘year-round tourism,’ and stimulate the creation of high-quality employment. In doing so, they contribute to a more resilient and inclusive regional economy. Experts from academia, government, and tourism industry will contribute their insights on the matters discussed above. This round table will bring together experts from academia, government, and the tourism industry, who will share their perspectives and experiences re-lated to these pressing challenges and opportunities. Their diverse backgrounds promise a dynamic and thought-provoking exchange.
