Fortitude and My Slovenian Beliefs
REV. MR. DAVID S. KUSHNER became the first Permanent Deacon from St. Mary’s Parish in the Collinwood section of Cleveland on Saturday, May 5 in St. John’s Cathedral. The Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 6 in St. Mary’s Church as witnessed by a full church of well wishers. Principal celebrant was Rev. John Kumse, pastor of St. Mary. Concelebrants were Rev. William Jerse, Rev. Stephen Spisak, and Rev. John Vrana. Lecrtors were Mrs. Sylvia Pisorn and Florian Osredkar. Servers were Matt Kushner, Paul Sedmak, Sam Kushner, Joe Novak and Andrej Mejak. Torch Bearers were Matthew Brinovec, Gabriela Cerer, Joe Cerer, Alex Clack, Rebecca Clack, Niko Marsic, Elizabeth Penko, and Mitch Powell. A large number of clergy was also in attendance.
After the Mass, a reception was held in the new St. Mary auditorium with a large table filled with various meats, salads, vegetables, and a huge cake in the form of a cross and Mass book. Another table displayed a fantastic variety of desserts. Rev. Mr. Kushner circulated throughout the afternoon thanking each of the over 300 guests for attending.

If a Slovenian asks another person to locate the country of Slovenia on a map, most likely that person will be unsuccessful. That their homeland is not well known upsets most Slovenians.
However, whenever encountering a Slovenian, let alone a whole group of them, you tend to find Slovenians not acting humble simply because we like to try to brag out loud to people in order to communicate that we exist. Even though we aren’t a huge nationality, we still find ways to impact groups of people. Mr. Howard, a teacher at St. Ignatius High School, recently said to me, “I was always trying to convince Slovenians that their country never even existed.” He, however, did not know that the likes of the Srsen, Lavrisha, Music, and Muhic families would not lose that fight. With this group of so called “full of yourself Slovenians,” one should not wonder how in the world I can categorize myself as a man of fortitude. My life has been filled with this idea of fortitude by being raised in the Slovenian community.
I was always surrounded by the constant murmur of foreign language whether it Was from attending a Slovenian parish like St. Vitus, the Slovenian country club called Pristava, or singing in Slovenian choral groups. I never really noticed or wondered why I was constantly going to these Slovenian functions or Masses, because
my parents had me going to these activities since I was a kid. It didn’t occur to me until sometime around this year that the reason that I have fortitude was because I have the Slovenian community constantly around me. With a reputation as hard working, the Slovenian emphasis many things that make us such a variegated group of people. We stress music, culture, religion, food, as well as our knowledge of fine wine. In due time I would then realize the importance of these things in the next stage of my life.
What seems to be the prime example of everything Slovenian, seems to lie in Pristava, a major Slovenian country club located outside of Cleveland. The Slovenians, after fleeing to the United States following World War II, wanted to have a place for their own, so they could gather together in an attempt to keep Slovenian traditions alive. The idea of finances did not give these hardworking immigrants any hesitation to stop this endeavor of making a place for all Slovenians to be able to share together.
Pinching here to build there, the Slovenians “were not cheap” as often joked by many Slovenians. In fact most Slovenians would like to classify themselves as frugal, especially in the case of buying Pristava. If it weren’t for the persistent people like Father Martelanc and Hinko Lobe, the locators of the site for Pristava, the idea of Pristava may never have been
accomplished, and the Slovenian society would not be as strong as it is today.
The Slovenians were not satisfied with just a place to recreate, they made sure it had a sense of support for the Catholic faith that Slovenians cherish. A chapel was erected as a memorial for all the Slovenians who were killed during the Communist invasion of Slovenia. Without practical persistence as well as spiritual fortitude, Slovenians may have lost its sense of faith as well as their identity.
After making it through 18 years of my life raised by the ideas of Slovenians, it seems that I am now ready to step up as a leader who will keep these wonderful traditions going. What else can I do to keep these traditions alive? I
got the idea that I could use my musical talents in order to bring more of the younger Slovenian crowd back to these events in hopes of being able to keep them coming to these Slovenian functions. I use my musical events in order to send my musical message. For starters I participate in concerts at the Slovenian National Home as well as in churches like St. Mary’s Church in Collinwood. For example, my last concert was organized by the Slovenian Consul Zvone Žigon at the Slovenian National Home.
The other goal of mine is to let the people realize that being a Slovenian can be a wonderful experience that you cannot live without. The third reason is getting all of
the Slovenians back to their original parishes again so they can remember how great having such a great church like St. Vitus or St. Mary’s.

Last Canadian American Home
Beginning May 14 the post office will no longer accept Canadian mail on our 2nd class postage permit. Therefore we will no longer send the American Home newspaper to Canada. Up to now we have been spending over $40 a year on each Canadian postage plus the cost of the paper, which is 70 cents an issue. We can no longer afford to absorb this loss.

Fragrance Touches the Soul

When young, and raising a family, I worked every day in a shop, sometimes 12 hours per day and many weeks I worked 6 and 7 days. I seldom saw the beauty of the seasons until a weekend ride with family. I yearned for retirement, like wishing my life away. Well, I grew out of that, and now wish to keep working, as my job has changed, from shop to cruising our beautiful countryside, from Columbus to Erie, PA.
The other day I had my wife, Therese, as my copilot, as I headed for Freeport and a few towns in between. I noticed the more south we went, the more green it became. Clean, fresh and alive is what I see as I drive our roads in Ohio. Vivid green, and vivid yellow cover the fields. It’s simply beautiful, even though the vivid yellow flowers are dandelions. I love dandelions in my salad bowl, but not in my yard, but in the farm fields I love the yellow contrast I see with the
green grass, as compared to the stark dead of our winter months. The ponds are free of ice and getting covered with green surface vegetation, while blossoms are budding out to be kissed by warm sunlight.
All of the above has a fragrance, a fragrance that touches the soul, a soul that sees, tastes and smells the beauty that is spring. What I couldn’t do in my youth, I am truly enjoying now, and enjoying every second of it, until my last breath, if possible. I can never overdo my gratitude to God for His blessings to me of the four seasons we do enjoy in our area, even winter, which is a prelude of the resurgence of life on earth we call spring.
I’m blessed with normal vision to enjoy the spring colors, nostrils that absorb the scent of the fragrant blossoms and skin that is brushed with fresh air streaming through my car windows as my car propels me through beautiful Ohio in this season that is full of life, color and hope for the harvest to come.
Ohio Genealogists Meet
The Ohio Chapter of the Slovenian Genealogy Society International (SGSI) will meet on Tuesday, May 15 at the Slovenian Recher Hall, 20713 Recher Avenue, Euclid, Ohio at 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Chris Dawson, former Curator for Urban and Industrial History for the Western Reserve Historical Society. His topic “Conducting Oral Histories,”
will provide insight into the benefits of recording individual life stories as well as serve as a prelude to the Chapter’s Oral History Project.

For example, I will begin asking people to begin coming to my concerts in order to draw them back into coming to the Slovenian community. One way I have been doing this is asking Mr. Arko, a reluctant participant of the Slovenian community, as well as being my English teacher, to come to my concerts. The best part of it is, Slovenians, die hard and even assimilated, will know the message I am trying to send. But will I have the courage to keep doing what is necessary to bring in a larger Slovenian crowd?
I think so. About a year ago I got the inspiration I needed to lead. In this way I knew it was time to step up to the Slovenian community. This defining moment came for me shortly at the wake of a man whom I really admired as a leader of this Slovenian community, Manon Kosem. He is a man who has done nothing but support the Slovenian community in as many ways as possible especially when it came to the Slovenian youth.
I was walking through the line to show my sympathy to
the entire Kosem family until I got to Mira Kosem, Marion’s wife.	«

Memorable Altar Society Convention
To all members that for one reason or another could not attend the Annual Altar Society Convention, you missed a truly memorable event.
It began with the prayer hour in front of the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with President Ivanka Matic leading the prayers which were ‘enhanced’ by the harmonious singing of the approximately 70 ladies in attendance.
The “New Members” namely, Mimi Režonja, Mary Kocjan, Pepca Roesmann, Milena Ferkul, Karoline Weir, and Ann Clemence were then inducted into the St. Vitus Altar Society. Each received the Society Badge that had been blessed by Fr. Božnar along with a red carnation that was presented by President Ivanka Matic. Father Božnar then closed the prayer hour with benediction.
We were also blessed with a lovely day, making our “walk” from the church to the auditorium a very pleasant one,' plus the fact that awaiting us was a truly grand reception, a
“feast to behold” prepared by members, hardworking crew, Nevia Avzlahar,, Mary Lunder, Ivanka Košir, and Maria Cugel.
Special thanks to “all” who in any way helped, or prepared, or donated Jo the feast. It was all delicious, scrumptious, tasty, and truly “enjoyed by all.”
St. Mary’s President Ann Nemec and Secretary Maria Lavrisha attended with their “entourage” of lovely ladies, along with two members from St. Christine’s. We were honored with your presence. Special thanks for attending.
There was a short meeting with minutes read by Maria Lavrisha, and a “recoup” of what had transpired throughout the past year by Ivanka. The floral center pieces were then raffled with several “lucky winners. ” Then it was time to bid farewell... until next year.

Slovenska Pristava board will have the dedication of the new hall on Memorial Day weekend.

On Sunday, May 27 the festivities will start with Mass at 12 noon followed by dedication and blessing of the new hall. Dinner will be served immediately with a cultural program following.

Our upcoming meeting is fast approaching - May 17, so members please circle that date on your calendar.
Following the meeting we will have our annual “Lucky Pick” raffle, which we all look forward to. Raffle tickets were distributed at our previous meeting. If you did not receive them, please call Sylvia Plymesser (216) 391-9453. Tickets are $1 each or a book of six for $5.00. Also, if you have not paid your dues, you can pay them at the meeting.
As for surprises, you are in for a treat, something differ-

First Picnic at SNPJ Farm
SNPJ lodge V Boj #53 from the Waterloo Hall in Cleveland invites you to the first picnic of the summer at SNPJ Farm on Heath Road in Kirtland, Ohio on Sunday, June 3. Music for your dancing and listening pleasure will be by Frank Moravcik Orchestra from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Dinners of roast beef, roast pork, and sausage made by the hard-working ladies and gentlemen of the kitchen will be served starting at a NEW time, 2 p.m,, rather than the old time of 1 p.m. This will be the schedule for the summer: dinners served starting at 2 p.m. The cost of our dinners will be $7, not including gate admission. Roast beef, sausage, and hot dog sandwiches, delicious donuts, and the usual liquid refreshments will also be available.
There are not very many places left where you can
spend a Slovenian Sunday afternoon, especially in early June. Come out to SNPJ Farm and have a good time.
Lodge V Boj #53 is sponsoring a bus to Slovenefest at the SNPJ Campsite in Enon Valley, PA on Saturday, July 14, leaving the Orr Arena in Euclid, about noon and leaving the Campsite about 9 p.m. These times are tentative as schedules from the Slovenefest have not been received as yet.
Slovenefest is one of the biggest summer Slovenian polka festivals in the country which attracts thousands of people to the three day program. The lodge is striving to make the cost of the bus, without gate admission, attractive to everyone, but we do not have our final cost figures as yet. Waterloo Hall Swiss Steak Dinner
On Wednesday, May 30, The dinner will include
the Slovenian Workmen’s Home Board of Directors and Auxiliary will hold a Swiss Steak Dinner. This event is being held to honor their 2007 Man of the Year Richard Zele and Gerri Tre-bets who is the 2007 Federation of Slovenian National Homes Woman of the Year. Gerri is also the current president of the Slovenian Workmen’s Home Board of Directors.
Swiss Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Vegetable, Salad, Bread and Butter, Dessert and Coffee. A limited number of tickets are available at $10.00 per person. No tickets will be sold that day at the door.
Dinner will be served from 4 until 7 p.m.
The Slovenian Workmen’s Home is located at 15335 Waterloo Road on the east side of Cleveland.

Another well attended meeting in April' Our HAPpy people do like to get together.
After Pledge of Allegiance, we paused to say silent farewell to our departed members and friends: Ed Kotar; Frank Mihevec, brother of Andy; Louis Pibernik; Mike Pipoly; and Stanley Rome. We lost Ed the day of our meeting, after suffering a heart attack and a series of strokes. May they all rest in peace in God's loving hand. Our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families on their loss.

Our Sergeaant-at-Arms Fran Kajfez reported 171 of us "Recycled Teenagers" present, and two guests. Joanne Kristoff came with her parents, Dorothy and John; and Marian Slejko was guest of Eddie Kenik. Marian is already on the waiting list -hope it won't be long 'til you are one of us! We have 137 honorary members, and 19 still waiting.
In case you are wondering how to achieve "honorary" status: you have to be a member in good standing for ten years, when you reach 81. Then it’s all just fun, with no more dues to worry about....
Matt Kajfez collected $5.00 in forgotten-badge fines. Thanks to our forgetful members, the treasury is growing nicely.

Rich is one of our newer members, and has jumped right in to help wherever he can. Anyone wishing to lend a hand in the kitchen, or at the bar, see the Rathies, they will be happy to have you.
We serenaded 15 April birthday celebrants. Andy Mihevec was the only one really bom on April 1st, but he's no fool! Many happy returns to all! No anniversaries were mentioned; the ones who have them in April must have been absent....
After the meeting, a group of HAPpy members went to Slovenian Home on Neff Rd., to entertain the residents. The musicians were Rich Cesen, accordion; Jim Kozel, piano; John Kozlevchar, accordion. My first memory is of my mother’s uncle, Louis Cimperman and his wife coming to visit us from Cleveland, Ohio, USA. They came to be my brother Albert’s Confirmation sponsors. This was in the mid-1930s and I remember they took a lot of pictures. I also remember the first time St. Nicholas came j to our home. With the bishop vestments, and the miter on his head, I thought him very impressive. There were two beautiful angels with him and devils to get you if you had been bad. St. Nicholas gave me a present and I don’t recall what it was, but I had recognized the ribbon on the present. It was cut from a piece of cloth my mom had at home.
I always liked playihg with my sister Ida as a kid. She had a friend her own age to play with, and they did not always want me around. They always pushed me out and I hated it when they did that.
I must mention my first day of school. The teacher’s j wife had baked cookies for us first graders. This was the
first coolde I had ever had. She made a good impression j on me- Every day after school, I had to help with the farm chores. I helped plant the potatoes, stock firewood, and make toothpicks. My dad cut pieces of wood to length and I would sharpen the ends for toothpicks. My Staramama took the toothpicks to the store and sold them. Then she would buy three pieces of candy for each of us three children.
One time my brother, sister and I went to confession.
On the way home we started to play and came home late.
We all got spanked, and I remember crying very hard. One winter, my father made skis for my brother Albert. I took the skis and went skiing one day when Albert was at church. When he came home and found out, he beat me up. Father put him over his Knee for that, and I was glad.
1	enjoyed going with my father when he went to see his cousins. They discussed the world’s political situation, and I loved to listen.
My father was a very reli-
gious man. We would walk three miles into the town of Rob to go to church, stopping on the way back at my uncle’s house for dinner. He never missed church or worked on a Sunday, except to feed the cows. He was politically conservative and loved his country. Later, during the communist revolution, my father was very outspoken in defending the church and his beliefs. Our neighbors, who were communists, actually said that after my father was killed everything would be okay.
On September 1, 1939, Hitler started World War II. Hitler took half of Poland and Stalin took the other half. Yugoslavia was attacked around Easter time in 1941 by Germany, Hungary, and Italy. In one week it was all over, or so we thought. Ljubljana and Dolenska, where we lived, were under Italian occupation. Gorenska, north from Ljubljana, was under Germany. Hitler and Stalin were allies at this time. Tire Partisans were saying that imperial England and America were Slovenia’s enemies. The Partisans sided with Hitler and Stalin until Hitler attacked Russia in June, 1941. They changed overnight to say that Germany was now the enemy, and that imperial England and America were their friends. However, the Partisan leaders said that if America and England tried to come up the Yugoslavian side of the Adriatic Sea, they would turn their guns on them. This was because the Reds would have no chance at winning the revolution if the Americans came in.
My father was working on the highway at the time. I was with him the day Partisans came from the woods and told my father and the other men to stop working because the revolution had started. One morning, as the family sat down to breakfast, father walked in from feeding the animals, looking very frightened. He said the Partisans had killed the neighbor family in the woods behind their house. The father, mother, and two sons had been shot down. When the mother did not die with the first shot, a pick was slammed into her head. My father’s two cousins had been forced to witness this crime. They were purposely brought by the Partisans to witness the murders, to help spread fear of resistance. In a neighboring village, a man was feeding his stock and was gunned down by the Partisans coming through the woods. The Partisans wanted to create fear in us, and they succeeded. Father was afraid to ileep in his own bed. Par-
tisans killed over one thousand people before there was any kind of resistance movement.
At this time Slovenia had a democratically elected government. In the 1938 election, several communists had been running for seats in the parliament. No one was elected. So now, in 1941, the communists started a revolution and demanded total authority. They made it clear that anyone who did not obey them would be executed. I remember a meeting held by communists in a local tavern. Everyone was forced at gunpoint to attend. One of the leaders jumped on a table with his gun drawn and said, “I don’t care how many of you are left, as long as you are good communists.”
One day, I was in the woods with my father and I remember his picking strawberries for me. All of a sudden, a noise like thunder came over us. I looked up and saw four big, black planes going toward our village. By the time we reached the village, everything seemed to be on fire. The Italians were firebombing the village. The smell of the sulfur from the bombs was terrible, but the fire was only where the bombs fell. Not one house was on fire.
The Italian military then came at us with heavy cannon. On this particular morning, I had not wanted to put my shoes on. I managed to get one shoe on when shells started going over our house;
I ran with the other shoe in my hand. The shells made scary sounds like “shoo, shoo.” Luckily, this time only one shell hit a building.

St. Vitus Slovenian 7 School News
St. Vitus Slovenian School will be having its 8th grade graduation on Sunday, May 20 at the 10:30 Mass. The graduates have successfully completed the course of study of the Slovenian language.

Monika Coffelt, Anthony Culkar, Audrey Dolenc, Michelle Graf, Jordan Kolarič, Michelle Kusold, and Alan Plassard. Congratulations to the graduates.

Art Guild Meets
Members of the Slovenian National Art Guild meets on Monday, May 21 at 6 p.m. in the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Ave., Euclid, Ohio. Annual pot luck and bingo event.
Members of the Art Guild attended two exhibits recently, “Diana, a Celebration,” Princess Diana at the Western Reserve Historical Society, and “Monet in Normandy,” at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Both exhibitions were excellent and enjoyed by everyone.
We hope to plan similar strips next year.
May is election month. Please attend and tell us if you are willing to run for any position.

Slovenia’s Tasty Diverse Cuisine
The gastronomic image of modem day Slovenia is based on the culture and encounter of the European Alpine, Mediterranean and Pannonian regions.
Centuries of social and historic development taking place at this junction have created specific types of culture and lifestyles, not in the sense of assimilation, but in the sense of creating a unique and original variety, including the culinary.
Slovenian cuisine is based on cereal, dairy products, meat (pork in particular), sea and freshwater fish, vegetable dishes, legumes and tubers, olives and the grapevine.
Contributions to Slovenia’s food heritage came from the rural population, and medieval lords, the bourgeoisie and monastic orders. Numerous culinary innovations were introduced during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. During the French occupation in the late 18th century the first Slovenian language cookbook was published by Valentin Vodnik.
The development of large tourist resorts in the second half of the 19th century -these include Bled, Rojaška Slatina, Dobrna, Portorož, and some existed even before these - also greatly contributed to the development of food culture. Slovenian cuisine, with its own range of unique and original features, has therefore been part of Central European food for centuries.
Between 1918 and 1945 we see culinary innovations with the introduction of some new victuals from the Balkan region. In the 1960s, Italian pizza culture began to spread.
The 1980s are marked by a process of discovering Slovenia’s own culinary and gastronomic heritage, reflected in the increased publication of cookbooks and their inclusion in restaurant menus (an example of this is the “Slow Food” movement). This has also led to the protection of geographical heritage and the traditional value • of some gastronomic specialties (e.g. Prekmurska gibanica, savinjski želodec, idrijski žlikrofi, kranjska medica, potica, kranjska klobasa, Belokranjska pogača and povitica, kočevski med, prleška tunka, etc) to the establishment of food enthusiast societies and to various food competitions (such as the contest for the title of best kranjska klobasa, the salami competition, etc.).
Modern-day Slovenia is discovering its gastronomic
heritage and gaining recognition in Europe through the adoption of foreign innovation. This is especially evident from the restaurants, the gostilne, which are Slovenia’s most identifiable food landmark and are typically based on family traditions.
A quality gastronomic ‘diagnosis’ of modern-day Slovenia can be drawn from the Slovenian Mediterranean (Istra, Kras, Brkini, the Vipavska Valley, Brda, Goriško, the Soča Valley) to northeastern Slovenia (Slovenske Gorice, Prlekija, Prekmurje, Haloze, Kozjansko, Štakerska).
In the middle of this is central Slovenia with Ljubljana and its surrounding region, where the highest quality of modem eating delights is offered at gostilne.
You are sure to enjoy the best (and also the healthiest) meal in the Slovenian Mediterranean. Dishes from the Kras region with their delightful vegetable combinations, meat sauces, pasta and the local prosciutto kraški pršut, complemented by a selection of wines including Teran, are a great way of experiencing the picturesque landscape and meeting the local people.
Braided Bread
\T/i oz. flour 3 oz. butter 2 eggs
2 3/5 oz. sugar 2 tsp. dry yeast pinch of salt
Melt the butter in milk; add sugar, salt, eggs and stir well. Mix with flour and yeast, and knead the dough until smooth. Cover and let it rise for 30 minutes. Knead the dough again and divide into three equal parts. Form three ropes and braid them together.
Put the bread onto a baking tin covered with baking paper, and let rise for another 20 minutes. Brush with beaten egg yolk and bake for 25 minutes at 200° (390°F).

Mix together in large bowl:
4 cups apples diced and peeled 2 cups white sugar
Add to the above:
2 beaten eggs
1	cup oil
Mix together and add to the above:
2	cups flour 1 tsp salt
1	Vi tsp soda
2	tsp cinnamon 2 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
Bake 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees.

In the springtime, there are the excellent egg omelets, or frtalje, which are the result of a wonderful combination of creativity and gastronomic resourcefulness.
Similar dishes can be found along the edge of Kras, in Istria and the coastal towns, where they are complemented by savory combinations of fish and other seafood seasoned with Mediterranean herbs and spices and the delicious Refosco and
Malvasia wines, which complete the culinary experience.
And if you are visiting that part of Slovenia, do not forget to visit the Soča Valley. In Kobarid and the surrounding region alone you will find a bounty of superior

(Continued from page 8) This region and its surroundings are home to different types of pogača, gibanica, kvasenica, zlevanka, posolonka, krapci, and also to a myriad of different types of bread, some of which are true masterpieces, braided and decorated with dough embellishments. Everywhere in Slovenia, the koline has a special significance. It involves the slaughter of a pig and the preparation of a large assortment of fresh, semi-cured, and cured meat products.
If you are visiting Koroška, you must try the niežerle, an excellent warm appetizer made If lungs and other ofal. In Gorenjska region, people still prepare culinary specialties such as ajdovi krapi or masounik. Another excellent dish is buckwheat bean or mushroom porridge.
Of course, the most identifiable food is the buckwheat žganci, seasoned with crack-fings and served with a side dish of sauerkraut or sour turnips.
When visiting Bled, do not forget to try the Bled cream cake or the kremšnita.
In Ljubljana, the old Gostilna Žabar, located on the city outskirts offers the bouse specialty of fried frogs’ legs. In the Dolenjska region, they prepare various binds of štruklji. Another regional delicacy of Dolenjska is matevž, served as a si(le dish or a stand alone dish made with beans and Potatoes.
The region of Bela Krajina ls famous for preparing roast lamb and suckling pigs, and across Slovenia, they prepare different kinds of soups, ^tews and tasty casseroles te8- jota and minestrone S°UP in the Primorska re-^0n, and bograč in Prekmurje.

Sift flour into a bowl, make a well in the center, j : crumble in yeast and stir it with two tablespoons of sugar, :
: four tablespoons of milk and some flour to make starter for i j the dough. Cover the bowl and leave it someplace warm j i allowing 15 minutes for the yeast to rise.
Then add the remaining sugar, milk, butter, eggs and : j salt. Mix everything and knead well until the dough leaves j j the bowl clean and you can see the bubbles. Cover and let j : rise for another 15 to 20 minutes.
Grease the baking tin. On a floured counter, roll the i j dough with a rolling pin to about 3/5”. Cut into squares, j i spoon jam on every piece, and wrap them up by joining the : j opposite comers of each square. Dip each bun on one side i • into butter to prevent them from sticking together. Then let • j them rise for about 10 minutes.	j

Baked Štruklji with Walnut Filling
Dough:
17 Vi oz. flour 2 eggs 2 tbsp. oil salt
1 tsp lemon juice 1 cup lukewarm water Filling:
3/5 cup heavy cream 6 oz. ground walnuts 1 tbsp breadcrumbs 1 egg
1 2/3 oz. melted butter 1 tbsp. rum lemon peel
To make the dough, mix all ingredients and knead until the dough is smooth and leaves the bowl clean. Form a loaf, oil it, cover and let it rest for 30 minutes. Roll the dough with a rolling pin on a floured table cloth and then stretch it with your hands.
To make the filling, mix all ingredients and spread over the dough, then roll it, slice it into 2/3” thick slices. Brush with beaten egg yolk and bake about 35 minutes at 200°C (390°F).

Slovenia’s Old Capital Shelters Secrets
^ LJUBLJANA, Slovenia -0- “When the world was ere-^ ated,” explains tour guide < Jan Oresic, “there w^s a little S bit of everything left over.” " Out of those remains came Slovenia.
There may be something to Oresic’s cosmology. Sandwiched between Italy, Croatia, Austria and Hungary, this tiny nation (Slovenia is less than half the size of Denmark) offers everything from snow-capped mountains to forests, plains and vineyards, with stunning lakes and a bit of Adriatic coastline thrown into the mix.
In the middle of it all is Ljubljana, a perfect base from which to visit the country and a remarkable destination in its own right. The city is compact and easily explored on foot or on its many bike paths. Its charms are immediately apparent but there is more there than meets the eye.
“Ljubljana has a 5,000-year history,” says Oresic. “You cannot see it all in a couple of hours.”
Oresic’s job is to help visitors appreciate the hidden details embedded in Ljubljana’s buildings and monuments. For example, there are countless statues and art nouveau details carved into and painted on the city’s masonry and oddities, such as the Roman tombstones that were discovered around town and built into the outside walls of the local cathedral.
Many structures have enormous window ledges extending over each floor. These date back to the time when the Austro-Hungarian Empire ruled Slovenia; the ledges were required to stop fires from spreading to rooftops.
Ljubljana owes much of its beauty to 20th century architect Jože Plečnik. Although he left his mark on Prague and Vienna, Plečnik’s finest works are in Ljubljana.
“There are many different Ljubljanas,” says Oresic, “baroque Ljubljana, art nouveau Ljubljana and Plečnik’s Ljubljana.”

verses were adopted as the country’s national anthem.
Prešeren seems to be staring off into the distance but follow his gaze across the square, and you’ll find that his eyes are locked forever on a carving of Julija Primic, a young woman for whom the poet had a disastrous, unrequited love.
Wandering through the Old Town, we cross the Three Bridges, one of Plečnik’s greatest masterpieces. Set across a bend in the Ljubljanica River, the bridges conjure up thoughts of Venice and give majestic views of the city.
One of Ljubljana’s gems is the Old Town, where the city stages historical reenactments for tourists. During the day, we see a parade of medieval royalty, a pair of retro-dressed policemen leading a shaggy criminal in leg irons, and a traditional Slovenian joust fought in boats along the river.
The bustling riverside cafes create an easygoing Mediterranean feel, while formally dressed trash collectors ensure that the streets are kept immaculate. At night, a younger crowd takes over the cafes and sets up impromptu outdoor parties with boom boxes and a bottle or two.

Designed by Plečnik in the 1940s, the complex offers local produce, much of it from massive vegetable gardens in the city’s Krakovo neighborhood, as well as cheese, baked goods, meat and flowers. It’s a .perfect place to stop for supplies for a picnic lunch in Tivoli Park in the south end of the city.
At the New Town Hall, visitors are greeted by a statue of Hercules battling a dragon before they enter a stunning courtyard dating from the 1830s. Carved on the walls and arches are double-headed eagles (an Austro-Hungarian symbol) and a detailed map of Ljubljana.
Incidents from the Slovenes’ difficult history are depicted on paintings throughout the building.
Oresic uses the paintings to explain how Ottoman invasions, mass expulsions by the Habsburgs, earthquakes and the suppression of peasant uprisings all conspired to keep Ljubljana from becoming a large European capital like Vienna.
Fortunately, Slovenia’s history has been more upbeat in recent years. Since its relatively peaceful exit from the Yugoslav federation in 1991, the country has prospered and joined the European Union in 2004.
In nearby Congress Square, the convoys of buses are a reminder that tourism is flourishing here.
While Ljubljana’s magnificent architecture and lively atmosphere have caused many to label it the “New Prague,” Oresic is quick to downplay the comparison.
“We are not Prague, and we are not interested in mass tourism.” The tour returns to the Old Town, leaving a free afternoon to explore Ljubljana’s remaining sites, including the 12* century Ljubljana Castle, which offers some fine views over the city.
The day ends with a stroll . through the quiet streets of Krakovo and a stop at Pri Skofu, one of the better restaurants in town, tucked away in a residential neighborhood and easily missed.
Like so many of Ljubljana’s treasures, the search makes the discovery all the
more rewarding.

A retired Slovenian couple went to breakfast at a restaurant where the “seniors special” was two eggs, bacon, hash brown potatoes and toast, all for $1.99.
“Sounds good,” the wife said. “But I don’t want the eggs.”
“Then I’ll have to charge you $2.49 for the breakfast because you’re ordering a la carte,” the waitress said.
“You mean I’d have to pay for not taking the eggs?” the woman asked incredulously.
“Yes,” said the waitress.
“I’ll take the special,” the Slovenian lady said.
“How do you want your eggs?”
“Raw and in the shell,” the woman said, “and give me a doggie bag to take them home.”

Vlada sc zanimala za deloval^« Slovenske obveščevalno-varaostae agencije
Posebna vladna komisija, ki je nedavno ocenila delovanje Slovenske obveščevalno-vamostne agencije oz. SOVE, je ugotovila, da je le-ta polnih osem let kršila zakon. Gradiva iz prejšnjih obdobij ni v celoti izročila pooblaščeni ustanovi, to je Arhivu Slovenije. Dalje, SOVA je imela moderno prenosno napravo za prisluškovanje prenosnim telefonom, ob tem tudi tajne prostore na Malem trgu 4, v središču Ljubljane.
Na dnevnem redu medijev je predlog za spremembo ustave, da bi mogli izseljenci-državljani voliti predstavnike v parlament
Javna občila poročajo o pobudi, da bi s spremembo slovenske ustave Slovencem v tujini omogočili imeti poslance v državnem zboru. O pobudi je za tisk spregovoril Boštjan Kocmur, sicer predsednik Izseljenskega društva Slovenije. Ta organizacija je namreč glavna pobudnica za predlog. Rekel je, “da je omenjeno pobudo -bolj kot opomin slovenski državi treba razumeti kot podporo suvereni pravici slovenskih državljanov, razseljenih po svetu, da so lahko voljeni oz. da lahko volijo takega poslanca, ki bo v slovenskem parlamentu zagovarjal njihove potrebe in interese.” Notranje ministrstvo slovenske vlade baje ima podatke, da živi v tujini okoli 60.000 slovenskih državljanov.
Pripadnikom Slovenske vojske naj bi znatno povečali plače
V obtoku je novi predlog zakona o službi v Slovenski vojski. Predlog je vlada sprejela, z njim nameravajo pripadnike vojske izločiti iz sistema javne uprave in jim določiti poseben status v državi. Zlasti naj bi vojaškim osebam povečali plače, ki so zdaj nizke ter zaradi njih mnogo vojakov zapušča to službo. Vojak v Slovenski vojski zasluži manj kot 500 evrov na mesec (ok. $675 US), pilot vojaškega letala pa okoli 800 evrov mesečno ($1080 US).
Blaginja prebivalstva narašča, a tudf revščine je še veliko
Gospodarska gibanja v Sloveniji so pretežno že dve leti ugodna, zaradi česar narašča tudi blaginja prebivalstva. Zaznati pa je tudi negativnosti. Revščina se je nekoliko zmanjšala, toda še vedno ostaja velik gospodarski, socialni in tudi politični problem. V marsikaterem podjetju so plače nizke, zato si posamezniki in njihove družine ne morejo kupiti dovolj živil in dobrin, ki jih je sicer v trgovinah v izobilju. Inflacija naj bi letos znašala le poldrag odstotek, vendar naraščajo cene prevozov, stroški izobraževanja, cene zdravil in nekaterih storitev, vse to pa negativno vpliva na raven življenja.
Tovarna sladkorja v Ormožu zaprli
V Ormožu so pred nedavnim zaprli tovarno sladkorja, edino v Sloveniji. Delovati je prenehala zaradi zahteve Evropske unije, ki spričo nasičenosti tržišča omejuje proizvodnjo sladkorja v državah-članicah. Brez dela je ostalo vseh 197 zaposlenih, ki pa so predvsem po zaslugi sindikata in njegovih prizadevanj prejeli dokaj visoke odpravnine, ' tako da si bodo lahko zagotovili novo zaposlitev. Poklicna prihodnost večine zaposlenih pa je odvisna od tega, ali bo na lokaciji nekdanje “cukerice” zrasla nova tovarna ali ne. Sicer bo večje število delavcev, predvsem proizvodnih, dobilo delo za določen čas pri razgradnji tovarne, ki bo trajala do konca 1. 2008 ali do začetka 2009.
Bivši hrvaški premier Ivica Račan umri
Ivica Račan, ki je bil hrvaški premier od leta 2000 do 2003, zadnji čas pa vodil opozicijo, je umrl za rakom na možganih dne 29. aprila, komaj tri tedne potem, ko so zdravniki ugotovili bolezen. Račana so hvalili za svojo demokratično držo, posebno v času po smrti prvega predsednika neodvisne Hrvaške Franja Tudmana. Zelo je želel pridružitev Hrvaške EU, tej politiki zagovaija tudi njegov naslednik, premier Ivo Sanader. Ivica Račan je bil ob smrti star 63 let.

Umrl je 67 let stari John J. Hočevar, sin Johna in Anne (r. Jakopič) Hočevar (oba že pok.), brat Anne Arhar in Josepha (I. pod-preds. KSKJ), stric in pra-stric. Pogreb je bil 7. maja v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Vida in pokopom na Vernih duš pokopališču. Družina bo hvaležna za darove v pokojnikov spomin župniji sv. Steven P. Piorkowski
Dne 3. maja je za rakom na možganih umrl 60 let stari Steven P. Piorkowski, ki je bil mnoga leta zelo aktiven v naselbini St. Clair, mož Roseanne, roj. Kirk, oče Jeff-a in Stevena, brat Stelle Konopka in Richarda, član in bivši poveljnik postaje svetoviških katoliških vojnih veteranov št. 1655 in tudi član Ameriške legije in VFW, služil v je ameriški vojni mornarici. Pogreb je bil 7. maja v oskrbi Fortunovega zavoda s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Basila v Brecks-villu, pokopan je bil 10. maja na Ohio Western Reserve National pokopališču v Rittmanu, O. Družina bo hvaležna za darove v pokojnikov spomin St. Basil Liturgical Fund, 8700 Brecks-ville Rd., Brecksville, OH 44141 ali St. Vitus Village, 6019 Lausche Ave., Cleveland, OH 44103.

Slov. dom za ostarele—
V petek, 18. maja, bo v Laurichevi sobi Slovenskega doma za ostarele na 18621 Neff Rd. letna seja. Registriranje se prične ob 7. uri zvečer, seja se prične ob 7.30. Pravico, do glasovanja imajo vsi, ki so v zadnjem letu darovali najmanj $25 tej ustanovi, sicer je seja odprta javnosti. Poleg poročil direktorjev zavoda bodo volitve direktoijev ter splošna razprava z vprašanji in odgovori.
Veleposlanik Žbogar tu—
Slovenski veleposlanik v ZDA dr. Samuel Žbogar se bo mudil v našem mestu prihodnji konec tedna. Sodeloval bo namreč v tkim. - Rite Aid Cleveland maraton, ki je sicer velika dobrodelna zadeva, gen. konzul dr. Zvone Žigon se bo pa omejil na 10 km. Maraton bo v nedeljo, 19. maja. Poleg tega se bo veleposlanik srečal z rojaki na raznih sprejemih oz. obiskih. Knltnrai vrtovi okradeni—
Pretekli konec tedna sta bila okradena oz. vandalizi-rana kulturna vrtova Madžarov in Slovakov. Zlikovci so odnesli bronasti kip iz obeh vrtov - tehtala sta vsak kakih 250 funtov pri Slovakih so pa kipa tudi poškodovali in ga pustili na tleh. Eden od slovaških kipov je kip duhovnika Štefana Furdeka, ki je igral veliko vlogo pri začetku prve slovenske župnije v mestu, sv. Vidu. Furdek je skrbel za slovenske vernike v času, ko še ni bilo tu slovenskega duhovnika. Tokrat slovenski kulturni vrt ni bil prizadet, v zadnjem času so pa to doživeli finski, poljski in ameriški kulturni vrt.

To bo na Slovenski pristavi v nedeljo, 27. maja. (Gl. str. 14 za podrobnosti.)
Graduacija in proslava—
Slovenska šola pri sv. Vidu bo imela graduacijo 20. maja. Letošnji absolventi so: Kati Bloom, Monika Cof-felt, Anthony Culkar, Audrey Dolenc, Michelle Graf, Jordan Kolarič, Michelle Ku-sold in Alan Plassard. Uspešno so končali tečaj slovenskega jezika. Diplome bodo prejeli po 10.30 dop. maši v cerkvi. Sledila' bo kratka akademija v šolski dvorani. Vsi lepo vabljeni, vsem absolventom in učencem pa prisrčne čestitke!

KOROTAN ŽIVI
Med najprijetnejšimi po- zbor tu in tam ni dose-javi vsakdanjega življenja, ' gel polne moči. so razni "sezonski”- Čude; Zapel pa nam je nekatere “znane” stvari, kot
ži, ko npr. ob koncu jeseni nenadoma znova za-cvete nek grm zadaj na vrtu, ali pa se razcvete v pozni zimi, ko sneg še leži po .travnikih in poljih.
Ti 'in -podobni občutki so me navdajali, ko je pred dnevi pevski zbor Korotan spet nastopil na odru Narodnega doma na St. Clairju. Mislim, da se ne motim, da se je številčno predstavil v domala enaki zasedbi, kot v časih, ko sta ga vodila Metod Milač in Franček Gorenšek.
Pa to je bil samo prvi, hipni, zunanji vtis, ki ga je človek dobil ob pogledu na pevce. Res je, to ni “mladinski” zbor: sive glave so se mešale med mladstnimi "frizurami”, ko pa je ta “mehanizem” spregovoril, je bilo takoj čuti nekaj novih, pa nadvse “interesantnih” glasov.
Toliko bolj, ker je bil letošnji program - ne vem ali namerno ali slučajno - usmerjen v slovensko regionalno zborovsko glasbo. Slišali smo melodije s Kranjske, Koroške, Primorske, daljne Rezije in Istre, za zaključek pa Avsenikov - Klic gora. Edino “klasično” noto je koncertu vložil “Te Deum”, v aranžmaju Sonje Poorman.
Predvsem so to pot -številčno in glasovno -prevladovala dekleta: moški glasovi so uspešno dodajali posebno “ozadje”, toda glavna moč zbora je bila le v ženskih glasovih.
Spričo tolikšnega števila novih pevcev - človek se ni mogel načuditi - se je čutila tudi rahla “omahljivost” zbora, če je to pravi izraz: pevci se še ne poznajo med seboj, še ne vedo, na koga v svoji legi se lahko zanesejo, da bo “potegnil", če se bo pojavil šibek trenutek in ta negotovost je morda doprinesla, da
je na primer “Zvonikarje-va”, Kramolčeva “Pesem o pomladi”, “Rože na vrtu" in slepčevo otožno “Le enkrat bi videl”. Novi, vsaj zame, sta bili "Polževa ženitev” in pa istrska “Dajte, dajte”... No, in zbor se je ob koncu res odzval temu pozivu ter navdušeno odpel Avsenikov “Klic gora”.
Kot v preteklosti, je Korotan tudi to pot nastopil v različnih “varijan-tah” - ženski zbor, moški zbor in celo - kar je bilo nekaj popolnoma novega: kot (mešan) “zborček”. V teh kombinacijah se je oglasilo kar nekaj novih pevcev, žal, po spominu ne morem enačiti imen z glasovi. Prav za te izstopajoče kombinacije namreč velja, da je bilo slišati mlade, sveže in zelo interesantne glasove.
Morda bi ob tem kazalo zapisati še kratko “režijsko” misel. Med temi “ločenimi” nastopi se je zbor “premikal” po odru pri odprtem zastorju. V bodoče bi morda kazalo take premike izvajati za zastorjem, medtem, ko bi napovedovalec(lka) opravil svoj prispevek pred zastorjem.
Korotan je na svoji dolgi življenjski poti v življenje slovenske skupnosti v Clevelandu dopri-našal prispevke različne veljave; bili so koncerti, ko je iz pesmi vrela mladost, bili so koncerti, ki jih je odlikovala izvedba, pa koncerti s posebnimi prispevki, bila so gostovanja v drugih mestih in bila so gostovanja v Domovini.
Letošnji koncert je izzvenel predvsem v znamenju svežine in v obetih za prihodnost. Kvaliteta zbora ostaja na doseženi, dostojni umetniški ravni, požrtvovalnost pevcev, ki jo vzdržujejo, pa zasluži

Pesem molka
Mara Cerar Hull je prvih dvajset let živela v Sloveniji, zdaj pa že petdeset let živi v Ameriki. Piše v angleščini in slovenščini. V raznih časopisih in revijah objavlja povesti, črtice, pesmi in novele. Lani je v slovenščini končala igro v treh dejanjih z naslovom Vrnitev.
Objavlja tudi članke in ocene dogajanj v slovenski skupnosti v Clevelandu in okolici. Obenem je urednica slovenskega dela časopisa Glasilo (Voice) Amerikanskega Slovenca, ki ga izdaja KSKJ v Jo-lietu (Illinois).
Pesem molka je tretja in zadnja knjiga njene knjižne trilogije Molk. Prva knjiga. Poletje molka, je izšla leta 1995, druga. Pot molka, leta 2002. Vse tri so izšle pri Celjski Mohorjevi družbi.
Prva knjiga je bila ob istem času napisana v angleščini in je pod naslovom Summer of Silence v publikaciji Electronic Media izšla leta 1999 v Ameriki.
Koncerti klavirskih mojstrov v Chicagu in New Yorku
Nastopila bosta Milko Lazar in Bojan Gorišek
Cleveland/New York - Priznana slovenska pianista Milko Lazar in Bojan Gorišek (“duo Gorišek-Lazar) bosta v organizaciji Misije Republike Slovenije pri Združenih narodih v New Yorku in Generalnega konzulata RS v Clevelandu nastopila na več pomembnih koncertih v ZDA.
18. maja ob 12. uri bosta koncertirala v kulturnem središču sredi Chicaga v okviru serije klavirskih koncertov v organizaciji Thomasa Zoellsa, predstavnika proizvajalca klavirjev znamke Fazziolli ter lastnika galerije in prodajalne teh klavirjev “Pianoforte Chicago, Inc.” - v sodelovanju z znano radijsko postajo WFMT. To pomeni, da bo. koncert, ki bo prenašan v živo, poslušalo okoli 45.000 ljubiteljev klasične glasbe. Ker je koncert zasnovan tako, da med eno in drugo skladbo glasbenika odgovarjata na vprašanja moderatorja, je to hkrati tudi odlična promocija za slovenska umetnika.
Zasluge za ta koncert gre pripisati chicaški Slovenki, profesorici klavirja na Chicago Institute of Art Lud-mili Lazar.
Drugi pomemben nastop bo 22. maja v avditoriju palače OZN, v počastitev 15-letnice sprejema Slovenije v Združene narode, temu koncertu pa bo naslednji dan sledil še koncert v znamenitem Klavierhausu, prav tako v New Yorku.
Oba umetnika imata za sabo izjemno bogat opus, znana sta po izvajanju skoraj izključno sodobne klavirske literature za dva klavirja, v veliki meri tudi del Milka Lazarja, člana dua. V ZDA sta doslej nastopala na koncertnih prizoriščih kot so Merkin Concert Hall, Madžarski kulturni center in Steinway Hall v New Yorku. Kennedy Center v Washingtonu itd.
To sporočilo za javnost posredoval Generalni konzulat v Clevelandu
hvaležnost in priznanje naše celotne skupnosti.
V	sedanjem vrvežu življenja, ki nas obdaja, pri današnji tehniki, ki obvladuje predvsem področje komunikacij, ostaja spoznanje, da se nekje neka skupina pretežno MLADIH ljudi, intenzivno ukvarja z resnim umetniškim delovanjem in vzdrževanjem tradicije svojih starih in prastarih staršev, kot svetal zgled narodne zavednosti in prizadevanj, da slovenska tradicija tudi med izseljenci še ne bo tako kmalu umrla.
V	tem pogledu zaslužijo Korotanci, s svojim vodstvom, vso našo hvaležnost, vsa naša priznanja, vse naše čestitke in vse naše želje za nadalj-ne uspehe v skrbi za slovensko pesem.
Govoriti ali pisariti o “vlogi”, ki Jo igra pevski zbor Korotan med nami, bi bilo zato povsem odveč. Ko si Je Metod Milač zamislil pevsko združbo takrat mladih slovenskih ljudi, ni mislil na neko “poslanstvo”. To Je prišlo samo od sebe in to Je tisto, kar današnjo zdesetkano slovensko družbo
v Clevelandu vedno znova oživlja in navdušuje: slo: venska pesem še živi, Jakopičeva želja se izpolnjuje, “mladina”, zdaj so to že pravnuki, se še vedno navdušuje za pesem, ki je prišla iz neke daljne dežele, za katero “mi starci” prisegamo, da je sveta, blagoslovljena, posvečena, predvsem pa NAŠA.
Na letošnjem koncertu se je “Korotan" po predlanski uspešni turneji po Sloveniji, torej predstavil v neki pomlajeni, novi zasedbi, vendar v duhu tradicije. Predlanski uspeh v Sloveniji je pravilno in dostojno ohranjen na dveh DVD ploščah, v slovenskem in angleškem jeziku, in na tem uspehu naj zbor gradi tudi svojo prihodnost.
Zbor je pomlajen, njegov zborovodja je mlad; zbor je odločen nadaljevati tradicijo in njegov zborovodja je odločen nadaljevati tradicijo. Dokler pa bo živela slovenska pesem, bo živelo slovenstvo, zato pojmo in poslušajmo slovensko pesem, da bomo dolgo živeli kot Slovenci in da nam bo lepo v Ameriki.

Od vseh na sliki, Hribšek in Kotnik sta danes še med živimi - po božji milosti.
Velikonočna številka Družine poroča o smrti zvestega delavca v Gospodovem vinogradu, duhovnika Lojzeta Jenka. Spoznal sem ga sredi 1950ih, kmalu po njegovem prihodu v newyorško nadškofijo.
V bližnjem Bridgeportu je nekaj let prej prevzel slovensko župnijo Svetega Križa dr. Andrej Farkaš, ki je med drugim bil znan po svojem gostoljubju do duhovnih sobratov. Pri njem smo se pogostokrat zbirali slovenski duhovniki iz vseh delov severovzhodnih ZD.
Kolikor me spomin še ni zapustil, morem našteti nekaj imen: Lojze Jenko, Jože Varga, Richard Rogan (frančiškan), Bertrand Kotnik (frančiškan), Franc Blatnik (salezijanec), Lojze Strle, John Prah (karmeličan), Anton Kovačič, Ciril Ferlič ter še nekateri.
Priloženi posenetk je vzet ob Farkaševem grobu ob priliki obiska mariborskega škofa Držečnika leta 1968, leto dni po Farkašev! smrti, ko sem že podpisani prevzel vodstvo župnije Sv. Križa.
Lojze Jenko je ostal zvest prijatelj in pogost obiskovalec pri Sv. Križu vse do svoje upokojitve. Večkrat mi je tudi dal pomoč v nenadni potrebi za namestnika.
Njegova smrt v Sloveniji me je živo spomnila na psihološko razdeljenost, ki jo občuti duhovnik emigrant, ki je mladost preživel v rojstni domovini. Gospodinja v župnišču, kjer sem eden °d petih duhovnikov pre-
živel nekaj let, je izrazila kot lastno doživetje to kar imenujem psihološka razdeljenost. Takole je modrovala Margaret Gess-ner, Nemka v Ameriki:
“Od tistega dneva, ko sem zapustila rojstno zemljo in odšla v Ameriko, več nimam pravega doma. Kadar sem v Ameriki, se čutim kot Nemka, kadar pa sem v Nemčiji, se čutim Amerikanka.”
Ni samo vprašanje lastnega občutka. Bolj kot to je dejstvo, da tako nate gledajo in te nagovarjajo ljudje, s katerimi živiš in delaš. Tudi če se sam premaguješ ko si v rojstnem kraju, da ne govoriš veliko o svojem delu v Ameriki, oziroma da svojim znancem v Ameriki ne razlagaš drugačnosti življenja v svoji mladosti, se ne moreš rešiti te naravne psihološke dvojnosti. Tako čutenje Lojzeta Jenka je moralo biti vzrok, da se je v letih po upokojitvi dvakrat preselil med New Yorkom in Slovenijo.
Dokler je bil v Duhovniškem domu v New Yor-ku, sva bila v stiku s pismi in občasnim telefonskim pogovorom. Ko nisem dalj časa več prejel njegovega običajno hitrega odgovora in tudi po telefonu ga ni bilo mogoče doseči, sem ugotovil, da je odšel v Duhovniški dom v Ljubljani. Ob svojem obisku v Sloveniji sem ga tam obiskal. Toda čez čas se mi je spet oglasil iz New Yorka. In zopet je prišel čas, ko ni bilo ne pisma in ne vesti, kje bi ga dosegel telefonsko.

Nekega dne pa sem se odločil: Danes hočem ugotoviti, kje živi Lojze Jenko. Sedež newyorške nadškofije je kakor Pentagon v Washingtonu. Pa nisem odnehal, dokler nisem dosegel nekega diakona zunaj New Yorka, ki naj bi imel odgovornost za upokojene nadškofijske duhovnike.
Mož je pokazal, da zgledno vrši svoje delo. Komaj sem mu omenil ime “Father Aloysius Jenko”, je bil vnet, “da mi bo točno postregel. Naj si vzamem svinčnik in papir, da si bom črko za črko napisal naslov, kjer sedaj živi “our priest. Father Jenko”. Natančno mi je črkoval popoln naslov. Tako, Lojze Jenko se je spet vrnil v svojo ljubo Slovenijo.
Lojze je bil močno priljubljen med duhovnimi sobrati v nadškofiji, ker je brez ugovora ali izgovora sprejel vsako delo v župniji. Duhovnikov je v njegovih delavnih letih še bilo zadosti, tako da je v župnišču vedno bilo več duhovnikov, ki so si med seboj delili opravila.
Položaj župnika je še bil visoko cenjen cilj vsakega mladega duhovnika. Vendar v New Yorku je bil ta cilj nedosegljiv za imigranta, tudi če ni bilo takega pisanega kanoničnega pravila. Jenko se ni zaradi tega pritoževal. Njegov odgovor na tako vprašanje je bil nasmeh in vesela pripomba: “Hvala Bogu, da mi ni treba o«sn<)> ‘ijtjvv.L ui.attt*
biti odgovoren, dela pa imam, kolikor ga hočem." Vsak župnik si je želel imeti takega pomočnika.
Svoje doživetje na prvem delovnem mestu v New Yorku na neki italijanski župniji je rad opisal kot primer, kaj je treba vzeti kot pogoj za uspešnega duhovnega pomočnika v italijanski župniji. Kuharica je pripravila večerja špagetov in seveda pripravila temu primerne orodje, vilice in žlico. Lojze se je obnašal neokretno, ker ni znal uporabljati žlico za navijanje špagetov na vilice. Kuharica ga nekaj časa opazuje, potem pa jezno vzklikne: “Le kako more kak škof posvetiti duhovnika, ki ne zna jesti špagetov!"
Poleg ljubezni do duhovniškega dela je Lojze Jenko imel izredno mero tega, kar bi imenoval da-režljivost ali nenavezanost na osebno last. Ljudje v župniji duhovniku darujejo ob posebnih prilikah vse vrste stvari - knjige in tudi večje dragocenosti, da se tega veliko nakopiči, kar človek opazi, ko se mora seliti.
Lojze Jenko si ni delal skrbi. Ob priliki vsake selitve je večino stvari
. razdal. Kdor koli je prišel blizu je nujno moral nekaj odnesti.
Ko je stopal v pokoj, me je prosil, da sem ga peljal na slovensko župnijo Sv. Vida v Cleveland. Pomagal sem mu nositi v svoj avto več škatel knjig, misleč da gre vse to z njim v Cleveland. “Ne, to kar ti odpelji zase. Jaz tega ne bom več potreboval.”
Tak je bil rajni Lojze Jenko. Prav tako se spominjam njegovih obiskov v Connecticut, kjer smo včasih preživeli neko popoldne pri mojih sorodnikih. Če je bila prilika peljati otroke na kak sladoled, ni smelo biti izgovora: Lojze je povabil in hoče pogostiti.
Dragi prijatelj Lojže Jenko, dolgo življenje ti je naklonil Gospodar življenja. Uživaj sedaj pri Njem zasluženo plačilo! Pa še svojega prijatelja soimenjaka priporoči Njegovemu usmiljenju!

Posvetitev nove dvorane na Slovenski pristavi
Odbor Slovenske pristave daje v znanje vsem Slovencem v Clevelandu in okolici, da bo slovesno odprtje nove dvorane za Spominski dan (Memorial : Day) konec tedna. Bruto domači proizvod se je lani poveča! kar za 5,2 odstotka - V Sloveniji L 2006 so bila razmeroma ugodna gospodarska gibanja
CLEVELAND, O. - V začetku velikega travna 2006 so se učenke in učenci slovenske šole pri Mariji Vnebovzeti udeležili šole v naravi. Ogledali so si čebelarjenje v nakladnih panjih na “mirko farmi” B. P. v Kirtlandu.
Čebele, ki sicer rade zabadajo svoja ostra žela v kakšnega vsiljivca, so bile ta dan zelo mirne in pouk se Je srečno končal brez težav. Otroci so kazali veliko zanimanja in poguma. Spoznali so tri različne čebele v panju: matico, delavke, in trote. Videli so katerih je več, katerih je manj. Za nagrado za velik pogum so se lahko posladkali z medom v satju.
Na sliki vidimo, kako drži Sofija Tromba sat medu, medtem, ko se brata Gillian in Fraser Hamilton pridno sladkata in si oblizujeta prste. Ostali udeleženci šole jih obkrožajo. Nekateri so v zaščitnih maskah. Vsem udeležencem iskrene čestitke!

Poraba medu je v ZDA dokaj šibka, približno pol kilograma na osebo na leto. Upam, da je poraba med nami Slovenci kaj večja. Marsikaterega od vas cenjenih porabnikov skrbi zakaj, da se surovi med tako hitro strdi v kozarcih, zakaj kristalizira. Med na policah v trgovini pa Je vedno tekoč. O tem so razmišljale še zelo učene glave, zato poglejmo v knjigi Moč medu in ABC to XYZ of Bee Culture, kaj pravijo.
Čebele nabirajo medičino na različnem cvetju. Medičina je sladka raztopina, ki jo rastline proizvajajo in nudijo za vabo
in nagrado čebelam in drugim žuželkom, ki izvršujejo oploditev na cvetju.
-Čebele znosijo medičino v svojo shrambo, iz svojih žlez dodajo encime, s svojimi krili delajo veter in izsušijo vlago in, v tednu dni predelajo medičino v med ter ga zapakirajo v zato zgrajene lončke iz voska. Vsak lonček posebej pokrijejo z voščenim pokrovčkom in si tako ustvarijo zalogo hrane za zimo.
Kemiki so z znanstvenimi študijami ugotovili koristnost uživanja medu. A tudi pred tem, so ljudje verjeli v to. Pomislimo samo na sam proces nastajanja. Poglejmo, kako se deviško cvetje na breskvi obsijani od toplega sonca trudi, da privabi mlade čebelice, da priletijo in si postrežejo z bogatim darom v cvetni čaši in pri tem izvršijo oploditev, torej razmnoževanje, ki je nujno za vsa živa bitja.
Morda si kdo od nas ljudi domišlja, da je cvetje tako lepo obarvano in prijetno dišeče zato, da se mi na njem pasemo oči in uživamo v prijetnih vonjavah.
Boljša kot je nagrada v cvetni čaši, več žuželk bo priletelo. Zato se rastline gotovo trudijo, da zavijajo v cvetje najboljše stvari, ki jih premorejo. Kako pameten je bil inženir, ki je ustvaril ta sistem.
Mi pa se vrnimo k medu in procesu kristalizacije. Rekli smo, da so čebele iz medičine izsušile vodo. A ne vso. V zrelem medu je še 18% vode in je zato med tekoč, zaradi sladkorja je sladek in zaradi mineralov, vita-
minov, encimov in drugih snovi je koristen zdravju.
Sladkorjev je v medu več vrst. Največ je sadnega sladkorja in grozdnega sladkorja. Oba sta mono-saharida in prehajata v kri brez presnove.
Prav grozdni sladkor ali glukoza pa kaže težnjo h kristalizaciji in bo zato med, ki ima glede na vir večjo količino glukoze, kot na primer lipov med, hitreje kristaliziral. Med od akacije pa ima manj glukoze in bo zato ostal več časa tekoč.
Tudi temperatura vpliva na kristalizacijo. Ker je med nasičena sladkorna raztopina, bo pri višji temperaturi ostal tekoč, pri nižji pa se težnja h kristalizaciji poveča. Kozarec z medom ne dajmo nikoli v hladilnik.
S prehodom iz tekočega v trdno stanje se kvaliteta medu in razmerje različnih snovi v medu ne spremeni.
Kako pa preprečimo ali vsaj odložimo začetek kristalizacije?
Če med segrejemo na 160°F za kratek čas, se bodo vsi kristalčki, ki plavajo v medu in delujejo kot jedra, na katerih se začne proces kristalizacije, raztopili in ves proces se ustavi ali vsaj odloži.
Osebno to segrevanje odklanjam, ker se bojim, da se mnoge koristne snovi uničijo. Po segrevanju v kozarcu nimamo več cenjen surovi med, ampak le med. Tudi z gostimi filtri, ki jih uporabljajo velike polnilnice in odstranijo iz medu še tako majhne delčke cvetnega prahu se kristalizacija odloži.

Spoštovane bralke in bralci, surovi med, ki je takšen kot so ga naše mlade deklice s krili -čebele zapakirale v voščene lončke bo morda hitreje kristaliziral kot tisti, ki ga najdete na policah veletrgovin in Je šel skozi mehansko in termalno obdelavo. A gotovo je bliže naravi. Med našimi starimi in modrimi je bil med znan pod imenom strd.

Ljubljana - Iz makroekonomskih vidikov Je razvidno, da se je delež javnofinančnih odhodkov še naprej zmanjševal. Ob vsem tem je država lani dosegla tudi spodbudna gibanja v mednarodnem okolju. Vzpodbudni so rezultati na področju rasti bruto domačega proizvoda (BDP), industrijske proizvodnje pa tudi na področju trga dela. Pomembno je, da je inflacija tudi po uvedbi evra ostala stabilna, k njej pa so višje cene predvsem storitev prispevale 0,24 odstotne točke.
Visoka rast BDP
Po zadnjih objavljenih podatkih se je BDP v zadnjem četrtletju 2006 realno povečal za 5,5 odstotka, v celem letu 2006 pa je bil večji za 5,2 odstotka glede na leto 2005. Temu primerna je bila tudi rast industrijske proizvodnje, ki se je v letu 2006 povečala za 7 odstotkov, od tega največ (za 8,8 odstotka) v sektorju rudarstva, v predelovalnih dejavnostih pa je bilo povečanje 7,5 odstotno.
Manj za javno porabo
Zadnji objavljeni podatki za javno porabo so do februarja letos, kažejo pa, da se je ta realno povečala za 3,2 odstotka.
kar je precej manj od rasti BDP. Realna rast javne porabe je bila tudi nižja od realne rasti plač, kar je vsekakor ugodno.
Ugodno tudi letos
Ugodni makroekonomski kazalci se povečujejo tudi v letu 2007. Izvoz blaga se je povečal za 15 odstotkov, januarja letos je Slovenija izvozila za 1,4 milijarde evrov (en evro je vreden okoli $1.35 US, op. ur. AD) blaga, od tega večino (za 1,05 milijarde evrov) v države Evropske unije (EU).
Uvozila je za 1,5 milijarde evrov blaga, kar je za 20,9 odstotka več kot v istem mesecu leta 2006 (od tega 1,2 milijarde iz držav EU). To pa pomeni, da je bila pokritost uvoza z izvozom 93,5-od-stotna.
Plače realno višje
Januarja je vsak zaposleni prejel 1.250,34 evra (tj. US$1688) brutoplače (mesečno, op. ur. AD), kar je za 6,4 odstotka več kot pred letom dni. Ne-toplača zaposlenega je bila 815,68 evra, kar je za 8,5 odstotka več kot pred letom dni. V letu dni so se torej plače realno povečale za 3,6 odstotka.

Januarja letos se je za 2,7 odstotka povečalo tudi število zaposlenih oseb. Januarja jih Je bilo pri Pravnih in fizičnih osebah zaposlenih 749.459. Samozaposlenih Je bilo 88.546, kar je za 6,9 odstotka več kot pred letom dni.
število brezposelnih se Je v letu dni znižalo za 16 odstotkov, kar pome-oi. da je bilo konec januarja 79-969 iskalcev zaposlitve.
Hkrati s tem se je povečalo tudi število prostih delovnih mest. Janu-nrja letos jih je bilo kar 21.015. kar je za 9,5 odstotka več kot leto Pred tem.
Vse to pomeni, da se Jo stopnja registrirane brezposelnosti ustavila pri 8*7 odstotka.

Ob vsem tem se Je število prejemnikov pokojnin v letu dni poveča-

sno razglasitvijo 26. junija 1991. Pred tem je morala prebroditi številne ovire in sprejeti odgovorne odločitve, ki so jo pripeljale do končnega cilja, ki je bila popolna osamosvojitev od jugoslovanske socialistične federacije.
To pa se ni zgodilo tako rekoč čez noč. Moral je dozoreti miselni in politični proces pripravljanja razmer, da bodo najširše plasti naroda dojele cilj prizadevanj za uresničitev večstoletnega sna o lastni državnosti v okviru Evrope.
Kot vemo, se je po Titovi smrti leta 1980 začelo glasno razmišljanje o novih okvirih za demokratični razvoj sožitja med narodni in narodnostmi Jugoslavije. Posebno Slovenci so to razmišljanje poglabljali, za kar gre prvenstvena zasluga kulturnikom in intelektualcem, a po drugi strani je to bila istočasno zgodovinska nuja, ker ni bilo možnosti se nasloniti na kakšno že dovolj oblikovano politično silo z globalnim narodnim pro-

To je dovolj zgovorno pokazal njen pritisk na pobudnike in avtorje znamenite številke Nove revije spomladi 1987, v kateri je skupina izobražencev (Franc Bučar, Tone Hribar, Peter Jambrek, Jože Pučnik, Dimitrij Rupel in Ivan Urbančič) objavila svoje prispevke za “slovenski narodni program”.
Zagovarjali so stališče, da izvirna suverenost pripada narodom, ne pa federaciji, Šele na tej miselni in pravni osnovi mora narod postati najprej suvreren v sebi in se tako znebiti skrbništva Zveze komunistov oziroma njene represivne roke v sklopu “Jugoslovanske narodne armije”.
Zato se je armija krčevito upirala vsakršnim spremembam političnega sistema. Dovolj značilno je bilo njeno represivno nastopanje proti tako imenovani “četverici” v Ljubljani, ki je dejansko spodbujala organiziranje civilne družbe za demokratizacijo Javnega življenja.
Korak do nastanka več političnih strank ni bil daleč. Prva se je v tem pogledu opogumila Kmečka zveza pod vodstvom Ivana Omana. Njenemu zgledu so kmalu nato sledile še druge politične skupine.
Oblikovanje političnih strank je nujno zahtevalo njihovo preverjanje med volivci. Tako so bile prve demokratične in tajne volitve določene za april 1990.

Ljubljana - V četrte, 12. aprila, je minilo okroglih 350 let, odkar se je v Kamni Gorici rodil Marko Anton Kappus, jezuitski misijonar, ki je dobršen del svojega življenja in dela preživel v Mehiki.
Kulturno društvo Kamna Gorica in Kovaški muzej Kropa sta ob okrogli obletnici v Kamni Gorici pripravila spominski večer, na katerem je življenje in delo Marka Antona Kappusa predstavil mag. Tomaž Nabergoj, kustos Narodnega muzeja Slovenije.
Marko Anton Kappus se je v mehiške misijone odpravil leta 1687 in se ustalil v pokrajini Sonora na severozahodu Mehike. Tam je ostal do smrti leta 1717. V tem času je bil ne le zavzet misijonar, temveč tudi raziskovalec in pesnik, ki je v svojih pismih v Evropo pisal o navadah in življenju tamkajšnjih ljudstev. Bil je tudi pomemben sodelavec tirolskega jezuita Kina, ki je kot kraljevi kartograf raziskoval Kalifornijo in položil temelje kolonizacije Arizone in severne Kalifornije ter v več raziskovalnih odpravah pokazal, da je Kalifornija polotok in ne otok, kot so tedaj mislili. Kappus je bil prvi, ki je o tem pomembnem odkritju poročal Evropi.
Rodbina Kappusov, ki je bila nekdaj najpremožnejša fužinarska družina v Kamni Gorici in je bila zaradi svojih prizadevanj za razvoj železarstva leta 1693 povzdignjena v plemiški stan (Von Pichelstein), je poleg Marka Antona dala kar nekaj pomembnih mož, ki so sooblikovali podobo javnega življenja Kranjske.
Med drugimi je bil Fran Žiga rudarski nadsodnik za Kranjsko, Karel Jožef pa član ljubljanske Akademije delavnih. Potomec Kappusov je bil po materi tudi Žiga Zois in krušna mati Antona Tomaža Linharta, poleg Marka Antona Kappusa pa je bil misijonar še Sigfrid Kappus (1702-1769), ki je kot frančiškan deloval v Egiptu. Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
1604. Veliko pisem čaka na objavo!
Danes prebiram glavne misli iz pisma misijonarja lazarista Petra Opeka, ki deluje na Madagaskarju. To je poročilo Akamasoe - združenje prijateljev za leto 2006:
“Želja je, da bi ljudje, ki živijo pod okriljem Akamasoe zares postali avtonomni. V preteklem letu smo skušali uresničiti načrte. Življenje na tem otoku, ki je veliko za 30 Slovenij, ni lahko. Večina političnih strank hočejo le svoje privilegije, življenje malih ljudi jih ne zanima in ni dosti delovnih mest na razpolago.
Vendar se počasi le ureja, ko delajo nove ceste, saj bo kmalu sever povežem z jugom. Tudi število šolskih otrok se je povečalo. Boj proti revščini je trd. V deželi je mnogo korupcije. 70% ljudi živi z manj kot dolar na dan. 5-10% ljudi živi normalno življenje. Podkupovemje je privlačno. Zločinci s pomočjo podkupnine so hitro na prostem, tisti pa, ki je kaj malega ukradel, pa je zaporu več let, brez, da bi sodišče izreklo obsodbo.
V	takih razmerah tudi Akamasoa ni imela lahkega dela. V preteklem letu je na sprejetje prišlo 2233 družin (8282 oseb), a jih je ostalo le 62 s 121 otroci. Denarno smo jim pomagali in so odšli v domači kraj. To je bila za te najboljša rešitev.
Kar je uspelo narediti je z zavzetostjo družin samih in s pomočjo dobrotnikov, ki so z ljubeznijo podprli projekte. V Manantenasoi je bila zgrajena 3-nadstropna šolska stavba, v Mahatsari tudi taka, vsaka z 12 razredi. V Mangarivotra je bil povečan in prenovljen sprejemni prostor. Zgrajenih je bilo 81 stanovanjskih hiš s stranišči in kopalnicami. V Salata je bila dokončana stavba nižje gimnazije za 300 učencev. V Ampitafa, 900 km na jugovzhodu, je bila zgrajena porodišnica, dispanzer, šola s tremi učilnicami ter hiši za babico in zdravnika. Šola v Andaralamitra je dobila novo asfaltirano ploščad. Urejena je bila infrastruktura in ograja okrog šolskega poslopja v Ma-nantenasoa in v Mahatsinjo. Naselje Ampasika je dobilo tekočo vodo. Vas Mahabo na jugu otoka je dobila novo šolo - 2 razreda, vas Mahatsara je dobila elekriko in pitno vodo.
V	tem letu smo angažirali 82 novih učiteljev in profesorjev. Dve skupini (vsaka 20 otrok in mladih) sta bili na 10-dnevnih počitnicah na morje v Mahanoro (350 km) in tretja skupina petnajstih je šla za 14 dni v Ampitafa.
Rezultati v nižjih razredih so bili zelo dobri, 100% uspeh v osnovni šoli. V nižji gimnaziji je bil tudi dober uspeh, manj uspešna je bila matura.

Veliko je načrtov za leto 2007. Večina ljudi niso sami krivi, da so se nekega dne znašli v tako težki situaciji. Tudi nihče ni sam kriv, da je' bil rojen v veliki bedi. Še naprej se računa na velikodučnost, dragi prijatelji. S skupnimi močmi bo uspelo uresničiti nove načrte in že vnaprej iskrena hvala za sodelovanje.
Vsem in vsakemu vse najboljše v tem letu 2007, in prisrčni pozdrav, misijonar Peter Opeka."
Tudi lep pozdrav in vse dobro želi misijonar Rok Gajšek, ki pomaga in sodeluje pri življenju Akamasoe ter vse lepo pozdravlja!

Vera A. Candon
Dne 24. aprila je v Ash-tabuli, O., umrla 97 let stara Vera A. Candon, Ph.D., ki je imela doktorat v psihologiji in je bila tekom | dolgega življenja povezana z raznimi univerzami in agencijami, zapušča sestro Marian in brata Adolpha, pred leti je služila nekaj let kot članica direktorija Slovenskega doma za ostarele. Pogrebnih obredov po njeni želji ni bilo, pokopana je bila na pokopališču I White Haven Memorial Park.
V prvem krogu 8. aprila so državljani volili predsednika predsedstva Slovenije in njegove člane, delegate v zvezni zbor skupščine Jugoslavije, delegate zbora občin republiške skupščine in delegate v družbenopolitični zbor republiške skupščine.
Drugi krog volitev je potekad 22. aprila. Za predsednika predsedstva republike je bil izvoljen Milan Kučan z 58% glasov, njegov tekmec Jože Pučnik iz vrst Demosa pa je preji 42% glasov.
Največje zanimamje je vladalo za volitve delegatov v zbor občin slovenske skupščine (dejansko parlamen tat). Na teh prvih demokratičnih in tajnih volitvah po drugi svetovni vojni je koalicija demokratičnih strank De-most (Demokratična opozicija Slovenije) dobila 54,31% glasov. Ostale stranke, ki so pomenile kontinuiteto s prejšnjim sistemom, so dobile 37% glasov.
Demos je tako prejel 47 poslanskih mandatov od skupno 80, leve stranke kontinuitete pa so prejele 31 mandatov, 2 mandata sta pripadla italijanski in madžarski manjšini.
Ustanovna seja nove skupščine je bila 17. maja 1990. Za njenega predsednika je bil izvoljen Franc Bučar (iz vrst Demosa).
Predsednik republike je mandat za sestavo novega izvršnega odbora (vlade) zaupal Lojzetu Peterletu, predstavniku Slovenskih krščanskih demokratov, ki so znotraj Demosa dobili največ gla-
sov.
Po tej zgodovinski spremembi političnega predstavništva je Slovenijo čakala izpeljava plebiscita o samostojnosti in neodvisnosti Slovenije. Ta zgodovinski plebiscit je bil 23. decembra 1990 in na njem so se volilni udeleženci izrekli za osamosvojitev od zvezne jugo-slovanske federacije.
Temeljne ustavne listine o samostojnosti in neodvisnosti Republike Slovenije je skupščina (parlament) sprejela na zasedanju 25. junija 1991, naslednjega dne je bila

Umrl je 59 let stari Edward N. Subel, mož Sandre, oče Jennifer Schussler, Christine Lesnansky in Edwarda, 2-krat stari oče, sin Edwarda (pok.) in Olge (r. Molo-dec). brat Sandre Hallen in Carol Leib, veteran vietnamske vojne, v kateri je služil v ameriških letalskih silah. Pogreb je bil 26. aprila v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Viljema in pokopom na Vernih I duš pokopališču.
