Throughout the centuries, nations around the globe have come up with unique and specific ways of celebrating this holiday. The same goes for Slovenia, where many customs, traditions, events and superstitions related to Christmas have been preserved to this day. Historical circumstances * and Slovenia’s specific geographic position, which unites elements of the Alpine, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian regions, have affected the nature and variety of customs and traditions that have marked both everyday life and holidays. Of the holidays, Christmas has a special place in the hearts of Slovenians. While many Christmas customs are part of the common European cultural heritage, there are still many remnants of the pagan tradition in folk customs. In Slovenian, the word bozic (Christmas) actually means “small god,” which some experts believe is related to the minor pagan deity Svarozic. the god of farmers. According to pagan tradition, Svarozic was reborn every year to protect the harvest. It is believed that the name was transposed during the conversion to Christianity to the “new” god. Month of Merrymaking and Preparations December is a merry •ttonth, marked by numerous events celebrated in anticipation of Christmas and New ^ears, many of which are of Catholic origin. Gift giving starts as early as December 6, when St. Nicholas comes to homes together with the evil parklji (devils) who scare children and take away those that were not well behaved. The devils are the Personification of evil, while Sf Nicholas is the embodiment of good. Nowadays, there are many St. Nicholas fairs throughout the country. The amp W te* < m 4 W m % m. Wandering among the stalactites, visitors can come upon Mary and Joseph or a group of shepherds on their journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. A series of nativity scenes have been brought to life by some 50 primary and secondary school students. They will also show how their ancestors marked this great Christian holiday. Youth choruses will be singing Christmas carols, brought to full effect in the magnificent natural concert hall. The most famous live nativity scene in Slovenia sees an average of some 5,000 visitors a year. Advent season, a time of preparations for Christmas, lasts four weeks. It is a symbolized by the Advent wreath, which only used to be made in well-off families in major cities, but is now widespread. The smallish wreaths are made of pine twigs, interwoven by violet ribbons. There arc four blue or white candles on top, one lit for each week before Christmas. Carol singing, called koledovanje in Slovenia, used to be very popular at Christmas time, but is now virtually extinct. Carol singers were groups of men who would go from house to house to sing a song for the people living there and wish them much happiness and a good harvest. Some sources suggest that this custom started as early as the 13lh century, but attempts are being made in certain parts of the country to revive it. While boys walked from house to house singing carols, girls used to carry a statue of the Virgin Mary into a different home for nine evenings in a row. This custom disappeared soon after WWII and is now only practiced among the Slovenian minority in Italy. Christmas Tree, Decorations and Nativity Scene Present day Christmas decorations are nothing like they used to be. They were much less colorful, and homes were usually decorated with evergreens such as ivy, box tree and stone pine. In almost all parts of Slovenia, people used to put up undecorated fir or pine trees. They hung them down from the ceiling in the living room or a fence in front of the house. Only rarely was it put up facing upwards like it is today. If there was any, or- namentation was modest, consisting mostly of apples, nuts and cookies. The Christmas tree as we know it today, is relatively new to Slovenia; it only started appearing after WWI. However, even before WWI people, both in cities and the countryside, used to embellish the trees with chains, flowers, and wreaths made of colored paper. Added to this were apples, walnuts and hazelnuts. In the comers of the living room, they also hung up straw braids decorated with produce such as beans and corn. Christmas after WWII was heavily influenced by political circumstances. The former socialist regime also dictated the Christmas customs. Accordingly, it was not Christmas trees that were decorated, but New Year’s trees, and they also spread out of the living rooms to public places. At the end of the 1980s, the Christmas tree was revived. The Advent season is also a time to set up nativity scenes. Although this is a relatively recent phenomenon which started in churches, it quickly spread throughout the country. According to written sources, the first nativity scene was unveiled by the Jesuits in Ljubljana in 1644. Today, they are seen in urban and rural homes, usually in a comer of the living room which is referred to as God’s comer. There are many well-preserved paper nativity scenes dating to the 19th century, which are extraordinary examples of folk culture. In recent times, live nativity scenes also have been gaining in popularity. They are shows put up in nature with actors and live animals. The most famous live nativity scene in Slovenia can be seen in the Postojna Cave. This is followed by Christmas dinner when tables are laden with all sorts of goodies, including the indispensable and traditional potica. It was not always like that though, as Christmas is a time of fasting, and dinner was therefore very plain. After dinner, it is still almost obligatory to go to midnight Mass. Also on Christmas Eve, families would gather around the pleasantly warm clay-brick baker’s oven which used to stand in the comer of the living room of virtually every rural home (peč). The oven was the center of lives of our grandparents, but not only on Christmas. The peč was much mpre than just a means to keep warm - it was the center of family life. The Christmas season was also a time to foretell the future. Different methods were employed, from telling fortunes by observing the fire bum, to reading forms assumed by liquid wax as it was poured into cold water. While fathers usually wanted to know what next year’s harvest would be like, girls were mostly interested in when they would become ••• brides. Today, however, Christmas is mostly a time to give gifts, and has become a very commercial holiday. In Slovenia, gift giving has a tradition that goes back to more than 70 years, and only in urban parts of the country, in the countryside, gift giving was not traditional. If people did give gifts, these were mostly walnuts, hazelnuts, and dried fruits. Other Customs and Traditions Slovenians are well known for their love of good wine and the period after Christmas was very important for wine-makers. On December 27, the winemakers blessed the best wine they had and stashed it away for special occasions. Since it was blessed on the day St. John (Janez), it was called St. John’s wine (Sentjanze-več). The following day is the feast of the Holy Innocents, which is still celebrated. This is the only day of the year when children can hit their parents, albeit only symbolically, consequence-free. Kids visit their relatives, receive presents and flog adults with a stick. According to pagan tradition, this protects the adults from the ghosts of their forefathers. Christmas celebrations changed throughout the centuries. In socialism, Santa Claus was replaced by the politically more acceptable Grandfather Frost. Although socialism is gone now, children do not mind having both. Actually, they can look forward to three benevolent gift bringing men in December: St. Nicholas, Santa Claus and Grandfather Frost. --Slovenia News 100 WORDS MORE OR LESS by John Mercina THE MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS 2003 ! On Sunday, December 14, 2003, at an early Mass, the Priest at the local Catholic Church announced that "today is Gaudete Sunday - the word meaning rejoice”. The priest asked volunteers in different sections of the church to tell the whole congregation why they are rejoicing. One parishioner noted that his daughter will be home for Christmas. Another stated that her sister’s cancer is in remission. Still another male professed having a loving wife and a young boy said he had a wonderful father sitting next to him. A lady in another section noted that she is rejoicing because the dictator who ruled Iraq was captured by the U.S. military forces. A spontaneous loud applause greeted this news for it was truly a time for everyone to rejoice. Christmas carae early in the form of good news. People truly rejoiced. ED JERSE Euclid - South Euclid - Mayfield Heights Richmond Heights - Lyndhurst Life in the Refugee Camps 1948 _______by Anton Žakelj, translated and edited by John Žakelj Thursday, January 1,1948 in the Liechtenstein refugee camp near Judenburg, Austria Last night I had a dream that we were moving to a new home. I had two full backpacks, two mesh bags full of green apples and various packages. But I didn’t have anything for my wife. Our roommates Cene and Franc Kokelj said they had similar dreams. I often have dreams about returning to our home in Slovenia, but they turn into nightmares. The partisans are chasing me, and I am trying to escape up through the overgrown ravine near our home. Saturday,Jan.3,1948 My wife, Cilka, Franc Demšar and I took a train ride this morning to Feld-kirchen to visit our friends Tomaz and Dora Pivk. (They 'vere our neighbors in Ziri, but had to leave their homes like we did and are now living with relatives in Feld-kirchen.) We arrived at their home at 8 p.m., and stayed up talking until midnight. Sunday, Jan. 4,1948 Cilka and Dora went to church in Feldkirchen at 8 am., Tomaz and I at 10. Dora made us a wonderful dinner including soup, roast veal and potatoes. Tomaz and Dora are not happy here. They don’t know what will happen with them. Monday, Jan. 5, 1948 We got up at 5 a.m. to catch the train from Feldkirchen back to our camp. Dora gave us some apples, canned plums and potica to take with us. After a long delay, the train left at 9:30 a.m., and we arrived back in Judenburg at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6,1948 Today is the holy day of the Three Kings. Back home, this was one of the most important church holy days. Here it is not recognized as a state holiday. In the evening, I went to the Festsaal to watch the operetta, "Zum weissen Rossi” (At the White Pony). It was poorly performed. Wednesday, Jan. 7,1948 Cilka continues to work on leather uppers for local shoemakers. Today I helped fashion and glue some of the pieces. Our roommates Franc and Pavle had an argument about firewood. Saturday, Jan. 10,1948 Pavle is angry with Franc because he gives our firewood away to other people. Sunday, Jan. 11,1948 I sent Mr. Dellafiore a price list for our bobbin lace. Cilka and I went for a walk along the Mura River, and then to a German movie called “Dangerous Summer.” It was mediocre. Tuesday, Jan. 13,1948 Today I worked all day on the bookkeeping records for our lacemakers. Friday, Jan. 16,1948 Frank Mlinar arrived on a visit from St. Kanzion. Sunday, Jan. 25,1948 Cilka and I watched a nearby ski jumping competition this afternoon. The best jump was 69 yards. Sunday, Feb. 1,1948 Cilka and I went for a walk along the Mura River today. It was a nice day, but I was in a bad mood. I don’t have a job. Our sales of bobbin lace are not going well. I’m bored. We don’t know if we can ever go back home, or where we will find a home. For a while, I was making brushes out of larch branches (to sell to nearby villagers), but that hasn’t been going well, either. People don’t have money to buy things. I’ve tried to learn to make bobbin lace myself, but I don’t see well enough. Why didn’t I take the camp administration job that the IRO (International Refugee Organization) offered me last December? Cilka advised against it: “Don’t get involved in the administration of the camp - they’ll blame you for everything!” Monday, Feb. 2,1948 Cilka and I walked to Weisskirchen and sold some bobbin lace for 42 shillings and 2 loaves of bread. Prices have been falling lately - a pound of butter costs about 50 shillings, one egg costs 3 shillings, a loaf of rye bread 8 shillings. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, DECEMBER 18, 2003 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, DECEMBER 18, 2003 4 Mlakar Walks Down Memory Lane m by RAY MLAKAR Hip, hip hooray, Ray is back and so is my treasure locker full of jokes, but first 1 want to thank Rudy Pivik for having invited me to last week’s meeting of the SNPJ Lodge with the Christmas Party and the election of officers. Unfortunately, it had been well over 25 years since I was at the SNPJ meeting and although there were a lot of new faces I did not know, it was good seeing Rudy Pivik, his wife, Maria, Donna Ohman, Ella Samanich, Mimi Stibil, and Mrs. Seitz. For old folks getting up in years they all looked like a million bucks. Ella Samanich surprised me, for if Carl were to come back from heaven temporarily, he’d say, “Ella, you look as good now as the day I left.” There was certainly plenty of food at the Christ-„ mas Party and if anyone went home hungry or thirsty, it was their own fault. Thanks for the good memories, folks. Well, come on Ray, let’s get to the jokes. Let’s see. Here are some good ones. In the beginning, God created earth and then rested. Then God created man and then rested. Then God created women and since then neither God nor man has rested. Another one. Our last fight was my fault. My wife asked me what was on TV and I said, “dust.” Hey, I am on a roll. If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is yelling at the front door, who do you let in first? The dog of course; he’ll shut up once you let him in. Okay, one more and then I can forget the women jokes. When you look at it, marriage is a three-ring circus. First the engagement ring; then a wedding ring; and then the suffering. Well, time we get back to 1957 which I return to with much regret and sorrow. As you know from the last column, Dad suffered a severe stroke and ended up at Berea Hospital which at that time was the closest hospital to Parma Heights. Dad was not happy there to say the least and unfortunately in those days, they did not know much about what to do to help stroke victims and so dad was stuck there for a good two months. At times I did not know if I was coming or going for I would hurry from work at the Reserve Center and Mom would have supper on the table and we would rush eating in order to dash over to Berea Hospital to help Dad eat for having the stroke on the right side and him being right handed, he felt clumsy eating, period. After hospital visits it was back home to help mom with the dishes and get the house back in order, prepare a bag lunch for me for the next morning for six a.m. arrives before you know it. Fortunately I worked with a good crew at the Reserve Center and they understood my circumstances and if I were not operating on all six cylinders, they knew I had my mind someplace else. Berea Hospital was a good hospital and Dad had a great bunch of nurses assigned to his room whom I am sure more than earned their way to heaven, for Dad could be a handful at times. Unfortunately and even today, they always ask if you have “dentures” and being that Dad was a stroke victim, right away they felt that with dentures he may choke either on the food or on his own teeth and so they put him on a puree diet; everything is pulverized and it looks like crap with a capital “C.” Unfortunately, Dad would have no part of that crap, but the nurses warned him that they were keeping track of “in-put” and out-put §nd Dad had a few choice words to tell them about their in-put and out-put that I cannot repeat in this editorial. I have to give Dad credit for he was going to beat the system. He knew if he did not eat their food, it would mean more IV injections, feeding thru the tubes, thru the veins. Dad was in a four-man room and there was a little old Italian man across from Dad and the two of them hit it off pretty good and so at supper time, Dad says, “Tony, come over here by my bed.” Tony obliged but then when Dad spoke, you listened. The silverware always came in a plastic bag and so Dad told Tony to take out the silverware and empty his dish of pureed food into the plastic bag and take it down the hall and empty it in the toilet, so in that way Dad’s dish would be clean and the nurses would think he ate up all his food. Well Tony apparently did not have a high IQ and when he took the bag of puree down to the bathroom, instead of just dumping the contents into the toilet, he tied a knot in the bag and threw it into the toilet and walked back to his room. Well, all hell broke loose for the bag could not go down the toilet since it was tied in a knot and the bathroom flooded with water coining down the hall. Plumbers and house keepers were called in to clean up the mess, and thru around, the nurses soon found out that it was Dad who caused this mess. Needless to say, they were not on talking terms for a few days. I made it a point to talk to the doctor and told him to forget about the pureed food and let Dad eat regular hospital food. It took some talking, but the doctor gave in but Dad still found something to complain about, the food was either too hot or too cold, too raw, not seasoned. Dad lived on chocolates and the doctor said in his case, give him anything he wants, as long as he is getting something into his tummy. And so Dad looked forward to Mom and I coming and insuring we had a box of chocolates for him, and on more than one occasion he told the nurses where they could shove their hospital food. The nurses got used to Dad’s antics and joked along with him just to keep his spirits up. Well I am sure about now Dad is looking down on me and saying, “Do you have to tell them everything” Yes, I do. Pa; we walked up that hill of Calvary with you.” Well, time I put this column to bed and turn myself in for I do not have a pleasant week to look forward to, but I won’t bore my readers with that, so until next time, may the good Lord bless and watch over all of you and keep you in his loving care. Sorry, ladies about the women jokes but I wanted to see a smile on your face for all you women are still on my list, but I am not saying what list for I feel Josie is listening to me. Hospital Humor Did you hear about the hospital that asked the doctors about a new building project? The Dermatologist said the move would be rash. The Gastroenterologist (stomach & intestines) had a gut feeling it wouldn’t work. The Otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat) said “I hear what you’re saying, but the cost would be hard to swallow and we’d pay through the nose for years.” The Neurologist thought the hospital had a lot of nerve. The Allergist said, “Scratch it.” the Ophthalmologist said the idea was short-sighted. The orthopedist issued a joint resolution to prevent a knee-jerk reaction. The Pathologist said, “Over my dead body.” The Pediatrician said, “Grow up, the notion is childish.” The Psychiatrist said, “In your dreams, you must be crazy.” The Cardiologist said the heart of the matter is cash flow. The Obstetrician/Gynecologist said, “Who conceived of the project? It’s premature and born to fail.” The Podiatrist just took it all in stride. Slovenian women are cooking again in the old neighborhood on Cleveland’s East Side, and the sumptuous savors are taking Rudy Sterk back to when he was a kid on East 77,h Street. “My mouth waters every time I come through here,” said Sterk who manages the new St. Vitus Village apartments for seniors, mostly Slovenians resettling in the inner city. “You can smell the strudel and the bread cooling in the afternoon. It brings me back to the days when you walked through the neighborhood and smelled all that cooking.” The 33-unit apartment complex, which opened a year-ago November, is cater-comered to St. Vitus Catholic Church on Lausche Avenue near East 61st St. It is helping to give the old neighborhood a Middle-European identity again. Old World recipes, language and customs are re-tuming to a place where they had thrived for a century -Until about 20 years ago, when suburban flight and urban deterioration took over. “The people are coming back to be close to the church and the community,” said Sister Mary Avsec, a neighborhood social worker. “And those who are still here definitely don’t want to leave the neighborhood. The three-story apartment complex, a project of the 110-year-old parish, sits on an acre that was once the site of 11 buildings, including a convent and a comer saloon. Now, a two-block stretch of Lausche Avenue, between Norwood and East 60th Street, looks like an Old World village, with the church’s twin steeples rising over the row of Renaissance-style apartments and a 90-year-old school building. The Rev. Victor Cimperman, a retired priest, was bom 86 years ago in a house on East 61st Street. Now he resides in St. Vitus Village as well as his sister, Mary, 91. “This is home for me now,” Cimperman said. “I went to school here, and graduated in ’31.” The school, which had more than 1,200 kids when Cimperman went there, is now closed as St. Vitus School, but will reopen again next year as St. Martin de Porres High School. Slovenian immigrant Marija Cugelj, 71, who moved into the complex last year, has planted potatoes, herbs and a rosebush that had grown in the yard of her nearby home for 30 years. It was a gift from her late husband, John. “I miss my husband,” she said. “I better not talk. I start to cry.” The $5.2 million apartment project was funded by grants, loans and sweat equity from parishioners like Stan Kuhar, Paul Kosir, Ivan Cugel and Councilman Joe Cimperman. Cugel is a banker, and Kuhar is a former banker. Kosir was general contractor for the building of St. Vitus Village. All worked for free. “We took a very, very big risk,” Kuhar said. “But what were we to tell these people who lived in this neighborhood and worked hard all their lives? Go to the state? The state will take care of you?” The idea would not sit well with Marija Cugelj. “Slovenian people like to work,” she said, running a dust cloth over the church pulpit. Cugelj bakes ethnic doughnuts called “krofe.” Her apartment neighbor Ivanka Pretnar bakes bread and Old World nut rolls called “potica.” Once or twice a month on Saturdays, a dozen or so women parishioners gather in the school kitchen to make and sell krofe to raise money for the church. Last year they raised $10,000, making 4,500 doughnuts at a time. Out on the street, the aroma on those Saturdays is unmistakable. “It’s the smell of fresh bread baking,” Kuhar said. He said the apartment complex is only a seed that he hopes to see flower and pollinate in the neighborhood. “My dream is to do five or six blocks like this,” he said. “Then you’re creating a village.” And what is Christmas? It is the happiest time of the year. It is the season... when mistletoe... and soups, and sliding, and schoolboys prevail; when the country is illuminated by fires and bright faces. —Charles Lamb Cecilia Dolgan and daughter Ann sang “Ostanimo prijatelji” at the Glasbena Matica Concert on Saturday evening, Nov. 15 at the Slovenian National Home. _____ (Photo by TONY GRDINA) ' — ' ---- ■■ 1 ■ ■■ . Rupel je osumljen poskusa storitve kaznivega dejanja zlorabe uradnega položaja in pravic v zvezi z ustanavljanjem zasebne diplomatske akademije v Portorožu. Najbolj znane take države so seveda Francija, Nemčija, Rusija in - na tem seznamu - Slovenija. Članice KŽL so dobre gospodinje in zavedne Slovenke. Duhovni voditelji spremljajo program in delo. Prvi voditelj je bil sedaj pokojni župnik Janez Kopač, pozneje Tone Zrnec in sedanji župnik Ivan Plazar. Naj ta luč vere in dobrih del sveti v njen zlati jubilej in še naprej v bodočnost. Pod varstvom zavetnice Marije, Matere dobrega sveta naj bo znamenje vernega slovenskega ljudstva v Kanadi. - Anica Resnik Članice Katoliške ženske lige v župniji Brezmadežni zbrane ob priložnosti duhovnih vaj - datuma za fotografijo ni P. VENDELIN ŠPENDOV _________Lemont, IL LEMONTSKI ODMEVI December! Že sama beseda nam vzbudi prijetne in blage spomine. Miklavž z darovi in angeli in parklji. Zadnje dni oktobra in prve dni novembra se je v okviru chicaške nadškofije v prostorni Navy Pier v Chicagu vršil “Catholic Festival of Faith”. Učiteljem, učiteljicam in star-čem želimo veliko potrpljenja in vztrajnosti. In čeprav so peklenske sile strahotne - včasih jih vidimo z lastnimi očmi na delu “bodite pogumni; jaz sem svet premagal" (Jan 16:33). Parish community ^eans St. Vitus Parish (Cleveland, Ohio). ^ ) How do I apply? In general terms the following guidelines: * Parent/legal guardian to pick-up application at parish rectory. * Copy of current year federal tax return with attached schedules, as well as copy of all W2s for high school and college applicants. * Copy of most current report card * ^on-refundable processing fee of $10 per family, regardless of how many numbers in a family apply. In addition, high school and college applicants may be required to write an essay of 200 words only. Incoming high school freshmen as well as incoming college freshmen must also have a completed recommendation form and release letter allowing for release of transcript record. 4.) Do I need to re-apply each year? YES! Each Applicant MUST reapply each year if attending an accredited tuition paying school from grades K- to -16. If there are multiple applicants in a family (i.e. same household) a separate application MUST be completed for each applicant. Only ONE NON-REFUNDABLE fee of $10.00 is required as well as ONLY ONE SET of FEDERAL TAX RETURN with all schedules and W2s. ♦ St. Vitus Church 5.) How do I know if I qualify? There is no way to determine in advance whether or hot an applicant will qualify for a grant. For example, objective factors such as household size, tuition paid by a household, household income, grade point average, type of courses taken, etc., are but a few of the factors taken in consideration. Since each applicant’s situation is unique there is “no standard type of grant.” Acknowledgment: The Mihevc Grant Program is administered by St. Vitus Parish. Every effort is made to assist registered parish families to meet the challenges today and in the future for the children who attend tuition paying schools from K- to -16. Unfortunately, the Mihevc Grant Program recognizes that it will not be able to meet the needs of every applicant in every situation. Review Committee and ex officio members annually review factors used to ensure that a fair and objective methodology is used to make tuition paying education available and a reality to as many applicants as possible. Review Committee members may from time to time use outside resources that could provide professional guidance for this program. Committee members are not compensated for their services. A 30-mile wide land corridor connecting the cities of Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, was taken by government fiat and covered with a continuous, climate-controlled dome. This Megatropolis was completed in 2092 and given the name North/Central. During 2098, 40 acres of landfill were added to the shore of Great South Lake (the former Lake Erie), and the dome was extended to cover government buildings built on this new site. North/Central is now the Capital Complex of Urban Module Five which unified the states of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Personal transport moves rapidly within this dome. The last district to complete this massive construction project, we are now connected to the national network of people movers. Ours is routed through a hub near the shores of Great South Lake (formeHy Lake Erie). During excavation fcr this project, an Indian tribal mound was unearth in an historic area known as The Field of Jacob. The extremes of heat, cold, flood and drought have been controlled by advances in science. Oil, coal, and natural gas are no S longer relevant. Electricity and magnetism are used almost universally, and the fuel to create these major power sources is primarily sewage, both solid and liquid. Where supplemental fuel is required, water of any kind will suffice. Waste that was once dumped into land-fills is now reduced to carbon dust and compressed into pellets. Carbon and the components of common soil, have become our basic raw materials. The virtually infinite supply of fuel sources and their ability to easily generate hitherto impossible extremes of heat and pressure, have made this possible. Steel and wood are no longer widely used. Other than heliports for emergency use, our airports are for international flights only. All Urban Modules have arteries of climate-controlled overhead people movers. The eight Modules are also connected by Express Tubes. “MagLev Floaters,” as they are called, can transport people anywhere on this system at speeds up to Mach 2. For personal transit from exits on this system to actual commuting destinations, small electric vehicles running on dedicated, elevated rail systems, are rented as easily as picking up a baby-stroller at the mall. Slide your Universal Credit Card/National ID into a slot, and a few clicks will send this little robotic vehicle safely to your destination. I hope If || that the Advent & Christmas flyer will be of help. It tells of the times we will gather for prayer and celebration during this holy and Sr \r Cnmn+ietc IVvr-rr/vffon coacrtn rtf A t sometimes, forgotten season of Advent. K The prophet of the season is John the Baptist. He was that camel-skinned “voice in the desert” who lived on locust and honey. When 4t fl he cried out “ make straight the way of the Lord” his message was plain and simple: Make things right again! W We have an opportunity to do just that. Our Communal Reconciliation this Advent will be with Holy Cross Church at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 December. After prayer and Scripture, an examination of conscience will lead into owning up to the sin in our lives with one of the several confessors. No better way to spend an hour of Advent. Christmas and every Sunday are days that we pray together. Come and be a part of Saint Christine when we do what we do best. If you have not been contributing, know how much we need your support. If you are one who gives regularly, please consider increasing your gift. Remember who it is who has given you all of your life’s abundant gifts. Our Loving God won’t be outdone in generosity. Come this Advent and Christmas. It’s the time to make things right again. Vida Dear Parishioners, In a few days, it is going to be Christmas, the birthday of our Savior Jesus Christ. This event, so beautifully described by the evangelists, tells how God sent a Divine Savior to earth to save people from their sins and death, and to reveal the secret that all may become children of God. We believe this because Jesus told us so. You and I and every person who so believes, has a share in the saving work of Jesus Christ. I write this in the hope that the light of Christ's presence within you might bring peace and happiness to you and your loved ones. May it bring peace among the nations of the world and a loving remembrance of our men and women serving in the armed forces abroad. May God bless you and your families on this day and throughout the coming new year 2004. May He grant you abundant health and happiness, and most of all, the knowledge that God really loves and cares about you! Your priests at St. Vitus, Father Joseph Boznar Father Victor Cimperman Dragi farani. Pred nami so božični prazniki. MASE Please follow the regular weekly schedule until Wed., Dec. 24, 2003. Vaši duhovniki CHRISTMAS - BOŽIC 2003 Dear parishioners and friends of St. Mary's Joy to the world! Peace on earth! Heavenly peace! Do not be afraid! So often during these Christmas holidays we hear the echo of these words of comfort and joy. But for true peace, true joy, true courage and hope, we must center our holidays and lives on Jesus Christ. Please join us in celebrating the holy birth of our Savior Jesus to renew within us the power of the intimate and infinite love Cod has for us. May we radiate the joy of this holy season through hearts and souls purified by the Sacrament of Confession and open to the gift of Jesus who is Cod from Cod, Light from Light, true God from true God who is forever Emmanuel, Cod with us. In the joy of Christ's holy birth, Fr. John Kumse - Pastor Dragi farani in prijatelji župnije Marije Vnebovzete! Radost svetu! Mir na zemlji! Nebeški mir! Ne bojte se! Kako pogosto med temi Božičnimi prazniki slišimo odmev teh besed tolažbe in radosti. Toda za pravi mir, pravo radost, pravi pogum in upanje moramo osredotočiti naše praznike in naše življenje na Jezusa Kristusa.
