“MRS. PRISLAND’S BOOK... . . . combines the pleasing with the useful. To the older generations of American Slovenians, it should he a proud record of their father’s achievements; to the younger generations and those yet to come, an example to follow; and to all who read it, a source of information and pleasure.” Frank J. What if he arrives at college too young to grow a beard? Selected- Anonymous REV. CLAUDE OKORN, OFM: THE HISTORY OF THE CROSS You see it in homes, you see it in the churches. It adorns monuments, flags and lieros’ medals. Some people wear it as an emblem in their lapels. Centuries before Christ died it was a symbol widely known throughout the ancient world. The Egyptians called it “canob” after a T-shaped instrument used to measure the annual rise of the Nile on whose bounty the life of the nation depended. For other nations of the east it was an “urani” and took the shape of two pieces of wood with handles. By rubbing the two sticks together, the ancients kindled the sacred fire. As early as 1225 B. C. Greek worshippers of Bacchus offered cakes of flour with the figure of the cross imprinted 011 them. The swastika or twisted cross which became a symbol of terror in the 20th century appears on the oldest medallions of the Buddhists and was a mystical good omen in many Hindu sects. The cross was used as an instrument of national punishment in the time of Abraham. As a gallows it was familiar to the Egyptians, Africans, Macedonians, Greeks and Romans. To various people it lias meant a symbol of eternal life, productive power, or the life-giving qualities of the sun. For Christians around the world the cross is the symbol of their faith. It was on the Roman cross at Golgotha where Christ died, only to rise again three days later, so that, according to the Bible “who so ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The early Christians portrayed Christ as the Good Shepherd, sometimes carrying a cross instead of a crook. From this evolved the custom of representing His people as sheep or lambs. By the end of the 6th century the first form of crucifix showed the Lamb represented on the cross itself. Crucifixes came to be widely distributed by the Church as aids to devotion. In the new world the Spaniards conquered New Spain in the name of the cross. But they were astonished to find the holy emblem of tlieir faith in the temples of the Aztecs. Colossal stone monuments throughout Mexico attest to an Indian civilization which adored crosses similar in design to the Greek, Latin and Maltese forms, (to be continued) PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of Br. 95, So. Best wishes. ______________Corinne Leskovar No. 5, Indianapolis, Ind.— In November we had our final meeting for the year 1968. After all reports were made and letters read we had election of officers. The same officers were re-elected. They are President, Sylvia Stanfield; Vice President, Mary Markich; Treasurer, Sophie Turk; Recording Secretary, Dolores Konechnik; Auditors: Leona Bayt and Josephine Tomasetig; Reporters: Hermina Bruder and Julie Zupančič. Mrs. Mary Luzar was elected to be our 1969 Mother of the Year. A final tribute was paid to our sister, Mary Somrak, who passed a-way on November 10th. Although she was 83 years old she went to church every day and came to all of our meetings. She was a faithful member and went with us to the Pilgrimage to Lemont every year until she was bedridden two years ago. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family, Sophie Turk, Hedwig Mahoney, and her son, Victor Somrak. Our deepest sympathy also goes to John Mumaugh. His wife Sophie Mumaugh, our president for the year No. 2, Chicago, III. Bowling News. As the Chicago S.W.U. bowling league rolled into February, Marquette Service Station bowlers found themselves with an enviable cushion of five games over their closest competitors. As of Jail. 28th, they had a record of 41 wins and 22 losses. Reliance Federal ran into some trouble during January, but managed to hold onto second place with 36 wins and 27 losses. However, it is a very slim lead, because third place Zefran Home has 35 wins and 28 losses. Dr. Grill (33-30) remained in fourth place, with Barbara’s Beauty Shop (32 21) falling to fifth. M. Buikema’s 524 series highlighted individual bowling efforts during the month. It was 80 pins over her 148 average. A. Preskar was close behind with a 502 series, 79 pins over average. L. Zefran, a 116 average bowler, came up with a 419 series—-71 pins over. C. Gospo’s 501 series was 66 pins over her 145 average. Yours truly managed to come up with a 213 game and a 486 series—66 pins over average. (Three weeks later I barely eked out a 344 series—85 pints under. How’s that for consistency?) As usual, there were quite a few railroads and splits picked up during January: M. Zahorsky, 3-10 and 2-7-10; E. Kroschel, B. Jakubowski, A. Leben, M. Stuck, L. Ovnik, M. Rein-holz, A. Persa, S. Gorka, 3-10; M. Zefran, L. Zefran, 2-7; G. Niedzielko, D. Ceska, M. Zufan, 5-7; A. Burns, S. Melissa, 5-10; E. Statkus, 5-6; M. O-merza, 2-3-10; H. Fitzgerald, 4-7-9; S. Rada, A. Fingrhut, 6-7-10; C. Gospo, 5-810. See you next month! Barbara Zurek 1964 entered into her final rest after a long siege of illness. Although she was very ill she never complained about her illness, but instead worried about her mother, who is in a nursing home. May the souls of our deceased rest in peace. Speedy recovery to Julia Zupančič who was in the hospital. Also to all our members who are shut-ins or who have been ill. We had our Christmas party early this year and our husbands were No. 20, Joliet, III. Bowling News. As in the past, the teams are all reaching for first place honors. Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Northwest Recreation Club have been tied for first place for 4 weeks, Bluth’s Sausage is right behind in 3rd place and Sheps D X Service Station in 4th. In 5th is the American Slovenian Home and in the basement we have Merichlca’s Restaurant. We have several girls who bowled a 500 series. They are Jo Mlakar 568, high this season so far and Millie Ellena, 512. Millie bowled her first 200 game and 500 series all in one night! Good for her! Marge Gasperich, 514, Vickie Bernlckas, 506, Theresa Papesli, 511 and Gen Klain-sek, 505 were other champs. Agnes Verbiscer and Jo Mlakar have been picking up some nice splits along with Virginia Guertin. By the way, Virginia bowled a game of 89 — shame on you, Virg! Fran McCarthy, Millie Ellena, Mary Rezick, Kay Sukle, Dorothy Jaksetich, Jo Sumic and Marge Wajchert also picked up some beauties. Thanks again to all the subs for helping out. Nice to see Mary Rud-man on the alleys again. Evelyn Gregory and Theresa Papesh just returned from a 4 week vacation in Acapulco, lucky girls! Remember, our Spring Banquet will be April 7th. The S.W.U. Bowling Tournament is this month, and anyone who wishes to participate should please contact one of the officers for more information. Well, girls, that’s it for now. Keep knocking down those pins! Happy Easter to all. See you next month. _____________ Gen Klainsek, Reporter the guests of honor. Everyone had a wonderful time. The food was delicious. So nice to see our dear friend and neighbor, Frank Velikan Sr. up and around again. Best of health and luck to you and yours always. Speedy recovery to Carrie and Sophie. Hoping to see all of you on our trip to Lemont in July. We extend wishes to all members of Br. 7 for a happy pre-Easter season and when that wonderful day rolls around, may you all enjoy it with your families. To all members of Zveza, may God bless you all! Josephine Gostisha, sec. No. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — Let’s hope the bad weather which made us call off our January meeting does not come again on a meeting night as most of us rely on that day to pay dues and because we do have a short enjoyable social game after the meeting. Those who attend look forward to the fun and luncheon. Don’t forget we are having our first social event, a card party on March 2'3rd at the Lily Club, 2222 W. National Ave., starting at 2 p. m. Let’s all plan to attend and help to make a success of this event. Those of you who are interested in taking the week-end trip to the Lady of Snows Shrine at Belleville, Illinois, please contact your president, Mrs. Plesko, 384-4705, so she can get transportation arranged for you. It is a very worthwhile weekend trip. The year also started off with the loss of two of our members, Anne Sasse and Mary Krznarich (Ras-par). Our sympathies go to their families and we will miss Mary as she was one of our regular attendants and a very loyal member, partaking in most of the trips and events. Here’s hoping too, that all our sick members get back to good health; the latest on our sick is Mrs. Berelc. Hope she is out of St. Joseph’s hospital and I’m sure •she would appreciate the good wishes from her friends and the membership. I am sorry that we have not been able to get the books to date, but the last time I called the publishers they promised to have them by the middle of the month of February. We are sure to have them for the card party, so you will be able to go home with one of these fine books which should be a valued part of every Slovenian’s library. Congratulations to grandmother, Frances Plesko, whose daughter-in-law gave her a new grandson. Please remember to give me a call if you know of anyone’s illness, or other news, concerning our members. Mary Dezman No. 13, San Francisco, Cal. — December meeting of Br. No. 13 and Christmas party was well attended, gifts were exchanged and everyone was in good spirits. Winke, 415 No. 89th Street, Wauwatosa, Wis. The wedding took place at the 11 a. m. Mass at St. John the Evangelist church with a special chorus from Mercy High School singing the Mass. The bride is a former member of that group. The bridal reception was held in the evening at the Milwaukee Elks Club. Wells St., in Milwaukee. To the newlyweds and their families, heartiest felicitations. Mrs. January 2nd meeting had to be postponed because most of the members were suffering from the “Hong Kong” Flu and another tragedy occurred in our midst which left us helpless and sad. My nephew, Joseph Vincent Scoff, son of my sister Rose Scoff was accidentally killed Christmas Eve. February Gth meeting was to be the installation of the new officers followed with a social. Don’t forget to work hard for the Presidents’ Membership Campaign, so try and bring a new member to our next meeting. Slovenian Chapel Fund is still o-pened for more donations and send to Frank Turek in Wickliffe, Ohio. Our prayers go out to all our sick members and for their speedy recovery and good health and happiness is wished to everyone for 19G9. Margaret Fager, Recording Secy Mrs. Noel J. Winke Gallun and the new Mrs. Winke are long-standing members of Br. No. 42'. Our best. R. No. 13, San Francisco, Cal. — Installation of officers for 19G9 took place at our Feb. 5th meeting. Due to the holidays, we had to by-pass January. President, Dorris Lovrin promised a full and productive year. Dorris is a hard worker, so let’s all back up our president and make 1969 our greatest year. Rose Bianco and daughter, Carol, are planing a visit to Rome and Europe this summer. We are all excited for Rose and know she will have much to tell when vacation is over. Rome is such a gorgeous city. Mary Slanec was so pleased to have been mentioned in Znrja and feels this keeps her in touch with sister members throughout the USA. Mary Rauh was excitedly talking about the future marriage in May of her granddaughter to the son of Sophie Troya. Two nice families being united. To “Babe” and Will Rotto — Sophie and Rudy Troya, parents of the happy couple, congratulations! Let’s pray for a successful term of office for our President, Richard M. Nixon. We hope God will enlighten him so his path will be a right one, not too much strain. Let’s hope our students will all come to their senses and realize they are being USED for a purpose of power. It’s too bad when people with so much can’t be happy. Theresa Lampe is back home having left the religious order. Terry is State President Rose Scoff’s niece. We hope Terry will find happiness and contentment In her new life. Congratulations to Anna Pachak, State President of Colorado, Kansas and Missouri for having gained so many new members. I have kept a correspondance with Anna and her suggestions and help have really been appreciated. Anna Is a real worker and according to the late Bara Kramer, Anna is Zveza! I am proud to tell you I received Bara Kramer’s Zveza ring as a gift from her daughter, Mary Wheeler. It was a surprise and delight. Mary also gave me Bara’s collection of Zarja’s — and If you are interested in seeing some old times, stop a-round. Thanks Mary, I’ll treasure your generous gifts always. Success to all In 1969. At this time the officers for the year were installed by our assistant pastor, Rev. Roman Malovasich. Condolences to the Dolinšek family on the loss of their mother, Mary Dolinšek. She resided on Bluff St and is survived by 6 daughters, a son and three sisters. Mrs. Dolinšek was born at Krka In Slovenia Aug. 14, 1893 and joined the branch Nov. 1928, recommended by the late Antonia Struna. She was well-known In our circles and was a member of various societies. Her burial was from St. Joseph’s church and was laid to rest at St. Joseph cemetery. Mary Dolinšek was the second 40 year member to pass away this year, the first being Ursula Ambrose. Mrs. Dolinšek suffered a lingering illness and was under the care of her daughter, Mary Hlrsch at the time of her death. Our condolences to member, Mayme Kren of Hickory St., who lost her husband, Fred. He was well-liked and well-known in the community, and was employed at the Joliet Herald News. May they rest in peace and receive their eternal rewards. At our meeting, books were distributed among the officers who are to dispose of them. Numerous prizes will be given upon selling of the books. The proceeds are to be used In purchasing the book written by our S. W.U. Founder, Mary Prisland, entitled From Slovenia to America and is about the history of the folks in Slovenia and America. It has already drawn wide interest. Upon the recommendation of our secretary, Olga Ancel, the books purchased will be donated to various libraries in Joliet and thus will be on hand for Joliet students to learn something about our history and heritage. Many American students and people have never heard of us Slovenes — they take us for Slovaks, etc. Now, having these books will teach them who we are and what we stand for. Anyone interested in the history books can obtain one from our secretary or from your reporter. If you members wish to help us dispose of the award booklets, please come in contact with any of the officers. It was reported at the meeting that Mrs. Anna Lenovich was ill and in the hospital. Mr. Jevitz is at present Superintendent for the Forest Preserve and was elected 12 times for this position. John is honorary president for the Old Times Baseball and organizer, numerous times showing his friendship to our branch. We can always count on his loyal support and advice. He is active in all church doings and in the community he has shown continual support in all worthwhile projects. It is time that now, when John needs our support, we show it by voting for him, so make a big X in front of his name on the Republican ballot, for Town Clerk. Sister Kuk-man was recently dismissed from the hospital. Our best to them both. Our next meeting is April 13th at 2:45 p. m. at our regular meeting place. Please try to attend. A blessed and Happy Easter to all! Christine Konte, Pres. No. 68, Fairport Harbor, O. — Our first meeting for the new year was held on January 19th at the American Slovene Club, at Fairport Harbor. R was very encouraging to see such a large turn out of members as it was our election meeting with the following ladies elected: Presi- dent, Mrs. Jennie Mohorčič; Vice President, Mrs. Rose Bradack; Sec. and Treas., Mrs. Mary Grzely; Rec. Sec., Mrs. Frances Ulle; Reporters: Slovenian, Mrs. Angela Godec, American, Mrs. Frances Ulle; Auditors: Mrs. Frances Ulle, Mrs. Molly Juzna, Mrs. Carol Satej; Sergeant at Arms, Mrs. Jennie Troha. Rev. Fr. George Olejnyik is to continue being our spiritual Advisor. It was a very busy meeting with quite a few interesting plans being made for the coming year. I know that everyone is going to look forward to our meetings. Well, it seems that the flu bug has departed from this area, and everyone is feeling well again. The afternoon was spent socially and a popular game was played, the refreshments were served by Mrs. Frances Skrabec and her daughter Mrs. Frances Ulle. So with this good beginning let’s hope that the New Year will be equally as good and that we’ll all strive to be closer together. May all my good wishes go to everyone and good luck to our officers, especially to our president, Mrs. Jennie Mohorčič, who has tried so hard to make our branch one of the very best. So until next time, God bless you all! Frances Ulle, Reporter No. 73, Warrensville, O. — As they say: baby, it’s cold out these nights! But, nevertheless, some brave souls came to our meeting. We opened with prayer and then heard a very excellent report on finances by treasurer, Agnes Walters. A very fine job. Also, Agnes joined the SWU 23 years 22 years ago, Jan. 6, 194G and 15 of these years she has been our very able treasurer. We all hope and pray many more years for her with us. We installed all the officers. Good health and good luck is wished to all. We talked about the card party on April 18th and then closed the meeting with prayer for all our sick and deceased members. Please remember to pay your dues to our secretary, L. Eppley. Irene Chase’s daughter,. Sharon, was on the Dean’s list at Kent State College. Congratulations, Sharon, a very fine job. Keep up your good work. Just heard today that Irene is now a grandmom for the first time, a baby girl to daughter Mary Ann. We all pray they are well. Also heard many of our members were visiting Florida over the winter and hope they all had fun. Happy St. Pat’s Day to all. Betty Bayus, Reporter No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. We were a happy group that met on Tuesday, Jan. 2»Stli. The attendance was one of the best yet with 15 members and 5 guests. Now, if we can keep this GOLDEN “50” YEARS 'i>. */*■ Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rogel of 1G60 W. She often surprised the ladies by bringing her delicious potica and apple strudels. We all want to wish Anna and Joe Rogel many more years of health and happiness. L. E. up and increase our membership, we can all feel proud of our group. We must thank our pastor for letting us use the lounge of Linsmeyer Hall. It was very cozy. We had our election of officers and the same slate was re-elected with the exception of our secretary. The ofifcers are: President, Mary Zakrajšek; Vice-President, Anne Ma-zar; Treasurer Christine Meyer and Secretary Katie Stimac replacing Marian Dergantz who declined because she wished to have someone else take over. Marian was secretary for the past 6 years and we thank her most sincerely for a job well done. Frances Meglich, Reporter No. 92, Crested Butte, Colo. — Our monthly meeting was held on Febr. 2nd at the home of our Vice-President, Mrs. Eva Lubin in Gunnison. The meeting was opened by our President, Mrs. Myrna Krizmanich, with a prayer. We had 12 members present. The minutes for the month of January and the treasurer’s report were read and approved. Under new business we discussed plans for a new money raising project to help our treasury. Also we are hoping to get some new members. Everyone is urged to bring a guest to our next meeting. The meeting was then closed with a prayer. Cards were played with prizes being awarded to Irene Trautman and Carole McDaniel for high score and Shirley Falsetto and Margaret Malenšek for low score. We were then served delicious refreshments with a Valentine theme by Eva Lubin and Sharon Lubin. Carole McDaniel, Reporter No. 95, So. Chicago, III. — I believe it would be well to remind our members that we are now conducting our meetings at Margaret Doherty’s place 2858 E. 96th St., so drop in and attend one of our meetings. Our February meeting was extraordinarily a busy one, with a full house, to say the least, that the future of our branch appears to be continuing to go forward. As always, at this meeting the program for the year was announced. Members also voted to repeat the complete slate of officers for the year ahead, and Ann Sertich volunteered to take the kitchen duties. Thanks ever so much Ann, this will be a great help to me. The most important election to come up for approval was that of Barbara Sambol, 9334 Muskegon Ave., to be our Mother of the Year. Congratulations! Evelyn Driscoll willingly accepted the burden again to take charge of our once a year money-making project which will be held on May 17th. May we ask that each member accept a book and make your returns as soon as possible. My only hope is that we will achieve the same degree of success as in previous years; this remains to be seen when the final returns are in. On our sick list we have Frances Zburin and sorry to announce that she has been hospitalized; please pray for her quick recovery. There is much rejoicing these days in our members’ homes when Mr. and Mrs. William (Ann) Pave welcomed a new grandson, Jeffrey, the proud parents being William and Carol Pave, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Ann) Kompare welcomed their second grandson, Derel Edward, the proud parents being Dr. and Mrs. Edward (Maria) Kompare. Yours truly and my husband are delighted to announce the wonderful news that we have a baby girl in the family at last, born to our daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Jan) Beroich. She is their first, and the little darling’s name is Laura Lynn. I am only happy for this opportunity to add my expression of best wishes to the new mommies and daddies that they find satisfaction and fulfillment In the new role as proud parents, and may they enjoy hanpi-nes and good health for many years to come. When the business portion of our meeting ended, we enjoved a table decorated in a Valentine theme and hard-to-resist goodies, donated by the following ladies: Amelia Cuzella, Po-lonia and Mary Ashenbrenner, Julie Hanson, and Ann Hlacer. Cash was donated to the treasury by the following: ($2) Mary Ashenbrenner and Ann Sertich, ($1) Sophie Barbich, Matilda Cacich, Inez Carney, Manda Jergovich, Julie Hanson, Mary Malcic, Anna Nelson, Katherine Rajcich, Fran Seabloom, Eva Starcevich, and Helen Zeffiro. Games were played, and the prizes were donated by Evelyn Driscoll, Mildred Poropat and yours truly. Many thanks for your generous contributions ladies. (To' be contiuned) Mildred James, Pres. No. 100, Fontana, Calif. — Our branch proudly presents its officers for 19G9. We are in accord that work done by them will be outstanding, so yours truly herewith is the first to go on record, loud and clear that the same officers remain for the year, 1969! Hear! Hear! They are Pres., Jean Kurilich, Vice Pres.; Mary Evanich; Sec.—Treas., Mary Omaitz; Rec. Sec., Faye Vide-gar; Sick Comm., Rose Krainik and Mary Mayzak; Auditors: Gertrude Rupert and Marie Arnesan. Let’s get behind our officers and give them all the help they need. A very diligent worker and an exemplary member has been chosen as Mother of the Year for Fontana. Your reporter can at long length extoll the many virtues that Faye Vi-degar possesses, but suffice it to say that her nomination is most pleas-surable to this humble scribe. Much happiness, Faye, now and always! Hello, Josie Krizantz, we’re glad you transferred from Braddock, Pa. to our branch here in sunny California. I guess you got tired of shoveling snow, too. Welcome! We have a new member, Walter Jasina the 3rd. His grandma saw to it that he was enrolled in the Zveza almost before he had his first cry! Mary Jasina is the proud grandma. I’ll bet a year’s supply of paper and stamps that she’ll spoil the Iwiby and blame it on the parents. We are happy to let you all know that Mary Videgar is doing nicely after her surgery. God looks after His own. Blessings on all our sick members and may they soon be well. Birthday celebrants for Feb. were Dorothy Petrich, Teresa Paro and yours truly — boy! don’t these years fly? I never thought I would be 16 years old and here I am looking cockeyed at 60! To know what what I know now and be 16 again! WOW! Hey, Susel, how about that? Loretta Videgar was married to Wayne Butler Jan. 25th. You can be sure that she was a lovely bride. Much happiness is wished to the young married couple. We all enjoyed the goodies and cucamonga fruit juice! A little bird told me that there is a possibility that wedding bells will ring for Mary Reich of Br. 2. I hope the little bird doesn’t turn out to be an old crow cause this is one wedding I wouldn’t want to miss. IE the above is true, consider my passage to Chicago booked! Happy anniversary to the J. Pier-mans and E. Ciszaks of Chicago — may you celebrate many more! Say, if there are any Slovenian bachelors of sweeping snow, consider this invitation: come to Fontana and sweep around the dance floor with our lovely Slovenian women. A lovely woman is much better than an old shovel any old day! See you next month, God willing. Edith Drawenek, Rep. No. 101, Bedford Hgts, O. — Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Picone. They are grandparents for the 31st time to baby Julie Ann! Sorry to hear that Ethel Rittwage was hospitalized for observation. Hope you are up and feeling better, Ethel. Ann Swaney’s little granddaughter was recently hospitalized for an emergency heart operation. God bless this little angel and grant her health. She’s just a little tot of eight months. Let’s all remember her in our prayers. Ann reported that she is coming a-long better. We all missed Barbara Orlosky at our “Valentine Party” in Febrauary. Hope you are feeling better. Hostesses were Lucille Picone and Stella Hajek. Dorothy Matjašič, Reporter No. 103, Washington, D. C. Could it be that our branch has found two ladies willing to supervise our junior activities? Perhaps so! Mary F. Mejac and Mary Lou Tersellic undertook the Epihany program, presented at. the January meeting, with amazing results. Their creativity, enthusiasm and interest in our younger members is just what the branch and the youngsters need. We hope Mimi and Mary Lou will accept this position and undertake future projects which are geared to the young and which will encourage them to participate in the branch activities, familiarizing them with Slovenian traditions. In Slovenia, at the turn of the century, programs consisting of plays, song and dance were an Integral part of every community. Young peoplo would travel miles to rehearse and perform for cultural activities. How fortunate that this aspect of our heritage has been repeated here in America. Every large Slovenian community has preserved these traditions and continue in the same vein as their forefathers. We, too must pass on to our young, the treasures of their heritage. What can you offer to this future generation? Make a contribution in time, interest, information, support. No effort is considered ‘too small”. Each member is a storehouse of knowledge and experiences. By delving into ourselves and bringing these ideas into the open, all may benefit. Speak to our program chairman, Miss Helen Kroteč, (Du 76959). Participants in the Epihany program were: Lydia Bevec, flute, solo; Andre Bevec, accordian solo; Nativity scene enacted by Helen Mejac (Mary) Rick Terselic (Joseph), Franc Chokel, Andre Bevec and Peter Mejac (Three Kings). The choir consisted of Susan Terselic, Maria Mejac, Lydia Bevec, Mary F, Mejac and Tillie Ausich. Mr. Richard Terselic accompanied on the accordian and Mary Lou Terselic presided as Mistress of Ceremonies. We are indeed appreciative to Rev. S. Ceglar and Miss Helen Krotec who completed the program with interesting impromptu presentations on the significance of the Magi. Elections for Mother of the Year were held with the members choosing our secretary, Mary Frances (Mimi) Mejac for this honor. All members extend their congratulations to this loyal charter member and the mother of three lovely children. More about Mary will follow in the May issue which is dedicated to the Mothers from all SWU branches. Another feature of the January meeting was the installation of officers for G8-G9. We congratulate the officers and look forward to a successful year for the branch. There in much enthusiasm in this group and we hope for many successful projects and interesting meetings. Refreshments for this occasion were elaborate and delicious. Chocolate cake, pound cake, fruit squares and cookies tempted us from the attractively arranged sweet table. Hostesses for January were Helena Špacapan, Matilda Terselic and Matilda Ausich. Thank you ladies for the coffee, punch and sweets. We certainly did enjoy them, and commend you on the elegant arrangements. As March blows its way into April, unveiling the beauty of nature’s springtime, let us remember that, “Nature is the living, visible garment of God.”—Enjoy its beauty to the fullest this spring. Irene M. Planinšek No. 105, Detroit, Mich. Jan. meeting was held at my home and we had a nice turn out of 17 members. I few of the regulars were absent, due to illness. We all hope and pray for a speedy recovery and that they join us at our meeting. On Feb. 23rd we met at Ann Anzick’s home. We welcomed a new member, Frances Seamon; very nice to have you here as a member of our group, do Ann Senko’s daughter said “I do” on Jan. 31st. It was a twilight wedding at Holy Name church and the wedding seception was at the Slovene National Home on John R. We certainly wish them both many years of happiness and good health. The hostess prize was won by Ann McGee. It was nice to have Ann back looking well and happy: also Julia Panzica. On Feb. lGth Julia Panzica celebrated her birthday and on March 16th, our secretary, Katherine Musick will celebrate hers. Congratulations to both of them! We hope to see all of our old members back at the next meeting. Take care, all of you, and God bless you all. Your Reporter, Stephanie Hometz KOLLANDER ANNOUNCES: LOWEST FARES EVER! Če so izšle knjige o drugih dekanijah, mi ni znano. Knjiga “Dekanija Gornjegrajska” obsega 237 strani z 1G5 slikami. Nato so nastale zapreke. Pisala sem, telefonirala, osebno šla do njih in vsakikrat sem prejela zagotovilo: “Storili bomo kar bo v naši moči, da knjige gotovo dobite v par tednih. — Na Lawrence Welk TV programu so peli pesmico, “All I’ll get are promises, promises . . Časopisi so prinašali dolge članke v katerih so opozarjali ljudi o škodljivosti kajenja. Ljudje so imeli že polna ušesa tega trobljenja proti kajenju. 3. MAREC PRVA OBLETNICA v Antonia Berce V božjem miru zdaj počivaj draga, napozabna nam, v nebesih rajsko srečno uživaj do svidenja na vekomaj. Ako članicam ni do sodelovanja, čemu naj se me same pehamo. Rose je utrjena v trpljenju, vdana v božjo voljo, razumna in inteligentna, resnično velika žena (great lady). V Slovenski dvorani dobite izvrstno kosilo naših izvežbanih kuharic in zabavo za mlade in stare. Dom je okrašen s krasnimi umetnimi slikami naše lepe Slovenije. Ob koncu še dodam pesem moje rodne grude, na katero me vedno veže moj boleči spomin: SPOMIN Minula leta so negdanja, ko zapustila sem moj rojstni dom; tam v Beli Krajini ob zeleni trati, so solze ml zalivale oči. Kako spomine mi budi, dom predragi, vrt cvetoči; očetova pristava, temni log, domača hiša, nageljni in rožmarin. Oče, mati, bratje, sestre, so vsi šli v prerani grob; a s srcem mojim so mi vzeli, ko prodali so mi vse. Letos bomo imele dinner kar doma v našem društvenem domu, to bo dne 25. maja skupno s klubom skupnih društev. Vse tiste, ki bodo želele iti na ta dinner, ko imajo še nekaj denarja v good time blagajni, jih bo poklicala Mrs. Rozi Mikovič. Card party bo pa v jeseni dne 12. oktobra. V društveno blagajno je darovala tega večera, Mrs. Plevnik in v good time blagajno naslednje sestre: Angela Kern, Paula Adams, Vera Kraj-čič, Mary Kircher in Frances Plut. Odbornice so sledeče: Preds. Emma Planinšek, podpreds. Josephine Muster, tajnica Olga Ancel, zapisnikarica Josephine Erjavec, blagajničarka Josephine Sumic in nadz. Frances Hubert, Theresa Marentich in Emma Nosse. Rediteljica je Theresa Mu-hich in duhovni vodja Monsignor M. •T. Butala. Olga Ancel. Vas vse pozdravlja, Josephine Erjavec Št. 41, Cleveland, O.— Na žalost moram poročati, da smo januarja meseca zgubile dve naši sestri, Jennie Sernel in Cecilijo Debenjak. Žalujočim sorodnikom in prijateljem pokojnih, izrekamo naše iskreno sožalje. Rose Strumble in Mary Germ. Tem in vsem katere bolehate, želimo popolnega okrevanja in najboljšega zdravja v bodočnosti. Naj ji bo ohranjen lep spomin. Sedaj sta oba srečna in rešena teh zemskih križev in težav. Le žena mati je o-stala, zelo potrta in žalostna na svetu. Težko bo preboleti to bridko žalost. Naj snivata blaženi mir in večna luč naj jima sveti. Mary Kenik pa naše globoko sožalje. Dne 5. febr. sta praznovala 40 letnico zakonskega življenja dobro poznana Mr. in Mrs. Leo Krešovič. Skupaj $9.00. Ko so bili drugi bolni sem pomagala in stregla njim. Ses. Gombač je sedaj doma in bo vesela, če jo katera članica obišče, saj bo vzela precej časa pred-no popolnoma ozdravi. Njen naslov je: 22300 Arms Ave., Euclid. Sest. Čas in prostor bo pravočasno objavljen. Vsem uradnicam in članicam posebno pri podr. 49 želim vso srečo in zdravje v tem letu. Mary Stusek, preds. Njen opis bo v manjski Zarji. Danes je Groundhog Day. In najlepši pozdrav dični organizaciji. Antonia Kostelec, preds. Št. 68, Painesville, Pa. — Zopet so me članice pripravile k delu za pisalno mizo. Pred nekaj leti sem odložila to delo. Dobro vodite organizacijo in smo vse zadovoljne. Pozdravljene vse v uradu in vse čitateljice Zarje. Angela Godec Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Vreme i-mamo tukaj še vedno mrzlo in dovolj snega. Lep pozdrav gl. odbornicam in vsem članicam. Mary Tomsic, preds. Tukaj bova 2 do 3 meseca. Druga seja bo dne 15. maja in prosim članice, dajte si zapomniti ta dan in pridite. The Catholic high schools, too, have weekly collections with a greater stress during Lent for monies from students’ allowances. All of these projects which provide food, clothing and medicine, are a part of the second Vatican council’s call to youth to build a better world —to be a part “of the joys and the hopes, the griefs and the sorrows of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and the sorrows of the follower of Christ . . Despite the human race’s abundance of wealth, resources and economic power, “a huge proportion of the world’s citizens are still tormented by hunger and poverty, while countless numbers suffer from total illiteracy.” Because of its openmindedness and deep concern for Christ’s brothers, youth will overcome and abolish every type of discrimination, whether social, cultural, w'hether based on sex, Have trouble with spelling?
