As you can see from the photo above, after two meetings we were able to get a full committee - and a strong one at that. Congratulations to you all - you have a big year ahead of you, especially with the "40th" in November. I think if these people are prepared to put in so much time, effort and commitment to SDM, the least the members can do is support them and let them know we are behind them. Don't wait for a telephone call to come and help - any work that needs to be done is not for the Committee - it is for SDM - and who does SDM belong to? - the members! Even if we are not in the Committee, we should still have the same interest and dedication to make sure things are running well. The members of this year's Committee range widely in age and experience and all have different interests in the Club - so all members should be in good contact with most of them and up to date with what is •happening. Don't wait to be begged!
Our "Slovenian Stork" continues to visit, which means that "zero population" means nothing to Slovenians. Since the last Vestnik, to the best of our knowledge the stork has brought us 3 babies.
V	On the 4th July, Zorka (Stavar) and Ian Bennet were blessed with another baby boy, Jarrod Tyson, weighing 81b 2oz. Ray and Kaila are delighted with their baby brother.
V	Then on the 1st of July the Krajne family was blessed with their first grandson. Michelle and Lojzek Kranjc became the proud parents of little Daniel James.
V	On the 31st of July the stork came back to the family of Mirka & Eddie Kodila with their first son, Matthew. Big sister Samantha is very excited with her new brother. Congratulations to you all!

Speaking of age and experience - two of the Committee members have recently turned 50. First we had Frank Plut hit the big "50" followed closely by our "El Presidente", Karl Beve. Both celebrated in a big way with their relatives and friends. At Mr Bevc's party, he even had a Slovenian "Marilyn Monroe" sing "Happy Birthday Mr President" to him, and she was absolutely wonderful. (Mrs Gomizel, you were great - even better than Marilyn singing to President Kennedy!)
Another member reaching a pinnacle in his life is Peter Conlan who is now officially "over the hill" he hit the big 40 but is showing no obvious signs of wear or tear.
To all of you, and to anyone else who has celebrated and we don't know about it, "Happy Birthday" and may you have many more wonderful years with your families (and at SDM, of course).
We all look forward to hearing about the babies, but unfortunately sick people also go to hospital. Get well wishes go to Francka Potočnik who was recently in hospital and Karl Fekonja who is also not feeling the best.
An extra special "get well" also goes out to my brother, Kevin "Herbie" Hervatin from his family & friends - we all hope your "mystery illness" starts solving itself and disappears for good!
To any other "sickies", especially the flu sufferers - we all hope you're better soon and back at work or with your friends at SDM.

STIRIDESETA OBLETNICA SDM
Skoraj že trka na vrata pomembni datum. Naše društvo je v pričakovanju velikega jubileja. Bivši člani upravnega odbora so ponudili pomoč pri predpripravah, kakor tudi ostalo članstvo, da bi ta rojstni dan skupnega truda čim lepše praznovali. Poleg prijavljenih sodelavcev, naprošamo vsakogar, ki lahko nudi svojo pomoč, da se nam prijavi, tako bo delo uspešnejše in lažje.
The 40th Anniversary of SDM is fast approaching and "now is the time for all good members to come to the aid of the Club!" (Anyone who has had typing lessons will relate to that sentence.) A "40th Anniversary Sub-Committee" has been formed to take the pressure off the Management Committee and they are now forming rosters etc. for the weekend. The following is a list of people (in Slovenian and English) who have various responsibilities (and their telephone numbers) •
1°.ase ring them and let them know what you are able to do to help. People are needed to help prepare the O,ounds/building for this special occasion, work in the kitchen/dining room/barbeque during the weekend and help with various stalls. Entries are also invited for the "Cake Competition", "Art Exhibition" and "Craft Exhibition". There is something for everyone - all that is needed is member participation.

Entries must be clearly marked on back with artist's name, address, title of work and selling price. Entries must be suitably framed for hanging and be the original work of the competitor. Each artist must complete and sign an entry form and post by the 4th November, 1994 to:

Father's Day at SDM proved to be another well attended function. This is a day when we reflect and show our appreciation to our fathers and members on a very important role they play in our lives.
While busy ladies (under Darko Barba's guidance) cooked and prepared a delicious meal, dads sat back and enjoyed a special, short yet colourful, program prepared by the children of SDM's Slovenian School.
The opening of the program, in colourful Slovenian costumes, was the youngest folk group comprising Madeline Fistrič, Michael Prosenik, Michele and Amanda Hervatin, Jessica and Shannon Trinnick, Bradley Conlan, Michael McBean, James and Shaun Debelak. A delightful Jessica Trinnick bravely sang "Moj očka ima konička dva". Marie Pišotek danced a jazz ballet number to Janet Jackson's song "Rythm Nation" and with her friends, Tania and Karli, danced to the modern numbers "Move it all up" & "Hallellua". Vanessa Zorzut played 3 of her favourite pieces on the organ and the school children sang "Sonce se smeje". The children's program closed with a song "Naša četica koraka", accompanied by Victor Lampe on the button accordion, followed by a presentation of gifts to the children's fathers. All-in-all it was an outstanding performance by our youngest generation, whom we are very proud of. A big appreciation and thank you is extended to the teachers of Slovenian School and dancing, Magda Pišotek, Maria Penca & Maria Hervatin who devote so much of their valuable time to make these events such a success. Thank you ladies! The program continued with the beautiful voices of the Choir "Jakob Petelin Gallus" touring Australia from Koroška
which brought back many beautiful memories. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious dinner and continued to dance the night away to the tunes of "Lipa". Another successful and enjoyable Father's Day. Thanks to all the participants.

28th annual ball 1994
The Slovenian Association Melbourne once again celebrated an important event, its 28th Annual Ball, the highlight of the evening being the "Miss Slovenian Community Quest". This being our biggest annual events, efforts are made to encourage as many girls as possible to participate. Some are quite reluctant, but believe me it is a lot of fun and a great experience. You only have to ask this year's six contestants: Kristina Cestnik, Elizabeth Holz, Sonya Oberstar, Suzana Peklar, Samantha Penca and Michelle Sycamore. Many thanks to Samantha who kindly accepted (a threat) to replace another contestant who had to withdraw due to work commitments.
Most of the contestants have never met before, therefore as part of the preparation for this event, we organised an evening out at a comedy restaurant, compliments of SDM and an anonimous sponsor. The evening proved to be very successful and the girls had the opportunity to get to know one another and shared their ideas.
The big event was near! Beautiful gowns were purchased, hairdressers booked and every detail finalised and, let me tell you, no expense spared. Nerves were also on the rise.
Finally the big night was here. This is it...and they all looked stunning. The girls were ready to face their big debut. Contestants were seated with the judges at a round table for dinner in the dining room. The judges were Mr John Graves (representing the Shire of Eltham), Ms Zlata Seljak (representing the Commonwealth Bank Travel in Geelong and the sponsor of the 1st prize in the Raffle) and Mrs Angela Dolinšek, and did they have a difficult task facing them? The judging criteria was based on the girls' personality and ability to represent the community.
Tension was building as the girls were nervously waiting to face the big moment of introduction on stage. Short introduction and welcoming speeches were made by SDM's President, Mr Karl Beve, followed by the MCs for the evening, Andrew Fistric and myself. Background music set the scene for the right mood as the contestants were introduced in alphabetical order, presented with personal sashes by last year's Miss Slovenian Community, Miss Tanya Kutin. David Krnel escorted the girls down the stairs (he thrived on the job), where they were greeted by last year's Miss Fundraiser, Suzi Belec, who presented each girl with a beautiful bunch of flowers.
Much attention was focused on each girl as she proudly walked along the stretch of red carpet in the light of flashing cameras and video recorders, and echoing applause of their families and friends.
As soon as we had seen the 6 contestants, we were surprised by an announced late entry. With the typical Slovenian name "Špela", she made an impression with her charm and sexy legs - you had to be there to appreciate it. She was lapping up all the glory until her mother suddenly appeared and whisked her away in disgust. Laughter followed a great performance by Aleš Brgoč and Virgil Gomizel - thank you fellows.
For the finalé, the contestants gracefully walked down the aisle in pairs for our last glance, to an appropriate song by Prince called "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
The big moment arrived - the drumroll broke the silence in the hall and each contestant nervously awaited the announcement. Mr John Graves had the honor of presenting the title of "Miss Slovenian Community 1994" to Miss Suzana Peklar. "Miss Fundraiser" was well deserved by Samantha Penca and "Miss Runner Up Fundraiser", also well earned, to Sonya Oberstar. The winners were presented with their gifts, congratulations and, yes, cameras were flashing again!

zavidljive uspehe. Obiskali so jo univerzitetni strokovnjaki, vladni predstavniki etničnih državnih oddelkov za vzgojo, učitelji jezikov, predstavniki raznih knjižnih ustanov in podjetij, predvsem pa šolska mladina iz Sydneya in okolice. Samo predregistriranih je bilo preko 2000. Dosti večje število pa je dnevno pregledovalo razstavišče.
SLOVENSKA STOJNICA je predstavljala našo narodno jezikovno skupino v literaturi, umetnosti, glasbi, pokrajini, cvetju, zgodovini, znanosti in drugem. Mladina in starejši v narodnih nošah so pod SLOVENSKO ZASTAVO in glasbo predstavljali raznotero živahnost naše kulturne zakladnice.
Lahko smo ponosni, da smo sodelovali, na tej pomembni učni predstavitvi in s tem zabeležili našo SLOVENSKO PRISOTNOST ter vstop našega materinega jezika v svetovni pomen narodne eksistence.
Hvala pobudnici za našo prisotnost gospej Mariji Sen čar predsednici SLOVENIAN LANGUAGE TRUST FOUNDATION, vsem organizacijam (vključno SDM) kakor tudi posameznikom za moralno, fizično predvsem pa denarno podporo. Podatki so izčrpani iz knjige: "Australia's population - Trends and prospects 1993 "
Po podatkih iz omenjene knjige poročamo, da se število nezakoskih otrok stopnuje.
1992 je 24% vseh rojenih otrok bilo izven zakona. V primerjavi z letom 1972, ko je izven zakona bilo rojenih samo 10% otrok. Značilno razmerje v nezakonskem rojenju otrok je pri, kot po angleško pravimo, "de-facto relationship."
Značilno je, da se je leta 1992, 81% moških izjavilo za očete, medtem ko je 1975.1eta prevzelo odgovornost le 26% očetov.
Naraščaj nezakonskih otrok je zaradi števila neporočenih žensk in moških, ki živijo skupaj izven zakona.
Kljub temu je število porok v letu 1991 in 1992 naraslo za 883. Prva poroka za moške in ženske izpod 30 let, se po dobi daljša, kar je začelo in se stopnjuje od 1970. naprej.
1992 je povprečen moški ob poroki bil star 26,9 let, a ženska pa 24,7 let.
1971 je povprečem moški poročil ob 23,4 letu, a ženska ob 21,1 letu. Jasno je odkrito, zakaj se letna doba za zakon za moške in ženske poveča, to je ker veliko njih že itak živijo skupaj. Drugi razlogi za odlašanje zakona so, da prejmejo socialno pomoč, čakajo da dokončajo izobrazbo, nekateri gredo v svet, ker je to lažje, kot kadar
imajo družino. Eden razlog je negotovost zaposlitve a največji razlog za nekatere (moja lastna pripomba) kratek čas in neodgovornost.
Moje vprašanje: Kaj imajo izgubiti, če so v vsakem slučaju zaščiteni od državnega socilnega skrbstva?
Census ali popis leta 1991 ima na spisku 300600 parov ali 8.2%, ki živijo, kot smo doma rekli, na meter, sedaj ko so modernejši z motornimi vozili, mogoče živijo ne na meter temveč na kilometer. Karkoli je, leta 1986 je bilo takih samo 5.7%.
"De-facto" odnosi so največ med mladimi, to je 60% kjer je ženska starost od 15 do 19 let. 1990. je 44% ljudi starosti od 27 do 35 let, skupaj živelo že preden so stopili v zakon.
Na koncu bomo rekli, da ni vse tako strašno črno kot citate, saj se je življenska doba ljudi zaradi boljše zdravniške nege in življenja nasploh, zboljšala in podaljšala. Za moške povprečno 68 let v 1972 na 75 let v 1992. Za isto dobo so srečne ženske podaljšale povprečno življenje od 75 let na 80. Če računamo, da so po stari navadi ženske stopile v zakon mlajše od moškega, so obsojene biti udove za povprečno 8 let.

39. Letna Skupščina na gričku SDM / ^

Devetintrideseta skupščina SDM je za nami. Po številu nas bilo prisotnih veliko, toda ne dovolj takih, ki bi bili pripravljeni voditi društvo v 41.leto obstoja.
Veliko odbornikov pretekle poslovne dobe je želelo malo odmora in ker ni bilo na iste veliko pritiska, češ naj ostanejo. Nato je zneslo tako, da smo morali sklicati ponovno skupščino na kateri nas je bilo številčno manj, zato pa veliko več vestnih Slovencev, kateri zavedajoč se prednosti društva so bili pripravljeni sprejeti omenjeno, zelo važno odgovornost.
Ispadlo je, da skoraj vsi odpovedani so zopet pristopili v novi odbor. Neimenovani odbornik preteklega leta je ugovarjal češ, da mu niso zadosti zavijali roko za povrnitev v novi odbor. Ostal je razočaran izven istega.
Dve letni predsednik in dolgo-letni odbornik, g. Kari Beve je zopet predsednik z dvema podpredsednikoma, dvema blagajnikoma.
Pogoj za sprejem predsedniškega mesta je bil, odkriti odgovarjajočega tajnika ali tajnico katerega je tudi našel in to z čedno in prijetno mlado gospo, Sonjo Sušel, zraven tudi njenega moža Marka. Oba Sušljeva sta že velikokrat poprej pomagala pri različnih društvenih prireditvah. Pomočnica novi tajnici je, nam vsem poznana, Helena Leberjeva, delavka za slovensko skupnost v preteklosti, društvena tajnica in sedem let tajnica Zveze slovenskih organizacij Vic. Skupno s soprogom Ivom, dolga leta odgovorna odbornika in radijska napovedovalca na slovenskem programu radia 3EA. Vsi smo prijetno presenečeni, da sta Ivo in Helena Leber zopet v odboru SDM. Prepričani smo, da bo članstvo in društveni prijatelji SDM sprejeli Lebeijeva v društveno delovanje z spoštovanjem in cenitvijo, kar brez dvoma zaslužita. Lepo je od posameznikov, ko se zavedajo važnosti in odgovornosti štiridesete obletnice SDM.
Zavedajo se prisotnosti ogromnega dela, to je, naprej voditi in izročiti slovensko navado še veliko novim slovenskim pokolenjem.
Gospod Stanko Penca je bil predsednik skupščine. Bil je kapetan, kot preteklo leto, težko plavajoče ladje. Moram povdariti in če smem, osebno pohvaliti. Bil sem izrazito •presenečen ob njegovi krmilni sposobnosti. Da je bil kapetan "TITANIC" bi še danes plovila po svetovnih oceanih. Iskrena hvala, Stanko.

Last year I came to the Annual General Meeting, with the intention of joining the Committee in force, as I thought, Vice-President. I finished up with better than expected -Secretary. I told the new elected people that I am very rusty - and rusty I am. The Committee functioned excellently from the very beginning. Firstly, because the elected President was the past-President and previously long standing Committee member. He knew the position. So was the rest of the Committee. Secondly, Mr. Karl Beve is easy to get along with.
The same could be expressed of the rest of the Committee members. Permit me to say it was a pleasure to work with such a pleasant and dedicated bunch of people. Combined, we had an excellent backing from our close relatives and close friends. As for the general membership backing, I cannot express any complimentary words.
My busiest time was writing letters in Slovenian to various clubs, correspondence, invitations to members for Club functions, etc. Whenever I wanted a translation into English, fast printing, Sandra Krnel was always ready to help. Thank you Sandra. (To mention only in a few words, our office equipment is from the 1954 era.)
In the Youth building, twice a week we still have a very active playgroup of children. In the Dining Room, also twice per week - sessions of Feldenkraus are run by Stephanie, a qualified Physiotherapist. Both groups are happy with the Club provision of service from the new "housekeepers".
Sport is active in all sections. Among the most prestigious are our two Soccer Teams - under the "coachmanship" and leadership of Boris Spilar. We are all proud of Boris. The proudest of all, I am sure, are his parents - they have a right to be. The rest of our sports activities are also fairly active.
Because of new demands, we elected to change the Housekeeper, which has saved the Committee members a lot of work, especially preparing the Hall from one event to another.
Thanks again to Jana Lavrič, Sandra Krnel and Vivien Katsoulotos (Gomizel) for keeping up the quality and standard of the Vestnik. Jana and her family would have had a well deserved holiday and are now back - Jana, hopefully you are ready to get back into the Vestnik.
Thanks to our teachers Maria Penca, Magda Pišotek and Maria Hervatin, for all their effort with our children. These teachers also have a long range plan on their shoulders -especially their commitment to SDM's 40th Anniversary celebrations in November this year.
Thanks also to our long-time Librarian, Milena Brgoč. She is a regular worker in the Library (every 1st and 3rd Sunday) and also assists in preparing and purchasing food for Club events.

As is traditional, Miss Slovenian Community, Miss Fundraiser and Miss Fundraiser Runner-Up were announced at SDM's Annual Ball. Viis year we were fortunate to have six contestants participating - and what a difficult decision it must have been for the judges I won't go into telling you about the contestants or who won because Vicky Zorzut has written a separate article I would just like to say that on behalf of the members of the Slovenian Association Melbourne and the Slovenian community, a big thank you to the girls who participated to Vicky Zorzut who, with the help of Sonia Suselj spent a lot of time organising the event, Andrew Fistric (Jnr) who co-hosted with Vicky on the evening (Jana wasn t around so Andrew settled for her sister!), David Krnel for making sure the girls didn't fall down the stairs and to all the staff in the kitchen and bar who made sure that we were neither hungry nor thirsty. As usual, the flowers were arranged by Anica Smrdel. Thank you to everyone - it was a fantastic evening.

Bogata kulturna žetev v Avstraliji
Letos je verjetno pripotovalo v Avstralijo toliko kulturno zabavnih predstavnikov, da je skoraj zmanjkalo publike.
Po ŠALEŠKEM nastopu, so nas obiskali ansambel EKART, Tone KUNTNER - pesnik naše slovenske pomladi in Tone GOGALA, z predstavitvijo ANDREJA SMOLETA ZNAMENITEGA SLOVENCA. Zadnji pa so bili med nami pevci iz rojstne doline slovenskega naroda Koroške, Jakob Petelin Gallus.
Lepo je bilo, toda vsega lepega preveč naenkrat - ni v korist nikomur.
Ob takem razmišljanju se mi dozdeva primerna kitica iz Kuntneijeve, čudovite pesniške zbirke "O, DOMOVINA".
Kaj morem storiti, da bom mogel življenje čist dopolniti
in da mojih sinov in vnukov
ne bo kdaj v prihodnosti mene sram?

Osamljenim dušne težave omiljuje, ko mlade in stare bolne v domovih, okrevalnicah obiskuje.
Tudi rada malo pokramlja nobenemu v krivico in nobenega ne opravlja.
Njena še mlada dekleta slovensko govorijo, kot še nobene Slovenke, naučila ni fakulteta.

delajo brez prošenj, vedno pripravne.
Bridkostna, ljubka in nasmejana ne bo preveč, če bom zinil svetlolična, marljiva in vsem poznana.
Nastop skupine "Ekart" pri SDM
Čeravno smo v zimski sezoni v kateri ni zveznih tekmovanj in splošna aktivnost balinarjev je manjša kot v letnjlTmesecih, smo balinarji SDM odigrali prasko tekmovanje v Veneto, kakor tudi v Istri za Istra Cup • V Veneto smo vedno tekmovali v dvojkah. Dvojke SDM proti dvojkam Veneta. Rezultati takih iger so Mi največkrat v prid Veneta, kar je razumljivo. Čeravno imamo tudi mi v naši sredi dobre igralce, ima Veneto toko rečeno profesionalce, ki jih je teško premagat, Da b. te prijateljske tekme ne postale dolgočasne in neinteresantne, smo k os spremenili način tekmovanja. Sestavil, smo mešane dvojke, * sicer eden balinar SDM in e en bMin r Veneto kluba tako, da nismo tekmoval. SDM Protl Y®ne™ ampak v grupah, dvojke proti dvojkam. Imel. smo lep dan, So raspoloženje. Med tekmami so nas kratko as. e »Poker mašine", kavice in kakšna p.vrca, za zaUjuček so „as člani Veneto kluba počastili z obiln.m pr.gr.zkom SÄ> srečanje bo pri nas v SDM. Prepriča sem d, bo tudi pri nas ravno tako uspešno m prijetno saj to je ze
v naši tradiciji.
30 julija smo se zbrali v Istra klubu in tekmovali v_ trojkah za »Istra Cup». Z balinatji Istre sodelujemo ze mnogo let v dobrem razumevanju m spoštovanju. Pri njih niso potrebne »Poker mašine", da bi kratkočasile tekmovalce med igrami, časa še primanjkuje za igranje kart in šaha in za zapeti kakšno pesem. Tekmovanje je potekalo brez problemov in v prijateljskem vzdušju, kljub močnim nasprotnikom so si balinarji SDM priboril, prvo in tretje mesto.
V teku so tudi medsebojna tekmovanja grupe "A" in "B" v naši sekciji. Letos so se tudi naše ženske vrnile od dvoletnega dopusta in se tudi borijo v medsebojnem tekmovanju. Ta tekmovanja moramokončati predi balinarskim plesom, ker se na tem plesu pode h pokale zmagovalcem in s tem se zaključi balinarsko leto. 22 2 smo se balinarji SDM zbrali na letnem balinarskem sestanku, da smo razrešili stari pododbor m izvolili novega. Celoten potek je bil zelo enostaven, ker je na predlog balinarjev celoten pododbor ostal še naprej za eno
leto.
