LETO XIX—ŠT. 2 FEBRUARY, 1947. VOL. XIX—NO. 2 iz življenja za Življenje — Rev. M. Kebe SLOVENSKA ZENSKA ZVEZA. Mati pozna potrebe svoje okolice bolje, kakor vsak drugi. Mi hočemo živeti v miru s prijateljem in nasprotnikom. Take intrige razganjajo narod izpred cerkvenih vrat. Sheboygan, Wisconsin, 18. oktobra, 1944. S tem upamo, da bo Zvezi škodljiva razprava v javnosti, enkrat za vselej zaključena — ALBINA NOVAK JOSEPHINE ERJAVEC ZAKLJUČEK JUBILEJNE KAMPANJE RESULTS OF THE JUBILEE CAMPAIGN V kampanji smo pridobile 360 novih članic. Kvote so dosegla podružnice: 3, 2, 79, 95 in 20. Predsednice in tajnice, prosim upoštevajte ta opomin. General: “O, vso Francijo? Ravno. 217!” je bil točen generalov odgovor. * Kako se staramo? — Če smo otožni, sitni, boječi, nevoščljivi in sovražni. To zariše v obraz gube, zmanjša tek, oslabi prebavo otrdi žile ter počasi zastruplja telo. — Pravi zdravnik. Danes so Indijci v jako žalostnem položaju. Irci so miroljuben in svobodoljuben narod. ZBOROVANJE ŽENA V SO. KORTRIGHT, N. Y. ry BLIŽANJE žen iz različnih dežel in narodov je jako t-1 potreben in važen korak za splošen in trajen mir sveta. Ženske so temelj vsake družine in od njih je odvisna bodočnost vsakega naroda. Ženske imajo mnogo skupnih problemov, pa naj bodo tega ali onega plemena in naroda in zato so Laki sestanki žen velikega pomena. Inozemke so občutile vse grozote vojne. V Nemčiji ni bilo nobenega podtalnega delovanja med ženskami, ker so vse oboževale Hitlerja in si ni nobena upala podvzeti nasprotnega koraka. Ko so priromale v dvorano, so izgledale, kakor Santa Claus. Pozdrav! Lep napredek! Srečni povratek nazaj v Cleveland in srečno novo leto njej, vsemu odbo-ruru in vsemu članstvu SŽZ želi v imenu naše podružnice. Dne 5. decembra smo imele prav lep večer. Počastile smo naše mlade ka-detke in njih matere. Theresa Cvitkovich, predsednica. Pozdravljene vse skupaj! Anna Sterle, tajnica. Obilo sreče in naše čestitke! Mary Dreshar, zapisnikarica Št. 79,Enumclaw, Wash. — Voščim vsem glavnim odbornicamin članstvu naše dične Slovenske ženske zveze prav srečno in zdravo novo leto. 1947. A.N.) Seje se vrše vsako prvo nedeljo v mesecu v Slovenski dvorani v 1-rOrain Boro °b sedmih zvečer. EVELYN KRIZAY, DIREKTORICA MLADINSKEGA ODDELKA ISo. 2— Vol. XIX The Datvn February, 1947 OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION OF AMERICA PRESIDENT’S MONTHLY MESSAGE Dear Officers and Members: In my message to you last month, one of the important things that I asked every Branch to do in the beginning of the year, was to plan your work systematically for the ensuing year and then try to follow your plan through the year. I hope that you did this and that you will follow your plan month by month so that you will come to the close of 1947 having made accomplishments during the year. You may meet obstacles and disappointments along the way, this I mentioned to you last month, but go onward trying your best and you will win in the long run. Never give up in the midstream, because the load becomes lighter step by step as we carry on. These years of sacrifice and turmoil have done much to upset and worry everyone. We were all hopeful for better conditions and regret that our own beloved America is suffering from conflicts within its borders. As we pass through the month of February each year, we always pause to celebrate the birthdays of two of the greatest Americans that ever lived. We again recall the courage and faith of George Washington and the compassion and tolerance of Abraham Lincoln, qualities needed so much today. I am sure that all good citizens are hoping for such courageous leadership as we daily watch the progress in our nation, which we love so dearly, for men who would bravely cope with the many problems of a war-torn world. May the year 1947 bring to each and everyone of us a better understanding in our every day problems and give us the strength to carry on in our every day life for the betterment of individuals and the groups in which we are interested and for which we feel the responsibility of their progress. In closing I wish to express my sincere appreciation for thsr splendid cooperation in securing new members during the Jubilee Campaign. Prosim, oprostite in v mojem imenu izrecite čestitke in pozdrave Mrs. Prisland. Vas iskreno pozdravljam, Joseph Zalar, glavni tajnik KSKJ Mr. John L. Jevitz, President ol' Lodge SS. Peter and Paul No. 06, American Fraternal Union, sent the following letter. Dear Mrs. Prisland. As the first real “first lady” and leader of the Slovene women in this new land—Ameria—let me join your many friends in the various Slovene colonies throughout this great land in paying special tribute to you on the anniversary of o.ne of the greatest works in your life—as well as that of others who 20 years ago met together and organized the Slovene women in America into what is today a great organization known as the Slovenian Women’s Union. Yes, as an organized body of mothers, daughters and sisters—which has done much in fostering and furthering the Slovene women’s equal ability and rights cause ... in our rich native culture, social, recreation and sports, civic and patriotic activities. You have lifted the barricade—earning the long deserved but deprived of public recognition of our Slovene women and men as well. Besides doing a splendid task for local causes during the span of 20 years, you have not forgotten our destitute and suffering people abroad— in the homeland, but you have fearlessly played a leading part and stepped side-by-side with other gloups in organizing and sending aid to comfort the unfortunate and griel’-stricken Slav brethren who surely have inscribed yours, your loyal associates and the entire membership of the Slovenian Women’s Union into their hearts and also in the records of the recent important Slav world history. Indeed, you and the Slovenian Women’s Union through your honorable works—have contributed much toward these local, national and historical accomplishments—Christian, humanitarian, moral and all that is clean and righteous. May the Good Lord richly reward you, and all the Slovenian Women’s Union, the great an,d true women’s fraternal order which you founded, mothered, guided and destined sa successfully through it’s first score-of years. With the blessings of health and strength, may you now enjoy many years of happiness and a much deserved rest. And looking, back how inspiring! Congratulations to Mrs. Albina Novak, your able successor, Mrs. Josephine Erjavec, the diligent working supreme secretary, and the entire Slovenian Women’s Union of America! No. 23, Ely, Minn. — The time lias flown by quickly since our meeting in room 132 of the Community Center at 6:30 p.m. on December 19. A very peppy meeting was held with election of officers in routine order. Our happy president, Mrs. Margaret Pecha, is again with us to preside at the meetings. Mrs. Margaret Shubitz was re-elected vice-president. Our dear Mrs. Hannah Robertson has fulfilled two years of service and our former reporter Mrs. Anthony Skradski was elected to succeed her for the year 1947. Miss Mary Shikonya was elected treasurer to replace Mrs. Angela Godec, who also, completed two years of service. Mary Vidmar and Stephanie Vranesich were reelected auditors. Mrs. Mary Skufca will now take in hand my dear job as a reporter which I have enjoyed very much. There were 110 other important changes. The meetings will continue to be on the third Thursday of the month at 8 p.m. A gift exchange followed the election of officers. The door prize went to Mrs. Margaret Skubitz. We hurried through with all this because the main festivity of the evening was to follow. We had a “Smorgasbord” luncheon which was enjoyed by all. I think everyone had enough to eat and we concluded the evening in the best of satisfaction and were prepared to. start the New Year in that spirit. My wishes for the new year are: that the officers will attend our meetings regularly and that our meetings in 1947 will be successful and that we increase our membership during this year. May every member of our dear organization enjoy a Happy New Year. I wish to welcome my successor, Mrs. Mary Skufca, to my post as reporter and may you find it as enjoyable as I did during my term. I will try my best to fulfill satisfactorily the duties as well in the new office of secretary for 1947. Fraternally yours, Mrs. Anthony Skra/lski No. 24, La Salle, III. — Now that the holidays are over and a new year well 011 its way, I suppose that many will divert their time to different activities about which they’ll report. We in La Salle haven’t much to write a-bout, however, 1 do wish to report that we had a beautiful Christmas. Our Pastor made a wonderful report to us in church. He told us that our church debt is all paid and he thanked everyone for the generous cooperation. Now we can start on something new, I hope. We had a few more weddings. On December 28 Miss Dorothy Klopcic was married to Mr. Frank Struma in a beautiful wedding ceremony at the 7:15 Mass. The dinner was served at. the Dom. The groom and bride are great workers for our church. Miss Frances Kotar and Mr. Albert Vaini also had a wonderful wedding at the S o’clock Mass and dinner was served at St. Roch’s hall. Goth grooms are ex-servicemen and did a remarkable job just like all the other boys who served in the armed forces. The brides are active members of our branch and their mothers are also members and earnest workers. We wish the newlyweds a happy marriage and may God bless them in their future years. Now about bowling. Some of the girls are doing very well in bowling this season, but some of us are not so good. May be our luck will change to better at the tournament. I hope so, because bowling really only depends on good luck for some of us. The girls are bowling on different teams and also other alleys. I hope the old timers will get together and do much better at the tournament. Maybe that’s what we are waiting for, but we don’t mind, because we have a lot of fun. A speedy recovery is wished to all our sick members. Greetings! To Mrs. Prisland We are a little late in congratulating you on your wonderful work for our S.W.U. We know it was hard work, Mrs. Prisland, to start an organization of this kind, but you should be very proud of your achievements during all these years. I hope that the S.W.U. will keep up the good work so we can say together: well done! Everything that Is to endure a long time is built slowly and with tender care. We will do all in our power to make our Union strong and have all kinds of sports. I know that everyone wishes us the best. Even those who have gone before us to eternal rest are with us in spirit and they, too, wish us well. Therefore, we realize that general cooperation is most important in the growth of our organization. We hope that you will be with us for many years to come and rejoice over the success of your good work which will never be forgotten. May all the blessings fall on you and God give you health and happiness. May God bless our dear S.W.U.! We wish to extend our thanks to Mrs. Savor for the lovely lunch she served after our November meeting, which was held at her home. Our December meeting was held at the Cari-oca Gardens. Believe it or not, we had a 100% attendance which made the officers very happy to see. Just keep it up! We had a very enjoyable musical program, which included Christmas carols and reading accompanied by music. We wish to thank Joanne Rachel' for the piano accompaniment. She plays very well. Many thanks to our young singers: Louise Zaggar, Norma Zaggar, Jean Hegler and Louise Savor.. Thanks also to John F. Petrich for the showing of the movies “The Night before Christmas” and a few comedies, which were enjoyed by all. Thanks also to all the members who helped in any way to make this day a successful one and thanks to all who donated towards the lunch. Our last meeting was held 011 January 8 at the V.F.W. club room 011 Niles Road. We made plans for our dance which will be held 011 February 15 at the Croation Hall on Burton St. S.E. Members, please work hard and try to sell admission tickets because we would like to have a big crowd. This is our first dance in a long time and it’ll do everyone a lot of good to get out among a jolly crowd and dance. We extend a cordial invitation to all our neighboring branches of S.W.U. and to every lover of a good time. Come one, come all. Our deepest sympathy is expressed lo our member, Angela Horwath, who mourns the loss of her mother. May she rest in peace and the perpetual light, shine upon her! Dianna Vlasic is still in the hospital. Please pay her a visit. May God grant all our sick members a speedy recovery. His mother, Mrs. Ursula Zaic, is a loyal member of No. 56, Hibbing, Min-n?sota. Our deepest sympathy to the bereaved. No. 65, Virginia, Minn. — Our first meeting of the year was held on January 3. Everyone enjoyed the “Pot-Luck Supper” which was serve,d at 7 p.m. The tables were trimmed beautifully with evergreens and other appropriate trimmings. Santa Claus favors were also added to the table decorations. The supper was followed by a gift exchange. A brief meeting was called to order by Mrs. Rose Rosman, the newly elected president. A Penny March” was also held. It was a lot of fun for all. The piano music was furnished by Mrs. Rose Johnston. We were all shocked on Thanksgiving Day at the sad news that Go,d called to eternity our beloved and ambitious worker, Mrs. Josephine Matko. She was loved by all of us for her untiring willingness to help wherever she could. God will surely grant her a place in heaven. Mrs. Rose Rosman, President No. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Our last two meetings were well attended. I was again elected for your secretary. It seems that our former secretary and I are playing a game of tag. First she took my place and now I had to take her place. I hope the members will pay their dues on time, because I’ll not be able to come collecting at your home. I’ll be at our meeting place one hour before the meeting, that is at 6 o’clock, to collect. If you cannot stay for the meeting, please come at that time to pay the dues. If you are not interested in keeping your membership in good standing, please let me know, because it’s unfair for anyone to impose the debt on the secretary. She is paying for you in the best of confidence that you will pay her back. When you owre for .dues, you owe the money to the secretary not the branch. Please keep this in mind and make it easier for me or else I’ll be very disappointed in the office of secretary. The weather has been mild in our parts and it w'on’t be long now when we will be digging up the soil and planting seeds for early lettuce. Please come to the meetings and offer some good suggestions. Anna Sterle, Secretary No. 73, Warrensville Heights, O. — Hello! For the first greeting in 1947 it sure doesn’t sound any different from all those in 1946, does it? Well, it’s for the same old friends. There were a few differences to be settled in our By-Laws, and the meeting of January 5 settled them. New requirements for our branch will be read at the meeting of February 2. Will you be there to hear them? They may affect you. To Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Travnik for their 17th wedding anniversary and to Mr. and Mrs. John Turk, Sr., for their 38th wedding anniversary we say: “Just to say CONGRATUI.ATIONS In a very happy way, And to w'ish you many, MANY Sweet returns of this dear day!” An,d to Mrs. Mary Urgo who will have a birthday this month, goes the-following verse: “Your birthday’s one of the nicest days To remember the w'liole year thru For there’s no one nicer to wish good things And to think about—THAN YOU!” Congratulations to all of you from all of us. Now to Mrs. Peter Lubanovich, Sr., who recently came home from the hospital, we would like to send this get-well message from all our members and all her friends. We would also like to include in this message Mrs. Frank Chesnik, Sr., who is ill, and Mrs. Nosse who is recuperating from pneumonia: “If wishing made folks better You know, without a doubt These wishes are so plentiful You’d soon be up and out.” Get well soon, real soon—won’t you? Congratulation to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mauer, Sr., on the arrival of a baby girl, Patricia, by name. We bet you’re all real happy. A friendly reminder from our secretary—all those who are behind in their dues, better catch up. Three months of unpaid dues means suspending yourself from the Branch. Have you checked up lately? Here’s hoping we see you all at one of our future meetings. There’ll be one every month in 1947. Evelyn Majercik No. 88, Johnstown, Pa. — Here I am with the same old story: the officers and 2 or 3 members attending meetings. Our meeting place is much nicer, but it still doesn’t attract the members to come. There is very little cooperation from the members and that’s not so. good. We have a nice junior group and could have many good times together, if you would only come to the meeting. The same officers wrere re-elected. Our December meeting wras the best we ever had. The table setting was beautiful. Thanks to all who helped me in one way or another and also for the donations. Will call on you a-gain in the near future and hope you’ll be as generous. The New Year’s dance could have been better attended. We had a fairly good crowd, but cannot make a report on the proceeds because the ticket returns were not all in at. the time of this writing. Hoping to see more of you at the meetings in the months to come. Best wishes and health to all the members of our Union! Mary Kuzma, President •- Juniors’ "Page YOUR DIRECTOR’S LETTER Dear Juniors, Cherry pies and Cupids mean February’s on the scene Washington's famed cherry tree Still yields cherries you can see. Cupid’s sleek and pies divine. Will you be my VALENTINE? Once more it is the month of February with all its famous birthdays and the very special day—St. Valentine’s. Happy St. Valentine’s Day to you, dear Juniors. Same to all of the Supreme officers and members. Now that the holidays are over and you’ve started your Spring term at school, you are looking forward to Valentine’s Day, Lincoln’s birthday and Washington’s, too. You will probably have many interesting playlets and Valentine exchange. That was always so interesting 1 thought. Picking out special verses for each type of people you knew. Fun isn’t it? So I am sending my Valentine to you, dear Juniors. TO MY VALENTINE Why do I love you ? Why do you ask ? How can I tell you ? What harder task Could you put to me? I might assay I define beauty, measure the way Wheezing time travels; Yes and I might Find who unravels day out of night; Sows in the sky with handfuls of stars; Who beget Mars; Who breathed the winds and spot out the sea. Sifted the thin sands, struck life in me. These I might tell you, who out of strife Calmed the weird spell to lift up all life. All space above you, these make small task But — why I love you ? Why do you ask ? Your Loving Valentine EVELYN KRIZAY, Barberton. O. ABE LINCOLN’S BOAT Abe Lincoln told the following to William Seward: “When about eighteen years of age, I had obtained consent of my mother to build a flatboat which I intended to load with produce to sell down the river. There were no wharves in those days, and it was the custom of steamers to stop midstream to take and discharge passengers. “I was contemplating a new flatboat, and wondering whether I could make it strong or improve it in any particular way, when two men came down to the shore in carriages with trunks. Looking at the different boats they singled out mine anti asked, ‘Who owns this?’ I answered somewhat modestly, ‘I do’. “ ‘Will you,’ said one of them, 'take us and our trunks out to the steamer?’ “ ‘Certainly,’ said I. “I was glad to have the chance of earning something. I supposed that each of them would give me two or three bits. The trunks were put on my flatboat. and the passengers seated themselves on the trunks. I scuttled them out to the steamer. "They got on board, and I lifted up their heavy trunks and put them on deck. The steamer was about to put on steam again, when I called out that they had forgotten to pay me. Each of them took from his pocket a silver half-dollar and threw it on the floor of my boat. “I could scarcely believe my eyes as I picked up the money. I coud scarcely credit that I, a poor boy. had earned a dollar in less than a day, anti that by honest work.” President Lincoln did not die a poor man. He left an estate of $110,071.62 when he died. UNFULFILLED DREAMS IVIy dreams are like balloons That are always floating on : They remain in the air And oh, they never come down ! My dreams are like the thin air That is everywhere; But I cannot grasp it. Yet I know it’s there! By Marie Bombuoh Branch 105 LOVE I love you, not only for what you are But for what I am when I am with you. I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself, but what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out: I love you for putting your hand ‘into my heaped-up heart and passing over all the foolish, weak things that you can’t help dimly seeing there, And for drawing out into the light all the beautiful belongings. That no one else had looked quite far enough to find. I love you because you are helping me to make of the lumber of my life Not a tavern but a temple; Out of the works of my every day, not a reproach, but a song. I love you because you have done more than any creed could have done, to make me good. And more than any fate could have done to make me happy. Youl have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign. Perhaps that is what being a friend means after all. NO. 20, JOLIET, ILL. — Happy New Year to everybody. We hope this new year will bring enjoyment and blessings to all. At our election of officers Jean Stefanich and I were elected to be reporters for the Junior Page. We hope to meet a lot of new friends through the Junior Page. We will also try to make this Junior Page very interesting. We don’t have very much to report now. but we must report about the big Christmas party at Trojan’s hall December 19. It was a lot of fun ; the gift exchange was one of the main features of the evening. The Christ-nuis tree was beautiful—it was decorated by our chariman. Irene Planinšek, who is the treasurer of the Junoir cadets. Mary Hul-bert, Jonita Erjavec, Vida Mikolič and Bernice Nemanich helped to decorate. Jean Stefanich and Marie Umek made the very tasty popcorn balls. Irene Planinšek was a very good chairman for this Christmas party. She managed the entire affair perfectly. Many thanks to Mrs. Caroline Gregorich for the use of the hall and to Mrs. Emma Planinšek for the cookies and other goodies. Juniors, we hope to meet soon at our next meeting and especially at our next drill practice for which you will be notified by Mildred Erjavec. We must close now and hope we will be as good reporters as our twins. Dot and Dolores Boštjančič, who were transferred to the championship cadets. THE LEGEND OF THE PETRIFIED FOREST Instead of a king whose touch turned everything to gold, as we have in our myths, tht' Indians have a legend of a goddess with a cruel touch, whose anger played havoc with a whole forest. In ancient times, one of the powerful Indian goddesses wandered away from her tribe and became1 lost. She was hungry and cold and tired when she managed to kill a rabbit with a stone. Carrying it with her she came to a place where many great logs lay on the ground, and here she decided to stop and cook her kill. The logs were wet, and no amount of labor would make a spark come from the sticks she rubbed together. Angry, sho turned the logs into some stones so they might, never burn. There are acres of these stone logs in Southern Arizona, and the area has been set aside as a national monument by our government. It is called the Petrified Forest, and one may gaze with astonishment upon fallen trees that have changed into stone and whose hearts glow with the mellow beauty of topaz, rubies, amethysts, and other semi-precious stones. SCOPE OF EXAMINATION The Society was last examined as of November 1, 1!)43, by representatives of the Illinois Department of Insurance, and the present examination covers the intervening period to. and including February 28, 1946. Assessment income was test checked and found to be correctly recorded on the books of account. Disbursements were verified by reference to the cancelled checks. Assests were inventoried and the accounts reconciled. Liabilities were established on the basis of information and .data contained in the Society’s records and files. Annual statements for the years 1943, 1944, 1945, and the statement for the two months ended February 28, 1946, were verified as to Income, Disbursements and the Ledger assets. FINANCIAL STATEMENT The following financial statement has been prepared from the books and records of the Society and reflects Income and Disbursements for the two month period ended February 28, 1946, and assets and Liabilities as of that date: To balance December 31, 1945 $178,093.65 INCOME Assessments collected ................ $8,190.10 Social members ........................... 21.00 Total assessment income..........................$ 8,211.10 Transfers, etc........................$ 15.15 Interest on bonds ....................... 248.93 Greeting cards ........................... 72.25 Song books ............................... 2.00 Employees’ tax deductions ................ 85.20 Total other Income .................................. 423.53 Total Income ...................................... 8,634.63 Total ...........................................$186,728.28 Death claims paid ...................................$ 1,025.00 Salaries of officers ...................$ 900.00 Travelling and other expenses .... 456.21 Insurance Department fees .................... 5.00 Secretary awards ........................... 527.15 Subscriptions ............................... 25.00 Official publication ..................... 1,756.25 Junior reserve ............................... 3.00 Rent ........................................ 74.00 Advertising, printing, stationery ... 84.67 Postage and express ............... 58.55 Other legal expenses.......................... 3.50 Awards ...................................... 50.00 Convention expense ............... 16.00 Writers’ fund .............................. 12.50 Administration .............................. 35.00 Total Expense Disbursements ......................... 4,006.83 Total Disbursements ...............................$ 5,031.83 Balance ...........................................$181,696.45 LEDGER ASSETS Cash in office ........................ $ 1,978.20 Deposits in banks not on interest .. 15,318.80 Deposits on interest ........... 26,589.45 Bonds .................................. 137,810.00 Total Ledger Assets ...........................-...$181,696.45 NON-LEDGER ASSETS Interest accrued on bonds...............$ 706.92 Market value over book value of bonds 5,510.50 6,217.42 Gross Assets .....................................$187,913.87 DEDUCT ASSETS NOT ADMITTED Deposits in banks short.................$ 141.25 Deposits in closed banks .................. 926.00 1,067.25 Total admitted Assets ............................$186,846.62 LIABILITIES Death claims ...........................$ 716.67 Taxes due or accrued ....................... 85.20 Accounts due or accrued ................. 1,108.27 Total Liabilities .................................$ 1,910.14 Unassigned Funds .................................$184,936.48 Total ............................................$186,846.62 Number of members in good standing 12,304. The amounts thus determined were then applied to the totals established by the previous examination. The Society has been incorrectly compiling the expense totals. The proper manner wais shown to the management and their totals corrected. COMMENTS ON FINANCIAL STATEMENT LEDGER ASSETS Cash in Office ........................................$ 1,978.20 Deposits in Banks, Not on Interest.....................$15,318.80 A reconciliation of the “cash in office” account proved this to be deposits in transit from subordinate lodges. That exact amount was deposited in the bank during the first week in March and it has therefore been allowed, although the terminology of the asset is a misnomer. Included in the deposits not on interest were accounts in the closed banks of the Kaspar American State Bank and the North American Mortgage and Loan Company totaling $926.00, all of which has been deducted as an asset not admitted. These institutions have been closed for many years and in that the recoveries have been very small, it is recommended that the accounts be charged off. Deposits in Banks on Interest..........................$26,589.45 Assets under this heading were found to consist of deposits on interest in two banking institutions and paid up shares in five savings and loan associations. The shares in the latter were Federally insured and none exceeded $5,000.00 in amount. Book Value of Bonds ................................. $137,810.00 The Society’s investment in bonds at February 28, 1946, is segregated as to classification an.d values as follows: Par Book Redemption Type Value Cost Value Value Government $154,000.00 $133,387.00 $131,810.00 $135,918.00 State 5,000.00 5,675.36 5,000.00 6,382.00 Municipal 1,000.00 1,051.61 1,000.00 1,020.00 Totals $160.,000.00 $140,113.97 $137,810.00 $143,320.00 The Government issues owned consisted of United States Savings Bonds, Series C and D; United States Defense Bonds, Series F and G; and United States Treasury Bonds, all of which are carried at cost. All other bonds are entered at par value, with premiums paid having been written off at time of purchase. Accrue/] interest in the amount of $706.92, and the excess of market and/or redemption value over book value have been reflected as non-ledger assets. As previously stated, United States of America Treasury bonds with a par value of $13,000.00 were on deposit with the Illinois Department of Insurance. The remaining bonds and deposits on interest were inspected and inventoried in the Safety Deposit Vault at the First National Bank of Joliet, Illinois. LIABILITIES Death Claims Outstanding .............................$ 716.67 The liability for death claims outstanding at February 28, 1946, was established from a review of the paid and unpaid claim files. Eight claims were determined to, be unpaid and of that number three have subsequently been paid in full. The five remaining claims consisted of four involving minor beneficiaries and one in which the beneficiary was in the armed forces overseas. Accounts Due or Accrued ..............................$1,108.27 Taxes Due or Accrued .................................$ 85.20 The unpaid operating expenses of the Society were determined from an inspection of the check register and the invoice files. This concludes the Examiner’s report as of the 5th day of Jul.y\ 194G’ when u was ad°Pte‘i and filed and made an official record of the Department of Insurance, Springfield, Illinois. In the past, the Examiners called every two years, so it may be 1948 before we have the next report. FINANČNO POROČILO S. 2. Z. ZA MESEC DECEMBER 1946 Monthly Report of the S. W.
