Camp Pristava features Kayaks and Kids
Summer vacation is winding down too quickly for most children since school is only one week away. The Slovenian ^ehool students at St. Vitus ®nd St. Mary’s however, will ave some great memories and Tories from their summer earn? at	slovenska
Pristava.
Camp began on Wednes-ay. July 20 which is one day earlier than last year. It was '''ell organized by Tim Percic, e Camp Director, who assembled an able and oicated crew of counselors ^ Margaret Gobetz, Mary J^njcic, Mark Mrva, David ■htar, Thomas Sedmak, and . ar*< Stanisha as group ea<ders and Mike Tominc, oshua Gruber, and Majdi erc>c as his administrative ^aff. . After registration and divi-S|°n into six groups, 30 CarUpers set up cots in the ®r^at hall known as the vorana” and immediately
began making flags and planning their skits.
The day was filled with activities such as balina, baseball, capture the flag, hay rides, hiking, learning about kayaking in the swimming pool, swimming, a visit to a dairy farm, a hunt for buried treasure on the Pristava which spanned three days and proved fruitful when money was found, and crafts- The evening ended with singing around the campfire with John Srsen, followed by a deep slumber created by exhaustion.
David Stanisha led the craft project of building bird houses and bird feeders which were then hung on trees on the perimeter of the picnic area to add more song and wildlife for the future.
On Friday, the camp welcomed the younger campers who came with their families. Accordingly, several tents sprouted up and 30 more wide-eyed youngsters were added to

No army marches on an empty stomach and there would not be a camp without a kitchen crew. Apol Žakelj organized and set up the kitchen for the first few days, then on Friday Margie Žnidaršič assumed the helm of the kitchen and prepared sumptuous meals to satisfy ravenous appetites.
On Saturday evening the groups presented their humorous skits usually filled with slap-stick comedy. Sunday morning concluded the camp with awards, group photographs and a photograph of all the campers on the kozolec, distribution of “Camp Pristava’’ T-shirts, and a celebration of the Eucharist.
It is always appropriate to thank the unsung heroes of any volunteer effort such as this who make it a success. Joe and Apol Žakelj for the third time spent countless hours prior to the camp meeting with the committee and the camp director, making numerous telephone calls, and then assembling the materials and food necessary; this year there was an additional chore making it a greater burden - the repair of the sleeping cots and purchase of new ones. The existing cots being 30 years old were in such disrepair that they were useless. The Frances and Jane S. Lausche Foundation through its president, James V. Debevec, was so kind as to honor a request for funds for replacement cots, sleeping mats, and tents by awarding the Slovenian Schools the generous sum of $2,000. Through the gratuitous efforts of Pam Slogar, Dave Stanisha, and the Zakeljs these dollars were stretched by replacing the canvas on the cots, buying 20 quality cots and 20 sleeping mats, and saving the balance for an off-season purchase of a tent.

Sušnik - Smith Wedding
Stephanie Smith married Michael Sušnik May 28 at St. Vitus Church. Father Victor Tomc, retired pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Collinwood, was the celebrant of the Mass.
Stephanie is the daughter of Carl and Helen Smith of Cleveland, and Michael is the son of Dennis and Delores Sušnik. A reception was held at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue.
Stephanie is a graduate of Villa Angela Academy and is
the Billing Coordinator at M.P. Patel MC Inc. in Cleveland Hts. Michael is a graduate of Kent State University and is the Marketing Director of Tax Strategy Associates CPA’s Inc., a regional accounting firm.
Michael is the grandson of Mary Sušnik of Cleveland and the late John Sušnik.
We wish Stephanie and Michael many happy years together.
Euclid Travel holds photo contest
‘‘Where in the world?” focus of Art in the Park travel photo contest is sponsored by Euclid Travel, a full-service travel resource in the' community since 1955. “Art in the Park” is scheduled for Sunday, August 21 in the beautiful, new Surveyor’s Triangle, Euclid. Recognizing two great sons of St. Vitus
We’ve all heard of someone receiving recognition for having given of their time and work to companies as in the line of teaching, medicine, etc. Upon retirement of many countless number of years, they are remembered by family and friends for their dedication throughout their many years of service.
It was on Sunday, October 31, 1993 that just such an occasion took place for two Priests, sons of St. Vitus Parish. Following an hour of celebrations and thanksgiving at 12:30 Mass, both priests Were honored at a reception in the school hall, for each having given 50 years of their lives and priesthood to the Lord.
The celebrant and homilist at the Mass was Rev. Frank Godic, with celebrants and jubilarians Rev. Victor J. Cimperman and Father Victor
N. Tome, the Rev. A. Edward Pevec, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, presiding, also present were pastor Rev. Joseph Božnar, Rev. Richard Evans, Msgr. Joseph C. Huladay, and others. Lectors were Sister Monica Cimperman, O.S.U., and Laura Trzeciak, both nieces of the celebrants. The voices of Lira choir filled the church with their beautiful hymns.
Leading up to this day, one long to be remembered, one must go back to the days many years ago at a time when baseball bats were ordinary sticks and the balls used were the work of many friends who saved and wound countless yards of string tightly together to form a ball. Little boys wore sneakers, and high-top shoes and seemingly all may at some time have been blessed with a gray or brown sweater
lovingly knit by their mothers. At that particular time people enjoyed simply standing at fences sitting on porch steps or swings, talking to one another.
It was on just such a day that one of the assistants of St. Vitus Church when walking past the church, happened to notice two little fellows sipping tea sitting on the church steps talking to one another. Could they have been discussing their future, and just what the world held in store for them? Father as he looked at them also found thoughts running through his mind, such as should these two be inside this church praying to the Lord.
Both boys it could almost be said, lived within the shadows of the church steeple. One lived on E. .61 St., while the other lived a walking distance of some ten minutes near Superior. Both had deeply religious parents; their parents attended daily Mass and saw to the needs of their children.
Their mothers, especially were involved in many church activities. One well remembered that when the new church was built, a group of women would devote their time scrubbing and washing by hand the stone-cobbled aisles of the church, and polishing the pews of the church until they glistened. Yes, they truly were handmaids in the house of the Lord.
Their sons became acquainted at an early age, atten-ding St. Vitus school, Cathedral Latin High School, and John Carroll University. In each school they participated in many functions as well as their parents.
Amazingly, both chose to dedicate their lives to the service of the Lord, and in 1939, they entered St. Mary’s Seminary for final studies to the priesthod. How many were the prayers of family and friends for their studies, and final day of ordination? Ordinations then were held in the month of June, but because of the war, the month of December was chosen at which time they made their final vows.
It was a cold and blistery day on December 18, 1943 that the two boys, with their classmates, at the foot of the altar of St. John’s Cathedral, where both were ordained by the late Archbishop Hoban. One cannot express the great joy of both families as their sons, and brothers, had at last attained their goals, vocations they chose for the rest of their lives.
Tears also streaked the faces especially of their mothers who had whispered a grateful prayer, that they were able to be given their health, to attend the happiest of occasions as they heard the final remark by the Bishop, “Thou are a priest forever.”
Father Cimperman lost his dad the year he entered John Carroll University, but I’m certain Father Tome’s dad
represented the joy that both must have experienced on mis wonderful day.
Monsignor Ponikvar helped both fathers through these years at school, acting as counselor and one whom they
often called upon throughout their growing years. How ironic that both priests had been given the name of Victor at birth.

assignments began at St. Clement’s church in Lakewood, Ohio. From there he was an assistant at St. Mary’s in Collinwood, St. Vitus, St. Lawrence, and then returned to St. Vitus Church. Father Cimperman was appointed as pastor of Christ the King church in Akron, Ohio in 1967, and remained there until his retirement in 1987. Father was a religious instructor at Borromeo Seminary from 1962 to 1965. From 1949 to 1967 he served as chaplain of the Northeast Council of the Knights of Columbus. While at Christ the King Church he was head of the Legion of Mary.
Fr. Victor Tome was assigned to St. Mary’s church in Collinwood as his first assignment. He then assisted at St. Vitus, St. Christine, Holy Family Church in Parma, Ohio before being reassigned to St. Mary’s Church in 1965. In 1967 when then pastor of St. Mary’s Father Matthew A. Jager retired, Father Tome was appointed as the new pastor, a position he held for 20 years, then becoming pastor emeritus.
Father Tome has been very active in the cause for the beatification of Bishop Frederick Baraga, and has led, even as of today, many pilgrimages to the Baraga yearly meetings in various locations. Through his efforts residents of the Slovene Home for the Aged on Neff Road are able to attend Mass in the

From baptizing a new-born to administering sacraments, uniting in marriage two lovely people, to standing at the foot of a gravesite, how many years have both Fathers given of their lives to the Lord. Between laughter and tears, teaching, listening, counseling, and just being there, on call day or night, each has given 50 years of their lives to countless parishioners and strangers.
For a combined over 100 years, Fr. Cimperman and Fr. Tome have served the Lord.
Imagine if you will, how many ledgers and paper would have to be filled in writing to tell of the works of these two wonderful priests.
To both Fr. Cimperman and Fr. Tome we say many thanks for your work well done. May the Lord bless and keep you in His care.
Your works of golden threads have been woven together never to tarnish or die. Of this I know as Fr. Cimperman is my big brother, and Father Victor Tome is a wonderful friend.
Both your families extend their congratulatons and prayers, and may God bless both of you throughout the coming years.

Mr. Joseph Merhar of Richmond Heights and formerly of 1136 Norwood Road received word from Pueblo, Colorado that his only brother, Fred Merhar, died Monday, August 15.
Survivors include wife, Lois, and brother Joseph Merhar; nieces and nephews, Mark, Joseph, Claudia and Cheryl; and six grandchildren.

Jason Byrne career moves to Calif.
After a stint of five weeks at the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, Jason Byrne, the magician son of Dr. and Mrs. Stanley B. Cummingham of Windsor, Ontario, is now performing at the Claridge Casino on the boardwalk of Atlantic City during July and August.
After his stint there, he’ll be heading for Los Angeles for the month of September at the Comedy and Magic Club.
Jason is the grandson of Vicki Svete of Euclid.

SUMMER SQUASH
& CARROT CASSEROLE
3 lbs. yellow squash
3 medium onions
2 medium carrots
1/2 t salt
2 cans cream of chicken soup
18-oz. sour cream
i-8oz. package of croutons, dressing
l stick of margarine.
Cut vegetables, cook, add salt and cook until tender. Drain and mash. Add soup and sour cream; melt margarine and combine with alternative layers in casserole with squash and carrot mixture, beginning and ending with croutons.

Chancellor Kohl has been at loggerheads on the issue with Italy, which refuses to countenance such a move until the territorial compensation row is settled.

— Kratke vesti —
•	29.061 beguncev v Sloveniji — Urad za priseljevanje in begunce je sporočilo pretekli teden, da je v Sloveniji uradno registriranih 29.061 začasnih beguncev iz Bosne in Hercegovine. Urad priznava, da je v Sloveniji tudi večje število beguncev, ki niso nikjer registrirani. Od uradno registriranih jih je kar 12.200 otrok do 18. leta starosti, od teh jih je 3.520 mlajših od sedem let. Med begunci iz BiH prevladujejo Muslimani (77 odstotkov) in Hrvatje (16 odstotkov), dva odstotka sta srbske narodnosti.
•	Manj kot dva milijona prebivalcev — V
Sloveniji je bilo 31. marca 1994 po Zavodu za statistiko 1,988.307 prebivalcev, od tega 963.869 moških in 1,024.438.žensk. Državljanov Slovenije pa je bilo omenjeni dan 1,967.147. Najbolj številna je starostna skupina prebivalcev od 35 do 39 let (160.013), najmanj prebivalcev pa je bilo v skupini od 55 do 59 let (53.629). Vključeni so pripadniki vseh narodnostnih skupin.
•	Izvoz in uvoz v prvi polovici leta — Podatki kažejo, da je Slovenija v letošnjem prvem polletju izvozila za 3 milijarde 237,8 dolarjev, uvozila pa 3 milijarde 313 milijonov dolarjev, torej je bil uvoz večji od izvoza za 75 milijonov dolarjev. Letošnji polletni izvoz je bil za 7,2 odstotka večji od lanskega, uvoz pa se je v primerjavi z lanskim povečal za 2,1 odstotka. Pokritost uvoza z izvozom je bila v lanskem prvem polletju 93-odstotna, letos pa je 98-odstotna.
•	Poskus podreditve televizije? — Novejša »afera« se je pojavila pretekli teden z novico, da namerava predsednik Državnega zbora mag. Herman Rigelnik, ki je član Liberalne demokracije Slovenije, kazensko ovaditi odgovornega urednika informativnega programa TV Slovenija Lada Ambrožiča in to zaradi izdaje državne skrivnosti. Slovenska televizija naj bi poročala o zadevah, ki so bile obravnavane na zaprti seji parlamenta. V obrambo meni Ambrožič, da gre zadeva za boljševistični pritisk na televizijo in možen izgovor za njegovo odstavitev. Delo in Slovenske novice sta poročala, da je Ivan Oman (poleg Zdravka Jelinčiča) kazensko ovadbo Rigelniku predlagal, kar pa je Oman Slovencu zatrdil, da ni res. Pred nedavnim je levici uspelo odstraniti urednika radia Žarka Petana.

Johna, članica ADZ št. 22, Oltarnega društva fare Marije Vnebovzete, Carniola Hive pri Maccabees in Kluba upokojencev na Holmes Ave. Pogreb bo iz Želetovega zavoda na E. 222 St. jutri, v petek, zj. ob 8.45, v cerkev Marije Vnebovzete ob 9.30, in od tam na pokopališče Vernih duš. Ure kropljenja so danes, 18. avgusta, pop. od 2. do 4. in zv. od 7. do 9. Družina bo hvaležna za darove v pokojničin spomin Slovenskemu domu za ostarele, 18621 Neff Rd., Cleveland, OH 44119 ali župniji Marije Vnebovzete.

Dne 15. avgusta je nenadno umrl 66 let stari Frank A. Žitko z Willoughby Hillsa, prej živeč na E. 70 St. in St. Clair Ave., 26 let lastoval Mihcic Cafe na E. 72 St. in St. Clair Ave., veteran 2. svetovne vojne, član ADZ in Katoliških vojnih veteranov pri Sv. Vidu. Pogreb bo danes, 18. avg., iz Želetovega zavoda na E. 152 St. zj. ob 8.45, v cerkev sv. Vida ob 9.30, in od tam na Vernih duš pokopališče.

Žalostna vest—
G. Joseph Merhar z Richmond Hts. (prej živeč na 1136 Norwood Rd.) je prejel žalostno vest iz Puebla, Colo., da mu je tam pretekli ponedeljek umrl edini brat Fred, za katerega žalujejo žena Lois, 6 vnukov, nečaka Mark in Joseph ter nečakinji Claudia in Cheryl kot sam brat Joseph. R.I.P.
Registracija za slov. šolo—
Slovenska šola pri sv. Vidu vabi vse slovenske otroke od predšolske dobe do vključno osmega razreda. Otroci bodo vpisani v isti razred kot so v redni šoli ob času registracije.

FRANCI PETRIČ:
Čakajoč na Janeza Pavla II.
Napoved, da bo papež Janez Pavel II. v septembru obiskal sosednjo Hrvaško, je dodobra vznemirila tudi slovensko javnost. Skorajda ni dneva, ko se komu v javnosti ali zasebnih pogovorih ne bi zastavilo vprašanje, zakaj papež ne bo obiskal Slovenije. Veliko vabil je bilo že javno izrečenih s strani škofovske konference (zadnje so ponovni izrekli slovenski škofje 14. julija letos na zasedanju v Ljubljani), da kdo dobi vtis kakor, da škofovska konferenca skorajda na vsaki seji razpravlja o tem. Tudi naši državniki na obiskih v Vatikanu so vselej ponavljali vabilo in prihajali z zagotovili, da je Slovenija na seznamu dežel, ki jih bo papež ob priliki zagotovo obiskal. Toliko vabil, pravega rezultata pa, kakor da noče biti...
Ob sporočilu, da bo papežev prvi obisk po zdravljenju, ki ga je prestal zaradi zloma v kolku, namenjen prav našim sosedam, je pri nekaterih zbudil negodovanje, skorajda užaljenost, ki so jq nekateri naši časnikarji znali še dodatno razpihniti: češ, papež se ne zmeni za nas. Drugi pa bi kar s prstom pokazali na papeža: »Papež je kriv, on noče priti k nam,« ali pa; »Cerkev na Slovenskem je kriva!« Te sodbe ne prenesejo kritične presoje.
Ze dolgo je jasno, da papež obišče neko deželo, da verne tiste dežele oz. države potrdi v veri (dušnopastirski vidik) in da utrdi vezi med tisto državo in Svetim sedežem (državniški vidik). Ponavadi prireditelji poiščejo tudi zunanji razlog za obisk: praznovanje obletnice (na Hrvaškem je to 900. obletnica ustanovitve zagrebške škofije), razglasitev za blaženega ali svetnika nekoga, ki je deloval ali bil doma v tisti deželi (npr. p. Damijana v Belgiji), ali pa kakšna druga pomembna praznovanja. Najbrž v Sloveniji za papežev o-bisk ni ovir pri iskanju dušnopastirskih razlogov. Različnih obletnic krščanske navzočnosti v našem narodu je dovolj (npr. tisočletnica Brižinskih spomenikov). Cerkev na Slovenskem bi znala ta obisk tudi dobro vključiti v svoja redna pastoralna načrtovanja, zato se ni bati, da ne bi imel širšega in globljega duhovnega odmeva. Razlogi za odlašanje in negotovost v zvezi s papeževim obiskom morajo ležati nekje drugje.
Ob pogledu v državniški vidik papeževega obiska, si moramo nujno zastaviti vprašanje: Kakšne vezi naj bi potrjeval? S priznanjem slovenske samostojnosti in sprejemanjem slovenskih državnikov je Sveti sedež že večkrat pokazal naklonjenost do slovenske države. Kakšen odnos pa naša država kaže do Svetega sedeža in Cerkve na Slovenskem, katere duhovni poglavar je Janez Pavel II? Pri vljudnostnih izjavah in obiskih naših državnikov je sicer slišati lepe besede o poslanstvu vesoljne Cerkve, drugače je, ko pogledamo na odnos, kako ravna slovenska oblast do Cerkve pri nas. Delo Mešane krovne komisije je prenehalo, ker se je zataknilo na vsej črti in se bo zdaj moralo reševati na meddržavni ravni; še vedno je nerazrešeno vprašanje položaja Cerkve in njenih uslužbencev, država po zakonu o denacionalizaciji še ni Cerkvi vrnila glavnina njenega premoženja; Slovenija je edina država v Evropi, ki še zdaj nima urejenega vprašanja religiozno-etičnega pouka v šoli... Izjave posameznih strank in politikov pa vse skupaj še bolj zaostrujejo.
Gostovanje komornega zbora »Ave«
CLEVELAND, O. — Konec septembra in prve dni oktobra bo na svoji turneji po Združenih državah in Kanadi gostoval pri nas v Clevelandu komorni zbor »Ave«, ki spada med najboljše pevske skupine v Sloveniji. Zbor se je odlikoval s svojimi nastopi ne le v Sloveniji', ampak tudi po drugih evropskih deželah in na Srednjem vzhodu. Zbor nastopa že deset let. V tem času si je nabral lepo vrsto slovenskih in mednarodnih odličij. Najbolj pa je bil počaščen s Prešernovo nagrado, ki jo je prejel za leto 1994. »Ave« je mešani pevski zbor. Ima pet pevcev za vsak glas. Zbor vodi Andraž Hauptman, poklicni glasbenik, profesor klavirja in študent dirigiranja na Glasbeni akademiji v Ljubljani.
V Clevelandu bo komorni zbor »Ave« imel svoj koncert v soboto zvečer, 1. oktobra, v Slovenskem narodnem domu na St. Clair Avenue. Ta nastop so omogočili naši »Fantje na vasi«, ki so se letos velikodušno odpovedali svojemu koncertu v korist koncerta komornega zbora »Ave«.

NA GLASBENEM POLJU...
Šoloobvezni mladinci naj se posvečajo tudi glasbi

Jesen se bliža in s tem tudi novo šolsko leto za vse šoloobvezne mladince. Med učenci so seveda vedno tudi taki, ki se poleg rednega pouka posvečajo tudi glasbi. Glasba je vsekakor zanimiva in lepa umetnost, zahteva pa svoj čas. Vsak instrument zahteva od učenca redne, vsakodnevne vaje, to če se mladi glasbenik res želi naučiti igranja na katerem koli glasbilu.
Pred leti sem čital poročilo nekega glasbenega učitelja iz Kalifornije, ki je obiskal med svojim potovanjem po Japonski nekaj srednjih šol. Na svoje veliko začudenje je ugotovil, da tamkajšnje šolske oblasti zelo propagirajo učenje glasbenih instrumentov med šolsko mladino. Ko se je bolj natančno pozanimal, zakaj to, je dobil naslednji odgovor, ki naj bi ga upoštevali tudi starši naših slovenskih šoloobveznih otrok.
Japonci so pač ugotovili, da so bili dijaki, ki so igrali glasbene instrumente, na splošno veliko bolj spretni in uspešni pri delovanju z računalniki, kot pa oni, ki se niso bavili z glasbo. Prišli so do zaključka torej, da je igranje na glasbilu izvrstna vaja za možgane.
Ko analiziramo dejavnost glasbenika pri igranju na pihalnem glasbilu npr., vidimo, da se poleg umskega hitrega delovanja možganov dodaja tudi fizično delo, ko piha v glasbilo. Ko glasbenik igra na glasbilu, najprej z očmi prebira note, katere mora skozi možganov hitro prenesti na roke in prste, da prime pravi
prijem za gotovo noto. Istočasno mora določiti moč sape, potom katere spravi ton iz instrumenta, kakor tudi dolžino in jakost tone. Vse to kombinira istočasno več dejavnosti, kar zahteva koncentracijo za dosego usklajenega umskega in fizičnega delovanja, In za uspeh pri tem je potrebna dnevna vaja, ki traja vsaj pol ure za začetnike. Le tako se da doseči napredka.
Gotovo je tudi med slovensko mladino precej glasbenih talentov, ki sodelujejo pri pihalnih, simfoničnih ali jazz ansamblih. Glasba je vsekakor lepo udejstvovanje mladine, da se zabava in svoj prosti čas porabi v koristne namene, saj se ji odpre povsem drugi vpogled v glasbo in jo znajo ceniti čisto drugače, kot neglasbeni-ki.
Glasbena šolska aktivnost je seveda povezana slej ali prej tudi z nakupom instrumenta. V mnogih primerih pa se lahko kupi instrument sorazmerno poceni. Le potrudite se in obiščite tkim. »garage sales«, ki so toliko v navadi med nami. Poglavitno je, da je instrument cel, ker malenkostna popravila, če so potrebna, niso tako draga, kot je povsem nov instrument. Glasbeni instrumenti lahko trajajo celo življenje. Potrebno je le, da se nanje pazi in z njimi ravna previdno.
Priznati moram, da je predpogoj za glasbeno udejstvovanje posluh, katerega posameznik dobi (ali ne dobi) pri rojstvu. To je božji dar, kakor je božji dar tudi kvaliteta glasu. Glas in posluh se zelo razlikujeta od človeka do človeka.
Kako naj se papež sreča s predsednikom vlade in kaj mu bo ta pokazal, ko njegova vladajoča stranka (LDS), ki ima pri nas v rokah škarje in platno, ostro nasprotuje zahtevam Cerkve po religiozno-etičnem pouku v šoli (dovolj je, da preberete njihovo zadnjo izjavo), ko iz njenih vrst prihaja nasprotovanje, da se Cerkvi vrne nacionalizirano premoženje (Mile Šetinc v Republiki imenuje Cerkev: »transnacionalni konfesionalni —finančni 'imperij', ki bi se rad trajno obesil na naš državni proračun«)? Ali pa, kaj bo povedal papežu predsednik države z »zamrznjenim članstvom« v stranki (ZLSD), ko njen ideolog in obenem podpredsednik slovenskega parlamenta, Cerkvi na Slovenskem očita: »Cerkev izstopa iz strpnosti in sprave in prestopa na stran, nestrpnosti in sovraštva«...? Kako se bo ob obisku obnašal padalski politik, ki izkoristi vsako priložnost, da širi laži,

Zato so pevski zbori, v katerih pojejo pevci z odličnimi glaso vi in posluhom veliko boljši, kot so zbori, v katerih so le povprečni pevci.
Otroka lahko zelo enostavno preizkusimo, ali ima poslu ali ne. Če je zmožen zapeti pesmico »Na planincah sonce ce sije«, je vsekakor napravil izpit za učenje glasbenega 'U strumenta. Seveda, so razne stopnje posluha, od absolutne ga na eni skrajnosti do nepo sluha na drugi. Človek na se dnji sploh ni zmožen zapel enostavne pesmice. Pri abso lutnem posluhu pa ve člove točno noto in jo lahko imenu je, katero sliši ali poje. Za Prl mer takega glasbenika bi ome nil slavnega ameriškega sakso^ fonista Stan Getza. Romanje v Frank, O.
CLEVELAND, O. - Sredi prostranega polja njiv, na katerih že zorijo prvi sadovi zemlje — se dviga kakor hvalnica sklenjenih rok prijazna cerkvica, ki je posvečena Žalostni Materi Božji. K tej znameniti božji poti prihajamo že vrsto let, saj tu človek še posebno občuti, da mu postajajo življenjske težave lažje in bolj razumljive. V molitvi se spominjamo vseh dragih, ki so nam bili v našem življenju tako blizu. Spominjamo se žrtev druge svetovne vojne, zlasti pa naših nepozabnih domobrancev. Naj bi bile naše molitve in prošnje tega romanja kot duhovni dar k prizadevanju in plemenitemu delu, da se končno tudi v Sloveniji obeležijo vsa imena naših mučencev, ki so darovali svoja mlada življenja za resnično svobodo in zdravo rast slovenskega naroda.
Letošnje romanje bo v nedeljo, 25. septembra. Sv. mašo bo ob 12. uri opravil č.g. Pavel Krajnik. Dovolj časa bo tudi za osebne molitve v cerkvi ali pa v bližnjem senčnem gozdu.
Za prevoz sta naročena dva avtobusa. Cena vožnje je tudi letos samo $10. Odhod avtobusov bo ob 8.30 zjutraj izpred cerkve Marije Vnebovze-te, ob 9h pa izpred Baragovega doma.
Vse vas še enkrat lepo vabimo, da se čimprej prijavite za to romanje. Prav tako vabimo tudi prijatelje iz daljnega Windsorja, da se nam tudi letos pridružijo, da skupno z nami poživijo to slovesnost s svojimi odličnimi pevci.

NEW YORK, NY - V teh poletnih dnevih, ki jih imenujemo tudi »pasje«, se naša aktivnost močno zmanjša. Na to pa nikdar ne pomislimo, ko grajamo »južnjake« tako v Afriki in Evropi, kakor tudi na našem ameriškem kontinentu. In vprav zaradi pasjosti poletnih dni, ki je v velikem mestu kot New Yorku še bolj občutna, kot kroničar sv. Cirila slovenskim ljudem tu ne bi hotel očitati nedeljskega ne-obiskova-nja svoje narodne cerkve na Osmi.
Nismo tako srečni kot naši ljudje v Chicagu, ko gredo lahko k maši v Lemont, namesto k sv. Štefanu v vročem mestu. Na Njujorškem smo zamudili čas, ko bi si lahko še omislili farno pristavo sv. Cirila. Dva poskusa sta bila. Vendar prave zagnanosti pri tem ni bilo. In tretja julijska nedelja, ko smo spet imeli poletno mašo na Grom-Babnikovi posesti, je bilo znova potrdilo, kako potrebna bi bila za naše narodno življenje farna pristava.
Že v otroških letih sem nekaj več občutil pri Gospodovi daritvi, če je bila darovana na prostem, v naravi. Saj narava ni nič drugega kot veličasten Stvarnikov tempelj. Ta tempelj ni minljivo delo človekovih rok, ampak delo skrivnostnega večnega Duha - Stvarnika.
Da ne bi bili šli na tretjo julijsko nedeljo njujorški srenj-čani prav v ta Stvarnikov tempelj, se bi bili zbrali v tolikem številu, čeprav manjšem od lanskega, kot smo se bili. In odhajajoč naš poletni gost, župnikov brat, je pred svojim odhodom le spoznal, kot sem dejal v zadnjem zapisu, da »nas je precej več, kot pa nas je videval ob pasjih nedeljah na Osmi«.
Podjetnik Janez Babnik je spet postavil lep, bel Gospodov šotor, v katerem je župnik p. Krizolog daroval Njegovo daritev. Ta Grom-Babnikova posest je na »njujorškem Gorenjskem« ob mirnem in vabečem jezeru. Dejal bi lahko: prav svetopisemski milje, ko
Jezus govori utrujenim apostolom, ravno vrnjenim s prve svoje misijonske poti.
Zato je p. Krizolog posebno poudaril, kako koristno je v tem vrvežnem času, umakniti se v naravo, v samoto, in iti globlje v samega sebe. Dejal nam je, da bomo v tem poglabljanju celo odkrili tisto neskladje med našimi besedami in dejanji, kar je močno škodljivo pri vzgajanju našega mlajšega rodu.
Vendar Nejče je le tudi v tem templju postavil svoje orgije, se vsedel k njim in vodil mašno petje, katerega glasovni valovi so hiteli v nebo in prek jezera ter se »zgubljali v goščavi debel«, kot bi se izrazil pesnik Zupančič. Seveda naš Miro Zupančič pa bi to naše srečanje nam v spomin lahko vtisnil na barvno platno.
Po Gospodovi daritvi smo se ob jezeru zadržali skoraj do mraka. Ne več tja v zgodnjo noč kot prejšnja leta in celo še lani. Jaz sem se umaknil v dolino in ob Gromovi hišici se spominjal umrlega Jožeta, ki je zmeraj skrbel za moj prihod k tej maši, in premišljeval o življenju slovenskega sv. Cirila na Osmi. Mislil sem na tisti rod, ki ga je ustvaril, in na tega našega, zdajšnjega, ki naj sv. Cirila na Osmi ohranja in ohrani rodu za nami...

Nekaj o Šeherazadi
LOJZE KUKOVIČA
Pred nedavnim je gostovalo v Buenos Airesu Slovensko mladinsko gledališče iz Ljubljane pod vodstvom Tomaža Pandurja s šestkratno predstavo Šeherazade Iva Svetine v gledališču Cervantes. Predstave »orientalno-zahodne opere«, kot jo avtor sam poimenuje, so se udeležili tudi nekateri člani naše slovenske skupnosti. Vtisi in sodbe o njej so bile, kot je bilo slišati, precej različne. Od tistih, ki so ji dali najvišjo oceno, do onih drugih, ki so imeli resne moralne pridržke proti njej. Zdaj, ko so igralci odšli domov in se je debata o Šeherazadi polegla, poskušajmo reči tudi mi nekaj besed o njej.
Tematično je opera precej preprosta. Vzeta je iz znane Tisoč in ene noči. Dejanje se vrši v neki mohamedanski deželi, kajti le tam najdemo sistem harema v palačah mogočnikov, obdanih od lepih žensk, plesalk, dervišev in evnuhov in številne služinčadi. Mati sultanka je porodila dva sinova, od katerih bi moral prvorojenec zasesti sultanski prestol. Toda ker so materi »zvezde« zagrozile s pokončanjem ne le sultanovega dvora, temveč tudi celega sveta, če bi zavladal prvorojenec, ga mati oslepi in postavi na prestol njegovega mlajšega brata. Ta predstavlja kraljestvo dneva in svetlobe, prvi pa kraljestvo noči in teme. V določenem trenutku gospodujoči sultan sklene, da pomori vse ženske, najprej svojega harema, potem pa tudi vse druge, med njimi tudi dve hčerki velikega vezirja, katerih ena se imenuje Šeheraza-da. Do tega zadnjega ne pride.
Opera ima neko, bi rekel, metafizično, duhovno ozadje, ki pa ne prihaja do večjega izraza na odru. Tu se večina prizorov odigra na sultanovem dvoru, v haremu. Pregibni oder omogoči, da se brez prekinitve pojavi na odru tudi prvorojeni, slepi brat, zlasti v spremstvu fantazmagoričnih dervišev v silno razgibanih plesih.
Gospodujoči sultan je absoluten gospod, njegova beseda je zakon, vse mu je na uslugo. Zlasti tudi harem lepih žensk, in večji del opere je prav izpolnjen s prizori iz haremskega
življenja. Sultan je prikazan kot shizofreničen spolni sadist, ki se neugnano, divje izživlja v erotičnih in spolnih doživetjih. Tako se na odru vrstijo prizori nizkotne počutnosti in seksualnega libertinizma. Zdi se, da je vse dobro in dovoljeno. Zenske so igrače v rokah bolestnega izživljanja senzualnega sultana. Tudi govorjenje je pogosto spolzko. Enako glasba s svojo predirljivo silovitostjo, ki biča slušni organ in po njem fantazijo. Tako se še poveča intenzivnost erotičnih prizorov. Tudi koreografija nosi na sebi močno senzualno obeležje. Da je stvar dovršena, ne manjka divje krutosti pri morjenju žensk in kastriranju zapeljivca najljubše sultanove žene.
Ne gre nam za analizo najrazličnejših elementov, iz katerih je sestavljena opera. To ni naš namen, pa tudi sposobni tega nismo. Ko eden od ljudstva lahko rečemo, da ima opera z zgolj umetniškega vidika velike odlike. Bogata in pestra scenerija, eksotični kostumi, izredna telesna izrazna moč igralcev, originalna ter globoka čutenja in strasti izražajoča glasba, ter še in še, kaže, da imamo opravka z visokokvalitetno gledališko skupino, ki ji ne manjka ne sredstev ne talenta, da gledalcem tudi brez besed posredujejo intenzivno umetnostno doživljanje. Zato s tega vidika ni čudno, da je skupina želo veliko pohval na nekaterih gledališčih sveta.
Toda umetniški vidik ni in ne sme biti za nikogar, še manj za kristjana, edini vidik, pod katerim presoja človekove stvaritve. Umetnosti ni najvišja na lestvici človeških vrednot. Nad njo so moralne in nad temi verske vrednote. In prav pod moralnim vidikom, žal, Šeherazada v tej slovenski priredbi zasluži naše težke pridržke, še več, naravnost naš odločen odklon. Velik del umetniške sile te gledališke skupine je postavljen v službo prikazovanja nizkotne počutnosti in erotičnosti. Tudi umetnost, če hoče biti resnična umetnost, mora končno služiti resnici, lepoti in dobroti.
V tej operi je dana beseda moralnemu nihilizmu golega
orientalskega erotizma in spolne sproščenosti. Človek ima vtis, da moralni vidik pri tem delu sploh ni bil upoštevan ne pri izbiri besedila in še manj pri prikazovanju pokvarjenega življenja na sultanovem dvoru. Kot da se za moralni vidik v umetnosti ni treba brigati, kot daje umetnost vzvišena nad moralo, da zanjo ne veljajo moralni zakoni, da je suvereno avtonomna.
Žal, Šeherazada, kot smo jo videli, kaže v popolnoma neže-niranih slikah erotično izživljanje na orientalnem dvoru. Skoro brez vsakega sramu zadržanosti. Nasprotno, uporabi celo vse umetniške pripomočke, da prizorom da še večjo privlačno moč. Kot da bi bilo vse dobro in prav, kar ljudje počenjajo. V operi, vsaj v teh prizorih, ki tvorijo njen precejšen del, ni nakazana nobena razlika med dobrim in slabim, med krepostjo in grehom. Nikomur se vest ne oglaša, plemenita človeška čustva so praktično odsotna. Vse je le sproščena strast, fascinacija erotičnega doživljanja.
Šeherazada ne budi v gledalcih želje po kreposti in plemeniti človečnosti. Ravno nasprotno, ker prikazuje človekovo pokvarjenost v tako privlačnih podobah, ga nujno potegne v svoj vrtinec. Noben človeški duhovni organizem ni popolnoma imun za te vrste strupa. Lepa posoda, v kateri se mu strup nudi, nevarnost kvečjemu še poveča.

Bitka ad fluvium Frigidutn (pri Ajdovščini) — pomemben mejnik v zgodovini rimskega cesarstva
^ Ajdovščini in drugod po Zgornji Vipavski dolini so se Pričeli prvi strokovni sestanki ln Predavanja o bližnji 1600-i£inici velike bitke med vojska-ma rimskega cesarja Teodozija ln Proticesarja Evgenija, ki je Potekala 5. in 6. septembra eta 394- To je bil zgodovinski sPopad za prevlado v rimskem Jtnperiju. Poudariti pa je tre-a’ c*a tedanji dogodki niso del s ovenske narodne zgodovine, |ai je bitka potekala kakih 200 et pred prihodom Slovanov v stro in Vipavsko dolino. Toda penjeni spopad je bil edini ogodek, ki se je doslej odvijal a s ovenskih tleh in je bil sve-°^rio zgodovinskega pomena.

ko domnev, ugibanj in zatrjevanj .
Prva se je v spominsko slavnost velikega dogodka, ki že odmeva v Sloveniji in tudi na tujem, vključila Cerkev. Po nekaj predavanjih v prejšnjih tednih, je za nedeljo, 28. avgusta, organizirano romanje slovenske mladine k cerkvi v Log pri Vipavi. Za udeležence bo tam predavanje z zgodovinsko tematiko. V nedeljo, 4. septembra, pa bo v omenjeni cerkvi slovesna maša ob obletnici bitke; slovesno somaševanje bo vodil koprski škof g. Metod Pirih.
Po zgodovinski legendi začetki omenjene romarske cerkve v Logu pri Vipavi segajo prav v čas bitke pred 1600 leti, zaradi česar bo v eni od stranskih kapel v spomin na spopad med vojskama rimskega cesarja Teodozija in proticesarja Evgenija poslikana freska z versko tematiko. V Vrhpolju, kjer naj bi domnevno potekala bitka, načrtujejo postavitev vi-tražnih oken v župnijski cerkvi z versko tematiko. Eden od motivov bo tudi bitka pri Fri-gidu.
Vsakoletno tradicionalno srečanje katoliških izobražen-
cev Slovenije bo letos v župnijski dvorani v Vipavi, pri čemer se bodo katoliški izobraženci udeležili tudi slovesne maše v Logu pri Vipavi. Študijski del srečanja — slednje bo potekalo 4. septembra — bo posvečen bitki pri Frigidu oziroma pri Mrzli reki. Slovenski katoliški izobraženci bodo preučili predvsem vpliv, ki ga je bitka imela na kasnejša zgodovinska dogajanja.
Ajdovski župnik g. Ivan Albreht, ki v prireditvenem odboru zastopa koprskega škofa, je predlagal, da bi v program »Obeležitev 1600 spopada v Zgornji Vipavski dolini« vključili tudi predavanje, ki bi prikazalo pomen bitke za nadaljnji razvoj verskega življenja v Evropi. Gre tudi za oddaljevanje vzhodnega od zahodnega krščanstva in za uveljavljanje krščanstva kot državne vere v Evropi.	M.D.

di tega ne zasledimo. V njej je prikazana senca brez luči, greh brez obsodbe.
Zato človek žalosten zapusti dvorano, ko se konča prireditev. Ljudje so sicer ploskali igralcem, a nekako zadržano, kot da bi hoteli reči, da so bili nekako duhovno ranjeni s tem, kar so doživeli. Žal nam je tudi za slovensko gledališko skupino. Koliko lepše bi bilo, ko bi nam postregli s kakšnim drugim lepim programom iz svojega bogatega repertoarja! Potem bi jih bili sprejeli z drugačnim veseljem in tudi z globokim ponosom kot nosilce nove slovenske kulture. S celimi družinami bi jih šli gledat, tako pa smo jih morali pred njimi svariti.
Da, tudi svarili smo jih. Dušnopastirsko Oznanilo je nekaj dni pred začetkom predstav prineslo kratko opozorilo, v katerem je zaradi moralno oporečnega značaja Šehe-razade odsvetovalo njen o-bisk, zlasti otrokom in mladini, pa tudi odrasle je opozorila na moralno nevarnost predstave. Nekateri tega opozorila niso pravilno sprejeli. Morda so pričakovali, da se bo obisk celo priporočil. Naše opozorilo je padlo po mnenju nekaterih kot grenka kaplja v veselo pričakovanje slovenskih gostov. In vendar nam ni žal, da smo to storili. Ko smo videli po video-posnetku še predstavo v gledališču, smo še bolj prepričani, da smo pravilno
ravnali. Ker smo pred Bogom tudi mi odgovorni za duhovno zdravje nam izročenih vernikov, smo jih dolžni opozoriti na moralno nevarnost, ki jo je ta opera predstavljala. Tudi če nas zato kdo ima za nekulturne! Vendar upamo, da je večina tistih, ki so to gledališko delo videli, sedaj z našim predhodnim opozorilom soglasna. Morda jim je celo žal, da ga niso bolj upoštevali.
Še nekaj! Ne smemo pozabiti, da moralni nivo stalno pada v današnjem svetu. Bog daj, da bi med nami ne začela padati moralna občutljivost. To bi bil znak, da se je tudi nas bolezen že prijela.

Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
1045. Ga. Marjana Burger, MZA New York,
je 21. julija poslala izčrpno poročilo o drugem delu njihove misijonske prireditve, ki je bila pozimi zaradi snežnega viharja onemogočena in smo takrat samo objavili v MSIP darove, ki jih je dobila preko pošte od rojakov sodelavcev, ki so odgovorili pozitivno na vabilo za prireditev in poslali denar v pismih. Danes objavljamo celotni pregled in vemo, da bodo vsi, ki bodo AD prebirali, z njim zadovoljni. V celoti uporabljamo podatke iz poročila blagajničarke in tajnice ge. Burgerjeve, ki je čeke in poročilo poslala naravnost blagajniku Štefanu Maroltu v Cleveland, ki bo gotovo vsakemu darovalcu poslal potrdilo za prejeti dar, kot naš blagajnik dela za vsak dar že toliko let z veliko zvestobo. Takole poroča ga. Burgerjeva:
»Kot Vam je gotovo povedala gdč. Ferjanova, smo zelo lepo praznovali misijonsko nedeljo. Vročina je bila neznosna, prav taka kakor je gotovo v misijonskih deželah! Pa vseeno se nas je zbralo lepo število, in posebno otroci so se zabavali s srečelovom, in se hladili s sladoledom. Lepo nam je govoril p. Krizolog in na programu so bile tudi pevske in klavirske točke.
Za uspeh prireditve smo lahko hvaležni vsem, ki si prispevali čas, delo in trud.
Dobitke so darovali
g. in ga. Karl Klesin (oljnato sliko); g. Tone Osovnik (dva slovenska Katekizma); g. in ga. Vinko Burger (Corning-ware posodo). Kosilo za prireditev so pripravile ge. Marija Zupan, Tončka Štalzer, Tina Jenko, Barbi Kamin in Marjana Burger. Pecivo so prinesle naše vedno radodarne faranke. Vse je bilo tako okusno, da smo hrano, ki je bila odveč, na koncu proslave prodali, in ni skoraj nič ostalo.
Prilagam končno finančno poročilo, ki ga pošiljam tudi g. Maroltu v Cleveland, s čeki vred. Vem, da je nekaj darovalcev skrbelo, kako to, da niso bili objavljeni po februarskem poročilu v MSIP. Takrat sem poslala v Cleveland samo čeke. Denar sem obdržala za stroške. S sedanjim poročilom, upam, da se vsi pomirijo.

Past Presidents Led To Present

The Collinwood Slovenian Home has undergone a great many changes since the days of the pioneers who established it. For each transition, for each new idea, there were men and women who cared enough to see it through. The list of past presidents, certainly, is a distinguished one.
Following the first president, John Prusnik, the booming 1920’s produced leaders in Luke Terček, August Kaplan, Joe Zulich, Martin Pogorelc, and Jim Sepic. The Depression years of the 1930’s saw John Market, Matt Kastelic, Jim Sepic again, then Michael Lah and Anton Jerman.
In 1941 Lawrence Leskovec was in office when major renovations got underway. A new wing was added, the front steps were enclosed, and the bowling alleys were removed for practical purposes. Out of the downstairs area a big club-room was made, which would serve as a meeting place for a great variety of clubs and organizations over the years.
Frank Žnidaršič, Frank Cerne and Joško Penko kept the tradition as new presidents during the war years and after. From 1953 to 1956 John
Habat’s administration kept the institution stable. He returned in 1971 and 1972, succeeding Edwin Grosel’s three years.
During Ed Grosel’s terms in office, another major renovation took place. The building was rewired, new walls were put up, and air conditioning was installed. This helped greatly in making CSH one of the more modern halls in the Federation. It was also at this time that the parking lot was expanded by tearing down the house which had stood next to the Home.
During Edward Kocin’s third year as president, he oversaw the renovation of the kitchens, a much talked about and long-awaited project; that was 1974. The next year, John E. Habat, Jr. was elected to the first of three terms, during which he coordinated the renovation of the stairway at the front of the building.
Sophia Magayna became the first woman president of the Home in 1979. During her two years, new curtains (donated by the KSKJ) were installed on the downstairs hall stage, where the dramatic club “Lilija” puts on its performances. Also, ballroom globes
were put up on the ceiling to enhance the environment for dancing.
Daniel Pavšek, who had presided in 1978, resumed the office in 1981 and served until his retirement in 1987. He oversaw the renovation of the second floor hall. The wall between the bandstand and the bar was torn down. Lodges and individuals donated lights and mirrors. Mr. Pavšek also helped in the purchase of property, which was intended eventually to be used for another parking lot expansion.
Mr. Pavšek retired as board president and also as a board member in 1987. He was followed in office by Ed Kocin, who served for two years.
The late John Jackson took office in 1989. He was instrumental in the renovation of the lower hall. In 1992, he was elected Holmes Avenue “Man of the Year.”
Our current president, Matthew Kajfez, took office this year, 1994. As vice president in 1993, Matt took over the presidency when John Jackson became ill. Matthew was the organizer in the hall getting the new, upholstered chairs.

“Hi, stranger, where do you hail from?” Frogsvile was the reply. Yes, the section now known as “5 Points” was settled by a Pennsylvania farmer about 1810. The area was very swampy. Despite the many wild animals that ventured to and from a swamp in its midst, the swamp was inundated with frogs, hence the name Frogsville.
The village prospered gradul-ly. In 1852 the arrival of the Cleveland, PainesvilJe and Ashtabula Railroad gave the town their first look at something called a locomotive.
The next 25 years Frogsville became a booming settlement.
A railroad repair shop, a roundhouse, and a post office materialized. By 1890 more than 100 buildings had been erected.
In 1868, the name of Frogsville was changed to Collinsville after a Railroad engineer by the name of Charles Collins of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. In 1875 Collins committed suicide and the name was again changed, this time to Collinwood.
Soon after the civil war, a man by the name of Spencer Dilly opened up a coal and lumber yard on the site that later became the Collinwood Shale and Brick Company.
His son Spencer Jr. operated the business for many years. It was eventually sold to a Mr. Moatz.
In 1905, a young lad of 13 years, Anton Vidmar was hired to do various light jobs. In 1910 the manufacture of brick was started. A few years later, Anton Vidmar was promoted to Superintendent of the brick operation.
The greatest influx to Collinwood of Slovenian and Croatian immigrants came from 1910 until 1930. They settled north off St. Clair, west to E. 140th, and east to Nottingham. The section was largely occupied by German and Irish families. They looked down on the newcomer«,, calling them Polocks and Hunkies. Through hard work and their friendly disposition, the immigrants soon earned the respect of the so-called Americans.
In 1916 and 1917, there was talk of building a Slovenian Home. After many months of meetings, the committee finally resolved the financial and other construction problems. The main contract was given to Mr. Rozman, a local builder.
During the construction of the Home, many neighbors helped the unloading and carried the bricks and mortar to the brick layers. It was reported that for every thousand bricks purchased, the Collinwood Shale donated an equal amount. What a grand gesture of the Collinwood Shale Company.
The original Collinwood Shale still exists on Saranac Road. However, the main office has been moved to Garfield Hts. The company went into the concrete business in 1937. The brick manufacturing was phased out in 1964.
The concrete operation was taken over by the Strohm Family in 1967. At the present time, the company is operated by Dorothy Strohm who is the widow of Ralph Strohm, who had run the company for many years.
In retrospect, two of the business avenues in the predominantly- Slovenian neighborhood were Holmes and Saranac. In the20’s, there were 34 business establishments. The depression in the 30’s played havoc with the neighborhood. Of the original businesses, only four remain on each street. The longest continuous establishment is the Wallands Saloon, which has been in the family since 1912.
The Holmes Slovenian Home was finally completed in 1919. In August, after the toil, frustration and some minor headaches, the goal was achieved. On August the 24th, the grand opening of the Holmes Avenue Hall was celebrated.
What a grnd opening it was! I was 14 years old at the time, it was a bright sunny day and the affair was full of music, singing and other merriment.
The outlook for the Holmes Slovenian Home is very bright. The halls have been renovated, the parking lot enlarged to easily accommodate large crowds. The edifice is in good shape. The management of the Holmes Slovenian Hall is in good hands and progressing very well.
I have just touched some of the highlights of the history about Collinwood and the Holmes Slovenian Home.
I feel very grateful to be chosen one of the honorees in the reclining years of my life.
I am the oldest club room member in age and attendance from 1919 to 1994 — ? and beyond.
Looking forward to celebrating the 80th anniversary of the hall.

Holmes Hall: Looking Back, While Discerning The Future

It was on a Sunday, sixty-five years ago, August 24, 1919 to be exact, that a long black chauffer-driven car pulled up before the Collinwood Slovenian Home. Out stepped a big man dressed in top hat, frock coat and striped pants. It was Harry L. Davis, Mayor of Cleveland, ready to join the festivities connected with the official opening of the Home. His Honor was on time, but the official parade was not.
Meanwhile, a huge parade was lined up at E. 156 St. and Waterloo, congregated to officially open the Home. Ready to step off, they were delayed for lack of a parade permit. No permit; no parade!'
In the excitement, a barely 20-year-old forgot that he had the permit in his pocket. The parade finally rolled, a half-hour off schedule, with two mounted police, flags, and the marching band “Bled” in the lead. The band donated their services; however, the director was slipped five dollars.
Mr. Louis Jerkič, one of the few pioneers left, despite his octogenarian years, never forgot the parade. He was the youth with the permit.
Prior to all this, building the Slovenian Home was the culmination of a dream by all of Collinwood’s Slovenian cultural and fraternal groups. Until then, meetings, rehearsals and even concerts were either held in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Holmes Avenue, or else in area “match box” halls with doors
and windows open, praying for a God-given breeze.
The drive to build an adequate hall was initiated by the singing society Soca. The first meeting beneath St. Mary’s Church was called January 16, 1919. Seven months later, a basement and two floors were completed. Ready to use!
Building the Home was a community effort. Its proximity to St. Mary’s Church stabilized a Slovenian community. Membership stocks were sold at $10 a share. Before a brick was laid, Lodge Kras No. 8 SDZ reserved the first available Sunday for a dance.
Originally, plans were made to dig a basement with only one story above it. The basement to be dug at $1.00 a cubic yard for a total of $500. Bricklayers were paid daily at 85 cents and carpenters at $1.00 an hour. For the times, those were top wages.
To lower costs and accelerate building, bricks were hauled from the nearby Col-linwod Shale & Brick, every evening after work, and placed upon the bricklayers’ platforms, ready to be put in place the next morning.
In no time at all, hauling bricks became a fun thing. Whole families, including wives and children, participated. Upon seeing this, John Gornik, founder of Gornik’s Mens Stores, donated a basket of gloves to protect the ladies’ hands. Anton Vidmar, yard boss at the brickyard, donated at least half the bricks.

up Circle 2 singing group as they traveled to Utica, New York. Mike again traveled with Circle 2 in 1987 as they toured Disney World and appeared at Epcot Center. This time Mike backed up the group playing the accordion.
Mike started his own duo with drummer and longtime friend Eddie Rodick III in 1985 after brother Don got the two a couple of small jobs. In 1986, Mike along with his brother Joe started the Mike Wojtila Band, which is now a very successful wedding and polka band performing every weekend for various functions and parties.
Mike Wojtila and The Entertainers band had their share of musicians including throughout the years, Jim Nawarski, Keith Stumpf, Rich Glavač, Tom Ivanc, Dave Hejl, Frank Okicki, John Gerl, Denny Bucar, Jan Sullivan. The current members include Mike on accordion, piano and vocals; brother Joe on sax, clarinet and vocals; Hank Guzel on bass, button box and vocals; Lisa Flatico on vocals; Al Bambič on drums; and Eddie Rodick III on guitar and vocals.
Throughout the years Mike Wojtila and The Entertainers have not only played in the Ohio area but have traveled to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, West Virginia, New York and Canada. The band was nominated by The National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame for Best/New Young Band in 1989 and 1990, and took this prestigious award in
1991.
The band has also been nominated for Band of the Year and their album “It’s Showtime” was nominated as album of the year in
1992.	The band has also been nominated by The United States Polka Association as band of the year in 1992, 1993 and 1994. In February, 1994, the band won the first round of The People’s Choice of “The Battle of the Bands” contest.
Mike has promoted polka music on radio WUJC FM 88.7 in the past as he and his brother Don had a weekly radio show in 1991. In 1992, Mike had a weekly polka show on WLND AM 830. In 1993 he was on WKTX AM 830 along with Herb Kaye three times a week promoting polka music.
Throughout the years Mike has had the opportunity to substitute and perform with bands like the late Dave Wretschko band, the Al Hreno Band, The Bob Matasy Band, The Don Wojtila Band, The Sumrada Brothers band, and the Polkat’s Social Club Parade Band.
Mike received a Voice Scholarship in 1991-1992, from the Willoughby Fine Arts Association. Hi: teacher, a Cleveland Institute of Music graduate, was Timothy Clark.
Mike has taken music theory from high school teacher Norm Novak. Mike’s main instrument, piano has led him to take private lessons from some
local area piano greats. Mike’s second piano teacher after his mom was Dr. Robert Brown, director of Music at Lakeland Community College.
From there Mike studied piano with Pete Selvaggio, who is one of the popular “Four Lads.” Mike then attended The Cleveland Institute of Music and studied piano with Michael Abbott.
Mike is still currently taking piano lessons with pianist Hank Kohout who is the regular pianist at Getty’s restaurant in downtown Cleveland. Recently, Mike has been involved in some piano recitals.

Holmes Hall Just Wouldn’t Be the Same Without Kocins

From the beginning, the Collinwood Slovenian Home has been sustained by numerous dedicated families of the community. Few have been more consistently selfless and hardworking than the Kocin family.
The Kocins have figured prominently in the Home’s operations since its founding 75 years ago. At various times they have been responsible for running everything from the downstairs bar to the meetings of the Board of Directors.
Frank Sr., the father of the family, had set the example. He literally helped build the hall, laying bricks along with many other volunteers as the building was being erected after the end of the first world war.
Of course, his involvement continued. Once the hall opened. Frank managed the bowling alley, which was located downstairs. It was a popular attraction in those days — up to .32 teams participated in the bowling league there.
Frank also worked as bartender for many years. And for no less than 37 years, he served on the Board of Directors.
Passing the Torch
The spirit was passed on to his sons. Adolph remembers lending the bar after the war from 1947-49. He was a member of the Board for 10 years, including two as vice president.
Ed has also put in countless hours of effort in various capacities over the years, including 10 years on the Board, two of them as its president.
Ed has been the key link in the Home's cooperation with St. Mary's Church. He is a past president and longtime worker for the Holy Name Society there.
Brothers Frank Jr. and Ike have passed away during the 10 years since the Home's 65th anniversary. Frank in 1987 and Ike last November. But they had made their contributions years before, living up to the family name.
Their presence w'as felt on the Board, where Ike served for eight years and Frank for six.
Other members of the family have chipped in in different ways over the years. Sister Josephine, for example, has baked and decorated many a cake for functions at the hall.
Perhaps the most obvious Kocin family trademark, aside from the ever-present good-natured kidding, is their roll-up-lhe-sleeves and get-down-to-work attitude. Many times they have been counted on when no one else was
there to do the job. Ed remembers several occasions when a bar manager would quit without notice, leaving no one to run the place. Hours later, one of the Board members would be al the Kocin's door. "Frank, you're the manager. Here's the keys!"
The fact that they have been taken for granted so often is testimom to their unfailing willingness to contribute what they can.
The Kocins have always been a close family, helping to keep each other going. The five brothers and two sisters, like their parents, have contributed their efforts in various aspects of community life in Collinwood. Today, as for so many years, parishioners of St. Mary's Church are used to seeing Ed and wife Zora singing al Mass (Ed with the Slovenian'choir Sundays at 10 o'clock. As for the Holmes Hall, Adolph and Ed still haven't quite retired. For example, they regularly supply the downstairs bar with soft drinks by going out to buy them wholesale instead of having them delivered. Why noL says Ed - it saves the hall a few bucks, and that can't hurt.
In talking to Kocin family members 10 years ago, we quoted Ed as saying, "I's no big deal. We like to be involved. If we have time, we help." As we all know, however, finding people with time to help is indeed a big deal these days.
Looking to the Future
What about the future of the Collinwood Slovenian Home in a declining neighborhood?
"If the people stick together and help the Hall out. financially and by patronizing it, it can still be around a long time." says Ed. "If thev don't, they'll have to close it up."
There are a lot of events and a lot of reasons to come to the hall, he noted — from dances and reverse raffles to funeral lunches. "I hope more of the younger people start patronizing the hall. You don't have to drink whiskey to come to the bar at the Home. They've got pop. coffee, sandwiches. You can come down and shoot a couple games of pool."
In fact, if you haven't been at the hall in a while, you can start by coming down for the annual homecoming celebration. Why not? You know you'll be happy to see some old friends . . . and you know some of those old friends will be the Kocins,

Sophie Magayna
Sophie was the daughter of Anton Baraga, a charter member of the Collinwood Slovenian Home when it was first organized in 1919. Her uncle, Krist Stokel, also a charter member, was the one who proposed building the second floor when the construction was already under way. The distinction of the Home is that it is the original building, built in 1919.
Sophie was a member of the Lilija Drama Club. In 1978 and 1979 she was president of the Home, the first and only woman to hold this office. During her tenure she added a woman’s touch, with new curtains, improvements in the kitchens, and in general seeing to the sprucing up of the premises. She also served two years as the financial secretary.
In more recent years, Sophie was the dynamic secretary of Branch 10 of the Slovenian Women’s Union, holding this position for 15 years. She was a strong supporter of the Frances Susel Cadets. This group won the First Honor Drill Team award in 1940. The drill team’s formations were unique, interesting and challenging. The team received many gold medals and other recognition.
In 1971, the Slovenian Women’s Union honored Sophie as the Woman of the Year.
She served as secretary-treasurer of the Collinwood Slovenian Pensioners Club in 1979. In the same year she was secretary of the American Federation of Slovenian Senior Citizens. The previous year, 1978, Sophie was presented a “Key to the City of Cleveland” by Mayor Dennis Kucinich, this for her many years of service to the organizations in which she was involved.
Branch No. 10 of the Slovenian Women’s Union perhaps remembered her best when it established a scholarship fund in her name.
Active to the very end, Sophie completed the second year of a four-year term in 1982 as president of the Ohio-Michigan district of the Slovenian Women’s Union.

As we prepare to gather for the 75th anniversary of the Collinwood Slovenian Home, it brings to memory many of the past accomplishments of those early Slovenian men and women who worked so hard and diligently over the years to see that the Home prospered and grew from its very humble beginnings.
But it is not enough for us to have fond memories of the

past, for it is equally important and vital for us to look toward the future so that we might perpetuate the Collinwood Slovenian Home and all that it stands for in the Collinwood community in the years to come.
Historically speaking, the Collinwood community, which was once called “Frogs-ville” in the 1800’s, sprang up around the famous Collinwood railroad yards. During the course of that growth, churches were built, basic industry developed, roads constructed, bridges erected, water and sewer lines installed, and new homes and stores were built to meet the needs of our growing population.
But over the years, as with anything, facilities become worn out if they are not maintained. It became very clear to all of us in the Collinwood area that if we did not embark on a rebuilding and revitalization program our proud neighborhood would lose its spirit and vitality and would decline like so many other neighborhoods in the City of Cleveland.
That is one reason why I point to the decade of the 90’s as the decade of decision for our community. It is with that thought that we as a proud ethnic community must join together to ensure that the progress that was made in the past by our parents and grandparents will continue not only ' today, but tomorrow as well.
Therefore, it is vitally important we, as one of the few ethnic communities left in the City of Cleveland, reinvest and rebuild our housing and building stock and our infra-
structure with capital improvement programs. It is on that note that we in the Collinwood community should be extremely proud of the millions of dollars that have been reinvested in the last ten years in the reconstruction and rebuilding o our community.
This investment goes from roads and bridges to new street lighting, Hood control projects, shade tree planting, storefront facade programs, community beautification pro jects and new governmenta complexes, such as the Pub m Safety complex built across from Collinwood Hig School, and now the new
Memorial/Nottingham brancn library being constructed o
the site of the former 1 Angela Academy. And all o this is coupled with new us ness expansion.

In the 1960’s as more Slovenians were retiring and reaching the 60 year mark — What to do with their time? How to meet old friends to talk over days gone by? Can’t talk in church and can’t stay in the saloons.
One place welcomed all comers; Collinwood Slovenian Home on Holmes Avenue since 1919.. Next stop was to organize .. with help from the Directors of the Home, organization meeting was March 22, 1962 with April 10th as first meeting with 29 ALL MALE members. The first female was welcomed at the June 12th meeting.
For the next 27 years the Pensioners have been part of the Home doing their part in helping maintain and improve the building and the grounds; participating in fund raisers; attending the various activities; encouraging the Board of Directors to persevere.

I am deeply honored at the opportunity to serve as President of the Collinwood Slovenian Home.
Five years ago, due to the urging of Frank Ferra, 1 became an interested participant in the Collinwood Slovenian Home. Since then 1 have served as a board member/alternate, board member, vice president, and, now, for the past six months as president.
I have found the position of president very gratifying but, also, at times, a little frustrating. Several issues needed solving and there were decisions to be made.
Our hall manager, John Plutt, has retired after fifteen years of service. We wish him a happy retirement. A new manager was hired, after interviewing several applicants, and his name is Bob Zgrabik. Mr. Zgrabik has been in the position for the past several months and we are very satisfied with his performance.
With your generous donations, the new chairs for the hall are now paid for.
We are planning and looking forward to our “75th Anniversary” celebration on August 26, 27 and 28. We are counting on your presence and participation to make this a joyous occasion and a huge success.

With solid management and strict bookkeping, even charging one cent for a box of matches, the Home was paid up and debt-free by 1948.
Collinwood was not the first Slovenian Home in Ohio. Bridgeport had a frame building dedicated in 1905. Collinwood, however, had the first permanent structure. The edifice laid the pattern for subsequent Slovenian Homes.
First of all, two halls were needed. One with a stage for concerts and dramatic performances. A second hall for banquets, weddings, dances or whatever. Finally, what is a Home without a convivial “club room” where future plans are forged over a glass of beer or wine.
Through the years, Collinwood Slovenian Home has seen many changes. It barely resembles the original building. In keeping with the times, it was added to, renovated and completely modernized. Indeed, the pioneers who had the vision to build the original, brick by brick, must be bursting with pride at what was accomplished with what they started.
Traditionally, Slovenians take pride in the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren. Today, their first and second generation American-born Slovenians keep adding to the legacy left by their pioneering parents.
As of right now, the Collinwood Slovenian Home is going strong as ever and looking ahead to the future.

A meeting was first held at St. Mary’s Church basement hall on January 26, 1919. A Board of Directors was elected.
A second meeting was held January 30, 1919 with John Prusnik elected as the first president.
A stockholders meeting took place Feb. 5, the next year with 56 people present. They paid $1,320 and made a decision to erect a hall at its present location.
Groundbreaking took place on March 16, 1919 and the cornerstone was laid on April 27. The entire construction lasted five months.
It was the first Slovenian Home in Ohio.

show in 1979 on the Eddie Rodick Band’s Cruise on the Carnival Cruiseline. But the biggest highlight thus far was being able to perform with his whole family at the annual Thanksgiving awards show in 1993.
Mike is currently staying very busy. He writes a column in “The St. Clair newspaper” titled “Spotlighting the Young,” which features a young person involved in the music field. He attends Lakeland Community College pursuing a major in Communications and a minor in Music Education. He is a cocktail pianist. He is a part-time church organist and vocalist at St. Paul’s and St. Robert’s churches in Euclid and St. Justin church in Eastlake. He is an organist for weddings and funerals.
He teaches piano out of his home and also teaches piano, organ, accordion, and voice at the Northshore Music store in Euclid. He is keeping up with his band. And, he even manages to roll in the dough at night at his brother Don “Wojtila’s Bakery.”
After all this, Mike enjoys working in his vegetable and flower gardens. He enjoys just about any extra activity and once in a while he even gets a little sleep.

My family and the Collinwood Hall...

In 1923 my parents Primož and Dara SuLn purchased the brick home at 15910 Medland Ave., moving from E. 63rd Street, north of St. Clair. I was only a year old, but my brother Frank was born here January 1924. My parents took an interest in the hall by being shareholders.
My memory begins with the years of late 1920 and into
1930 and ’40 when we attended the Slovenian School, joined the children’s singing groups directed by Mr. L. Seme and the St. Joseph Cadets KSKJ No. 169.
I remember climbing the stairs with my mother every Wednesday to the Slovenian library.
In 1945 I left to enter St. Alexis School of Nursing

-graduating in 1948 and married Carl Schultz, returning to live at home again. In 1954 we moved with family into our home on Pasnow in Euclid, Ohio.
But the Holmes Ave. Hall still held our interest with its Homecomings each year.
In 1980 Carl and I retired and joined Holmes Ave. Pensioners which gave Carl opportunity to take an interest in the hall and he became a director.
In the early years the hall was known as a cultural center, a school and social gathering place. ,
Many of the people who were instrumental in forming the hall are gone but others are taking their place to keep our Slovenian heritage alive.
My father died in January, 1948, mother in March, 1955 and brother Frank in February, 1988.

Holmes Hall Buttonaires
Who Was the First Couple to Have Reception at Hall?
The first couple to have their wedding reception in the new Collinwood Slovenian Home were Henry Batich and Jennie Klun, on August 21, 1920.
The hall was given free of charge because they were two of the original organizers. They were also very active in Club Lilija.
Father Skur married them at St. Mary’s church. The Mike Poklar orchestra played. A good time was had by all.
Bridesmaids were Antonia Stradjot, Mary Matoh, and Mary Belcer. The ushers were Ernest Slokar, Louis Yurkich, and Frank Suban.
