The service was very traditional with beautiful singing as my guests Alice Kuhar, Bill Hraster, and Keil Conley noticed that the ladies sat on the left side of the church and the men on the right. By the way, my grandparents, Lawrence (Lovrenc) Petkovšek and Theresa (Terezija) Hlad emigrated to Cleveland about a hundred years ago which was before the turn of the century: my dad then was born in 1903 in Cleveland. I visited their homes many times in the village of Unec. Driving to Notranjsko as well as to my maternal grandparents’ village in Dolenjsko is done in part on the freeway or autocesta with average speeds around 150 kilometers an hour, translating to 100 miles-per-hour by our standards. I drove a Toyota Corolla, four-door automatic, which I rented through Kompas-Hertz at the Brnik Airport and it performed marvelously for the one week period. I found a cousin on my mother’s side of the family, a Golob, which was my first direct contact there in the very small village of Selo, in the heart of Dolenjsko above Trebnje, having only 25 houses. Very ironically I found her, Matilda (Golob) Zupančič, as I had accompanied musician and friend Walter Ostanek as he was exploring his roots. It turns out this same woman was his aunt and my mother’s first cousin since she was my grandfather Ignac Golob’s niece. How very revealing for Walter and I to realize we were somehow related. Of the many interesting experiences I had in this very pleasant one week visit to Slovenia, the side trip to Zagreb, Croatia to meet up with August Kollander turned out to be quite nice. Croatia’s capital with over 600,000 is twice as big as Ljubljana and again very normal in terms of circumstances taking place a couple of hundred miles south in Bosnia and Croatia. This bustling metropolis seemed to be booming. The trek over the border, Slovenia to Croatia, was as simple as going from the U.S. to Canada, with the U.S. passport being the key. There were, however, quite a few trucks backed up at the border getting a scrutinizing check. “Red Klir Was Here” If there ever was a true patron of community events plus an outstanding personality, it was businessman Joe ‘“Red” Klir of Maple Heights. He passed away May 14 at age 80. He leaves an indelible mark with so many he touched either through his numerous travels on Kollander polka tours, community contacts, or through his Red Klir aluminum/vinyl business dealings. At a eulogy I gave at my friend Joe Klir’s St. Wenceslas funeral service, I stated that ‘‘Red Klir was indeed rare, remarkable, and very real. Astronaut Ronald Sega featured at Heritage fete Three years ago, the entire Slovenian Community of Cleveland was engrossed in the events surrounding the emergence of Slovenia as an independent nation. Those exciting days brought with them great joy and satisfaction followed by anxiety and fear. But after a ten day war, Slovenia had truly earned her freedom and joined the ranks of the family of nations. Since then, Slovenia has been steadily strengthening its free-market economy and has become a stable, peaceful nation with great economic potential. These events are all worthy of celebration and deserving of our commemoration. In this spirit, the Slovenian American Heritage Foundation invites one and all to a Slovenian Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, June 26. This special event will feature honored guest Dr. Ronald Sega, Space Shuttle Astronaut. The Foundation is extremely proud to have Dr. Sega, who was born in Cleveland and is of Slovenian descent, as its distinguished speaker for the evening. Anthony and Jean Sega of Wadsworth, Ohio, the astronaut’s relatives, are longtime members of the Heritage Foundation. Ronald M. Sega, Ph.D., NASA Astronaut, was a crew member on Space Shuttle mission STS-60 in February. This historic eight-day flight was the first joint United States-Russian space mission. During this flight, the crew of Discovery conducted a wide variety of biological materials science, earth observation, and life science experiments. Dr. Sega was the flight engineer for ascent and entry on this mission, performed several experiments in orbit, and operated the robotic arm, berthing the Wake Shield Facility on four separate occasions. Following 130 orbits of the earth in 3,439,705 miles and 199 hours in space, Dr. Sega landed the Discovery at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida on February 11. This exciting celebration is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26 at the Slovenian National Home, 6411 St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. The evening will include cocktails qnd traditional Slovenian dinner, a cultural program with the Glasbena Matica Chorus and a presentation by Dr. Sega. Tickets are $20.00 and can be obtained by calling Joyce Ann Hribar at (216) 261-0200 or Ann Opeka at (216) 531-7850. Letter To My Father All of my life I have frequently thought about my father, even several times a day, although I had never known him. I used to ask myself: “What is your smile like and what is the color of your eyes? Mine are blue, you know. What is the sound of your voice? I would like to experience the tenderness of your embrace. I would like to savor the joy at seeing my mother, clinging to you, altogether happy.” You have never praised or scolded me and I have never received any presents from you. And yet you gave me a lot: you presented me with life. When I watch other children going for a walk with their father, who is leading them by the hand, and knows how to find answers to all of their endless questions: yes, whenever they go out to sea with them or to the mountains or skiing... Whenever they sit in their little room pouring over their school books and run their fingers through their hair, because they do not know how to solve some mathematical or other assignment, and the father comes and with gentle patience jumps to their aid... Whenever they are sick, the father sits down on the bed (Continued on page 2) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, JUNE 16, 1994 2 Letter to father... (Continued from page 1) beside them after he comes home from work, caresses them, and tells them a fairy tale... If you have a father, you never have the feeling of being weaker than others, you feel on a par with all of them... 1 however, dear dad, you see, am on the other side, and I have to help myself and I have to defend myself. And yet I have a father somewhere. 1 remember, how one time in school the teacher asked us to answeer the question: “What does your father do?” At that time I felt how the others answered with pride that their father was a carpenter or attorney, a merchant or teacher. And you, what kind of a job do you have? I could not answer that question. Yet you certainly have some kind of a trade. On their birthday and various holidays, children receive presents and their faces are aglow with happiness. One gets a watch, another a bicycle, a third even a motor-scooter. True, some have rather poor parents. However, children still are happy even if they are poor, because they receive either a ball or a whistle from their father. That means a great deal to them just because it is from their father. Some get only a word of encouragement or perhaps just a promise. Maybe it will be fulfilled some day or maybe not, but to these children hope means a great deal. I, however, never get any presents, even though I have a father, as all who are born on this earth of ours. And the family name. What is your family name? What would be my name, if I had your family name? You gave me life, this miraculous gift, the most wonderful gift of all gifts on this earth of ours, but you did not give me the name of your forefathers. They, faithful to their customs and obligations, consistently bequeathed their houses and possessions to their natural heirs, whom they had called up to life and their blood coursed through their veins. For them this was an affair of honor. But what about you? After all, you are a father, too! As I look at myself in the mirror, I try to ascertain what your features are like, while examining my own. I try to picture or guess what you look like. Whenever I meet men of approximately the age you must be, 1 keep telling myself: “Perhaps I shall find him some day after all...” Then my heart begins to beat more ffc/cug LV TRAVEL. “ • • ’’."■■V' 22078 Lakeshore Blvd. • Euclid, OH 44123 Columbus Day Get-Away! What can one say, some voice inside of me keeps calling for you. In the crowd I seek the faces which could possibly resemble yours. Perhaps it seems to you a little malicious, nevertheless I cannot resist it. You must have some kind of face. Then there is emptiness. Complete. From the very beginning. The emotional bond, which is missing, the meeting with you, which I have not experienced, creates an atmosphere of some kind of indifference in my heart. You never loved! Love, dad, is an honor to a personality. It binds two persons in a duet for a concert of life and creates unity in the service of life. Love means sacrificing in happiness and in sorrow. It means donating life and in exchange accepting happiness which life brings, but it also means accepting responsibility. Love means doing away with confusion which is within ourselves or which we feel in the people around us. We live, in other words, together with others and the relations with our neighbors are not always fulfilling. Look, dad, that is love! I shall not judge your conduct, really not. Nor do I have anything to forgive you, because I do not know who you are, even though I know that you exist somewhere. Lack of love is neither a crime nor a fault. For that reason I have nothing to judge nor anything to forgive. It is true: thousands and thousands of times I would have needed you. But everything is past now. Be that as it may, dad, this I tell you: Thanks for the life in which you participated. It is wonderful. To sta Socialdemokratska stranka Slovenije (Janez Janša) in Slovenska ljudska stranka (Marjan Podobnik). On ponedeljka, 13. junija, so v Ljubljani. Zato so želeli najti nove vezi z domovino svojih staršev in starih staršev. Denar za to pot so z različnimi delovnimi akcijami in prireditvami zbirali vse leto. Bili so zelo požrtvovalni. Najhujša afera zadeva trgovanje z orožjem, v njej so baje vpleteni politiki, poslovneži in ljudi iz izraelske obrambne industrije. Poudarjamo: pišemo o Estonski, ne Sloveniji. Ekonomske reforme v Estonski kažejo določen uspeh, vendar še obstajajo velika državna podjetja. Novi zakoni o privatizaciji, o stečajnem postopku, o gospodarskem prestrukturiranju, bodo v prihajajočem letu znatno povečali brezposelnost, letna inflacijska stopnja je 35-odstotna. Praznovanje Dneva neodvisnosti Republike Slovenije CLEVELAND, O. — Dne 25. junija praznuje republika Slovenija tretjo obletnico neodvisnosti. Po tisočletnem tujem gospostvu so Slovenci končno uresničili željo po osamosvojitvi. Pogumno združeni v odločitvi doseči svobodo, so se uspešno uprli Jugoslovanski armadi in res dosegli svobodno in demokratično državo. Prve dni maja sem zadel nanj v Ljubljani. Marsikaj smo skupaj doživljali in delimo še danes. »Koliko časa še?« so nas izpraševali. Jaz v Rimu, Viktor in Jože v Madridu, Marija v Zaragozi in Madridu... Brez štipendij in državnih podpor. V novem svetu, v novih okoliščinah, z novim jezikom.
